The Sneaky Zaroff In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard...
The Sneaky Zaroff In the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. The author
uses suspense to develop an understanding of Zaroff's true character. Connell used other techniques
like foreshadowing, cliffhangers, and imagery to develop the uncertainty of Zaroff's character. He
also uses themes like the difference between right and wrong, as well as the idea of violence to
support the suspense in the story. Connell's first method was foreshadowing the setting of the story.
He demonstrates the technique beginning a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford. Whitney,
a crew member, points out that the unknown island "'[had] a reputation––a bad one.'" (Connell 1)
The author portrays his worried emotion to predict the unwary ... Show more content on

He uses the imagery of nature to help enhance Rainsford's understanding. An instance in the story
displays Rainsford's discovery as "... the truth [being]... evident as the sun... pushed... morning mist"
(Connell 12). The author compares the sun and the wind to Rainsford's reaction and understanding
of Zaroff's lies. He describes Zaroff's persuasive lies like the fog and Rainsford's understanding like
the sun melting the misty fog. Furthermore, Rainsford displays more imagery as he describes the
ocean. He goes in description of the ocean as a "...cry...pinched off short [with]... blood–warm
waters..." (Connell 2). Connell uses an analogy to compare the bloody waters to human blood. The
imagery compares the human blood to Zaroff's obsession in hunting humans as a result of bloody
waters surrounding the

Why Is Harry Potter Popular?
Why Harry Potter is popular The Harry Potter series is a collection of books that tells about a young
boy who gets an invitation to a wizarding school where we makes friends, go on adventures, and
defeats the main villain of the whole trilogy. But why is it popular? Let's talk about that, *Cues
Good Mythical Morning intro music* . It appeals to a young audience as with the first book where
Harry is a young boy, younger audience can relate to him. He also grows up throughout the series so
the younger readers who read the first book can grow up with him through all of his adventures. The
book series is an entire plot that is separated into six books with the last one having two parts. And
finally, as the books are part of a whole story, there will be cliffhangers that keep the audience
wanting to know more, so the hype is still getting bigger. So, let's go over all of the topics I'll be
covering in this essay. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first book introduces Harry as a young boy whose parents were killed by Voldemort, he then
goes onto Hogwarts, a wizarding school. There he meets Hermione and Weastly and the become
best friends. It relates to how kids go to school for the first time and they don't know anybody but
make new friends over time, the first book reflects on that. The first book addresses Harry's first
adventure and having fun, it correlates to when kids do something for the first time and having lots
of fun. And as the original readers continue on with the story, they still relate to Harry no matter
what age they are. That is all I have to address the first book in the

Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among The Hidden
According to Scholastic, "With Found, Margaret Peterson Haddix begins a new series that promises
to be every bit as suspenseful as Among the Hidden." Found is a great book but some may think the
book is slow, making the reader bored, but Found provides suspense, plot twists, and even a
cliffhanger ending. The book Found is full of mystery and suspense. For example on page 243, one
of the main characters said, "...the one with the Pied Piper leading the children of Hamelin to their
doom. In the picture, the children were dancing to the piper's tune but Jonah knew what was going
to happen to them." He is explaining that as they were on the nature walk, all the other kids were
happy and having fun but Jonah knew that something bad was going to happen to them. This creates
suspense and makes the reader wonder what will happen next. This suspense and mystery can create
some crazy plot twists that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are other books in this series so the cliffhanger makes the reader want to read the rest of the
series. On page 314 it says, They landed. Welcome to the 15th century, JB said grimly through the
Elucidator. Good luck." This is the last part of the book that leaves the reader on edge. This is what
makes the book so good. In argument, someone might say that Found is a slow book. The book is
not slow all the way through, the first few chapters can be a little slow but I feel that most books are
like that. It does speed up after a few chapters and the book becomes very interesting. Also, little
bits of suspense is added to the first few chapters to make it more interesting so the reader will not
get bored of the book. The book Found should be your next book to read! It's full of suspense and
mystery that keeps you wondering. Although some may think it's slow, Found provides suspense,
plot twists, and a cliffhanger ending attaching the reader. Found is a great book to read, and maybe
even read the whole series

Hardy Boys Casefiles: Thick As Thieves Sparknotes
The mystery genre is filled with classic books and authors. People like Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen
Poe, and Arthur Conan Doyle introduced Mystery in the 1800s and 1900s. One of these prestigious
authors, Franklin W. Dixon, was known for his stories about two detective brothers, named Frank
and Joe Hardy. One of his numerous stories, titled The Hardy Boys Casefiles: Thick As Thieves, is
about how the two detective brothers fall into a trap that can cost them their lives. At the beginning,
Frank and Joe find their old nemesis, Charity, and follow her to San Diego. They learn that there is a
criminal meeting to plan a heist in San Diego, and Joe is misunderstood as one of the criminals.
Soon, the unknown director of the heist finds out about Joe and Frank, and tries to kill Frank. Joe
teams up with Charity, who claims to be a government agent. Frank, who is actually alive, teams up
with the director's assistant, Chavo, who is actually a Mexican agent. After a few hardships with the
criminal gang, Joe and Frank meet up at the director's base. Here they bring ... Show more content

One of the biggest features, the cliffhanger, is used many times to dramatize the situation and to
keep the reader on his or her toes. For example, on page 51 the author wrote, "With a chuckle,
Chavo pressed the silenced gun against Frank's chest. A noise that sounded like a loud sneeze
erupted twice from the gun. Frank toppled backward, hit the water, and slowly sank beneath the
waves." This quote depicts one of the main characters, Frank, dying. This cliffhanger leaves the
reader wondering what will happen to Joe now that Frank is dead. Frank's death also leads to a plot
change. Joe has to make a big decision, now that he needs all the help he can get. Joe teams up with
his enemy Charity, which, at the end of the novel, gets Charity arrested. Overall, the cliffhangers
present in this mystery book are important to the reader's mood and the story's

