Young Yeats Research Paper
Young Yeats spent much of his childhood in Sligo, Ireland. It was in Sligo where his earliest visions
began to form. Through the Pollexfen's, William was able to experience life on the water, as his
grandfather owned a fleet of ships and the Sligo Steam Navigation Company. As the grandson of
this sea merchant, the sailors onboard the fleets, as well as the servants back at home, would all treat
young William like royalty. The Pollexfen's world was complete with yachts and summer homes.
Despite separation from his father for much of his youth, William was without want. He was free to
wander about to discover the beauties, and explore the myths and legends of this enchanted place.
William would miss Sligo immensely when this family would move ... Show more content on

Ireland lost over two million people either due to starvation, disease, or emigration to England and
America. The Irish grew resentful of the British rulers, who the Irish felt did little to help bring relief
during the difficult time. It was this tragedy that spawned the rebirth of Irish Nationalism within the
souls of the citizenry. The Irish were becoming more interested in bringing back their true Irish
Identity. So few of the Irish population were speaking Irish, and that along with the Irish way of life,
all seemed to be in decline due to the invasion of British rule. There were many determined to push
back and preserve the rich, lively traditions and prevent the language from being lost forever. People
set to work in all areas to revive the areas overrun by the outside influences. A "refreshingly
romantic and idealistic nationalism attracted the youth of Ireland" (University College Cork),
stirring the pot for all sorts of cultural activity to take hold of the national consciousness. In 1884,
the Gaelic Athletic Association was formed to bring back traditional Irish sports games. The
association did not discriminate against any religion, and welcomed all that were interested in taking
part of this Irish renaissance. The Gaelic League was then founded in 1893, and was instrumental in
becoming a beacon for true transformation. It organized language and Irish culture classes.

Cultural Awareness In Ireland
. Cultural Awareness Paper: Ireland
I decided to better my understanding and my cultural awareness on the country of Ireland given my
family's Irish heritage. The island in the north Atlantic, and the northwestern part of Europe, has a
rich history and a vibrant culture. It is important to keep an understanding of their culture because
Ireland is not all too different from ourselves. Ranging from politics and social culture, Ireland does
have a uniquely authentic identity developed through centuries of struggle. I find it is important to
have a deeper understanding of their culture.
Ireland's geography is unique in a sense that it has beauty in all corners of the country. It is made up
of vast, low central plains surrounded by large coastal mountains with thick woodlands. Many of the
beautiful cities of Ireland fall on the coasts or are riverside. The capitol of Ireland is Dublin and the
main cities of attraction for tourists are Dublin, Galway, Cork, and Killarney. The country has an old
feeling to it due to having such old structures, such as castles and bars that are older than our very
own country. The island of Ireland is surrounded by three bodies of water. The Atlantic Ocean on the
west of the country, the Celtic Sea to the south of the country, and the Irish Sea to the east of the
country, separating it from England. Due to a lot of the land being on the waterfront, throughout the
country it remains a cool temperature, with an average temperature of roughly 50

Taking a Look at Harp Lager
1. Brand History.
Harp lager was launched in 1960. It was first brewed in the Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk.
The drink was created under the guidance of Dr. Herman Muender who fused German beer
knowledge with Irish brewing heritage. Harp which is now owned by the drinks company Diageo
fast became the most popular lager brand in Ireland. When it was launched it was marketed as a new
modern drink that would appeal to young males and females alike. It was a sister brand of Guinness
which was associated with older men in the country. Slogans used in the initial marketing campaigns
included " Have you heard the call yet" and "Brewed in Ireland – naturally" evoking a sense of pride
in the home brewed beer during the troubles in the country. It became the first mass marketed
draught lager in Ireland and the UK. Harp remained successful through the 80s and into the 90s
when some of its advertisements helped launch the careers of TV personalities such as Jonathan
Ross. However, the brand never reached the same success it had in the 70s when it held the majority
of the market share. The brand was re–launched in 1994 coinciding with the World Cup, sales rose
by 12%. However this re–launch didn't result in continued consumer loyalty and this boost soon
subsided. Last year Diageo Ireland launched a new look for Harp larger with the aim to increase the
brands relevance to larger drinkers. The new design was inspired by the Samuel Beckett bridge in
Dublin the new look was meat to be

Álainn, which means beautiful in Irish. Even though I haven't been to Ireland, I have seen pictures,
and it is beautiful country. I am Irish because of my dad's ancestors who came to America in the late
1800's. The countries weather is amazing compared to what I have. In Ireland there is a plenty of
things to do during the day. My family celebrates some of the Irish holidays, but we don't do any of
their customs. I was so excited to learn about the culture and the life of the Irish.
Ireland is such an interesting country to learn about at least for me. The weather there, in Dublin, is
nothing like ours, they actually have winter, but we do have plenty of rain. They have mild summers
and cool winters. The people that live there are Vikings, Normans, English, Scottish, and a tribe
called the Ancient Celts. Also their religion is Christianity. Ireland has a bunch of industries like:
manufacturing, finance, tourism, and the primary one is agriculture. People in Ireland must be busy

combination of the sports we know as baseball, field hockey, rugby, and soccer. Hurling is an
ancient game and one of the national sports of Ireland. It's widely considered to be the fastest game
on grass. Oh the holidays, I love the holidays, especially Christmas. Ireland has as many of the same
holidays as we do. As it said in the Irish book some of their major holidays are "New Years, St.
Patrick's Day, St. Bridget's Day, Shrove Tuesday (the day before Lent), and Easter." "Irish culture is

