Marriage And Hinduism
Chapter 9: Marriage and Hinduism
For Hindus, the marriage between two humans is a divine connection that is not restricted to a single lifetime. They believe that marriage extends
through several births and deaths, during which the married couple assists each other to attain liberation from Maya. The old saying "marriages are
made in heaven" is considered as a basic truth in Hinduism. Believers claim that the souls of a married couple united because their destinies are
entwined and they must go through several lives here on earth if they want to attain salvation.
In Hinduism, marriage is a connection between two souls. Also, they think that the gender of a person is not fixed. For example, the male might
become the female in his next life. It is also possible for the couple to become separated temporarily for one or two lifetimes. However, since their
souls are linked, they will be reunited.
Hindus believe that marriage is a sacred bond. They consider it as an obligation and a sacrament. An individual is expected to get married unless he
renounces this right and becomes a hermit. Marriage is an important part in the life of a Hindu, so they think of it as an essential goal. A female
Hindu ends her life as a maiden by getting married. She is required to leave her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many Hindu prayers are sung during the rite, while a musical group plays songs. Food and drinks are given to the guests to keep them entertained. In
general, alcoholic beverages and meat products are not served during this occasion. At the conclusion of the wedding ritual, the groom ties a holy
thread (called the "mangalsutram") or a necklace around the neck of his bride. He takes her hand and they walk seven steps while saying promises of
righteousness, friendship and loyalty. After that, the couple will entertain the guests and play some games to lighten the mood. This phase is followed

Hindu Weddings Essay
Marriage is the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and
maintaining a family. (Webster's Dictionary.) When a couple gets married they make a vow in front of their loved ones and their God to be together
for the rest of their lives and abide by each other. In the Hindu religion, which is the third largest religion in the world, weddings are very sacred,
therefore a wedding ceremony takes a lot of time and effort and it is composed of different rituals and ceremonies. The Hindu marriage, "Lagna Vivah"

Therefore you can never marry someone outside your caste even if you are truly in love with someone outside your caste your marriage will never
be favored. If a couple still goes ahead and proceeds with marrying even though they are from two different castes, there family will basically
disown them and so they will have to deal with a lot of public pressure from their family as well as outsiders. Today the idea of arranged marriages
is overlooked as a forced marriage from other society's point of views. Hindus arrange their children to meet partners they think are well suitable
for them but this does not mean the son or daughter has to automatically marry this person they have been introduced to. They have a choice
whether to go along with it or not. They are not forced at any point to marry this person. Years ago parents arranged their children marriages while
their children were very young and even babies. They understood that if the kids grew up together over the years they will learn everything there
was to know about each other and so everything will basically work out to their advantage. Even though the girl was practically married at a very
young age she did not have to live with her husband until she was matured, until then she will just visit him and his family. The wedding will occur
before puberty, so the girl will

Ap Human Geo Nepal Essay
In the video "Into Nepal – A Journey through the Kathmandu Valley," there were many concepts that were easily recognizable due to the information
that was given during the first semester of the AP Human Geography course.
The Hindu people who are pictured in the video segment, Budanilkantha: AHindu Wedding, are practicing a custom of many Hindu people. A custom
is the frequent repetition of an act, to the extent that it becomes a characteristic of the group of people performing the act. Although not all Hindus
participate in arranged marriages, the acts that occur during the marriage are very similar. Before the wedding takes place, the bride receives a jewel
that marks the central part in her hair which is a signal of her marriage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hinduism is a major religious and cultural tradition of the Indian subcontinent, comprising a diverse family of devotional and ascetic cults and
philosophical schools, all sharing a belief in reincarnation and involving the worship of a large pantheon of deities. In the Pashupatinath valley
region, there is a cremation temple which is a part of the landscape of the dead in Nepal. A landscape of the dead is a place where burial rituals are
carried out, which may vary by religion. In Pashupatinath, when a woman's husband or family dies, she wears white. The attendees of the funeral
offer the soul of the deceased body incense, food, and water so that it doesn't feel troubled on its journey towards a new form. The deceased's mouth
is then lit on fire by the eldest brother, which is said to purify his/her soul. In the landscape, there are also many river cleaners who pan for gold
fillings that come from the teeth of the deceased.
You can find many saddus also in the Pashupatinath valley. They are people who have come to the last stage in their lives and are spending the rest
of their lives without any material possessions and living in prayer. They spend their days meditating and doing yoga which is said to help their
concentration and purification. Many of the saddus have probably made a pilgrimage to the valley. A pilgrimage is a journey to a place considered
sacred for religious purposes.

The Importance Of Muslim Wedding Ceremony
Muslim Wedding Ceremony Muslim Wedding Ceremony the wedding ceremony is always celebrations no matter what religious people have there is
always have enjoying movement. Muslim wedding ceremony was different from the Hindu ceremony, but that's what I want to experience with. Here I
came in Muslim wedding ceremony with lots of guest and relatives that were invited. As I walk through they welcome me with red flower I was
little nervous because they were stranger to me. There were lots of people coming with the gift or with their friends and family. The wedding was
in the church Conner side of the forest with lots of green trees. The place inside was very beautiful hanging cross the red, yellow and white flower.
People were started to take a picture with their friend and relatives. As I look closer as I could, I saw that they have very special place where they
both can sit together and follow their rules. Every guest has a smile on their face and it was very joyful movement. Muslim people followed the
traditional Islamic wedding rituals include different kind of aspects the wedding such as, audience, Maher, vows blessings, color, Party. In

by gender. They had one place that is just for a man and another was for women. They give so much importance to their audience that was invited to
the ceremony. They will significantly follow that rule because it was from the old generation to today's generations. Later on the audience is required
to not wear the shoes during the ceremony they had some place that they can keep their shoes in the safe place. The audience is required for joining

The families set up activities so they can bond and get to know each other.
One week leading up to the wedding is a very busy time for both the bride, groom and both families, they hold many rituals and traditional events.
Firstly there is Haldi, this is a holy bath where turmeric, oil and water is applied by married women to both the bride and groom. This is like a spa
/ beauty treatment, it makes their skin glow and is intended to make them look beautiful for the big day and to protect them from evil spirits.
Secondly there is Mehendi, this is an all ladies party where they apply henna designs to the bride 's hands, feet, arms and legs. It is said that the
darker the henna the more the husband will love his wife. After this ceremony the bride does not leave the house until the wedding day. The ladies
who attended this are usually close friends or relatives and it is traditional to sing songs which bless the bride for a prosperous marriage. After the
marriage the bride does not have to do any housework until the Mehendi has faded. Thirdly there is the Sangeet tradition, this is an evening of musical
entertainment hosted by the bride 's family. This is a ceremony where they celebrate the bride and reminisce about her youthful days. They sing folk
song and dance, after this they snack on sweet traditional dishes. The fourth ritual is Janavasam, this is where the groom is paraded around the town

Essay On Rites Of Passage
Rites of Passage are "rituals that mark a person passage from one identity to the next" (Robins, Cummings and McGarry 2016, 61). Marriage is the
15th and most important rite of passage in a Hindu's life (Holme and Bowker 1994, 72). This rite of passage is known as "vivaha" and the rituals
conducted during the ceremony vary from each region in India. "Satpadi" translates to "Seven Steps" and is the final ritual of the "vivaha". This occurs
during the marriage ceremony of one 's life where the bride and groom tie a piece of their clothing together and walk around the sacred fire seven times,
where each round is symbolic as it holds a lifetime vow (Holme and Bowker 1994, 82). I have witnessed this at every Hindu wedding I have attended

In Victor Turner 's terms "Betwixt and Between" (Turner 1979). The final stage is known when the passage is accomplished, and the individual
has transitioned into a new identity (Turner 1979). Victor Turner used Genneps representation of the three phases of rites of passage to explain the
transition from "boyhood to manhood" with the example of "Ndembu of Zambia"(Robbins, Cummings and McGarry 2016, 62). Victor Turner,
constructed on Van Gennep 's model of the three stages of rites of passage and focussed on liminality. His work proclaims that marriage rites can
transform people from one family fortune to another one and promote a culture to people who may have been complete strangers in the community.
In Hindu culture, there are 16 rites of passages, with the 13th, marriage, being the most important one. These rites are known as "Samskaras". For
Hindu women, marriage marks the end of being a maiden, she must leave her parents house and begin life again in her husbands home as a married
woman. The rituals associated with Hindu weddings fit with Van Gennep's model of rites of passage of the change from being a maiden to a married
woman. The bride is made to change her first name before the actual marriage ceremony takes place, this is an important aspect of Hindu weddings.

