Language Bridges and Barriers Language can be a barrier or a bridge depending on how one facilitates its use. Being monolingual hinders
communication to others who speak a different language while being bilingual can create a bridge between nations, ethnicities, and cultures.
Unfortunately, this "bridge" is being threatened by legalization that impedes minorities, the first amendment, diversity, and the quality of education
received in the U.S. Therefore, my stance is that the U.S. should not have an official language and that the state of Arkansas does not need language

My culture and way of life have never been encroached upon because of what language I spoke.
Throughout history, the unfortunate consequences that have arisen when the U.S. has attempted to enforce language policies will cause one to
reconsider their opinions on controlling minority languages. For instance, during the time of America's Founding Fathers language was diverse and
society exulted themselves on knowing more than one language (Crawford, 1989). Many members of society were bilingual and even trilingual
regardless of their social station. In fact, being monolingual was considered abnormal (Crawford, 1989). Government documents were accommodating
of other languages and were provided in popular languages of the time, such as French, German, and of course, English (Crawford, 1989). A suggestion
to Continental Congress by John Adams to create an "American academy for refining, improving, and ascertaining the English language," (Adams,
1780) was rejected. The Founding Fathers never promoted or guarded English in the Constitution and I believe they thought that the government had no
right to tell the population how to speak (Crawford, 1989).
It was customary at this time for there to be non–English and bilingual schools but objections about immigrants around the 1900s changed the way

Germany 's Tourism As An American Citizen
Many Americans have common misconceptions about Germany and its people even before visiting the country or getting to know a German
national. Germans are often perceived to be cold or mean and that they dislike tourists. Many also believe that the language sounds harsh or is
unromantic and all Germans consume is sauerkraut, sausage, and beer. These views could be largely due to the way Hollywood paints Germans out
to be and American views on holidays such as Oktoberfest. As a German as well as an American citizen, I have heard many of these stereotypes and
can confidently refute these claims and say that Germany and its people are actually very friendly and have a rich and diverse culture.
Germany's tourism is on the rise as described in a report in a marketline industry profile. It describes that the travel and tourism industry grew in
2015 by 3.3% and is "projected to maintain a similar growth rate..."(Travel and Tourism in Germany 8). In fact, every time I visit I meet more and
more people who are touring Germany. A study done in 2013 by Andrew Hare and collegues was aimed to see how Americans perceived Germans and
Germany. It found that almost 60% of Americans had a positive impression and thought it was modern, forward thinking, and economically powerful

Doctors and nurses may also use medical terminology when discussing something in front of a patient in order to prevent undue anxiety. Medical
"jargon" is not at all meant to speak in pig latin in front of a patient. It is so that there is no mistake when doctors are conveying information about a
patient to each other. For example, to a lay person, "fever" may mean that the person feels hot, or that the temperature is above 100 Fahrenheit. But no
one really knows and can cause a lot of confusion. With medical terms, things are very clear, so that even a surgeon in France can read a scientific

The life of a military brat is a fascinating one, and life actually serving in the military has been just as interesting. Not everyone has the opportunity to
travel abroad and most of us that grew–up under these conditions are ignorant of this fact. I have had the privilege of traveling to many different

The German culture is a very sophisticated group of people in the upper Europe. German's are widely recognized for there one of the kind environment

The language of the German culture is very sophisticated with a wide vocabulary. Germany has a wide variety of languages spoken in their country
like Turkish, Kurdish, Danish, Sorbian, North Frisian, and West Frisian (Commisceo, 2017). According to Commisceo Global Consultancy, the variety
of languages only used by a little under five percent of Germany as ninety–five percent of the culture speaks its main language (Commisceo, 2017).
Within the main language, the characters used to write the language are almost completely the same as English with the exception of a few. The few
exceptions of the language are the umlauts and eszett that both have different meanings within the language. The eszett is the symbol for "double S"

A speech act is defined by George Yule as "an action such as 'promising' performed by a speaker with an utterance, either as a direct speech act or an

Trying to compare the United States to Switzerland is quite difficult, especially when there are many differences between the states of America. So
the easiest is to compare the general aspects across the board, and for the smaller differences I can only compare it with Texas, since I have lived
there my whole life. The first major difference is the food, of course the food is different all across Europe compared to the United States, just because
we have different types of food. In America we like to imitate other countries food, trying to bring different cuisines to everyone 's diet. For example;
Italian, Greek, Chinese, Asian, and many other different cuisines. Swiss food you rarely see in America, like the fondue, that is something America
has put a twist on, trying to imitate that certain dish. Roclette has just now been introduced to America, and it's one of the bigger hits now, but it is
nice to know we have had it in Switzerland from where it is originally from. Another difference in food, is that nothing in Switzerland is processed,
no preservatives, no high fructose corn syrup, and no dyes. Another thing that is different with the foods, is having freshly produced chocolate that is
out of this world. It is a disappointment to go back to America and crave chocolate to only have the options of either getting Hershey 's, which will
not taste as good or as smooth, or find European chocolate for more than $5. But not all of American food is bad, we are known for

One of the most common things that America is known for is having a combination of so many cultures and languages. Although spanish is the
second language people think of being spoken in the United States, languages such as german, chinese, japanese, french, and russian are commonly
spoken as well. It is important that all US high school and college students are required to learn at least two years of a foreign language so that
teens can be more open to travel, can compete for jobs, and are able to expand their knowledge about the world. People in the US tend to get

With the growth of English and globalization, small communities are becoming inundated with English media. This media results in people hearing
more English than other languages. There are more English translations than any other languages. Increasingly people are writing in English in order
to appeal to a world market and in doing so producing writing which is more western and does not encapsulate the different experiences of story telling
which differ so considerably from culture to culture. World literature, because of the increased use of English as a global language becomes English
literature
In sum the global nature of English is linked with a loss of individuality. The unique nature of language, culture, tradition and literature can become
lost in response to the wave of western English culture and language. Personally I have no idea where this new movement may leave us. It is a
great shame that individuality may be lost, as is alluded to in this article, in the strive for a growth and a more convenient world. Nonetheless I do
see advantages gathered from the use of English as a dominant medium. I do believe that there is room in all this for a compromise between local
culture and language and that the global use of English which does not necessarily mean the loss of one and gain of the other. As an English teacher
and a native English speaker it is important to bear in mind these aspects of the
