written word more accessible. As a result, the use of paper spread throughout
the empire
- Businesses eventually ran on a form of credit similar to today’s
modern day checks

3. The House of Wisdom
The House of Wisdom was founded in the 8th century by Al Ma'Mun in
Baghdad. Al Ma’Mun founded the House of Wisdom to translate works of
literature and knowledge into Arabic. In a way, the founding of the House
of Wisdom was actually a social improvement to the Islamic society
because it brought together scholars from different continents and
beyond to work in the same Arabic language.

4. The Spread of the Arabic Law
As Abbasid Armies conquered more lands, the Islamic Empire spread, bringing
more people under its control. This process was a major political improvement.
With more people under Arabic rule, which was universal throughout the
Islamic Empire, there were less political conflicts within the Empire.

Mathematics
Did you know that Arabic numbers and the idea of the number zero made Algebra possible? Al-
Khwarizmi, a Persian mathematician during the Abbasid caliphate, wrote a textbook that was the
standard for Algebra for centuries. This was an important achievement because basic algebra is
commonly used in everyday life.
Medicine
The most well known doctor of the Golden Age was Al-Razi (864-930 CE). He wrote about 200
medical books, including those written about diseases such as smallpox and chickenpox. Al-Razi was
also a talented surgeon, and an experimenter of potential cures for ailments. Through many great
doctors such as Al-Razi, hundreds of hospitals came to be established throughout the Islamic Empire.
