A Survey Of The New Testament
A Survey of the New Testament The New Testament is defined as "part of the Bible concerned with
the life and teachings of Christ and his earliest followers" (American Century Dictionary 387). The
Son of God comes to Earth to save us from our sins and to teach us a new way of serving the Lord.
Animal sacrifice is done away with because Jesus died for our sins as a perfect sacrifice and his
sacrifice is everlasting. Jesus explained, "for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the
world, but that the world through him might be saved" (John 3.17). This collection consists of
twenty–seven books, in which I will break down into five sections. First are the Gospels of
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the book of Acts, which is commonly classified as a book of
history. Next are the epistles of Paul which are the book of Romans through Philemon, the general
epistles of Hebrews through Jude, and the prophecy book of Revelation. 1. The Gospels The book of
Matthew provides a detailed account of the life of Jesus and establishes that Jesus Christ is "the
Messiah who fulfills the Old Testament prophesies" (Wiersbe 627). The author Matthew is primarily
aiming his writings at the Jews to let them know that he is the savior who is referred to several times
in the Old Testament (Isiah 7:14, 53:5, 53:12). This book is also the longest of the four gospels
having twenty–eight chapters. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels having 16 chapters, but is
equally important as the

Cancer Research Persuasive Essay
Thank you for all you have done for supporting research, training, and other activities related to the
cancer treatment. With this letter of inquiry, we invite you to support our related work in cancer
research. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a nonprofit medical hospital focused on treatment
and research of children's catastrophic illness founded in 1962. We have treated children from the
whole nation and around the world. We served more than 60,000 patients each year. Our patient
families never receive a bill from us because we believe that the only thing a family should worry
about is helping their child live. Treatment invented in St. Jude has pushed the overall survival rate
for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) which is the major childhood cancer disease increased
from 4% in 1962 to 94% today. With the development of medication, majority of childhood ALL
patients could be cured. However, some of children are cured with serious adverse effects, and some
children could not even be cured with current therapy. Why there is such variation among ALL
patients? One possible mechanism underlying the variability in childhood ALL patients' response to
anti–leukemia medications involves gene polymorphisms. Gene polymorphisms partly accounts for
the reason why childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

HA540: Healthcare Operations and Quality Assessment Part One St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital This assignment will be a good review of the following: Choose a company or an industry
in which you have worked or would like to work. It could be a hospital or a physician practice.
Identify all the important stakeholders for the entity. Determine the primary aims/objectives of each
stakeholder. Assess the power of each stakeholder to affect the company's strategic plans, and how it
may apply that power. Explain how the company might respond to the possible actions of each
stakeholder. Recommend tradeoffs that company managers could make to accommodate the
stakeholders in a way that optimizes the company's own performance. I have chosen St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital for this project because I have always thought that this hospital is the
best organization in the healthcare industry. I have visited the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
many times in Lexington, Kentucky, close to where I live, and visited the children and gave them
little gifts. It truly breaks my heart to see the children suffering in the way that they do, but it feels
my heart to see them and play with them and see their little faces light up when they see the treats
that I had brought them. For many of these children and their families, they would not be able to get
the treatment needed if it weren't for St. Jude. They could simply not afford it and St. Jude has been

the coming of Messiah. Mark, is the earliest and shortest story of Jesus life, as it was written about

the Greeks to show Jesus as a universal saviour. John, written between 90 and 100 A.D. and is
written for instruction of the early Christian Church, as it presents Jesus as the eternal Word of God

2nd Peter's In Faithful To The End'
Peter whose name means "Rock" is a true definition of denying self and running into the fire for the
cause of Christ. Simone Peter is the author of 2nd Peter. He wrote this book and was a servant and
Apostle of Jesus Christ. The Epistle of Peter, also known as 2nd Peter was written somewhere
between 64 A.D and 66 AD. Peter believed his death was near and inevitable during the time of his
writings. 2nd Peter is different from 1st epistle that was written. Peters communication was to
strengthen the church in his first letters. His second epistle was dedicated to warning of false
teachers, and those who were in the church as well. It is believed that these writings were written
near the end of Peters life. The intended audience for Peter was Asia Minor. The purpose of 2nd
Peter was to call to Christian growth, condemnation of false teachers, the persecution and sufferings
and having confidence in Christ return. There are similarities between the book of Jude. (Jude 4 – 18
and 2nd Peter 2).
Jude and Peter are so parallel that some have questioned which one was written first. Some scholars
have speculated that Jude borrowed from Peter, or maybe they even used the same source. As we

St. Jude's Research Hospital opened their doors in 1962. Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude's,
decided to repay St. Jude Thaddeus– The Patron Saint of the hopeless causes– by building a hospital
to care for the most helpless of all: children with hopeless diseases. Schools and businesses should
support St. Jude's, because they have raised the survival rates in children's cancer, blood disorders,
syndromes, HIV/AIDS, etc. Also, for every dollar donated eighty–six cents goes to St. Jude's.

he would get better over time. But, she was not convinced, she was later referred to a specialist, who
performed a CT scan. Which, later showed a tumor in Mark's head. "The family received a referral
and arrived at St. Jude in January 2010. At St. Jude, further testing was done and a discovery was
made: Mark's tumor was actually a very rare type of bone cancer, in the Ewing sarcoma family of
tumors– not brain cancer as originally believed" (StJude.org) If it wasn't for St. Jude or the mother
then Mark may not have lived and be over five years cancer free. "It's like a miracle. Everything is
given to the family here for free without any expectation," Rita said.... "I wish every nation in the

Canonical Criteria The purpose of this essay is to discuss and give some explanation and knowledge
of the elements and relevant information as it relates to the Canonical Criteria. The Biblical canon
that we find in Jewish Christian are listed in and throughout the various books in the Bible. They are
recognized as being inspired by God which makes them sacred. They are very profound and valid to
the particular religion or community group of believers as it pertains to their faith and livelihood in
the Kingdom of God. The word canon is derived from the Greek word (kanon) which is define as a
reed. It later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the authenticity has been challenged even rejected by many Biblical critics and
scholars. It would and could be a possibility of proving that the canon were written by apostles. The
second is the orthodoxy. This would go without saying that any canonical book must be orthodox
because God would not permit his word to teach falsehood but only the truth. The positive or
strengths would be that the criterion had to be orthodox or they would be disregard and not worth
and disqualified material by this application of whether or not it was orthodox. The negative or
weakness would be that anything that would violate the orthodox would not be viewed as a
canonical. This was demonstrated in the early church and they did not handle the criterion easily
because of their lack of wanting to acknowledge the Hebrews and the reservation about Revelations
(Nicole, 1997).
The third is the christocentricity which Martin Luther describes as Jesus Christ being the center of
the entire book of the Bible. The positive or strength is that there is truth about Jesus Christ being
the center of the Bible. The negative or weakness is that the principle that was used in the
connection with other criteria such as apostolicity. The fourth is the inspiration because the
canonical books are inspired by God, some authors like Laird Harris feel that is the real criterion to
be implemented. The