Dia dhuit– hello. The culture of Ireland is interesting to me because my dad and grandma are Irish, I
have an Irish name, and I look very Irish. Ireland is located in Europe the neighboring countries are
Scotland and England. The Religion of most of Ireland is Catholic and Protestant. Even though my
family has Irish roots we are not a lot like Irish families because we don't eat the same foods they
do, we eat a lot of American food. The culture of Ireland is very interesting and informative to learn
about.
First of all the population of Ireland is 4,618,000 and the area of Ireland is 27,133 square miles. The
landscape in Ireland is consisted mostly of farms, plains, and low mountains. In Ireland most of its
industry or business is Agriculture. The thing that is mostly grown in Ireland is potatoes. The
population of Ireland is about 4,618,000. According to school.eb.com "About three fifths of Ireland's

The Mind Game: The Effects Of Mental Health In Athletes
The Mind Game: The Effects of Mental Health in Athletes
The connection of the mental game and the athletes for any rank of sports has been extremely
underestimated. While some believe that all athletes are "all brawn and no brain," this disregards
how much mental activity is brought into any sport. It connects to the fear and separation of mental
health for athletes. If an athletes is showing signs of any type of mental issue or disorders, their spot
on the team has been threatened. The coaches and staff sometime cannot simply understand the
importance of treatment for an athlete. Depression, anxiety, burnout and other disorders causes
athletes to do poorly with their mental game, making them appear that these athletes would not be ...

History Of The Irish Famine
The United States had a huge impact on Ireland. It can be stated that it started off with the Americas
shipping potatoes up to Ireland. The Irish became dependent on the spud as there were many
available and the variation in meals you can prepare with them. One can boil them, mash them, or
stick them in a stew along with many other delicacies. By 1845, 40 percent of the country's
population routinely lived almost entirely on potatoes.
Along came Ireland's great famine between 1845 and 1952. This famine not only killed through
starvation, but also with terrible illnesses and bone deterioration. These diseases included, but were
not limited to, typhus, scurvy, syphilis, osteomyelitis, tuberculosis, and rickets. These people were

The world is a ball, by John Doyle, explores the culture of soccer. Doyle writes about everything
that has to do with his favourite sport– from the attitude of hosting countries, to the attitude of fans,
to the scores of the games, to the political side of soccer. Doyle discusses all the different aspects of
soccer, all while travelling the world to watch soccer. The book begins with Doyle reminiscing to
the first time he watched a soccer team– Ireland, 1967. Growing up in a family highly opposed to
English pop–culture, soccer was something he rarely heard about. He grew up in a country where
Gaelic football and hurling was the sport to watch and play, and where watching or playing soccer
could result in trouble with The Christian Brothers.

Theme Of Paul Durcan
Paul Durcan is a poet on my course who I found challenging to understand at first reading.
However, after having read his poems several times and considered motifs that occur consistently,
what emerges isn't confusing, but is instead a complex portrait of a complex man: The Difficulty
That Is Paul Durcan. The often pensive subject matter of Durcan's poems ranges widely, from
explorations of cultural change in contemporary Ireland to intimate studies of human relationships.
Many of the narrative poems he writes are autobiographical, filled with dark humour and satirical
jibes. He creates a sense of place and community within his poems which adds authenticity. In
addition, he uses literal language and imagery to communicate with his audience, ... Show more

Mental suffering is a theme which Durcan explores in "En Famille, 1979" and "Sport". Durcan's
intense poetry often focuses on memories of loneliness. "En Famille, 1979" almost appears to be a
cry for help, as though the poet has never come to terms with the traumatic effects of his earliest
experiences. The "dark school" presents a disturbing metaphor of his childhood. Durcan's use of the
French title meaning 'with one's family' is heartbreakingly poignant. Yet he remains obsessed with
the past. His unsettled childhood, particularly his painful relationship with his father, has much
marked his poetry. Similarly, "Sport" examines the effects of rejection. The father–son relationship
has remained the same all through his life. The devastation he experienced as a young man
desperately attempting to impress his father is evident in the bleakness of the phrase "I was fearful I
would let you down". The poet's fondness of dark humour is emphasised in his exaggerated
description of the opposition players. The Mulling team had "gapped teeth, red faces..." They
scarcely seemed human. However, despite his use of humour, it disguise Durcan's continuing
disappointment with this

The first humanoids appeared in Ireland during the 7th millennium BC. They are believed to have
arrived from France and Scandinavia over the open ocean. They settled areas on the North Eastern
coast of Ireland. During the Mesolithic period inhabitants depended mostly on fishing and hunting
and gathering. Curraghs, light weight boats, were used to navigate inland water and coastal fishing.
The only remnants of this culture are the imprints left in pottery, there were no major contributions

Patrick's Confessio was written circa 440 AD, by St. Patrick. In the Confessio St. Patrick tells the
story to the Irish people of why he came to Ireland. He tell them of the messages sent to him from
God throughout his life that had saved him from slavery during his childhood. He uses the story of
his life to show the Irish why they should turn to Christianity. St. Patrick even explains the Irish that
he is not a perfect person. "I know I cannot trust myself as long as I am in this body subject to
death" This quote shows that he does not hold him above the Irish people, but as an equal. He talks
about how even though he has sinned God has forgiven him and has even saved him in times of
need. This confession by St Patrick also defends his actions in Ireland. "When I baptised so many
thousands of people, did I hope to receive even the smallest payment? If so, tell me, and I will return
it to you" This quote tells the Irish that he is not converting them in a selfish way. He is converting
them for their sakes and because he was asked by God himself. In 1171 internal struggle for power
caused the Irish to be open to attack from Anglo–Welsh warriors. This is the first time that Ireland
had faced an army from outside of it's own borders, which had this meant that he Irish had not had
to keep up with the current military innovations. In October of 1171 King Henry II arrived in
Ireland. In 1172 King Henry took Dublin under his protection and issued the first Charter for "his
city".

