Rodney King Police Brutality
A car chase emerged in Los Angeles, California after Rodney King, along with two other
passengers, refused to be pulled over by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) who were attempting
to initiate a traffic stop. King feared being pulled over would put him at risk, for he had been
drinking and was on parole, but ultimately decided it was the only thing he could do. Once his
vehicle came to a halt and him and the two passengers exited, he was targeted by members of the
Los Angeles Police Department and became a victim of police brutality. George Holliday, who
resided at the apartments across the street from the scene, managed to film footage that depicted Mr.
King undergoing aggressive and ultimately unnecessary physical punishment by various members of
the LAPD. The aggressors which attacked King were ultimately acquitted, leading to outrage and
destruction in the city of Los Angeles, widely known as the Rodney King Riots (npr.org).
On the night of March 3rd, 1991, the CHP began tailing Mr. King, however since he had alcohol in
his system, and he was aware it was a clear violation of his parole, he attempted to flee and it
resulted in a high–speed pursuit. "I had a job to go to that Monday, and I knew I was on parole, and I
knew I wasn't supposed to be drinking, and I'm like 'Oh, my God,'" he told CNN. "He realized he
could not outrun the police, [so] he looked for a public place to stop. 'I saw all those apartments over
there, so I said, "I'm gonna stop right there,"' he

My Family At Paris France
Image Analysis When I was in 6th grade my family went on a trip to Paris France. While there we
were able to explore the city and visit many well–known places such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre
and a royal palace called Versailles. The Versailles was originally built by a Louis XIII in 1623 as a
hunting lodge. In the years to come the building went through a few big expansions. After Louis
XIII died his son Louis XIV obtained Versailles and used it as his main residence and for the seat of
the government of the Kingdom of France. Also, the Versailles had enough rooms to be used for
most of the courtiers to stay there. My family and I were able to take a tour of the palace. While I
was on the tour we came into a room known as the Hercules Room. I walked in the room as was
shocked because of a sculpture in the middle of the room. Displayed in the middle of this room in an
immaculate ancient palace was an enormous metal sculpture of a dog shaped balloon animal.
Directly above the dog was a massive painting covering the ceiling named Apotheosis of Hercules
which was the reason the room itself was named Hercules Room. The reason I was surprised when I
walked into the room was because the dog balloon sculpture was extremely different than the ceiling
above it and everything surrounding it making it seem out of place. The Balloon Dog sculpture was
created by a man named Jeff Koons in 1994. The dog is an optimistic piece, it's similar to a balloon

Los Angeles Riots Case Study
Introduction In this new decade where political correctness trumps common sense, civil unrest often
leads to violent unrest.
Los Angeles Riots On March 3, 1991, Rodney King, an African American taxi driver on parole for a
robbery conviction, led two California Highway Patrol Officers, Tim and Melanie Singer (husband
and wife) on a high speed chase on the freeway in Los Angeles, California. He had been drinking
King refused to pull over and reached high speeds. He later said that this was because he didn't want
to get in trouble for violating his parole. During the chase, King drove at speeds from 55 to 88 miles
per hour and several police cars and a helicopter joined the pursuit.

In the year after the beating of Rodney King, over 100,000 local jobs disappeared. The Latino and
Black communities suffered greatly with a joint unemployment rate of thirteen percent and 29.7
percent in poverty. Many businesses pulled out of the Los Angeles area because of the riots. Los
Angeles is still showing the effects of the riots today with sixty–six percent of Black men and sixty–
eight percent of Black women facing unemployment. "In the ten years after the 1992 Los Angeles
riots, for example, the city lost nearly four billion dollars in taxable sales, according to research

Essay On Police Brutality
Police brutality is a dangerous and heinous problem that is happening in America today.
Demoralizing citizens rather than doing what they were hired to do which is protecting the citizens
of this country. Police brutality has become a limelight to the media which affects our viewpoint of
policing today. Police have gone out of their way to act unethically, which has led the reputation of
their department to go down. Many people today now have the bad connotation of police officers. In
this paper, I will be pointing out the issues of police brutality and the reasons behind it.
Police brutality is "the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful
police purpose." Police work is very stressful and often puts them in violent and dangerous
situations. Death is something that police must avoid probably every day, "on average, 64 police
officers per year were killed by criminals between 1980 and 2014, according to the Federal Bureau
of Investigations." (Roufa, 2017) Having to deal with these situations can take a toll on the police
office and change their viewpoint on society itself. The toll can be so bad that they can commit
suicide, "somewhere between 120 and 150 police officers commit suicide each year, at a rate of
about 17 suicides per 100,000 officers, 1.5 times higher than the rate of the general population and
nearly triple the number of officers killed by criminals each year." (Roufa, 2017) Often police find it

Plagiarism : A Fine Line Between Inspiration And Plagiarism
When it comes to artist's muses there is a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism. If one tries to
define the areas where art starts plagiarizing a body of work, they will most likely end up fighting in
circles. It is difficult to constitute where plagiarizing begins and inspiration ends. Artists have been
including copyrighted or trademarked work into their own pieces and then calling it their own for
decades, possibly even longer. Nowadays artists from all ends of the world are basing their work
around preexisting pieces or are using the likenesses surrounding them. This doesn't rest in the art
world either. Just recently in the news, there was a report that a successful lawsuit was brought
against Robin Thicke for his hit song "Blurred Lines." Marvin Gaye's estate brought a lawsuit
against Thicke for ripping off Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up." The ruling was in favor of Gaye,
resulting in Thicke owing $7.3 million to Gaye's family in damages (Grow, Kory). This case and
other cases have light shed on them from the media and then public debates ensue about which party
is in the right. Society has an array of opinions when it comes to copyright, fair use, and
appropriation. Many people do not understand the specifics about copyright laws nor do they
comprehend how one can truly break these laws fully. More often than not, people are familiar with
at least the phrases copyright, appropriation and fair use. But the legitimate points are fairly skewed
by the public.

Puppy Jeff Koon Analysis
The material artists use for their artwork can influence the overall message of the piece. Jeff Koon
works with a few different types of mediums which influence the image of the work. His piece
Puppy, is a large sculpture of a dog in front of a building. The skeleton of this piece is made of
stainless steel and is filled worth soil. The entire sculpture is covered with live flowering plants. I
really liked this piece because the artist is using a living medium to create his work. This gives the
dog a sense of being alive. In addition to this the medium used in this piece is very unexpected.
Most sculptures are made of clay, metal, wood, etc. yet Koon used flowers which is out of the
ordinary. Another sculpture by Koon is named Balloon Dog.

Rodney King Research Paper
On March 2, 1991 Rodney King and two of his friends sat in the car in Altadena, California drinking
malt liquor for many hours before deciding to take a drive. California Highway Patrol officers
spotted King driving at a high speed estimated to be above 100 m.p.h. With lights and sirens on the
officers began to follow King. They ordered him to pull over via the loudspeaker, but King did not
follow the order and continued to drive. After King did not pull over, the officers called for help.
The units of the Los Angeles Police Department joined in the pursuit. Petitioner Laurence Powell
and his trainee, Timothy Wind were two officers that joined the pursuit. King finally left the
highway after being chased for about eight miles. He stopped at the entrance of a recreation area.
The officers ordered King and his passengers to get out of the car and lie on the floor with their
hands behind their back. The two passengers followed the order, but King wasn't as cooperative.
Officers Stacey Koon, Ted Briseno and Roland Solano all began to approach King. Koon is a
sergeant, so he naturally took charge. The officers ordered King to assume the felony prone position
for the second time. King dropped to his hands and knees, but would not get in felony prone
position. King resisted and started to fight back, so the officers took steps back and fired taser darts.
The next part to occur was recorded by a bystander. The video first shows King rising from the
ground and charging toward officer