The Importance Of Culture On The Culture Of Nepal
Pre–interation
Nepal is known to be a multi–religious country with religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Muslim, Christianity and other religions found there.
However, 80 percent of the population of Nepal practices Hinduism. Which leads me to believe that the Hinduism has to have a great impact on the
culture of Nepal. Hinduism is a male dominated religion and women often play a secondary role. There are many restrictive conditions that a Nepali
Hindu woman has to live by. However, there is overwhelming respect for women because they considered gifts from the gods and aspects of pure
energy. Hindus believe in the idea of karma and rebirth, the idea that each is reincarnated so that the soul can be purified.

Nepali and Haitian culture in the sense that both could be viewed as having stricter values than the western culture that most of us is familiar with. But
more importantly the way that religion is embedded within the culture is the most comparable. I believe that's where the similarities ended and the
differences began. Upon asking Aastha if she would be interested in being interviewed she immediately began to plan what we could discussed. She

Essay about Marriage Rituals Hinduism and Muslim
Marriage is a significant social event in contemporary society. It is a means of building new bonds between two individuals and their subsequent
families. The foundations of memorable weddings are built on those that bring often–distant family and friends together for the occasion, while dressed
in their most sophisticated attire, surrounded by elegant flowers, a night of dancing, captured through the lens of an exceptional photographer.
Although Hinduism and Islam are two extremely distinctive religions, their matrimonial customs do share some comparable elements, like most other
cultural wedding ceremonies. In both religions, they are devotedly obedient concerning religious and cultural practices in their marital ceremonies.

As well, Hindus and Muslims normally have their weddings taking place in their homes or in the Mosque. Hindu weddings can last up to a few days
or even to a week. On the other hand, Muslim weddings last only one for a day.
According to Hindu doctrine, marriages are not considered binding and completed without completion of certain traditional rituals by the bride and
groom together. There are eight types of marriages in Hinduism culture according to the Laws of Manusmriti. All eight symbolize different groups of
people and their beliefs in humanity. The eight types include: Brahma, Daiva, Arsha, Prajapatya, Gandharva, Asura, Rakshasa, Paishacha. The first four
are considered proper (Brahma, Daiva, Arsha, Prajapatya), whereas the last four are considered not to have religious sanctions (Gandharva, Asura,
Rakshasa, Paishacha). The "Brahma" marriage is when the father gives up his daughter to a man after the man has spoiled her with costly jewels
and presents. Secondly, the "Daiva" marriage is when the daughter is given away with ornaments to a priest at a religious ceremony. The third type
of marriage, the "Arsha" marriage is when the father gives up his daughter to a man after receiving a bull/cow from the groom. A forth type of
marriage is the "Prajapatya" marriage and this is involves the father giving up his daughter to a man after bestowing them with his blessings and
addressing them: "May both of you perform together your duties." The

Personal Experience: Hindu Weddings
Have you ever gone to a wedding that was outside of the norm for you – how was your experience? Weddings are events that connect the bond of love
between two people for the rest of their lives. There are countless options and ways to get married and each have their own traditions. Indian weddings
are very traditional and are a very big celebration. As Marriage Clix exclaims, "Indian weddings tend to be very vibrant and elaborate affairs" (Indian
Wedding Blog). Indian weddings are definitely an amazing event because they have a vast variety of cultural traditions that are performed, the
luxuries are quite exquisite, and the arrangements and pre/after parties are very exciting. To start off, the grandeurs of Hindu weddings are quite
interesting. In many Hindu weddings, the bride and groom's apparel is very cultural and elegant. The bride wears a long intricately designed dress
that is wrapped. It is called a saree or a lehenga. The bride's outfit will usually be in red and white, and so will the groom's, because red is the most
auspicious color in the Hindu religion as it resembles the color of a new life. The groom will also wear a traditional outfit called a sherwani, and
formal headdress called a sehra. Flowers are integrated majorly in Hindu weddings. They are used during a Pooja, which is the worship of the various
Hindu gods, as a sign of respect and prayer so that the gods will protect their family and household, bestowing prosperity. Divya Patwari states that

Weddings, A rite of passage
"A rite of passage is a public ceremony that marks, recognizes, celebrates or is believed to actually cause a change in a person and her or his status,
usually brought about or related to increasing age" (Peoples, Bailey). Almost every culture has rituals that signal a change in life. Marriage is one of the
most common rites of passage in any culture. Weddings and marriage ceremonies are clear transitions from adolescence to adulthood. "Some form
of marriage is known to have existed in all human societies. Its traditional function in most of these societies has been to stabilize sexual relations
and to unite a man and a woman in order to provide care for the young. In addition, marriage has linked and allowed for economic exchanges between
different kin groups and has served as the primary coming of age ritual for women" (Nelson). In America we are known for throwing lavish
ceremonies and expensive parties to celebrate the union between two people. I've attended quite a few weddings and participated in one during my
lifetime thus far. Most weddings in the American culture follow the same itinerary.
Before a wedding ceremony is thought of or takes place the couple preparing for marriage usually separate from their families and begin to make a
home together. During the separation phase from each of his or her families an engagement occurs. A typical engagement consists of the man

indu wisdom, which inspires humans to live the ideals of compassion and nonviolence, is captured in one word, ahimsa. In Sanskrit, himsa is doing

If Homo sapiens is to survive his present predicament, he will have to rediscover these two primary ethical virtues. In order to understand the
pervasive practice of nonviolence in Hinduism, one must investigate the meaning of life. Why is life sacred? For India's ancient thinkers, life is seen as
the very stuff of the Divine, an emanation of the Source and part of a cosmic continuum. The nature of this continuum varies in Hindu thought. Some
hold that the individual evolves up through life forms, taking more and more advanced incarnations which culminate in human life. Others believe that
according to one's karma and samskaras, the process can even be reversed, that is, one can achieve a "lower" birth. Even those Indians who do not
believe in reincarnation of an individual still hold that all that exists abides in the Divine. They further hold that each life form–even water and
trees–possesses consciousness and energy. Whether the belief is that the life force of animals can evolve into human status, or that the opposite can
also take place, or simply that all things enjoy their own consciousness, the result is the same–a reverence for life. Not all of Earth's one billion Hindus
are living in a perfect state of ahimsa all of the time. Sometimes conditions at hand may force a situation, a regrettable

