Evaluate the Claim That the Senate Is Far More Powerful...
Evaluate the claim that the Senate is far more powerful than the House of Representatives The US
federal legislature is bicameral, therefore it consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives,
and in theory they should both be of equal power. However, in reality it is the Senate which is
considered to hold the most power, although there are arguments to in favour of them having equal
rights. In order to reach a balanced judgement I will consider both sides of the argument, beginning
with the claim that the Senate is more powerful than the House of Representatives. Senators
represent an entire state, as members of the House of Representatives only represent districts,
highlighting from the outset their different abilities to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This point is backed up even more by the time members have before they face re–elections, as in the
Senate this period is every six years but only every two in the house. Consequently displaying the
implication of House members being less important than that of Senators who have a longer period
to make themselves known to their people and carry out their work without the hindrance of
elections. The senate is widely seen as a launching pad for a presidential campaign, as Presidents
Obama, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy and Truman were all former members of the Senate. While no
member of the House in recent years has been chosen to run for President apart from Ron Paul in
2012, showing the Senates dominance within Congress in this area, as further instilling this point is
the fact that 14 out of the last 15 elections the Democrats have nominated a senator as their vice–
presidential candidate. However, when it comes down to passing legislation the two chambers have
mostly equal powers, as neither chamber can overturn the decision made by the other, therefore the
senate cannot dominate the House. Along with the ruling that both chambers must approve
constitutional amendments, the House does however have exclusive powers over money bills, but
this is overshadowed by the Senates ability to ratify or even reject a

Congress is made up of two chambers, one chamber being the House of Representatives and the
other chamber being the Senate. While both parts of Congress come together to vote on bills and to
review legislation they differ in many parts as well. "The House of Representative was founded in
1789 by the Constitution of the United States". (Charles Van Doren, senate, britannica.com). The
House of Representatives are made up of 435 representatives (also known as congressman or
congresswoman) each representative in elected to the position can is elected for a two year term.
According to the constitution the House of Representative have certain powers which include to
power to initiate and impeachment hearing. The Senate was established in 1789 by the constitution

The fourth power is the power to appoint reps to conference committee. The fifth power is the
power to recognize points of orders/amendments. The sixth and last power is the power to interpret
procedural rules. However, all the power is concentrated with the leaders of the House and Senate
respectively. All the other power is held when the individual legislators get to vote or act in
defiance. Within the Texas House of Representatives and the Senate there are power restraints. The
presiding officers may have all the power, however, their power is balanced and checked. This is
similar to the Judicial, Executive and Legislative branches of our federal government because they
all balance the power within each other. Presiding officers can have their power checked by the
governor threatening to veto, not support, or simply gut the bill taking away its teeth. Another way a
presiding officer can get his power limited is by group efforts to solve issues of getting bills passed
or even block them in the house or senate. The political/economical ambition of the Texas Governor,
those beneath him, or of those found in the legislative bodies, is another way of power

House Of Representatives Research Paper
The United States Congress is a bicameral institution divided into two chambers: the House of
Representatives and the Senate. Members of the House of Representatives serve two–year terms,
and population determines their number per state. Senators are apportioned equally, with each state
receiving two, and they serve six–year terms, with individual senators' terms being staggered in
two–year intervals. The Founders chose this way of organizing the chambers as a compromise
between states with large populations (which receive more representation in the House) and states
with smaller populations (which hold much more power in the Senate relative to their populations),
and also to incentivize or discourage certain behaviors within each chamber. Since members of the
House of Representatives serve specific geographical districts, they tend toward sociological
representation, in which the representative shares demographic traits, experiences, and interests with
their constituents. Their short two–year term also highly encourages them to act as direct agents of
their constituents, knowing that they can much more easily lose their seat if they take an action
unpopular with those they represent. That being said, the redistricting process can and does result ...

