Mark Edmundson Influence On Modern Education
From the days before the enduring reign of Queen Victoria to the modern era of Mark Edmundson,
education has played a vital role in the shaping of history. While the knowledge taught in
universities progressively expands, Edmundson would argue that universities are allowing students
too much control over how and what they learn. As someone who had very little control over her
own education, Queen Victoria would appreciate the opportunities granted to modern students.
Dating back to Queen Victoria's early developmental years, she learned under the system, created by
her mother and her mother's advisor, coined the Kensington System. The system provided a "liberal
education in music, drawing, natural philosophy, history, and foreign languages,"

Modern Day Bullying And Its Effect On Education
Modern Day Bullying and Its Effect on Education
Dominique Rollins
Catawba College Modern Day Bullying and Its Effect on Education
The current definition of a "bully," is listed as "a blustering browbeating person; especially: one
habitually cruel to others who are weaker," (Merriam–Webster, n.d.). Over the past 15 years, the
term "bullying" has changed from a word that describes what was once perceived as children and
teenagers making and playing harmless jokes and pranks on each other, to a word that describes the
relentless harassment and sometimes violence that individuals are subjected to at various life stages.
Despite the fact that bullying can affect and involve more than just students, it is most prevalent
among the school age population. Unfortunately, this also means that there are deep rooted ties to
violence and suicide amongst youth in America. There are many contributors to such behavior, some
of which have only yet to be explored as we are at the forefront of what is considered to be the
digital age. However, bullying is not a new age idea exclusive to the 21st century. One of the earliest
documented examples of bullying, where that specific term is mentioned, is in the August 6th, 1862
publication of The Times (London). In the paper, the writer makes reference to the act of bullying as
it related to a soldier's death. The soldier was killed by a 21 year old soldier named John Flood, who
was the victim of "long, malignant and systematic bullying,"

What Are The Flaws Of Modern Education
Flaws of Modern Education "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change
the world." –Nelson Mandela. An undisputed leader of all Africans has just gave us a a small
glimpse of how powerful education can be. As every corner of the world progresses and develops
through globalization, there are more "educated" people in the world than ever before. However, is
the "most powerful weapon" being used correctly? I believe not. Public education is one of the best
inventions of the modern era. Regardless of sex, race, or money, everyone is given the same
education. Genius. Education thrived for who knows how long, but now we have today. Things are
seemingly going downhill and getting worse. Like a snowball gaining speed and size ... Show more

The truth that nobody wants to face is that our educational system is archaic. The wrong things are
being taught and the self–centered grading system is corrupting our youth. Therefore modern
education is have negative impact on the students. First of all, our education system is outdated. The
very education system that is being used today emerged during the Industrial Revolution, when there
were rumbling factories and child labor everywhere. Only few changes were made (they weren't
even good changes), meaning modern education is still designed to cater the needs of that time. It is
evident; more importance is assigned on some subjects while other subjects are completely pushed
out of the realm. The dominating subject is still mathematics, followed by languages, sciences,
humanities and the arts. Exactly what the Industrial Revolution needs. This still remains standing
today because nobody has the guts, power or determination to adjust the curriculum so it is more
adequate for modern society. Furthermore, families are digging at alternatives constantly.
Homeschooling, private schooling and religious schooling are all words rooted from the desperate
attempts of parents to figure it out for their child. What went wrong? Wasn't there

The Reflection Of Education And Values Of The Modern...
Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work
or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views
human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education?
These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies):
Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith.
The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is
and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned
with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect
being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's
imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern
secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its
"religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or
rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities.
Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the main
claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute our
identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement

The And The Modern Education System
If the body and the mind are considered as a unity, it would be unwise to ignore the importance of
the body. However, that is exactly the case with the modern education system. To prepare their
students for tomorrow's world, many schools and teachers try to develop students' minds by
increasing the required course work and the amount of standardized tests. However, they worsen a
student's body condition by depriving him/her of the time to play and exercise. In "The Play
Deficit," the Dr. Gray believes that "the decline in opportunity to play has been accompanied by a
decline in empathy and a rise in narcissism" (Gray). Playing is a physical experience that develops
the body and the mental capacity to understand other people. The lack of ... Show more content on

Physical education enhances the mind through giving students a healthier body, but many schools
have overlooked this fact. Carlson's and Gray's ideas are also well connected to the concept of
mindful learning. In "Mindful Learning," Langer discusses how applying mindfulness to learning
processes can free our brains from forming a mindset that limits our ideas. We can justify Dr. Gray's
argument using the ideas of mindful learning. Dr. Gray believes that playing is learning, as children
can learn many life lessons when they are enjoying their time. Langer explains mindful learning by
suggesting that "tasks are inherently good or bad. To get through the bad ones, we should look
forward to the good ones, or perhaps 'add a little sugar to help the medicine go down'" (222). If
having fun is the good task, and learning academic lessons is the bad task, then playing is exactly
the "sugar" that helps the learning process. When people are doing what they like, engagement in
these tasks leads to mindful learning. In addition to Gray's ideas, we can also see how Carlson's
argument is closely related to mindful learning. Carlson suggests that lack of exercise can lead to
passive experience in learning. Meanwhile, Langer suggests that, contrary to mindfulness, the
process of mindless learning occurs in passive learning as

One of Howard Gardner 's eight multiple intelligences , bodily kinesthetic intelligence involves the
ability to hold objects, body control and coordination. Possession of bodily kinesthetic intelligence
means an individual can initiate body movements in concert with thoughts, feelings, and ideas.
Sports activities (for example baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc.) as well as dance, mime,
drama, and martial arts require this ability. Bodily kinesthetic intelligence needs to be developed and
must not be sacrificed in favor of verbal linguistic intelligence and logical mathematical
intelligence, which most schools today heavily emphasize in their curriculum and assessments.

A behaviorist believes that instruction is fostered by observable, measurable, and controllable

could also be trained to respond in a specific manner displayed in set of behavioral outcomes.

America vs Language
In the article, Speak Spanish, You're in America!: El Huracan over language and Culture, Juan
Gonzalez, a journalist and broadcaster of the daily show, Democracy Now, describes how
bilingualism has impacted the United States' modern education system. He describes an amendment
that would constitute English as the official in the United States, which he believes can be a
potential threat to the educational system. Gonzalez suggests that instead of having an amendment
that constitutes English as the national language, American schools should implement Spanish to
highlight the importance of being bilingualism in the American educational system. A constitutional
amendment declaring English as the national language would be damaging to bilingual students
because it would limit their capability of communicating in English or their native language, and
therefore they have would fall behind in classes and will not succeed in the American educational
system. To highlight the importance of bilingualism, even more the educational system should
implement a variety of languages.
It is beneficial for bilingual students to be taught in both their native language and in English to
assimilate with ease into the American educational system. Gonzalez demonstrates how Native
Americans, especially the Cherokees implemented English in their curriculum while also teaching
them their own language. This form of teaching did not only teach

Pros And Cons Of Modern Education
E Education Modern education stands for using computers or internet websites to educate students
in schools and colleges about any kind of a learning course. According to some people nowadays the
word modern education is considered to be a synonym to the word "ease", while to others it is
considered as an improvement to teaching and learning skills. Technology is gradually developing
by the day that now we embrace computers and tablets in offices and schools more than books. In
additional to teachers who mostly use projectors to display videos or designed programs which grab
the attention of their students in classes. But apparently along with all the advantages modern
education has, it also has disadvantages such as effecting a student's health state or how it may cause
a student to rely on the internet rather than his own intelligence and creativity. Since this is a
debatable topic, this research paper will involve arguments about modern education pros and cons

How Stratification Is Alive And Well Throughout Modern...
When thinking about society we are able to see a clear distinction between groups that are clearly
more advantaged or disadvantaged than other groups. In modern society, these advantages and
disadvantages are not always by design, but they fall back into a deeper more stratified system in
which everyone has become part of today. There are some things that happen subconsciously that
make someone seem better than another person or ways of thinking that because of the past have
forced us to think the way that we do currently. Stratification is everywhere, from our personal life,
jobs, networks and even schools. There are a magnitude of factors that play into our life that help us
decide what we want to do and factors that decide what we might or might not be able to do. In this
paper, I want to focus on how the idea of stratification is alive and well in modern education and
futures of those attending secondary education.
First off I want to ask the questions, what do you as the reader first think about when you hear the
name Purdue University? Is it the stellar engineering programs or maybe the veterinarian school?
What about athletics? When the name Purdue is brought up does it make you think of the long
streak of losing seasons of the football team or the uprising basketball program? All of these things
are important and they lead into the stratification of Purdue University. It's impossible to deny that
Purdue is a great school for a lot of different reasons and each of