The Sacred Ritual Of Marriage
Rituals can be described as an outward expression of inward intention (Rituals, Rites and Festivals, n.d.). Rituals have a prominent role in today's
society as they enable people of all religions to communicate and form a stronger connection with their God or Gods (Rituals, Rites and Festivals,
n.d.). Over the years rituals have evolved because society's values have changed and modern culture has had an influence on them. The sacred ritual of
marriage in Catholic Christianity and Hinduism, while superficially different, are essentially the same. This is particularly evident when analysing
similarities and differences in each faith's perception of the purpose of marriage, the structure of the two wedding ceremonies, the symbols involved in
the two ceremonies, and the role of family in the Catholic and Hindu wedding ceremony.
An area of similarity within Catholic weddings and Hindu weddings is the purpose of marriage. Both Catholicism and Hinduism represent the
purpose of marriage through their sacred texts and traditional ideas. In Catholicism the sacrament of Marriage is represented as a sacred bond
between a man and a woman that pledges them to be faithful lifelong spouses, loving and caring for each other and lovingly raising and guiding the
children they bring into the world (Stoutzenberger, 2000). The emphasis that is placed on having children is seen in the Bible when God says to Adam
and Eve, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" (Genesis 1:28). Similarly the

In Hinduism the soul is immortal while the body is subject to birth and death. Samsara is considered to be a state of wandering and is caused due
to being ignorant of one's true purpose. This idea is directly linked to karma which means action, and also the consequences of the action. It is said
that every action has a reaction and it is believed in the religion of Hinduism that it determines your next incarnation, which is basically being reborn.
When the cycle of rebirth comes to an end, a person is said to have attained liberation which is moksha. In other words karma is the results you bring
upon yourself, good or bad, based on your actions. And also reincarnation which is the belief that the soul, upon death, comes back to earth in
another body or form which gives the soul the chance to resolve all bad karma that it puts out so the soul can eventually be free and gain liberation
from the cycle of rebirth. In this paper the religion of Hinduism has been further explored. The societal and cultural influences that have made it vital

Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage is one of the most sacred and intimate rituals or celebrations that exist in all religions. It is often seen as an important and a defining step in
your life. Traditionally, marriage is a ritual and ceremony that celebrates the official joining of two people by law. This definition ofmarriage varies
from culture to culture since marriage can be viewed differently for them. The two religions of Hinduism and Buddhism both allow marriages, but have
many similarities and differences between them in their wedding ceremonies, in the roles of husband and wife, and in their beliefs on divorce.
Wedding ceremonies are often seen as a big deal and is a cherished moment in the couple's relationship. Many rituals and symbols are present in a
wedding ceremony and are often unique to the couple's religion or culture. In Hinduism, wedding ceremonies are a big deal and has many
components to create a very beautiful, and sacred ceremony. The ceremony often lasts for hours, days and weeks since there are a number of
ceremonies held prior to the wedding day. Some of the ceremonies include the Misri (ring ceremony), the Mendhi Party, Raas Garba and the Ghari
Puja. Hindu weddings traditionally take place outside, in nature, under a canopy called the mandap. An important symbol in the ceremony is to light a

perceives how happiness can be achieved. Such is true for the conception of happiness between my culture, the American culture, and the Indian

Both bodies have differing views of happiness, but they still uphold the their individuality. Likewise, I too am able to embrace my personal perception
of happiness because my society is one that embraces individualism. It can be said that my culture thoroughly embraces Aristotle 's definition of
happiness due to the fact that it preaches the importance of every individual being the sole passenger and conductor when it come to riding the train that
is the pursuit of happiness. In other words, the pursuit of happiness is in the hands of the individual. No matter how one believes they can achieve
happiness in my culture, the fact remains that it is widely recognized that happiness is based on an individual's actions and viewpoints.
In contrast, the conception of happiness in Indian culture is a combination of both individualist and collectivist viewpoints. From the individualistic
viewpoint of happiness in Indian culture, an individual has the power to pursue their own happiness and do whatever they deem conducive to their
well–being. According to Kumar (2003), it is believed in Indian culture that "man should do whatever is possible to enhance pleasure and avoid pain
. . . one could beg, borrow or steal or even murder . . ." (p. 2). In simple terms, one should do whatever is in their power to achieve ultimate happiness.
This is an individualistic viewpoint because the Indian culture trusts an individual to make decisions that will benefit them. In a

The Influences of Nature In Hinduism
In every civilization there is a main a religion and an influence of that religion. In India the main religion is Hinduism and Hinduism is influenced by
the nature around the country. Christopher G. Framarin proposed his theory on how nature influences India in his journal, "The value of nature in India (
Hindu) traditions. Framarin explains his ideas on how to achieve moksa and what animals have effect on the moksa cycle. He also places other
philosophers' ideas into his journal and thoroughly explains the ideas in detail and how he feels about them. The traditions of Hindusim that are
influenced by nature has an effect on everything they believe in. Ahimsa is doing good deeds or non–harm to anything in this world. Through ahimsa
Hindu people can achieve moska. However, there are more rules than just being nice to work through the caste system in Hinduism. Even though
ahimsa is non–harmful there are many strict ideas on what exactly is harmful. Himsa can postpone moska, himsa is the deed of doing harm or
injury to another being. In the caste system the way someone can rise up the top and become a divine is for him or her to perform ahimsa deeds
and through each reincarnation to step up in the caste. The Hindu's use a form of measurement when figuring out if the move up or down in the
system. Every ahima deed someone does it produces a merit and for every himsa deed it produces a demerit. If so many merits are achieved moksa will

rich ruler, all while knowing that he is giving up his righteous turn to rule the kingdom since he is the oldest of the four sons of the king. Instead, he
willingly goes off into exile – forest infested with evil spirits whom he battles with the power of good and defeats. As in most of the Eastern world,
this example of respect being paid to elders, parents, authorities (no matter what one is commanded to do) is very important in one's 'faith'; and the fact
that one successfully wards off evil, gives him/her the title of a cultural model hero, just as seen in Rama's case. Rama's casual attitude about going off
into the forest for fourteen years also shows his asceticism – the will to give up his material, emotional and physical attachments. His peaceful and
patient attitude towards his life is vivid due to his enduring wisdom. For he goes beyond the material and physical world

The Hindu Marriage Ceremony
Marriage is highly thought of and a very important rite of passage in the Hindu culture. There are many aspects and procedures included in a Hindu
Marriage ceremony. Some of which will be discussed in this essay. The Hindu culture is very traditional and religious, especially when it comes to
Marriage. Marriage is a ceremony that celebrates a woman and a man's love for one another. Marriage is the transition from the first stage of life of
education and learning, to the second stage of life, building a household and raising a family. The bride and groom must go through a few processes
before they are pronounced 'married.' The ceremony is put in place to ensure the women and men getting married know the commitments that need to
be abided by in order to be a married couple. In a Hindu Marriage Ceremony, there are many features throughout the ceremony that symbolise particular
things.
Symbols are very important in a Hindu Marriage Ceremony. The bride of thewedding often wears clothes or jewellery to symbolise or remind her of
particular roles that come with a marriage. An example of a symbol that women wear to symbolise they are married is toe rings. Married Hindu
women wear toe rings to remind themselves of their marital status and the restrictions that come with being a married woman. Some other symbols
worn by a woman is bangles. A married Hindu woman is prohibited from leaving her arms bare once she is married, therefore, she must wear bangles
to signify that she is

