Concert Report For A Wind Concert
Eric Fang, Wind Symphony Concert Report On Friday, October twenty–second, Simi Valley High
School had their fall concert, however, they only had two bands so there was not much to write
about. The concert band opened up with, Apparitions, by Brian Balmages, which was a song with a
very mysterious intro with the percussion. The song is later developed into a soprano winds melody
which was very well balanced with its counter and support. Unfortunately before a very beautiful,
yet eerie flute solo they were somewhat out of tune, and during it, the flutes were talking to each
other. Later, the soprano melody turns into a brass dominated scene, with the trumpets being slightly
too loud and overtaking the rest of the band. Overall, the piece was very well executed with great
attacks, releases, and flow. However there was little to no vibrato in the song. After that song, The
Magician's Secret, by Joseph Eidson was stated by a flute squeak, but evens out into a nice jumpy
beginning. Throughout the many brass and high winds chords, they were mostly out of tune, but the
pulsing and tempo was very well done and controlled which gave the theme of smoothness and
elegance. While the band was going great with strong and obvious dynamics, one of the trumpets
messed up and showed it. Luckily, a great story of adventure and curiosity manage to cover him up
and retain the moving melody. As the song ended, I personally felt the end was a bit too staccato and
the overall song had no

The At 2 : Beginning Of What Will Be A Very Polyphonic...
The oboe at 2:26 is the beginning of what will be a very polyphonic section (2:26–3:03). The oboe
sound here is the perfect intro/opening to this section because it is welcoming and almost reminds
me of springtime. It starts off by moving up the scale slowly and then returning to the tonic. It then
moves quickly up the scale and returns to the tonic. It is very legato and happy sounding. The flute
at 2:26 is very whimsical and involves a lot of switching between 2 notes with small intervals. It
complements the opening oboe well and contributes to the happy spring like opening to the section.
When the clarinet chimes in at 2:31 it immediately pierces the ear and takes over the section. The
melody goes up once in pitch, and then quickly falls and rises again. The high note is then held for
an extended period of time until the clarinet trickles out of the note by descending the scale. This
melody is repeated for the whole section by the clarinet. There are some slight variations, but for the
most part the melody stays the same and is repeated for the whole section. There are times where it
is tough to hear the clarinet due to the other instruments but it is there. The low instruments that
come in at 2:39 bring a whole new mood to the section. Their different timbre brings a sense of
danger approaching. The constant strike of the cello gives the piece a profound beat and almost
sounds like the big mean footsteps of danger approaching. The introduction of the

"It's all fun and games until someone breaks a reed." – Anonymous (Nee). Clarinets and saxophones
are two different instruments that are in the woodwind family. The clarinet was the first instrument I
learned, and I played it in concert band for middle school and in marching band during my first two
years of high school. I learned the tenor saxophone at the end of my freshman year, and I play it for
jazz band and show choir pit. They are both equally fun instruments to play, and they are not too
difficult to play. The clarinet and saxophone are different in ways such as history, shape, keys, sound
and variety but are also similar in these ways. Firstly, the history of the clarinet and saxophone are
different. The clarinet is a modern version of a directly developed from the instrument, Chalumeau
("The Clarinet"). The creator of the clarinet, Johann Christoph Denner and his son, also named
Johann, decided to make some changes to the chalumeau. They added keys, a bigger bell and a
separate mouthpiece. The keys made the largest impact because ... Show more content on

Each one has certain ones that are most commonly known and some that people have never heard
of. The clarinets family members that are in a regular concert band are usually a B flat clarinet,
which is the most common, and the bass clarinet. The saxophone has more of its family members in
a regular concert band. There is the most common, which is an alto saxophone. There also is the
soprano, tenor and baritone. There are plenty more of each instrument, but those are the most
common instruments of a clarinet and saxophone in concert band. In conclusion, the clarinet and

The Chalumeau and the Clarinet Essay
This paper will explore the early instrument known as the chalumeau and the various types of
instruments that have evolved from it. The chalumeau group of instruments were folk instruments
that were played with a single reed and the chalumeau itself is most commonly known as the
predecessor to the modern–day clarinet. The instrument has only eight tone–holes on its cylindrical
bore. There are many other single reed instruments that resemble the chalumeau and were in
existence during the same time period. I will be discussing the history of the chalumeau and its
repertoire, similar instruments of the time, and the evolution from the chalumeau to the modern day
clarinet. My sources will include scholarly articles from online databases, such ... Show more

The most common of these was the soprano chalumeau, but alto, tenor, and bass versions of the
instrument existed as well (Lawson). There is also evidence that there was no set key for these
instruments to be pitched in. There are a few examples of surviving chalumeau to back up these
claims. The first one, created by a many by the name of Liebav, is pitched in C and is 33 centimeters
in length. A few more exist made by Denner and Klenig are all pitched in F and are around 50
centimeters long (Lawson). While we have surviving examples of soprano, alto, and tenor
chalumeau, there are no remaining bass chalumeau for us to examine. The closest we are able to
come to the bass chalumeau are three remaining instruments close to the bass clarinet in size, but
they more resemble the bassoon due to their angled finger holes (Lawson).
The word chalumeau itself comes to us from both Greek and Latin roots. The Greek word
calamaulos means "a pipe of reed" and the Latin word calamellus translates to "little reed" (Hunt).
Both words refer to the chalumeau's use of a single–reed. Because of its resemblance to many other
baroque instruments, the term "chalumeau" is also used to describe many different wind instruments
in the shape of a pipe, most often resembling the recorder, that are played through the use of a single
or double reed (Albert 10). For instance, the mock trumpet from seventeenth century England is
classified as a chalumeau

Techniques Used by Clarinet Players
Technique is very important for all musicians of all types, especially for Clarinet players. Many of
the techniques are vital for a great musician to understand. Things such as embouchure, vibrato and
tone effects are all things that are required by the musician. I will be investigating the embouchure
and how a correct one will substantially increase your prowess as a woodwind, particularly clarinet,
player. The clarinet is a woodwind instrument that has a single reed mouthpiece. Johann Christoph
Denner invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register
key to the earlier Chalumea. Having a correct embouchure is vitally important to playing woodwind
instruments.
Structure
1. Embouchure.
2. Different types of embouchures in different people.
3. Research into different kinds of embouchure and how other people do it.
4. Synthesis of why it is very important to have an good embouchure.
With the woodwinds, the sound is generated by a reed and not with the lips. The embouchure is
therefore based on sealing the area around the reed and the mouthpiece. This makes sure that there is
no air escaping from either side of the mouthpiece when the musician is blowing. A reed instrument
works by having the musician blowing a steady breath of air over the reed and through the
mouthpiece. The vibrations of the reed are what produce the sound that makes up the notes. The
harder or stronger the air is passing over the reed the higher the pitch of the

Creativity In Clarinet
Creativity. What does that word make you think of? A person, place, object, a feeling? Do you think
of a sunset or fashion designers or artists? Creativity is such a broad concept that it's different for
everyone. If you put one hundred people in a room and told them to write down the first thing they
thought of when they heard the word creativity I bet no two people would have the exact same
answer. For me creativity is brought to me in my clarinet, and the way it was created as well as the
music it produces. When you first see a clarinet you probably think nothing about it, but when you
really think about it you can see the beauty in it. When you examine it closer you can really see how
impressive it is how all the parts and pieces fit together. You can see how the dark, beautiful wood of
the clarinet pairs with the shiny silver of the keys. Craftsmanship is shown in the way the reeds are
made. It takes precision and skill to get the reed as thin as it is and still be able to help produce the
wonderful sound of the clarinet. The best way to witness the creativity of a clarinet is to listen to the
melodic noises it makes. It's not noticeable in an orchestra of instruments, ... Show more content on

take you to a whole other world. It transports you to another time and place. I love playing different
kinds of music on my clarinet because every piece of music evokes different emotions. Songs can
make you happy, sad, angry, hopeful, or depressed. It's a great feeling when you're playing, and you
can feel goosebumps on your arm from the emotion the music evokes. The clarinet is my example
because everything about it screams creativity from the woodwork involved to the sounds it

Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis
Watching Louis Armstrong's live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure,
especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and
his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods' entrance on
vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert.
As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each
song throughout the concert.
Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, "Sleepy Time Down South," before
formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the
tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the
opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion.
Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and
was named "Indiana." In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the
performer's immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from
beginning to end.
After "Indiana" was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante
"Black and Blue." Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a
piano level until Armstrong's trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The
song's

