The Case of the Chicken Pot Pie
In reviewing the online Blackboard document and evidence regarding the case of Susan v. Cansco,
we can see that the plaintiff, Susan (last name is unknown) has stated negligence against the
defendant; Cansco, who is the distributor of Susan's purchased dented canned chicken at the
Superfast grocery store.
Susan is asserting the claim that Cansco had negligence on their product of the canned chicken
because the can was dented, and Susan and her guest (full name is unknown) became ill after Susan
had prepared a chicken pot pie with the canned goods ingredients. After they had consumed the
prepared chicken pot pie, both Susan and her guest experienced a food poisoning illness. We
understand from the circumstances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Derby Foods, Inc., the plaintiff by the name of "Dean," (no first name given), had consumed some
of the beef in the can of the "Derby Corned Beef," which was purchased at a grocery store. The
Derby Foods company was the distributor of the canned corned beef, to which the beef was
imported from South America. Unfortunately, Dean became ill after consuming the canned beef, and
expired the next day. The case stated "in such cases the place of the wrong, the 'locus delicit,' is
taken by courts in this country to be the state where the last event necessary to make the actor liable
occurs (Google Scholar, 1940, para. 5)." In this case, the court sided with the defendant because
there was no proof of evidence for the liability on their part. With comparison to Susan and Cansco,
we have no knowledge to where the chicken product was produced in the canned

Benecol: Raisio's Global Nutriceutical Raisio, a Finnish grain and chemical company, is the proud
owner of a product that has been deemed one of the ten most important nutritional innovations in
the world ("Benecol®," 2010). This product is a unique compound composed of plant stanol esters
and has been scientifically proven to help lower cholesterol levels in humans. With the prevalence
of high cholesterol in the world population and the incidence of mortality associated with a high
cholesterol level, it is no wonder that Raisio had a deep desire to share ... Show more content on

This strategy clearly defined the roles that each partner would perform and be financially
responsible for. Raisio would continue to maintain control of the stanol ester including the
production of it and the supply of the raw material or plant sterol. Their input of capital was geared
toward keeping the supply constant and Raisio was quick to go into joint ventures with DRT
(France), Detsa S.A. (Chile), and Westvaco Corporation (U.S.). Along with building sterol
production plants in these countries, Raisio also built another one in Finland (Moffett &
Howard, 1999). Raisio would buy the stanols that were produced at the various plants and then turn
them into stanol ester using a process that they had patented. McNeil would then purchase stanol
ester exclusively from Raisio, make the products containing the ester, and send these products to
market and promote them. McNeil had budgeted over US$80 million for the promotional
commitment (Moffett & Howard, 1999).
Two other items that were covered in the agreement between Raisio and Johnson & Johnson
pertained to payments that would be made to Raisio. Raisio would receive royalties on the sales of
all products containing Benecol and they would also receive milestone payments. The milestone
payments were an incentive for Raisio and an insurance policy for McNeil. If McNeil were to
introduce Benecol products into major markets, they needed to make sure that there

The inventor and pioneer in the field of organic chemistry later then set up a laboratory in Montclair,
New Jersey where he continued his research and creating patents. In total Mr. Ellis has 753 patents,
one of the highest amounts of patents for any individual. "He invented important methods of
cracking crude oil as well as methods for synthesizing isopropyl alcohol and acetone. He invented
lacquers for automobile paints and developed processes for applying plastics... He was also an early
proponent of hydroponic plant growth" (Bowman). Overall Carleton Ellis is not too well known of
an inventor but has more than seven hundred patents. He is attributed to helping out in both the
World Wars because of his inventions in the field of organic chemistry. Mr. Ellis has so many
patents that are still being used in today's society. When people initially think about paint, one of the
first things to pop into their heads is "irremovable" or "stuck there forever". Carleton Ellis, of

What Is Kenna's Preference?
Kenna's album was given outside research firm to run test to see if his music was worth or not. After
all, the result was extremely low that made the company come to believe that his music was not
going to be popular.
2. Sensation transference is the claim that before people buy something from a store, they transfer
their impression about the packaging of the product to the product itself. In the example of the
Coke/Pepsi test, the Coke tried to work on a new flavor and test how people reacted with it. They
launched a marketing campaign and asked people how they like new taste. The result was very well.
The Coke put new recipe to the market. Unfortunately, the high testing score showed that people did
not like the New Coke. In the example of the margarine/butter ... Show more content on

Researchers tested people's preference for different brands of jam, and the results from non–food
experts initially matched the results from food experts. Then they changed the test, and the results
from non–food experts changed, but not the results from food experts. What was the change? Why
did it change the results from non–food experts? Why did the results from food experts not change?
At first, college students just required to rank the jam according to the same criteria. Then they were
asked to explain why they preferred the certain jam. The first result was very accurate. But then the
researcher changed the way to ask, people have to explain the reasons why they preferred a certain
jam, most people could not articulate their preference. Therefore, they were lost the ability to
qualify the jam.
5. How does Gladwell apply the lessons from the examples in questions 2, 3, and 4 to explain what
happened to Kenna?
Kenna music was different and new. The people think something new and not well–known are not
good. They do not matched experiences in a certain field. This is the reason to explain what
happened to Kenna; radio station would not played his music without proof that people like