Zelda Elements
Have you ever read a story that is just amazing? What makes that one story so great? What elements
can you look for to find more books like this? What is your type of story? Some stories are better
than others because of suspense, cliffhangers, pace, and detail. These things contribute to getting us
more engaged in the story you can be on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next.
The first element of a story that will enhance its ability to get you engaged as a reader is suspense.
Suspense is were the reader, observer, or player gets a feeling of anxiety of wanting to know what
will happen next like "Will she survive?", "Will he propose to her?", etc. In The Legend of Zelda:
Twilight Princess, a story is played. This is a video ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be the case for some people, but most books should be normally paced. It is better than
having to reread books, re–watch movies, or even replay video games. to understand and be
engaged in the story. Some people will say the same about slowly paced stories. With normally
paced stories, authors can fit enough detail in a smaller space; therefore, it takes less time to read
books and more time to read other books or do other things. In conclusion, a story should have
detail, cliff hangers, detail, and a good pace. Some books can have different paces depending on the
amount of detail needed to engage the reader. The pace shouldn't be too slow or too fast.
Cliffhangers and suspense should be included to further engage the person. All of these things will
contribute to an amazing and engaging story that people will

Chapter 37 Leaves Us On A Gripping Cliffhanger Joseph
Genesis's Chapter 37 leaves us on a gripping cliffhanger–Joseph is sold into slavery, and Jacob
weeps for him–and instead starts to describe Judah, Joseph's brother, and his latest marriage and
children. This interjection of the Tamar Episode plays out in Chapter 38, and deals with sex, sin, and
deception. Judah has three sons, and when he marries the first one to a woman named Tamar, his son
dies because God deems him wicked. Then, Judah's second son marries Tamar, but God kills him
because he does not fulfill his duty to have kids with her as required by the law of Levirate
Marriage. Judah goes on to prevent Tamar from being able to fulfill the law of Levirate Marriage
and remain a member of Judah's household, by keeping her away from ... Show more content on

If he is truly right about this pattern of deaths, his third son will die eventually anyways when the
time comes for him to marry Tamar. If his prediction of this pattern is wrong, Shelah will die by his
own wrongdoings just as his brothers did, rather than die because of his marriage with Tamar. By
keeping her away for longer, Judah's predictable and fatherly, but selfish emotions come out when
he exiles Tamar as a widow; Judah shows how he cares less about allowing Tamar to have children
and to fulfill her duty to the law of Levirate Marriage than he cares about spending time with
Shelah. Furthermore, Judah owes his end of the bargain to give Tamar children by one of his sons
and let her remain in their family, and he inappropriately keeps her from that in hopes that he would
never have to if he waits long enough so that maybe she dies. Judah threatens Tamar's place in his
household by telling her that she must wait to marry Shelah "in [her] father's house," sending her
back to the life she was supposed to have left when marrying his son. Judah's tone is commanding
and insensitive, telling her bluntly that she must "remain a widow" rather than politely asking her to
stay away for a while, showing how Judah's desires motivate him above anything else. Through the
way Judah treats Tamar, he demonstrates that he cares very little about her as an individual, and
more about his own wants and how he can use her to achieve them.

Lamb To The Slaughter By Roald Dahl
Favorite Short Story Opinion Essay
Throughout our short story unit; we have read many short stories, but one was the best. "Lamb to
the Slaughter", a short story written by Roald Dahl was absolutely amazing and my favorite. It
included all the aspects of stories that I really like, such as suspense, a good writer's style, and cliff
hanger endings.
One thing I liked was the suspense. Suspense is a sense of anticipation somebody gets. As a reader,
the suspense kept me intrigued in the short story and I always had to keep questioning what will
happen next. An example of how dahl created suspense is, when Mary had killed her husband and
the detectives came to her house, the reader did not know what would happen. I had many questions
forming inside my head. Such as: is she going to get caught? What's wrong with her? Is she going to
get away with murder? To answer these questions, I had to keep reading and it ended up making me

Roald Dahl (the author of "Lamb to the Slaughter") created really strong images in my head. He
used a lot of literary devices, such as tone, mood and atmosphere, but Roald Dahl used mood the
best. Mood is a literary device the creates emotions, feelings, images through words and
descriptions. Throughout the story, Roald Dahl used mood very well. An example of this would be:
"for her, this was always a wonderful time of day. She knew he didn't want to speak much until the
first drink was finished, and she was satisfied to sit quietly, enjoying his company after the long
hours alone in the house" – Lamb to the Slaughter. The way Roald Dahl portrays Mary in that
paragraph sums up her thoughts and feelings towards her husband. It says that it's a wonderful time
of day just watching her husband drink. It tells us that she was so devoted to him and she loved him
so much. This created a photo in my head of Mary sitting intently waiting for her husband to finish
his drink, watching him with loving

Suspense In The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Everyone off us has stayed up all night at the edge of our bed waiting to find out what will happen
next; 83.3% of all Americans have have done this. Suspense is any time a person is craving to know
what will happen next. Authors use various elements such as cliffhanger, delayed answers ,and
many more to create suspense. Elements are important if a author wants a successful suspenseful
story. However, setting and delayed answers are necessary for the development of a successful
suspenseful story. One important element, setting is necessary for the development of a successful
suspenseful story. In The Hound of the Baskervilles Arthur Conan Doyle used the moor to create
suspense he says, " behind the peaceful and sunlit countryside the long, gloomy curve of the moor
broken by the jagged and sinister hills." Doyle uses word such as gloomy and sinister to create
suspense. They create suspense because off there meaning of evil and depression. In The ... Show

