•My magazine front cover challenges real media products
such as a music magazine of the same genre as
mine, which is grime. It challenges it because grime comes
from the streets of London, where there is gangs, etc.
Grime magazines potentially could show slightly “thuggish”
music artists, and my front cover shows someone holding
up some sort of hand sign, which can be similar to a gang
hand sign. This pose was done purposely to show this.

•The cover lines were put there purposely to capture the
interest of the audience, for example the cover line
“J.E.R.K. Giving tips of the freshest “Swag”!” was put on
the front cover because it is known that a majority of youths
in London are interested in swag, which is how they were
clothes, the latest fashion ideals that are around like
shambalas, which is why I had cover artist wearing one on
her wrist.

•I chose my colour scheme purposely, Black, White and
Blue. I think that my magazine title corresponds with it’s
blue colour, because the title is Upside, and what’s up? The
sky. The sky is blue, so blue was a suitable colour for me to
use. The black and white can represent light and darkness.
The kind of background which grime music comes from is
more negative than positive, but this shows positivity
coming from that darkness, the “Upside”. That’s also why I
chose the magazine name to be Upside. I chose the
Red/Pink colour for the cover artist part of the front cover
because it stands out from the colour scheme, which can
draw the attention of the audience to it.
•In my contents page it continued to use the colour
scheme that I used on the front cover. I did this to
keep consistency of the colour scheme. I made the
features section of the contents red purposely to
match with the Marylae cover line on the front
cover. This stands out as the featured area
because it also stands out from the colour scheme.
I chose red in particular because it’s the opposite
of blue.

•I chose to use the contents lines the way I did, so
that the most interesting topics would be on the
contents, for example Dameo’s corner one, Was
taken from the YouTube video’s of “Poets Corner”
and the vlogger on YouTube called “Ayyonline”.
These are real things that youth watch and are
interested in, and the Blackberry hype which is
extremely popular with the youths of London. The
SZTV one was meant to be like SBTV, which is the
UK's leading online youth broadcaster on YouTube.

•I used the images in the contents purposely
because of the visual appeal of them. The graffiti in
the background in the picture of my cover artist
“Marylae”, can show that she is used to street life,
but the kind of graffiti it is isn’t the “gangster” kind,
but the positive kind. The play, pause, fast-forward
buttons etc can represent her musical career. The
other two pictures, the girl one was for visual
appeal, for how good the picture looked, and same
with the boy’s one, and the car in the background
to show some sort of wealth the artist has.
I’ve kept the colours black, white and blue in the double page spread, but I've added more colours to put a bit of
difference and excitement in the article. I let the main text be black and white, and alternate between the question
be black and the answer be white, and vice versa. I’ve used two quotes, the first one at the top under the title
Marylae, which was meant to hint the audience into her greatness as a grime mc. The second quote in the blue
text is on the bottom left of the page, which is meant to be an inspirational quote to the audience.
•My magazine can represent a youth social group.
The grime genre is more popular among the youths
of London, the “rebellious” kind. But the magazine
represents the positivity that can come out of the
stereotype society sees the youth of London as. It
reveals the goodness that can come out of that
negativity from some of the youth of London.

•There are successful artists that are widely known in
London, across the UK and even Internationally.
Some of them coming from the negative
stereotypical background of youths in London.
The kind of media
institution that would sell
my product would be the
music industry. It would
allow the magazine to be
sold in a newsagent. A
company that might
publish my music
magazine would be
Rewind Creative Media
LTD, because they the
company involved with
the UK Grime magazine
RWD. Popular artists like
Chipmunk, Tinie Tempah
and Skepta have been on
the RWD magazine.
The audience would be people
  interested in grime, or anyone
   generally interested in music
magazines. The grime genre does
have it’s down side, it’s really
     popular among the young
 “troublemakers” in London. It’s
upside would be successful artists
who have come out of such an
    environment, and are doing
  something with their lives, like
       Wretch 32 or Bashy.
I attempted to attract my audience by using
cover lines on the front of my magazine, and
of course the music artist on the front cover
for visual appeal. I also used the cover lines to
attract the audience by making them
interesting enough for someone to want to find
out more. The first thing
they will see is the magazine cover, so I think
it needs to look good to draw in
customer attention.
From making my music magazine, I've learnt how to use internet
blogs, like slideshare and blogger, but I learnt the most from
continuously using Photoshop, being able to crop out what I want
from a photograph, and edit text to make it look better.
From the preliminary task, I've
definitely begun to understand
how music magazines look like,
what kind of things are
expected to be seen on them
and inside of them, I've learnt
how to work with a colour
scheme more effectively that I
used to. I also now understand
more about music magazines
in general, like what kind of
things are expected to be found
on and in them.