Rural Trash and Recycling Throughout History Essay
Recycling and Trash in Rural Areas
Recycling and trash is not a problem that has newly been raised in society. Trash, recycling and its
removal has been in history for centuries. As long as humans in society consume, there will be the
remainder of something that humans see as trash. Society holds a different perspective on trash and
recycling that varies from society, culture, tradition and way of life. A matter of perspective of some
incidents review that one man's trash is another man's treasure and if one wastes not, they want not.
Rural trash pickup is limited in the state of Iowa for numerous reasons that will be discussed within
this project, as well as how rural individuals deal with no trash pickup. The heated argument of

Burning waste in a burn barrel is legal in some circumstances, but open dumping and burning
accumulated piles is not. It is never permissible to place a burn pile or trash barrel within the county
right of way. Recycling is also more difficult because pick up is not available in all rural areas,"
Prior to purchase of the property of 8 acres, the event of trash was placed in a perspective that it was
possible for a trash route. However, the county line of Clinton County is indeed where the trash
pick–up ends. That line is less than ¼ mile away from our residence. The city of address is Lowden,
Iowa. Their landfill is full and has taken the option to send their waste to another landfill. There is
no rural service for Cedar County in our section of the county. The actions of waste management are
solely the responsibility of the property owner and there is a limited amount of space to store trash.
In the event of problem solving the trash, it has been a solution to store that which could not be
burned into trash bins each sorted to the type. Those items consist of tin cans, glass, batteries, light
bulbs, milk jugs, and margarine bowls. It is understandable that milk jugs and margarine bowls
would indeed burn, but the hardened plastic once it is melted still is a solid waste that must be dealt
with in the end in the ashes. Not only, but the toxics that are released into the air when those items
burn is and has been questioned.

The Pros And Cons Of GMO Products
1. a/b. Currently, in GMO production, the focus crops are soybeans, rapeseed/canola, and cotton,
along with many others that still have been worked on, but not quite ready for cultivation. Soybeans
have been modified to possess a gene that causes the plants to become herbicide resistant. In order
for the plant to become herbicide resistant, either an existing gene has been switched off, or a new
gene has been added to the plant. Currently, Argentina and the United States are the only countries
without major restrictions regarding GM soybeans, and they can be treated and cultivated just like
non–modified soybeans. GM soybeans are primarily used as animal feed due to its high protein

Genetically modifying crops has been a controversial issue over the past several years. People argue
for and against GMOs in an almost constant battle. Those for GMOs argue that genetically
modifying crops is better for people and the crops, such as making them better resistant to weeds,
insects, and disease, naturally contain herbicides and pesticides, taste better and have a higher
nutritional value, and have a longer shelf life in stores. Those against GMOs argue that they are a
risk to human health, a risk to the environment, a risk to farmers in developing countries, and a risk
to organic farmers. 2. a/c. Sites for and against GMOs: For: o

more than half of the calories Americans consume come from ultra–processed foods

Healthy yogurt brands do exist, but the flavored variety are typically best avoided. Not only do
many companies use artificial colors to make these yogurts looking fruitier, but they are also loaded
with sugar and carbohydrates. Since these yogurts also tend to be very low in protein there is
nothing to balance out the high concentrations of sugar and make you feel full. Rather choose plain

Contrary to Coca–Cola executives' beliefs, the "Pepsi Challenge" didn't necessarily prove that
people preferred Pepsi to Coke; it just suggested that, when blindfolded, people preferred a small
amount of Pepsi to the same amount of Coke. Louis Cheskin's success as an advertiser is notable
because it proves that people don't always know what they want; they have to be told. In the case of
margarine, for instance, people weren't consciously aware that they would respond to margarine
wrapped in attractive gold foil–it wasn't until Cheskin released margarine of this kind that people
"discovered" their attraction to such a product. It's also important to notice that Cheskin didn't
change the taste of margarine; rather, he only altered the product's presentation. Good packaging can
be very important because it catches customers' eyes and convinces them that the product itself is
good, too. Cheskin's research into marketing and packaging has been very influential, inspiring
hundreds of companies to revamp their products. Once a new package or advertisement is proven to
be successful, many other companies will try to imitate that package or ad–hence the sudden
popularity of semi–realistic food

Detection of Biological Molecules
Detection of Biological Molecules
Introduction: Without carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen and phosphorus, life wouldn't
exist. These are the most abundant elements in living organisms.
These elements are held together by covalent bonds, ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, and disulfide
bonds. Covalent bonds are especially strong, thus, are present in monomers, the building blocks of
life. These monomers combine to make polymers, which is a long chain of monomers strung
together. Biological molecules can be distinguished by their functional groups. For example, an
amino group is present in amino acids, and a carboxyl group can always be found in fatty acids.
The groups can be separated into two more categories, the polar, ... Show more content on