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has limited range of motion, which leads to it being the most

The effect of this aggressive competition can be seen in Figure 2, which shows a sharp decrease in
Lucozade's market share from 2002, following the introduction of Powerade (owned by Coca–Cola)

seen Lucozade Sport regain market share, firmly consolidating its position of market dominance in
Ireland. This trend endorses the quality of Lucozade Sport's marketing, as it is succeeding in
fighting off stiff competition. "Functional drinks is dominated by Lucozade brand, with Lucozade

During these times of economic difficulty, the government has reduced the amount of funding given
to the Irish Sports Council. This has a huge consequence on the Irish Sports Council and it restricts
the development of the programmes they intend to start to increase participation in sport. Lack of
funding means that the Irish Sports Council can only use a limited amount of resources and provide
a limited amount of programmes to ensure that they remain within the budget provided. Similarly,
the lowered budget means that less people can be employed to grow the programmes and raise
awareness of the initiatives of the Irish Sports Council. The implementation of the strategic plans the
Irish Sports Council has set out will encounter many difficulties. One difficulty they will encounter
will be trying to get feedback from all of the Local Sports Partnerships and from people who

Potato Famine Research Paper
The potato famine started in the mid 1800s and lasted for several years, killing over a million irish
people and causing 6 million to flee the country. Potatoes were vital to the irish diet, many irish
people ate mostly potatoes since they were so poor. Many got infected by this epidemic. This report
will talk about the irish potato famine.
The potato blight was originally discovered in Belgium. The potato blight hit Ireland in 1845 in
june. Know it is known that the same infection also hit America in 1843 and 1845. Some experts
believe it migrated in ships sailing from North America to Europe. It also may have been imported
from South America where many European countries got their fertilizer from.

In July of 1846 only one fourth of the normal crop was saved. In June of the same year, Lord John
Russell became Prime Minister of a minority Whig government. The Whigs believed in the policies
of laissez faire economics and therefore, were "committed to free trade and were opposed to
interfering with normal commerce, either by importing cheap foodstuffs or, as was the done in
previous crises, by preventing the export of food" (Kissane 45). Under normal circumstances, such
policies would be appropriate, but during the famine they only led to disaster.
One of the most remarkable facts about the famine period is that there was an average monthly
export of food from Ireland worth 100,000 Pound Sterling. Almost throughout the five–year famine,
Ireland remained a net exporter of food.
Potato thrived in damp irish climate. Many farmers from other countries came to farm the potato

Hill fort building was also a main a characteristic of the Iron Age. In early celtic Ireland, the land
was divided into clans. Each clan was independent under an elected king. Sometimes clans would
join together and the king who ruled over both clans received respect and honor rather than
sovereignty. In the tenth century there was finally a king of all Ireland. The land was then divided
into five different clans known as the Five Fifths which appeared in the proximity of the Christian
era. The five clans were Ulster, Meath, Leinster, Munster, and Connaught. It was not until the
eleventh century that Munster took supreme kingship over all of Ireland. The higher class lived
around the kind and lived under clearly defined laws. Other society classes took care of the cattle
and fields of those from a higher class. Early Celtic Ireland was full of rearing cattle and growing
crops. For other food, fishing, hunting, fowling, and trapping was necessary. The transportation of
goods was done by the means of packhorses for land, and curraghs for water. A currah is a wicker–

Britain was brought into the mainstream of western European culture. This was the beginning of the
English class system. The Normans introduced a strong system of government. During this time
Scotland remained independent.
Culturally speaking there were several aspects:
– Middle English and NOT the Norman French had become the dominant language in all classes.
– The Anglo–Saxon concept of common law NOT Roman law formed the basis of the legal system.
– Wales was never settled in great numbers by Saxon or Norman, thus (Celtic) Welsh language
remained strong.
– Scotland gradually switched to English language and customs in the lowland.
– In this period Parliament began its gradual evolution into the democratic body which it is today.
Sixteenth century
The power of the English monarch increased in this period. The strength of the great barons had
been greatly weakened by the Wars of the Roses:
The Wars of the Roses = During the 15th century the throne of England was claimed by
representatives of 2 rival groups.
Tudor dynasty (1485–1603) – Established a system of government departments. Because of this, the
feudal barons were no longer needed.
Parliament consists of:
– House of Lords (feudal aristocracy and the leaders of the Church)
– House of Commons (representatives from the towns and the less important landowners in rural
areas)

A Very Brief Look at Ireland
An old myth claims that St.Patrick used his to scare all the snakes into sea. Therefore, there are no
snakes in Ireland. Ireland gained it's independence from Great Britain in 1937. The "head" of Ireland
is still under Britain's command. Before Ireland became a country, Ireland was covered in ice and
snow, during the the Last Glacial Maximum. The Last Glacial Maximum is the era when ice covered
northern Europe, Asia, and America, which was about 20,000 years ago. Ireland is the sixth richest
country in the world, which is surprising because it is mostly farm land.
Around 600 and 800 B.C. Celtic tribes began to settle on Ireland. Around the 12th century Britain
took the Irish's independence. During the potato famine, in the 1840s, farmers dug up potatoes then
a day after the potatoes became slimy, blackish, "mass of rottenness". About 1 1/4 million Irish left
their homes. They took ships Canada and America hoping for a better life.
On 1916, Easter Monday, Ireland started a Rebellion. The "IRA", Irish Republican Army, fought
Britain for five years to win independence for 26 southern counties. The other 6 counties are still
under Britain's control. This lead to the "Troubles" in the 1960's which were acts of violence on the
United Kingdom Army. The United Kingdom, United States, and Ireland was a part of a process that
helped traders and sellers which is know as "The Good Friday Agreement" in 1988, in Northern
Ireland. In 1990, Mary Robinson changed Ireland's history by

Does Participating in Sports Help Reduce the Levels of...
Introduction In the world many people are sad and depressed and just don't feel the need to do
anything at all other than sulk and wish they were dead, this is not the way someone should live.
There should be some way to take someone out of this depressive state or to keep someone from
ever reaching it but what? The answer is organized sports and their ability to kick start hormones in
the body and allow for a new sense of happiness within the body. To find out the depression levels
of the participants and see if physical activity effects all participants with different levels of
depression or only participates of low levels of depression, we will use a beck depression scale to
test the levels of the participants throughout the study. This is important because it will help to bring
about a new way to keep a large amount of people away from depression because we know the
effects of physical activity on society in order keep depression at a controllable rate. Purpose of the
Study The purpose of my study to find out if participating in sports helps to reduce the levels of
depression in college students. I am hoping to find out if there is a relationship between playing a
sport and controlled levels of depression in college students, so that depression can be controlled
and monitored in an inexpensive way. This will lead up to the need for physical activity throughout
grade school years in hopes to keep depression to a minimum no matter what age or demographics.