Jude 's Death On The Cross Essay
Jude was the younger half–brother of Jesus, born of Mary and Joseph. During the life and ministry
of Jesus Christ, Jude and his other brothers openly expressed doubt in the divinity of Jesus (John
7:3–8), but Jude did eventually became a believer after Jesus' death on the cross (Acts 1:14). The
epistle of Jude is written to a general audience of Christians, "who are called beloved in God the
Father and kept for Jesus Christ" (v. 1). Jude begins by saying that He had planned to write about
common salvation, but there were more pressing matters that he had to attend to. Jude's self–
professed purpose for writing his epistle is to rally his readers to "contend for the faith" against false
teachers who might draw believers away from the truth (v. 3). Jude's method is twofold; he identifies
the false teachers who have infiltrated the church, and he urges the church not to be swayed into
apostasy by their blasphemous teachings.
First and foremost, it is important to accurately determine a timeframe in which Jude was written.
Jude's discussion of the false teachers in verses 4–18 closely resembles 2 Peter 2:1–3:4, and many
scholars argue that Peter's second epistle predates Jude for a number of reasons. The first of these
reasons is Peter's anticipation of false teachers to come (2 Pet. 2:1–2, 3:3), which chronologically
speaking comes before the arrival of the false teachers, which Jude vv. 4, 11–12, 17–18 deals with.
The second piece of evident is found in Jude 1:17–18. Here,

1. Summarize the typical evangelical reconstruction of the circumstances behind the writing of 1
Peter.
The letter attributes the writing to Peter. Similarities in style with Acts and the Gospels seem to
confirm the attribution along with a lack of objections from the early church about authorship. Peter
probably used Silas as an amanuensis, accounting for the Greek style of the letter. The next verse
claims that the letter was written from "Babylon", likely a code name used for Rome. This coincides
with tradition and with Paul's correspondence since, according to 2 Tim. 4:11, Mark went to Rome
in the mid 60's. Thus, Peter is writing from Rome at the beginning of the Neronic persecution before

What is apocalyptic literature and what distinct rules of interpretation apply to it?
The genre of apocalyptic literature is varied but was well known in the first century and can also be
seen in other Christian and Jewish sources such as Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Jesus' "Olivet
Discourse," and portions of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. This type of writing makes extensive use of
symbolism, grotesque and outlandish imagery, and numbers infused with cryptic/symbolic meaning.
It was often written in times of crisis, and can depict past, present, and future events intertwined or
leading to moments of Godly intervention and triumph over evil forces.
Apocalyptic literature ought to be studied and analyzed in light of first–century history. The most
important hermeneutical principle we can follow is, to make sense out of the text as a 1st century
Christian in Asia–minor would have understood it, and not as a modern 21st–century Christians
infusing meaning anachronistically into the text as it is often done. A literal interpretation is almost
always the wrong approach to interpret such

Harris Pastoral Epistles
According to Harris (2015), pseudonymity, is the practice of publishing new work in the name of
either a famous or a deceased author. In so doing, such a name would impart some form of authority
to the writing. For example in the Old Testament, the book of Daniel is considered pseudonymous,
while in the New Testament 2nd Peter and Jude are also considered pseudonymous. Followers of
Paul were also allowed to use his name in any works that they published. Among Hellenistic–Jewish
and early Christian writers, the practice was used to express thoughts and ideas of the teachings of
famous authors as if they were still alive. The aim of pseudonymity was to create praise to an

Education According to Harris (2015), pastoral epistles do not appear in Paul's letters nor do they
talk about his ideas on faith and the Holy Spirit. The church that is discussed in the pastorals is also
very different from the church during Paul's times. Due to these reasons, scholars assume that the
pastorals were authored sometimes after the death of Paul. The Pastoral Epistles main emphasis is
on tradition and how to combat traitors since the church at the time was changing into a much more
organized community. There was also concern by the authors of the epistles regarding the practice of
Hellenistic Judaism, and Moral Law that concerned abstinence fro marriage and food. Reference

Four Gospel Of Barabbas Research Paper
Barabbas: Little is known about Barabbas, apart from the critical role he played in Christ's final
days. His name means "Son of the Father." (Holman 2003) Barabbas was imprisoned about the same
time as Jesus; his crime was robbery. As the Roman's reserved crucifixion for enemies of the state, it
is very likely that he led a concentrated robbery on Roman assets. Whether this is because of a
possible Zealot leaning or simply chasing the fatter goose is a matter of conjecture. What all four
Gospels tell us is that Pontius Pilate offered the people of Jerusalem the chance to set one man
destined for execution free: Barabbas or Christ. The people chose freedom for Barabbas and death

Gethsemane: The garden's name means "olive press." (Holman, 2003) The events that transpired
there have given an entirely new image when one thinks of Gethsemane: one of despair, pain,
betrayal, and fulfillment of prophecy. The garden is where Jesus went after the Last Supper, though
it is likely he often went there. (Holman, 2003) The night of the Last Supper, Jesus went to
Gethsemane and told his disciples to watch as he prayed. Here he prayed so anxiously that Luke
records his tears fell like blood. (Luke 22:44) It was a time of anguish for Jesus, as the divine aspect
of Him knew his time was near, but His mortal aspect feared what was to come. Rightly so, given
that the crucifixion caused Jesus to as if God had forsaken him. (Matthew 27:46) However, this
showed that Christ learned obedience to his Father's wishes even in the face of suffering and
possibly against what he might have chosen. (Hebrews

A Very Brief Look at the New Testament
The New Testament is an anthology of twenty–seven ancient writings that describe the life of Jesus
Christ and the beginning of the Christian Church. This anthology was not written by just one person,
but rather, has several authors, most of whom are known and some of whom are not distinctly
known. All of these writings are believed to have been written in the first and second centuries AD
from roughly 50AD to 125AD(class notes). The New Testament was mainly written in Greek with
some small bits of Aramaic (class notes), but has since been translated into various other languages.
This group of writings has been used as both a theological and historical document, while there are
no clear lines distinguishing the two. It becomes apparent in studying the New Testament that it is a
group of texts discussing Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and the origin and spread of Christianity
while including a heavy influence of the societies of the authors.
The New Testament comes from at least eight different authors who lived during and after the life of
Jesus. Each of the writings, while dealing with Jesus, his teachings or the spread of Christianity, has
a historical undertone. There are clear bits of historical context throughout the anthology that allow
the books to be dated and provide insight to the world of the authors. When the prophetic
destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is being discussed in the gospels, it is clear that the authors
are discussing the threat of the