Raisio Group and the Benecol Launch Case Analysis Essay
Raisio Group and the Benecol Launch Case Analysis
Park University
Benecol was launched in 1955 by the company Raisio in Finland ("Benecol," 2010). Benecol has
become a successful additive to multiple product lines due to its unique ingredient of plant stanol
ester. The ingredient has been proven to reduce cholesterol levels and can easily be added to any
food (Grant, 2010). Raisio, up until 1997, produced much of the plant stanol it needed and was self–
sufficient in its exploitation of stanol ester technology (Grant, 2010). Raisio then made the decision
to become part of Johnson & Johnson in order to gain global marketing, manufacturing, and
distribution capabilities. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their success was based on its innovation to create technology to extract and produce the main
ingredient in Benecol. By using a differentiation advantage which singled them out in a very
specific market (foods that lower cholesterol) they were able to put plans in place to guarantee the
success of the product. By merging with J&J, they create a large market for their product with
multiple distribution capabilities. Because differentiation is only affected when consumers are made
aware, Benecol was marketed widely to lower cholesterol and most people know it now as a "health
food" (Grant, 2010). The process of innovation and competition is also very important in the
position that Benecol is in its life cycle. The product began with short production runs, with limited
specialized distribution channels in 1996. It then emerged into the growth stage of its life cycle
when it partnered with J& J to create multiple product lines, mass production, and competition for
distribution. Benecol seems to be in its Maturity stage at the present time, allowing for long
production runs, and distributors carrying fewer lines, due to economy and less demand for high end
food products (Grant, 2010). Because there are only a handful of companies that can create products
with plant stanol ester, Benecol is a leader in its innovation for the technology. Benecol is also very
well diversified, and it continues to create products that

Why Should Be A Vegan
Why to Become a Vegan
A vegan is a person who chooses not to consume any animal byproducts, including: flesh foods,
dairy, eggs, and any other products made from or tested on animals. Vegetarianism, however, which
can commonly be viewed as the same thing, is far from it. Vegetarians chose only to not consume
meat, but they continue to eat other animal byproducts. Most vegans believe that "Being a vegan is
definitely more of a lifestyle choice and a philosophy that a diet" (Medical News Today). Although
many people are starting to eat vegan for a week as a diet, they are not being true to the vegan
philosophy; respecting the earth and all living things, promoting non–violence, and sticking to it.
Veganism is a lifestyle that does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The average protein intake for a vegan ranges from 52–63 grams per day," the Vegetarian Resource
Group States. As stated by the Wildflour Vegan Bakery Cafe, "The average American eats twice as
much protein as necessary for a healthy diet and much of that is from red meat. Getting protein from
beans and grains is much healthier and reduces the risk for osteoporosis". Basic needed vitamins
like Vitamins B and D lack in a vegan meal plan. Most vegans take a B–12 supplement, because the
vitamin is usually only present in animal products. Vitamin D is added to cow's milk and some non
dairy milks, but it also comes from the sun. Vegans can get a healthy dose of this vitamin if they
make sure to read labels or take a supplement. Although it may be hard to get some of the basic
vitamins needed, most all of the food that is being replaced, is getting substituted for a healthier
option. Some people may immediately think margarine is worse than butter, but when comparing

Analysis Of The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
The memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, explicates the author's dysfunctional childhood
and how it resulted from poor parenting. Throughout the beginning of the book, Walls continues to
be optimistic and grateful for the few objects she owns and what little parent support she receives.
This contributes to the tone of how positivity can aid those in coping with problematic events.
Although Walls is unable to escape her source of problems, as a child with irresponsible adults, her
undying faith in her parents caused her to make injudicious decisions. This contributes to the tone of
how false positivity can lead to oblivion. Walls is very ignorant as a child, especially when it comes
to the myriad of injurious occurrences taking place.

Butter Vs Margarine : Q. What 's The Problem With Butter?
FAQs Butter vs Margarine
Q. What's the problem with butter?
Butter is around 50% saturated fat – that's the unhealthy fat that raises our cholesterol levels.
Margarine is a much healthier choice because it has a maximum of only 20% saturated fat.
Used daily in place of butter, margarine helps us to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
Q. But it's still 20% saturated fat – surely none would be better?
All fats and oils are made up of varying amounts of healthy and unhealthier fats.
It is the ratio of these types of fats that determine the healthiness of oil.
Less than 20% saturates is a healthier oil, butter is about 50% and coconut oil is about 90%
saturates. Q. But I only use a small amount, so surely that's ok isn't it?
Most of us are eating too much saturated fat.
Replacing butter with margarine is an easy way to lower our intake of saturated fat and lower our
risk of CVD. Small amounts every day add up to large amounts over time. By switching butter for
margarine on your morning toast and sandwiches at lunch, you're removing almost
3kg of saturated fat from your diet in a year.
Q. Butter is natural and margarine is highly processed, so I know it can't be better.
'Natural' isn't a reliable indicator of health on its own. Many so called natural foods are not healthy
including lard, sea salt and coconut oil.
The healthiness of a food is determined by considering the whole food– such as the amount of
unhealthy fat it contains as well as the amount of salt, kilojoules

The original definition of the word "advertising" does not look that bad. It is simply explained as
"calling the attention of the public to a product or business." However, the advertising companies
usually abuse the real meaning of advertising and try to sell their product no matter what it takes to

The Impact Of Technology On Evolution Of Knowledge
There are many false claims in the science world that goes back and forth on their ideas and
sometimes it 's the public 's choice to decide which fact is reliable. With research, it is shown that
people believed what others thought were true without needing evidence to back up the claim. With
new technology it became easier for the people to judge which claim is accurate due to the new
science findings that supports that specific subject claim. Scientific facts are explained by evidence
proven by multiple experiments that are tested by many other scientists. If a scientific claim is
proven to be true, why is it that in some cases after years of studying the 'fact' are re–evaluated and
proven to be false? To what extent does development of technology play a role in the evolution of
knowledge? How do we know what scientific fact is reliable?
When a new scientific theory or claim is made, the scientist tries to confirm it is the truth by using
new technology to test out their idea. Some of the time, their old claim is outdated or falsified and
they must admit they were wrong. Remember before 2006 people thought Pluto was the 9th planet
from the sun? International Astronomical Union changed the status of Pluto by reclassifying as a
dwarf planet because it did not meet the criteria of a planet. More significant claims have been made
and many people are aware of some well–known superseded scientific theories and wonder why
they were believed to be true in the first place.