Britten Sections
Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is broken up into many sections. This allows
someone with no prior experience listening to orchestras to understand the different instrumental
sections. The piece begins with broad sections, continues with individual instruments, and ends
demonstrating musical vocabulary. Each variation showcases different instruments ranging from the
woodwinds to the percussion. The woodwind section consists of flutes, piccolos, oboes, clarinets,
and bassoons. Woodwinds were traditionally made of wood, hence their name. These instruments
can only produce one note at a time. Some woodwinds use a reed. The clarinet, saxophone, and bass
clarinet are single–reed woodwinds. The oboe, English horn, bassoon, ... Show more content on

These instruments are struck by hand, mallets, sticks, or hammers. Some produce definite pitch and
some produce indefinite pitch. The timpani, glockenspiel, xylophone, celesta, and chimes produce
definite pitches. The snare drum, bass drum, tambourine, triangle, cymbals, and gong produce
indefinite pitches. It is common for a percussionist to play several different instruments in a
symphony orchestra or concert band. Variation number three features clarinets. Clarinets are single–
reed instruments. Sound is produced by the vibrations of air in the tube. This instrument can produce
a wide diversity of tone color and dynamics. Other instrument families played in this variation
include the percussion. The double bass, sometimes called the bass, is played in variation number
eight. The sound is produced when a bow is drawn across the strings. The strings can also be
plucked by the musician's fingers. A double bass is the largest of the string family and has the lowest
range. Other instrument families in this variation include percussion and woodwind instruments.
Variation number eleven showcases the trumpets. Sound is created when the musician blows in the
cup–shaped mouth piece. The vibrations produced are amplified throughout the tube. The trumpet
gives a brilliant, loud, and penetrating noise. It is often used in jazz and rock groups. Other
instrument families played in this variation are

Aaron Copland Music Analysis
Aaron Copland is a twentieth century American composer, teacher, and conductor. Schuman (1980),
refers to Copland as the "Dean of American Composers", which he attributes to his stylistic
contributions to American culture including film. His works includes songs, chamber music, ballets,
theater, symphony orchestra, solos, and chorus. Copland's approach to composing included twelve–
tone, a basic exhibition of serialism. Crawford & Hamberlin (2013), describe this style as organizing
twelve pitches of the chromatic scale into a unique pattern. This method expressed a way of
organizing notes freely, without focusing on a key center. To non–musical ears, the atonality heard is
interpreted as strange, exotic, or in some cases esthetically pleasing. Copland's musical influence
includes his time in Paris during the 1920's with Stravinsky, a Russian Nationalist. Stravinsky's style
was inclusive of traditional Russian folk music, evident in his ballet Petrushka (Navarro 2011).
Copland composed Outdoor Overture in 1938, as a request from Alexander Richter, Director of
Music at the High School of Music and Arts in New York City. Pease (2015), attributes the
inspiration behind this composition from Richter's campaign: American Music for American Youth.
The score (APPENDIX A), shares program notes, along with an extended synopsis of the piece. The
basis for Outdoor Overture, is a theme expressed initially by the upper woodwinds and strings
(APPENDIX B). The idea is introduced

Botti Performance Review
On February 10, 2017, I attended Chris Botti's nearly sold out show at the Hilbert Circle Theater.
This was the most brilliant performance I have ever seen. While I was not familiar with Botti before
the show, I had been asked on a date by a guy from church who was a fan of his work. After having
dinner at Oceanaire, we arrived at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, where women were dressed from
casual attire with black pants to full length ball gowns with mink fur coats, while the men wore suits
or sports coats with dress pants. Our seats were located in the middle of the theatre on the edge of
the balcony in front of the stage. Botti created an intimate atmosphere as he related the show to a
Valentine's Day theme. The velvety sound of Botti's trumpet flowed into the air when ... Show more

Each member of Botti's band performed a cadenza near the end of the show. The other musicians in
Botti's band included Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Richie Goods on bass, Lee Pearson on drums and
Ben Butler on the electric guitar. Keezer played at the mezzopiano dynamic level. Botti played at the
piannissmo dynamic level in "The Look of Love" but in some of his other songs he would begin in a
soft piano and crescendo to a mezzo forte with some subito changes from mezzo piano to forte.
While there was contrast due to the nature of jazz, most of the harmonies were consonant and the
melodies were conjunct and pleasant to hear. There was never a moment in the performance where I
felt the need for tension to be resolved, it was generally smooth. Overall, the wind instruments
played included a bass clarinet, clarinets, an English horn, flutes, a piccolo, oboes, and bassoons.
Among the strings heard were violins, violas, cellos, a harp, and double basses. Besides the trumpet,
the concert included other brass instruments such as French horns, trombones, and a

The Clarinet Research Paper
The clarinet is a single–reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube. The clarinet is a very
interesting instrument that plays good music. It is typically used in band ensembles. It is made out of
either plastic or wood. The reed is a part of the clarinet that it can't be played without. The clarinet
was originated a long time ago and it has an interesting manufacturing process.
The clarinet originated around 2700 B.C. in Egypt. The Egyptians created this instrument called the
zummara (sometimes called the memet). The zummara was a single reed instrument, much like the
modern day clarinet. Different than the clarinet, the zummara had two tubes instead of one. The first
true single reed instrument was called the chalumeau. The chalumeau ... Show more content on

First they they cut logs to 3–4 feet long then they have to season the wood. To season the wood they
either have to keep it in open air for several months or they dry it in a kiln. Then the logs are split
and sawed to the correct lengths of the clarinet body pieces. The body pieces look like long
rectangular blocks and pyramidal shapes for the barrel. These pieces are called billets. "When the
manufacturer receives the billets, workers inspect the lot. Then skilled workers place the billets on a
borer, which drills a hole lengthwise through the center of each piece."(Clarinet). After they drill it,
the wood then is shaped like a cylinder. Then they make the wood smooth and they season the wood
again. When the wood is seasoned again they then cut it into the size of the actual clarinet. Then
they paint it with black dye. On the plastic models, they make the body parts for the clarinet through
injection molding. Then they melt plastic pellets and put them in the molds. Then they may have to
fix it up a little unless it came out of the mold perfectly. The next step is boring the holes. They use
different drill bits for this because not all the holes are the same size. Then they begin to construct
the keys. They usually use casts for this step. When the keys are finished they have put the pads on
them. Then they mount the keys on small posts and put them on the clarinet. They then put the final
touches on the clarinet

History Of The Clarinet Essay
The clarinet is a woodwind instrament consisting of a cylindrical wood, metal, or ebonite pipe with
a bell–shaped opening at one end and a mouthpiece at the other end, to which a thin reed is attached.
The clarinet has five different sections, the mouthpiece, the barrel, the upper section, the lower
section, and the bell. The length of the entire instrument is 60 cm long. The mouthpiece section
consists of a slotted cylinder, to which a reed is attached by a metal clamp called a ligature. The
mouthpiece plugs into the next section which is a barrel. The barrel is simply a connecting cylinder
to which the mouthpiece and the upper section plugs into. The upper section is a cylindrical pipe

By the mid eighteenth century, the five key clarinet became standard. In 1844, the clarinet was
further revised into what we know of it today.
Around the beginning of the eighteenth century, a German instrument maker, Johann Christoff
Denner invented the clarinet by improving the chalumeau. He did this by doubling the length of the
chalumeau and adding two keys. The clarinet slowly acquired more keys during the eighteenth
century. By 1750 the five key clarinet was the standard. In 1844, two french musicians, Louis–
Augustine Buffet and Hyacinthe Klosé made the most significant improvement in the instruments
history. They applied the Boehm flute key system to the clarinet. This was done by placing each
hole in different places so that each note would have the same tone quality. Then, they devised a key
system that would cover all the holes. The improvements were a success, and the newly revised
instrument became popular all over the world.
The clarinet produces sound when air passes over the reed. The reed then vibrates, causing the
flowing air to vibrate, thus producing sound. The air then exits the nearest opening. The farther the
air travels before exiting, the deeper and lower the note will be. To produce a wide variety of notes,
the clarinet has many keys and holes. Pressing different combinations of keys will result in different
notes.