The long six–year terms also allow them to take occasional actions contrary to what is popular with
their constituents, as they know they have time to get back in the public's good graces before the
next election. Staggering their terms ensures both that there is still a regular opportunity for turnover
of at least one third of the chamber every two years, while also ensuring that there is never a period
where every single senator is running for reelection at the same

The Size Of The House Of Representatives
In 1787, one of the most debated issues was the size of the House of Representatives. During the
Constitutional Convention, the delegates proposed that 40,000 citizens should be represented by one
congressional district. However, George Washington intervened and argued that 40,000 was too
high, and reasoned that 30,000 was more reasonable and allow people to be represented adequately
Washington's proposal was incorporated in Article One, Section Two of the Constitution which
states "representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective
numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State." While the number of representatives
did increase throughout the history of the United States, the number has been set at 435 members
since 1929. Congress in 1929 passed the Permanent Apportionment Act that set the number of
representatives at 435, which was set after a 1910 census. Currently each representative represents
700,000 citizens and congressional seats are redistricted around the nation based on population
changes. But the currently number of representatives does not adequately represent the present
population and a single district cannot represent a huge number of people. Therefore, the current
number of representatives must be increased. After the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929,
congressional seats are move around the nation after each decennial census However, each state is
entitled to one seat, no matter how large its

the federal government in the country. In the actual sense, it is considered to be quite a powerful
body when compared to the lower house that is the House of Representatives. The Senate is
composed of 100 members. Each state in the country is represented by two senators regardless of
the populace of the state. By giving them the power to make decisions and pass laws that regulate in
different areas including their economies, federalism encourages creativity which can lead to better
economic management and growth. The Senate also compete with each other to have the strongest
economies and in the process the entire country's economy improves.

Indonesian government and the House of Representative have been preparing a draft bill on culture
which aim at preserving and developing the national culture of Indonesia since 2007. However, the
government and the House have not agreed on some critical issues in defining culture and to what
extent the state is allowed to regulate and govern cultural lives of the people that arouse a

from the scholarly concept and become the political agenda which is reflected in a cultural policy.
The concept of culture is no longer solely the remit of academia used by anthropologists to

defining culture should take account of the wider social and political context in which the concept of
culture would be instilled in a public policy. In other worlds, the culture of cultural policy would
also determine the concept of culture defined by the state in cultural policy.
In this paper I would like to discuss the concept of culture which evolves in the courses of the
deliberation of the draft bill on culture and the implication of a certain concept toward the
Indonesian cultural diversity. This analysis will also reveal how the state imagines and understands

Throughout history both chambers have changed and both have similar powers when it comes to the

both chambers have a certain amount of power for example the senate has the power to try all

Our children need good and healthy, tasty, nutritious milk with plenty health benefits and loaded
with minerals that can help build their body. Incorporate soy milk in the children diet at school is a
good source of protein. Unlike most plant–based proteins –– which contain some, but not all, of the
amino acids you need in your diet –– soy contains all nine essential amino acids. Our body gather
these amino acids into new proteins, including antibodies essential for immune system function,
structural proteins that hold your tissues together, and enzymes that help your cells produce energy.
Drinking unprocessed soy milk will also help boost calcium and maintain dense and strong bone
tissue.
Parents are concerned about the milk being pasteurized and its harmful effect on their children since
most of the nutrient in the milk is destroyed during the process of pasteurization. Soy milk has
gained an image as a healthy alternative milk, if now being transformed, parents will consider the
soy milk like a high–risk milk. Drinking milk is nature's most perfect food. Our children need great
source of milk in order for them to be strong and healthy women and men tomorrow. In today's

viva voice, division, and recorded. Viva Voce is when the Speaker of the House asks the

the Speaker of the House asks those Representatives who support the bill to stand up and be

The Power Of The House Of Representatives
Congratulations on being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. I believe you should be very
familiar with the Texas Legislature as you have served as a member of the Texas Legislature for
eight years. However, the U.S. Legislature in Washington D.C. is very different from the Texas
Legislature while having some similarities. I would like to list some of the similarities and
differences between these two legislatures to help you in the transition as the Congress has changed
overtime and thus, to help develop your Home Style. The modern Congress is a reformed Congress
(Shaw, 2015:2). The power of the House of Representative was held in the hand of the Speaker in
the early 1900s. However, a resolution was introduced by George Norris after leading the
progressive Republicans and Democrats into a revolt against Joe Cannon, the Speaker, in 1910. The
power was moved to the hands of the committee chairs, which were determined by seniority, after
the revolt. (Shaw, 2015:3). The seniority system was challenged in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result,
a greater role was placed on the Speaker of the House and the majority party on determining the
assignment of the committee chairs. Moreover, the sub–committees had also become more
important in the legislature. Later in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the wages of the Congress
members and the number of staff had increased as a result of becoming more "professionalized".