Research Paper On Police Brutality
Introduction
Police officers, who were once referred to as peace keepers, are now more law enforcement officers.
Police agencies around the United States seem to be stuck more on quotas and creating revenue for
their county or city. Making many officers strive for many unnecessary arrests. Which as a
following result has brought up a lot of tension between the police and their citizens. With
increasing violence in cities and states; police officers methods have slowly become more
aggressive, bringing a rise in unnecessary police brutality related incidents within the last 10 years.
In many countries there are laws which are protecting against police brutality. Under these laws,
police brutality is seen as a very serious offense and is investigated by district attorneys.
Unfortunately, even with the law covering police brutality, many complaints made by civilians about
excessive use of force are not investigated. Researchers suggest that it happens because the police
has the authority to use force when necessary, and, often, it is difficult to prove that police brutality
has taken place. More police officers now constantly record all interactions with civilians. Later on
the recorded conversations can be reviewed in the case of an investigation.
Summary
So what exactly causes police officers to engage in some type of brutality? There are three main
reasons that can break down why this is. It can either be a sociological, psychological, and/ or an
organizational

March 3rd, 1991. A day that has lived on in infamy for more than 20 years. Rodney King was just a
normal 25–year old guy who had a family, a job, people who loved him. He had work the next day,
so he decided to pop open some beers with one of his friends. According to King, around the time of
20th anniversary of the LA riots, "I know drinking and driving is not OK, and I shouldn't have been
back then, and there's no excuse for it. But I had a job to go to that Monday, and so I went over to a
friend's house and popped a couple of beers. We were just sitting around awhile, and I decided to go
to a spot where my dad used to take us fishing called Hansen Dam in California." (Martin 3) King
then said he saw the patrol car behind him and for no apparent reason at all did not pull over on the
side of the road, as people are supposed to do with cops. He finally pulled over and got out, and the
cops tasered him with 50,000 volts. Three officers then started to beat the crap out of King, hitting
him in the head, neck, kidneys, and legs, over 50 times. The beating was recorded by a passerby, and
sent out to every major news outlet in the country. However, this is only part of the context
surrounding the case of the Rodney King beating. Here are the rest of the facts. Rodney King had
been arrested twice before this, for differing offenses. While this does not excuse the cops'
behaviors, it does help to see every side and fact of the story to understand the whole better, as
opposed to just what the media portrayed. The first offense that King was arrested for was beating
his wife in her sleep on the night of July 27, 1987, and dragging her outside to beat her more
severely. He was charged with battery, and he entered a plea of "nolo contendre," which basically
means he did not plead guilty, but he accepted the facts as they were presented by the prosecution.
He was then put on probation. Then, more then 2 years later, on November 3, 1989, King was
arrested again for wielding a tire iron against a store clerk, and robbing the store of $200. He was
charged with second–degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. King pleaded guilty to the
robbery charge and was sentenced to two years in prison, but was paroled on

riots started the afternoon of April 29, 1992, when four white Los Angeles Police Department
officers were acquitted in the brutal, videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King.
Los Angeles was rocked by widespread rioting and acts of arson. The verdict was an unethical
climax to a year of political uproar and national outreach, and the reaction to it prompted Los
Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to declare a state of emergency and request assistance from the
National Guard as chaos spread from the city's mostly black south side to downtown Civic City

attacked at an intersection in Central Los Angeles.

Modern Art : Traditional Art Then And Now
Traditional Art then and now
When thinking of traditional art I tend to imagine the grandiose oil paintings or gestural sculptures
of figures displayed in the various national galleries I have visited, this to me, is what I think of
being 'traditional' in terms of art. A more general description of traditional art is; "Art that is a part of
the culture of a group of people, skills and knowledge of which are passed down through
generations from master craftsmen to apprentices." (www.yourdictonary.com, 14/11/2017). whereas
I do to a extent agree with this statement, I am however conscious that in the current day the term
'traditional art' is used in opposition with digital art. So therefore in the digital era traditional art can
be seen as an art form that is created with a physical and tangible medium, usually painting or
sculpture, as opposed to art created using digital means. Art has been around since the dawn of man,
as a form of expression, a way to make sense of the world. From the primitive animal paintings in
caves to the beautifully intricate and highly skilled oil paintings by artist like Titian and Rembrandt
during the high Renaissance. Oil paintings have always had a tangibility to them, they exist in the
world as a physical object, one that is displayed usually with great intention. In galleries they are
held in high esteem as objects of value and prestige. Nonetheless traditionally art was usually in
generality displayed two different types of places,

On March 2, 1991, a brutal beating of a 26 year old man by the Los Angeles Police department, set
tensions high between the black community and the police department, not only in Los Angeles but
all across the country. This is not only considered an extremely controversial incident, but also a
contradicting case. Is it a coincidence, or has the justice system failed to charge and imprison police
officers who use excessive force on black members of society? By analyzing the incidents leading
up to this event, the actual evidence presented in the trial, and the police reports and conversations
post beating of Rodney King, it will be clear whether or not justice was served and how the results
of this trial affected the Los Angeles community, and policing in the U.S for years to come.

History Of The 1992 Los Angeles Riots
The 1992 Los Angeles Riots Los Angeles today is widely known for its urban and constantly
changing culture, but 25 years ago, people throughout the nation were watching the riots and
destruction of the city. In 1992, Los Angeles was a place of chaos and massive rioting so large that
people feared even going into the city. These rebels against society were fighting for five days
straight, causing a disturbance so large that $1.3 billion dollars in damages left the city a burning
mess. The rioters were fighting because of the outcome of the trial of Rodney King's assaulters,
leading to the five day storm of terror and destruction that forever changed the United States. The
1992 Los Angeles Riots began with the trial of Rodney King's assaulters, which lead to the
beginning and end of the five day riots, leaving a horrific aftermath that affected people all over the
nation and still affects society even today. On March 3, 1991, Rodney King, a paroled felon from
Los Angeles, led officers on a high–speed chase throughout Los Angeles County. Eventually, King
stopped for the officers and surrendered. "Blacks, particularly young males, complained that they
were often stopped by police and 'proned out'––made to lie face down with legs and arms spread and
palms up––for minor traffic violations or for no reason at all." says Lou Cannon. (Cannon) After

How Did M. Claude Screws Use Corruption In Law Enforcement
Introduction
For as long as there have been Police Officers society has had to deal with misconduct and
corruption in the institution. Through the nineteenth century, police officers became muscle
employers used to violently end strikes. The rough police officiating and the racist Klu Klux Klan
prompted the Civil Rights Act of 1871. The "anti–Klan bill", intended to enforce both the Fourteenth
Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which was the first federal law passed defining
United States citizenship and affirm that all citizens are equally protected by the law. The 1871 Civil

United States was decided by the Supreme Court in 1945. The case involved police brutality were
the victim was killed. The federal government prosecuted the police officers after the State of
Georgia refused to do so. M. Claude Screws was Sheriff of Baker County, Georgia. Screws knew the
victim well, they had been in confrontation over a pistol seized from the victim Robert Hall. On
January 29, 1943 Screws had two officers arrest Hall on charges of stealing a tire. The three men
drove Hall to the town square and beat him with their fists and a two pound blackjack in front of the
courthouse. They did it in plain sight, as residents watched from their homes. The State of Georgia
failed to bring charges on the three men, Screws and the other two officers even though repeated
suits by the federal government were placed, "a jury in Albany, Georgia, convicted all three
defendants of violating Section 242, rejecting the officers' claim that the beating had been justified
in self–defense."(Watford, 2014) Section 242 was too vague and could not be used to trial because
the defendants argued they were not sure which rights it protected. There was a debate between the
Supreme Court Justices if the vagueness of Section 242 would lead to a mistrial. The Court's
formation of Section 242 had introduced a "radical revolution" in the balance of power between the
National Government and the States. Justice Frankfurter argued that, "because the defendants
violated Georgia law by committing murder, this was a purely local crime–enforcement matter that
had always been left to the domain of the States"(Watford, 2014) The federal government were now
going to be able to make all lawless acts by any police officer a federal crime and Section 242 had
survived. The survival of Section 242 meant that the federal government would have a part in
fighting the well–known problem of police brutality to African Americans and other minorities,

We Must Stop Police Brutality
Police brutality is an act that often goes unnoticed by the vast majority of white Americans. This is
the intentional use of "excessive force by an authority figure, which oftentimes ends with bruises,
broken bones, bloodshed, and sometimes even death" (Harmon). While law–abiding citizens worry
about protecting themselves from criminals, it has now been revealed that they must also keep an
eye on those who are supposed to protect and serve.
According to the National Police Academy, in the past year, there have been over 7,000 reports of
police misconduct; fatalities have been linked to more than 400 of these cases (Gul). Police brutality
is often triggered by disrespect towards the police officer. The most noticeable form of brutality ...