Gabriel is one of the three angels mentioned by name in the bible. Even though Jewish tradition
identifies Gabriel as one of seven archangels, the Bible does not actually state that Gabriel is an
archangel. Yet Gabriel clearly has a high position among the angels since his name is mentioned in
God's Word along with Lucifer and Michael. The angel Gabriel is mentioned in Daniel 8:16–26 and
9:20–27. Gabriel, "one who looked like a man," interprets Daniel's visions, and Daniel "was terrified
and fell prostrate". Gabriel speaks to Daniel while he is in a deep sleep, and Daniel is tired and sick

Michael is identified with the angel who wrestled with Jacob, destroyed the armies of Sennacherib

St. Jude children's Research Hospital
What is the name of your organization? What year was the agency founded?
I would like to focus on one non–profit organization that has been doing very well in the recent
years. The name of the organization is St Jude Research Hospital, which deals with the cure and
treatment of children suffering from catastrophic diseases. In the five decades, it has been
operational, the mortality rate has gradually reduced therefore saving lots of lives. St Jude started its
operations in 1962. Danny Thomas was the one who started the organization and was helped by two
other close friends (Pui, Pei, Pappo, Howard, Cheng, Sandlund and Gajjar, 2012).
What was the total revenue for the current year?
The total revenue of any firm is calculated by adding the total sales of good and services in a given
period mostly one year as explained by Austin, (2002). According to St Jude children's Research

Faith vs. Works Essay example
The Epistle of James has an enduring message for the entirety of the Church and for each individual
believer. James challenges its readers to live a life pleasing to God. The message of James 2 is vital
for Christians to take root into one's life. In James 2, there are two controversial topics addressed.
James 2 addresses how to live out one's faith by bringing forth action. The previous chapter
addresses a phrase in James 1:22, "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves", which correlates with James Ch. 2:14–26. Being doers of the word and not hearers only
is simply the only suitable response to the word of God. One would not be able to be a doer of the
word if he does not fulfill the royal law of love (James ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads interpreters to believe that the epistle of James was written prior to the events of Acts 15
and before the Jerusalem Council dating the epistle of James in the mid–30's–40 (Hodges 10). If the
epistle of James is dated that early, before the move of the Gospel to the Gentiles, as interpreters we
can grasp the scripture that states the twelve tribes in the dispersion. At the first persecution in Acts
8:1, the Jewish Christians began to scatter which produced Christian diaspora (dispersion). The early
Christians were spread throughout Judea and Samaria from their state in Jerusalem. Another
possibility is that the letter was written even before the evangelization of Samaria. However, it is
likely that the early Christians could have seen the Samaritan converts as returning to the communal
of the twelve tribes which makes up what we call Israel today (Hodges 11). According to Zane
Hodges in The Epistle of James, "The Epistle of James was a pastoral letter written to the dispersed
Jewish believers of Palestine, probably at a time before Paul's initial mission to the Gentile world,
i.e., to Arabia. This would suggest a date closely approximating A.D. 34 or 35." In regard to Zane
Hodges's view, James is the earliest New Testament document that we have. There is little to none
evidence do disprove that James was written at an early date

The Literary Relationship of Jude and 2 Peter
The Letters of Jude and 2 Peter have traditionally been grouped together because they share a direct
literary relationship. However, knowing what letter was based off of the other is very difficult to
understand. Both letters belong to a collection of epistles at the end of the New Testament which are
sometimes referred to as Catholic Epistles. These two epistles both offer practical advice and
reflections on the nature of God, the nature of humanity's relationship to God, and the response of a
community when confronted with false teaching. The purpose of this paper is to detect the
agreements in content or wording between the two letters and discuss whether the letter of Jude was
dependent on 2 Peter as a source or if 2 Peter used Jude as a source. Due to the several agreements
between the two letters, one can be certain that either the author of Jude or 2 Peter used the other as
a source, or both independently used a common source. Reese states that "one of the reasons that
Jude has often been treated alongside the book of 2 Peter has been because the second chapter of 2
Peter and the main body of Jude share remarkable similarities in style, language, argument and
examples. Both books refer to angels who sinned, to Sodom and Gomorrah, and to Balaam" (Reese
14). Both letters also remind the readers that people like the false teachers were expected by the
apostles. Reese also brings it to her readers attention that "although these two epistles are quite short

The Genre Of Ephesians 2 : 1-10
The genre of Ephesians 2:1–10 is an Epistle. The Epistles were letters teaching specific churches or
groups of people; often inspired by God. They are split into two categories: Pauline Epistles, written
by Paul and traditionally Paul was the first word of the book in Greek, and General Epistles, often
referred to as the Catholic epistles and were written to the universal Church. The Pauline Epistles
consist of: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2
Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. The General Epistles consist of: Hebrews,
James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2 and 3 John, and Jude. The interpretive principles of this genre are that it is
meant to be read as a whole and in one sitting in order to get the main idea of the passage, one must
view the paragraphs as the main unit of thought in the passage, one must know the structure to
understand the letter, and one must do background reading to fully comprehend the main concept
and the history and culture of the setting. Author & Purpose The author of this passage is Paul. Paul
was one of the Apostles who spent most of his ministry in prison where most of his letters were
written. He was specifically residing in Roman prison while writing Ephesians (61 A.D). Paul was
often persecuted during this time period even before he himself believed. In Acts, Paul travels from
Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission where Jesus appears to him. This inspires him to preach about

St. Jude Children's Hospital: A Case Study
St.Jude Children's Hospital is a childhood cancer prevention organization that has made a
tremendous impact in the fight against childhood cancer all around the world. The founder of
St.Jude is Danny Thomas, a famous entertainer. During hard times in his life and with a daughter on

After years of being an entertainer he stuck to that promise and built St.Jude Children's Hospital in
Memphis, Tennessee located at "262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105–3678". Danny built
St.Jude because he stuck to his prayer and began talking to a group of businessmen who helped him
raise money and helped began building St.Jude (St.Jude began on February 4, 1962). St.Jude's
mission statement is "advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases
through research and treatments". They constantly vision that no child is denied based on race,
religion, or a family's ability to pay. St. Jude helps children with cancer or any other catastrophic
diseases. Someone that St. Jude has helped is a little girl named Lily she was diagnosed with