Compare And Contrast Senate And House Of Representatives
The House of Representatives and the Senate are two words that have become so common the
average citizen hardly pays any attention between the differences of these two legislative bodies. To
make things clear about the legislative bodies, Congress is the name used to collectively describe the
House of representative and the Senate. The House is one of two parts that make up the U.S.
Congress the other being Senate. The Hose of representatives is comprised 435 members that are
based on the population of the State. Thus smaller State's have smaller numbers of representatives,
while larger states obtain a higher number of representatives.

The constitutional requirement for a House of representative member is very simple. First, at a
minimum you must be at least 25 years old. Second, you must have lived in the States for at least 7
years. Third, every two years the House of Representatives is up for election and re election.
Essentially, the 435 House members could be voted out of office within 2 years.
In the Senate you must be a minimum of 30 years old. Furthermore, you must have lived in the
United States at least 9 years. Lastly, instead of a two year term the senate has a 6–years term. In
laymen terms it would take 6–years for the entire senate to have been subject to election. Whereas,
in a six year period the house members would have been subject to election 3 times.
The number one advantage of the House is all revenue bills must originate in the House of
Representative. However, the senate will have the ability to consider the bill and create the
amendments. Nevertheless, the House will set the terms of the debate by adding their priorities with
any bills dealing with money. Setting the terms of the debate is a major advantage to the House.
Finally, the house has the power to impeach an elected official. Impeachment does not mean the
removal of an elected official it simply means they are charged with a

The Role of the Senate and House of Representatives Essay
The Role of the Senate and House of Representatives
The Congress of the United States consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives which
means the USA is bi–cambial. The Congress of the United States was created by Article I, Section 1,
of the Constitution, adopted by the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787.
The Senate is composed of 100 Members, 2 from each State, who are elected to serve for a term of 6
years. Senators were originally chosen by the State legislatures. This procedure was changed by the
17th amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1913, which made the election of Senators a

The Vice President of the United States is the Presiding Officer of the Senate; in his absence the
duties are taken over by a President pro tempore, elected by that body, or someone designated by
him. The Presiding Officer of the House of Representatives, the Speaker, is elected by the House; he
may designate any Member of the House to act in his absence.
On the other hand The House of Representatives is granted the power of originating all bills for the
raising of revenue. The House leadership is structured essentially the same as the Senate, with the
Members in the political parties responsible for the election of their respective leader and whips.
The elected officers of the House of Representatives include the Clerk, the Sergeant at Arms, and
the Chaplain.
Both Houses of Congress act in impeachment proceedings, which, according to the Constitution,
may be instituted against the President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States.
The House of Representatives has the sole power of impeachment, and the Senate has the sole
power to try impeachments.

Responsiveness In The House Of Representative
Responsive can simply mean answering, and in the case of congressmen the question one should ask
is whether they answer or reply to their constituent's inquiries. The question of whether
congressmen are responsive is important. Congressmen act as the representatives of diverse districts
and it is part of their duty to act on the interest of their constituents. Responsiveness should be a
factor that a district strongly considers when they re–elect a representative. A member of the House
of Representative must also display "a sense of identity" with his district, so that they "in turn, can
identify with him." They can portray their district's views by voting, sponsoring bills, or serving
committees that are relevant to their constituents. Nancy Pelosi is prime example of someone who is

Article One of the U.S Constitution grants all legislative power to the House of Representatives and

the house the bill is as to be scheduled, and then called for a reading, if not called the bill effectively

The Kentucky House Of Representative Candidates Forum For...
The second group I attended was the Kentucky House of Representative Candidates Forum for
house districts: 7, 11, 12, 13, and 14. This group was attended by me via online and took place on
campus at Brescia University in Owensboro Kentucky. The Candidates Forum was held on Monday
October 17 from 7:00pm–8:30pm CDT. The scene was that of an auditorium with six candidates
seated at a table in the front and to what appeared to be the group moderator at a podium to the right
of the room. The camera did not focus in on much of the audience for me to give an accurate
description, but there were several members there to observe and many had questions for the
Candidates.
The Kentucky House of Representatives Candidate Forum was an open–ended group. In other
words, it was open to the public primarily because it had a political agenda for gaining voters for the
Candidates that shared their views. The Candidates Forum can be identified by several of the groups
mentioned in our text, but the two groups that I feel best fit the description are: Educational group
and a Focus Group. First, I identified it with an educational because the Candidates objective is to
educate the viewers on their political stance in the race as well as educate the viewers about
important issues that need to be addressed. Lastly, I identified it with a focus group because a focus
group 'is closely related to task groups and problem–solving and decision–making groups in that

