INTRODUCTION
 Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely used in
the preparation of partial and total denture bases.
 In dental applications, different forms of Ag such as Ag
ions (Ag+), Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), and Ag-
polymeric complexes have been used to improve
antibacterial efficiency.
 The major advantage of using AgNPs arises from their
large ratio of surface area to volume. AgNPs exhibit
more effective ion release and enhanced antimicrobial
activity.
 Although the antimicrobial characteristic of AgNPs in
acrylic resins has been previously illustrated, there are
few studies reporting the influence of NPs on the
mechanical properties of denture base
AIM OF THE STUDY
 This in vitro study was to evaluate the affect of AgNPs
on the flexural strenght, elastic modulus, impact
strenght, and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
properties of two distinct dental acrylic resins.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
 Two acrylic resins used in this study were;
o Conventional heat-polymerized PMMA resin
(Meliodent, Bayer Dental, Berkshire, UK);
o Microwave-polymerized PMMA resin (Acron MC, GC
Dental, Tokyo, Japan).
Synthesis and characterization of AgNPs
Ultraviolet (UV) visible absorption spectroscopy
Transmission electron microscopy
Zeta Sizer Instrument
Specimen preparation
 In total, 56 specimens (n=7) were prepared for flexural
and inpact strength tests, with dimensions of 65×10×2.5
mm and 50×6×4 mm, according to the ADA
Specification No.12
 The powder/ liquid ratios for heat-polymerized and
microwave polymerized resin were 35 g/14 mL and 100
g/43 mL, respectively.
 For the study groups to determine the effect of AgNPs,
the suspension of AgNPs was mixed with each resin
monomer in concentrations of 0.3, 0.8, and 1.6 wt% and
sonicated for 15 min. Afterwards, the liquid component
was mixed with the powder part.
 Before testing for full saturation, the flexural test
specimens were kept in distilled water at 37°C for 50±2
h, and impact test specimens were stored at 37°C for 2
weeks

Statistical analysis
 In each group, the mean and standard deviation values
were calculated. For statistical analysis, two-way
ANOVA and Tukey-HSD tests were performed.
Statistical significance was set at p<0.05.

DISCUSSION
 In this study, the AgNPs were synthesized by the
Turkevich method, through the reduction of silver nitrate
with sodium citrate.
 The nanoparticles are insoluble and their size is typically
less than 100 nm. In the present study, the mean particle
size determined via Zeta Sizer was about 68 nm.
 In the present study, the interaction between acrylic resin
types and the addition of AgNPs at different ratios was
not significant for strength, elastic modulus and impact
strenght tests(p>0.05)
 Results of this study indicate that the addition of 0.8 and
1.6 wt% AgNPs alters the flexural strenght and elastic
modulus of microwave cured PMMA.
 In the present study, the incorporation of AgNPs resulted
in a change in thermal properties of the resin.
 Although the glass transition temperature decreased, the
relative decline was not significant enopught to sacrifice
thermal stability of denture base resin
LIMITATIONS
 This in vitro study had some limitations. Different
nanoparticle concentrations, their respective
microbiological aspects and their effects on colour
changes should be taken into consideration
CONCLUSION
 Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the
following conclusions were drawn:
 Incorporation of 0.8 and 1.6 wt% AgNPs decreasesd
flexural strength and elastic modulus of microwave-
polymerized acrylic resin but had no effect on the other
test groups;
 For the two resin groups and test specimens, the addition
of AgNPs had no effects in terms of impact strength;
 The glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased with the
addition of AgNPs for both of the denture base resins.

INTRODUCTION  Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely used in the preparation of partial and total denture bases.  In dental applications, different forms of Ag such as Ag ions (Ag+), Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), and Ag- polymeric complexes have been used to improve antibacterial efficiency.
  • 4.  The major advantage of using AgNPs arises from their large ratio of surface area to volume. AgNPs exhibit more effective ion release and enhanced antimicrobial activity.  Although the antimicrobial characteristic of AgNPs in acrylic resins has been previously illustrated, there are few studies reporting the influence of NPs on the mechanical properties of denture base
  • 5. AIM OF THE STUDY  This in vitro study was to evaluate the affect of AgNPs on the flexural strenght, elastic modulus, impact strenght, and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) properties of two distinct dental acrylic resins.
  • 6. MATERIALS AND METHODS  Two acrylic resins used in this study were; o Conventional heat-polymerized PMMA resin (Meliodent, Bayer Dental, Berkshire, UK); o Microwave-polymerized PMMA resin (Acron MC, GC Dental, Tokyo, Japan).
  • 8. Ultraviolet (UV) visible absorption spectroscopy
  • 11. Specimen preparation  In total, 56 specimens (n=7) were prepared for flexural and inpact strength tests, with dimensions of 65×10×2.5 mm and 50×6×4 mm, according to the ADA Specification No.12
  • 12.  The powder/ liquid ratios for heat-polymerized and microwave polymerized resin were 35 g/14 mL and 100 g/43 mL, respectively.
  • 13.  For the study groups to determine the effect of AgNPs, the suspension of AgNPs was mixed with each resin monomer in concentrations of 0.3, 0.8, and 1.6 wt% and sonicated for 15 min. Afterwards, the liquid component was mixed with the powder part.  Before testing for full saturation, the flexural test specimens were kept in distilled water at 37°C for 50±2 h, and impact test specimens were stored at 37°C for 2 weeks

DISCUSSION  In this study, the AgNPs were synthesized by the Turkevich method, through the reduction of silver nitrate with sodium citrate.  The nanoparticles are insoluble and their size is typically less than 100 nm. In the present study, the mean particle size determined via Zeta Sizer was about 68 nm.
  • 25.  In the present study, the interaction between acrylic resin types and the addition of AgNPs at different ratios was not significant for strength, elastic modulus and impact strenght tests(p>0.05)  Results of this study indicate that the addition of 0.8 and 1.6 wt% AgNPs alters the flexural strenght and elastic modulus of microwave cured PMMA.
  • 26.  In the present study, the incorporation of AgNPs resulted in a change in thermal properties of the resin.  Although the glass transition temperature decreased, the relative decline was not significant enopught to sacrifice thermal stability of denture base resin
  • 27. LIMITATIONS  This in vitro study had some limitations. Different nanoparticle concentrations, their respective microbiological aspects and their effects on colour changes should be taken into consideration
  • 28. CONCLUSION  Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the following conclusions were drawn:  Incorporation of 0.8 and 1.6 wt% AgNPs decreasesd flexural strength and elastic modulus of microwave- polymerized acrylic resin but had no effect on the other test groups;  For the two resin groups and test specimens, the addition of AgNPs had no effects in terms of impact strength;  The glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased with the addition of AgNPs for both of the denture base resins.