Food Emulsions: an Important Mix
Food Emulsions: An Important Mix
Food emulsions are everywhere in today's food industry. From the milk poured with a bowl of
cereal in the morning to the margarine used to flavor rolls at dinner, food emulsions are something
that an individual will encounter on a daily basis. By formal definition, a food emulsion is defined
as, "a colloidal dispersion of two liquids, usually oil and water, that are immiscible." (Murano
2003). To better understand what this definition is stating, a colloidal dispersion must also be
defined. A colloidal dispersion is a dispersion of food colloids, a dispersed phase, into a continuous
phase such as water or oil. Keep in mind, however, that a colloidal dispersion is not a solution, and
the two liquids are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emulsifiers are used to hold emulsions together, whether they are of the O/W, W/O, W/O/W, or
O/W/O variety. Some examples of emulsifiers are Lecithins, monoglycerides, and diglycerides. A
few more specific emulsifiers are Calcium Stearoyl Di Laciate (CSL), PolyGlycerol Ester (PGE),
Sorbitan Ester (SOE), PG Ester (PGME), Sugar Ester (SE), Monoglyceride (MG), Acetylated
Monoglyceride (AMG), and Lactylated Monoglyceride (LMG). All of these emulsifiers are
amphiphilic molecules with an oil–friendly (hydrophobic) head and water–friendly (hydrophilic)
tail. An example of the use of an emulsifier is the addition of lecithin to egg yolks when used as an
ingredient in mayonnaise. Without the lecithin, the oil in the mayonnaise would rise to the top and
create separation of the ingredients, causing an unstable emulsion. This demonstrates the necessity
of the emulsifier lecithin used in mayonnaise. A vast array of applications for food emulsions have
been demonstrated, and because of this there is no one company that has a monopoly on this
specific industry of food science and production. That being said, Unilever Inc. generates significant
revenues from products using this technique. Unilever is one of the leaders in world food production
with their 11 largest brands combining to reap more than a billion dollars annually in revenues.

Implementing lean six sigma for process improvement Essay
IMPLEMENTING LEAN SIX SIGMA FOR PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
ILI MARINI BT ZAINAL ABIDIN
1. ABSTRACT
Lean Six Sigma approach is recognized widely and has been implemented predominately in
manufacturing rather than other industries. To illustrate the point, this paper draws attention to the
adoption of Lean Six Sigma in various industries with a case study. The combination of Lean tools
and Six Sigma methodology is used to improve the process and quality by eliminating the variations
and creating workflow in a process. The hypothesis of this study was that the Six Sigma technique
can be used along with lean tools in order to improve process and quality in any area of industries.

3.2 Six Sigma
The concept of Six Sigma was developed in the early 1980's at Motorola Corporation (Harry and
Schroeder, 2000). Six Sigma can be defined as a statistical measure of the performance of a process
or product (Kumi et. al., 2006). It is used as a quality control mechanism, which seeks to reduce
defects or variations in a process to 3.4 per million opportunities thereby optimizing output and
increasing customer satisfaction (Sambhe, 2012). Sigma is representing the standard deviation, a
unit of measurement that designates the distribution or spread about the mean of a process (Six
Sigma Academy, 2002). In addition, the Six Sigma uniquely driven by close understanding of
customer needs, disciplined use of fact, data, and statistical analysis, and diligent attention to
managing improving, and reinventing business processes (Pande, P., et. al. 2000). The Six Sigma
methodology uses statistical tools to identify the factors that matter most for improving the quality
of processes and generating bottom–line results. The Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure,

The Long Term Success Of German Discount Grocery Stores
The researcher examined the reasons for the long–term success of German discount grocery stores.
German discount grocery stores, such as ALDI, have dominated the German retail food sector and
continue to grow. In many parts of Germany the discount grocers have been so successful that they
are becoming oligopolies. The long–term success of the German discount grocers is related to the
price of products, product selection, choice of store location, and size of new stores. Jurgens gives
credit to the creation of discount stores to German discount food giant ALDI. ALDI has gone
through great lengths to standardize its stores and maintain a consistent area per store. Many of
ALDI stores are 500–1000 square meters of retail space with large parking lots. The location of
discount grocers was determined to be in peripheral urban locations, on arterial roads, or in
commercial business parks. Discount grocers were also found to choose locations that increase their
attractiveness in strategic clusters near other complementary retailers.
Private label brands are a growing product offering worldwide. The researchers attempt to
understand the factors that have influence the growth and expansion of private label brands. Private
label brands are compared to national brands and the influence the private label brands have on
consumers' purchase intentions. Consumers' intentions to purchase private label brands are
influenced by more than just prices. The researchers found that private