The Senate Should Be Abolished Of The Senate
The Senate plays a key role in tandem with the House of Commons, in the operation of Canada's
government, some people think that the Senate should be abolished; however without the Senate,
"The right to bear arms" could become true for Canada. The Senate should be reformed; abolishing
or keeping the Senate at its current state would be unjust. The current Senate is not elected,
effective, nor equal. If the Senate is kept at its current state, it will continue to operate fine, however
the Senate can be much more effective at what it does if it gets amended. Currently the Senate is not
elected, equal, nor efficient. People who comprise the Senate are selected by the governor general
on the advice of the Prime Minister, so those selected most likely will act in good intention towards
the Prime Minister. The Senate, unlike the House was designed to represent Canada's regions,
however it over–represents some provinces at the expense of others. For example currently, Quebec
and Ontario each have 24 seats, the same amount of seats as the four Western provinces as a whole.
Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional 29% of the seats.
Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes to that. The
Senate's job is to foster national unity, however currently they act in the interest of themselves and
the Prime Minister rather than in the interest of the people.
Abolishing the Senate is country suicide. If there is a

Based on my responses, this quiz placed me into the next generation left which includes people with
liberal values. As a person has different political views towards different things, my views are also
scattered between democrats and republicans in different prospects. I stand as a democrat while
taking the views related to criminal justice and immigration where they are more liberal. In some
cases, like the issue of gun control, I am in support of republicans as they strongly oppose the use of
guns and hand arms to control the crime.
The state house of Texas requires a person to be a U.S. citizen, 21 old or over, 2 years resident of
Texas and 1year resident prior to the elections. Watching over the past, the current representative for
state house Matt Rinaldi is a republican. In 2012, the district was represented by Bennett Ratliff who
was also a republican. Matt Rinaldi is proving his strong presence by winning the seat for two times
in the election of 2014 and 2016. This shows that the republicans have very strong voter population
in this district. Running for the House, I believe that my ideologies regarding the political values are
more democrats which would make it harder to win in this district. However, looking to the general
election of 2012, President Obama who was a democrat received more votes from this district. This
shows that the voters of this district have a mixed kind of political

Representation Of The House Of Representatives
The legislature of the United States consists of two houses, the Senate and the House of
Representatives. The bicameral system was created by the Founding Fathers in order to carry out
one of the most imperative functions of Congress, representation amongst other function such as
legislation, deliberation and scrutiny. The Senate ensures each state is equally represented with two
congressmen, equally the House of Representatives also has to carry out the function of
representation but its representatives unlike the Senate are proportioned to the population of the
states for example California has 55 representatives however Alaska has 1. Even though
representation is an important and well known function of the legislature the extent to which it is
carried out can be argued to have declined in the subsequent years due to factors such as the
expansion of the population. The role of representation was intended to be carried out in 13 states
under the Founding Fathers however the increase to 50 has made this function increasingly difficult.
The creation of the House of Representatives ensured the function of representation would be
carried out as the house was proportioned to equally represent all the states. Having a set number of
representatives in one states according to population ensures that the voices of that state's population
can be heard effectively. The Framers' choice of a bicameral system was in part a choice to leverage
two different representational schemes. The

Senate Vs House Of Representatives
The largest compromise in the U.S. Constitution is known as the Great Compromise. This was a
compromise between two completely different plans on how the U.S. Legislature should be laid out.
The framers of the constitution decided on a two chambered Legislature. Each chamber has many
different requirements, structures, responsibilities, and powers. Because of these differences, the
Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is known as the lower house.
The Legislature of the United States government is bicameral; this means that it is "a governmental