Differences Between Football And Sports
Football is a sport that is highly regarded all around the globe. The sport has immense popularity
where the UEFA Champions League final attracts an estimated of 350 million viewers each year].
Football has had great success globally where there is an estimated of 250 million Football players
worldwide]. Despite the sport's tremendous influence and popularity, various countries have found it
difficult to integrate Football as a regularly played sport, and two notable countries are the United
States and Ireland. Both the United States and Ireland have had similarities, with similarities ranging
from both countries' sense of differentiation from that of Britain, and differences such as their
overall attempts to be involved with the sport, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Ireland had the same situation with the sport of Football. After being conquered by the
British empire in the 16th century, Ireland developed resentment towards the British because of the
mistreatment and the dominance Britain tried to impose over Ireland. Regardless of the sensation of
nationalism in Ireland, British culture was heavily influential, but one man realized that Ireland
needed a cultural revitalization. In 1984, Michael Cusack, founder of the Gaelic Athletic
Association, sent a letter between him and Archbishop T.W. Croke which was published in both The
Nation and The Freeman's Journal. In the letter, Cusack asked Croke if he was willing to become a
patron of the GAA; willingly, Croke supported the association. Croke makes importance of why
Ireland should disband from British culture as he explains "we had better once, and publicly, adjure
our nationality, clap hands for joy at the sight of the Union Jack, and place 'England's bloody red'
exultingly above 'the green."] Croke highlights that if Ireland continue in the same direction, Ireland
is submitting to the British and their culture. If this is case, then Ireland should completely disregard
their culture and exchange their flag for Britain's Union Jack. He believes that

Taking a Look at Hurling
Hurling is believed to be the worlds oldest and fastest paced sport in history. Its roots have
prehistoric origins and have been played for over 3,000 years, even older than recorded history of
Ireland, which is its national game of play. The history itself of hurling is longer than the Bible and
often unclear. Nonetheless hurling is an incredible sport full of rich history and a truly rigorous
sport.
Since hurling is not a well–known sport to us Americans, I'm going to give a brief background of the
sport and how it is played. Hurling is an outdoor team game; each team consists of 15 players on the
field aka "Hurlers". The field of play is relatively the same shape of a rugby field but just a bit
larger: 140–160 yards long and 90–100 yards wide (Hurling GAA). Scoring is a mix of American
football and soccer. At each end of the field are an H–shaped goalpost; the soccer type goal and a
field goal type extension on top of that. If the ball (sliotar) is struck inside the bottom net, that team
is rewarded three points, if the ball is struck and goes in–between the top field goal posts the team
gets one point. The equipment of the game consists of a ball, sliotar that is roughly the size of a
baseball but with raised ridges. The stick called a hurley, roughly 40 inches long, shaped like a field
hockey stick is curved outwards at the end to provide a larger striking surface for the player. The
only protective gear worn is a helmet with a faceguard, which before 2010 was not

What Is The Role Of The GAA In 1916
his thesis will examine the role of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Dublin during the 1916
Easter Rising and the impact the Easter Rising had on the GAA in Dublin after April 1916.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the background of the GAA in Dublin from it's formation in
1886 up to 1914, including the nationalit aspect of the Association at that time. The formation of the
Irish Volunteers will also be examined in great detail, as will the involvement of the members of the
GAA in Dublin in the Great War. The central part of the thesis will be the 1916 Easter Rising and
the involvement of the members of the GAA in Dublin in the insurrection. The official reaction of
the GAA to the Easter Rising and the growth of Dublin GAA after April 1916 will prove how the
GAA in Dublin changed following the insurrection. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

an insight into the GAA in Dublin as well as nationally and from these a greater understanding of

Cricket Across The Irish Sea Essay
What lies ahead for cricket across the Irish Sea? By Sandipan Banerjee Ireland may be one of the
two newest Test playing nations the cricketing world right now but the sport has a deep–rooted
association with the island across the Irish Sea. The first ever formal cricket match was played in
this country back in 1792, when the Military of Ireland and the Gentlemen of Ireland took each
other at the Phoenix Park in Dublin –– a match, considered to be one of the oldest by the cricket
historians. By the middle of the 19th century, cricket emerged as the most popular sport in the
island. Then came the dark era of Irish cricket. With the emergence of nationalist movement and
Gaelic games, cricket suffered the most. It was projected as a ... Show more content on

The amount is not even half of what Zimbabwe, the lowest ranked Test team (Before June 22, 2017
when ICC provided Test status and full–membership to Ireland and Afghanistan) is getting (annually