Trans Fats And Its Effects On Human Health
Partially hydrogenated oils: These types of oils have the purpose of giving a longer shelf life to food
and giving more stability to oils that are usually liquid at room temperature. By partially
hydrogenating certain oils, food industries can make liquid oils solid and sustain a food's flavor and
the length it can remain on shelves. This types of oil, PHOs, make up most of the artificial trans fats
in many foods. PHOs are created by chemically altering the chemical bonds of the oils by adding
hydrogen molecules to create a solid oil. This type of oil has a negative impact on human health and
the FDA recently decided that PHOs were regarded as not "generally recognized as safe" for human
consumption. Since PHOs are the main source of trans fats in American's diets, they have been
linked to an increased risk of heart disease that could lead to heart attacks and death. Hydrogenated
oils: Like partially hydrogenated oils, hydrogenated oils are used to create solids out of naturally
liquid oils to lengthen the life of products. Adding these oils to food also acts as a preservative for
foods and improve texture and taste. Hydrogenated oils are created by heating them at high
temperatures for several hours, then adding a metal catalyst that creates the denser, thicker substance
used in foods. The molecule of the fat is straightened by adding bonds. These oils are also shown to
contribute to higher blood pressure levels and higher cholesterol levels in humans. Since these types

sugar, mix them together. Add the peanut butter to the batter then mix again. In the small cup crack
each egg separately, and add the yolk part to the batter and stir. Set the mixture aside for the time
being. In the other large bowl measure out and sift the flour, baking soda, and salt. Once sifted

Pass the Potato Chips Essay
Pass the Potato Chips
Has mankind discovered some fantastic substitute for fat to enable people to eat as many snacks as
possible without gaining weight? Recently, Proctor & Gamble developed Olestra (sucrose
polyester), a zero calorie fat–based substitute, at a cost of $200 million. This product has been
approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) with warning labels.
What is olestra?
The olestra molecule differs from a fat molecule in that it has six to eight fatty acids on a sucrose
core, as opposed to three fatty acids on a glycerol core. The bulkier olestra molecule is not digested,
absorbed , or metabolized, and thus provides no calories" (Stern & Hermann–Zaidins ,1992 ). It has
the same taste and texture of fat, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Are there any side effects?
There are some interesting drawbacks to olestra. Olestra causes diarrhea and affects the absorption
of Vitamins A, D, E, and K. In essence, olestra acts like a giant sponge, taking nutrients out of the
body before they have a chance to be absorbed in the intestines. "Olestra may cause abdominal
cramping and loose stools in some individuals, and inhibits the body's absorption of certain fat–
soluble vitamins and nutrients," said Commissioner of Food and Drugs, David A. Kessler, M.D. (
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/NEW00524.html). In one study, almost one–half of the group
reported having diarrhea, bloating, and gas disturbances after eating eight grams of olestra, the
equivalent of less than the amount of olestra in one ounce of potato chips
(http://plainfield.bypass.com/%7Etwilbur/olestra.html). Since olestra blocks Vitamins A, D, E, and
K, these nutrients cannot protect us against disease. The FDA requires that Vitamins A, D, E, and K
be added to all products with olestra. Olestra also blocks the absorption of beta–carotene. Foods rich
in beta–carotene, such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and many other fruits and vegetables
protect the immune system, and act as a buffer against cancer and heart disease. "Studies have
shown that eating even a small snack bag of olestra–fried potato chips can reduce blood levels of
beta–carotene by 60%"

One application of the iodine number is the determination of the amount of unsaturation contained
in fatty acids. This unsaturation is in the form of double bonds which react with iodine compounds.
The higher the iodine number, the more unsaturated fatty acid bonds are present in a fat. In a typical
procedure the acid is treated with an excess of Wij's iodine solution which a solution of iodine
monochloride (ICl) in glacial acetic acid. The iodine concentration is then determined by titration
with sodium thiosulfate. Iodine value is the average unsaturation measurement in fat sample.
Although iodine value is expressed as the weight of iodine added to 100 g of sample, the analytical
procedure used to determine the iodine normally use iodine monochloride in acetic acid solution
(Wijs' reagent) as halogenations agent.
Objective
1) To determine the free fatty acid found in oil.
2) To differentiate between the free fatty acid formed during the hydrolysis process and oxidation
process.
3) To understand the relationship between acid value and free fatty acid
4) To determine the iodine value (IV) in oil

Today Unilever is one of the world's largest consumer products companies. Becel Margarine was
launched in 1978 as a premium priced product, positioned as the heart healthy margarine of choice.
Previously, the Becel brand had been positioned as the heart healthy margarine of choice in Europe
for twenty years prior to Canadian introduction. Despite unique positioning Becel struggled for
many years gaining only 8.1 percent market share by 1991. Unilever considered several options for
growing the Becel brand, such as, price decreases, repositioning the product, and dramatic increases
in advertising support. In 1991 Lipton devised the strategy "living a life that is young at heart". This
strategy was very successful with its current target market, 65 and above. In the butter and
margarine category, butter holds fifty percent of the market. The Dairy Bureau of Canada positions
butter as tasty and natural, which is conveying that margarine is processed and does not taste as
good. However, that is not true, margarine is better for you than butter and does suit consumers'
tastes. In addition, the health focus of the butter and margarine market is growing. More and more
competitors are positioning their product as healthy for the consumer. For example, Parmalat is a
brand of butter that has just entered the margarine market to compete with Becel with the brand
Lactantia.