These differences are why the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives
is called the lower house. According to the Constitution, to be a member of the Senate a candidate
must be at least thirty years of age, be a citizen of the United States for nine years, and must live in
the state at the time elected. To be a member of the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at
least twenty–five years of age, must be a citizen of the United States for seven years, and must live
in the state at the time elected. These different requirements support that the Senate is the upper
house because the requirements needed to be in the Senate are stricter than those of the House. The
structures also differ greatly. There are 435 members of the House and only 100 members of the
Senate. Because of this, each individual member's vote in the Senate is worth more than each
member of the House. Also a Senator's term lasts longer than a Representative's term; a Senator's
term is six years and a Representative's is two. Because of this, Senators have more time to make
and change legislation. Also if a House member makes changes that voters don't like, they can be
replaced in under two years. In the Senate, however, if negative changes are made, there isn't
anything voters can do for years and they can continue to make changes that are disagreeable to
voters. The two chambers also have different responsibilities and powers that show that the Senate is
the upper house. The House has the power to impeach government officials. They act as a
"prosecutor". The Senate holds the trials of impeachment and acts as "judge and jury" (United States
Senate). The Senate acts as the upper house because the House only brings issues involving
impeachment to the attention of the Senate. It is the Senate who actually can impeach officials. The
Senate also has

The Legislative process is how a bill becomes law. The first step is introducing a bill to Congress.
Though anyone can write the bill, only members of Congress can present and introduce it. The bill
can go through many changes during its introduction. After introduction, the bill is referred to the
appropriate committee for review. There are 17 Senate committees, with 70 subcommittees, and 23
House committees, with 104 subcommittees. The members of the subcommittee must agree to move
forward with the bill and then it is sent off to the full committee; here, the process begins again and
is repeated. The full committee must vote to approve the bill to send it on to the House or Senate.
The House then debates the bill and if it is approved it will be sent to the President. The President
makes the decision to either approve the bill and sign it into law or veto it. In the case that he vetoes
it, Congress may override the veto with a two–thirds vote of each chamber. After this process, the

There is also an age difference along with other requirements for joining the two parties as well (25

Congress was created because the founding fathers were afraid of putting too much power given to
only one individual would cause abuse of that power, and because the system of government needed
the system of checks and balances (Ln, 4–2&3). When Congress was being made by the founding
fathers the two separate political parties were arguing over how representation would be decided.
The larger states wanted representation based on population, but the smaller states wanted equal
representation for every state. The founding fathers made Congress a bicameral legislature for each
of the ideas. The two houses are the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of
Representatives has a 435 representatives and it is seen as the house that is more closely with the
people. The Senate has 100 representatives and it is seen as the house of the more upper class.

The main difference is the prestige of each house. The Senate has more prestige so the size of the
members is smaller. The terms of the Senate members are the longest of anyone in any branch. The
smaller size of the Senate means that there are less rules for the members to follow. There does not
have to be as much order. When the Senate debate sometimes some members want to block a bill
form passing. The technique that members can use is the Filibuster technique. This is when the
members take the floor and just continuously talk until it is too late for the bill to be passed (Ln, 4–
17). The House of Representatives has less prestige than the Senate, because the House is more
directly representing the people. There are more members in the House and they have smaller terms
than the Senate. The large size of the House means that there are more rules to follow and there is
more order. The House has limited debate, so they cannot block each other from voting on a