Sex Education Is An Important Class Modern Day Society
Sex education is an important class in modern day society. Many adolescents today are surrendering
their virginity at very young ages. Therefore, teens need to be informed about all the risks that may
accompany participation in sexual intercourse. These classes can help decrease the number of STD
cases and teen pregnancies each year as well as encourage teens to have "safe sex" if they choose to
engage in it at all.* Sex education classes are valuable because they help teens realize the
devastating risk of diseases that can be a consequence of sex, advise students to have safe sex if they
are going to partake in it, and warns them of the risky probability of the female becoming pregnant
as a result. Partaking in sexual intercourse puts that person at risk for multiple STD's depending on
the sexual history of both partners. Diseases of this variety, like any other, often are accompanied by
horrible life–long repercussions. "An STD is any disease that is spread primarily by sexual contact,"
says About Health. There are a variety of known STD's, but some of the more common ones are:
Chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, and Herpes/HSV. "Chlamydia is the most common curable STD," says
About Health. This painful disease concerns the female's cervix and male's penile urethra. This STD
is incredibly common because some people don't display any symptoms for, sometimes, very long
periods of time. Some profound symptoms that one may experience are: pain during intercourse and

scale for the system, which assigns people a number based on their intelligence and aptitude and

intelligence of the average American, not just the most elite, is aggressively driven by innovations
melding together education and recreation that encompass the lives of nearly every person and
challenge his mental dexterity as he keeps up with the schooling and entertainment of exponentially
increasing complexity (Gladwell). These innovations in entertainment manifest themselves as
television and video games. Video gamers are thrown into a world which is entirely different than
their own, with its own sets of rules and challenges, and are then expected to make sense of it,
perform tasks, solve problems, and do it all in a manner which is better than the other players around
the globe with whom they compete. They must construct their own set of hypotheses, test them, and
then continue on to create and order a set of steps in a plan of execution (Gladwell). Likewise,
modern television shows have become unprecedentedly complicated, following several intertwining
plotlines and sometimes more than a dozen characters that, together, form a complex, intricate web
of relations for the viewer to decipher (Gladwell). In addition to making sense of the plot, viewers

Similarities Between Elizabethan And Modern Education
Elizabethan and Modern Education
The Elizabethan Era, the "Golden Age" of English history, ended with the death of Queen Elizabeth
I, but its approach to education lingered centuries beyond that. During the Elizabethan times,
education was completely dependent upon a person's social status and gender, as well as the whims
of the sitting monarch. Although that is not the case anymore, similarities can be drawn between
Elizabethan and modern education. In fact, Elizabethan education and modern education share more
similarities than differences.
The first similarity is that there were many different levels of education. Students learned how to
read and write in English and how to do sums, in what was known as a 'Petty School', the most
elementary level of education ("What Every Schoolboy Knows."). These were not actually schools.
A 'Petty School' was actually the house of an educated housewife who would teach children for a
small price ("Elizabethan Era England Life."). Along with learning how to read and write in English,
they also learned catechism and lessons on behavior ("Elizabethan Era England Life."). From the
ages 7 to 14, children who were non–noble went to Grammar Schools, which prepared them for
university, where courses were taught in Latin. Latin was considered the "language of the educated"
throughout Europe, so students were expected to become proficient in it ("What Every Schoolboy
Knows.").
Between the ages of 7 and 10, they were taught by Ushers, who taught them parts of speech, verbs,
sentence structure, and how to translate English to Latin ("Elizabethan Era Daily Life: Food,
Education, Marriage, Family, Fashion."). During this time, they were taught with the Horn–Book
and the Elizabethan Alphabet. The Horn Book was considered to be the "most important tool" used
in the Grammar Schools. It was a piece of parchment that was normally pasted onto a wooden board
with a handle, and covered with a plate of transparent horn, which made it both durable and
inexpensive. The horn–book displayed the alphabet in both small and capital letters, and the Lord's
Prayer in English. The mark of the cross was also included, so the alphabet was known as
"Christcross–row" ("Elizabethan Education.").

The Importance Of Education In Modern Society
Education is not as highly implemented as it is in our modern society. As mentioned before, each
tracker has 5 compartments in which people can purchase KCs (Knowledge Chips) but at a rather
high price. You can choose to go to school and it serves to get a better job, although, there is a very
small guarantee you will move up to a higher class. There is an exam that basically determines your
whole future, fail it, and you do not have any chance of taking it again or proving what you're worth.
This exam consists of basic knowledge and how to apply skills to their modern society. An example
of what happens in this exam is that is passed, they get brainwashed and gets their family into a
higher class with them as well. There is always a catch with everything that is beneficial to their
society because they want to keep the number of Golds and high class people to a minimum. School
is also mainly focused on teaching the morals of respect and family but also tries to make all
enrolled students to be happy in what social class they are in. Once in a high class or a part of the
Golds, the former adults and students do not receive any more education because there is no way to
go down the social scale. This is the very reason why after education has been part of their lives,
they can brainwashed. The society does not permit anyone moving down the scale because that is
just an insult to them. If a family proves to be inadequate for their social class, they are publicly

Learning must be "constructed" through opportunities to interact with sensory things so they can
develop a personal understanding of the world around them. Therefore learning must be an active
process. These theorists also emphasize the importance of language in learning. Constructivists
believe in the social element of learning where a child seeks to understand their peers' view of the

so there is a need to develop a sense of meaning, application and purpose. One of Howard Gardner 's

their safety in the face of such random rage. We will build barricades, and we will take precautions,

theme that is addressed by the authors of three books covered in this class is that teachers sacrifice
everything for their students. Teachers sacrifice their safety, their free time, and the amount of
money they could earn someplace else to support the next generation of leaders learning to write

young students." In Finland, teachers sacrifice their free time to work hard for their students giving

teachers sacrifice to protect students from "bullies, and bad words and bad thoughts and bad self–

The Importance Of Feminism In Modern Education
Modern education is changing faster than we can keep up with it. There are things being retracted
and things being added very quickly. Education in modern times, tends to flow with the times,
meaning whatever major controversy there is, it's talked about in modern education. Feminism is a
very controversial topic that teachers and staff alike, are trying to get embedded into our education
patterns. What exactly is feminism? Well it really depends on what site you've read it off of but the
dictionary definition is, the advocacy for women's rights based on the equality of the sexes. There
can be many pro's and con's to having feminism taught in our education, but there is higher
likelihood of a negative outcome if we were to do so. Feminism is very subjective movement. It's so
complex that it often gets taken out of context and turned into something it is not. Having modern
education embed feminism into their courses, could end disastrously. With feminism being such a
subjective movement, people need to be able to gain their own perspective on what feminism is.
Annie Dillard is an essayist who toys with an idea that we grown up with everyone's perspective on
things, so we cannot make a judgement or give a name to the things that we see. Dillard proclaims "I
couldn't unpeach the peaches"(Dillard 51). If we are told what feminism is, we will never know
anything different. You cannot talk about feminism without biased opinions present because every

students in their sleep and give them a nightmare. To understand what I am writing just study your

Standardized testing has become an important part of our modern education. There is not an
American student who doesn't sit down these test many times a year in their educational journey.
These tested are heavily monitored, they are supposed to measure students' knowledge and
performance. However, there are may problems with standardized tests, including bais, anxiety and

scholars have talked about the role of standardized tests in students performance. The answer is no.
Standardized tests do not measure student 's education or knowledge. The topic of standardized
testing is complex in that it provokes a system that has been established for a long time and that is
used by every college and school in United States. Many people believe that standardized tests are
biased and aren't inclusive while others argue that they are effective in testing student's knowledge.
This topic also proposes a big change to our educational system.

Emerson's Theories of Education vs Modern-day Theories Essay
Emerson and today's theories of education view discipline as necessary for the progress of students
in the classroom; however, Emerson's beliefs differ from modern–day theories of discipline in
"respecting a child" encompassing "patience", "the receiving mind" and "discovers for himself his
goal in life." Emerson realized that progressive learning is not a dictator relationship. "Respecting a
child" will enhance the student's ability to achieve their goals.
As today's society lives in the fast lane so does our educational society. "So to regard a young child,
the young man, requires, no doubt, rare patience: a patience that nothing but faith in the remedial
forces of the soul can give" (Gilman 444). Patience is this unattainable trait ... Show more content

In Emerson's words we are just creating "parrots" (Gilman 229). Also, due to limited time, the pace
is very assertive. It appears the "No child left behind" act is leaving many students behind. Emerson
would be the first person to criticize this new legislation. It is a type of learning that is dictated by
the government on their own pace.
The need to succeed hinders students from finding their true potential. For years, headlines have
read "American students are behind other international students." In Gerald W. Bracey's article, Are
U.S. Students Behind?: "American students look better in international tests than the critics would
have us believe, and the schools have little to do with the "competitiveness" of economy" (Bracey
1). The government is pressuring students to do better than other country counter parts for no other
reason than to fulfill their own agenda. "One reason why Americans believe their children compare
poorly to foreign students is that for 12 years, the Reagan and Bush administration promoted a
conservative agenda hostile to the public schools and gave bad news about education far more
publicity than good news" (Bracey 2). This was a result from the race between the Russians and
Americans in the space program. The government's own agenda abolished the whole concept of
being patient with students.