The Canon
The Formation of the Canon, 5–6 page paper. Thus far we have come to a closing about the date and
source of the individual books of the New Testament, but another questions remains unanswered.
We can ask ourselves, how did the New Testament itself come into being? Who collected the
writings and on what ideology? What conditions led to the creations of a canon, of trustworthy
books? Throughout history Christian's belief is that the Holy Spirit, who controlled the writing of
the individual books, also controlled their selection and compilation, thus continuing to fulfill our
Lord's promise that He would guide his disciples into all reality. This however, is something that is
to be discerned by spiritual insight, and not by historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If any man obeyed not our word by this epistle, "says Paul to one church (II Thessalonians 3: 14),
"note that man, that ye have company with him." To another he makes it the test of a Spirit–led man
to recognize that what he was writing to them was "the commandments of the Lord" (Cor 14:37).
Inevitably, such writing were received by the infant churches as of quality equal to that of the old
"Bible"; placed alongside of it older books as an additional part of the one law of God; and read as
such in their meetings for worship a practice which moreover was required by the apostles (I
Thessalonians v. 27; col. 4:16; Rev. 1:3). In apprehension, therefore, of the earliest churches, the
"Scriptures" were not a closed but an increasing "canon." Such they had been from the beginning, as
they gradually grew in number from Moses to Malachi; and such they were to continue as long as
there should remain among the churches "men of God who spoke as they were moved by the Holy
Ghost." We read of the first Christian text that did not become canonized but was respected as
authentic is the first epistle of Clement of Rome, reasonably dated to 95 A.D. (M 40), and contained
in many ancient Bibles and frequently read and regarded as scripture in many churches (M 187–8).
This is relevant because even at this late date two things are observed: Clement never refers to any

What Are The Four Books Of The New Testament
Books of the New Testament
The Bible is made complete by the New Testament because many things that were prophesied in the
Old Testament manifest in it. Some Bible scholars say that the Old Testament conceals the New
Testament that then reveals the Old Testament. Out of 66 books that make up the entire Holy Bible,
27 are of the New Testament. The 27 books can be classified according to authorship, target group
and time in history in the Christian calendar.
The first four books of the New Testament are called 'Gospels' and are named after their writers who
lived with Jesus. These books give details on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. The life of Jesus is often declared as the Good News to the world. Good News because

Summary Of Jude 's ' The ' Of Jude '
JOURNAL OF JUDE
BY: ROSECEL M. RENDON 1. EPISTLE'S AUTHORSHIP
Jude was the brother of Jesus and he wrote this epistle after he became a believer in Jesus Christ. We
need to remember as it is written, Jude and James, both brothers of Jesus, did not believe that He
was the Messiah, the son of God. But after His resurrection everything changed and now he called
himself "a brother of James and a servant of Jesus Christ" which shows the humility of Jude and the
unimportance for him to be the half–brother of Jesus in human terms but most important to believe
in Him as our savior and king. To Jude, the blood of the cross was more important than the family
blood.
2. DATE OF WRITING
The Epistle of Jude is closely related to 2 Peter, and the date of writing depends on whether Jude
borrowed from 2 Peter or 2 Peter borrowed from Jude. It is believed it was written somewhere
between the years 60 to 80 A.D.
3. PURPOSE AND OCCASION OF WRITING: Jude had to deal with the dangers of false doctrines
sneaking in the church. There were godless men, false teachers who were living sinful lives and
misrepresenting the grace of God, they denied the Lordship of Jesus Christ and began teaching
doctrines of self–righteousness and a false freedom they represented. This brought Jude, led by the
Holy Spirit, to deal strongly with these men, false teachers. In his epistle, he perfectly describes the
character, deception, lies, and modus–operandi of these men and contrast it with the character of a

Even early church writers contested the validity of what Luther referred to as an "epistle of straw",
even denigrating it as a leftover from Judaic writers. Even recent commentary writer Sophie Laws
referred to "the epistle of James is an oddity. It lacks almost all of what might be thought to be the
distinctive marks of Christian faith and practice." The Luther casts further doubt on the authenticity
of this epistle. The target audience for the book of James is the early practitioners of Christianity or
the early church, in particular, those persecuted for their faith and scattered in the Diaspora are of
particular importance in James. Non–believers are not addressed in this passage. James forcefully
corrects what he perceives to be a misunderstanding concerning the cooperative relationship
between faith and works. The Gospels and other epistles are directed at informing those who have
not yet heard the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. "For it is by grace you have
been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that
no one can boast (Eph. 2:8–9)." Commentator Kent Hughes helpfully points out that "Paul's
teaching about faith and works focuses on the time before conversion, and James's focus is after
conversion" Some critics believe that there is a conflict between Paul's views in

All of Paul's epistles speak to God's grace, but in these pastoral letters, Bruce views the main
contribution to be the church as a firm foundation on which God stands, a church not merely as "an
institution for the dispensing of the means of grace," (44) but a church as a community instructed,
practiced, organized and administered as it grows as a "community of ordinary men and women:
who have the saving grace of Christ in common and await Jesus' return. In chapter five of his book,
Bruce turns to Luke's writings in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the apostles where Luke
declares Christianity as a faith for the whole world, not just the Jews who pressured the Roman
government to execute Jesus. The Gospel of Luke, itself is the gospel to the underprivileged. In
defending the faith and Jesus' place in it, Luke presents accounts of Stephen and Paul as a part of his
history with Stephen's account launching the Gentile mission (53) and Paul underscoring this
mission as the major theological theme of Luke when he voices near the end of his history in Acts
28:28 "Let it be known to you then that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will
listen." In fact, though some Romans found it difficult to accept the lordship of Jesus because he
was convicted and executed on a charge of sedition against Rome, Luke begins with an emphasis of
the Gentile mission by recounting Simeon of

Early Christian Traditions
The history of the New Testament canon is even more colorful. During the first few hundred years
of the early Christian era, there was no official canon that the entire Christian world recognized. The
Eastern and Western church traditions each used a differing list of books as scripture. Before 200
a.d., the Church fathers did not even mention Philemon, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Jude. The status
of these books was murky at best until after 400 a.d..
On the other hand, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Apocalypse of Peter, the Shepherd of Hermas, the
Didache, the Acts of Paul and the First Letter of Clement were considered by many Church fathers
to be part of the early Christian scriptures.

Irenaeus, reacting to Marcion, tried to establish his own canon. Since there were a number of
gospels at that time, he decided that there should only be four "because there are only four winds
and four corners of the earth." Other Church fathers who followed Irenaeus accepted his decision.
Eusebius of Caesarea (260–339 a.d.) listed four categories of books.
1. The recognized books (the four gospels, Acts, fourteen letters of Paul, 1 Peter, 1 John, Revelation
[?]).
2. The disputed books (James, 2 Peter, 2, 3 John, and Jude). Paul's authorship of Hebrews is
questioned by many modern Biblical scholars, in spite the fact that Clement of Rome (quoted by
Eusebius) said that "the epistle to the Hebrews is Paul's." Hebrews is theologically and conceptually
connected with Paul while the same time, the grammar and vocabulary are quite different from
Paul's other books.
3. The spurious books (Acts of Paul, Shepherd of Hermas, Apocalypse of Peter, Epistle of Barnabas,
Didache, Gospel of Hebrews, Revelation [?]).
4. The heretical forgeries.
Eusebius accepted 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and the letter to Hebrews. In fact, he was the first to
declare Hebrews legitimate. There are two possible options that explain this historic

The Canon of the New Testament
What we know today as the New Testament was compiled over a period of many decades. It was
first referenced as the "New Testament" by Clement of Alexandria. It is believed that the books that
comprise what we know as the New Testament canon were in existence no later than the end of the
first century. The included books varied by different sources until the fourth century when the
Bishop of Alexandria, Athanasios, included them in a letter to his flock in AD 367. His list was
approved by councils at Hippo in AD393 and Carthage in AD397. The process used to arrive at this
list varied by time and source. There were many debates along the way and some continue to this
day.