In The Hound of the Baskervilles Doyle has a question in the starting of the, how and who killed Sir
Charles. This question was delayed until the end. It was then figured during a dialogue, "Stapleton
was with me when I heard It last... No, no he was with a hound." The question of who and how Sir
Charles died is what the story is based upon, and the author doesn't reveal the answer till the end.
The delaying of questions causes the reader wanting to know the answer ,and causes suspense in the
reader. Another example is the The Monkey's Paw when the characters question if the monkey's paw
is real, the wishes will turn out to come true. They ask "Monkeys Paw? Said Mrs White curiously"
and later wonders, "Has anybody else wished a true wish." The characters and readers both shared
the feelings of mystery and curiosity. The author uses this to his advantage by not relieving the
answer till the end to build up the level of

Literary Devices Used To Create Suspense In Killing Mr....
" They only meant to scare him. When one " accident" leads to another, people begin to die. Susan a
student from Del Norte high must face the awful truth: One of them is the killer." In the novel
Killing Mr. Griffin, the author delineates a story about five teenagers who are peer pressured by
each other which leads to a series of horrendous events. Three types of literary devices that the
author used to create suspense was flashback, cliffhanger, and foreshadowing. The first main literary
device that the author used was flashback. It states on pg. 27 "It was a transformation Jeff had come
to recognize. He had seen it for the first time back in junior high school, on that day they had met

sentence from Mr. Baca was the last sentence of chapter 10, the author concludes the chapter with
yet another cliffhanger, leaving us to think that he is talking about Susan. Pg. 52 reads " Never,
Susan thought deliriously, never in all the time to come will I ever, ever be as happy as I am right
now. And she was right." This cliffhanger was also the rising action when Susan agrees to the act of
killing Mr. Griffin putting us readers into fixated thought. Lastly, on pg. 163 states " It was the most

Cliffhangers In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Yes, this was a practical device for playwrights to use in those times because it attracts audiences
and gets the play producers money they need for survival. When girls are used it makes the play
more alive and realistic. For example, in the book with the play Romeo and Juliet the whole town
was excited for the new Juliet which was rumoured to be an amazing actor. Secretly behind all of it,
Kit playing Juliet is a girl. "I heard the murmur of surprise and disappointment run around the
theatre" (p.106). This shows how everyone was so excited to come and watch the amazing
performance by a "boy" who can play the parts just like a girl, but when they realize who is playing
the part they won't be interested to come and watch again. Just like if you are going to watch a
movie, you obviously want to watch one acted well in versus one with poor acting. When everyone
get hyped up about watching the good one, they are expecting a good result. Therefore, I believe
this was a practical device for playwrights to use in those times because it attracts audiences and
gets the play producers money. The effects on the reader of a dramatic closing for the chapter is
wanting to make the engaged and hooked into the book so the reader reads ahead to see what is
going to occur. They use this technique called cliffhangers. They are in a middle of a scene that has
grabbed your attention or their could have been a plot twist. As well as they leaving you with so
many questions to answer that makes you want to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Quotes From 'The Giver'
I think the novel ended on a negative note because many quotes and evidence in the novel leaves us
in a statement and thought saying that something bad is going to happen or something bad
happened. In the novel, The Giver, it states, " The memories had fallen behind him now, escaping
from his protections to return to the people of his community." This quote means that every step
Jonas took outside of the community, the more his memories didn't belong to him anymore. They
slowly started to be in the hands of the community instead of Jonas. That action had impacted the
people in a negative way, which had created a prodigious problem.
Another mistake that Jonas made which made the plot of the story rot is that when the family was

How Does Moore Build Suspense In The Most Dangerous Game
Sage Fladry–Fosburg
1
The Most Suspense Story
In the story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, the author used suspense to make the
reader feel a sense of uneasiness as they cannot predict what will happen next. Compared to the
other stories that attempted to use suspense to, such as Cask of Amontillado and The Perfect Storm,
The Most Dangerous Game is superior to the others. To successfully convey the feeling of suspense,
the author used intensity, the appeal of the characters, and the cliffhanger ending.
The main character of the fiction, Sanger Rainsford, encounters close calls throughout the story,
increasing the intensity of the story, and increasing the suspense. There are many close calls in the
story, including but not limited to when Rainsford first opens the door to ... Show more content on

No story could convey the sense of suspense without the reader caring about the characters. In The
Perfect Storm, all but one characters are forgettable and the only one that you really get to know is
the hero Dave Moore whose introduction drags on and because of this, the reader loses interest in
the only character that gets a proper introduction. In The Cask Of Amontillado the two main
characters are flat and lack depth; Montresor is a psychopath that wants to murder someone all
because he wronged him somehow. The character Fortunato his portrayed as a fool that will blindly
follow anyone in a drunken state. While the other stories lack the appeal of the characters, The Most
Dangerous Game conveys the characters splendidly. The main character Rainsford goes through a
character arc that proves him to be a good character that deserves redemption from all the past
mistakes of his cruel hunting. Because Rainsford becomes a character that the reader can cheer for
him, the reader cares about what will happen he and therefore the author can successfully create

Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Landlady
The story, "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl, takes place in Bath, United Kingdom. In this Mystery,
the main character, Billy Weaver finds an interesting lodging that might just change his life forever.
Being too trusting is a great quality to have, but when Billy is a seventeen year old who is in a new
place, trusting might not cut it. Roald Dahl creates the theme 'Be cautious of the reader's
surroundings' by using Foreshadowing and Imagery.
In the story, "The Landlady" the central issue is that Billy Weaver, the main character, is too
trusting. Billy is in Bath, United Kingdom for a job and was trying to find a place to stay. After
finding a hotel cheaper then what he planned, he decided to stay there even though he knew nothing