An Overview of Modern Philosophies of Education
Overview
Philosophy means "love of wisdom." It is made up of two Greek words, philo, meaning love, and
sophos, meaning wisdom. Philosophy helps teachers to reflect on key issues and concepts in
education, usually through such questions as: What is being educated? What is the good life? What
is knowledge? What is the nature of learning? And What is teaching? Philosophers think about the
meaning of things and interpretation of that meaning. Even simple statements, such as "What should
be learned? Or What is adolescence?" set up raging debates that can have major implications. For
example, what happens if an adolescent commits a serious crime? One interpretation may hide
another. If such a young person is treated as an adult criminal, what ... Show more content on

Plato also believed that the soul is fully formed prior to birth and is perfect and at one with the
Universal Being. The birth process checks this perfection, so education requires bringing latent ideas
(fully formed concepts) to consciousness.
In idealism, the aim of education is to discover and develop each individual's abilities and full moral
excellence in order to better serve society. The curricular emphasis is subject matter of mind:
literature, history, philosophy, and religion. Teaching methods focus on handling ideas through
lecture, discussion, and Socratic dialogue (a method of teaching that uses questioning to help
students discover and clarify knowledge). Introspection, intuition, insight, and whole–part logic are
used to bring to consciousness the forms or concepts which are latent in the mind. Character is
developed through imitating examples and heroes.
Pragmatism –is the philosophy of considering practical consequences or real effects to be vital
components of meaning and truth. Pragmatism is generally considered to have originated in the late
nineteenth century with Charles Pierce, who first stated the pragmatic maxim. It came to fruition in
the early twentieth–century philosophies of William James and John Dewey and, in a more
unorthodox manner, in the works of George Santayana. Other important aspects of pragmatism
include anti–Cartesianism, radical empiricism,

Compare Modern Education In China With The Educational...
1. Compare modern education in China with the educational system prior to 1911. What are the key
similarities and differences between the two?
There have been a lot of educational reforms over the years in which it can be traced as far back as
far as the Shang Dynasty. Education is necessary as it lead to wealth and success, so it was and still
is important to the Chinese people, in the past and now. Which is a similarity, education has always
been valued by the people. There was a plan to reform to increase public education and rebuild the
society. In 1911, the difference was that the government was completely forsaken towards the
traditional way of education. Historically, there was a pattern to divide china and the educational
system between private and official, in which there was a purpose to train students to be better.
2. Using Zhang Yimou's film Not One Less, identify challenges that a migrant from the country to
the city might encounter.
One challenge would be that since it is such a long journey and there isn't a lot of money for
transportation, it typically takes around a month for a migrant to go to the city. They need to find
someone to take care of their jobs or other needs that need to be taken care of while they are gone.
In the case of the video, the teacher had to find a young girl to teach the class while he was gone.
She was inexperienced and didn't have very many talents of her own.
Another challenge that they would have is that they would be very unfamiliar with the city lifestyle.
When the young girl reaches the city she looks to be intrigued with how much is going on compared
to what she had in her village. Also, everything in the city is more expensive for them coming from
poverty.
3. Identify three challenges faced by rural schools in China. Discuss three realistic ways that these

There are a lot of challenges that students and teachers have to face in rural schools in China.
Teachers are very hard to find because a lot of them are not educated. Overtime this can be solved as
more children are going to school and are getting an education. Since education is very hard to get,

Mark Edmundson On The Uses Of Modern Education Summary
On the Criticisms of Modern Education
There are courses that students take in order to earn credit, and most require essays. Each essay that
is submitted is expected to follow a set of rules, with students obligated to follow these rules and to
create an end product that encompasses the expectations set forth by their teacher. The following
summary and response to Mark Edmundson's work follows most of the rules, though it may not
meet expectations set forth by a single teacher. Some risks are worth taking, even if it may seem to
jeopardize the educational path students feel obliged to follow. Using his experiences with students
who follow rules, Edmundson makes many misguided judgments about the passions, individuality,
and educational decisions of students.
"On the Uses of a Liberal Education" by Mark Edmundson examines the relationship between the
ways of college students and the society they are involved in. He states that students lack passion
and avoid taking educational chances to challenge themselves. Edmundson also has the idea that all
of his students, except for a few outliers, are cowardly and unwilling to pursue higher paths of
education. According to Edmundson, the universities are to blame; the main purpose of the
universities being to appease the wants and needs of students. This consumer culture created by
universities is unknowingly perpetuated by the students who wish to attend. Edmundson concludes
with ideas of how to improve this relationship:

Equilibrium And Education : The Modern Day American Society
Equilibrium in Education
Throughout American history, there has been waves of different economic standpoints. From the
thriving economy in the early 1900s, to the infamous downfall of the stock market that lead to the
Great Depression in the 1930s. America has always faced different obstacles that has shaped the
modern day American society. Poverty levels have increased rapidly which sparked interest in some
organizations to create a campaign called "Do Something", which advocates improving American
lives through better education and higher quality of living. One statistic given was that, "In 2011,
nearly 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty" (11 Facts). With many occupations requiring
some type of post–secondary education. How can the quality of life be improved if a myriad of
people are facing such high levels of poverty and cannot afford the cost of that higher education?
Obstacles in obtaining an education beyond high school come from the prejudice in education by
making it affordable to those with the ability to pay the out of pocket costs. Social inequality has
kept people who reside in the lower income classes from progressing through a higher education . It
is prevalent that in American history, that those who are privileged white men can obtain a higher
education than one who is a minority. Post–secondary education must be made accessible to all in
order to ensure that everyone has equal access to a higher quality of life. Post secondary education

Modern Teaching : Maria Montesori And Modern Education
Maria Montessori and Modern Education
Imagine straight rows of large desks and chairs, students taking notes and memorizing information,
and a teacher standing in front of a blackboard, loftily lecturing students and demanding their
obedience. More than likely, you pictured a classroom of older students, perhaps in a high school or
college classroom. Now replace these students with 6 year olds and imagine what it would feel like
to sit and listen for hours, powerless next to the authority of a strict teacher. This was the case before
Maria Montessori changed the way that teachers viewed and taught students. Now, think about what
educating young children looks like in a modern elementary school classroom. You probably
pictured a group of kindergarteners sitting on small chairs at a short table, building with blocks or
counting beads. These children love school, because their teacher creates an environment that builds
upon their natural desire to learn. This improved method of teaching children is thanks to
Montessori's principles on educating students by advancing their natural curiosity and desire to
learn. Maria Montessori's perseverance, desire to learn how to effectively engage students, and
discovery of the natural ways that students learn reflect teaching methods that continue to benefit
students today.
Maria was a student unwilling to abide by the gender limitations of her time. Montessori's desire to

Zen Buddhist Perspectives On Modern Education
Zen Buddhist Perspectives on Modern Education
ABSTRACT: Many articles and books on Buddhism have been published in recent years, but
publications dealing with Buddhist educational views are rarely available. In this paper, I wish to
expound on Zen Buddhist perspectives on modern education. The history of Buddhist education is
long and complex. In early centuries (400 BCE– 800 CE), Buddhist monasteries in India and China
functioned as educational centers where vinaya, sutras and other subjects were taught. Many men
and women were refugees from social injustice and the sangha provided them with education,
security and dignity. Spirituality and pedantry were always combined in Buddhist education. But

– 800 A.D.) The second section will deal with Zen Buddhist views on modern education. In this
effort, the following questions will be addressed: i) What is the meaning of education in Zen
Buddhism ? and ii) How can Zen Buddhism assist modern education? I shall interpolate typical Zen
positions with non–technical observations in order to balance between scholarly and non–scholarly
views. The third section will present a conclusion of this paper.
I Monasteries
The history of education is long and complex. In ancient Egypt and India, for instance, education
consisted mainly of the study of morality, astrology, and religious knowledge. The availability of
education in that period was limited to rulers, administrators, soldiers, and priests. In fact, only the
elite received education. However, the availability of education gradually changed in Asia and
Europe, as more people, included commoners, gained access to education. In India, even
untouchables and women were permitted to join Buddhist sangha (community) and were given
opportunities to study; many oppressed individuals sought a safety net in sangha. For the first time,
around the fourth century B.C., in India, some Buddhists defied the rigid caste system, as
monasteries sprung up in many parts of India. Monasteries offered a communal life in which monks
and nuns studied vinaya (the rules of monastic life), and they

Roman Education In Modern America
Education provides people with knowledge and social skills, and ensures that the future of a society
will be successful. Education was crucial to the success of Rome. "Education in Ancient Rome was
very different in modern America because often parents were their teachers, students were expected
to pass on traditional customs and attitudes, and only a small number of people were educated." To
begin with in early Rome, parents were their children's teachers, the aim of early education was to
initiate children into the Roman way of life, to pass on traditional values, to engender respect for
these values, and to begin to make of children model citizens. Education depended on how much
money you had. Many rich boys and girls had the easy way