One of the top apologists of the time was Irenaeus. He declared that there could only be four gospels
and to add or subtract from that number would be heresy. He also countered Marcion who that the
"Old Testament God had been evil, different from the New Testament God." Marcion wanted to
remove all ties to Judaism from Christianity and only accepted Luke and ten of Paul's letters in his
canon. Irenaeus responded by emphasizing the authority of all four Gospels and all thirteen of Paul's
letters. Marcion's canon was followed by other varying canons over the next two centuries. One list
which was very close to our current canon was the Muraturian Canon. It appears to include the four
Gospels, Acts, I and II Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Galatians, I and II
Thessalonians, Romans, Philemon, Titus, I and II Timothy, all three epistles of John, and
Revelations. It directly rejected the epistles of Paul to the Laodiceans and the Alexandrians, and
questioned strongly the Revelation of Peter. The first list that clearly defined the 27 books that we
know today as the New Testament was contained in a letter written by Athanasius, the bishop of
Rome, in AD 367. In it he declares these books "God inspired Scripture...handed down to our fathers
by those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning." About this same
time the oldest complete copy of the New Testament, the Codex Sinaiticus, was

The final eight epistles of the New Testament canon exert an influence out of proportion to their
length. They complement the thirteen Pauline Epistles by offering varying perspectives on the
richness of Christian truth. Each of the five authors – James, Peter, John, Jude, and the author of
Hebrews – made a distinctive contribution from his own point of view. Like the four harmonizing
approaches to the life of Christ portrayed in the Gospels, these writers provide a sweeping portrait of
the Christian life as a whole and how it should be lived out. Although Paul's epistles are excellent,

In defending his point against those that deny that the gospel written by inspiration of God, Berkhof
flagrantly proclaims, "Over against this position we hold that the Gospels were written by men who
were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that they are therefore absolutely trustworthy and authoritative
accounts of the life of our Lord." To defend his position Berkhof list but a few passages from
scriptures that support his position. As for those that admit the inspiration of the Old Testament
Prophets, but deny that the Apostles were inspired because they did not use the expression "Thus
Saith the Lord" or did not observe the characteristic phenomena that accompanied the inspiration of
the prophets, Berkhof gives three points in distinguishing the inspiration of the prophets from the
inspiration of the Apostles. o In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit took possession of the Prophets
sometime suppressing their personality, while in the New Testament the Holy Spirit aboded in the
Church and first the Apostle using them as instruments to produce His revelation. o For the Old
Testament Prophets the Holy Spirit was an external Power that impelled them to prophesy. While

The section tiled "Destination" is where it is found. Modern scholars argue several theories as to

Of these, James the half–brother is the most likely candidate. Some scholars might prefer James the
son of Zebedee but his early martyrdom likely negates this possibility because in Acts 12:2 his death
is indicated to have occurred around A.D. 44.6
Literary Context The book of James is not very tidy when it comes to fitting into any of the other
genres of literature. Some consider it to more of a circular rather than an epistle and it is quite
possible that both Paul and Peter had read the Epistle of James, at least there are several
coincidences between them.7 Because it was written to such a broad audience and because it
contains many references to the Old Testament, James hardly fits into any category very neatly.
Therefore, it may be best to see James as a literary circular since it does not address any particular
needs at a given moment. James was apparently teaching the victims of the Diaspora.
The structure of the Book of James begins as a letter and later vacillates between topics, at times
appearing to be more of a sermon addressed to those in the congregation of Jewish Christians.
Considered by some to be wisdom literature, James introduces and argues for several topics and
themes. In James 2:16–26, the themes of faith, good works, and proper treatment of the poor. At
times the structure of James resembles blocks of teaching and exhortation. Luther even accused the

Similarities Of Two Peter And Jude
The similarities of 2 Peter and Jude might appear to be a strenuous task to some who have never
been engaged in reading the two writings. My essay will attempt to show the similarities that are in
these two writings which seem to have been scribed at the same time or around the same time. Most
similarities, of which are namely: the dates of the scribing of the two Epistles, the false doctrines of
the false teachers that had come into the church, the same thoughts and expressions of their work,
whether the writings are apostolic or not, and what hardships the churches or the two audiences
were facing. The Epistle of Jude has been said to be inscribed very late, but it might not have been
inscribed after A.D. 70, which was the destruction of Jerusalem. Perceiving that if it had been so that
Jude's Epistle was written after the destruction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book of Enoch is possibly one of the oldest books, for it is said, "Enoch walked with God".
Enoch is also said to have preached to many, even angels! Nevertheless, even if Jude quoted from
Enoch's writings, he was just as the Paul who quoted from the verses of the Old Testament, and to
Peter who referred to some of the Epistles of Paul. Even if there so many similar scriptures found in
Jude and 2 Peter, it is just the Holy Spirit in both men. According to the style of writing of the two
apostles, it seems the churches or their audiences were going through the same hardships. As
mentioned above, they all had problems with false teachers, and Peter states that some would fall
away into accepting the doctrines of these men, and follow the pernicious ways of these men (2
Peter 2:2) . So, there is a possibility that their audiences were all facing the same difficulties and
hardships. It might have been that the two audiences needed the same encouragements, reproof,
warnings, correction, and