This caused foreshadowing and a cliffhanger ending to become two of many craft moves Roald
Dahl used in this story. In the story, the author, Roald Dahl uses a cliffhanger ending to show one of
his many craft moves. The story quotes, "'Gregory Temple. Excuse my asking, but haven't there
been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?'" (5) The story goes on to say,
"'No, my dear', she said. 'Only you.' (5) This ending leaves the reader wondering what happened
next and if Billy ever survived. It also leaves the reader questioning about what may have happened
to Billy and if the old woman ever claimed another victim. This ending is also mysterious and
creepy, leading the reader to ponder over what they just read. The cliffhanger ending was a very
smart craft move to use, especially because it's very hard to accomplish. Another craft move that is
difficult is foreshadowing. Another craft move Dahl uses in this story is foreshadowing, which is
when the author warns the reader about an event that will happen later in the future. One event in
which foreshadowing occurs is when Billy's tea tasted like 'bitter almonds', also known as the taste
of poison, on page 5. The short story states, "'No, thank you,' Billy said. The tea tasted faintly of
bitter almonds, and he didn't much care for it." It is concerning to see that Billy thought nothing of
the taste of bitter almonds, which can be used as a form of poison. This event is foreshadowing that
Billy has been poisoned and will most likely die from it. This leaves the reader wondering why Billy
did not confront the woman and ask her about why the tea tasted like bitter

Poem Analysis: Voice
Voice
The narrator and the co host of the podcast ' How animal testing works' tone of their voices are
monotone and boring. Since the tones of the voices are un expressive it can easily be suggested that
the podcast will be uneventful to listen too. The tone is one of the most important components
during the first few minutes of the podcast to engage the audience to keep listening. From listening
to the podcast early on it's is noticeable that the speakers are off topic and unenthusiastic about the
material they are speaking and discussing about. This can be seen during the opening moments " I

The Cliffhanger In Walk Two Moons By Sharon Creech
I. Cliffhanger: a cliffhanger in literature is a device, borrowed from early serialized film, in which a
writer ends a chapter on a note of suspense, encouraging the reader to continue on to the next
chapter. What is the cliffhanger at the end of Chapter Thirty–One?
In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech the author ends Chapter Thirty–One with a
cliffhanger. The protagonist, Sal calls her friend and tells her "Phoebe, we've got to find her." and
Phoebe replies "That's what I've been telling you." (pg. 132). This is a cliffhanger because the author
stops the chapter in the middle of the conversation without the reader finding out what Sal and
Phoebe are going to do to find Phoebe's mother. II. Refrain: How does the refrain change as Sal and
her grandparents get to the Badlands? What do you predict will happen?
In the novel Walk Two Moons the author Sharon Creech uses the technique of refrain to develop the
mood of the story. This refrain: "the sound of the wind was hurry, hurry, hurry, and at night, even the
silent darkness whispered rush, rush, rush" appears for the first time on page four. She repeatedly
comes back to the sound of the wind telling her to hurry and rush throughout her journey. The
author uses this refrain to set an ominous tone as well as to create a sense of urgency. When Sal
"swept on across South Dakota toward the Badlands" the author changes the refrain "the whispers
no longer said, hurry, hurry or, rush, rush. They now said, slow down,

Why The Ending Of Dorothy Must Die

The Cliffhanger: An Analysis Of Amy Tan's Two Kinds
The cliffhanger: a reader's most hated thing a novelist does at the end of a story. When it is time for
a writer to conclude a piece of work, the author may choose to leave the audience left to ponder one
or several of questions. Those questions may have an answer based off of textual evidence, or the
reader must make an educated guess. Roland Barthes encapsulates this idea in a single quote,
"Literature is the question without the answer." A story is like a piece of art; it can be interpreted in
many different ways and depending on the reader, it provides diverse questions. In Amy Tan's short
story, Two Kinds, a mother pushes her child, Ni Kan, to be something that she isn't and it causes the
child to do rebellious things. The writer plants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She attempts to make her daughter into a "Chinese Shirley Temple" (Tan 1) and constantly puts her
daughter into rigorous tests. Ni Kan, at first, thought that if she became perfect and something that
she wasn't, her parents would love her, and she would not disappoint them. The child recalls, "I was
filled with a sense that I would soon become perfect: My mother and father would adore me. I
would be beyond reproach. I would never feel the need to sulk, or to clamor for anything" (Tan 1).
Ni Kan is filled with these false ideas, due to the pressure from her mother, of being perfect and it
leads her into a downward spiral. When she fails to meet her mother's high expectations, she begins
to call herself an "ugly girl" (Tan 2) and whenever she looked at herself in the mirror, she would
"scratch out the face" (Tan 2). Since her mother pressured her to be "picture–perfect", Ni Kan faced
the awful effects of low self–confidence and she felt worthless about herself. These specific details
provided by Tan leaves the reader to assume that it is not okay to pressure a child under no
circumstance because it will supposedly cause him or her to feel awful about

Brief Summary Of Cliffhanger
Cliffhanger
The title of the book I read was Cliffhanger. The writer of the book was Skip Press. It takes place in
modern times on a cliff by the beach. The theme of the book is "sometimes you help other people
and sometimes you need help yourself".
There were two main characters Hiro and Jake. Hiro is from Japan he is new to the USA. He has
black hair and apologizes a lot. He likes to write action stories. The other character is Jake. The
author did not describe him much but it said that he likes to rock climb.
The conflict of the story is Jake falls off a cliff because a section of the cliff broke off and he was
hanging by one leg.During the rising action, Jake is practicing rock climbing and he's asking Hiro to

Short Story: Lemony Snicket Had A Friend Who Lost Their Dog
My main character, Lemony Snicket had a friend who lost their dog. So they tried to help find their
dog. I believe that this was the conflict of my story that may have a resolution soon. When Jackie
found out their dog went missing they went around asking people if they had seen a newt. A newt in
my book means a suspicious person. So they assumed that it may have been a suspicious person that
stole their dog. So they asked people if they had seen anyone with their dog. After asking around
they got sent other people. Those other people were either friendly people or their friends. So when
they were redirected to some one else they got some leads to where dog may be. They have seen
many different people and met many people.