There are numerous reasons for police brutality to occur, the most common is racial discrimination.
According to the Journal of African American Studies 86% of the individuals who died in the
custody of the NYPD between the years 1994 and 2000 were African American or Hispanic
(Chaney). An example of this type of brutality is the case involving Rodney King. On March 31,
1991 Rodney King was pulled over by LA Police for speeding. The police said that King resisted
arrest and that he was either on drugs or drunk. A bystander videotaped the officers tasing, kicking,
stomping and beating King with batons. Rodney King suffered 57 blows from the batons and was
kicked 7 times. He also had 12 skull fractures, brain damage and kidney damage. The officers beat
him for about two minutes. Four of the officers were charged with excessive force and found guilty.
Officers Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell received 30 months in prison while Theodore Briseno
and Timothy Wind were in the clear. As a result, the blacks in LA were not happy with the charges
and caused riots. The LA riots lasted for six days and left 53 people dead (Chaney).

Police Brutality Of The United States Essay
The United States is facing a continuous wide spread of police brutality from the past to today. TV
Networks, newspapers/magazines, bloggers and forums are getting involved into the discussion
about police brutality. After a father bought a toy gun for his son for his birthday, his son went
outside to play and a police officer saw him with the gun not knowing it was a toy and shot him
several times. This incident occurred in Sonoma County in October 2013. Something close to that
happened in November 2014 where a Cleveland police officer killed a 12–year–old boy carrying a
toy gun. On April 12, 2015 Freddie Gray was arrested by Baltimore City police and while being
transported he allegedly fell in a coma, with injuries to his spinal cord. Use of excessive force by
police is common in black communities. Officers aren't trained effectively and they act out of fear.

Disparity and Discrimination
In today's society it is essential to understand the difference between disparity and discrimination.
There are numerous people who still believe that the world is prejudice. This paper will compare
and contrast disparity and discrimination. The paper will give examples of both and there relation to
the criminal justice system.
Disparity VS Discrimination
"The word discrimination comes from the Latin "discriminare", which means to "distinguish
between". To discriminate socially is to make a distinction between people on the basis of class or
category without regard to individual merit. Examples of social discrimination include racial,
religious, sexual, sexual orientation, disability, ethnic, height–related, and age–related ... Show more

Disparity is defined as "The condition or fact of being unequal, as in age, rank, or degree;
difference;" (Wikipedia, 2006) If a white male and a black male are arrested for the type of murder
and the white male receives the minimum time in prison but the black male receives the death
penalty, is it disparity or discrimination? If the white male was brought in and tried for the first time
and the black male was tried for the third time it would be disparity. It depends on each person's
criminal history. If it was the other way around with the black male's first offence and the white
males third, it would still be disparity.
Discrimination and disparity are sometimes perceived as the same issue. In reality discrimination is
more of people doing hate crimes because of the race. Discrimination is doing things on purpose,
such as leaving out other races because of their color. Disparity occurs when all the facts are
involved. One way that discrimination and disparity are similar occurs when statistics show that a
black family is low–income and less likely to succeed. While it is true that example is part of
disparity however, it is also a part of discrimination because they limit the race.
In conclusion, both disparity and discrimination are assumed to be the same. Many people confuse
the both because they have similar meaning. The only difference between the two

Police Brutality Against African Americans Essay
Rodney king Police brutality against African Americans was a huge impact in Los Angeles,
California in 1991, and continues to be a problematic situation in America today. On March 3, 1991,
a group of white LAPD beat Rodney King. After this incident occurred a lot of negative events
started to transpire. A lot of African Americans were angry and demanded justice. The relationship
between the LAPD and the Los Angeles community in 1991 were horrific and still continues to be
awful today. Police brutality just seems to be increasing more overtime, which means the increase in
the community not trusting the police. Police brutality can be a huge disadvantage when it comes to
community policing.
Community Policing is a value system which infuses a police department, in which the main
organizational goal is working helpfully with individual citizens, groups of citizens, and both public
and private organizations to identify and resolve issues which possibly effect the livability of
specific neighborhoods, areas, or the city as a whole. Community policing can be beneficial to
communities. Community policing can help prevent crimes from occurring. As officers get to know
a community, they also get to know what is right and wrong with it. Typically, officers remain
entitled to an area where crime happens often and as such they are left with fighting it as it is going
or after it happened. In community policing neighborhoods, the officers are able to tell what might

The website, uslegal.com, defines police brutality as:
Police brutality is a civil rights violation that occurs when a police officer acts with excessive force
by using an amount of force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary. Excessive force
by law enforcement officers is a violation of a person 's rights. Excessive force is not subject to a

Cases of brutality from people, who are supposed to protect against it, have existed even when the

Police Brutality And The Laws Of The Nation And Protect...
Police offers are surpots to uphold the laws of the nation and protect the citizens of their nation from
harm, but that is not always the case. Throughout history, the ones that are designated to protect the
public the one are harming the public. When the police abuse their power, it is not uncommon for
them just to look the other way and not charge the other office of any crime. In the United States the
defining of police brutality is the wanton use of excessive force, this could be physical, verbal
attacks and psychological intimidation, by a police officer. Often times, the victims of police
brutality are arrested for a crime, not the police officer; it is not until the citizen become aware of the

This would have just been another incident between the Los Angeles police department and an
uncooperative suspect if it were not for George Holliday. George Holiday (Holiday) was living in an
apartment near the intersection of Foothill Blvd and Osborne St. in Lake View Terrace when heard
something going on outside and got his camcorder at that time he filmed violent beating. The first
13– seconds of his videotape were blurry but it showed King trying to get away passing one of the
officers. The next minute and half, King are beaten with batons, being kicked repeatedly and even
tasered many times by the officers. He contacted the Los Angeles police two days later and told
them that he had videotaped the incident, but the LAPD did not care to see it and just ignored him.
George Holiday then took is videotaped to KTLA television so the public could see how the LAPD
burrity beat Rodney King. KTLA edited out the first 13–seconds of the videotape because it was

Jeff Koons Analysis
Jeff Koons's Easyfun–Ethereal series is a collection of seven paintings commissioned for the
Deutsche Guggenheim museum in Berlin and now on view at Gagosian gallery. The collection of
paintings later evolved into twenty–four distinctive paintings. Koons utilized many images from
magazines, combined with his compelling backgrounds and varying curves. His paintings includes
everyday objects, female clothing, and many desserts to communicate with any culture or society.
Koons's Easyfun–Ethereal series bridges the gap between sensualism, fun, and art by disguising
each painting with delicious foods, everyday objects, and women's body parts to create sexual
references. Koons makes his statement regarding his upcoming exhibition, "My Easyfun–Ethereal ...