The Importance Of Modern Education
As children, the government required us to attend school to receive an education. This is because
there are certain skills that schools have to teach in order for us to work properly as part of society.
Society is evolving because we as people are changing rapidly. We need to reconsider what schools
need to teach. Modern education needs to include lifestyle skills in their curricula in order to help
the students function properly. Time management is important because it will improve our decision–
making ability, reduce stress, and do more. First and foremost, time management is important in
one's life. Learning how to manage our time will allow us to do more in a shorter time. Feeling
pressed for time, we usually jump to conclusions; we do not usually consider every option. If we
were able to manage our time, we would not feel pressed, this allows us to fully consider every
option and by doing this your chances of making a bad decision will diminish. Poorly managing
your time leads to feeling rushed, needing to do five things makes you feel like it is one hundred.
Proper time management allows you to clearly see which tasks will take a certain amount of your
time. Since it reduces stress, good time management also leads to accomplishing more. This is
because the lack of feeling overwhelmed improves your ability to focus, and therefore allows you to
work more efficiently. Schools should teach this at an early age in order for the students to be well

The Limitations Of Modern Education
"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it
today."– Malcolm X
Have you ever taken a second to think about our modern day education? Or considered that state–
controlled curriculum has limitations regarding our education and our society's intelligence as a
whole. When we first begin kindergarten, to our senior year of high school challenges are testing our
intelligence by issuing standardized test, and we are oblivious to. As a high school student, I felt
intrigued to learn more.
When our Founding Fathers' first came to America, the people were in charge of their education and
this is how our country functioned. This caused many to start private schools, picking their tutors,
and teaching their children. As you can see, this was open and free. This system worked for them at
the time, in fact, the literacy level was as high as 97% in the North and 81% in the South. (How Did
Government Get So Involved in Education, 2008). This sort of system was in place for the first fifty
to seventy–five years of our nation's first known establishment. Nevertheless, providing an
alternative was what reformers aimed to do. A well–known individual part of this went by the name
of Horace Mann and was a member of the Massachusetts State Legislature. The light that Mann
wanted to shed to light was that education was "the balance wheel of the social machinery" (Gale,
1998). His purpose was for everyone to have equal opportunities, which would

High Education Is A Modern Day Crisis
Tuition to attend a university or college in America has gradually been increasing making the pursuit
for a degree even more expensive than before. The escalation of the affordability of seeking a higher
education is a modern day crisis! A college degree is very important in today's fields predominantly
due to the increase in competition for a job. Degrees are viewed as a requirement for a numerous
amount of jobs even though one is not guaranteed work in that field. Compared to other countries
around the world, America has been gradually dwindling down the ranks in student's standardized
test scores in subjects taught in school. Why has this become a trend? The pursuit for a higher
education in America should be free for whoever meets admission standards, as well as maintaining
state requirements to their public college of choice, regardless of the applicant's ability to pay. Yes,
the government offers financial aid to students who qualify for it, but being drowned in an ocean of
debt after graduation is not ideal for anyone and actually discouraging. So why should one even
attend college in the first place? This is an easy question to answer if they have got what it takes to
graduate. Attending college is an investment in your education and statistically has a high return; a
return higher than an investment in the stock market or housing market on average. "According to
the classic investment theory that describes the decision to attend college, individuals weigh the

Calculus As A Part Of Modern Mathematics Education
Calculus (from Latin calculus, literally "small pebble used for counting")[1] is the mathematical
study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of
operations and their application to solving equations. It has two major branches, differential calculus
(concerning rates of change and slopes of curves),[2] and integral calculus (concerning
accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves);[3] these two branches are
related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the
fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well–defined limit.
Generally, modern calculus is considered to have been developed in the 17th century by Isaac
Newton and Gottfried Leibniz. Today, calculus has widespread uses in science, engineering and
economics[4] and can solve many problems that elementary algebra alone cannot.
Calculus is a part of modern mathematics education. A course in calculus is a gateway to other, more
advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of functions and limits, broadly called
mathematical analysis. Calculus has historically been called "the calculus of infinitesimals", or
"infinitesimal calculus". Calculus (plural calculi) is also used for naming some methods of
calculation or theories of computation, such as propositional calculus, calculus of variations, lambda
calculus, and process calculus.

The Importance Of Technology In The Modern Era Of Education
In the modern era of education, technology is held in high esteem with educators, students, and
parents. The innovative waves of instruction are taking a hold on schools across America. Positive
results are being seen. Studies and test scores have proven that progress follows proper
implementation of technology in schools. The outdated practices of using textbooks as primary
information and sitting behind your desk and lecturing are over. Students must be stimulated in a
multitude of ways; however, the most diverse and innovative ways of presenting crucial information
is through technology. Creating lessons in your classroom that are always the same is extremely
selfish and not effective to all students. Technology has given educators the luxury of differentiating
instruction and personalizing it for our students ("The Importance of", March, 2015). Most curricula
have a pacing guide that lists the important topics that are to be taught, but they do not explain how
they must be covered. This gives the teacher opportunity to be themselves and create their own
individuality through classroom instruction and diverse teaching methods. "A study by Educause
found that K–12 and college students prefer to have technology integrated into their curriculum"
("The Importance of", March, 2015). We tend to gravitate to items and practices we are most
comfortable with. Students in today's society have surrounded themselves with technology.

Why Homeschooling Is The Best Education For The Modern...
There truly is no place like one's home. Confucius said, "The strength of a nation derives from the
integrity of the home." The knowledge one gains at home, technically a child 's first classroom, is
the knowledge one will carry with them for the rest of their lives. This is why homeschooling is the
best education for the modern generation. As the value on knowledge increases, making a decision
on a child's educational behalf, in order to give them the best possible future, continues on with
complexity. There's a variety of answers when trying to solve the problem of education, but many
argue that public schooling is the correct answer. Yet one must consider is the most obvious solution

Even though the option of learning to read and write was available, children learned just enough to
handle basic concepts. The effectiveness of homeschooling was not in question during the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some of the most famous writers and inventors received the
majority of their education at home. Thomas Edison, only attended three months of public school,
and was taught mostly by his mother. Other famous homeschoolers include: Benjamin Franklin,
Albert Einstein, Charles Dickens and Alexander Graham Bell. After attendance laws became
effective, America began relying on public and private schools to educate children. Homeschooling
soon became something practiced only by rural families, and within Amish communities. It was rare
during this time for families to homeschool. Although in our modern day society, the National
Center for Education Statistics, the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to
education in the U.S. and other nations estimates, "Millions of students are homeschooled in the
United States" (NCES). Demonstrating that homeschooling is becoming viewed as a reasonable
option for education. More importantly families in the United States are realizing and taking
advantage of the many benefits that come with educating a child in the home.

The Functionalist Explanation of the Role of Education in...
The Functionalist Explanation of the Role of Education in Modern Society
I will discuss the functionalist's theories in comparison to those of the Marxist and Interactionists.
Functionalists believe that all in society serves a purpose and it's a positive function. They also
believe that education is a way of achieving in society; it develops people so that it gives them the
opportunities in society (workplace). Durkheim believed that in order for children to feel as though
they belong in society and for society to work, the education system will enable people to belong to
society for example the teaching of certain subjects (transmission of cultural capital) i.e. history, will

Also that school prepares pupils for their place in society through the correspondence theory. Karl
Marx believed that there were only two classes the Bourgeoisies – ruling class and the Proletariat –
working class. He argued that the education system is a way in which people become alienated into
accepting capitalism and are unaware of their exploitation (False consciousness)
Other Marxist, Bowles and Gintis believe that the teachers give the orders and the pupils obey. Also
that education legitimates social inequality by broadcasting the myth that it offers all equal
opportunities, where this is not the case at all. Vocational courses benefited the working class as it
trained them and educated them with more skills so that they are able to earn a higher wage in the
workplace.
Just as the Functionalist view were criticised as are Bowles and Gintis for portraying children as
some sort of animals. Teachers are seen as the agents and pipils as the victims. This proves that
Marxist views differ to that of the Functionalists. Although there is a similarity as both
Functionalists and Marxists link education and the workplace (both structures of macro theories)
together and of the values of society, but socializes children into possessing false consciousness
about the world.
Interactionists deal with the issues

Education Is The Most Modern Means Of Learning
I have formulated a philosophy of teaching statement with the foundation that that the student is the
center of attention. My philosophy is also in–line with Merriam and Brockett (2009), where
according to them, the progressive philosophy is where it places more value in knowledge derived
from observation and experience than it does from tradition and authority (p. 35). In this respect, I
believe that study and knowledge is critical to solving a problem or correcting a situation within
adult education. Online courses are now starting to prevail over traditional college education and my
vision for future education derives on the idea that companies and businesses will start directing
education institutions with material that are in–line with such businesses.
Vision of future education Online education is the most modern means of learning. As technology
advances, educators, students and companies will be able to tailor their curriculum based on the
needs of the student's future goals that align with the companies or businesses they are prepping for.
Companies will sponsor courses and create a skilled workforce for specific positions in that
company. The online learning environment will refer to the stimulus provided to the students for
learning through the company's needs. Razik and Swanson state that now is a time when educational
institutions require intelligent, informed, imaginative, creative, and effective leadership (p. 3). I