  • 1. Evaluate the Claim That the Senate Is Far More Powerful... Evaluate the claim that the Senate is far more powerful than the House of Representatives The US federal legislature is bicameral, therefore it consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and in theory they should both be of equal power. However, in reality it is the Senate which is considered to hold the most power, although there are arguments to in favour of them having equal rights. In order to reach a balanced judgement I will consider both sides of the argument, beginning with the claim that the Senate is more powerful than the House of Representatives. Senators represent an entire state, as members of the House of Representatives only represent districts, highlighting from the outset their different abilities to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This point is backed up even more by the time members have before they face re–elections, as in the Senate this period is every six years but only every two in the house. Consequently displaying the implication of House members being less important than that of Senators who have a longer period to make themselves known to their people and carry out their work without the hindrance of elections. The senate is widely seen as a launching pad for a presidential campaign, as Presidents Obama, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy and Truman were all former members of the Senate. While no member of the House in recent years has been chosen to run for President apart from Ron Paul in 2012, showing the Senates dominance within Congress in this area, as further instilling this point is the fact that 14 out of the last 15 elections the Democrats have nominated a senator as their vice– presidential candidate. However, when it comes down to passing legislation the two chambers have mostly equal powers, as neither chamber can overturn the decision made by the other, therefore the senate cannot dominate the House. Along with the ruling that both chambers must approve constitutional amendments, the House does however have exclusive powers over money bills, but this is overshadowed by the Senates ability to ratify or even reject a ... • 3. Essay On House Of Representatives Congress is made up of two chambers, one chamber being the House of Representatives and the other chamber being the Senate. While both parts of Congress come together to vote on bills and to review legislation they differ in many parts as well. "The House of Representative was founded in 1789 by the Constitution of the United States". (Charles Van Doren, senate, britannica.com). The House of Representatives are made up of 435 representatives (also known as congressman or congresswoman) each representative in elected to the position can is elected for a two year term. According to the constitution the House of Representative have certain powers which include to power to initiate and impeachment hearing. The Senate was established in 1789 by the constitution as a way of checks and balance for the House of Representatives. Each state will elect 2 senators for a six year term to represent them. The role of the Senate was as I said intended to be a checks and balances and for all states regardless of size can have and equal say in the legislature. • 5. Essay On Texas House Of Representatives Presiding Officers are the highest officers and leaders of an organized group such as a board committee, or deliberative assembly. For the Texas Senate, the presiding officer is Lieutenant Governor. As Lieutenant Governor, they are a Hybrid Official with a 4 year term. They are elected in a partisan statewide election and they get paid $7,200 annually. The current Lieutenant Governor of Texas, is Dan Patrick (42nd). Dan Patrick is a Republican and a Baptist. He is also a radio talk show host. For the Texas House of Representatives, the presiding officer is the Speaker of the House. The Speaker of the House serves a 2 year term, is an elected member of the TX House and is selected by members of the House. The current Speaker of the House is Joe Straus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fourth power is the power to appoint reps to conference committee. The fifth power is the power to recognize points of orders/amendments. The sixth and last power is the power to interpret procedural rules. However, all the power is concentrated with the leaders of the House and Senate respectively. All the other power is held when the individual legislators get to vote or act in defiance. Within the Texas House of Representatives and the Senate there are power restraints. The presiding officers may have all the power, however, their power is balanced and checked. This is similar to the Judicial, Executive and Legislative branches of our federal government because they all balance the power within each other. Presiding officers can have their power checked by the governor threatening to veto, not support, or simply gut the bill taking away its teeth. Another way a presiding officer can get his power limited is by group efforts to solve issues of getting bills passed or even block them in the house or senate. The political/economical ambition of the Texas Governor, those beneath him, or of those found in the legislative bodies, is another way of power ... • 7. Id Rather Be a Senator Than a Member of the House of... 'Id rather be a senator than a member of the house of representatives' Both houses need each other in order to function as they are both part of the legislative branch of government however there are many arguments to suggest that senate is more prestigious that the house of representatives. American citizens see a lot more pride in their senator as they represent the entire state not just a small region within it. For example Representative Joe Baca represents a single congressional region in California whereas Jerry Brown represents the entire state. The senator has a greater reputation for representing the views of the state over what the party tells them or their own personal views which make the individuals within the state feel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second power of the house is the power to impeach a member of the executive or judiciary if they feel they are not behaving correctly, this has happened 17 times since 1789, in 1980 they impeached 3 judges and in 1999 President Clinton. The final exclusive responsibility of the house is that if the Electoral College produced a deadlock the house would have to choose the president, this has only happened twice, in 1800 and 1924. These responsibilities of the house are all of great importance for the American political system to function and could and have been fundamentally responsible for the leader of the country. On