Catcher In The Rye Chapter 1-8 Analysis
The season 2 finale of Way Ward Pines leaves a cliffhanger so huge that left fans anxious. The
curious case of Wayward Pines season 3 is a question on everyone's minds. The executive producer,
show runners and writers decide to bring comfort to viewers. With the human population back on
"sleep mode," many wonder when they will wake up. After the fight against the Abbies, Theo and
many others continue to survive in cryogenic state. This ending produces speculations that they will
wake up. Another puzzling scene was when a newborn Abby features a much more human form
than their own. Does that mean they'll be human? Executive producer Blake Crouch says that the
ending can serve as a continuation for a third season. If the series gets a green light, then they have
enough ammo to continue, according to Entertainment Weekly. Crouch explains that the ending
shows a story that can stand alone, too. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the season finale purposely closing as a cliffhanger and an open–ending, fans are getting anxious.
Will Wayward Pines be picked up for a third season like Fox did with season 2? The network is
looking at the viewership numbers. At the moment, data shows that it did worse versus the first

For example, one type of red herring is Otis Amber. The reason why Otis Amber is a red herring is
because the clues lead to him, such as Chris, and Denton Deere's clues (grains=Oats=Otis Amber),
and Theo Theodorakis, and Doug Hoo's clues ({on=1 to=2 thee=3 for=4}= a chemical solution, and
Otis), but he is not the answer, in fact Julian R.Eastman was the answer and the clues was to keep
the reader off track from the real goal. In the story it states that Otis was a wrong answer, but the
heirs still insist Otis is the culprit, but it's actually not (Raskin 117). Another red herring is the clues
given to the heirs. The set of clues given to each and every heir don't lead to the answer they are
leading the heirs a different way, and it misleads the reader, and as it states in the book the westing
will said it was what you don't have that counts which was the will (Raskin 43). All these reasons
support the fact that there are red herrings in this book and it is required for a mystery. The story
Westing Game is a good mystery book to read since it contains suspense and red herring's which is
required in a good mystery novel. Another reason why this was considered a mystery was because
of the cliffhangers. Honestly I am wondering what has happened between the time gaps and think
the word choice of the author was limited when she was foreshadowing and she left us solving the
mystery ourselves. Well this

Examples Of Similes In Persepolis
The Iranian Revolution – a huge rebellion which, in turn, replaced over 2,500 years of a consistent
government – devastated women, children, and families caught in the crossfire. Persepolis, by
Marjane Satrapi, is a novel set in the late 1900s in Iran during the Iranian Revolution. The novel
follows the story of the author's childhood through the revolution and into the Iraq–Iran war and
tells about how these events permanently changed the author's life. Satrapi's purpose for writing
Persepolis is to entertain the reader through similes and metaphors, cliffhangers, and foreshadowing.
Marjane Satrapi wrote her novel to entertain her reader by using multiple similes and metaphors
throughout the text. When Marjane's mother and father are trying to smuggle posters in the father's
coat, he exclaims, "I'm walking like Frankenstein" (pg. 129, Persepolis). Throughout the text,

The Maze Runner Rhetorical Analysis
Grade 9 Language Arts D.I.R.T Response
The Maze Runner by James Dashner is an action, adventure, science fiction book. It is about a
teenager named Thomas, who arrives in an enclosed environment with no memory of his past. He
lives with other teenagers, all boys. Everyday, they try to figure out a way to escape the maze, and
seek freedom, but Thomas figured a way out. All of the gladers (the nickname of the people, due to
them living in a place called the glade) ran out in the maze, most of them were killed by grievers
(monsters that live in the maze), but some of them survived including Thomas. The survivors

Something I know understand is that nothing is ever given to you for free, you have to try/struggle
for it, earn it, and this book shows that message clearly.
I believe that the author did a truly amazing job writing the maze runner. The author, James
Dashner, used a lot of imagery throughout the book, while I was reading there was a movie going on
in my mind. James Dashner didn't use a ton of cliffhangers, but there were some every few chapters,
which in my opinion, it is favorable because I don't like the story to be full of cliffhangers every
chapter, but neither do I want it to have no cliffhangers. I believe that the Mazer Runner has a
couple of themes. Friendship – Friendship is important because the Gladers are united by a strong
bond they trust each other, and are friends. Freindship is necessary in life because you know you
have someone that will support you and talk to you. Persistence – Persistence is an important theme
because the Gladers would have never escaped if they gave up and didn't do their part. So no matter
how tough it gets, you should never give up, and you will be rewarded at the end. Bravery – Bravery
is a theme in the Maze Runner because Thomas is unquestionably brave, he will do anything to
protect his friends, even risk his life. This tells the reader that through all parts of life bravery is
important to make it to the next

Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Argument Essay
Did you know that Shirley Jackson wrote "The Lottery" in less than two hours? That is incredible
considering her story was so suspenseful and detailed. Shirley Jackson is the master of suspense
because she used surprising symbolism and fantastic foreshadowing in "The Lottery." She followed
those writing techniques up with a creative cliffhanger to create a story that kept the reader on the
edge of their seat.
Jackson used foreshadowing to create suspense. "Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full
of stones. . . the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the roundest stones. . . eventually
made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square. . ." ("The Lottery" P. 1 ¶2) By mentioning
these stones many different times it makes the reader wonder 'Why do the stones show up again and
again?' One might not have even realized the importance of the stones until the end of the story
because Jackson mentioned them so nonchalantly. In doing this she kept readers wondering what
will happen next.