(ODI) league, providing guaranteed fixtures against top nations. This means, Cricket Ireland will
now have a package of matches which they can sell to broadcasters and commercial sponsors in
order to be financially stronger. According to Warren Deutrom, the chief executive of Cricket
Ireland, these new developments could double Ireland's annual turnover. The extra cash has to be
invested in grassroots development and in improving the domestic structure (which is already better
than a few existing full–members like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh) of men's and women's cricket.
The authorities also have to address the issue of player migration, which many consider as the
primary problem of Irish cricket. Following the recent financial upgrades, Cricket Ireland will soon
be in a position to pay country's leading professional cricketers significantly so that the tendency of
heading towards English County cricket can be controlled. Even the cricketers with an Irish origin,
who are playing at the domestic circuit of Australia, can now seriously think about coming back to
Ireland, if the board offers well paid off deals. In Ireland, cricket may not be the most popular sport,

Essay On The GAA In 1916
Although there were some significant changes evident in the GAA in Dublin in 1917 the majority of
the Association in Dublin remained the same as before.
The GAA in Dublin had a large increase in the number of clubs affiliated to it since the 1915
convention, with seventy clubs listed at the Annual Convention of 1916 which was held on 14
January 1917. Some of the new clubs were named in memory of those killed during the 1916.1
William Nolan notes that the Volunteers from North Dublin, founded the Thomas Weafer GAA
Club, in memory of the Wexford–born member of the GPO Garrison, whose brother Patrick, a
member of St Laurence O Tooles GAA club who had also fought in the same Garrison.2 It is also
important to note that Erin's Isle GAA club in Finglas, was founded in January 1917 by a number of
men involved in the Volunteers with direct links to those who fought in the Easter ... Show more

Many historians such as David Fitzpatrick claim that the increase in the number of spectators was
due to the fact that the GAA had become radicalised in the nationalist culture of Ireland during
19178 but it could also be argued that the reason for the increase was the fact that the GAA in
Dublin had seventy clubs in January 1917, a number which grew to eighty–eight clubs by the 1917
convention, held on 3 February 1918. This was a significant number on the amount of clubs in
Kilkenny (Tipperary's opponents in 1916) which had an estimated sixteen clubs.9Therefore, Dublin
had more members and significantly also the game was played at Croke Park meaning that the
spectators in Dublin were not required to travel long distances to the final in 1917 whereas the
spectators of the teams in the 1916 had to do

Compare And Contrast Hispanic Football Vs American Football
Students all over the country play American Football, but is this the best sport for them to play?
Gaelic football is a fast pace Irish sport. The rules of the sport were officially established in 1887.
The game is played with 15 players per team. In order to score, players must kick the ball in the
upright post or into the goal. Even though Gaelic football is one of the most popular sports in
Ireland, not many people play it in America. Gaelic football is better for students to play than
American football because there is more action, it is safer, and Gaelic football costs less money.
First, Gaelic football is better for students because there is more action. A Gaelic football game is 70
minutes long, and the players are active the whole time. American Football fans note, "An average

When playing contact sports, it is easy for students to get a concussion. Acquired Brain Injury
Ireland reports, "54 percent of those surveyed said YES they have been concussed while playing
[Gaelic Football]"(ABI Ireland). Even though this may seem like a lot of people getting concussed,
it is notably less than the number of people in American Football. According to Head Case, about
76.8 percent of kids get a concussion. This would mean that 22 percent more people get concussions
in football. 22 out of one hundred kids would get hurt while playing. The Gaelic Football statistics
are for an adult league, so there would be less recorded concussions for students because they would
be less aggressive. When playing American Football, the students are constantly hitting each other,
which would increase the risk of getting a concussion. In Gaelic football, players are not allowed to
tackle. Children's brains are not fully developed yet, and it is dangerous for them to be constantly
hitting each other. Students should play Gaelic football instead of American Football because it is

The Call for the Gaelic League Essay
The Call for the Gaelic League
What would the United States be like if Americans couldn't practice their customs, culture, or even
appreciate their heritage? Granted the United States is a "melting pot" for several ethnicities, but
some native countries and cultures have faced this type of dilemma. The Spanish influence on the
Aztecs and the English on Native Americans are two examples of this imperialistic move. If only
these cultures had a strong network of men and women who devoted their lives towards keeping
their culture and history alive for future generations. The Gaelic League was based upon this
definition. Bringing together a network of Irish speaking teachers, priests, and writers, the Gaelic

The congestion led to the activation of the Irish Poor laws in 1838 by Great Britain's Queen Victoria.
These laws were enforced in an attempt to promote emigration to areas like the United States and
Australia. All the outcomes of the Famine were not necessarily negative. One such incentive was
modernization. According to Garvin, "Ireland has been a modernizing society since the Famine, and
the tragedy of the Famine was itself the occasion of a great modernizing change" (469). The demand
for an institution of education was in order.
To answer the demand would eventually lead to, "The Gaelic League, the dominant institution of the
third revival," (Hutchinson 484) with the second revival being the Irish Protestant/ Catholic
liberation of 1829. With the loss of so many people, religion became a large part of the community.
Such a devastating event left the Irish vulnerable to outside influences, especially the British. A
powerful nation could easily push its culture, society, and government on a weak country like
Ireland in the mid to late 1800s. To counter the British, religion took on a stronghold on Irish living.
The Catholic Church, through the work of dedicated priests throughout the southern regions of
Ireland, grew in popularity and even united small rural towns. This action rebuilt trust in
communities and aided the most devastated of areas. The major Christian groups, Irish Protestants
and Catholics, would be among the

how it impacts society.

The United Kingdom : A Stable Government Model Essay
The United Kingdom, the gem of Europe, has offered more to the world than just a stable
government model. It has proven to be successful economically and a professional when it comes to
Foreign affairs. The United Kingdom is triple generator powerhouse consisting the best of the best
from England, Wales, and Scotland. The United Kingdom is not only a revolutionary when it comes
to the economy, but also in music, literature and sports.
A legend like the United Kingdom is not simply created, it was foraged through hardships and
tribulations in order to become an unstoppable force of nature. According to the Encyclopedia
Britannica after many conquests by an Anglo–Saxon king, Ireland fell under English rule and
formally joined Great Britain in 1800 with the Act of Union. Though Ireland later regained its
independence in 1922 but two thirds of the country stayed apart of the United Kingdom. The United
Kingdom who was no longer a "Kingdom" but now part of a growing monarchy has endured many
throughout the years. According to FiveforThrity, "The United Kingdom is a constitutional
monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with a queen and a parliament that has two houses: The
House of Lords and House of Commons." FiveforThrity also states "Supreme legislative power is
vested in parliament, which sits for five years unless dissolved sooner as well as the fact that The
House of Lords was stripped of most of its power in 1911, and now its main function is to revise
legislation."