Education is the only device by which the contemporary society may be moulded to meet the current
challenges. With women forming fifty percent of the entire population, it is essential that they match
their strides with the male population. Only then can a nation advance. Keeping this in mind, many
of the developing nations are allocating a quarter of their national budget to education; some of them
even more. (Venkataiah, 2001)A host of problems have however kept these countries from achieving
their goal. A major problem faced by most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the Muslim period, the purdah system was in vogue. Consequently the girls did not go to the
Madrasas like the boys, to receive education. Still, it cannot be maintained that there was total lack
of female education during the Muslim period. The example of Nurjahan is testimony of the fact that
arrangement for the education of ladies of the royal family was made in the palace. Some of the girls
belonging to the Royal families having an artistic inclination received education through 'Ustads',
who went to the palace regularly to impart instructions. The daughters of the gentry were also
educated individually at home. No separate arrangements were made either by the Government or
by the society and hence it had a very limited scope. (Chaube & Chaube, 1999).
Though education is the most vital and potent instrument for individual and social development and
progress, women have been kept away from it in India from the medieval period to advent of
missionaries in India. It was only with the coming of the Christian Missionaries that an attempt was
made to revive female education in India. By the middle of the nineteenth century, some progressive
Indians and Englishmen started working for their reawakening. According to the

Modern World 's Education System
In History Begins at Sumer, Kramer informs us about how Sumerians lived during 2000 B.C. He
discusses different topics such as education, justice, medicine, and many more. The book mainly
focuses on Sumer but as you read you start to notice that our world and Sumerian world are similar.
It's an eye opener to how everything we do came about and where it all started. The part we don't
actually know is how Sumerians came up with their way of living. Many may assume that their
ancient world is so different but after reading History Begins at Sumer they would later realize the
similarities outweighs the differences. Kramer wrote that Sumerians and modern humans are
fundamentally analogous, comparable, and reciprocally illuminating (Kramer, 259). Which he's
basically saying that our worlds are obviously different but at the same time extremely similar. His
book persuades you to have the same thought process. Kramer wrote about the education system in
the ancient Sumerian world which happens to sound a little like modern world's education system.
The school has one main focus and that was to teach scribes to write in Sumerian language (Kramer,
6). Student had to remember then recite what they've learned in a tablet which later became
textbooks. They spent most of their day in school and like modern humans spent multiple years in
school. We are in school from the age 6 to whenever we decide to be done. Sumerians according to
History Begins at Sumer stayed in school from an early

What Are The Flaws Of Modern Education
Education is one of, if not the most vital part of life. However, as David Kearns, the CEO for Xerox
once said "Our large schools are organized like a factory of the late 19th century: top down,
command control management, a system designed to stifle creativity and independent judgment."
This quote helps to highlight the many flaws in modern education, which include seeking to hinder
the development of deep thoughts and character. The system of education present in modern day
America was established with an industrial mindset of each student serving the same purpose in
society, and fails to accommodate the changing times, in which people have differing views, likes,

Now, many adults see homework, and this strict schedule school makes a student follow as
beneficial. However to put it bluntly, it harms a student much more than it helps. It does get a
student ready for the structure and demands of their adult lives, but that experience shouldn't cost a
student their time to develop themselves and grow as a person, and develop the character Dr. King
said is a vital part of true education; the lack of which highlights one of the many flaws in the
modern educational system. Aside from forcing students to improperly allocating their time, another
major flaw in modern education is its focus on uniformity. School allows for things to be
accomplished one way, and one way only. Predictably, this causes issues for the number of students
who won't see the problem the way the school wants them to, and so they will be "wrong", because
they didn't seek to follow the uniformity schools preach. For example, standardized testing grades a
student on how well they can retain knowledge. Predictably, again, there will be a number of
students who are brilliant, but are told they are failures simply because they don't learn the way the
school wants them to. Nothing displays this idea better than this Albert Einstein quote, in which he
says "If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life

The Importance Of Responsibility In The Modern Education...
The modern education system effectively utilizes the persistently developing technologies in order
to maintain firm communications with the students' parents. Through automated messages, parents
are regularly notified regarding school attendance, disciplinary action, and report card reminders,
just to name a few. However, a couple generations earlier, the students maintained responsibility for
notifying their parents regarding issues that could range from an out–of–school suspension to a
statewide honor. The growing involvement of the school system in claiming responsibility for the
students' issues results in the decreasing responsibilities that the students have to bear. Such a turn of
events can result in complications regarding the student's overall development, both morally and
socially.
This constant connection between the school and the parent poses a detrimental yet potent threat to
the student's overall development. The establishment of such a connection leaves little to no
responsibility for the student to claim, and considering the fact that school maintains a major role in
the child's early periods, the student is completely deprived from responsibility in his/her life.
Claiming responsibility during one's childhood builds certain necessary attributes and traits that
contributes to the overall development of the individual, of which may include but is not limited to
integrity, love and respect, and determined motivation. Such a deprivation results in weak