In his piece, Bluepoles, he makes a direct reference to Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles (1952), with
blue roller–coaster poles. Koons paints an amusement park layered above a beach. The background

Cheerios replace their faces. Koons's Bluepoles was intended for his works to be fun and enjoyable,
as Jackson Pollock wanted his artwork to be enjoyable as well. Koons involves the past and present,
using digital technology to create historical references in favors of abstract expressionism and pop

Rodney King Riots of 1992
In May of 1992, Manhattan borough president and NLC Advisory Council's Liaison for Diversity in
Governance's Ruth Messinger expressed, "Violence begets violence. We must have the strength to
break this cycle" out of frustration resulting from detrimental civil rights riots stemming from the
brutal beating of an African American man (Baker). From April 29th to May 1st of 1992 protestors
throughout the Los Angeles area displayed violent actions while rioting against a racially biased
verdict. The 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles show how mob mentality can negatively
impact an entire city.
On March 3rd, 1991, African American citizen Rodney King found himself engaged in a high speed
chase with a few Los Angeles policemen. Officers Laurence Powell, Timothy Ward, Stacey Koon,
and Theodore Biseno eventually caught up to 27 year old King at Dodger Stadium, where they
proceeded to brutally beat him. Witness George Holliday filmed the four officers striking King with
their batons over 50 times, and eventually sold the footage to KTLA in Los Angeles, which would
soon find itself on news and broadcasts nationwide. This event was eventually taken to trial, where
the four police officers involved in the violence against King were not found guilty of assault with a
deadly weapon and excessive use of force. After hearing the final verdict, many people throughout
the city and beyond were enraged, with even mayor Tom Bradley saying, "Today the jury asked us
to accept the senseless and brutal beating of a helpless man" (Wallenfeldt). Not only were people
angry about the verdict of the trial because of the video evidence and obvious ethical issues, but also
because of his race and the belief that his civil rights had been violated. The outcome of Rodney
King's trial angered many Americans across the country, and eventually caused them to take actions
they normally would not.
Later, on April 29, 1992, riots began to break out in the city of Los Angeles and other areas around
the country. During the Rodney King riots, citizens began to experience deindividuation and
feelings of anonymity, making them do things that would normally go against a

the unjust trial when several officers were caught on video brutally beating Mr. Rodney King on the

After being pulled over, King's friends obeyed police commands to get out of the car and lie face
down on the ground, and they were not harmed. King, however, was reluctant to get out of the car,
and even more reluctant to obey police orders. He then made degrading gestures toward the female
CHP officer that had initiated the pursuit. As a result, the officer advanced upon him with her gun
drawn, and Stacey Koon, an LAPD sergeant, feared that there might be a shooting, so he then took
over the arrest, and ordered the other officers at the site to holster their guns.
Sergeant Koon subsequently shouted at King and told him to lie face down with his arms stretched
out. King did not listen to these commands and just stared at Koon with a glazed look in his eyes.
Koon then ordered four officers to jump on King and subdue him. One of the officers proceeded to
put his knee in King's back, in order to force his left arm behind him enabling him to handcuff King.
However, King was too big and strong, and with a quick motion, King tossed Officers Briseno and
Powell off of his back.
Koon essentially tried to immobilize King with an electric stun gun, or a taser, which fired darts
carrying a charge of 50,000 volts. These extreme actions didn't work either. After being hit two
times by the taser gun, King got up and started charging Officer Powell. By this time, Sergeant

Persuasive Essay On Police Brutality
Police brutality is the extreme misconduct against civilians by police officers by ways of ranging
from beating, sexual abuse, killing, and harassing (BRITANNICA). Although, police officers are
given jurisdiction to use discretion on their reason and use of force, some officers take advantage of
their limits and exercise excessive force. It is inappropriate and unacceptable for a uniformed police
officer to unnecessarily harm citizens (HUFF POST). Police brutality of a defenseless citizens can
lead to protests, riots, and public outrage. When tensions occur, complaints by citizens are often
never investigated due to law enforcement's desire to cover up the mistreatment and because police
brutality is difficult to prove depending on the scenario. The case of Rodney King, racial
discrimination, NFL protests, body cameras, excuses, and the September 11th terrorist attacks were
all affected by the misconduct and violence brought upon by police brutality. Rodney King was an
African–American man whose beating by the Los Angeles police officers was videotaped and
displayed to all of the United States. He was involved in a high–speed car chase when police
officers, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Stacey Koon, forcefully pulled
him from his car and violently beat him. The trial was held in Simi Valley, a primarily white
community, and obtained a jury of no African–American members (BIOGRAPHY). The jury's

Examples Of Racism In America
Racism has been a part of society throughout human history. Racism is the belief that all members
of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it

problem that can easily lead to violence and only a small percentage you actually hear about. What
was racism like back in the 1990's and what is it like now?
Racism in the 1990's Rodney King is a prime example. After a high speed chase on March 3, 1991

Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old teenage boy who is from Miami, Florida. He was a football player

Police Brutality Is Not On The Rise
Police abuse remains a significant problem and not enough reform has been made to prevent it from
occurring. Around 1000 people were killed by the police in 2015, and over 100 of them were
unarmed. The intentional use of excessive force by a person with authority, which oftentimes ends
with injuries and sometimes even death, creates a bad perception of police officers and distrust
between cops and civilians. To rebuild the relationship between people and police reform needs to
take place. Law makers need to refine the unjust criminal justice system, police officers need to
obey the fourth amendment, and the city government needs to involve the community in major
decisions.
Police brutality has existed as long as policing has been around in this country. Over the past
decade, there have been more incidents involving police brutality coming to light. Unjustified
shootings, severe beatings, fatal chokings, and excessive force have all contributed to the problem at
hand which is police brutality in America. In my opinion, police brutality is not on the rise. I believe
that the media coverage today and the more exposure of the situations makes it seem like there is an
increase. It is more likely that this brutality has always existed, sadly and these cases have been
exposed due to advances in technology. Today, everyone has a phone with a camera on it, so if there
is an incident plenty of people have the ability to document it. The following is a list of a select few

Rodney King 1992 Summary
On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was pulled over by the Los Angeles Police, which four police
officers beat him for refusing to follow the officer's instructions (Martin, 2005). These four
individuals are Sgt. Stacey C. Koon and Officers Laurence M. Powell, Theodore J. Briseno, and
Timothy E. Wind (Martin, 2005). A videographer was able to capture the event that was aired on the
KTLA news channel. It became a controversial issue that caused the LA Riot of 1992. Furthermore,
Rodney King's case demonstrated the challenges and consequences that held the media, the law
enforcement, and the public responsible for the LA Riot of 1992. These challenges were examined
by focusing how the media chronologically reported Rodney King's trial and the portrayal of the
South–Central Los Angeles citizens. In addition, it also analyzed the four officers' final verdict and
how the public responded.
First, George Holliday captured the beating of Rodney King in 1991 (Martin, 2005). He was a
bystander that recorded Rodney King which he then provided the video to the KTLA news channel.
In addition, the video was an evidence of a police misconduct. The KTLA news channel influenced
the viewers to find justice in Rodney King's case. According to Katz (2016), as a society, pop culture
crime has influenced people to perceive the stereotypes of authority versus victim. For instance,
police officers are inclined to use excessive force to an individual who had Afrocentric African
American features. These

We are always taught from a young age that if we are in trouble to find a police officer – we can
trust them, right? Wrong. Many of these so–called upholders of the law have become the offenders
themselves. The very people that are meant to protect society from harm are now the people that are
shooting, assaulting, and even killing innocent victims. Imagine not being able to walk out of your
front door without fearing for your life, with this threat coming from the so–called "protectors" of
society. That is the reality that many people have to face. That is the reality of police brutality.
In the early hours of March 3, 1991, a California taxi driver named Rodney King was involved in a
high speed chase with the police, and then apprehended and arrested. At least, that was the story
given by the police until the full story and footage of the arrest came out. King's two passengers,
Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms were thrown to the ground and kicked, stamped on, threatened, and
hit in the head, and when King exited the vehicle, he too was thrown down on the ground, just
before the footage starts. The footage shows King being tasered twice by Stacey Koon, the highest
ranking officer at the scene. King then rises to flee the attack, but collides with Officer Powell, and
is struck to the ground with Powell's baton, and is then struck several more times, joined by another
officer, with Koon ordering this violence, even though King was subdued by this point. As he tries

On March 3, 1991 an African American man named Rodney King became a posterboy for racial
tension and police brutality in America. On this day, police officers Stacey C. Koon, Laurence M.

they suspected he was driving under the influence. Mr. King then lead the officers on a 110 mph

Police officers began beating Mr. King after he got out of his car. Officers tasered, kicked, stomped

Judge John G. Davies, who handled the case, did not try to hide his sympathy for the defendants.
Davies excluded evidence of racist comments made by the officers from the trial record. He also
made several statements, saying that he too believed "the incident....would not have occurred at all,
but for Mr. King's initial misconduct." Davies elaborated on his beliefs when he stated, "Mr. King, a
paroled felon, who had fled from police and resisted arrest, bore much of the responsibility for the
beating." Judge Davies obviously had sided with the officers, describing them as "having
distinguished records of public service" even though he knew that each man had been involved in at
least one prior criminal incident. He made his loyalties even more evident when he said " Mr. King
had no 'serious injuries'. He was only hit in the head or the face once, possibly inadvertently." King's
facial injuries included a broken cheekbone, a broken orbit (eye socket), and 11 skull fractures.
When making an appearance on "L.A. Burning: 25 Years Later" Rodney King's attorney, Steve

Many people believe that Jeff Koons artwork is not considered art, however I believe that his
artworks are considered art because its his own creation and it is a new kind art that we have not
seen much of. From our lecture, Professor Brandon Vickerd talked a little about Jeff Koons, and he
stated that "Some people would look at his work as pioneering and of major art–historical

considered art as long as you make it your own, original and make it look interesting.