FATS AND OIL DEFINITION: Fats and oils, group of organic substances that form an important
part of the diet and also are useful in many industries. The fats are usually solid, the oils generally
liquid at ordinary room temperatures. Some tropical products, liquids in their sites of origin, become
solids in cooler climates; in commerce these often retain the name originally given, e.g., palm oil
and coconut oil. Chemically fats and oils are either simple or mixed glyceryl esters of organic acids

They also provide nutrients to help develop and maintain your body's cells. Monounsaturated fats
are found predominantly in olives, olive oil, sunflower and sesame oils, nuts and nut oils, as well as
seeds. Recommendation: There is no need to limit your intake of monounsaturated fats. Consume
extra virgin olive oil or other nut oils that are unrefined. Cold pressed and Expeller pressed oils are
the best oils to choose as they retain most of their nutritious properties. Choose organic whenever
possible. Polyunsaturated Fats Polyunsaturated fats are associated with both positive and negative
effects, which are directly attributed to the ratio of omega–6 to omega–3 fatty acids in the diet.
These terms refer to the chemical make–up of the types of fats, which each affect the body in
different ways. We need to have both of these fats in our diets, in approximately a ratio of 1:1.
However, Americans tend to consume way too many omega–6 fats. The omega–6 to –3 ratio is
currently between 20:1 and 40:1 for most Americans whereas a hundred years ago it was much
closer to 1:1. This dramatic shift toward omega–6 dominance is believed to have much to do with
the rise of chronic illness in the past century. In fact, it has been found that people diagnosed with
learning disorders, depression and schizophrenia can have ratios in the range of 50:1 to 70:1!!
Inflammation is a common component of many of today's chronic disease conditions: heart disease,

Can You Use Olive Or Margarine With Olive Oil?
Most of the questions that friends have asked me over the years when it comes to cooking and
baking have one thing in common: how to combine taste with health. I am going to attempt to
answer 5 of those questions with some healthy and tasty tips! 1. Can you use olive oil in cookies and
cakes and will they taste good? The answer to those questions is yes and yes! You can replace butter
or margarine with olive oil. The secret is to beat the olive oil with an electric mixer until it turns
white. In the process, it will also lose its distinctive odor. That can take up to 20 minutes but it 's
well worth your trouble. 2. Is there a healthy topping for ice cream? Chocolate and fudge syrups add
empty calories to ice cream. You can surely do without them. Try making this topping instead: wash
well and quarter half a pound strawberries. Put them in a bowl and add 2 tbsp water, one tsp sweet
liquor of your preference and finally, one tbsp sugar. Put the lid on the bowl and refrigerate for at
least 2 hours. When it 's ready, you will have a mouth–watering syrup as well as delicious
strawberries to top the ice cream with. 3. Can you have something that 's as tasty as ice cream but
with fewer calories, much less sugar and very little or no fat at all? Here 's an extremely easy
solution: One cup (8 oz) low–fat or no–fat plain yogurt Your favorite jello (mine is strawberry)

Unsaturated Fat Lab Report
Heart Healthy Fat In this experiment the amount of fat will be seen in four different types
margarine. Margarine is mostly made of water and fat. There are two different types of fat, saturated
and unsaturated. Saturated fat can increase the chance of heart disease, but unsaturated fat has the
reverse effect of decreasing the chance of heart disease. This experiment will indicate which type of
margarine is healthiest according to the amount of unsaturated fat and the amount of water in each
brand, and also determine which . In the four margarine samples each should have slightly different
amounts of water and unsaturated fat in them. Which margarine will have the most unsaturated fat?
Which one will have the most water? By the opposite polarity of water and fat, the two will easily
separate in a microwave, and once the water and fat are separated amounts of each can be observed.
Among the four kinds margarine, the Blue Bonnet Light is expected to contain the most water and
the Country Crock Light is expected to have the most unsaturated fat. These are expected because of

Drinking too much water will kill you. However, this is not a reason for the government to regulate
how much water people drink. There are many dangers in life that the public should be informed of
in order to shape their decisions. Eating too much fatty food can cause serious health issues or
death, but the government should not regulate what types and quantities of foods Americans eat. The
solution to obesity cannot come from government control of what we eat, but instead, must come
from informing the public about nutrition and health. A well–informed public will make more

No one, with all the information available today, could blame the fast food corporations for their
own obesity if they choose to eat fast food every day for every meal. The movie, Super Size Me
starring Morgan Spurlock, is very realistic in portraying how someone's health will respond to binge
eating fast food. This documentary explores the consequences of eating only McDonalds for a
month. No intelligent individual could possibly be surprised by the outcome: gaining weight and
raising his body mass index (BMI). Although his health problems were extreme, including near–
catastrophic liver damage, his course of action was extreme as well. This movie shows that the
people who develop serious health problems from eating fast food are those who are completely
oblivious to health and insist on eating greasy fast food for every meal. In fact, Scott Caswell
provides a different, more realistic perspective in his movie, Bowling for Morgan, where he eats
more sensible meals, losing twenty pounds and lowering his cholesterol. Caswell claims, "You don't
get fat by eating McDonald's. You get fat by overeating while making documentaries about getting
fat." If you try to make yourself become fat or are irresponsible enough to not make good decisions,
then you will get fat. However, people who want to spoil themselves at certain times should not be

Argumentative Essay On Drinking Milk
You always hear your mom or dad say, "Drink your milk, so you can get stronger!" but is milk
really making you strong, or is it actually hurting you? Scientists say, Dairy consumption can play a
role in asthma, Parkinson's disease, and highly elevated blood pressure. Dairy is highly
inflammatory, causing issues like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and acne. When you drink
milk, you are actually consuming far more than just milk. American dairy farmers have long been
injecting cows with a genetically engineered bovine growth hormone called rBGH to increase milk
production(MindBodyGreen), So what are you really putting in your body that according to your
parents makes you "Big and Strong"? In this paper, I tell you the truth about the three most common
dairy products that just might leave you speechless. Dairy consumption can lead to fatal diseases.
The average amount of serving you pay per gallon is 25 cents. Why are you paying that if it's so
unhealthy? Over the years, scientist and nutritionist have created lactose free, dairy free, and soy
free milk. A popular brand that we often consume is Silk. It's free of all of soy, lactose, and dairy.