Mark Edmundson Influence On Modern Education

  • 1. Mark Edmundson Influence On Modern Education From the days before the enduring reign of Queen Victoria to the modern era of Mark Edmundson, education has played a vital role in the shaping of history. While the knowledge taught in universities progressively expands, Edmundson would argue that universities are allowing students too much control over how and what they learn. As someone who had very little control over her own education, Queen Victoria would appreciate the opportunities granted to modern students. Dating back to Queen Victoria's early developmental years, she learned under the system, created by her mother and her mother's advisor, coined the Kensington System. The system provided a "liberal education in music, drawing, natural philosophy, history, and foreign languages," ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Modern Day Bullying And Its Effect On Education Modern Day Bullying and Its Effect on Education Dominique Rollins Catawba College Modern Day Bullying and Its Effect on Education The current definition of a "bully," is listed as "a blustering browbeating person; especially: one habitually cruel to others who are weaker," (Merriam–Webster, n.d.). Over the past 15 years, the term "bullying" has changed from a word that describes what was once perceived as children and teenagers making and playing harmless jokes and pranks on each other, to a word that describes the relentless harassment and sometimes violence that individuals are subjected to at various life stages. Despite the fact that bullying can affect and involve more than just students, it is most prevalent among the school age population. Unfortunately, this also means that there are deep rooted ties to violence and suicide amongst youth in America. There are many contributors to such behavior, some of which have only yet to be explored as we are at the forefront of what is considered to be the digital age. However, bullying is not a new age idea exclusive to the 21st century. One of the earliest documented examples of bullying, where that specific term is mentioned, is in the August 6th, 1862 publication of The Times (London). In the paper, the writer makes reference to the act of bullying as it related to a soldier's death. The soldier was killed by a 21 year old soldier named John Flood, who was the victim of "long, malignant and systematic bullying," ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Are The Flaws Of Modern Education Flaws of Modern Education "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." –Nelson Mandela. An undisputed leader of all Africans has just gave us a a small glimpse of how powerful education can be. As every corner of the world progresses and develops through globalization, there are more "educated" people in the world than ever before. However, is the "most powerful weapon" being used correctly? I believe not. Public education is one of the best inventions of the modern era. Regardless of sex, race, or money, everyone is given the same education. Genius. Education thrived for who knows how long, but now we have today. Things are seemingly going downhill and getting worse. Like a snowball gaining speed and size ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The truth that nobody wants to face is that our educational system is archaic. The wrong things are being taught and the self–centered grading system is corrupting our youth. Therefore modern education is have negative impact on the students. First of all, our education system is outdated. The very education system that is being used today emerged during the Industrial Revolution, when there were rumbling factories and child labor everywhere. Only few changes were made (they weren't even good changes), meaning modern education is still designed to cater the needs of that time. It is evident; more importance is assigned on some subjects while other subjects are completely pushed out of the realm. The dominating subject is still mathematics, followed by languages, sciences, humanities and the arts. Exactly what the Industrial Revolution needs. This still remains standing today because nobody has the guts, power or determination to adjust the curriculum so it is more adequate for modern society. Furthermore, families are digging at alternatives constantly. Homeschooling, private schooling and religious schooling are all words rooted from the desperate attempts of parents to figure it out for their child. What went wrong? Wasn't there ... • 7. The Reflection Of Education And Values Of The Modern... Are humans merely thinking things that interact in this world from a purely intellectual frame work or is there something more, deeper, richer to the human creature, and how does the way one views human beings shape the way they view and organize education, especially Christian education? These are the main questions raised and discussed in Desiring the Kingdom (Cultural Liturgies): Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation by James K. A. Smith. The main focus of this work is to shift the modern Christian mindset concerning what education is and how one teaches and learns. The author believes that education should be primarily concerned with shaping one's view of the "good life" which means a change from a focus upon one's intellect being bombarded with ideas and doctrines to be learned and believed to a transformation of one's imagination (Smith, 2009, p. 18). The author seeks to accomplish this task by showing modern secular examples of what this world values and how it educates and indoctrinates individuals into its "religion" and then discusses how the church and Christian educational institutions might adopt, or rediscover, this "liturgical" method of forming individuals and communities. Within the first few chapters of this book the author introduces his subject matter by stating the main claim of the book which is that "liturgies– whether 'sacred' or 'secular'– shape and constitute our identities by forming our most fundamental desires and our most basic attunement ... • 9. The And The Modern Education System If the body and the mind are considered as a unity, it would be unwise to ignore the importance of the body. However, that is exactly the case with the modern education system. To prepare their students for tomorrow's world, many schools and teachers try to develop students' minds by increasing the required course work and the amount of standardized tests. However, they worsen a student's body condition by depriving him/her of the time to play and exercise. In "The Play Deficit," the Dr. Gray believes that "the decline in opportunity to play has been accompanied by a decline in empathy and a rise in narcissism" (Gray). Playing is a physical experience that develops the body and the mental capacity to understand other people. The lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Physical education enhances the mind through giving students a healthier body, but many schools have overlooked this fact. Carlson's and Gray's ideas are also well connected to the concept of mindful learning. In "Mindful Learning," Langer discusses how applying mindfulness to learning processes can free our brains from forming a mindset that limits our ideas. We can justify Dr. Gray's argument using the ideas of mindful learning. Dr. Gray believes that playing is learning, as children can learn many life lessons when they are enjoying their time. Langer explains mindful learning by suggesting that "tasks are inherently good or bad. To get through the bad ones, we should look forward to the good ones, or perhaps 'add a little sugar to help the medicine go down'" (222). If having fun is the good task, and learning academic lessons is the bad task, then playing is exactly the "sugar" that helps the learning process. When people are doing what they like, engagement in these tasks leads to mindful learning. In addition to Gray's ideas, we can also see how Carlson's argument is closely related to mindful learning. Carlson suggests that lack of exercise can lead to passive experience in learning. Meanwhile, Langer suggests that, contrary to mindfulness, the process of mindless learning occurs in passive learning as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter how much one might prepare, parenting is a job for which no one can prepare. In the beginning, every time you contemplate the responsibility of that tiny person being placed in your care, awe and freaking out best describe the emotions that roll. Thus begins the journey of parenthood. A parent bathes, cuddles, and prepares the house for baby's first steps. One of Howard Gardner 's eight multiple intelligences , bodily kinesthetic intelligence involves the ability to hold objects, body control and coordination. Possession of bodily kinesthetic intelligence means an individual can initiate body movements in concert with thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Sports activities (for example baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc.) as well as dance, mime, drama, and martial arts require this ability. Bodily kinesthetic intelligence needs to be developed and must not be sacrificed in favor of verbal linguistic intelligence and logical mathematical intelligence, which most schools today heavily emphasize in their curriculum and assessments. (Leonard, 16) A behaviorist believes that instruction is fostered by observable, measurable, and controllable objectives set by the instructor. The learner is then asked to produce a specified set of responses based upon a controlled set of stimuli. This theory is based on B.F. Skinner's work with mice in the 1930s. n behaviorism the assumption is made, that by controlling the environment of mice, they could be trained to follow a predetermined pattern. Humans, when given the proper motivation, could also be trained to respond in a specific manner displayed in set of behavioral outcomes. • 13. How Bilingualism Has Impacted The United States ' Modern... Rebeca Patino Formal Essay #4 OAKS D America vs Language In the article, Speak Spanish, You're in America!: El Huracan over language and Culture, Juan Gonzalez, a journalist and broadcaster of the daily show, Democracy Now, describes how bilingualism has impacted the United States' modern education system. He describes an amendment that would constitute English as the official in the United States, which he believes can be a potential threat to the educational system. Gonzalez suggests that instead of having an amendment that constitutes English as the national language, American schools should implement Spanish to highlight the importance of being bilingualism in the American educational system. A constitutional amendment declaring English as the national language would be damaging to bilingual students because it would limit their capability of communicating in English or their native language, and therefore they have would fall behind in classes and will not succeed in the American educational system. To highlight the importance of bilingualism, even more the educational system should implement a variety of languages. It is beneficial for bilingual students to be taught in both their native language and in English to assimilate with ease into the American educational system. Gonzalez demonstrates how Native Americans, especially the Cherokees implemented English in their curriculum while also teaching them their own language. This form of teaching did not only teach ... According to some people nowadays the word modern education is considered to be a synonym to the word "ease", while to others it is considered as an improvement to teaching and learning skills. Technology is gradually developing by the day that now we embrace computers and tablets in offices and schools more than books. In additional to teachers who mostly use projectors to display videos or designed programs which grab the attention of their students in classes. But apparently along with all the advantages modern education has, it also has disadvantages such as effecting a student's health state or how it may cause a student to rely on the internet rather than his own intelligence and creativity. • 17. How Stratification Is Alive And Well Throughout Modern... When thinking about society we are able to see a clear distinction between groups that are clearly more advantaged or disadvantaged than other groups. In modern society, these advantages and disadvantages are not always by design, but they fall back into a deeper more stratified system in which everyone has become part of today. There are some things that happen subconsciously that make someone seem better than another person or ways of thinking that because of the past have forced us to think the way that we do currently. Stratification is everywhere, from our personal life, jobs, networks and even schools. There are a magnitude of factors that play into our life that help us decide what we want to do and factors that decide what we might or might not be able to do. In this paper, I want to focus on how the idea of stratification is alive and well in modern education and futures of those attending secondary education. First off I want to ask the questions, what do you as the reader first think about when you hear the name Purdue University? Is it the stellar engineering programs or maybe the veterinarian school? What about athletics? When the name Purdue is brought up does it make you think of the long streak of losing seasons of the football team or the uprising basketball program? All of these things are important and they lead into the stratification of Purdue University. It's impossible to deny that Purdue is a great school for a lot of different reasons and each of ... • 19. Sex Education Is An Important Class Modern Day Society Sex education is an important class in modern day society. Many adolescents today are surrendering their virginity at very young ages. Therefore, teens need to be informed about all the risks that may accompany participation in sexual intercourse. These classes can help decrease the number of STD cases and teen pregnancies each year as well as encourage teens to have "safe sex" if they choose to engage in it at all.