Examples Of Unreasonable Force
Unreasonable force by police Arrests by force is not unconstitutional, or illegal. If the manner of the
arrest was reasonable and the amount of force was reasonably necessary, then the arrest by force,
and the use of force during the arrest, is justified. The public's opinion about force is very distorted
since it focuses on unreasonable usage of force when an arrest is being made. The definition of
"unreasonable force" is one not named in Black's Law Dictionary, however it could be stated that
unreasonable force is the use of force by a police officer that a reasonable person would find
excessive under the circumstances. Black's Law Dictionary 2nd Ed.'s definition of excessive force

Police Brutality And Its Effects
Police brutality is a phenomena that is documented throughout a myriad of societies from Russia,
China, Indonesia, Palestine, Egypt to the United States. Police brutality is the use of force which
exceeds what is needed in order to accomplish a legal police purpose.Throughout America 's history,
minorities, specifically Black people, have been the disproportionate target of police brutality.
Amnesty International has documented several examples of police brutality, including instances of
beatings, unjustified shootings, and excessively forceful detention methods which merit concern
(Amnesty 1999).The pervasiveness of police shootings of citizens has been widely publicized in the
media and stresses the fact that this is a national problem. While these occurrences are relatively
infrequent the lack of any solution or way to minimize brutality has been an ongoing criticism by
citizens and others of the United States' police force. The term "excessive force" is utilized
frequently, although there is no concrete definition of this term as it is subjective (Police Use of
Excessive Force in Minority Communities). The use of force is either appropriate or excessive
depending on if the use of force is necessary and justified for the officer to complete his job (Police
Use of Excessive Force in Minority Communities). The use of deadly force is justified by law if the
officer feels he or others are under imminent threat. There are many high profile cases of the use of

Circumstances Leading to Rodney King's Beating
Question1 The 1991 Rodney King beating was one of the most significant events of the late
twentieth century when considering the tension between African Americans and white police
officers in the last two centuries. It seemed that the beating and the effect that it had on the world as
a whole embodied society's feelings concerning the idea of discrimination. The fact that Rodney
King was African American and that white police officers used unnecessary force when trying to
apprehend him made it possible for people to understand that even though the social order had
experienced important progress in recent years, the race matter continued to be divisive. A team of
the Los Angeles Police Department followed King for approximately eight miles as he was speeding
within city limits. Consequent to capturing him as a result of another crew interfering, the police
officers drew an aggressive King out of his car and the fact that he was resisting arrest influenced
them to proceed with using extreme force involving "striking him with a baton 56 times and
forcefully kicking him six times" (Rodney King beating 1). An individual who was living nearby the
scene of the event filmed most of the scene and made it possible for the whole world to see the

criticism throughout the world and influenced people to look at the racial problem from a different
perspective. While it seems perfectly

Personal Values Of Art
Art History 3.6
Values such as personal, symbolic, religious and iconic can be shown in these three major artworks,
Christian Boltanski's 2010's artwork 'Personnes', Damien Hirst's 2007's artwork 'For the Love of
God' and Jeff Koons's 1994 – 2010's artwork 'Balloon Dog/Balloon Rabbit'.
Christian Boltanski's "Personnes" reflects personal values as he believed that art raises many
questions and fulfilling emotions but there's no answer to neither of them. He assumes that death is
unpredictable, chance is watching every human life as they live on their life. His intention is to
allow each viewer to observe these compiled clothes of "mass graves" and "honouring the dead". He
created this artwork to reflect the personal values of each deceased personal experience and
"commemorate the lives of others", to leave the human trace as they moved onto the afterlife.
Personal values is reflected on each part of the artwork such as the compiled pile of clothes making
up the whole artwork itself and form them as shrines of the deceased, creating a "personal effect" on
the viewer as well as communicating with them. Personal values are also reflected on not just
clothes but other people's belongings, as reminders that there was a time when they once wore them
and show sympathy and connect with them on a deeper level, as Laura Cumming, art critic for The
Observer states; "this was an art that spoke so clearly and simply that a child could understand it and
so it is, to some extent, with