"'It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.' (P. 11 ¶2)
Throughout the whole story, the reader wonders 'What will happen to the person who gets the black
spot?' Although there are a few hints throughout the story one can not put all the pieces together
until the end. Also, Shirley Jackson changed what one would think of when they hear the word
lottery. Usually winning the lottery would be an amazing event, but not in this story. Winning
Shirley Jackson's lottery actually means that you will be stoned. Although we know Mrs.
Hutchinson was stoned, she was alive through the whole story. Leaving the ending on a cliffhanger
and up the reader's imagination was the most suspenseful part of the whole story because no one
knew what was going to

Examples Of Irony In The Gravedigger's Handbook

things are. What was ironic about the first book that Liesel "stole"? Also, what is ironic about
Himmel Street? In the novel Liesle really wants to learn how to read. Liesel picks up this book
called The Gravedigger's Handbook. She has grown very attached to this book. What's ironic about
this book is that she was at her dead brothers "ceremony" and she found the book that fell from the
grave diggers pocket that's all about how to bury dead people . For example it says " Standing to
Liesel's left, the gravediggers were rubbing their hands together and whining about the snow and the
current digging conditions... When he walked away, after a few dozen paces, a black book fell
innocuously from his coat pocket without his knowledge" ( Zusak 23). This shows that it's ironic
because the diggers have this book about burying dead people, and they just buried Liesel's brother.

Examples Of Foreshadowing In Lather And Nothing Else
In the short story, "Lather and Nothing Else", the author Hernado Tellez uses foreshadowing and
cliffhangers to create suspense. The barber, a secret revolutionary, is forced to shave his enemy,
Captain Torres's beard, the leader of the local militia. The author uses foreshadowing to create
suspense in the story, when Captain Torres was first introduced in the story. Captain Torres was
putting his "bullet–holder where his holster was hanging."(Tellez 1) This foreshadows violence and
suggests the death of Captain Torres, by mentioning the gun. Guns imply bloodshed and that
something bad is going to happen. Not only does the reader wonder who the mystery man is, but
how the barber recognizes him. Another part where foreshadowing was used was when the barber
was shaving Captain Torres. The barber had his razor on "on that great big vein. God, it's hot!"
(Tellez 2) It's as if that vein represents whether or not Captain Torres lives. It would have been

One time when cliffhangers were used was when the Captain invited the barber to the executions of
some of his fellow rebels. The Captain had no time to rest because he had "'a lot to do this

deaths of rebels. It leaves the reader wondering what the barber's reaction will be and whether it'll
push him to kill Captain Torres. Not only will it be an execution, but it will be something "special".
Tellez used cliffhangers again at the very end of the story. Right when Captain Torres was about to
leave, he said, '"They kept saying that you would kill me.'" (Tellez 2) This shows that Captain Torres
knew that the barber was a rebel, although didn't capture or kill the barber. The whole story makes
the reader have an emotional connection to the barber. So the end of the story ends with a

Research Paper On Cliffhangers
When cliffhangers are employed they capture the audience's attention and create suspense which
makes the audience more likely to tune in again. Additional questions that I am interested in to
further my claims are how does this film device affect the viewer ratings? Is there a certain formula
used per season or can cliffhangers only be used in moderation before they frustrate the audience?
In using cliffhangers how do directors balance the script material and make an advantageous effect
on the audience without their residual frustration with loose ends? Do they lead to higher viewer
ratings than previous episodes that do not employ this technique? How psychologically do

For example viewer ratings from a show's season finale compared to the next season's premier can
show the difference in how cliffhangers hook the audience. Psychological studies as well on how

positively influence an audience this would lead to more clout to my claim. Some things I have to

How Does Daphne Du Maurier Create Suspense In The Birds
"The Birds" Essay Daphne Du Maurier maintains suspense throughout her short story "The birds"
by using different examples of literary devices such as foreshadowing, mood, and cliffhangers. She
builds up suspense by using each device a different way. First, Maurier maintains suspense by using
cliffhangers to leave readers curious. For example, Nat thinks, "' We've enough for two or three
days, not more...'" (18). The readers don't know what Nat thought would happen by that time. The
viewers are left curious on whether or not he thought it'd be over or if he thought it would get worse.
Also, Maurier states " He threw the empty packet on the fire and watched it burn... " (31). The
conflict is never resolved and the viewers are left wondering if the Hockens survive. The desire to

How Do The Authors Terrify The Reader?
What's a good book if it is not terrifying? Throughout the decades there have been different types of
authors that have created terrifying books such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's
Frankenstein. But how do the authors terrify and surprise a reader? The author surprises and terrifies
the reader by using foreshadowing, setting, and cliffhanger. This can be seen in the short story,
"August Heat" by W.F. Harvey. The author uses these types of task to surprise and terrify the reader.
W.F Harvey uses foreshadowing as a way to surprise and terrify his readers. The story starts on the
first line of "Penistone Road, Clapham, 20th August, 19–" (line 1). The author gives the readers the
year missing, which gives the reader a clue to a major event that happens in the story. The author
most likely did not include the year because he wanted the reader to figure out that the year was
suppose to be a date. The missing date at the end helps the reader determine the end. In the end it is
suggested that the narrator James will die. If James did in fact not die then he would of have made it
to the next day and the date would have been written but the date is not written, the reader can
assume that the character did die, which the narrator leave the reader to figure out. ... Show more