* Sex education classes are valuable because they help teens realize the devastating risk of diseases that can be a consequence of sex, advise students to have safe sex if they are going to partake in it, and warns them of the risky probability of the female becoming pregnant as a result. Partaking in sexual intercourse puts that person at risk for multiple STD's depending on the sexual history of both partners. Diseases of this variety, like any other, often are accompanied by horrible life–long repercussions. "An STD is any disease that is spread primarily by sexual contact," says About Health. There are a variety of known STD's, but some of the more common ones are: Chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, and Herpes/HSV. "Chlamydia is the most common curable STD," says About Health. This painful disease concerns the female's cervix and male's penile urethra. This STD is incredibly common because some people don't display any symptoms for, sometimes, very long periods of time. Some profound symptoms that one may experience are: pain during intercourse and discharge from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Technology's Positive Effects on Modern Society and Education Technology's Positive Effects on Modern Society and Education For a typical American, reflection upon one's blessings may be in order; it is easy to shift one's focus away from the modern conveniences and innovations of today because technology is everywhere: everything from eyeglasses to drinking glasses to cell phones and the Internet. Today's world is swarming and buzzing with technology and is, consequently, shaping itself into a place quite different from the one in which today's adults were raised. Technology has played a major role in the development of modern global culture, and is still continuing to make lasting effects on all people, particularly the youth. These innovations in entertainment manifest themselves as television and video games. Video gamers are thrown into a world which is entirely different than their own, with its own sets of rules and challenges, and are then expected to make sense of it, perform tasks, solve problems, and do it all in a manner which is better than the other players around the globe with whom they compete. They must construct their own set of hypotheses, test them, and then continue on to create and order a set of steps in a plan of execution (Gladwell). Likewise, modern television shows have become unprecedentedly complicated, following several intertwining plotlines and sometimes more than a dozen characters that, together, form a complex, intricate web of relations for the viewer to decipher (Gladwell). • 23. Similarities Between Elizabethan And Modern Education Elizabethan and Modern Education The Elizabethan Era, the "Golden Age" of English history, ended with the death of Queen Elizabeth I, but its approach to education lingered centuries beyond that. During the Elizabethan times, education was completely dependent upon a person's social status and gender, as well as the whims of the sitting monarch. Although that is not the case anymore, similarities can be drawn between Elizabethan and modern education. In fact, Elizabethan education and modern education share more similarities than differences. The first similarity is that there were many different levels of education. Students learned how to read and write in English and how to do sums, in what was known as a 'Petty School', the most elementary level of education ("What Every Schoolboy Knows."). These were not actually schools. A 'Petty School' was actually the house of an educated housewife who would teach children for a small price ("Elizabethan Era England Life."). Along with learning how to read and write in English, they also learned catechism and lessons on behavior ("Elizabethan Era England Life."). From the ages 7 to 14, children who were non–noble went to Grammar Schools, which prepared them for university, where courses were taught in Latin. Latin was considered the "language of the educated" throughout Europe, so students were expected to become proficient in it ("What Every Schoolboy Knows."). Between the ages of 7 and 10, they were taught by Ushers, who taught them parts of speech, verbs, sentence structure, and how to translate English to Latin ("Elizabethan Era Daily Life: Food, Education, Marriage, Family, Fashion."). During this time, they were taught with the Horn–Book and the Elizabethan Alphabet. The Horn Book was considered to be the "most important tool" used in the Grammar Schools. It was a piece of parchment that was normally pasted onto a wooden board with a handle, and covered with a plate of transparent horn, which made it both durable and inexpensive. The horn–book displayed the alphabet in both small and capital letters, and the Lord's Prayer in English. The mark of the cross was also included, so the alphabet was known as "Christcross–row" ("Elizabethan Education."). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Importance Of Education In Modern Society Education is not as highly implemented as it is in our modern society. As mentioned before, each tracker has 5 compartments in which people can purchase KCs (Knowledge Chips) but at a rather high price. You can choose to go to school and it serves to get a better job, although, there is a very small guarantee you will move up to a higher class. There is an exam that basically determines your whole future, fail it, and you do not have any chance of taking it again or proving what you're worth. This exam consists of basic knowledge and how to apply skills to their modern society. An example of what happens in this exam is that is passed, they get brainwashed and gets their family into a higher class with them as well. There is always a catch with everything that is beneficial to their society because they want to keep the number of Golds and high class people to a minimum. School is also mainly focused on teaching the morals of respect and family but also tries to make all enrolled students to be happy in what social class they are in. Once in a high class or a part of the Golds, the former adults and students do not receive any more education because there is no way to go down the social scale. This is the very reason why after education has been part of their lives, they can brainwashed. The society does not permit anyone moving down the scale because that is just an insult to them. Thus begins the journey of parenthood. A parent baths, cuddles, prepares the house for baby's first steps, records their first words and ultimately starts them on the road to lifelong learning. At first so much is dependent upon you, the parent. You after all are your children's first heroes. In the beginning you can do no wrong so in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Learning must be "constructed" through opportunities to interact with sensory things so they can develop a personal understanding of the world around them. Therefore learning must be an active process. These theorists also emphasize the importance of language in learning. Constructivists believe in the social element of learning where a child seeks to understand their peers' view of the world in comparison to their own views. It is a process that does not produce instantaneous learning so there is a need to develop a sense of meaning, application and purpose. [...] We do know how you love them. We love them. But we don't know how to promise their safety in the face of such random rage. We will build barricades, and we will take precautions, but the rest is unbearable. We cannot bear the unbearable, either." (Williams, 2008, pg. 70) A major theme that is addressed by the authors of three books covered in this class is that teachers sacrifice everything for their students. Teachers sacrifice their safety, their free time, and the amount of money they could earn someplace else to support the next generation of leaders learning to write their names. Sahlberg (2015, pg. 122) says that, "Teaching is commonly viewed in Finland as a demanding profession that requires superior academic qualifications, even for teachers of very young students." In Finland, teachers sacrifice their free time to work hard for their students giving them the best and most up to date information possible. Williams (2008, pg. 70) expresses that teachers sacrifice to protect students from "bullies, and bad words and bad thoughts and bad self– esteem, and we do our best." • 31. The Importance Of Feminism In Modern Education Modern education is changing faster than we can keep up with it. There are things being retracted and things being added very quickly. Education in modern times, tends to flow with the times, meaning whatever major controversy there is, it's talked about in modern education. Feminism is a very controversial topic that teachers and staff alike, are trying to get embedded into our education patterns. What exactly is feminism? Well it really depends on what site you've read it off of but the dictionary definition is, the advocacy for women's rights based on the equality of the sexes. There can be many pro's and con's to having feminism taught in our education, but there is higher likelihood of a negative outcome if we were to do so. Feminism is very subjective movement. It's so complex that it often gets taken out of context and turned into something it is not. Having modern education embed feminism into their courses, could end disastrously. With feminism being such a subjective movement, people need to be able to gain their own perspective on what feminism is. Annie Dillard is an essayist who toys with an idea that we grown up with everyone's perspective on things, so we cannot make a judgement or give a name to the things that we see. Dillard proclaims "I couldn't unpeach the peaches"(Dillard 51). If we are told what feminism is, we will never know anything different. Many scholars have talked about the role of standardized tests in students performance. The answer is no. Standardized tests do not measure student 's education or knowledge. The topic of standardized testing is complex in that it provokes a system that has been established for a long time and that is used by every college and school in United States. Many people believe that standardized tests are biased and aren't inclusive while others argue that they are effective in testing student's knowledge. Emerson's Theories of Education vs Modern-day Theories Essay Emerson and today's theories of education view discipline as necessary for the progress of students in the classroom; however, Emerson's beliefs differ from modern–day theories of discipline in "respecting a child" encompassing "patience", "the receiving mind" and "discovers for himself his goal in life." Emerson realized that progressive learning is not a dictator relationship. "Respecting a child" will enhance the student's ability to achieve their goals. As today's society lives in the fast lane so does our educational society. It is a type of learning that is dictated by the government on their own pace. The need to succeed hinders students from finding their true potential. For years, headlines have read "American students are behind other international students." In Gerald W. The government is pressuring students to do better than other country counter parts for no other reason than to fulfill their own agenda. "One reason why Americans believe their children compare poorly to foreign students is that for 12 years, the Reagan and Bush administration promoted a conservative agenda hostile to the public schools and gave bad news about education far more publicity than good news" (Bracey 2). Philosophy helps teachers to reflect on key issues and concepts in education, usually through such questions as: What is being educated? What is the good life? What is knowledge? What is the nature of learning? And What is teaching? Philosophers think about the meaning of things and interpretation of that meaning. Even simple statements, such as "What should be learned? Or What is adolescence?" set up raging debates that can have major implications. For example, what happens if an adolescent commits a serious crime? One interpretation may hide another. The curricular emphasis is subject matter of mind: literature, history, philosophy, and religion. Teaching methods focus on handling ideas through lecture, discussion, and Socratic dialogue (a method of teaching that uses questioning to help students discover and clarify knowledge). What are the key similarities and differences between the two? There have been a lot of educational reforms over the years in which it can be traced as far back as far as the Shang Dynasty. Education is necessary as it lead to wealth and success, so it was and still is important to the Chinese people, in the past and now. Which is a similarity, education has always been valued by the people. There was a plan to reform to increase public education and rebuild the society. In 1911, the difference was that the government was completely forsaken towards the traditional way of education. Historically, there was a pattern to divide china and the educational system between private and official, in which there was a purpose to train students to be better. 2. Using Zhang Yimou's film Not One Less, identify challenges that a migrant from the country to the city might encounter. One challenge would be that since it is such a long journey and there isn't a lot of money for transportation, it typically takes around a month for a migrant to go to the city. They need to find someone to take care of their jobs or other needs that need to be taken care of while they are gone. In the case of the video, the teacher had to find a young girl to teach the class while he was gone. She was inexperienced and didn't have very many talents of her own. Another challenge that they would have is that they would be very unfamiliar with the city lifestyle. When the young girl reaches the city she looks to be intrigued with how much is going on compared to what she had in her village. Also, everything in the city is more expensive for them coming from poverty. 