Hindu weddings can be very festive (Blanchard). Everyone wear bright colored clothes and eat spicy or vegetarian food (Blanchard). They even eat
flat bread, pastries, cake, and ice cream (Blanchard). Normally, guest send the newlyweds money in an envelope days later (Blanchard). The
weddings normally last at least three days (Blanchard). At first, the groom comes in on a white horse and that's when the guest dance around him. The
bride and her family meet the groom and his family to exchange garlands (Blanchard). Afterwards, there is a crazy party and lots of dancing
(Blanchard). Hindu weddings are one of the most important part in a Hindu's life time (Rosinsky 32–33). It just shows that they are tied together like a
knot (Rosinsky 32–33). They step around sacred fires and recite prayers and have wishes for their new life (Rosinsky 32–33) . They also have songs
and rituals that go along during the wedding (Rosinsky 32–33). This is all the stuff that you may find in a Hindu Wedding.
First is the pre–wedding of it all, the start of the wedding. This includes multiple steps. You start off with the engagement ceremony which is also
called the ring ceremony ("India Wedding Preparations"). Next is the Tilak ceremony and this is where the brides brother applies the Tilak to the
groom along with gifts ("India Wedding Preparations"). Then you have the Sagai ceremony where the bride and groom both exchange their gifts to one
another ("India Wedding Preparations"). (This

Indian Wedding Rituals And Traditional Rituals
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue..." A wedding is a ceremony of marriage that is celebrated across cultures. It is
one of the only rituals that many of the world's cultures have in common. However, each culture has their own unique traditions when dealing with
marriage. Because India is a more religious nation than the United States, they tend to stick to a more traditional regimen of rituals and customs. While
most weddings in the United States have developed into more modernized versions of the ancient ceremony, Hindu weddings in India continue to be
very traditional and religious. Weddings are also taken much more seriously in India than they are in the United States. The Hindu (India's major

It is said to be one of the most enjoyable and extravagant events of the wedding. It is one of the less serious events of the wedding, and a great chance
to have fun and get to know the new family in a more relaxed setting. The Mehendi ceremony consists of more traditional rituals that are an integral
and exciting part of the pre–wedding. Mehendi is one of the oldest forms of body art. It is a term derived from the Sanskrit word, 'mendhika' which
refers to the henna plant. The bride is covered in these intricate Mehendi designs, henna tattoos, as part of the Hindus' customary sixteen
adornments. Traditionally, the groom's initial is included somewhere in the detailed designs of florals and paisley print that adorn the bride.
Henna is known for its cooling properties and was originally supposed to help calm the bride's nerves when applied to her hands and feet. After
Mehendi, the bride does not step out of the house until the next day, when Var Mala begins. Var Mala is a main wedding day ceremony in which
the bride and groom exchange garlands. The groom's friends attempt to prevent the bride from putting her garland around the groom's neck to tease
her, while the bride's friends help her do the same. Everyone enjoys the tussle between the two wedding parties, and the groom finally succeeds in his
endeavors. This signifies that the bride has accepted the groom as her husband. After Var Mala, the couple gets blessed by the elders of both families.

RELIGIONS PAPER– (Need Title)
Extravagant clothing, succulent victuals, exquisite flowers, spectacular photography and many other grand decorations are the foundation of a Hindu
marriage. Hindu marriages, like most other cultural wedding ceremonies, are deeply concerned with their religious rituals and customs. Most
ceremonies in the Hindu culture are family oriented with great emphasis on entertainment and inspiration. Also, off course, the amount of decorations
and the extent to which the rituals are carried out depends greatly on the class of the families in society. Wealthier families are inclined to spend vast
amounts of money into the wedding ceremony to make it extremely extravagant, whereas the lower class families tend to ... Show more content on

There are a number of pre–marriage celebrations that are carried out, including the engagement and other days on which families and friends get
together and rejoice. Other pre–marriage celebrations consist of Mehndi, Sangeet, and Tilak. Mehndi, also known as henna, plays a great role in the
wedding celebrations. There is a whole day devoted to the Mehndi Ceremony, which is performed by the bride's side. There was a banquet hall
booked for the Mehndi ceremony and close to three hundred guests were invited. There was singing and dancing to traditional music, remarkable
diversity of foods, exquisite decorations with an elegant assortment of mostly yellow flowers. The bride's friends and relatives performed wonderful
dances. The girls applied henna on the bride's hands and feet, making traditional designs and patterns. The henna is supposed to symbolize passion
and the strength of love in the marriage and so the bride has to keep it on for a long time. The bride was dressed in light yellow and white clothes, the
colours symbolizing purity. After the Mehndi Ceremony, the bride is not allowed to the leave the house until on her marriage day. Between the
Mehndi Ceremony and the marriage day there is a night devoted to Sangeet. Sangeet merely just means music. It is mostly considered the most
enjoyable and entertaining night as friends and family just dance all night long. Sangeet was held at the bride's house and mostly the friends and

The Indian History And The Status Of Women
The Indian History and the Status of Women :
Women's security is closely connected to global security still they suffer simply because they differ in gender. According to the UN Commission on
Human Security, 'the security of one person, one community, one nation rests on the decisions of many others, sometimes fortuitously, sometimes
precariously''. However, in the interrelated world everyone is influenced either positively or negatively by the decisions of individuals or states
(UNIFEM
2003). To understand the status of the Indian women it is important to understand the history gender discrimination in the country.
In 1947, the Indian history of violence against women was perceivable in the violent nature of the nation's partition. The women were raped,
abducted and their bodies were used as a medium of men's evil expression as Indian Hindus and the Pakistani Muslims battled for power to defend
their countries. This tactic of humiliating the opponent by using women's bodies as a tool of power dominance is still being practiced in the Indian
society and is visible in the cases of Devi and Sori (Dobhal 2011: 598).
Mother India, commonly termed as Bharat Mata in Sanskrit is the national personification of
India as a mother goddess which is widely depicted as a woman clad in a saffron sari holding the national flag. The position of women was high in
India and some might argue that degrading positioning of women in the society is influenced by the impact of colonialism.

An Indian Hindu wedding is strictly observed according to the ancient cultural norms laid down in the Vedas in the Indian society a wedding is not

Kanyadaan – is a ritual, which apart from being vital to the ceremony, tugs at the emotional cord of the prides of the parents.

Physical Address of Time Square in New York City:...
Benedict Anderson laid out his definition for nationalism and made use of the phrase "imagined community," not even he could envision how
globalization would affect the globe. This essay is called Manhattan, NY 10036 because this is the physical address of Time Square in New York

entire world is intertwined and essentially one giant imagined community thanks in large part to advanced technology and the phenomena of
globalization. New York City is the media capital of the world and Time square is arguably one of the most popular media attractions to see. The
worlds address should be Manhattan, NY 10036 because as a global community all roads go through New York City and has been for many years now.
Globalization has been seen in the world through examples of economics, culture, technology and many other forms. People, whether they know it or
not, will be connected to a person they don't know in some sort of way. Anderson in his book on "Imagined Communities" says "It [Community] is