tempo, lead by the flutes and clarinets, made the song very enjoyable to hear and also had a very
happy feel to it, which, in my mind, made it a very appropriate closer. The song started with a great
tempo but a relatively soft dynamic. This quickly changed about half way through the song when the
dynamics picked up. The loud dynamics with the fast tempo at the end of the song had a very
grandiose sound and left the audience with a great taste in their mouths. Overall, this was a very

The Clarinet is a woodwind musical instrument that evolved from Chalumeau, a single reed
woodwind instrument of the late baroque and early classical time. The Clarinet formed by a
craftsman in Nuremberg named Johann Christoph Daniel. Before he invents the clarinet, only some
national instrument and organ use the reed. Originally, people just use the clarinet to substitute the
Trumpet for the treble, after Daniel to add some keys and an individual mouthpiece, also flared pipe

melody and harmony of the piece. The clarinet is a very beautiful instrument that really does
compliment the other instruments in an orchestra. A clarinet can play as high as a two times over the
staff "c", but at the same time its capable of playing as low as "e" below the staff. This gives it an
ample range to play from. Which is why it's such a great instrument.

through half of my high school years. I was not only a clarinet player, as I also played

Assembling The Clarinet
The clarinet is a woodwind instrument that are typically used for orchestral bands, jazz bands, and
other genres of bands.
There are five pieces to the clarinet, the mouthpiece, barrel, upper joint, lower joint, and the bell.
Assembling a clarinet at first seems quite difficult because it has the most pieces in the woodwind
family, but in actuality it is quite easy once you do it once or twice. When you assemble, clarinet
players typically start with the bottom and up. Although there is not wrong a way to assemble the
clarinet, as it will not affect sound. Assuming if you start from the bottom up, you'd first need to take
the bell. You will attach the bell piece to the lower joint. To attach the upper joint and lower joint

How To Play A Clarinet
Learning a musical instrument can be a worthwhile and fulfilling experience. It has a host benefits,
including increasing various academic skills, improving confidence, aiding with stress relief,
sharpening concentration, added social benefits, and it can also change lives. A great instrument to
learn is the B♭ clarinet. It is easy to learn, yet difficult to master. One of the most basic skills to be
able to play the clarinet includes assembling it.
The first thing to do when assembling a clarinet is to grease the corks. This is done with cork grease
(commonly sold in a tube or pot) and is done so that the different pieces of the instrument are able to
slide together with ease. To grease the corks found on the ends of the various joints, ... Show more

This is a short, cylindrical joint with no keys or rings. The barrel is to be connected to the top tenon
joint. The last piece is the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is the small joint with a rectangular hole; it
is located at the top of the instrument. The reed fits onto the mouthpiece, in front of the opening
facing the player. The thick, blunt end of the reed should aim towards the ground, while the thinner,
curved side should be on top. It should not hang over the top of the mouthpiece, nor sit too low. The
reed must be moist prior to playing, and it is held in place by the ligature. The ligature is the circular
attachment with fastening screws, and is made with leather or metal. Fit the ligature over the reed
and mouthpiece, and tighten the fastening screws; it should be snug, neither too tight nor too loose.
Now the clarinet can be tuned. Clarinets are typically tuned to a concert B♭ and the pitch is adjusted
by pushing in, or pulling out the barrel. If the clarinet is sharp (pitch is too high), pull out the barrel
slightly to lower the pitch. If the clarinet is flat (pitch is too low) push in the barrel; if it is already
pushed in all of the way, make sure all other joints are completely connected with no gaps. Now the
clarinet is ready to

The Concert Hall At Lincoln Center
This was my first time to attend the music concert, and I am very enjoyed both of them. The first
one I went was in the David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. And the second one I went was Merkin
Concert Hall at Kaufman Music Center. Compare with each music hall, I like the David Geffen Hall
better not just because it's big and having many seats, it is first buildings completed on the Lincoln
Center site and home to one of its first resident organization. The New York Philharmonic is the
oldest symphony orchestra in the U.S. Today. I registered for the student rush tickets, so many of the
music tickets are just $16, which sounds nice to me and to have enjoyed more and more music
concerts. Merkin Concert Hall is much smaller than the David Geffen Hall. However, I like their
music event because most of them either having the lower price or free shows.
I had arrived 15 minutes before the Orchestra concert began. When I found my seats, I took a look
around. Most of the people dressed casually. However, there were still having server students who
like me had a notebook and a pen in the hand trying to take notes. My seat was a little far away from
the stage, so I was unable to see how many musicians and what kinds of music instruments they
play. Therefore, I had ideas which I took out the phone and tried to take pictures. However, on the
stage, it was "please turn off your cell phone and electronic devices." So I immediately put my
phone back into the bag. This was happening before

Concert Review: Hoag Concert
On October 28, 2015 I went to the wind ensemble concert in the Hoag auditorium. It was a full
house and the ensemble was fairly large. The set up was nice; the lighting and speakers were set in a
way that would not interfere with the audience's view of the band, and the stage fit the band
perfectly. I don't really have anything else positive to say about the concert; this concert was not as
good as I was expecting and all I noticed were negatives about the performance.
At first when they were on stage they were warming up and I feel like that should have been done
before the concert started. I was confused at whether their first piece was just a warm up or an actual
piece because it was never introduced as one. It had a lot of pauses in it so I was unsure whether it
was some type of practice or if the piece just has pauses. I wish they had ... Show more content on

One thing that really bothered me about this piece is that the first chair clarinet player was tapping
his foot at one tempo, the bass clarinet player right behind him was tapping his foot at another
tempo, and the conductor was at a different pace than the both of them. The conductor did mention
it was the newest piece they had worked on but I feel like it needed more practice. Throughout the
piece the conductor had to remind the band that they were supposed to be quieter than what they
were playing, overall this piece needed more practice.
The third piece was "Incantation and Dance" by John Barnes Chance. The only thing I remember
from this piece is a percussion instrument that sounded kind of like rain drops to me. It felt a little
out of place from the rest of the song but it still worked. After the third piece is the first time anyone
introduced any of the pieces being played that night. The conductor went back and told us the names
of the first, second and third pieces long after they were performed. I thought that was a bit
inconvenient and out of

The melody starts low, as a quiet whirring sound of the flute and oboe slowly envelops the hall. The
audience is quiet, hushed. Slowly yet steadily, the timpani and bass drum lays out a blanket solemn
theme. Another theme of clarinets and trumpets appears, complementing the previous, yet affirming
its own identity with an energetic, new twist of the melody.
My predilection for music can be associated to the thematic development in a concert band. For me,
music has become the spark of my intellectual curiosity with its infinite possibilities. There are
millions of combinations of time and key signatures, chords and melodies, crescendo (fast and swift)
and decrescendos (slow and soft) in the world of music that wait to be arranged to create the
wonders of melodies. My introduction to this world of vast possibilities was during my sophomore
year in high school when I joined the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When asked about the most vital part of the body, people generally answer either the brain or the
heart. After all, the brain decides and the heart pumps the blood. However, the structure that always
goes unnoticed is the backbone. Yet, the backbone lets the brain carry out actions through the
intertwined spinal cord and helps filter blood cells for the heart to pump blood. In short, the
backbone synchronizes the body's functions, without which everything will be in chaos. The bass
drum also plays a similar role in a band. Sure, the shift between crescendo and decrescendo of the
tenor saxophone or the lively tune of flute and clarinet is the most noticeable part of a concert band,
but the bass drum is what keeps everything disciplined. If a bass drum beat is even a thousandth of a
second faster or slower than the desired tempo, the whole song ultimately breakdowns like the chain
reaction. Learning such an important instrument for nearly three years, I have grown to appreciate
the modesty that bass drum displays for such

Review on Brahms's Third Symphony
Symphony No.3, Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)
Op.90, F Major
Allegro con brio

Poco allegretto allegro Brahms was at the zenith of his powers when he wrote the third Symphony.
He finished it during the summer of 1883, in Wiesbaden, whence in early May, soon after his fiftieth
birthday. We can picture Brahms that summer, in the very prime of his life, his great intellectual and
emotional powers fully developed and his mastery widely acknowledged, walking much about

Then a gradual increase of animation forced the theme all the way up to the vigorous cadence. The
recapitulation of themes followed an agitation and restlessness which led to a new and stormy
climax which in turn gave way to blander harmonies and quiet rhythms. The first movement ends to
the first theme in quiet feeling.
A great contrast was found in the second movement, a hymn–like happy mediation of andante.
Three phrases of the tune which was given to clarinets and bassoons, has its cadence echoed by low
strings. Passages developed from the first theme then led gradually to its return in its original calm
mood after a brief climax. A brief coda was made by a new and happy melody referring to the main
theme.
The third movement was lighter than any of the other movements. But the middle section referred to
the single note motive which was grown as symphony progressed.
With the finale the grand returned, peoples were at once concerned with weighty issues. The
suspension was highly impressive making peoples feel something great impending. The themes
were many and various. But they flowed from one to another smoothly. Then the movement was

a series of developments some ingenious and some powerful. Then the movement went into end.

