For the majority of our nation's history, treatment for those deemed mentally ill was poor at best. Now seen as rather dark and cruel, those suffering
from a mental illness were cast away from society. Those admitted were locked away within the confines of an insane asylum, where they were

My Experience At The Florida State Mental Hospital
My experience at the Florida State Mental Hospital as a psychology major has most definitely been an unforgettable one. The mere eight visits I
was able to make has rewarded me with so much knowledge about what it takes to work alongside the mentally ill, mental health workers, and
hospital staff altogether. Even though I have been constantly preparing my brain for my future career as a clinical psychologist by reading and
researching in my classes as well as during my free time, I don't believe any of these readings could have directly shown me the reality of it all.
During the first week, Dr.Resch kindly introduced herself and began showing us the facility by pulling out the historical medical records of the hospital.
She hauled out these massive and completely outdates books and began reading through the kinds of patients administered into the hospital in the
1900s. We read through multiple patients' diagnoses, comparing the today's diagnostic terminology to the terminology of the early 1900s. We
unquestionably learned a lot about the history and the manner in which the hospital handled its staff and patients more than a century ago during this
visit. In the next couple of weeks, we met many patients, whom which we talked with about their experiences prior and during hospitalization at FSH.

According to the director of national health, "the States have cut $5 billion in mental health services from 2009 to 2012. While also distinguishing at
least 4,500 public psychiatric hospital beds." Decreasing funds for mental health has resulted in an overcrowded population of homeless patients who
either spend their time on the streets, in prisons, or in coffins. Overtime, mentally ill patients have nowhere to go, the jail systems are failing to provide
proper treatment, and the government has already reduced mental health fundings as it is. It is time to take a stand, and say yes to increasing funds
towards the mentally ill and health facilities. Mentally ill patients are overcrowding the streets because no shelter seems to welcome them. Their mental