Indian Wedding Traditions : Ancient India
Ancient Indian Wedding Traditions Can you imagine a society where brides are sold to grooms and aren't expected to date before they marry? In
ancient India, this was proposed as the norm for marriages. Marriages were more commonly seen as a financial deal rather than the joining of two
individuals who are in love. We may laugh and say, "How crazy were they back then?" but some of these ancient traditions still hold some value in
India's society today. Through ostentatious detail, ancient Indian weddings took a lot of time, money, and effort to produce. Ancient Indian parents
often married their daughters off at a young age. The average age of marriage in ancient India was sixteen for boys and even younger for girls
(Uberoi 327). In other societies, it is permitted for women to stay single. In ancient India, this was prohibited. It was expected that girls be "married
off before they became nubile" (Auboyer 177). Most parents wanted to marry off their daughters as early as they could for several reasons. If a
woman lost her virginity, she was automatically unmarriageable, which spiked numbers of prostitutes and lesbians. To have a lesbian or prostitute
daughter would be shameful to the whole family. By marrying off their daughters at a young age, the chance of their becoming these two things was
almost impossible. Another reason for parents to marry off their daughters at such a young age was because, unlike boys, girls were completely
financially reliable on their fathers

The Indian Wedding Diary
A wedding is a lot more than just an occasion. It is that special day when two souls in love, vow to protect and be with each other forever. In most
cultures of the world, weddings are a closed family affair and just a one day celebration, at the most, however, an Indian wedding is way beyond that.
Have you ever been to an Indian wedding before? If you haven't, then you for sure are missing out on something spectacular. An Indian wedding is
much more than just the bride and the groom getting married; it is a celebration of two families becoming one and is definitely not a closed family affair.
Desi weddings are a gala galore
An Indian wedding, or a Desi wedding, is a joyous and lavish celebration with exuberant crowds, participating in numerous ceremonies for almost a
week. But the flip side of this extravaganza is that months of preparation the two families deal with and the fact that these weddings are an
expensive affair, often turns this celebration into a stressful process for them, as they have to take care of every minute detail for it to be picture
perfect. After all, who wouldn't wish to have a wedding that is perfect in every sense, not only for the bride and the groom, but for all the guests that
put in special efforts to join for this larger than life celebration of yours.

Muslim and Hindu Wedding Ceremony
INTRODUCTION:
The Islamic and Hindu religions have an array of similarities and differences regarding their customs and laws in relation to the 'wedding ceremony'.
Within Islam, the wedding ceremony is believed to be both a religious and social obligation to get married. As a result, there is a great weight placed
on religious, social and cultural dimensions of the ceremony which tends to be simple in nature, paralleling Islamic beliefs. Hindus also place a lot of
importance on marriage ceremonies which signify customs, rituals and elaborate celebrations. However, a key difference lies in the fact that Islamic
marriages are seen as contractual agreements, whereas Hindu marriages are perceived to be sacrilegious.

The Hindu service is performed by a male Brahmin priest ('Pundit'), in accordance with the holy verses ('mantras') from the Vedas– the Hindu Holy
Book. Often the ceremony can be conducted in Sanskrit which gets its roots from Hinduism and embraces a rich tradition of poetry as well as practical
and philosophical texts.
The Venue
An Islamic wedding ceremony can take place in many places apart from a Mosque, even though a Mosque is highly preferred. Before the
ceremony, the bride and groom should find out whether it's possible to video and take photos of the event. Flowers and ornaments are not allowed
in the Mosque even though the bride and groom are decorated with flowers for the service. If the ceremony takes place in a venue which isn't a
Mosque, the bride and groom have more freedom to decorate, providing they seek advice from the local 'Imam', of what is appropriate.
The Hindu marriage usually takes in the bride's hometown or city. The venue is generally a town or community hall, or a hotel, depending on the
budget of the bride's family. There are often blessings in the temple before or after the service.
Wedding Attire
Customarily, the Arab Muslim bride wears a simple white dress and veil, very similar to the Christian faith. An Asian Muslim bride however, is much
more colourful and wears glittering clothes, plenty of jewellery and flower garlands around her. The hands and feet of the bride are often decorated
with henna ('Mehndi'). The

Different Types And Patterns Of The World
It is early in the morning, and women in Hindu families all over the world are preparing to begin their day. As the women in these families, they have
many duties and rituals that they perform daily for them and their families. After washing up, they clean the house and make sure that everything is
properly decorated. Next, they prepare the place that they are going to perform a ritual where they make something called a Kolam.
Kolams are made in many different places, there are different types and patterns, and there are many reasons that Kolams are said to be made. First, I
want to look at what they actually are: A kolam is a drawing that is typically done at the entrance of a house and is created from riceflour. Kolams are
not only made for the entrance of a house however. Kolams are also made for things other than every day activities such as weddings and in front of
temples, which are considered sacred kolams that are not to be touched. Kolams are drawn for festivals and many other special events. Although there
are several traditional patterns, kolams do not always have a pattern and the creativity of the drawing is left up to whomever is drawing it. Kolam is
practiced only by women and is taught to the younger girls in the family by the mothers. They are very intricate drawings and there are certain ways in
which the women go about drawing them.
The place that the women prepare for the kolam is cleaned and then dampened with water in hopes that the dried flour

The general idea of the samskaras is that their practice surrenders the human soul to the service of god.
Atri writes, "By birth every one is a shudra, by samskars he becomes a Dvija (twice–born). By learning, he becomes a Vipra and by realizing Brahman,
he attains the status of a Brahmana."
Symbolism has a significant role in the performance of samskaras, as it does in the entirety of the Hindu religion. Both materialistic and action based
symbols are abundantly obvious in each samskara, and too numerous to mention. Examples include the use of Audumbar branches, or fig branches,
which stand for prosperity. The vatu (student) at upanayana and the bride at a wedding instructed to stand on a rock signifying stability and firmness.
Touching of the heart in upanayana between teacher and student and in marriage between bride and groom, indicates residence of God and virtues of
love and harmony. Mass of rice indicates abundance and prosperity. Eating together means fusion of hearts, grasping the hand (panigrahana) indicates
assumption of responsibilities.

Hinduism And The Indian Culture
After reading the article, I think rituals have some basic structures of meaning, and there are number of ways to show that rituals are meaningful. In the
following thesis I choose Hinduism as an example to show how rituals are meaningful, how it relates to the living context of the Indian people, how the
Indians enact the Hindu rituals, and so on.
India is a country full of mysteries and differences. It has a long history, a profound yet unique culture, with diversified nationalities, races, religions,
languages and a huge population. The pursuit of secularism and inveteracy of sectarianism have brought huge influence to the Indian society. As the
mainstream culture in India, Hinduism plays an important role in the Indian society and has dominated almost 2000 years of its history. Although in the
following years since, the Indian culture gradually becomes a combination of different races, religions and languages, Hinduism still remains to be the
key to dig into the development of the culture and society of India.
First, the Hindu's worship of the imperishability of gods is the spiritual power for the Indians' faith and persistence in overcoming difficulties and
obstacles in the long history of development.
There are numerous gods in Hinduism, in which the most important ones including the Creator Brahma, the Preserver Vishnu and the Destroyer Siva.

The Scriptures Of Hindu Culture And Philosophy
The Bhagavad–Gita or simply Gita, conceivably the most recognized of all nonpareil scriptures of Hindu culture and philosophy, is universally
perceived as one of the world's ethical literatures. The Sanskrit title, Bhagavad–Gita, is commonly construed as "Song of the Lord." The Gita is
incorporated into the sixth book of the longest Hindu classic, Mahabharata, although it is known to be a subsequent accretion to the epic, which stands
on its own distinction. The ideology encapsulated in the Bhagavad Gita, doing action with detachment from the consequences is relevant and vital to
our understanding of way of life even in the contemporary western world. The teachings of the Gita assist people to manage their states of mental
agitation, desires and emotions which will lead them to take right decisions followed by right actions. This certainly explains its immense recognition
both in the East and the West. Distinguished philosophers, intellectuals, and scientists have conceded that the Bhagavad–Gita presents profound
wisdom. Gandhi once proclaimed:
When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad–Gita and find a
verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and
new meanings from it every day.