A Misunderstanding Of Gerald Finzi's Music
One misunderstanding of Finzi's style to those reflecting on his music, was that he refused to use
higher dissonant notes, which was a component in twentieth–century music. This is a way that
people recognized Finzi's work because he kept his options open with new possibilities, but
restricted himself from specific rules. For example, "a dominant seventh chord in a motet by Byrd is
as dissonant in its context as the opening chord of the finale of Beethoven's ninth symphony." In
other words, those characteristics were prominent in determining pieces by other composers, such
that small notation was recognizable for Finzi's work.
Compositions
Subsequently, Gerald Finzi's musical compositions gathered much fame, but in a rare storyline.
Throughout his life, only two of Finzi's pieces were physically made. Dies natalis, and White–
flowering days are the pieces Finzi composed. Furthermore, he was not encouraged to record his
compositions, he was only interactive in conducting his own music in concerts and broadcasts.
During the 1939–1945 war, his musical talent was surpassed for the moment being. Finzi continued
to develop as he felt more intentions for his musical skills when observing the new characteristics of
his country during the war. Although he continued to compose, a majority of his music was not yet
recorded until after his death. An example would be a clarinet concerto, Five Bagatelles, which was
written during the war to portray the passing moments during his

Personal Narrative: My Spring Concert Band
For the Spring Concert this year, the Concert Band played three very different and technically
demanding pieces, which includes "Endless Rainbows," "Semper Fidelis," and "Courtly Airs and
Dances." Though these three pieces were different in mood, each piece still required proper tone,
intonation, balance, and full–effort from every musician in the band. Personally, to make sure that I
was putting my best effort in rehearsing the pieces in class, I would make sure that I played with a
warm, open, dark, round tone by taking in dark air and relaxing the muscles in the back of my throat
and mouth and making sure that my tongue was not interfering with my relaxed muscles of my
throat. Furthermore, I would make sure that when holding a note for a couple of beats, I would make
sure that I would be listening to the people around me and the bass line for any frequencies or just
obvious signs telling me if I was flat or sharp. I would do the same at home, too to make sure that I
had as open of a tone as possible and most of my notes are in tune. All in all, I can say being in

In the beginning of the piece, I feel as though the band could have done better in terms of balance,
such that some sections were louder than the others, such as the flutes and clarinets. In continuation,
at measure 20, the flutes could have done a better job at intonation so that the part would have
sounded smoother. In the discussion of the flutes and clarinets, we also could have gotten in the runs
that were not opted out so that the piece would have sounded fuller. Though despite this, the piece
did sound very interesting with the whole ensemble, and was a good way to end our spring concert.

Fall Concert Review
At 7:30 P.M. on October 17th, the Sartell Wind Ensemble performed in the Sartell High School
gymnasium. The three pieces that the Sartell band played were Imaginarium, Buenaventura, and
Baba Yetu. Imaginarium is a dream like program piece and it resembles a person imagining or
daydreaming. Buenaventura is a world Latin piece and it begins with a slow Latin beginning and
then it featured an up tempo finish. Baba Yetu was performed by the Wind Ensemble and with the
Sartell choirs and other band. This piece is considered to be an African Folk song. In this review, I
will evaluate and analyze the dynamics and band blending of the pieces.

At the very beginning of the piece, it was a little bit shaky as the brass was a little bit too loud over
the winds. The alto solo at measure 5 was played over the band though and that set a good tone for
the piece. At measure 13, there was a good blend between trumpets, trombones, and flutes. At
measure 31, the clarinets and alto saxophones did a good job carrying the melody. At measure 51 the
band did a good job of letting the trumpets play the melody in the piece. At measure 59, the
trombones were the clear melody and they played at an appropriate dynamic marking. At measure
67, backgrounds were overplaying a bit and the nice flute melody was covered. The trumpets did a
good job of controlling the melody at measure 73. At measure 101, the band did a good job of
contrasting the flute melody because the other sections of the band came in quietly. The alto
saxophone and clarinet melody at measure 120 was played above the rest of the band, but if could
have been a little bit louder. From measures 128 to 140, it was hard to distinguish a certain melody.
The trombone melody at measure 148 could have been cleaner and louder as it was hard to listen to
in the recording. The rest of the piece had a good melody, though as it was mainly carried by
trumpets and winds. Overall, the band blending could have been a little bit better, but it still sounded

How Sax Changed The Musical World
The inventor of the saxophone, Antoine–Joseph "Adolphe" Sax, was a genius inventor. His
invention of the saxophone and other instruments changed the musical world and his influence still
felt today in jazz bands across the world, even though he never got to see his inventions become as
popular as they are today. Sax had many difficult challenges to face throughout his life, but he
persevered and we can learn many lessons from his example.
Adolphe Sax was born in Dinant, Belgium on November 6, 1814 and died in Paris, France on
February 7, 1894. His father, Charles–Joseph Sax was a joiner–cabinetmaker who became a musical
instrument constructor after he was ordered by William I of Orange to supply instruments for Dutch
army bands. As a young boy, Sax took an interest in his father's work and spent much of his time in
his father's workshop where he helped produce musical instruments for the Dutch army. Sax proved
to be quite skilled at. At the young age of 16, Sax had a successful workshop and was making good
quality instruments and even creating new ones himself. At 20, Adolphe Sax showed off nine
different inventions at an industrial fair in Belgium and was awarded a medal. Sax also studied the
flute and singing in his free time. Sax's interest in music and instrument construction led him to
want to improve the tone of the bass clarinet. This interest eventually led to a new line of inventions
called saxophones, which had 14 different variations. Some of these include the E

Mozart Clarinet Concerto Essay
Introduction
One of the problems clarinetists of the 21st century face when performing Mozart's Clarinet
Concerto, K. 622, is creating a performance that is memorable while keeping the authentic integrity
of the work. Many clarinetists who perform this work are often concerned with how they should the
approach and execute the concerto. Any musician who tackles any new work will approach it by
researching historical information on the composer and work, do a musical analysis, and gathering
recordings of other interpretations of the same work. This approach will not only allow the
performer to be fully immersed in the piece but allow for the performer to create a memorable
interpretation.

He first decided to use the clarinet in his composition of Divertimento, K 113, due to the singing
qualities it possessed. He composed the Clarinet Concerto in 1791 for a clarinetist by the name of
Anton Stadler. The concerto was on one of the Mozart's last compositions and his last concerto for a
solo instrument. The composition of the piece began in 1787 for basset horn in G with about 200
measures and then was revisited in the last few weeks of Mozart's life in 1791.
When he returned to the piece in 1791, Mozart decided to change the key and the instrumentation of
the piece. The key was changed from G major to A major and the instrument of choice was the
basset clarinet in A. Stadler designed the basset clarinet. Compared to the current clarinet, the basset
clarinet had a range that was 2 whole tones lower than a normal clarinet. Francoeur's Diapason
general gives tonal qualities of various clarinets and describes the G clarinet's sound as "sweet, sad,
and lugubrious" (Lawson, pg. 29). When describing the tonal quality of the A clarinet, it I said to
have "a very sweet sound, [that it] much less somber than the G and with a great range" (Lawson,

The Origin Of The Clarinet In The 1600's
The origination of the clarinet began in the 1600's. It was an improved version of the Chalumeau –
the first narrow reed instrument. The difference between the two instruments was that, the clarinet
now had two extra keys, and it contained a higher range by over two octaves! He also invented a
better mouthpiece, and a slightly improved bell. 1690, the clarinet was created. It is known to be a
"single reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube". All the credit for this creation goes to
Johann Christopher Denver and his son Jacob Denver. Nuremberg, Germany was the location where
the clarinet was made. Even though the Clarinet came to existence in 1690, it took many decades
afterwards for it be finalized. Towards the end of the 1700's, the clarinet met new designs and
features. The cut holes, where we cover our fingers with, was experimented on many times. They
needed to see which shape and size had the best effect, in terms of sound. After the cut holes were
mastered, notes became an issue to create. But, with the help of Iwan Mutters 13 keyed model
everything was falling together. Furthermore, the fingering system developed by Theobald Boehm
was adapted to the clarinet. This system is best known as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

