It has been clear for sometime that we have been moving
towards an information society. We have moved from a society in
which agriculture dominated through stage II in which industry
dominated. We have now entered stage III which is driven by
information technology. This has resulted in all concerned reflecting
on the impact of the information system which forms the backbone
of the new society. The emergence of world processors, bank service
tills, personal computers, video games, video discs, ceefax, prestal
are just the very earliest and most obvious signs of a new technology
that will change our life in the near future.
The application of Information technology is expected to be
more pronounced in the HRD sector. It is a matter of concern and
curiosity that the HRD functionaries are not seen to be users of IT
to the extent expected of them. Reasons attributed to this area are as
varied as reluctance to reduce individuals to set of values; lack of
knowledge of abilities of software, belief that people cannot make
proper decisions about computers; inability to use computerized
database and spreadsheets; fear regarding secrecy ofdata and negative
attitude towards use of computers.
As we move into liberalized and globalised scenario we can
discern several important trends that are likely to interact to shape
the HR systems of tomorrow. These include- applications of software
to take better account of the psychology of the intended users, greater
possibilities of using artificial intelligence, better integration of
Services at the user system interface.
This paper focuses on issues relating to what IT can do to the
HRD sector. It also discusses ways and means of optimizing the
interaction and use of IT in HR systems.