Have You Ever Wondered If You Have Lived More Than Once?
Have you ever wondered if you have lived more than once? Or what happens after death? Many believe that you continue to live after death, but
how is it possible and why so? Today I will inform you about the concept of reincarnation. For some of us, like myself, have had dreams or images
of places or things that we have never seen, in person with our own eyes, in our current lifetime. Then we see these images in a picture online and
feel like we have been there or have some sort of connection with them. Many say that this is due to our past lives. As in we have lived before in a

First, Hindus take reincarnation very seriously and that is what influences their everyday actions. After reading the article, "Reincarnation as a
Concept", issued in the Journal for Spiritual and Consciousness Studies in 2014, the author, Michael O'Dell, explains a common Hindu belief is that "the
soul which has manifested as you, has previously incarnated as an animal and may well do so again in the future." This is one of the reasons why
devout Hindus strive not to harm any bug or animal, since that creature may be a reincarnation of a deceased relative or friend.
They also see reincarnation as a trapped cycle of one 's own bad karma. Karma is a belief that every good and bad returns to the individual as a
reward or a punishment. They belief that the individual has an eternal soul that goes through reincarnation as many times as it takes until it reaches
liberation. Only way to reach this is by doing good and paying all your dues. Any wrong or bad done in that lifetime will lead to reincarnation. It is
pretty much as getting a second chance. They strive to reach liberation because they see it as a free ticket out of the trapped cycle.
Buddhism believes that reincarnation, referred to as rebirth, is processed by desires which keeps the cycle going. A cycle that no one can escape and
that never ends and may be infinite until liberation occurs. They defined

The Indian village of Andaloor abides by the rules of a traditional Hindu marriage. First, both parents and their son would discuss the prerequistes that

requirement would be a similar economic and religious background. Because Andaloor is in South India, the prospective bride might also be a blood

India, although adherence to the 'norm' is still a dominant factor in marriage in India. The family of the man would attempt to find a match, and after

Meaning of Ahimsa Essay
Meaning of Ahimsa Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term that translates roughly into non–injury to living beings or dynamic harmlessness. Ahimsa tends to evoke
images of monks wearing cloths over their faces to avoid breathing microscopic beings and sweeping the insects off the path in front of them as they
walk so they won't accidentally crush one under their feet. One cannot easily live in today's world without causing some harm to other beings – but that
does not mean we shouldn't try to keep it to a minimum. There are some relatively easy steps you can take to reduce the suffering in your wake.

There is no power greater than Ahimsa. The practice of Ahimsa develops will power to a considerable degree. The practice of Ahimsa will make

The Hindu Wedding
The Hindu pre–wedding, wedding, and post–wedding have many different observable and intricate aspects, traditions and rituals. Planning a
traditional Hindu wedding just like Christian weddings can differ between couples as well as differences within the Hindu wedding ceremonies
between South India and North India. The most important aspect of weddings in India is that it involves the whole family. It is not just two people
becoming one, it is two families becoming one. Knowing this, fully expect to have both families involved in every step of planning your big day!
Parents shop for their daughters' bridal gifts and goods from the time they are born and devote a massive amount of their savings for this anticipated
wedding day (Vora, 2012). Just like in America, the first step is an engagement ceremony or in the Hindu tradition, the Mangni (Gullapalli & Sagi,
n.d., P.1). In this step the exciting news is shared and the engagement is made official with the meeting of both sides of the family (Gullapalli & Sagi,