"multi–talents". The clarinets first big step forward was due to Wolfgang Mozart. He brought the
clarinet to real life by penning a clarinet concerto. A concerto is "a musical composition for a solo

large scale". Till date, this concerto is known to be one of the most astonishing pieces to

What is the Clarinet?
What do people think when they hear the word clarinet? When most people hear this they think it is
a kind of car or a disease. In some cases if they know what a clarinet is they think of Squidward
Tentacles from the popular show Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon. So what exactly is a
clarinet? The clarinet is a woodwind instrument and has the largest range of pitches in a woodwind
section. There are thirteen different kinds of clarinet in the clarinet family. Clarinets come in many
different sizes, with different pitch ranges but the most common clarinet is the Soprano clarinet or
commonly known as the b flat clarinet. Johann Christoph Denner is given the most credit for
making the clarinet which he made around in the sixteenth hundreds. J.C. Denner added two more
keys to the chalumeau which was the first original clarinet by him doing this it increased it's octave
range. A chalumeau looks like a large recorder. The pitch of a clarinet can very from the musician,
music, instrument, and mouthpiece. It is unknown where the clarinet was first made but resources
say that it was either made in Germany or France A clarinet consists of eight different parts. The
single reed, ligature, mouthpiece, barrel, middle joint, bridge key, lower section, and the bell. The
clarinet is made out of a pingo tree also known as African Blackwood. Most modern day clarinets
are made out of plastic. The reed of the clarinet is made out of reed grass which is formed in the

Essay On The Clarinet
"One of these, the chalumeau (a term also used for a double–reed instrument), was known to
Denner; apparently his attempts to refine the chalumeau led to his invention of the clarinet."
(Adullah, M et al. 2015). Johann Christoph Denner was a German musician who is said to have
created the first known clarinet. He made and improved many woodwind instruments. He also had
children who helped him work. Johann Christoph Denner created the clarinet, worked
interdependently to innovate ways to overcome the small note range of the chalumeau, and
illuminated the world by making the chalumeau into what is now a common modern day instrument.
Johann Christoph Denner created the clarinet soon after 1698 (Barrett, G. 1999). (Adullah, M et al.

with clarinet players. "The clarinet's tone is really very complimentary to strings and vice–versa"
(Denner, J. 2008). The clarinet is also used in some jazz bands. The sound is somewhat mysterious,
allowing it to be used in many different pieces by different people. "His friend, Anton Salder was a

Johann Christoph Denner turned the chalumeau into the modern clarinet with the help of many other

How To Play The Clarinet
Today I am going to attempt to teach you to play the clarinet. Many of you are probably thinking:
How hard could it be? It's easy? Right? Well, let me tell you you guys are completely incorrect. The
clarinet a woodwind instrument, there are two main categories of woodwinds. The first is the basic
woodwind– which are flutes (there are many different types of flutes, like the piccolo), and the reed
instruments, otherwise called reed pipes. This category includes clarinets (again there are many
types like the b flat and E flat) and Saxophones ( Tenor Sax, Alto Sax and Bass Sax). Since clarinets
are classified as reed instruments, it is obvious that you would need a reed to play it. Before I go into
the steps I should probably tell you what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First you have the mouthpiece, and on the mouthpiece you will find a metal cylinder – this is called

clarinet connects to the bottom of the mouthpiece. Below the barrel, is a part of the clarinet called
the upper joint. The upper joint, as you may have guesses connects to the barrel. The next part of the
clarinet I will discuss with you is called the lower joint. The lower joint connects to the upper joint.
The last piece you will need to know is called the bell. The bell connects to the lower joint. Each of
the parts of the clarinet are connected by pieces called cork tenons. Now that you know all the major

The Clarinet Essay
The clarinet's versatility makes it an ideal instrument for several genres of music. The most popular
genres use the clarinet because of its flexibility, virtuosity and ability to play in the extremes of the
instrument's range. It is a core member of the orchestra and blends well with woodwind, brass and
string instruments.
Jazz
Clarinets appear regularly in jazz ensembles. The laid–back nature of the instrument allows the
clarinet to play with ease and nuance. These characteristics make it suitable for playing extended
solos and complex passages as the jazz ensemble works through modulations resulting in key
changes.
A famous type of jazz music, called Dixieland jazz, features the clarinet prominently. Dixieland jazz

Popular
Popular music uses the clarinet for background music and solos. "The Beatles" used the clarinet
extensively in songs. Two famous examples include "When I'm Sixty Four" and "Here Comes the
Sun." The clarinet's smooth tone and texture lends itself well to rock and popular music.
Another famous group by the name of Muse wrote a song for bass clarinet solo titled "I belong to
you." Small popular bands find that the clarinet is a suitable addition to the standard orchestration of
guitar, voice and percussion.
Klezmer
Klezmer music's roots go back to the immigrants to the United States in 1880. The genre was
initiated in Eastern Europe but the commonly known music that goes by the name of Klezmer music
wasn't initiated until musicians emigrated to the United States. Klezmer music is ideal for the
clarinet and features the clarinet in solo passages along with a keyboard instrument known as the
dulcimer, violin, viola, bass, small drum and sometimes included flute and trumpet.

The first movement: Allegro begins with an orchestral statement of the main theme. Then the theme
is repeated by the solo clarinet, creating a more desolate atmosphere. Eventually the music develops
into a dramatic turn after a tutti, leading back to the main theme, where the Alberti bass and
arpeggios for the solo clarinet are restated, then ending the movement in a relatively more joyful
tutti in A major. The second movement: Adagio, written in ternary form ABA, begins with the solo
clarinet playing the main theme of the concerto, with the orchestra restating the theme again.
Although this movement starts with a tranquil feel, it develops into a more forceful, enthusiastic
tone. Finally the third movement Rondo: Allegro has a happier refrain, but occasionally recalling the
melancholy mood from the first movement, also creating quiet music, silence, which I felt were a
big part of the musical piece. Overall, the Clarinet Concerto is best portrayed in Brian Robins' words
"valedictory and autumnal."

Joining Band Essay
The Best Decision I ever made: Joining Band
Five years ago, I was introduced to the subject of band by my best friend and that introduction
sowed the seed to join. The next decision I faced was the important choice of an instrument, which
was not very hard for me. I chose the clarinet because it was the only one that responded with a
grateful sound. Without my license and parents working late at night, I had to search for a ride since
I assumed my friend, who attended band on a different day, could take me. Getting up an hour
earlier than most students proved to be a struggle for me, but as time went on it became less
challenging. Joining band was and is more than a musical exercise for me; it equates unity with
harmony, personal growth with rhythm, and benefits with melody on the larger playing field of life.
Harmony is defined as the combination of sounds to produce chords which can be compared to the
coming together first of my instrument and me and the two of us with the band. My clarinet and ...

Symphony No.4 in E minor, Op. 98 by Johannes Brahms from the Baroque Period. It was written in
Austria by 1880s. The symphony is scored for two flutes (one doubling on piccolo), two oboes, two
clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, triangle
and strings. They finish at around 13:35. The members of the orchestra stood and received a
standing ovation. Around 16:00, Thomas says that the composer of the next piece is Lou Harrison.