The Sneaky Zaroff Revealed Through Suspense and Imagery

  • 1. The Sneaky Zaroff In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard... The Sneaky Zaroff In the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. The author uses suspense to develop an understanding of Zaroff's true character. Connell used other techniques like foreshadowing, cliffhangers, and imagery to develop the uncertainty of Zaroff's character. He also uses themes like the difference between right and wrong, as well as the idea of violence to support the suspense in the story. Connell's first method was foreshadowing the setting of the story. He demonstrates the technique beginning a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford. Whitney, a crew member, points out that the unknown island "'[had] a reputation––a bad one.'" (Connell 1) The author portrays his worried emotion to predict the unwary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses the imagery of nature to help enhance Rainsford's understanding. An instance in the story displays Rainsford's discovery as "... the truth [being]... evident as the sun... pushed... morning mist" (Connell 12). The author compares the sun and the wind to Rainsford's reaction and understanding of Zaroff's lies. He describes Zaroff's persuasive lies like the fog and Rainsford's understanding like the sun melting the misty fog. Furthermore, Rainsford displays more imagery as he describes the ocean. He goes in description of the ocean as a "...cry...pinched off short [with]... blood–warm waters..." (Connell 2). Connell uses an analogy to compare the bloody waters to human blood. The imagery compares the human blood to Zaroff's obsession in hunting humans as a result of bloody waters surrounding the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first book introduces Harry as a young boy whose parents were killed by Voldemort, he then goes onto Hogwarts, a wizarding school. There he meets Hermione and Weastly and the become best friends. The first book addresses Harry's first adventure and having fun, it correlates to when kids do something for the first time and having lots of fun. • 4. Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among The Hidden According to Scholastic, "With Found, Margaret Peterson Haddix begins a new series that promises to be every bit as suspenseful as Among the Hidden." Found is a great book but some may think the book is slow, making the reader bored, but Found provides suspense, plot twists, and even a cliffhanger ending. The book Found is full of mystery and suspense. For example on page 243, one of the main characters said, "...the one with the Pied Piper leading the children of Hamelin to their doom. In the picture, the children were dancing to the piper's tune but Jonah knew what was going to happen to them." He is explaining that as they were on the nature walk, all the other kids were happy and having fun but Jonah knew that something bad was going to happen to them. This creates suspense and makes the reader wonder what will happen next. This suspense and mystery can create some crazy plot twists that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are other books in this series so the cliffhanger makes the reader want to read the rest of the series. On page 314 it says, They landed. Welcome to the 15th century, JB said grimly through the Elucidator. Good luck." This is the last part of the book that leaves the reader on edge. This is what makes the book so good. In argument, someone might say that Found is a slow book. The book is not slow all the way through, the first few chapters can be a little slow but I feel that most books are like that. It does speed up after a few chapters and the book becomes very interesting. Also, little bits of suspense is added to the first few chapters to make it more interesting so the reader will not get bored of the book. The book Found should be your next book to read! It's full of suspense and mystery that keeps you wondering. Although some may think it's slow, Found provides suspense, plot twists, and a cliffhanger ending attaching the reader. • 5. Hardy Boys Casefiles: Thick As Thieves Sparknotes The mystery genre is filled with classic books and authors. People like Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe, and Arthur Conan Doyle introduced Mystery in the 1800s and 1900s. One of these prestigious authors, Franklin W. Dixon, was known for his stories about two detective brothers, named Frank and Joe Hardy. One of his numerous stories, titled The Hardy Boys Casefiles: Thick As Thieves, is about how the two detective brothers fall into a trap that can cost them their lives. At the beginning, Frank and Joe find their old nemesis, Charity, and follow her to San Diego. They learn that there is a criminal meeting to plan a heist in San Diego, and Joe is misunderstood as one of the criminals. Soon, the unknown director of the heist finds out about Joe and Frank, and tries to kill Frank. Joe teams up with Charity, who claims to be a government agent. One of the biggest features, the cliffhanger, is used many times to dramatize the situation and to keep the reader on his or her toes. For example, on page 51 the author wrote, "With a chuckle, Chavo pressed the silenced gun against Frank's chest. A noise that sounded like a loud sneeze erupted twice from the gun. Frank toppled backward, hit the water, and slowly sank beneath the waves." This quote depicts one of the main characters, Frank, dying. This cliffhanger leaves the reader wondering what will happen to Joe now that Frank is dead. Frank's death also leads to a plot change. Joe has to make a big decision, now that he needs all the help he can get. Joe teams up with his enemy Charity, which, at the end of the novel, gets Charity arrested. Some stories are better than others because of suspense, cliffhangers, pace, and detail. These things contribute to getting us more engaged in the story you can be on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next. It is better than having to reread books, re–watch movies, or even replay video games. to understand and be engaged in the story. Some people will say the same about slowly paced stories. With normally paced stories, authors can fit enough detail in a smaller space; therefore, it takes less time to read books and more time to read other books or do other things. In conclusion, a story should have detail, cliff hangers, detail, and a good pace. Some books can have different paces depending on the amount of detail needed to engage the reader. The pace shouldn't be too slow or too fast. Cliffhangers and suspense should be included to further engage the person. Chapter 37 Leaves Us On A Gripping Cliffhanger Joseph Genesis's Chapter 37 leaves us on a gripping cliffhanger–Joseph is sold into slavery, and Jacob weeps for him–and instead starts to describe Judah, Joseph's brother, and his latest marriage and children. This interjection of the Tamar Episode plays out in Chapter 38, and deals with sex, sin, and deception. Judah has three sons, and when he marries the first one to a woman named Tamar, his son dies because God deems him wicked. Then, Judah's second son marries Tamar, but God kills him because he does not fulfill his duty to have kids with her as required by the law of Levirate Marriage. Judah goes on to prevent Tamar from being able to fulfill the law of Levirate Marriage and remain a member of Judah's household, by keeping her away from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If he is truly right about this pattern