Marriage And Hinduism

  • 1. Marriage And Hinduism Chapter 9: Marriage and Hinduism For Hindus, the marriage between two humans is a divine connection that is not restricted to a single lifetime. They believe that marriage extends through several births and deaths, during which the married couple assists each other to attain liberation from Maya. The old saying "marriages are made in heaven" is considered as a basic truth in Hinduism. Believers claim that the souls of a married couple united because their destinies are entwined and they must go through several lives here on earth if they want to attain salvation. In Hinduism, marriage is a connection between two souls. Also, they think that the gender of a person is not fixed. For example, the male might become the female in his next life. It is also possible for the couple to become separated temporarily for one or two lifetimes. However, since their souls are linked, they will be reunited. Hindus believe that marriage is a sacred bond. They consider it as an obligation and a sacrament. An individual is expected to get married unless he renounces this right and becomes a hermit. Marriage is an important part in the life of a Hindu, so they think of it as an essential goal. A female Hindu ends her life as a maiden by getting married. She is required to leave her ... In general, alcoholic beverages and meat products are not served during this occasion. At the conclusion of the wedding ritual, the groom ties a holy thread (called the "mangalsutram") or a necklace around the neck of his bride. He takes her hand and they walk seven steps while saying promises of righteousness, friendship and loyalty. After that, the couple will entertain the guests and play some games to lighten the mood. • 2. Hindu Weddings Essay Marriage is the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family. (Webster's Dictionary.) When a couple gets married they make a vow in front of their loved ones and their God to be together for the rest of their lives and abide by each other. In the Hindu religion, which is the third largest religion in the world, weddings are very sacred, therefore a wedding ceremony takes a lot of time and effort and it is composed of different rituals and ceremonies. The Hindu marriage, "Lagna Vivah" is the connection of two human beings in a nuptial ceremony that takes place according to their religion. It's the connection of not only the man and woman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore you can never marry someone outside your caste even if you are truly in love with someone outside your caste your marriage will never be favored. If a couple still goes ahead and proceeds with marrying even though they are from two different castes, there family will basically disown them and so they will have to deal with a lot of public pressure from their family as well as outsiders. Today the idea of arranged marriages is overlooked as a forced marriage from other society's point of views. Hindus arrange their children to meet partners they think are well suitable for them but this does not mean the son or daughter has to automatically marry this person they have been introduced to. They have a choice whether to go along with it or not. They are not forced at any point to marry this person. Years ago parents arranged their children marriages while their children were very young and even babies. They understood that if the kids grew up together over the years they will learn everything there was to know about each other and so everything will basically work out to their advantage. Even though the girl was practically married at a very young age she did not have to live with her husband until she was matured, until then she will just visit him and his family. The wedding will occur before puberty, so the girl will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ap Human Geo Nepal Essay In the video "Into Nepal – A Journey through the Kathmandu Valley," there were many concepts that were easily recognizable due to the information that was given during the first semester of the AP Human Geography course. The Hindu people who are pictured in the video segment, Budanilkantha: AHindu Wedding, are practicing a custom of many Hindu people. A custom is the frequent repetition of an act, to the extent that it becomes a characteristic of the group of people performing the act. Although not all Hindus participate in arranged marriages, the acts that occur during the marriage are very similar. Before the wedding takes place, the bride receives a jewel that marks the central part in her hair which is a signal of her marriage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hinduism is a major religious and cultural tradition of the Indian subcontinent, comprising a diverse family of devotional and ascetic cults and philosophical schools, all sharing a belief in reincarnation and involving the worship of a large pantheon of deities. In the Pashupatinath valley region, there is a cremation temple which is a part of the landscape of the dead in Nepal. A landscape of the dead is a place where burial rituals are carried out, which may vary by religion. In Pashupatinath, when a woman's husband or family dies, she wears white. The attendees of the funeral offer the soul of the deceased body incense, food, and water so that it doesn't feel troubled on its journey towards a new form. The deceased's mouth is then lit on fire by the eldest brother, which is said to purify his/her soul. In the landscape, there are also many river cleaners who pan for gold fillings that come from the teeth of the deceased. You can find many saddus also in the Pashupatinath valley. They are people who have come to the last stage in their lives and are spending the rest of their lives without any material possessions and living in prayer. They spend their days meditating and doing yoga which is said to help their concentration and purification. Many of the saddus have probably made a pilgrimage to the valley. • 6. Essay On Rites Of Passage Rites of Passage are "rituals that mark a person passage from one identity to the next" (Robins, Cummings and McGarry 2016, 61). Marriage is the 15th and most important rite of passage in a Hindu's life (Holme and Bowker 1994, 72). This rite of passage is known as "vivaha" and the rituals conducted during the ceremony vary from each region in India. "Satpadi" translates to "Seven Steps" and is the final ritual of the "vivaha". This occurs during the marriage ceremony of one 's life where the bride and groom tie a piece of their clothing together and walk around the sacred fire seven times, where each round is symbolic as it holds a lifetime vow (Holme and Bowker 1994, 82). The final stage is known when the passage is accomplished, and the individual has transitioned into a new identity (Turner 1979). Victor Turner, constructed on Van Gennep 's model of the three stages of rites of passage and focussed on liminality. For India's ancient thinkers, life is seen as the very stuff of the Divine, an emanation of the Source and part of a cosmic continuum. The nature of this continuum varies in Hindu thought. Some hold that the individual evolves up through life forms, taking more and more advanced incarnations which culminate in human life. Others believe that according to one's karma and samskaras, the process can even be reversed, that is, one can achieve a "lower" birth. Even those Indians who do not believe in reincarnation of an individual still hold that all that exists abides in the Divine. They further hold that each life form–even water and trees–possesses consciousness and energy. Whether the belief is that the life force of animals can evolve into human status, or that the opposite can also take place, or simply that all things enjoy their own consciousness, the result is the same–a reverence for life. Rituals have a prominent role in today's society as they enable people of all religions to communicate and form a stronger connection with their God or Gods (Rituals, Rites and Festivals, n.d.). Over the years rituals have evolved because society's values have changed and modern culture has had an influence on them. The sacred ritual of marriage in Catholic Christianity and Hinduism, while superficially different, are essentially the same. This is particularly evident when analysing similarities and differences in each faith's perception of the purpose of marriage, the structure of the two wedding ceremonies, the symbols involved in the two ceremonies, and the role of family in the Catholic and Hindu wedding ceremony. An area of similarity within Catholic weddings and Hindu weddings is the purpose of marriage. Both Catholicism and Hinduism represent the purpose of marriage through their sacred texts and traditional ideas. In Catholicism the sacrament of Marriage is represented as a sacred bond between a man and a woman that pledges them to be faithful lifelong spouses, loving and caring for each other and lovingly raising and guiding the children they bring into the world (Stoutzenberger, 2000). The emphasis that is placed on having children is seen in the Bible when God says to Adam and Eve, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" (Genesis 1:28). Similarly the ... The Indian History And The Status Of Women The Indian History and the Status of Women : Women's security is closely connected to global security still they suffer simply because they differ in gender. However, in the interrelated world everyone is influenced either positively or negatively by the decisions of individuals or states (UNIFEM 2003). To understand the status of the Indian women it is important to understand the history gender discrimination in the country. The women were raped, abducted and their bodies were used as a medium of men's evil expression as Indian Hindus and the Pakistani Muslims battled for power to defend their countries. This tactic of humiliating the opponent by using women's bodies as a tool of power dominance is still being practiced in the Indian society and is visible in the cases of Devi and Sori (Dobhal 2011: 598). Mother India, commonly termed as Bharat Mata in Sanskrit is the national personification of India as a mother goddess which is widely depicted as a woman clad in a saffron sari holding the national flag. The reason is the entire world is intertwined and essentially one giant imagined community thanks in large part to advanced technology and the phenomena of globalization. New York City is the media capital of the world and Time square is arguably one of the most popular media attractions to see. The worlds address should be Manhattan, NY 10036 because as a global community all roads go through New York City and has been for many years now. Globalization has been seen in the world through examples of economics, culture, technology and many other forms. People, whether they know it or not, will be connected to a person they don't know in some sort of way. Anderson in his book on "Imagined Communities" says "It [Community] is imagined because if the members of the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow–members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion"(Anderson. 6). This statement can be exemplified with a wide multitude of things from as Anderson uses, the story of a married couple, the husband's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Indian Wedding Traditions : Ancient India Ancient Indian Wedding Traditions Can you imagine a society where brides are sold to grooms and aren't expected to date before they marry? In ancient India, this was proposed as the norm for marriages. Marriages were more commonly seen as a financial deal rather than the joining of two individuals who are in love. We may laugh and say, "How crazy were they back then?" but some of these ancient traditions still hold some value in India's society today. Through ostentatious detail, ancient Indian weddings took a lot of time, money, and effort to produce. Ancient Indian parents often married their daughters off at a young age. The average age of marriage in ancient India was sixteen for boys and even younger for girls (Uberoi 327). In other societies, it is permitted for women to stay single. In ancient India, this was prohibited. It was expected that girls be "married off before they became nubile" (Auboyer 177). Most parents wanted to marry off their daughters as early as they could for several reasons. If a woman lost her virginity, she was automatically unmarriageable, which spiked numbers of prostitutes and lesbians. To have a lesbian or prostitute daughter would be shameful to the whole family. By marrying off their daughters at a young age, the chance of their becoming these two things was almost impossible. Another reason for parents to marry off their daughters at such a young age was because, unlike boys, girls were completely financially reliable on their fathers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Muslim and Hindu Wedding Ceremony INTRODUCTION: The Islamic and Hindu religions have an array of similarities and differences regarding their customs and laws in relation to the 'wedding ceremony'. Within Islam, the wedding ceremony is believed to be both a religious and social obligation to get married. As a result, there is a great weight placed on religious, social and cultural dimensions of the ceremony which tends to be simple in nature, paralleling Islamic beliefs. Hindus also place a lot of importance on marriage ceremonies which signify customs, rituals and elaborate celebrations. However, a key difference lies in the fact that Islamic marriages are seen as contractual agreements, whereas Hindu marriages are perceived to be sacrilegious. This essay compares ... Often the ceremony can be conducted in Sanskrit which gets its roots from Hinduism and embraces a rich tradition of poetry as well as practical and philosophical texts. The Venue An Islamic wedding ceremony can take place in many places apart from a Mosque, even though a Mosque is highly preferred. Before the ceremony, the bride and groom should find out whether it's possible to video and take photos of the event. Flowers and ornaments are not allowed in the Mosque even though the bride and groom are decorated with flowers for the service. If the ceremony takes place in a venue which isn't a Mosque, the bride and groom have more freedom to decorate, providing they seek advice from the local 'Imam', of what is appropriate. The Hindu marriage usually takes in the bride's hometown or city. The venue is generally a town or community hall, or a hotel, depending on the budget of the bride's family. There are often blessings in the temple before or after the service. Wedding Attire Customarily, the Arab Muslim bride wears a simple white dress and veil, very similar to the Christian faith. An Asian Muslim bride however, is much more colourful and wears glittering clothes, plenty of jewellery and flower garlands around her. The hands and feet of the bride are often decorated with henna ('Mehndi'). The