A tribute to Patsy Cline
A tribute to Patsy Cline with Mandy Barnett and the Nashville Symphony On November fourteenth
at eight o'clock p.m. I attended a Patsy Cline tribute concert featuring Mandy Barnett and the
Nashville Symphony with my grandparents. On that particular Friday night, it had been raining for
most of the day. My grandparents came and picked me up at five o'clock in hopes of going to a nice
dinner before the show. Once we got on the road, it was clear that our itinerary was not going to
work out as we had planned it to. There was wreck after wreck, leaving most of the interstates
backed up and some closed until late that night. We had to turn around and drive through Mount
Juliet to make it to the concert right on time. None of us had ever been ... Show more content on

The partricular piece is very upbeat and outgoing. As the music continues the song continues to
grow faster resulting in a vibrant folk dance. The Nashville symphony did a great job performing
this piece and portraying the light–heartedness and fun that Enesco intended. The next work that the
Nashville symphony performed was George Gershwin's, "Rhapsody in Blue." This rhapsody
combines classical music with some jazz infuences. The score for this calls for one flute, one oboe,
one clarinet in E–flat, one clarinet in B– flat, one bass clarinet in B–flat, one heckelphone, one
sporanino saxaphone in E–flat, one soprano saxaphone in B–flat, one alto saxaphone in E–flat, one
tenor saxaphone in B–flat, and one baratone saxaphone in E–flat for the woodwins. For the brass, it
called for two horns, two trumpets, two flugelhorns, euphonium, three trombones, and one tuba. On
percussion it called for, one set of drums, one timpani set, and a trap set. Keyboards called for, two
painos, one celesta, and one accordian. Finally, on strings, a banjo, violins, and string basses were
played. Rhapsody in Blue is considered one of the top one hundred most influencial songs. The song
paints a picture of a busy, fast paced city, which many people can relate to in today's society. Still
today Rhapsody in Blue is one of the top twenty five most played songs. George Gershwin created a
timeless piece that will be performed around the world for many years to come. The