Rodney King Police Brutality

  • 1. Rodney King Police Brutality A car chase emerged in Los Angeles, California after Rodney King, along with two other passengers, refused to be pulled over by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) who were attempting to initiate a traffic stop. King feared being pulled over would put him at risk, for he had been drinking and was on parole, but ultimately decided it was the only thing he could do. Once his vehicle came to a halt and him and the two passengers exited, he was targeted by members of the Los Angeles Police Department and became a victim of police brutality. George Holliday, who resided at the apartments across the street from the scene, managed to film footage that depicted Mr. King undergoing aggressive and ultimately unnecessary physical punishment by various members of the LAPD. The aggressors which attacked King were ultimately acquitted, leading to outrage and destruction in the city of Los Angeles, widely known as the Rodney King Riots (npr.org). On the night of March 3rd, 1991, the CHP began tailing Mr. King, however since he had alcohol in his system, and he was aware it was a clear violation of his parole, he attempted to flee and it resulted in a high–speed pursuit. "I had a job to go to that Monday, and I knew I was on parole, and I knew I wasn't supposed to be drinking, and I'm like 'Oh, my God,'" he told CNN. "He realized he could not outrun the police, [so] he looked for a public place to stop. 'I saw all those apartments over there, so I said, "I'm gonna stop right there,"' he ... • 3. My Family At Paris France Image Analysis When I was in 6th grade my family went on a trip to Paris France. While there we were able to explore the city and visit many well–known places such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and a royal palace called Versailles. The Versailles was originally built by a Louis XIII in 1623 as a hunting lodge. In the years to come the building went through a few big expansions. After Louis XIII died his son Louis XIV obtained Versailles and used it as his main residence and for the seat of the government of the Kingdom of France. Also, the Versailles had enough rooms to be used for most of the courtiers to stay there. My family and I were able to take a tour of the palace. While I was on the tour we came into a room known as the Hercules Room. I walked in the room as was shocked because of a sculpture in the middle of the room. Displayed in the middle of this room in an immaculate ancient palace was an enormous metal sculpture of a dog shaped balloon animal. Directly above the dog was a massive painting covering the ceiling named Apotheosis of Hercules which was the reason the room itself was named Hercules Room. The reason I was surprised when I walked into the room was because the dog balloon sculpture was extremely different than the ceiling above it and everything surrounding it making it seem out of place. The Balloon Dog sculpture was created by a man named Jeff Koons in 1994. The dog is an optimistic piece, it's similar to a balloon a clown would make for a child at a ... • 5. Los Angeles Riots Case Study Introduction In this new decade where political correctness trumps common sense, civil unrest often leads to violent unrest. Los Angeles Riots On March 3, 1991, Rodney King, an African American taxi driver on parole for a robbery conviction, led two California Highway Patrol Officers, Tim and Melanie Singer (husband and wife) on a high speed chase on the freeway in Los Angeles, California. He had been drinking King refused to pull over and reached high speeds. He later said that this was because he didn't want to get in trouble for violating his parole. During the chase, King drove at speeds from 55 to 88 miles per hour and several police cars and a helicopter joined the pursuit. Rodney King was cornered, along with his two passengers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the year after the beating of Rodney King, over 100,000 local jobs disappeared. The Latino and Black communities suffered greatly with a joint unemployment rate of thirteen percent and 29.7 percent in poverty. Many businesses pulled out of the Los Angeles area because of the riots. Los Angeles is still showing the effects of the riots today with sixty–six percent of Black men and sixty– eight percent of Black women facing unemployment. "In the ten years after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, for example, the city lost nearly four billion dollars in taxable sales, according to research conducted by Victor Matheson of College of the Holy Cross and Robert Baade of Lake Forest ... • 7. Essay On Police Brutality Police brutality is a dangerous and heinous problem that is happening in America today. Demoralizing citizens rather than doing what they were hired to do which is protecting the citizens of this country. Police brutality has become a limelight to the media which affects our viewpoint of policing today. Police have gone out of their way to act unethically, which has led the reputation of their department to go down. Many people today now have the bad connotation of police officers. In this paper, I will be pointing out the issues of police brutality and the reasons behind it. Police brutality is "the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose." Police work is very stressful and often puts them in violent and dangerous situations. Death is something that police must avoid probably every day, "on average, 64 police officers per year were killed by criminals between 1980 and 2014, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations." (Roufa, 2017) Having to deal with these situations can take a toll on the police office and change their viewpoint on society itself. The toll can be so bad that they can commit suicide, "somewhere between 120 and 150 police officers commit suicide each year, at a rate of about 17 suicides per 100,000 officers, 1.5 times higher than the rate of the general population and nearly triple the number of officers killed by criminals each year." (Roufa, 2017) Often police find it hard to see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Plagiarism : A Fine Line Between Inspiration And Plagiarism When it comes to artist's muses there is a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism. If one tries to define the areas where art starts plagiarizing a body of work, they will most likely end up fighting in circles. It is difficult to constitute where plagiarizing begins and inspiration ends. Artists have been including copyrighted or trademarked work into their own pieces and then calling it their own for decades, possibly even longer. Nowadays artists from all ends of the world are basing their work around preexisting pieces or are using the likenesses surrounding them. This doesn't rest in the art world either. Just recently in the news, there was a report that a successful lawsuit was brought against Robin Thicke for his hit song "Blurred Lines." Marvin Gaye's estate brought a lawsuit against Thicke for ripping off Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up." The ruling was in favor of Gaye, resulting in Thicke owing $7.3 million to Gaye's family in damages (Grow, Kory). This case and other cases have light shed on them from the media and then public debates ensue about which party is in the right. Society has an array of opinions when it comes to copyright, fair use, and appropriation. Many people do not understand the specifics about copyright laws nor do they comprehend how one can truly break these laws fully. More often than not, people are familiar with at least the phrases copyright, appropriation and fair use. But the legitimate points are fairly skewed by the public. ... • 11. Puppy Jeff Koon Analysis The material artists use for their artwork can influence the overall message of the piece. Jeff Koon works with a few different types of mediums which influence the image of the work. His piece Puppy, is a large sculpture of a dog in front of a building. The skeleton of this piece is made of stainless steel and is filled worth soil. The entire sculpture is covered with live flowering plants. I really liked this piece because the artist is using a living medium to create his work. This gives the dog a sense of being alive. In addition to this the medium used in this piece is very unexpected. Most sculptures are made of clay, metal, wood, etc. yet Koon used flowers which is out of the ordinary. Another sculpture by Koon is named Balloon Dog. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Rodney King Research Paper On March 2, 1991 Rodney King and two of his friends sat in the car in Altadena, California drinking malt liquor for many hours before deciding to take a drive. California Highway Patrol officers spotted King driving at a high speed estimated to be above 100 m.p.h. With lights and sirens on the officers began to follow King. They ordered him to pull over via the loudspeaker, but King did not follow the order and continued to drive. After King did not pull over, the officers called for help. The units of the Los Angeles Police Department joined in the pursuit. Petitioner Laurence Powell and his trainee, Timothy Wind were two officers that joined the pursuit. King finally left the highway after being chased for about eight miles. He stopped at the entrance of a recreation area. The officers ordered King and his passengers to get out of the car and lie on the floor with their hands behind their back. The two passengers followed the order, but King wasn't as cooperative. Officers Stacey Koon, Ted Briseno and Roland Solano all began to approach King. Koon is a sergeant, so he naturally took charge. The officers ordered King to assume the felony prone position for the second time. King dropped to his hands and knees, but would not get in felony prone position. King resisted and started to fight back, so the officers took steps back and fired taser darts. The next part to occur was recorded by a bystander. The video first shows King rising from the ground and charging toward officer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Research Paper On Police Brutality Introduction Police officers, who were once referred to as peace keepers, are now more law enforcement officers. Police agencies around the United States seem to be stuck more on quotas and creating revenue for their county or city. Making many officers strive for many unnecessary arrests. Which as a following result has brought up a lot of tension between the police and their citizens. With increasing violence in cities and states; police officers methods have slowly become more aggressive, bringing a rise in unnecessary police brutality related incidents within the last 10 years. In many countries there are laws which are protecting against police brutality. Under these laws, police brutality is seen as a very serious offense and is investigated by district attorneys. Unfortunately, even with the law covering police brutality, many complaints made by civilians about excessive use of force are not investigated. Researchers suggest that it happens because the police has the authority to use force when necessary, and, often, it is difficult to prove that police brutality has taken place. More police officers now constantly record all interactions with civilians. Later on the recorded conversations can be reviewed in the case of an investigation. Summary So what exactly causes police officers to engage in some type of brutality? There are three main reasons that can break down why this is. It can either be a sociological, psychological, and/ or an organizational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Rodney King Research Paper March 3rd, 1991. A day that has lived on in infamy for more than 20 years. Rodney King was just a normal 25–year old guy who had a family, a job, people who loved him. He had work the next day, so he decided to pop open some beers with one of his friends. According to King, around the time of 20th anniversary of the LA riots, "I know drinking and driving is not OK, and I shouldn't have been back then, and there's no excuse for it. But I had a job to go to that Monday, and so I went over to a friend's house and popped a couple of beers. We were just sitting around awhile, and I decided to go