A Survey Of The New Testament

  • 1. A Survey Of The New Testament A Survey of the New Testament The New Testament is defined as "part of the Bible concerned with the life and teachings of Christ and his earliest followers" (American Century Dictionary 387). The Son of God comes to Earth to save us from our sins and to teach us a new way of serving the Lord. Animal sacrifice is done away with because Jesus died for our sins as a perfect sacrifice and his sacrifice is everlasting. Jesus explained, "for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved" (John 3.17). This collection consists of twenty–seven books, in which I will break down into five sections. First are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the book of Acts, which is commonly classified as a book of history. Next are the epistles of Paul which are the book of Romans through Philemon, the general epistles of Hebrews through Jude, and the prophecy book of Revelation. 1. The Gospels The book of Matthew provides a detailed account of the life of Jesus and establishes that Jesus Christ is "the Messiah who fulfills the Old Testament prophesies" (Wiersbe 627). The author Matthew is primarily aiming his writings at the Jews to let them know that he is the savior who is referred to several times in the Old Testament (Isiah 7:14, 53:5, 53:12). This book is also the longest of the four gospels having twenty–eight chapters. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels having 16 chapters, but is equally important as the ... • 3. Cancer Research Persuasive Essay Thank you for all you have done for supporting research, training, and other activities related to the cancer treatment. With this letter of inquiry, we invite you to support our related work in cancer research. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a nonprofit medical hospital focused on treatment and research of children's catastrophic illness founded in 1962. We have treated children from the whole nation and around the world. We served more than 60,000 patients each year. Our patient families never receive a bill from us because we believe that the only thing a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatment invented in St. Jude has pushed the overall survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) which is the major childhood cancer disease increased from 4% in 1962 to 94% today. With the development of medication, majority of childhood ALL patients could be cured. However, some of children are cured with serious adverse effects, and some children could not even be cured with current therapy. Why there is such variation among ALL patients? One possible mechanism underlying the variability in childhood ALL patients' response to anti–leukemia medications involves gene polymorphisms. Gene polymorphisms partly accounts for the reason why childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... HA540: Healthcare Operations and Quality Assessment Part One St. Jude Children's Research Hospital This assignment will be a good review of the following: Choose a company or an industry in which you have worked or would like to work. It could be a hospital or a physician practice. Identify all the important stakeholders for the entity. Determine the primary aims/objectives of each stakeholder. Assess the power of each stakeholder to affect the company's strategic plans, and how it may apply that power. Explain how the company might respond to the possible actions of each stakeholder. Recommend tradeoffs that company managers could make to accommodate the stakeholders in a way that optimizes the company's own performance. I have chosen St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for this project because I have always thought that this hospital is the best organization in the healthcare industry. I have visited the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital many times in Lexington, Kentucky, close to where I live, and visited the children and gave them little gifts. It truly breaks my heart to see the children suffering in the way that they do, but it feels my heart to see them and play with them and see their little faces light up when they see the treats that I had brought them. For many of these children and their families, they would not be able to get the treatment needed if it weren't for St. Jude. They could simply not afford it and St. Jude has been ... • 15. St. Jude's Research Proposal St. Jude's Research Hospital opened their doors in 1962. Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude's, decided to repay St. Jude Thaddeus– The Patron Saint of the hopeless causes– by building a hospital to care for the most helpless of all: children with hopeless diseases. Schools and businesses should support St. Jude's, because they have raised the survival rates in children's cancer, blood disorders, syndromes, HIV/AIDS, etc. Also, for every dollar donated eighty–six cents goes to St. Jude's. Before, St. Jude's Research Hospital opened Danny Thomas was working as an actor. Thomas, spent from 1957 to 1962 saving and fundraising to open the hospital of his dream. • 17. canonical criteria Essay Canonical Criteria Patricia A. Hargrove Grand Canyon University: BIB 502 October 15, 2014 Dr. Don Done Canonical Criteria The purpose of this essay is to discuss and give some explanation and knowledge of the elements and relevant information as it relates to the Canonical Criteria. The Biblical canon that we find in Jewish Christian are listed in and throughout the various books in the Bible. They are recognized as being inspired by God which makes them sacred. They are very profound and valid to the particular religion or community group of believers as it pertains to their faith and livelihood in the Kingdom of God. Even though the authenticity has been challenged even rejected by many Biblical critics and scholars. It would and could be a possibility of proving that the canon were written by apostles. The second is the orthodoxy. This would go without saying that any canonical book must be orthodox because God would not permit his word to teach falsehood but only the truth. The positive or strengths would be that the criterion had to be orthodox or they would be disregard and not worth and disqualified material by this application of whether or not it was orthodox. The negative or weakness would be that anything that would violate the orthodox would not be viewed as a canonical. This was demonstrated in the early church and they did not handle the criterion easily because of their lack of wanting to acknowledge the Hebrews and the reservation about Revelations (Nicole, 1997). The third is the christocentricity which Martin Luther describes as Jesus Christ being the center of the entire book of the Bible. The positive or strength is that there is truth about Jesus Christ being the center of the Bible. The negative or weakness is that the principle that was used in the connection with other criteria such as apostolicity. The fourth is the inspiration because the canonical books are inspired by God, some authors like Laird Harris feel that is the real criterion to be implemented. The ... • 21. Jude 's Death On The Cross Essay Jude was the younger half–brother of Jesus, born of Mary and Joseph. During the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, Jude and his other brothers openly expressed doubt in the divinity of Jesus (John 7:3–8), but Jude did eventually became a believer after Jesus' death on the cross (Acts 1:14). The epistle of Jude is written to a general audience of Christians, "who are called beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ" (v. 1). Jude begins by saying that He had planned to write about common salvation, but there were more pressing matters that he had to attend to. Jude's self– professed purpose for writing his epistle is to rally his readers to "contend for the faith" against false teachers who might draw believers away from the truth (v. 3). Jude's method is twofold; he identifies the false teachers who have infiltrated the church, and he urges the church not to be swayed into apostasy by their blasphemous teachings. First and foremost, it is important to accurately determine a timeframe in which Jude was written. Jude's discussion of the false teachers in verses 4–18 closely resembles 2 Peter 2:1–3:4, and many scholars argue that Peter's second epistle predates Jude for a number of reasons. The first of these reasons is Peter's anticipation of false teachers to come (2 Pet. 2:1–2, 3:3), which chronologically speaking comes before the arrival of the false teachers, which Jude vv. 4, 11–12, 17–18 deals with. The second piece of evident is found in Jude 1:17–18. Here, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The letter attributes the writing to Peter. Similarities in style with Acts and the Gospels seem to confirm the attribution along with a lack of objections from the early church about authorship. Peter probably used Silas as an amanuensis, accounting for the Greek style of the letter. The next verse claims that the letter was written from "Babylon", likely a code name used for Rome. This coincides with tradition and with Paul's correspondence since, according to 2 Tim. 4:11, Mark went to Rome in the mid 60's. What is apocalyptic literature and what distinct rules of interpretation apply to it? The genre of apocalyptic literature is varied but was well known in the first century and can also be seen in other Christian and Jewish sources such as Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Jesus' "Olivet Discourse," and portions of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. This type of writing makes extensive use of symbolism, grotesque and outlandish imagery, and numbers infused with cryptic/symbolic meaning. It was often written in times of crisis, and can depict past, present, and future events intertwined or leading to moments of Godly intervention and triumph over evil forces. Apocalyptic literature ought to be studied and analyzed in light of first–century history. The most important hermeneutical principle we can follow is, to make sense out of the text as a 1st century Christian in Asia–minor would have understood it, and not as a modern 21st–century Christians infusing meaning anachronistically into the text as it is often done. • 25. Harris Pastoral Epistles According to Harris (2015), pseudonymity, is the practice of publishing new work in the name of either a famous or a deceased author. In so doing, such a name would impart some form of authority to the writing. For example in the Old Testament, the book of Daniel is considered pseudonymous, while in the New Testament 2nd Peter and Jude are also considered pseudonymous. Followers of Paul were also allowed to use his name in any works that they published. Among Hellenistic–Jewish and early Christian writers, the practice was used to express thoughts and ideas of the teachings of famous authors as if they were still alive. The church that is discussed in the pastorals is also very different from the church during Paul's times. Due to these reasons, scholars assume that the pastorals were authored sometimes after the death of Paul. The Pastoral Epistles main emphasis is on tradition and how to combat traitors since the church at the time was changing into a much more organized community. (Holman 2003) Barabbas was imprisoned about the same time as Jesus; his crime was robbery. As the Roman's reserved crucifixion for enemies of the state, it is very likely that he led a concentrated robbery on Roman assets. Whether this is because of a possible Zealot leaning or simply chasing the fatter goose is a matter of conjecture. • 34. A Very Brief Look at the New Testament The New Testament is an anthology of twenty–seven ancient writings that describe the life of Jesus Christ and the beginning of the Christian Church. This anthology was not written by just one person, but rather, has several authors, most of whom are known and some of whom are not distinctly known. All of these writings are believed to have been written in the first and second centuries AD from roughly 50AD to 125AD(class notes). The New Testament was mainly written in Greek with some small bits of Aramaic (class notes), but has since been translated into various other languages. This group of writings has been used as both a theological and historical document, while there are no clear lines distinguishing the two. It becomes apparent in studying the New Testament that it is a group of texts discussing Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and the origin and spread of Christianity while including a heavy influence of the societies of the authors. The New Testament comes from at least eight different authors who lived during and after the life of Jesus. Each of the writings, while dealing with Jesus, his teachings or the spread of Christianity, has a historical undertone. There are clear bits of historical context throughout the anthology that allow the books to be dated and provide insight to the world of the authors. When the prophetic destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is being discussed in the gospels, it is clear that the authors are discussing the threat of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