the other hand the responsibilities of being a senator could be more attractive as there is a greater platform to launch a presidential campaign than from the House of Representatives. Presidents such as Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Barak Obama were all members on the senate before starting their campaign. In 2008 Obama himself and 5 of his competitors all had seats in the senate and 2 former senators were also running for president in 2008: John Edwards and Fred Thompson. The case is similar for those in the recruitment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. House Of Representatives Research Paper The United States Congress is a bicameral institution divided into two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Members of the House of Representatives serve two–year terms, and population determines their number per state. Senators are apportioned equally, with each state receiving two, and they serve six–year terms, with individual senators' terms being staggered in two–year intervals. The Founders chose this way of organizing the chambers as a compromise between states with large populations (which receive more representation in the House) and states with smaller populations (which hold much more power in the Senate relative to their populations), and also to incentivize or discourage certain behaviors within each chamber. Since members of the House of Representatives serve specific geographical districts, they tend toward sociological representation, in which the representative shares demographic traits, experiences, and interests with their constituents. Their short two–year term also highly encourages them to act as direct agents of their constituents, knowing that they can much more easily lose their seat if they take an action unpopular with those they represent. That being said, the redistricting process can and does result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The long six–year terms also allow them to take occasional actions contrary to what is popular with their constituents, as they know they have time to get back in the public's good graces before the next election. • 11. The Size Of The House Of Representatives In 1787, one of the most debated issues was the size of the House of Representatives. During the Constitutional Convention, the delegates proposed that 40,000 citizens should be represented by one congressional district. However, George Washington intervened and argued that 40,000 was too high, and reasoned that 30,000 was more reasonable and allow people to be represented adequately Washington's proposal was incorporated in Article One, Section Two of the Constitution which states "representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State." While the number of representatives did increase throughout the history of the United States, the number has been set at 435 members since 1929. Congress in 1929 passed the Permanent Apportionment Act that set the number of representatives at 435, which was set after a 1910 census. Currently each representative represents 700,000 citizens and congressional seats are redistricted around the nation based on population changes. But the currently number of representatives does not adequately represent the present population and a single district cannot represent a huge number of people. Therefore, the current number of representatives must be increased. After the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, congressional seats are move around the nation after each decennial census However, each state is entitled to one seat, no matter how large its ... Both the House and the Senate fall within the legislative branch, which is charged with Lawmaking, Representation, Legislative Oversight, and Constituency service. However, the government and the House have not agreed on some critical issues in defining culture and to what extent the state is allowed to regulate and govern cultural lives of the people that arouse a considerable polemic among anthropologists, activists, cultural workers, artists. Culture has evolved from the scholarly concept and become the political agenda which is reflected in a cultural policy. The concept of culture is no longer solely the remit of academia used by anthropologists to understand and comprehend the dynamic of ethnographic field. Consequently, the endeavor of defining culture should take account of the wider social and political context in which the concept of culture would be instilled in a public policy. In other worlds, the culture of cultural policy would also determine the concept of culture defined by the state in cultural policy. In this paper I would like to discuss the concept of culture which evolves in the courses of the deliberation of the draft bill on culture and the implication of a certain concept toward the Indonesian cultural diversity. This analysis will also reveal how the state imagines and understands the Indonesian national culture and the response of the non–state actors toward the state imagination. Throughout history both chambers have changed and both have similar powers when it comes to the people and states. The House and Senate may appear to be the same, in fact they are quite different in terms of their functions, organization and stature. The Senate and the House has many powers but both chambers have a certain amount of power for example the senate has the power to try all impeachments while the house serves as like a grand jury that may indict an official holder. I believe you should be very familiar with the Texas Legislature as you have served as a member of the Texas Legislature for eight years. However, the U.S. Legislature in Washington D.C. is very different from the Texas Legislature while having some similarities. I would like to list some of the similarities and differences between these two legislatures to help you in the transition as the Congress has changed overtime and thus, to help develop your Home Style. The modern Congress is a reformed Congress (Shaw, 2015:2). The power of the House of Representative was held in the hand of the Speaker in the early 1900s. However, a resolution was introduced by George Norris after leading the progressive Republicans and Democrats into a revolt against Joe Cannon, the Speaker, in 1910. The power was moved to the hands of the committee chairs, which were determined by seniority, after the revolt. (Shaw, 2015:3). The seniority system was challenged in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result, a greater role was placed on the Speaker of the House and the majority party on determining the assignment of the committee chairs. Moreover, the sub–committees had also become more important in the legislature. Later in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the