  • 33. Different Types And Patterns Of The World It is early in the morning, and women in Hindu families all over the world are preparing to begin their day. As the women in these families, they have many duties and rituals that they perform daily for them and their families. After washing up, they clean the house and make sure that everything is properly decorated. Next, they prepare the place that they are going to perform a ritual where they make something called a Kolam. Kolams are made in many different places, there are different types and patterns, and there are many reasons that Kolams are said to be made. First, I want to look at what they actually are: A kolam is a drawing that is typically done at the entrance of a house and is created from riceflour. Kolams are not only made for the entrance of a house however. Kolams are also made for things other than every day activities such as weddings and in front of temples, which are considered sacred kolams that are not to be touched. Kolams are drawn for festivals and many other special events. Although there are several traditional patterns, kolams do not always have a pattern and the creativity of the drawing is left up to whomever is drawing it. Kolam is practiced only by women and is taught to the younger girls in the family by the mothers. They are very intricate drawings and there are certain ways in which the women go about drawing them. The place that the women prepare for the kolam is cleaned and then dampened with water in hopes that the dried flour ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The word samskar is evolved from the root 'samskri' which means to purify or form thoroughly. Samskriti В– meaning "civilization" and Sanskrit are derived from the root 'samskri'. Samskrit was considered the most refined and grammatically perfect language compared to other regional languages in ancient times. Symbolism has a significant role in the performance of samskaras, as it does in the entirety of the Hindu religion. Both materialistic and action based symbols are abundantly obvious in each samskara, and too numerous to mention. Examples include the use of Audumbar branches, or fig branches, which stand for prosperity. The vatu (student) at upanayana and the bride at a wedding instructed to stand on a rock signifying stability and firmness. Touching of the heart in upanayana between teacher and student and in marriage between bride and groom, indicates residence of God and virtues of love and harmony. Mass of rice indicates abundance and prosperity. Eating together means fusion of hearts, grasping the hand (panigrahana) indicates assumption of responsibilities. • 36. Hinduism And The Indian Culture After reading the article, I think rituals have some basic structures of meaning, and there are number of ways to show that rituals are meaningful. In the following thesis I choose Hinduism as an example to show how rituals are meaningful, how it relates to the living context of the Indian people, how the Indians enact the Hindu rituals, and so on. India is a country full of mysteries and differences. It has a long history, a profound yet unique culture, with diversified nationalities, races, religions, languages and a huge population. The pursuit of secularism and inveteracy of sectarianism have brought huge influence to the Indian society. As the mainstream culture in India, Hinduism plays an important role in the Indian society and has dominated almost 2000 years of its history. Although in the following years since, the Indian culture gradually becomes a combination of different races, religions and languages, Hinduism still remains to be the key to dig into the development of the culture and society of India. First, the Hindu's worship of the imperishability of gods is the spiritual power for the Indians' faith and persistence in overcoming difficulties and obstacles in the long history of development. There are numerous gods in Hinduism, in which the most important ones including the Creator Brahma, the Preserver Vishnu and the Destroyer Siva. • 37. The Scriptures Of Hindu Culture And Philosophy The Bhagavad–Gita or simply Gita, conceivably the most recognized of all nonpareil scriptures of Hindu culture and philosophy, is universally perceived as one of the world's ethical literatures. The Sanskrit title, Bhagavad–Gita, is commonly construed as "Song of the Lord." The Gita is incorporated into the sixth book of the longest Hindu classic, Mahabharata, although it is known to be a subsequent accretion to the epic, which stands on its own distinction. The ideology encapsulated in the Bhagavad Gita, doing action with detachment from the consequences is relevant and vital to our understanding of way of life even in the contemporary western world. The teachings of the Gita assist people to manage their states of mental agitation, desires and emotions which will lead them to take right decisions followed by right actions. This certainly explains its immense recognition both in the East and the West. Distinguished philosophers, intellectuals, and scientists have conceded that the Bhagavad–Gita presents profound wisdom. Gandhi once proclaimed: When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad–Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day. The Gita is an insightful response to an abiding human quandary of discerning right from wrong. Human ... • 38. Have You Ever Wondered If You Have Lived More Than Once? Have you ever wondered if you have lived more than once? Or what happens after death? Many believe that you continue to live after death, but how is it possible and why so? Today I will inform you about the concept of reincarnation. For some of us, like myself, have had dreams or images of places or things that we have never seen, in person with our own eyes, in our current lifetime. Then we see these images in a picture online and feel like we have been there or have some sort of connection with them. Many say that this is due to our past lives. As in we have lived before in a different time and somehow, we can remember some things from it. People began to call this the belief of reincarnation. I will first explain what reincarnation is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, Hindus take reincarnation very seriously and that is what influences their everyday actions. After reading the article, "Reincarnation as a Concept", issued in the Journal for Spiritual and Consciousness Studies in 2014, the author, Michael O'Dell, explains a common Hindu belief is that "the soul which has manifested as you, has previously incarnated as an animal and may well do so again in the future." This is one of the reasons why devout Hindus strive not to harm any bug or animal, since that creature may be a reincarnation of a deceased relative or friend. They also see reincarnation as a trapped cycle of one 's own bad karma. Karma is a belief that every good and bad returns to the individual as a reward or a punishment. They belief that the individual has an eternal soul that goes through reincarnation as many times as it takes until it reaches liberation. Only way to reach this is by doing good and paying all your dues. Any wrong or bad done in that lifetime will lead to reincarnation. It is pretty much as getting a second chance. They strive to reach liberation because they see it as a free ticket out of the trapped cycle. Buddhism believes that reincarnation, referred to as rebirth, is processed by desires which keeps the cycle going. A cycle that no one can escape and that never ends and may be infinite until liberation occurs. They defined ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, the bride and groom must both be in the same caste, if not the marriage would be considered taboo. Another requirement would be a similar economic and religious background. Because Andaloor is in South India, the prospective bride might also be a blood relative due to 'village endogamy'. All of these requirements however, have become slightly (emphasis on the slightly) less important in contemporary India, although adherence to the 'norm' is still a dominant factor in marriage in India. • 40. Meaning of Ahimsa Essay Meaning of Ahimsa Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term that translates roughly into non–injury to living beings or dynamic harmlessness. Ahimsa tends to evoke images of monks wearing cloths over their faces to avoid breathing microscopic beings and sweeping the insects off the path in front of them as they walk so they won't accidentally crush one under their feet. One cannot easily live in today's world without causing some harm to other beings – but that does not mean we shouldn't try to keep it to a minimum. Planning a traditional Hindu wedding just like Christian weddings can differ between couples as well as differences within the Hindu wedding ceremonies between South India and North India. The most important aspect of weddings in India is that it involves the whole family. It is not just two people becoming one, it is two families becoming one. Knowing this, fully expect to have both families involved in every step of planning your big day! Parents shop for their daughters' bridal gifts and goods from the time they are born and devote a massive amount of their savings for this anticipated wedding day (Vora, 2012). Just like in America, the first step is an engagement ceremony or in the Hindu tradition, the Mangni (Gullapalli & Sagi, n.d., P.1). In this step the exciting news is shared and the engagement is made official with the meeting of both sides of the family (Gullapalli & Sagi, n.d. P.1). Among the festivities, it is a custom to pick the Muhurat, or date and time of the wedding during this event (Gullapalli & Sagi, n.d., Pp.1–2). Due to the fact that you are a Leo and your fiance is a Capricorn, your zodiac signs, help determine the appropriate Muhurat. After months of planning, decision–making and bonding, your grand event has finally arrived. The Mehendi ceremony starts off the pre–wedding festivities, where the bride will be ...