Why Do Solutes Dissolve
Analysis
Before I start the experiment, I predicted that all crystal form solutes would dissolve while powder
form solutes will not, but my prediction was partially supported. A baking soda was a one that
showed an unexpectedly result because even though it is in a powder form, it dissolved in the water.
Except for a baking soda, everything could be observed from what I predicted. Sugar and salt,
which are in a crystal form dissolved in water and had high solubility while flour and cornstarch,
which are in a powder form didn't dissolve and had low solubility.
When we experimented with different solvents, the result showed that water was the best solvent to
dissolve solutes because it dissolved the most of solutes, such as sugar and salt. Alcohol was the
most inefficient solvent because it wasn't able to dissolve any sugar, salt and, margarine. Vegetable
oil was also able to only dissolve margarine partially.
Conclusion
The data shows sugar and salt had high solubility in water. From that result, I can conclude they are
polar. Salt is made up of positively and negatively charged ions and sugar is made with hydrogen

McNeil would then purchase stanol ester exclusively from Raisio, make the products containing the ester, and send these products to market and promote them. McNeil had budgeted over US$80 million for the promotional commitment (Moffett & Howard, 1999). Two other items that were covered in the agreement between Raisio and Johnson & Johnson pertained to payments that would be made to Raisio. Raisio would receive royalties on the sales of all products containing Benecol and they would also receive milestone payments. Their success was based on its innovation to create technology to extract and produce the main ingredient in Benecol. By using a differentiation advantage which singled them out in a very specific market (foods that lower cholesterol) they were able to put plans in place to guarantee the success of the product. By merging with J&J, they create a large market for their product with multiple distribution capabilities. Because differentiation is only affected when consumers are made aware, Benecol was marketed widely to lower cholesterol and most people know it now as a "health food" (Grant, 2010). The process of innovation and competition is also very important in the position that Benecol is in its life cycle. The product began with short production runs, with limited specialized distribution channels in 1996. It then emerged into the growth stage of its life cycle when it partnered with J& J to create multiple product lines, mass production, and competition for distribution. Benecol seems to be in its Maturity stage at the present time, allowing for long production runs, and distributors carrying fewer lines, due to economy and less demand for high end food products (Grant, 2010). • 19. Butter Vs Margarine : Q. What 's The Problem With Butter? FAQs Butter vs Margarine Q. Less than 20% saturates is a healthier oil, butter is about 50% and coconut oil is about 90% saturates. Q. But I only use a small amount, so surely that's ok isn't it? Most of us are eating too much saturated fat. Replacing butter with margarine is an easy way to lower our intake of saturated fat and lower our risk of CVD. Small amounts every day add up to large amounts over time. By switching butter for margarine on your morning toast and sandwiches at lunch, you're removing almost 3kg of saturated fat from your diet in a year. Q. Butter is natural and margarine is highly processed, so I know it can't be better. 'Natural' isn't a reliable indicator of health on its own. Trans Fats And Its Effects On Human Health Partially hydrogenated oils: These types of oils have the purpose of giving a longer shelf life to food and giving more stability to oils that are usually liquid at room temperature. By partially hydrogenating certain oils, food industries can make liquid oils solid and sustain a food's flavor and the length it can remain on shelves. This types of oil, PHOs, make up most of the artificial trans fats in many foods. PHOs are created by chemically altering the chemical bonds of the oils by adding hydrogen molecules to create a solid oil. This type of oil has a negative impact on human health and the FDA recently decided that PHOs were regarded as not "generally recognized as safe" for human consumption. Since PHOs are the main source of trans fats in American's diets, they have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease that could lead to heart attacks and death. Hydrogenated oils: Like partially hydrogenated oils, hydrogenated oils are used to create solids out of naturally liquid oils to lengthen the life of products. Adding these oils to food also acts as a preservative for foods and improve texture and taste. Hydrogenated oils are created by heating them at high temperatures for several hours, then adding a metal catalyst that creates the denser, thicker substance used in foods. The molecule of the fat is straightened by adding bonds. These oils are also shown to contribute to higher blood pressure levels and higher cholesterol levels in humans. Since these types of ... • 28. Pass the Potato Chips Essay Pass the Potato Chips Has mankind discovered some fantastic substitute for fat to enable people to eat as many snacks as possible without gaining weight? Recently, Proctor & Gamble developed Olestra (sucrose polyester), a zero calorie fat–based substitute, at a cost of $200 million. This product has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) with warning labels. What is olestra? The olestra molecule differs from a fat molecule in that it has six to eight fatty acids on a sucrose core, as opposed to three fatty acids on a glycerol core. The bulkier olestra molecule is not digested, absorbed , or metabolized, and thus provides no calories" (Stern & Hermann–Zaidins ,1992 ). It has the same taste and texture of fat, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Are there any side effects? There are some interesting drawbacks to olestra. Olestra causes diarrhea and affects the absorption of Vitamins A, D, E, and K. In essence, olestra acts like a giant sponge, taking nutrients out of the body before they have a chance to be absorbed in the intestines. "Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools in some individuals, and inhibits the body's absorption of certain fat– soluble vitamins and nutrients," said Commissioner of Food and Drugs, David A. Kessler, M.D. ( http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/NEW00524.html). In