Cause for Action Essay
Cause for Action
Imagine a country where a person's belongings could be taken at any moment and then given to
someone else for no apparent reason. Likewise, that same person's culture, their way of life, would
be disregarded, and they would be forced to use a new language and adapt to a different culture.
After the culture is done away with, those who remember it die off rapidly. Even with the declining
culture, religious persecution becomes apparent along with the long political conflicts. This very
incident occurred at the end of the 19th century. It happened in Ireland to the Gaelic culture, but a
man by the name of Douglas Hyde wasn't about to let his culture disappear. Thus the Gaelic League
was created. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many Irish then tried to immigrate to America. What used to be a small amount of immigrants,
turned into a flood of Irish wanting to leave Ireland. Because of the high demand of people wanting
to leave quickly, the normal route of stopping in Liverpool turned into a straight shot to America.
Most immigrants died en route from diseases, and many died when ships frequently would sink, due
to holding more than their maximum capacity. This was one reason for a tremendous drop in the
Irish population.
By 1891, 14.5% of the Irish nation claimed to speak the language.
The Gaelic Athletic Association was a vital precursor to the formation of the Gaelic League. It was
established on November 1st, 1884. One of the Gaelic Athletic Association's goals was to construct
games promoting the Gaelic culture, and provide rules and encouragement to the people of Ireland
to participate in Irish recreation and sports. It first concerned itself with the athletics. The association
set up competitions at local parishes and other places throughout the counties. This renewed a
sensation of pride for the disturbed Irish people. Once after a hurling match in 1885, approximately
fifteen thousand people attended a meeting by the Gaelic Athletic Association in support of the
athletics which was a significant success for the association. Not long after, the first ALL–Ireland
finals were held in

Similarities And Differences Between The Scottish And...
Even though there are many similarities between the Scottish and Irish cultures, there are also many
differences. For one, the Scottish have trouble defining what Scottish culture is, this is because they
joined the UK at a very early time. Because of this, much of Scottish culture has joined together
with English culture. This could be seen when we were walking around Glasgow and saw many
English Art and sculptures, as well as walking around the Holyrood house in Edenborough. And
now that Scotland may break away from England, the people cling to fantasy and mystery, as well
as their own accomplishments to create and define Scottish culture. In Glasgow, the Peoples Palace
displayed many accomplishments of the cities people, all stating that they were the first to invent
this and the first to do that. Instead of looking back, the city showed how it was progressive and
urged its people to move forward. In Edenborough, the tour guide talked about how they were the
first to invent skyscrapers and other architecture. Instead of talking about how the country moved
forward as a whole, each city talked about how they moved forward and the people in it. Scotland
has also clung to many mythological and fantasy ideals. For one, the national animal of Scotland is
the Unicorn, which is a mythological creature. Also, during the ghost tour I took around
Edenborough, the Scottish believe that they invented Halloween and the city is filled with ghost
stories. Even in the north, Loch