Concert Report For A Wind Concert

  • 1. Concert Report For A Wind Concert Eric Fang, Wind Symphony Concert Report On Friday, October twenty–second, Simi Valley High School had their fall concert, however, they only had two bands so there was not much to write about. The concert band opened up with, Apparitions, by Brian Balmages, which was a song with a very mysterious intro with the percussion. The song is later developed into a soprano winds melody which was very well balanced with its counter and support. Unfortunately before a very beautiful, yet eerie flute solo they were somewhat out of tune, and during it, the flutes were talking to each other. Later, the soprano melody turns into a brass dominated scene, with the trumpets being slightly too loud and overtaking the rest of the band. Overall, the piece was very well executed with great attacks, releases, and flow. However there was little to no vibrato in the song. After that song, The Magician's Secret, by Joseph Eidson was stated by a flute squeak, but evens out into a nice jumpy beginning. Throughout the many brass and high winds chords, they were mostly out of tune, but the pulsing and tempo was very well done and controlled which gave the theme of smoothness and elegance. While the band was going great with strong and obvious dynamics, one of the trumpets messed up and showed it. Luckily, a great story of adventure and curiosity manage to cover him up and retain the moving melody. As the song ended, I personally felt the end was a bit too staccato and the overall song had no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The At 2 : Beginning Of What Will Be A Very Polyphonic... The oboe at 2:26 is the beginning of what will be a very polyphonic section (2:26–3:03). The oboe sound here is the perfect intro/opening to this section because it is welcoming and almost reminds me of springtime. It starts off by moving up the scale slowly and then returning to the tonic. It then moves quickly up the scale and returns to the tonic. It is very legato and happy sounding. The flute at 2:26 is very whimsical and involves a lot of switching between 2 notes with small intervals. It complements the opening oboe well and contributes to the happy spring like opening to the section. When the clarinet chimes in at 2:31 it immediately pierces the ear and takes over the section. The melody goes up once in pitch, and then quickly falls and rises again. The high note is then held for an extended period of time until the clarinet trickles out of the note by descending the scale. This melody is repeated for the whole section by the clarinet. There are some slight variations, but for the most part the melody stays the same and is repeated for the whole section. There are times where it is tough to hear the clarinet due to the other instruments but it is there. The low instruments that come in at 2:39 bring a whole new mood to the section. Their different timbre brings a sense of danger approaching. The constant strike of the cello gives the piece a profound beat and almost sounds like the big mean footsteps of danger approaching. The introduction of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Clarinet Research Papers "It's all fun and games until someone breaks a reed." – Anonymous (Nee). Clarinets and saxophones are two different instruments that are in the woodwind family. The clarinet was the first instrument I learned, and I played it in concert band for middle school and in marching band during my first two years of high school. I learned the tenor saxophone at the end of my freshman year, and I play it for jazz band and show choir pit. They are both equally fun instruments to play, and they are not too difficult to play. The clarinet and saxophone are different in ways such as history, shape, keys, sound and variety but are also similar in these ways. Firstly, the history of the clarinet and saxophone are different. The clarinet is a modern version of a directly developed from the instrument, Chalumeau ("The Clarinet"). The creator of the clarinet, Johann Christoph Denner and his son, also named Johann, decided to make some changes to the chalumeau. They added keys, a bigger bell and a separate mouthpiece. The keys made the largest impact because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each one has certain ones that are most commonly known and some that people have never heard of. The clarinets family members that are in a regular concert band are usually a B flat clarinet, which is the most common, and the bass clarinet. The saxophone has more of its family members in a regular concert band. There is the most common, which is an alto saxophone. There also is the soprano, tenor and baritone. There are plenty more of each instrument, but those are the most common instruments of a clarinet and saxophone in concert band. In conclusion, the clarinet and saxophone are two beautiful sounding instruments that can be in many types of music. • 7. The Chalumeau and the Clarinet Essay This paper will explore the early instrument known as the chalumeau and the various types of instruments that have evolved from it. The chalumeau group of instruments were folk instruments that were played with a single reed and the chalumeau itself is most commonly known as the predecessor to the modern–day clarinet. The instrument has only eight tone–holes on its cylindrical bore. There are many other single reed instruments that resemble the chalumeau and were in existence during the same time period. I will be discussing the history of the chalumeau and its repertoire, similar instruments of the time, and the evolution from the chalumeau to the modern day clarinet. My sources will include scholarly articles from online databases, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most common of these was the soprano chalumeau, but alto, tenor, and bass versions of the instrument existed as well (Lawson). There is also evidence that there was no set key for these instruments to be pitched in. There are a few examples of surviving chalumeau to back up these claims. The first one, created by a many by the name of Liebav, is pitched in C and is 33 centimeters in length. A few more exist made by Denner and Klenig are all pitched in F and are around 50 centimeters long (Lawson). While we have surviving examples of soprano, alto, and tenor chalumeau, there are no remaining bass chalumeau for us to examine. The closest we are able to come to the bass chalumeau are three remaining instruments close to the bass clarinet in size, but they more resemble the bassoon due to their angled finger holes (Lawson). The word chalumeau itself comes to us from both Greek and Latin roots. The Greek word calamaulos means "a pipe of reed" and the Latin word calamellus translates to "little reed" (Hunt). Both words refer to the chalumeau's use of a single–reed. Because of its resemblance to many other baroque instruments, the term "chalumeau" is also used to describe many different wind instruments in the shape of a pipe, most often resembling the recorder, that are played through the use of a single or double reed (Albert 10). For instance, the mock trumpet from seventeenth century England is classified as a chalumeau ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Techniques Used by Clarinet Players Technique is very important for all musicians of all types, especially for Clarinet players. Many of the techniques are vital for a great musician to understand. Things such as embouchure, vibrato and tone effects are all things that are required by the musician. I will be investigating the embouchure and how a correct one will substantially increase your prowess as a woodwind, particularly clarinet, player. The clarinet is a woodwind instrument that has a single reed mouthpiece. Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register key to the earlier Chalumea. Having a correct embouchure is vitally important to playing woodwind instruments. Structure 1. Embouchure. 2. Different types of embouchures in different people. 3. Research into different kinds of embouchure and how other people do it. 4. Synthesis of why it is very important to have an good embouchure. With the woodwinds, the sound is generated by a reed and not with the lips. The embouchure is therefore based on sealing the area around the reed and the mouthpiece. This makes sure that there is no air escaping from either side of the mouthpiece when the musician is blowing. A reed instrument works by having the musician blowing a steady breath of air over the reed and through the mouthpiece. The vibrations of the reed are what produce the sound that makes up the notes. The harder or stronger the air is passing over the reed the higher the pitch of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Creativity In Clarinet Creativity. What does that word make you think of? A person, place, object, a feeling? Do you think of a sunset or fashion designers or artists? Creativity is such a broad concept that it's different for everyone. If you put one hundred people in a room and told them to write down the first thing they thought of when they heard the word creativity I bet no two people would have the exact same answer. For me creativity is brought to me in my clarinet, and the way it was created as well as the music it produces. When you first see a clarinet you probably think nothing about it, but when you really think about it you can see the beauty in it. When you examine it closer you can really see how impressive it is how all the parts and pieces fit together. You can see how the dark, beautiful wood of the clarinet pairs with the shiny silver of the keys. Craftsmanship is shown in the way the reeds are made. It takes precision and skill to get the reed as thin as it is and still be able to help produce the wonderful sound of the clarinet. The best way to witness the creativity of a clarinet is to listen to the melodic noises it makes. It's not noticeable in an orchestra of instruments, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Songs can make you happy, sad, angry, hopeful, or depressed. It's a great feeling when you're playing, and you can feel goosebumps on your arm from the emotion the music evokes. • 13. Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis Watching Louis Armstrong's live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure, especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods' entrance on vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert. As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each song throughout the concert. Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, "Sleepy Time Down South," before formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion. Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and was named "Indiana." In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the performer's immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from beginning to end. After "Indiana" was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante "Black and Blue." Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a piano level until Armstrong's trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The song's ... • 15. Britten Sections Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is broken up into many sections. This allows someone with no prior experience listening to orchestras to understand the different instrumental sections. The piece begins with broad sections, continues with individual instruments, and ends demonstrating musical vocabulary. Each variation showcases different instruments ranging from the woodwinds to the percussion. The woodwind section consists of flutes, piccolos, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons. It is common for a percussionist to play several different instruments in a symphony orchestra or concert band. Variation number three features clarinets. Clarinets are single– reed instruments. Sound is produced by the vibrations of air in the tube. This instrument can produce a wide diversity of tone color and dynamics. Other instrument families played in this variation include the percussion. The double bass, sometimes called the bass, is played in variation number eight. The sound is produced when a bow is drawn across the strings. The strings can also be plucked by the musician's fingers. A double bass is the largest of the string family and has the lowest range. Other instrument families in this variation include percussion and woodwind instruments. Variation number eleven showcases the trumpets. Sound is created when the musician blows in the cup–shaped mouth piece. The vibrations produced are amplified throughout the tube. The trumpet gives a brilliant, loud, and penetrating noise. • 17. Aaron Copland Music Analysis Aaron Copland is a twentieth century American composer, teacher, and conductor. Schuman (1980), refers to Copland as the "Dean of American Composers", which he attributes to his stylistic contributions to American culture including film. His works includes songs, chamber music, ballets, theater, symphony orchestra, solos, and chorus. Copland's approach to composing included twelve– tone, a basic exhibition of serialism. Crawford & Hamberlin (2013), describe this style as organizing twelve pitches of the chromatic scale into a unique pattern. This method expressed a way of organizing notes freely, without focusing on a key center. To non–musical ears, the atonality heard is interpreted as strange, exotic, or in some cases esthetically pleasing. Copland's musical influence includes his time in Paris during the 1920's with Stravinsky, a Russian Nationalist. Stravinsky's style was inclusive of traditional Russian folk music, evident in his ballet Petrushka (Navarro 2011). Copland composed Outdoor Overture in 1938, as a request from Alexander Richter, Director of Music at the High School of Music and Arts in New York City. Pease (2015), attributes the inspiration behind this composition from Richter's campaign: American Music for American Youth. The score (APPENDIX A), shares program notes, along with an extended synopsis of the piece. The basis for Outdoor Overture, is a theme expressed initially by the upper woodwinds and strings (APPENDIX B). The idea is introduced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Botti Performance Review On February 10, 2017, I attended Chris Botti's nearly sold out show at the Hilbert Circle Theater. This was the most brilliant performance I have ever seen. While I was not familiar with Botti before the show, I had been asked on a date by a guy from church who was a fan of his work. After having dinner at Oceanaire, we arrived at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, where women were dressed from casual attire with black pants to full length ball gowns with mink fur coats, while the men wore suits or sports coats with dress pants. Our seats were located in the middle of the theatre on the edge of the balcony in front of the stage. Botti created an intimate atmosphere as he related the show to a Valentine's Day theme. The other musicians in Botti's band included Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Richie Goods on bass, Lee Pearson on drums and Ben Butler on the electric guitar. Keezer played at the mezzopiano dynamic level. Botti played at the piannissmo dynamic level in "The Look of Love" but in some of his other songs he would begin in a soft piano and crescendo to a mezzo forte with some subito changes from mezzo piano to forte. While there was contrast due to the nature of jazz, most of the harmonies were consonant and the melodies were conjunct and pleasant to hear. There was never a moment in the performance where I felt the need for tension to be resolved, it was generally smooth. Overall, the wind instruments played included a bass clarinet, clarinets, an English horn, flutes, a piccolo, oboes, and bassoons. Among the strings heard were violins, violas, cellos, a harp, and double basses. Besides the trumpet, the concert included other brass instruments such as French horns, trombones, and a ... • 21. The Clarinet Research Paper The clarinet is a single–reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube. The clarinet is a very interesting instrument that plays good music. It is typically used in band ensembles. It is made out of either plastic or wood. The reed is a part of the clarinet that it can't be played without. The clarinet was originated a long time ago and it has an interesting manufacturing process. The clarinet originated around 2700 B.C. in Egypt. The Egyptians created this instrument called the zummara (sometimes called the memet). The zummara was a single reed instrument, much like the modern day clarinet. Different than the clarinet, the zummara had two tubes instead of one. The first true single reed instrument was called the chalumeau. The chalumeau ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First they they cut logs to 3–4 feet long then they have to season the wood. To season the wood they either have to keep it in open air for several months or they dry it in a kiln. Then the logs are split and sawed to the correct lengths of the clarinet body pieces. The body pieces look like long rectangular blocks and pyramidal shapes for the barrel. These pieces are called billets. "When the manufacturer receives the billets, workers inspect the lot. Then skilled workers place the billets on a borer, which drills a hole lengthwise through the center of each piece."