one study, almost one–half of the group reported having diarrhea, bloating, and gas disturbances after eating eight grams of olestra, the equivalent of less than the amount of olestra in one ounce of potato chips (http://plainfield.bypass.com/%7Etwilbur/olestra.html). Since olestra blocks Vitamins A, D, E, and K, these nutrients cannot protect us against disease. The FDA requires that Vitamins A, D, E, and K be added to all products with olestra. Olestra also blocks the absorption of beta–carotene. Foods rich in beta–carotene, such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and many other fruits and vegetables protect the immune system, and act as a buffer against cancer and heart disease. "Studies have shown that eating even a small snack bag of olestra–fried potato chips can reduce blood levels of beta–carotene by 60%" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This unsaturation is in the form of double bonds which react with iodine compounds. The higher the iodine number, the more unsaturated fatty acid bonds are present in a fat. In a typical procedure the acid is treated with an excess of Wij's iodine solution which a solution of iodine monochloride (ICl) in glacial acetic acid. The iodine concentration is then determined by titration with sodium thiosulfate. Iodine value is the average unsaturation measurement in fat sample. Although iodine value is expressed as the weight of iodine added to 100 g of sample, the analytical procedure used to determine the iodine normally use iodine monochloride in acetic acid solution (Wijs' reagent) as halogenations agent. Previously, the Becel brand had been positioned as the heart healthy margarine of choice in Europe for twenty years prior to Canadian introduction. Despite unique positioning Becel struggled for many years gaining only 8.1 percent market share by 1991. Unilever considered several options for growing the Becel brand, such as, price decreases, repositioning the product, and dramatic increases in advertising support. In 1991 Lipton devised the strategy "living a life that is young at heart". This strategy was very successful with its current target market, 65 and above. In the butter and margarine category, butter holds fifty percent of the market. The Dairy Bureau of Canada positions butter as tasty and natural, which is conveying that margarine is processed and does not taste as good. However, that is not true, margarine is better for you than butter and does suit consumers' tastes. In addition, the health focus of the butter and margarine market is growing. Cold pressed and Expeller pressed oils are the best oils to choose as they retain most of their nutritious properties. Choose organic whenever possible. Polyunsaturated Fats Polyunsaturated fats are associated with both positive and negative effects, which are directly attributed to the ratio of omega–6 to omega–3 fatty acids in the diet. These terms refer to the chemical make–up of the types of fats, which each affect the body in different ways. We need to have both of these fats in our diets, in approximately a ratio of 1:1. However, Americans tend to consume way too many omega–6 fats. The omega–6 to –3 ratio is currently between 20:1 and 40:1 for most Americans whereas a hundred years ago it was much closer to 1:1. This dramatic shift toward omega–6 dominance is believed to have much to do with the rise of chronic illness in the past century. In fact, it has been found that people diagnosed with learning disorders, depression and schizophrenia can have ratios in the range of 50:1 to 70:1!! There are two different types of fat, saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fat can increase the chance of heart disease, but unsaturated fat has the reverse effect of decreasing the chance of heart disease. This experiment will indicate which type of margarine is healthiest according to the amount of unsaturated fat and the amount of water in each brand, and also determine which . In the four margarine samples each should have slightly different amounts of water and unsaturated fat in them. Which margarine will have the most unsaturated fat? Which one will have the most water? By the opposite polarity of water and fat, the two will easily separate in a microwave, and once the water and fat are separated amounts of each can be observed. Among the four kinds margarine, the Blue Bonnet Light is expected to contain the most water and the Country Crock Light is expected to have the most unsaturated fat. No intelligent individual could possibly be surprised by the outcome: gaining weight and raising his body mass index (BMI). Although his health problems were extreme, including near– catastrophic liver damage, his course of action was extreme as well. Scientists say, Dairy consumption can play a role in asthma, Parkinson's disease, and highly elevated blood pressure. Dairy is highly inflammatory, causing issues like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and acne. When you drink milk, you are actually consuming far more than just milk. American dairy farmers have long been injecting cows with a genetically engineered bovine growth hormone called rBGH to increase milk production(MindBodyGreen), So what are you really putting in your body that according to your parents makes you "Big and Strong"? In this paper, I tell you the truth about the three most common dairy products that just might leave you speechless. Dairy consumption can lead to fatal diseases. Why Do Solutes Dissolve Analysis Before I start the experiment, I predicted that all crystal form solutes would dissolve while powder form solutes will not, but my prediction was partially supported. A baking soda was a one that showed an unexpectedly result because even though it is in a powder form, it dissolved in the water. Except for a baking soda, everything could be observed from what I predicted. Sugar and salt, which are in a crystal form dissolved in water and had high solubility while flour and cornstarch, which are in a powder form didn't dissolve and had low solubility. When we experimented with different solvents, the result showed that water was the best solvent to dissolve solutes because it dissolved the most of solutes, such as sugar and salt. Alcohol was the most inefficient solvent because it wasn't able to dissolve any sugar, salt and, margarine. Vegetable oil was also able to only dissolve margarine partially. Conclusion The data shows sugar and salt had high solubility in water. From that result, I can conclude they are polar.