Young Yeats' Time in Sligo Inspired His Early Visions

  • 1. Young Yeats Research Paper Young Yeats spent much of his childhood in Sligo, Ireland. It was in Sligo where his earliest visions began to form. Through the Pollexfen's, William was able to experience life on the water, as his grandfather owned a fleet of ships and the Sligo Steam Navigation Company. As the grandson of this sea merchant, the sailors onboard the fleets, as well as the servants back at home, would all treat young William like royalty. The Pollexfen's world was complete with yachts and summer homes. Despite separation from his father for much of his youth, William was without want. He was free to wander about to discover the beauties, and explore the myths and legends of this enchanted place. William would miss Sligo immensely when this family would move ... The Irish grew resentful of the British rulers, who the Irish felt did little to help bring relief during the difficult time. It was this tragedy that spawned the rebirth of Irish Nationalism within the souls of the citizenry. The Irish were becoming more interested in bringing back their true Irish Identity. So few of the Irish population were speaking Irish, and that along with the Irish way of life, all seemed to be in decline due to the invasion of British rule. There were many determined to push back and preserve the rich, lively traditions and prevent the language from being lost forever. People set to work in all areas to revive the areas overrun by the outside influences. A "refreshingly romantic and idealistic nationalism attracted the youth of Ireland" (University College Cork), stirring the pot for all sorts of cultural activity to take hold of the national consciousness. In 1884, the Gaelic Athletic Association was formed to bring back traditional Irish sports games. The association did not discriminate against any religion, and welcomed all that were interested in taking part of this Irish renaissance. The Gaelic League was then founded in 1893, and was instrumental in becoming a beacon for true transformation. It organized language and Irish culture classes. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Cultural Awareness In Ireland . Cultural Awareness Paper: Ireland I decided to better my understanding and my cultural awareness on the country of Ireland given my family's Irish heritage. The island in the north Atlantic, and the northwestern part of Europe, has a rich history and a vibrant culture. It is important to keep an understanding of their culture because Ireland is not all too different from ourselves. Ranging from politics and social culture, Ireland does have a uniquely authentic identity developed through centuries of struggle. I find it is important to have a deeper understanding of their culture. Ireland's geography is unique in a sense that it has beauty in all corners of the country. It is made up of vast, low central plains surrounded by large coastal mountains with thick woodlands. Many of the beautiful cities of Ireland fall on the coasts or are riverside. The capitol of Ireland is Dublin and the main cities of attraction for tourists are Dublin, Galway, Cork, and Killarney. The country has an old feeling to it due to having such old structures, such as castles and bars that are older than our very own country. The island of Ireland is surrounded by three bodies of water. The Atlantic Ocean on the west of the country, the Celtic Sea to the south of the country, and the Irish Sea to the east of the country, separating it from England. Due to a lot of the land being on the waterfront, throughout the country it remains a cool temperature, with an average temperature of roughly 50 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Taking a Look at Harp Lager 1. Brand History. Harp lager was launched in 1960. It was first brewed in the Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk. The drink was created under the guidance of Dr. Herman Muender who fused German beer knowledge with Irish brewing heritage. Harp which is now owned by the drinks company Diageo fast became the most popular lager brand in Ireland. When it was launched it was marketed as a new modern drink that would appeal to young males and females alike. It was a sister brand of Guinness which was associated with older men in the country. Slogans used in the initial marketing campaigns included " Have you heard the call yet" and "Brewed in Ireland – naturally" evoking a sense of pride in the home brewed beer during the troubles in the country. It became the first mass marketed draught lager in Ireland and the UK. Harp remained successful through the 80s and into the 90s when some of its advertisements helped launch the careers of TV personalities such as Jonathan Ross. However, the brand never reached the same success it had in the 70s when it held the majority of the market share. The brand was re–launched in 1994 coinciding with the World Cup, sales rose by 12%. However this re–launch didn't result in continued consumer loyalty and this boost soon subsided. Last year Diageo Ireland launched a new look for Harp larger with the aim to increase the brands relevance to larger drinkers. The new design was inspired by the Samuel Beckett bridge in Dublin the new look was meat to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Ireland Research Paper Álainn, which means beautiful in Irish. Even though I haven't been to Ireland, I have seen pictures, and it is beautiful country. I am Irish because of my dad's ancestors who came to America in the late 1800's. The countries weather is amazing compared to what I have. In Ireland there is a plenty of things to do during the day. My family celebrates some of the Irish holidays, but we don't do any of their customs. I was so excited to learn about the culture and the life of the Irish. Ireland is such an interesting country to learn about at least for me. The weather there, in Dublin, is nothing like ours, they actually have winter, but we do have plenty of rain. They have mild summers and cool winters. The people that live there are Vikings, Normans, English, Scottish, and a tribe called the Ancient Celts. Also their religion is Christianity. Ireland has as many of the same holidays as we do. As it said in the Irish book some of their major holidays are "New Years, St. Patrick's Day, St. Bridget's Day, Shrove Tuesday (the day before Lent), and Easter." Ireland is located in Europe the neighboring countries are Scotland and England. The Religion of most of Ireland is Catholic and Protestant. Even though my family has Irish roots we are not a lot like Irish families because we don't eat the same foods they do, we eat a lot of American food. The Mind Game: The Effects Of Mental Health In Athletes The Mind Game: The Effects of Mental Health in Athletes The connection of the mental game and the athletes for any rank of sports has been extremely underestimated. While some believe that all athletes are "all brawn and no brain," this disregards how much mental activity is brought into any sport. The Irish became dependent on the spud as there were many available and the variation in meals you can prepare with them. One can boil them, mash them, or stick them in a stew along with many other delicacies. By 1845, 40 percent of the country's population routinely lived almost entirely on potatoes. Doyle discusses all the different aspects of soccer, all while travelling the world to watch soccer. The book begins with Doyle reminiscing to the first time he watched a soccer team– Ireland, 1967. Growing up in a family highly opposed to English pop–culture, soccer was something he rarely heard about. He grew up in a country where Gaelic football and hurling was the sport to watch and play, and where watching or playing soccer could result in trouble with The Christian Brothers. ... However, after having read his poems several times and considered motifs that occur consistently, what emerges isn't confusing, but is instead a complex portrait of a complex man: The Difficulty That Is Paul Durcan. The often pensive subject matter of Durcan's poems ranges widely, from explorations of cultural change in contemporary Ireland to intimate studies of human relationships. Mental suffering is a theme which Durcan explores in "En Famille, 1979" and "Sport". Durcan's intense poetry often focuses on memories of loneliness. "En Famille, 1979" almost appears to be a cry for help, as though the poet has never come to terms with the traumatic effects of his earliest experiences. The "dark school" presents a disturbing metaphor of his childhood. Durcan's use of the French title meaning 'with one's family' is heartbreakingly poignant. Yet he remains obsessed with the past. His unsettled childhood, particularly his painful relationship with his father, has much marked his poetry. Similarly, "Sport" examines the effects of rejection. The father–son relationship has remained the same all through his life. The devastation he experienced as a young man desperately