3. Identify three challenges faced by rural schools in China. Each essay that is submitted is expected to follow a set of rules, with students obligated to follow these rules and to create an end product that encompasses the expectations set forth by their teacher. The following summary and response to Mark Edmundson's work follows most of the rules, though it may not meet expectations set forth by a single teacher. Some risks are worth taking, even if it may seem to jeopardize the educational path students feel obliged to follow. Using his experiences with students who follow rules, Edmundson makes many misguided judgments about the passions, individuality, and educational decisions of students. "On the Uses of a Liberal Education" by Mark Edmundson examines the relationship between the ways of college students and the society they are involved in. He states that students lack passion and avoid taking educational chances to challenge themselves. Edmundson also has the idea that all of his students, except for a few outliers, are cowardly and unwilling to pursue higher paths of education. According to Edmundson, the universities are to blame; the main purpose of the universities being to appease the wants and needs of students. This consumer culture created by universities is unknowingly perpetuated by the students who wish to attend. Edmundson concludes with ideas of how to improve this relationship: ... From the thriving economy in the early 1900s, to the infamous downfall of the stock market that lead to the Great Depression in the 1930s. America has always faced different obstacles that has shaped the modern day American society. Poverty levels have increased rapidly which sparked interest in some organizations to create a campaign called "Do Something", which advocates improving American lives through better education and higher quality of living. One statistic given was that, "In 2011, nearly 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty" (11 Facts). With many occupations requiring some type of post–secondary education. How can the quality of life be improved if a myriad of people are facing such high levels of poverty and cannot afford the cost of that higher education? Obstacles in obtaining an education beyond high school come from the prejudice in education by making it affordable to those with the ability to pay the out of pocket costs. More than likely, you pictured a classroom of older students, perhaps in a high school or college classroom. Now replace these students with 6 year olds and imagine what it would feel like to sit and listen for hours, powerless next to the authority of a strict teacher. This was the case before Maria Montessori changed the way that teachers viewed and taught students. Now, think about what educating young children looks like in a modern elementary school classroom. You probably pictured a group of kindergarteners sitting on small chairs at a short table, building with blocks or counting beads. These children love school, because their teacher creates an environment that builds upon their natural desire to learn. This improved method of teaching children is thanks to Montessori's principles on educating students by advancing their natural curiosity and desire to learn. Maria Montessori's perseverance, desire to learn how to effectively engage students, and discovery of the natural ways that students learn reflect teaching methods that continue to benefit students today. In this paper, I wish to expound on Zen Buddhist perspectives on modern education. The history of Buddhist education is long and complex. In early centuries (400 BCE– 800 CE), Buddhist monasteries in India and China functioned as educational centers where vinaya, sutras and other subjects were taught. Many men and women were refugees from social injustice and the sangha provided them with education, security and dignity. Spirituality and pedantry were always combined in Buddhist education. I shall interpolate typical Zen positions with non–technical observations in order to balance between scholarly and non–scholarly views. The third section will present a conclusion of this paper. I Monasteries The history of education is long and complex. In ancient Egypt and India, for instance, education consisted mainly of the study of morality, astrology, and religious knowledge. The availability of education in that period was limited to rulers, administrators, soldiers, and priests. In fact, only the elite received education. However, the availability of education gradually changed in Asia and Europe, as more people, included commoners, gained access to education. In India, even untouchables and women were permitted to join Buddhist sangha (community) and were given opportunities to study; many oppressed individuals sought a safety net in sangha. For the first time, around the fourth century B.C., in India, some Buddhists defied the rigid caste system, as monasteries sprung up in many parts of India. When we first begin kindergarten, to our senior year of high school challenges are testing our intelligence by issuing standardized test, and we are oblivious to. As a high school student, I felt intrigued to learn more. When our Founding Fathers' first came to America, the people were in charge of their education and this is how our country functioned. This caused many to start private schools, picking their tutors, and teaching their children. As you can see, this was open and free. This system worked for them at the time, in fact, the literacy level was as high as 97% in the North and 81% in the South. (How Did Government Get So Involved in Education, 2008). This sort of system was in place for the first fifty to seventy–five years of our nation's first known establishment. Nevertheless, providing an alternative was what reformers aimed to do. Calculus As A Part Of Modern Mathematics Education Calculus (from Latin calculus, literally "small pebble used for counting")[1] is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. It has two major branches, differential calculus (concerning rates of change and slopes of curves),[2] and integral calculus (concerning accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves);[3] these two branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well–defined limit. Generally, modern calculus is considered to have been developed in the 17th century by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz. Today, calculus has widespread uses in science, engineering and economics[4] and can solve many problems that elementary algebra alone cannot. Calculus is a part of modern mathematics education. The innovative waves of instruction are taking a hold on schools across America. Positive results are being seen. The outdated practices of using textbooks as primary information and sitting behind your desk and lecturing are over. Students must be stimulated in a multitude of ways; however, the most diverse and innovative ways of presenting crucial information is through technology. Creating lessons in your classroom that are always the same is extremely selfish and not effective to all students. Technology has given educators the luxury of differentiating instruction and personalizing it for our students ("The Importance of", March, 2015). Most curricula have a pacing guide that lists the important topics that are to be taught, but they do not explain how they must be covered. This gives the teacher opportunity to be themselves and create their own individuality through classroom instruction and diverse teaching methods. "A study by Educause found that K–12 and college students prefer to have technology integrated into their curriculum" ("The Importance of", March, 2015). My philosophy is also in–line with Merriam and Brockett (2009), where according to them, the progressive philosophy is where it places more value in knowledge derived from observation and experience than it does from tradition and authority (p. 35). With women forming fifty percent of the entire population, it is essential that they match their strides with the male population. Only then can a nation advance. Keeping this in mind, many of the developing nations are allocating a quarter of their national budget to education; some of them even more. (Venkataiah, 2001)A host of problems have however kept these countries from achieving their goal. A major problem faced by most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Muslim period, the purdah system was in vogue. Consequently the girls did not go to the Madrasas like the boys, to receive education. Still, it cannot be maintained that there was total lack of female education during the Muslim period. The example of Nurjahan is testimony of the fact that arrangement for the education of ladies of the royal family was made in the palace. Some of the girls belonging to the Royal families having an artistic inclination received education through 'Ustads', who went to the palace regularly to impart instructions. The daughters of the gentry were also educated individually at home. No separate arrangements were made either by the Government or by the society and hence it had a very limited scope. (Chaube & Chaube, 1999). Though education is the most vital and potent instrument for individual and social development and progress, women have been kept away from it in India from the medieval period to advent of missionaries in India. It was only with the coming of the Christian Missionaries that an attempt was made to revive female education in India. By the middle of the nineteenth century, some progressive Indians and Englishmen started working for their reawakening. According to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Modern World 's Education System In History Begins at Sumer, Kramer informs us about how Sumerians lived during 2000 B.C. He discusses different topics such as education, justice, medicine, and many more. The book mainly focuses on Sumer but as you read you start to notice that our world and Sumerian world are similar. It's an eye opener to how everything we do came about and where it all started. The part we don't actually know is how Sumerians came up with their way of living. Many may assume that their ancient world is so different but after reading History Begins at Sumer they would later realize the similarities outweighs the differences. Kramer wrote that Sumerians and modern humans are fundamentally analogous, comparable, and reciprocally illuminating (Kramer, 259). Which he's basically saying that our worlds are obviously different but at the same time extremely similar. His book persuades you to have the same thought process. Kramer wrote about the education system in the ancient Sumerian world which happens to sound a little like modern world's education system. The school has one main focus and that was to teach scribes to write in Sumerian language (Kramer, 6). Student had to remember then recite what they've learned in a tablet which later became textbooks. They spent most of their day in school and like modern humans spent multiple years in school. We are in school from the age 6 to whenever we decide to be done. Sumerians according to History Begins at Sumer stayed in school from an early ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. What Are The Flaws Of Modern Education Education is one of, if not the most vital part of life. However, as David Kearns, the CEO for Xerox once said "Our large schools are organized like a factory of the late 19th century: top down, command control management, a system designed to stifle creativity and independent judgment." This quote helps to highlight the many flaws in modern education, which include seeking to hinder the development of deep thoughts and character. The system of education present in modern day America was established with an industrial mindset of each student serving the same purpose in society, and fails to accommodate the changing times, in which people have differing views, likes, and dislikes. School's structure teaches students to learn and act in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now, many adults see homework, and this strict schedule school makes a student follow as beneficial. However to put it bluntly, it harms a student much more than it helps. It does get a student ready for the structure and demands of their adult lives, but that experience shouldn't cost a student their time to develop themselves and grow as a person, and develop the character Dr. King said is a vital part of true education; the lack of which highlights one of the many flaws in the modern educational system. Aside from forcing students to improperly allocating their time, another major flaw in modern education is its focus on uniformity. School allows for things to be accomplished one way, and one way only. Predictably, this causes issues for the number of students who won't see the problem the way the school wants them to, and so they will be "wrong", because they didn't seek to follow the uniformity schools preach. For example, standardized testing grades a student on how well they can retain knowledge. Predictably, again, there will be a number of students who are brilliant, but are told they are failures simply because they don't learn the way the school wants them to. Nothing displays this idea better than this Albert Einstein quote, in which he says "If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life ... • 75. The Importance Of Responsibility In The Modern Education... The modern education system effectively utilizes the persistently developing technologies in order to maintain firm communications with the students' parents. Through automated messages, parents are regularly notified regarding school attendance, disciplinary action, and report card reminders, just to name a few. However, a couple generations earlier, the students maintained responsibility for notifying their parents regarding issues that could range from an out–of–school suspension to a statewide honor. The growing involvement of the school system in claiming responsibility for the students' issues results in the decreasing responsibilities that the students have to bear. Such a turn of events can result in complications regarding the student's overall development, both morally and socially. This constant connection between the school and the parent poses a detrimental yet potent threat to the student's overall development. The establishment of such a connection leaves little to no responsibility for the student to claim, and considering the fact that school maintains a major role in the child's early periods, the student is completely deprived from responsibility in his/her life. Claiming responsibility during one's childhood builds certain necessary attributes and traits that contributes to the overall development of the individual, of which may include but is not limited to integrity, love and respect, and determined motivation. Such a deprivation results in weak ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Mark Edmundson On The Uses Of Modern Education Summary On the Criticisms of Modern Education There are courses that students take in order to earn credit, and most require essays. "On the Uses of a Liberal Education" by Mark Edmundson examines the relationship between the ways of college students and the universities they attend. Edmundson concludes with ideas of how to improve this relationship: getting rid ...