to a spot where my dad used to take us fishing called Hansen Dam in California." (Martin 3) King then said he saw the patrol car behind him and for no apparent reason at all did not pull over on the side of the road, as people are supposed to do with cops. He finally pulled over and got out, and the cops tasered him with 50,000 volts. Three officers then started to beat the crap out of King, hitting him in the head, neck, kidneys, and legs, over 50 times. The beating was recorded by a passerby, and sent out to every major news outlet in the country. However, this is only part of the context surrounding the case of the Rodney King beating. Here are the rest of the facts. Rodney King had been arrested twice before this, for differing offenses. While this does not excuse the cops' behaviors, it does help to see every side and fact of the story to understand the whole better, as opposed to just what the media portrayed. The first offense that King was arrested for was beating his wife in her sleep on the night of July 27, 1987, and dragging her outside to beat her more severely. He was charged with battery, and he entered a plea of "nolo contendre," which basically means he did not plead guilty, but he accepted the facts as they were presented by the prosecution. He was then put on probation. Then, more then 2 years later, on November 3, 1989, King was arrested again for wielding a tire iron against a store clerk, and robbing the store of $200. He was charged with second–degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. King pleaded guilty to the robbery charge and was sentenced to two years in prison, but was paroled on ... • 21. Modern Art : Traditional Art Then And Now Traditional Art then and now When thinking of traditional art I tend to imagine the grandiose oil paintings or gestural sculptures of figures displayed in the various national galleries I have visited, this to me, is what I think of being 'traditional' in terms of art. A more general description of traditional art is; "Art that is a part of the culture of a group of people, skills and knowledge of which are passed down through generations from master craftsmen to apprentices." (www.yourdictonary.com, 14/11/2017). whereas I do to a extent agree with this statement, I am however conscious that in the current day the term 'traditional art' is used in opposition with digital art. So therefore in the digital era traditional art can be seen as an art form that is created with a physical and tangible medium, usually painting or sculpture, as opposed to art created using digital means. Art has been around since the dawn of man, as a form of expression, a way to make sense of the world. From the primitive animal paintings in caves to the beautifully intricate and highly skilled oil paintings by artist like Titian and Rembrandt during the high Renaissance. Oil paintings have always had a tangibility to them, they exist in the world as a physical object, one that is displayed usually with great intention. In galleries they are held in high esteem as objects of value and prestige. Nonetheless traditionally art was usually in generality displayed two different types of places, ... The federal government prosecuted the police officers after the State of Georgia refused to do so. M. Claude Screws was Sheriff of Baker County, Georgia. Screws knew the victim well, they had been in confrontation over a pistol seized from the victim Robert Hall. On January 29, 1943 Screws had two officers arrest Hall on charges of stealing a tire. The three men drove Hall to the town square and beat him with their fists and a two pound blackjack in front of the courthouse. They did it in plain sight, as residents watched from their homes. The State of Georgia failed to bring charges on the three men, Screws and the other two officers even though repeated suits by the federal government were placed, "a jury in Albany, Georgia, convicted all three defendants of violating Section 242, rejecting the officers' claim that the beating had been justified in self–defense."(Watford, 2014) Section 242 was too vague and could not be used to trial because the defendants argued they were not sure which rights it protected. There was a debate between the Supreme Court Justices if the vagueness of Section 242 would lead to a mistrial. The Court's formation of Section 242 had introduced a "radical revolution" in the balance of power between the National Government and the States. Justice Frankfurter argued that, "because the defendants violated Georgia law by committing murder, this was a purely local crime–enforcement matter that had always been left to the domain of the States"(Watford, 2014) The federal government were now going to be able to make all lawless acts by any police officer a federal crime and Section 242 had survived. This is the intentional use of "excessive force by an authority figure, which oftentimes ends with bruises, broken bones, bloodshed, and sometimes even death" (Harmon). While law–abiding citizens worry about protecting themselves from criminals, it has now been revealed that they must also keep an eye on those who are supposed to protect and serve. According to the National Police Academy, in the past year, there have been over 7,000 reports of police misconduct; fatalities have been linked to more than 400 of these cases (Gul). An example of this type of brutality is the case involving Rodney King. On March 31, 1991 Rodney King was pulled over by LA Police for speeding. The police said that King resisted arrest and that he was either on drugs or drunk. A bystander videotaped the officers tasing, kicking, stomping and beating King with batons. Rodney King suffered 57 blows from the batons and was kicked 7 times. He also had 12 skull fractures, brain damage and kidney damage. The officers beat him for about two minutes. Four of the officers were charged with excessive force and found guilty. Officers Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell received 30 months in prison while Theodore Briseno and Timothy Wind were in the clear. As a result, the blacks in LA were not happy with the charges and caused riots. The LA riots lasted for six days and left 53 people dead (Chaney). Disparity VS Discrimination "The word discrimination comes from the Latin "discriminare", which means to "distinguish between". Disparity is defined as "The condition or fact of being unequal, as in age, rank, or degree; difference;" (Wikipedia, 2006) If a white male and a black male are arrested for the type of murder and the white male receives the minimum time in prison but the black male receives the death penalty, is it disparity or discrimination? If the white male was brought in and tried for the first time and the black male was tried for the third time it would be disparity. It depends on each person's criminal history. If it was the other way around with the black male's first offence and the white males third, it would still be disparity. Discrimination and disparity are sometimes perceived as the same issue. In reality discrimination is more of people doing hate crimes because of the race. Discrimination is doing things on purpose, such as leaving out other races because of their color. Disparity occurs when all the facts are involved. One way that discrimination and disparity are similar occurs when statistics show that a black family is low–income and less likely to succeed. We must have the strength to break this cycle" out of frustration resulting from detrimental civil rights riots stemming from the brutal beating of an African American man (Baker). From April 29th to May 1st of 1992 protestors throughout the Los Angeles area displayed violent actions while rioting against a racially biased verdict. The 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles show how mob mentality can negatively impact an entire city. On March 3rd, 1991, African American citizen Rodney King found himself engaged in a high speed chase with a few Los Angeles policemen. Officers Laurence Powell, Timothy Ward, Stacey Koon, and Theodore Biseno eventually caught up to 27 year old King at Dodger Stadium, where they proceeded to brutally beat him. Witness George Holliday filmed the four officers striking King with their batons over 50 times, and eventually sold the footage to KTLA in Los Angeles, which would soon find itself on news and broadcasts nationwide. This event was eventually taken to trial, where the four police officers involved in the violence against King were not found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and excessive use of force. After hearing the final verdict, many people throughout the city and beyond were enraged, with even mayor Tom Bradley saying, "Today the jury asked us to accept the senseless and brutal beating of a helpless man" (Wallenfeldt). Not only were people angry about the verdict of the trial because of the video evidence and obvious ethical issues, but also because of his race and the belief that his civil rights had been violated. The outcome of Rodney King's trial angered many Americans across the country, and eventually caused them to take actions they normally would not. He was involved in a high–speed car chase when police officers, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Stacey Koon, forcefully pulled him from his car and violently beat him. The trial was held in Simi Valley, a primarily white community, and obtained a jury of no African–American members (BIOGRAPHY). The jury's decision was to acquit the officers which activated the ... • 55. Examples Of Racism In America Racism has been a part of society throughout human history. Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism in America has always been a serious problem that can easily lead to violence and only a small percentage you actually hear about. What was racism like back in the 1990's and what is it like now? Racism in the 1990's Rodney King is a prime example. After a high speed chase on March 3, 1991 they caught Rodney King. The officers Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno and Stacey Koon pulled him out of the car and beat him viciously. These four L.A.P.D. officers involved were accused ... On February 26th, George Zimmerman saw Trayvon and assumed he was dangerous only because he was young black man who had a hood on. • 57. Police Brutality Is Not On The Rise Police abuse remains a significant problem and not enough reform has been made to prevent it from occurring. Around 1000 people were killed by the police in 2015, and over 100 of them were unarmed. The intentional use of excessive force by a person with authority, which oftentimes ends with injuries and sometimes even death, creates a bad perception of police officers and distrust between cops and civilians. To rebuild the relationship between people and police reform needs to take place. Law makers need to refine the unjust criminal justice system, police officers need to obey the fourth amendment, and the city government needs to involve the community in major decisions. Police brutality has existed as long as policing has been around in this country. Over the past decade, there have been more incidents involving police brutality coming to light. Unjustified shootings, severe beatings, fatal chokings, and excessive force have all contributed to the problem at hand which is police brutality in America. In my opinion, police brutality is not on the rise. I believe that the media coverage today and the more exposure of the situations makes it seem like there is an increase. It is more likely that this brutality has always existed, sadly and these cases have been exposed due to advances in technology. Today, everyone has a phone with a camera on it, so if there is an incident plenty of people have the ability to document it. The following is a list of a select few of events ... • 59. Rodney King 1992 Summary On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was pulled over by the Los Angeles Police, which four police officers beat him for refusing to follow the officer's instructions (Martin, 2005). These four individuals are Sgt. Stacey C. Koon and Officers Laurence M. Powell, Theodore J. Briseno, and Timothy E. Wind (Martin, 2005). A videographer was able to capture the event that was aired on the KTLA news channel. It became a controversial issue that caused the LA Riot of 1992. Furthermore, Rodney King's case demonstrated the challenges and consequences that held the media, the law enforcement, and the public responsible for the LA Riot of 1992. These challenges were examined by focusing how the media chronologically reported Rodney King's trial and the portrayal of the South–Central Los Angeles citizens. In addition, it also analyzed the four officers' final verdict and how the public responded. First, George Holliday captured the beating of Rodney King in 1991 (Martin, 2005). He was a bystander that recorded Rodney King which he then provided the video to the KTLA news channel. In addition, the video was an evidence of a police misconduct. The KTLA news channel influenced the viewers to find justice in Rodney King's case. According to Katz (2016), as a society, pop culture crime has influenced people to perceive the stereotypes of authority versus victim. For instance, police officers are inclined to use excessive force to an individual who had Afrocentric African American features. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Persuasive Essay On Police Brutality We are always taught from a young age that if we are in trouble to find a police officer – we can trust them, right? Wrong. Many of these so–called upholders of the law have become the offenders themselves. The very people that are meant to protect society from harm are now the people that are shooting, assaulting, and even killing innocent victims. Imagine not being able to walk out of your front door without fearing for your life, with this threat coming from the so–called "protectors" of society. That is the reality that many people have to face. That is the reality of police brutality. In the early hours of March 3, 1991, a California taxi driver named Rodney King was involved in a high speed chase with the police, and then apprehended and arrested. At least, that was the story given by the police until the full story and footage of the arrest came out. King's two passengers, Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms were thrown to the ground and kicked, stamped on, threatened, and hit in the head, and when King exited the vehicle, he too was thrown down on the ground, just before the footage starts. The footage shows King being tasered twice by Stacey Koon, the highest ranking officer at the scene. King then rises to flee the attack, but collides with Officer Powell, and is struck to the ground with Powell's baton, and is then struck several more times, joined by another officer, with Koon ordering this violence, even though King was subdued by this point. • 63. Rodney King Research Paper On March 3, 1991 an African American man named Rodney King became a posterboy for racial tension and police brutality in America. On this day, police officers Stacey C. Koon, Laurence M. Powell, Timothy E. Wind, and Theodore J. Briseno attempted to pull Rodney King over because they suspected he was driving under the influence. Mr. King then lead the officers on a 110 mph chase through San Fernando Valley, California, and finally stopped his car in a residential area. Police officers began beating Mr. King after he got out of his car. Officers tasered, kicked, stomped on, and hit Mr. King with their batons for about 10 minutes. THe whole police encounter was filmed by a nearby resident named George Holliday. After the police were put on trial, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Judge John G. Davies, who handled the case, did not try to hide his sympathy for the defendants. Davies excluded evidence of racist comments made by the officers from the trial record. He also made several statements, saying that he too believed "the incident....would not have occurred at all, but for Mr. King's initial misconduct." Davies elaborated on his beliefs when he stated, "Mr. King, a paroled felon, who had fled from police and resisted arrest, bore much of the responsibility for the beating." Judge Davies obviously had sided with the officers, describing them as "having distinguished records of public service" even though he knew that each man had been involved in at least one prior criminal incident. He made his loyalties even more evident when he said " Mr. King had no 'serious injuries'. He was only hit in the head or the face once, possibly inadvertently." King's facial injuries included a broken cheekbone, a broken orbit (eye socket), and 11 skull fractures. When making an appearance on "L.A. Burning: 25 Years Later" Rodney King's attorney, Steve Lerman, told interviewers that "the injuries of Rodney King's skull caused massive brain damage." When I was looking at Jeff Koons artworks, I thought back to our tutorial discussions/debates where we were arguing back and forth about what is art and what is not art. Many people believe that Jeff Koons artwork is not considered art, however I believe that his artworks are considered art because its his own creation and it is a new kind art that we have not seen much of. From our lecture, Professor Brandon Vickerd talked a little about Jeff Koons, and he stated that "Some people would look at his work as pioneering and of major art–historical importance, while others view his work as kitsch: crass and based on cynical self–merchandising." (Taken from PowerPoint). By researching this artist, I found that basically anything could be considered art as long as you make it your own, original and make it look interesting. • 68. Examples Of Unreasonable Force Unreasonable force by police Arrests by force is not unconstitutional, or illegal. If the manner of the arrest was reasonable and the amount of force was reasonably necessary, then the arrest by force, and the use of force during the arrest, is justified. The public's opinion about force is very distorted since it focuses on unreasonable usage of force when an arrest is being made. The definition of "unreasonable force" is one not named in Black's Law Dictionary, however it could be stated that unreasonable force is the use of force by a police officer that a reasonable person would find excessive under the circumstances. The first five LAPD officers to arrive at the scene were Stacey Koon, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Rolando Solano. After that, King came out of the car, and acted bizarrely. The famous Holliday video shows King getting tazered for the second time by officer Koon. Powell then hit King with his baton, and when King fell to the ground, Powell struck him multiple times with his baton. Briseno then stopped Powell from hitting King again. After that, King rose again, and was beaten once more by Powell, only now with the assistance of Wind, with batons. King then stood up once more, to which Koon ordered to hit him with "power strokes", and after that to "hit his joints, hit his wrists, hit his elbows, hit his knees, hit his ankles." Unequal treatment on the basis of race have been an ongoing issue for police since the 1960's civil rights movement. It became apparent that through the course of the past 40 years, many critics, scholars, and policy makers would begin to question discretionary powers of law enforcement officers in regards to brutality. As citizens we put our trust in law enforcement officers to do the right thing by upholding and abiding by the same laws they enforce to maintain order and keep peace within our society. Public servants, especially law enforcement officers, are obligated to live up to a higher ethical and intellectual standard than those expected of the general public, which is why there is growing concern about brutality, excessive use of force, discrimination, and racial profiling by those who are sworn to serve and ... • 74. Police Brutality And Its Effects Police brutality is a phenomena that is documented throughout a myriad of societies from Russia, China, Indonesia, Palestine, Egypt to the United States. Police brutality is the use of force which exceeds what is needed in order to accomplish a legal police purpose.Throughout America 's history, minorities, specifically Black people, have been the disproportionate target of police brutality. Amnesty International has documented several examples of police brutality, including instances of beatings, unjustified shootings, and excessively forceful detention methods which merit concern (Amnesty 1999).The pervasiveness of police shootings of citizens has been widely publicized in the media and stresses the fact that this is a national problem. While these occurrences are relatively infrequent the lack of any solution or way to minimize brutality has been an ongoing criticism by citizens and others of the United States' police force. The term "excessive force" is utilized frequently, although there is no concrete definition of this term as it is subjective (Police Use of Excessive Force in Minority Communities). The use of force is either appropriate or excessive depending on if the use of force is necessary and justified for the officer to complete his job (Police Use of Excessive Force in Minority Communities). The use of deadly force is justified by law if the officer feels he or others are under imminent threat. There are many high profile cases of the use of excessive and ... • 76. Circumstances Leading to Rodney King's Beating Question1 The 1991 Rodney King beating was one of the most significant events of the late twentieth century when considering the tension between African Americans and white police officers in the last two centuries. It seemed that the beating and the effect that it had on the world as a whole embodied society's feelings concerning the idea of discrimination. The fact that Rodney King was African American and that white police officers used unnecessary force when trying to apprehend him made it possible for people to understand that even though the social order had experienced important progress in recent years, the race matter continued to be divisive. A team of the Los Angeles Police Department followed King for approximately eight miles as he was speeding within city limits. Consequent to capturing him as a result of another crew interfering, the police officers drew an aggressive King out of his car and the fact that he was resisting arrest influenced them to proceed with using extreme force involving "striking him with a baton 56 times and forcefully kicking him six times" (Rodney King beating 1). An individual who was living nearby the scene of the event filmed most of the scene and made it possible for the whole world to see the length to which the officers were willing to go in order to prove their point. This generated mass criticism throughout the world and influenced people to look at the racial problem from a different perspective. While it seems perfectly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Personal Values Of Art Art History 3.6 Values such as personal, symbolic, religious and iconic can be shown in these three major artworks, Christian Boltanski's 2010's artwork 'Personnes', Damien Hirst's 2007's artwork 'For the Love of God' and Jeff Koons's 1994 – 2010's artwork 'Balloon Dog/Balloon Rabbit'. Christian Boltanski's "Personnes" reflects personal values as he believed that art raises many questions and fulfilling emotions but there's no answer to neither of them. He assumes that death is unpredictable, chance is watching every human life as they live on their life. His intention is to allow each viewer to observe these compiled clothes of "mass graves" and "honouring the dead". He created this artwork to reflect the personal values of each deceased personal experience and "commemorate the lives of others", to leave the human trace as they moved onto the afterlife. Personal values is reflected on each part of the artwork such as the compiled pile of clothes making up the whole artwork itself and form them as shrines of the deceased, creating a "personal effect" on the viewer as well as communicating with them. Personal values are also reflected on not just clothes but other people's belongings, as reminders that there was a time when they once wore them and show sympathy and connect with them on a deeper level, as Laura Cumming, art critic for The Observer states; "this was an art that spoke so clearly and simply that a child could understand it and so it is, to some extent, with ...