James challenges its readers to live a life pleasing to God. The message of James 2 is vital for Christians to take root into one's life. In James 2, there are two controversial topics addressed. James 2 addresses how to live out one's faith by bringing forth action. The previous chapter addresses a phrase in James 1:22, "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves", which correlates with James Ch. 2:14–26. Being doers of the word and not hearers only is simply the only suitable response to the word of God. This leads interpreters to believe that the epistle of James was written prior to the events of Acts 15 and before the Jerusalem Council dating the epistle of James in the mid–30's–40 (Hodges 10). If the epistle of James is dated that early, before the move of the Gospel to the Gentiles, as interpreters we can grasp the scripture that states the twelve tribes in the dispersion. At the first persecution in Acts 8:1, the Jewish Christians began to scatter which produced Christian diaspora (dispersion). The early Christians were spread throughout Judea and Samaria from their state in Jerusalem. Another possibility is that the letter was written even before the evangelization of Samaria. However, it is likely that the early Christians could have seen the Samaritan converts as returning to the communal of the twelve tribes which makes up what we call Israel today (Hodges 11). According to Zane Hodges in The Epistle of James, "The Epistle of James was a pastoral letter written to the dispersed Jewish believers of Palestine, probably at a time before Paul's initial mission to the Gentile world, i.e., to Arabia. This would suggest a date closely approximating A.D. 34 or 35." In regard to Zane Hodges's view, James is the earliest New Testament document that we have. • 42. The Literary Relationship of Jude and 2 Peter The Letters of Jude and 2 Peter have traditionally been grouped together because they share a direct literary relationship. However, knowing what letter was based off of the other is very difficult to understand. Both letters belong to a collection of epistles at the end of the New Testament which are sometimes referred to as Catholic Epistles. These two epistles both offer practical advice and reflections on the nature of God, the nature of humanity's relationship to God, and the response of a community when confronted with false teaching. The purpose of this paper is to detect the agreements in content or wording between the two letters and discuss whether the letter of Jude was dependent on 2 Peter as a source or if 2 Peter used Jude as a source. Due to the several agreements between the two letters, one can be certain that either the author of Jude or 2 Peter used the other as a source, or both independently used a common source. Reese states that "one of the reasons that Jude has often been treated alongside the book of 2 Peter has been because the second chapter of 2 Peter and the main body of Jude share remarkable similarities in style, language, argument and examples. Both books refer to angels who sinned, to Sodom and Gomorrah, and to Balaam" (Reese 14). Both letters also remind the readers that people like the false teachers were expected by the apostles. • 44. The Genre Of Ephesians 2 : 1-10 The genre of Ephesians 2:1–10 is an Epistle. The Epistles were letters teaching specific churches or groups of people; often inspired by God. They are split into two categories: Pauline Epistles, written by Paul and traditionally Paul was the first word of the book in Greek, and General Epistles, often referred to as the Catholic epistles and were written to the universal Church. The Pauline Epistles consist of: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. The General Epistles consist of: Hebrews, James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2 and 3 John, and Jude. The interpretive principles of this genre are that it is meant to be read as a whole and in one sitting in order to get the main idea of the passage, one must view the paragraphs as the main unit of thought in the passage, one must know the structure to understand the letter, and one must do background reading to fully comprehend the main concept and the history and culture of the setting. Author & Purpose The author of this passage is Paul. Paul was one of the Apostles who spent most of his ministry in prison where most of his letters were written. He was specifically residing in Roman prison while writing Ephesians (61 A.D). Paul was often persecuted during this time period even before he himself believed. Thus far we have come to a closing about the date and source of the individual books of the New Testament, but another questions remains unanswered. We can ask ourselves, how did the New Testament itself come into being? Who collected the writings and on what ideology? What conditions led to the creations of a canon, of trustworthy books? Throughout history Christian's belief is that the Holy Spirit, who controlled the writing of the individual books, also controlled their selection and compilation, thus continuing to fulfill our Lord's promise that He would guide his disciples into all reality. If any man obeyed not our word by this epistle, "says Paul to one church (II Thessalonians 3: 14), "note that man, that ye have company with him." To another he makes it the test of a Spirit–led man to recognize that what he was writing to them was "the commandments of the Lord" (Cor 14:37). Inevitably, such writing were received by the infant churches as of quality equal to that of the old "Bible"; placed alongside of it older books as an additional part of the one law of God; and read as such in their meetings for worship a practice which moreover was required by the apostles (I Thessalonians v. 27; col. 4:16; Rev. 1:3). In apprehension, therefore, of the earliest churches, the "Scriptures" were not a closed but an increasing "canon." Such they had been from the beginning, as they gradually grew in number from Moses to Malachi; and such they were to continue as long as there should remain among the churches "men of God who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." • 54. What Are The Four Books Of The New Testament Books of the New Testament The Bible is made complete by the New Testament because many things that were prophesied in the Old Testament manifest in it. Some Bible scholars say that the Old Testament conceals the New Testament that then reveals the Old Testament. Out of 66 books that make up the entire Holy Bible, 27 are of the New Testament. The 27 books can be classified according to authorship, target group and time in history in the Christian calendar. The first four books of the New Testament are called 'Gospels' and are named after their writers who lived with Jesus. These books give details on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The life of Jesus is often declared as the Good News to the world. Good News because ... • 56. Summary Of Jude 's ' The ' Of Jude ' JOURNAL OF JUDE BY: ROSECEL M. RENDON 1. EPISTLE'S AUTHORSHIP Jude was the brother of Jesus and he wrote this epistle after he became a believer in Jesus Christ. We need to remember as it is written, Jude and James, both brothers of Jesus, did not believe that He was the Messiah, the son of God. But after His resurrection everything changed and now he called himself "a brother of James and a servant of Jesus Christ" which shows the humility of Jude and the unimportance for him to be the half–brother of Jesus in human terms but most important to believe in Him as our savior and king. To Jude, the blood of the cross was more important than the family blood. 2. DATE OF WRITING The Epistle of Jude is closely related to 2 Peter, and the date of writing depends on whether Jude borrowed from 2 Peter or 2 Peter borrowed from Jude. It is believed it was written somewhere between the years 60 to 80 A.D. 3. PURPOSE AND OCCASION OF WRITING: Jude had to deal with the dangers of false doctrines sneaking in the church. There were godless men, false teachers who were living sinful lives and misrepresenting the grace of God, they denied the Lordship of Jesus Christ and began teaching doctrines of self–righteousness and a false freedom they represented. This brought Jude, led by the Holy Spirit, to deal strongly with these men, false teachers. In his epistle, he perfectly describes the character, deception, lies, and modus–operandi of these men and contrast it with the character of a true ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even early church writers contested the validity of what Luther referred to as an "epistle of straw", even denigrating it as a leftover from Judaic writers. Even recent commentary writer Sophie Laws referred to "the epistle of James is an oddity. It lacks almost all of what might be thought to be the distinctive marks of Christian faith and practice." The Luther casts further doubt on the authenticity of this epistle. The target audience for the book of James is the early practitioners of Christianity or the early church, in particular, those persecuted for their faith and scattered in the Diaspora are of particular importance in James. Non–believers are not addressed in this passage. James forcefully corrects what he perceives to be a misunderstanding concerning the cooperative relationship between faith and works. The Gospels and other epistles are directed at informing those who have not yet heard the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast (Eph. 2:8–9)." Commentator Kent Hughes helpfully points out that "Paul's teaching about faith and works focuses on the time before conversion, and James's focus is after conversion" Some critics believe that there is a conflict between Paul's views in