attempting to impress his father is evident in the bleakness of the phrase "I was fearful I would let you down". The poet's fondness of dark humour is emphasised in his exaggerated description of the opposition players. The Mulling team had "gapped teeth, red faces..." They scarcely seemed human. However, despite his use of humour, it disguise Durcan's continuing disappointment with this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He uses the story of his life to show the Irish why they should turn to Christianity. St. Patrick even explains the Irish that he is not a perfect person. "I know I cannot trust myself as long as I am in this body subject to death" This quote shows that he does not hold him above the Irish people, but as an equal. He talks about how even though he has sinned God has forgiven him and has even saved him in times of need. This confession by St Patrick also defends his actions in Ireland. "When I baptised so many thousands of people, did I hope to receive even the smallest payment? If so, tell me, and I will return it to you" This quote tells the Irish that he is not converting them in a selfish way. He is converting them for their sakes and because he was asked by God himself. In 1171 internal struggle for power caused the Irish to be open to attack from Anglo–Welsh warriors. One of the most remarkable facts about the famine period is that there was an average monthly export of food from Ireland worth 100,000 Pound Sterling. Ireland gained it's independence from Great Britain in 1937. The "head" of Ireland is still under Britain's command. Before Ireland became a country, Ireland was covered in ice and snow, during the the Last Glacial Maximum. The Last Glacial Maximum is the era when ice covered northern Europe, Asia, and America, which was about 20,000 years ago. Ireland is the sixth richest country in the world, which is surprising because it is mostly farm land. Around 600 and 800 B.C. Celtic tribes began to settle on Ireland. Around the 12th century Britain took the Irish's independence. During the potato famine, in the 1840s, farmers dug up potatoes then a day after the potatoes became slimy, blackish, "mass of rottenness". About 1 1/4 million Irish left their homes. They took ships Canada and America hoping for a better life. On 1916, Easter Monday, Ireland started a Rebellion. The "IRA", Irish Republican Army, fought Britain for five years to win independence for 26 southern counties. The other 6 counties are still under Britain's control. This lead to the "Troubles" in the 1960's which were acts of violence on the United Kingdom Army. Introduction In the world many people are sad and depressed and just don't feel the need to do anything at all other than sulk and wish they were dead, this is not the way someone should live. There should be some way to take someone out of this depressive state or to keep someone from ever reaching it but what? The answer is organized sports and their ability to kick start hormones in the body and allow for a new sense of happiness within the body. To find out the depression levels of the participants and see if physical activity effects all participants with different levels of depression or only participates of low levels of depression, we will use a beck depression scale to test the levels of the participants throughout the study. This is important because it will help to bring about a new way to keep a large amount of people away from depression because we know the effects of physical activity on society in order keep depression at a controllable rate. Purpose of the Study The purpose of my study to find out if participating in sports helps to reduce the levels of depression in college students. I am hoping to find out if there is a relationship between playing a sport and controlled levels of depression in college students, so that depression can be controlled and monitored in an inexpensive way. Its roots have prehistoric origins and have been played for over 3,000 years, even older than recorded history of Ireland, which is its national game of play. The history itself of hurling is longer than the Bible and often unclear. Nonetheless hurling is an incredible sport full of rich history and a truly rigorous sport. Since hurling is not a well–known sport to us Americans, I'm going to give a brief background of the sport and how it is played. Hurling is an outdoor team game; each team consists of 15 players on the field aka "Hurlers". The field of play is relatively the same shape of a rugby field but just a bit larger: 140–160 yards long and 90–100 yards wide (Hurling GAA). Scoring is a mix of American football and soccer. At each end of the field are an H–shaped goalpost; the soccer type goal and a field goal type extension on top of that. If the ball (sliotar) is struck inside the bottom net, that team is rewarded three points, if the ball is struck and goes in–between the top field goal posts the team gets one point. The equipment of the game consists of a ball, sliotar that is roughly the size of a baseball but with raised ridges. The stick called a hurley, roughly 40 inches long, shaped like a field hockey stick is curved outwards at the end to provide a larger striking surface for the player. These laws were enforced in an attempt to promote emigration to areas like the United States and Australia. All the outcomes of the Famine were not necessarily negative. One such incentive was modernization. According to Garvin, "Ireland has been a modernizing society since the Famine, and the tragedy of the Famine was itself the occasion of a great modernizing change" (469). The demand for an institution of education was in order. To answer the demand would eventually lead to, "The Gaelic League, the dominant institution of the third revival," (Hutchinson 484) with the second revival being the Irish Protestant/ Catholic liberation of 1829. With the loss of so many people, religion became a large part of the community. Such a devastating event left the Irish vulnerable to outside influences, especially the British. A powerful nation could easily push its culture, society, and government on a weak country like Ireland in the mid to late 1800s. To counter the British, religion took on a stronghold on Irish living. The Catholic Church, through the work of dedicated priests throughout the southern regions of Ireland, grew in popularity and even united small rural towns. This action rebuilt trust in communities and aided the most devastated of areas. The major Christian groups, Irish Protestants and Catholics, would be among the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Cause for Action Essay Cause for Action Imagine a country where a person's belongings could be taken at any moment and then given to someone else for no apparent reason. Likewise, that same person's culture, their way of life, would be disregarded, and they would be forced to use a new language and adapt to a different culture. After the culture is done away with, those who remember it die off rapidly. Even with the declining culture, religious persecution becomes apparent along with the long political conflicts. This very incident occurred at the end of the 19th century. It happened in Ireland to the Gaelic culture, but a man by the name of Douglas Hyde wasn't about to let his culture disappear. Thus the Gaelic League was created. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Irish then tried to immigrate to America. • 79. Similarities And Differences Between The Scottish And... Even though there are many similarities between the Scottish and Irish cultures, there are also many differences. For one, the Scottish have trouble defining what Scottish culture is, this is because they joined the UK at a very early time. Because of this, much of Scottish culture has joined together with English culture. This could be seen when we were walking around Glasgow and saw many English Art and sculptures, as well as walking around the Holyrood house in Edenborough. And now that Scotland may break away from England, the people cling to fantasy and mystery, as well as their own accomplishments to create and define Scottish culture. In Glasgow, the Peoples Palace displayed many accomplishments of the cities people, all stating that they were the first to invent this and the first to do that. Instead of looking back, the city showed how it was progressive and urged its people to move forward. In Edenborough, the tour guide talked about how they were the first to invent skyscrapers and other architecture. Instead of talking about how the country moved forward as a whole, each city talked about how they moved forward and the people in it. Scotland has also clung to many mythological and fantasy ideals. For one, the national animal of Scotland is the Unicorn, which is a mythological creature. Also, during the ghost tour I took around Edenborough, the Scottish believe that they invented Halloween and the city is filled with ghost stories. Even in the north, Loch ...
