Family Vacations Growing up, vacations in the summer were always a big part of my life. Every
year we had at least one big vacation and several smaller ones along the way. As a family we did
everything from pulling a camper all the way to a national camping rally in Blyth, Ontario in
Canada to climbing to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. As fun as the trips were as a kid, nothing

Thomas, US Virgin Islands. After having an amazing breakfast at the ship buffet it was time to go
out on the island. Once we were off the ship we were greeted by a large amount of taxis that were
more than happy to take us where ever we wanted to go. For us, we were set up to go ziplining at the
top of the island. The view on the way up was simply beautiful. There was beautiful ocean views for
miles and many coconut trees too. We had a blast ziplining through the trees, but it was no where
near long enough. After our adventure that day it was time to get back on the ship and head our next
destination in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. After sailing all night we arrived at Tortola where we
were going to a popular island that had some of the most beautiful beach scenes in the world. There

In my personal opinion both companies did a great job at reaching their target audience. They

I am speaking to you today at the annual Caribbean Studies Association conference to discuss and
address the concerns and issues surrounding the rebuilding of many of the Caribbean islands, which
have been devastated after this past 2017 hurricane season. Hurricanes Irma and Maria, both
category four hurricanes, have wreaked havoc on the Caribbean islands of Barbuda, Puerto Rico,
and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both of these hurricanes were catastrophic, causing significant deaths
and infrastructure damages costing billions of dollars. Recently, it seems like there have been
significantly more of these types of disasters happening than in the past; and the intensity of these
disasters have increased as well. But let's delve into why these post–colonial societies are so
vulnerable to these types of natural disasters and what can be done to better prepare for these
disasters in the future, by looking at one of the large–scale earthquakes that has shaken the
Caribbean island of Haiti. Haiti was struck with "a magnitude size 7.0 earthquake...outside of the
Haitian capital of Port au Prince" (COHA 2) in January 2010. This disaster killed several hundred
thousand people and caused many others to no longer have their homes. Billions of dollars in aid
have assisted Haiti in their efforts to rebuild the country. But, "three years later, 80 percent of the
population still subsists below the poverty line with an unemployment rate of 40 percent" (COHA

For any person that went on vacations as a little kid, there will always be one that sticks out in their
mind. For me that vacation was a 2008 Disney cruise in the Bahamas. As a second grader getting to
miss school was a big deal. This vacation just happened to be during the last week of school that
year. I was incredibly excited to not only miss school but also get to go see a new place. In my
family we love to travel. I've been in 3 countries and 14 or more states. This vacation was my start
to all of these places and sparked my love to see the world. One of the reasons this vacation
influenced my love of travel was that this was the first time I had been on a big plane. I love to fly
places. Flying is a lot faster than driving places and with two brothers that makes a huge difference.
On this vacation I visited one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, one of the British Virgin Islands, and
Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Every day of the trip we were either at port on one of these
islands or spending our day on the boat on the way to one of these islands. When we were at port on
any of the islands we were given a time to be back then we were set free to get off of the boat and
explore the island at our own pace. We took a bus tour on one of the islands but on the others we got
out and visited some of the little shops or went to the beach for a day in the sand.

Innovation Index 2013 , Dominican Republic's strengths count ecological sustainability, as in the
low amount of energy used per person and growth rate of GDP per worker. Also, there is a large
pool of local artisans that produce creative goods, which are often exported, bringing in profit for
the nation.
In contrast, Dominican Republic also has weaknesses such as the lack of funding into education,
contributing to the unemployment rate of 15% and the lack of qualified candidates on the job
market. Furthermore, the number of students in schools exceeds the number of teachers available
and universities in Dominican Republic are usually subject to low rankings compared to other
universities in the Latin Americas. Proper health care is also a disadvantage in Dominican Republic
and locals do not trust their own government, due to corruption. The Research and Development
sector rates poorly, leading to knowledge and technology outputs also being rated poor in the Global
Innovation Index. Finally, within the investment sector, the lack of venture capital deals, along with
low domestic credit to the private sector are counted as current weaknesses within the Dominican
Republic.

benefits to the economic statuses of several countries. There are two types of dollarization: official
and unofficial. In the process of official dollarization, a state gives complete monetary control to a
foreign nation, ceding its right to both create a central bank and issue a domestic form of currency.
Where as a nation loses its sovereignty to make decisions concerning its money supply in official
dollarization, unofficial dollarization allows states to keep most of its control in place. Nations who
implement dollarization unofficially keep their ability to own a central bank to fall back on, in cases

McFarland adds information about taxation by the U.S. in the Virgin Islands. He focuses mainly on
the Tax Reform of 1986 in his article. In McFarland's findings, the tax reform would prevent tax
loopholes within the Islands. For example, Virgin Islands inhabitants would not pay the amount of
taxes continental U.S. citizens would. This shows that the residents do not believe they so be taxed