  • 64. Early Christian Traditions The history of the New Testament canon is even more colorful. During the first few hundred years of the early Christian era, there was no official canon that the entire Christian world recognized. The Eastern and Western church traditions each used a differing list of books as scripture. Before 200 a.d., the Church fathers did not even mention Philemon, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Jude. The status of these books was murky at best until after 400 a.d.. On the other hand, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Apocalypse of Peter, the Shepherd of Hermas, the Didache, the Acts of Paul and the First Letter of Clement were considered by many Church fathers to be part of the early Christian scriptures. Early Christian Works Sometimes Considered Canonical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Irenaeus, reacting to Marcion, tried to establish his own canon. Since there were a number of gospels at that time, he decided that there should only be four "because there are only four winds and four corners of the earth." Other Church fathers who followed Irenaeus accepted his decision. Eusebius of Caesarea (260–339 a.d.) listed four categories of books. 1. The recognized books (the four gospels, Acts, fourteen letters of Paul, 1 Peter, 1 John, Revelation [?]). 2. The disputed books (James, 2 Peter, 2, 3 John, and Jude). Paul's authorship of Hebrews is questioned by many modern Biblical scholars, in spite the fact that Clement of Rome (quoted by Eusebius) said that "the epistle to the Hebrews is Paul's." Hebrews is theologically and conceptually connected with Paul while the same time, the grammar and vocabulary are quite different from Paul's other books. 3. The spurious books (Acts of Paul, Shepherd of Hermas, Apocalypse of Peter, Epistle of Barnabas, Didache, Gospel of Hebrews, Revelation [?]). 4. The heretical forgeries. Eusebius accepted 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and the letter to Hebrews. In fact, he was the first to declare Hebrews legitimate. There are two possible options that explain this historic ... It is believed that the books that comprise what we know as the New Testament canon were in existence no later than the end of the first century. The included books varied by different sources until the fourth century when the Bishop of Alexandria, Athanasios, included them in a letter to his flock in AD 367. His list was approved by councils at Hippo in AD393 and Carthage in AD397. The process used to arrive at this list varied by time and source. One of the top apologists of the time was Irenaeus. He declared that there could only be four gospels and to add or subtract from that number would be heresy. He also countered Marcion who that the "Old Testament God had been evil, different from the New Testament God." Marcion wanted to remove all ties to Judaism from Christianity and only accepted Luke and ten of Paul's letters in his canon. Irenaeus responded by emphasizing the authority of all four Gospels and all thirteen of Paul's letters. Marcion's canon was followed by other varying canons over the next two centuries. One list which was very close to our current canon was the Muraturian Canon. It appears to include the four Gospels, Acts, I and II Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Galatians, I and II Thessalonians, Romans, Philemon, Titus, I and II Timothy, all three epistles of John, and Revelations. It directly rejected the epistles of Paul to the Laodiceans and the Alexandrians, and questioned strongly the Revelation of Peter. The first list that clearly defined the 27 books that we know today as the New Testament was contained in a letter written by Athanasius, the bishop of Rome, in AD 367. They complement the thirteen Pauline Epistles by offering varying perspectives on the richness of Christian truth. Each of the five authors – James, Peter, John, Jude, and the author of Hebrews – made a distinctive contribution from his own point of view. Like the four harmonizing approaches to the life of Christ portrayed in the Gospels, these writers provide a sweeping portrait of the Christian life as a whole and how it should be lived out. To defend his position Berkhof list but a few passages from scriptures that support his position. As for those that admit the inspiration of the Old Testament Prophets, but deny that the Apostles were inspired because they did not use the expression "Thus Saith the Lord" or did not observe the characteristic phenomena that accompanied the inspiration of the prophets, Berkhof gives three points in distinguishing the inspiration of the prophets from the inspiration of the Apostles. o In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit took possession of the Prophets sometime suppressing their personality, while in the New Testament the Holy Spirit aboded in the Church and first the Apostle using them as instruments to produce His revelation. o For the Old Testament Prophets the Holy Spirit was an external Power that impelled them to prophesy. Most similarities, of which are namely: the dates of the scribing of the two Epistles, the false doctrines of the false teachers that had come into the church, the same thoughts and expressions of their work, whether the writings are apostolic or not, and what hardships the churches or the two audiences were facing.