(Clarinet). After they drill it, the wood then is shaped like a cylinder. Then they make the wood smooth and they season the wood again. When the wood is seasoned again they then cut it into the size of the actual clarinet. Then they paint it with black dye. On the plastic models, they make the body parts for the clarinet through injection molding. Then they melt plastic pellets and put them in the molds. Then they may have to fix it up a little unless it came out of the mold perfectly. The next step is boring the holes. They use different drill bits for this because not all the holes are the same size. Then they begin to construct the keys. They usually use casts for this step. When the keys are finished they have put the pads on them. Then they mount the keys on small posts and put them on the clarinet. They then put the final touches on the clarinet ... • 25. History Of The Clarinet Essay The clarinet is a woodwind instrament consisting of a cylindrical wood, metal, or ebonite pipe with a bell–shaped opening at one end and a mouthpiece at the other end, to which a thin reed is attached. The clarinet has five different sections, the mouthpiece, the barrel, the upper section, the lower section, and the bell. The length of the entire instrument is 60 cm long. The mouthpiece section consists of a slotted cylinder, to which a reed is attached by a metal clamp called a ligature. The mouthpiece plugs into the next section which is a barrel. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the mid eighteenth century, the five key clarinet became standard. In 1844, the clarinet was further revised into what we know of it today. Around the beginning of the eighteenth century, a German instrument maker, Johann Christoff Denner invented the clarinet by improving the chalumeau. He did this by doubling the length of the chalumeau and adding two keys. The clarinet slowly acquired more keys during the eighteenth century. By 1750 the five key clarinet was the standard. In 1844, two french musicians, Louis– Augustine Buffet and Hyacinthe Klosé made the most significant improvement in the instruments history. They applied the Boehm flute key system to the clarinet. This was done by placing each hole in different places so that each note would have the same tone quality. Then, they devised a key system that would cover all the holes. The improvements were a success, and the newly revised instrument became popular all over the world. The clarinet produces sound when air passes over the reed. The reed then vibrates, causing the flowing air to vibrate, thus producing sound. The air then exits the nearest opening. The farther the air travels before exiting, the deeper and lower the note will be. To produce a wide variety of notes, the clarinet has many keys and holes. Pressing different combinations of keys will result in different notes. Since the clarinet is a very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The upbeat tempo, lead by the flutes and clarinets, made the song very enjoyable to hear and also had a very happy feel to it, which, in my mind, made it a very appropriate closer. The song started with a great tempo but a relatively soft dynamic. This quickly changed about half way through the song when the dynamics picked up. It has a host benefits, including increasing various academic skills, improving confidence, aiding with stress relief, sharpening concentration, added social benefits, and it can also change lives. A great instrument to learn is the B♭ clarinet. It is easy to learn, yet difficult to master. One of the most basic skills to be able to play the clarinet includes assembling it. The first thing to do when assembling a clarinet is to grease the corks. The reed fits onto the mouthpiece, in front of the opening facing the player. The thick, blunt end of the reed should aim towards the ground, while the thinner, curved side should be on top. It should not hang over the top of the mouthpiece, nor sit too low. The reed must be moist prior to playing, and it is held in place by the ligature. The ligature is the circular attachment with fastening screws, and is made with leather or metal. Fit the ligature over the reed and mouthpiece, and tighten the fastening screws; it should be snug, neither too tight nor too loose. Now the clarinet can be tuned. If the clarinet is sharp (pitch is too high), pull out the barrel slightly to lower the pitch. Three phrases of the tune which was given to clarinets and bassoons, has its cadence echoed by low strings. Passages developed from the first theme then led gradually to its return in its original calm mood after a brief climax. A brief coda was made by a new and happy melody referring to the main theme. • 48. A Misunderstanding Of Gerald Finzi's Music One misunderstanding of Finzi's style to those reflecting on his music, was that he refused to use higher dissonant notes, which was a component in twentieth–century music. This is a way that people recognized Finzi's work because he kept his options open with new possibilities, but restricted himself from specific rules. For example, "a dominant seventh chord in a motet by Byrd is as dissonant in its context as the opening chord of the finale of Beethoven's ninth symphony." In other words, those characteristics were prominent in determining pieces by other composers, such that small notation was recognizable for Finzi's work. Compositions Subsequently, Gerald Finzi's musical compositions gathered much fame, but in a rare storyline. Throughout his life, only two of Finzi's pieces were physically made. Dies natalis, and White– flowering days are the pieces Finzi composed. Furthermore, he was not encouraged to record his compositions, he was only interactive in conducting his own music in concerts and broadcasts. During the 1939–1945 war, his musical talent was surpassed for the moment being. Finzi continued to develop as he felt more intentions for his musical skills when observing the new characteristics of his country during the war. Although he continued to compose, a majority of his music was not yet recorded until after his death. Personal Narrative: My Spring Concert Band For the Spring Concert this year, the Concert Band played three very different and technically demanding pieces, which includes "Endless Rainbows," "Semper Fidelis," and "Courtly Airs and Dances." Though these three pieces were different in mood, each piece still required proper tone, intonation, balance, and full–effort from every musician in the band. Personally, to make sure that I was putting my best effort in rehearsing the pieces in class, I would make sure that I played with a warm, open, dark, round tone by taking in dark air and relaxing the muscles in the back of my throat and mouth and making sure that my tongue was not interfering with my relaxed muscles of my throat. Furthermore, I would make sure that when holding a note for a couple of beats, I would make sure that I would be listening to the people around me and the bass line for any frequencies or just obvious signs telling me if I was flat or sharp. His father, Charles–Joseph Sax was a joiner–cabinetmaker who became a musical instrument constructor after he was ordered by William I of Orange to supply instruments for Dutch army bands. As a young boy, Sax took an interest in his father's work and spent much of his time in his father's workshop where he helped produce musical instruments for the Dutch army. Sax proved to be quite skilled at. At the young age of 16, Sax had a successful workshop and was making good quality instruments and even creating new ones himself. At 20, Adolphe Sax showed off nine different inventions at an industrial fair in Belgium and was awarded a medal. Sax also studied the flute and singing in his free time. Sax's interest in music and instrument construction led him to want to improve the tone of the bass clarinet. This interest eventually led to a new line of inventions called saxophones, which had 14 different variations. Some of these include the E ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He composed the Clarinet Concerto in 1791 for a clarinetist by the name of Anton Stadler. The concerto was on one of the Mozart's last compositions and his last concerto for a solo instrument. The composition of the piece began in 1787 for basset horn in G with about 200 measures and then was revisited in the last few weeks of Mozart's life in 1791. When he returned to the piece in 1791, Mozart decided to change the key and the instrumentation of the piece. The key was changed from G major to A major and the instrument of choice was the basset clarinet in A. Stadler designed the basset clarinet. Compared to the current clarinet, the basset clarinet had a range that was 2 whole tones lower than a normal clarinet. Francoeur's Diapason general gives tonal qualities of various clarinets and describes the G clarinet's sound as "sweet, sad, and lugubrious" (Lawson, pg. 29). When describing the tonal quality of the A clarinet, it I said to have "a very sweet sound, [that it] much less somber than the G and with a great range" (Lawson, pg. ... • 58. The Origin Of The Clarinet In The 1600's The origination of the clarinet began in the 1600's. It was an improved version of the Chalumeau – the first narrow reed instrument. The difference between the two instruments was that, the clarinet now had two extra keys, and it contained a higher range by over two octaves! He also invented a better mouthpiece, and a slightly improved bell. 1690, the clarinet was created. It is known to be a "single reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube". All the credit for this creation goes to Johann Christopher Denver and his son Jacob Denver. Nuremberg, Germany was the location where the clarinet was made. Even though the Clarinet came to existence in 1690, it took many decades afterwards for it be finalized. Towards the end of the 1700's, the clarinet met new designs and features. The cut holes, where we cover our fingers with, was experimented on many times. They needed to see which shape and size had the best effect, in terms of sound. After the cut holes were mastered, notes became an issue to create. But, with the help of Iwan Mutters 13 keyed model everything was falling together. My Experience In Music I wanted to tell you about my experience in the world of music and how it helped me express myself and I started to find my talents as well as learn who I was and to not let bullying stop me from doing what I loved to do. I used to think that I did not have great skills in the music field. Even though everyone in my family is a music person I did not learn or get the skills like they did. But I did not want to take gym because I got teased a lot for it. I was bullied a lot in school so wanted to try something new in middle school and my only other option was band and even though I was teased for being in band and being called a band geek it's a step that started to change my experience in life and how I interacted with others and my confidence to try new things and have confidence in myself and to trust myself. I was in the 6th grade and I was just trying to figure out who I was. I started out looking at all the instruments they had. Then the band director had us try several of the instruments. Well let's just say I did not like the trumpet, flute my hands could not fit well on that and most girls played that as well so I wanted something different. I was then asked to try the tuba which is was not happy about but I did but my teacher then showed me the bass clarinet it was different but smaller than the tuba and bigger then the flute or trumpet. Passages developed from the first theme then led gradually to its return in its original calm mood after a brief climax. A brief coda was made by a new and happy melody referring to the main theme. The third movement was lighter than any of the other movements. But the middle section referred to the single note motive which was grown as symphony progressed. With the finale the grand returned, peoples were at once concerned with weighty issues. The suspension was highly impressive making peoples feel something great impending. The themes were many and various. But they flowed from one to another smoothly. Then the movement was fully developed as the exuberant conclusion theme came out, fast and furiously. There also followed a series of developments some ingenious and some powerful. Then the movement went into end. The loud horn–proclamation died slowly through sublet changing harmonies, until by a modulation. Then the entire color and atmosphere of the music changed to half–light. The original halting form of the theme recurred briefly but only for a moment. Or the distinguished Wolfgang Mozart, a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era, who composed over 600 works; one of which is Concerto in A–major for Clarinet and Orchestra, k. 622. The first movement: Allegro begins with an orchestral statement of the main theme. Then the theme is repeated by the solo clarinet, creating a more desolate atmosphere. Eventually the music develops into a dramatic turn after a tutti, leading back to the main theme, where the Alberti bass and arpeggios for the solo clarinet are restated, then ending the movement in a relatively more joyful tutti in A major. The second movement: Adagio, written in ternary form ABA, begins with the solo clarinet playing the main theme of the concerto, with the orchestra restating the theme again. Although this movement starts with a tranquil feel, it develops into a more forceful, enthusiastic tone. Finally the third movement Rondo: Allegro has a happier refrain, but occasionally recalling the melancholy mood from the first movement, also creating quiet music, silence, which I felt were a big part of the musical piece. Overall, the Clarinet Concerto is best portrayed in Brian Robins' words "valedictory and autumnal." Symphony No. 4 in D–minor, Op. 120, was originally composed and completed in 1841, but Schumann being unsatisfied with it, heavily revised the symphony and was later published in 1851.