wages of the Congress members and the number of staff had increased as a result of becoming more "professionalized". • 59. The Senate Should Be Abolished Of The Senate The Senate plays a key role in tandem with the House of Commons, in the operation of Canada's government, some people think that the Senate should be abolished; however without the Senate, "The right to bear arms" could become true for Canada. The Senate should be reformed; abolishing or keeping the Senate at its current state would be unjust. The current Senate is not elected, effective, nor equal. If the Senate is kept at its current state, it will continue to operate fine, however the Senate can be much more effective at what it does if it gets amended. Currently the Senate is not elected, equal, nor efficient. People who comprise the Senate are selected by the governor general on the advice of the Prime Minister, so those selected most likely will act in good intention towards the Prime Minister. The Senate, unlike the House was designed to represent Canada's regions, however it over–represents some provinces at the expense of others. For example currently, Quebec and Ontario each have 24 seats, the same amount of seats as the four Western provinces as a whole. Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional 29% of the seats. Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes to that. In some cases, like the issue of gun control, I am in support of republicans as they strongly oppose the use of guns and hand arms to control the crime. The state house of Texas requires a person to be a U.S. citizen, 21 old or over, 2 years resident of Texas and 1year resident prior to the elections. Watching over the past, the current representative for state house Matt Rinaldi is a republican. In 2012, the district was represented by Bennett Ratliff who was also a republican. Matt Rinaldi is proving his strong presence by winning the seat for two times in the election of 2014 and 2016. This shows that the republicans have very strong voter population in this district. • 63. Representation Of The House Of Representatives The legislature of the United States consists of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The bicameral system was created by the Founding Fathers in order to carry out one of the most imperative functions of Congress, representation amongst other function such as legislation, deliberation and scrutiny. The Senate ensures each state is equally represented with two congressmen, equally the House of Representatives also has to carry out the function of representation but its representatives unlike the Senate are proportioned to the population of the states for example California has 55 representatives however Alaska has 1. Even though representation is an important and well known function of the legislature the extent to which it is carried out can be argued to have declined in the subsequent years due to factors such as the expansion of the population. The role of representation was intended to be carried out in 13 states under the Founding Fathers however the increase to 50 has made this function increasingly difficult. The creation of the House of Representatives ensured the function of representation would be carried out as the house was proportioned to equally represent all the states. Having a set number of representatives in one states according to population ensures that the voices of that state's population can be heard effectively. The Framers' choice of a bicameral system was in part a choice to leverage two different representational schemes. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Senate Vs House Of Representatives The largest compromise in the U.S. Constitution is known as the Great Compromise. This was a compromise between two completely different plans on how the U.S. Legislature should be laid out. The framers of the constitution decided on a two chambered Legislature. Each chamber has many different requirements, structures, responsibilities, and powers. Because of these differences, the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is known as the lower house. These differences are why the Senate is known as the upper house, and the House of Representatives is called the lower house. According to the Constitution, to be a member of the Senate a candidate must be at least thirty years of age, be a citizen of the United States for nine years, and must live in the state at the time elected. To be a member of the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at least twenty–five years of age, must be a citizen of the United States for seven years, and must live in the state at the time elected. These different requirements support that the Senate is the upper house because the requirements needed to be in the Senate are stricter than those of the House. The structures also differ greatly. There are 435 members of the House and only 100 members of the Senate. Because of this, each individual member's vote in the Senate is worth more than each member of the House. Also a Senator's term lasts longer than a Representative's term; a Senator's term is six years and a Representative's is two. Because of this, Senators have more time to make and change legislation. Also if a House member makes changes that voters don't like, they can be replaced in under two years. In the Senate, however, if negative changes are made, there isn't anything voters can do for years and they can continue to make changes that are disagreeable to voters. The two chambers also have different responsibilities and powers that show that the Senate is the upper house. The House has the power to impeach government officials. They act as a "prosecutor". The Senate holds the trials of impeachment and acts as "judge and jury" (United States Senate). The Senate acts as the upper house because the House only brings issues involving impeachment to the attention of the Senate. It is the Senate who actually can impeach officials. The Senate also has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. House Of Representatives Vs Senate Essay Congress was created because the founding fathers were afraid of putting too much power given to only one individual would cause abuse of that power, and because the system of government needed the system of checks and balances (Ln, 4–2&3). When Congress was being made by the founding fathers the two separate political parties were arguing over how representation would be decided. The larger states wanted representation based on population, but the smaller states wanted equal representation for every state. The founding fathers made Congress a bicameral legislature for each of the ideas. The two houses are the House of Representatives and the Senate.