of deaths, his third son will die eventually anyways when the time comes for him to marry Tamar. If his prediction of this pattern is wrong, Shelah will die by his own wrongdoings just as his brothers did, rather than die because of his marriage with Tamar. By keeping her away for longer, Judah's predictable and fatherly, but selfish emotions come out when he exiles Tamar as a widow; Judah shows how he cares less about allowing Tamar to have children and to fulfill her duty to the law of Levirate Marriage than he cares about spending time with Shelah. Furthermore, Judah owes his end of the bargain to give Tamar children by one of his sons and let her remain in their family, and he inappropriately keeps her from that in hopes that he would never have to if he waits long enough so that maybe she dies. Judah threatens Tamar's place in his household by telling her that she must wait to marry Shelah "in [her] father's house," sending her back to the life she was supposed to have left when marrying his son. Judah's tone is commanding and insensitive, telling her bluntly that she must "remain a widow" rather than politely asking her to stay away for a while, showing how Judah's desires motivate him above anything else. Through the way Judah treats Tamar, he demonstrates that he cares very little about her as an individual, and more about his own wants and how he can use her to achieve them. In ... • 10. Lamb To The Slaughter By Roald Dahl Favorite Short Story Opinion Essay Throughout our short story unit; we have read many short stories, but one was the best. "Lamb to the Slaughter", a short story written by Roald Dahl was absolutely amazing and my favorite. It included all the aspects of stories that I really like, such as suspense, a good writer's style, and cliff hanger endings. One thing I liked was the suspense. Suspense is a sense of anticipation somebody gets. As a reader, the suspense kept me intrigued in the short story and I always had to keep questioning what will happen next. An example of how dahl created suspense is, when Mary had killed her husband and the detectives came to her house, the reader did not know what would happen. I had many questions forming inside my head. Such as: is she going to get caught? What's wrong with her? Is she going to get away with murder? To answer these questions, I had to keep reading and it ended up making me really ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Roald Dahl (the author of "Lamb to the Slaughter") created really strong images in my head. He used a lot of literary devices, such as tone, mood and atmosphere, but Roald Dahl used mood the best. Mood is a literary device the creates emotions, feelings, images through words and descriptions. Throughout the story, Roald Dahl used mood very well. An example of this would be: "for her, this was always a wonderful time of day. She knew he didn't want to speak much until the first drink was finished, and she was satisfied to sit quietly, enjoying his company after the long hours alone in the house" – Lamb to the Slaughter. Suspense is any time a person is craving to know what will happen next. Authors use various elements such as cliffhanger, delayed answers ,and many more to create suspense. Elements are important if a author wants a successful suspenseful story. However, setting and delayed answers are necessary for the development of a successful suspenseful story. One important element, setting is necessary for the development of a successful suspenseful story. In The Hound of the Baskervilles Arthur Conan Doyle used the moor to create suspense he says, " behind the peaceful and sunlit countryside the long, gloomy curve of the moor broken by the jagged and sinister hills." The question of who and how Sir Charles died is what the story is based upon, and the author doesn't reveal the answer till the end. The delaying of questions causes the reader wanting to know the answer ,and causes suspense in the reader. Another example is the The Monkey's Paw when the characters question if the monkey's paw is real, the wishes will turn out to come true. They ask "Monkeys Paw? • 13. Cliffhangers In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Yes, this was a practical device for playwrights to use in those times because it attracts audiences and gets the play producers money they need for survival. When girls are used it makes the play more alive and realistic. For example, in the book with the play Romeo and Juliet the whole town was excited for the new Juliet which was rumoured to be an amazing actor. Secretly behind all of it, Kit playing Juliet is a girl. "I heard the murmur of surprise and disappointment run around the theatre" (p.106). This shows how everyone was so excited to come and watch the amazing performance by a "boy" who can play the parts just like a girl, but when they realize who is playing the part they won't be interested to come and watch again. Just like if you are going to watch a movie, you obviously want to watch one acted well in versus one with poor acting. When everyone get hyped up about watching the good one, they are expecting a good result. Therefore, I believe this was a practical device for playwrights to use in those times because it attracts audiences and gets the play producers money. The effects on the reader of a dramatic closing for the chapter is wanting to make the engaged and hooked into the book so the reader reads ahead to see what is going to occur. Quotes From 'The Giver' I think the novel ended on a negative note because many quotes and evidence in the novel leaves us in a statement and thought saying that something bad is going to happen or something bad happened. In the novel, The Giver, it states, " The memories had fallen behind him now, escaping from his protections to return to the people of his community." This quote means that every step Jonas took outside of the community, the more his memories didn't belong to him anymore. They slowly started to be in the hands of the community instead of Jonas. Compared to the other stories that attempted to use suspense to, such as Cask of Amontillado and The Perfect Storm, The Most Dangerous Game is superior to the others. To successfully convey the feeling of suspense, the author used intensity, the appeal of the characters, and the cliffhanger ending. In this Mystery, the main character, Billy Weaver finds an interesting lodging that might just change his life forever. Being too trusting is a great quality to have, but when Billy is a seventeen year old who is in a new place, trusting might not cut it. Roald Dahl creates the theme 'Be cautious of the reader's surroundings' by using Foreshadowing and Imagery. In the story, "The Landlady" the central issue is that Billy Weaver, the main character, is too trusting. Billy is in Bath, United Kingdom for a job and was trying to find a place to stay. This caused foreshadowing and a cliffhanger ending to become two of many craft moves Roald Dahl used in this story. In the story, the author, Roald Dahl uses a cliffhanger ending to show one of his many craft moves. The story quotes, "'Gregory Temple. Excuse my asking, but haven't there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?'" (5) The story goes on to say, "'No, my dear', she said. 'Only you.' (5) This ending leaves the reader wondering what happened next and if Billy ever survived. It also leaves the reader questioning about what may have happened to Billy and if the old woman ever claimed another victim. This ending is also mysterious and creepy, leading the reader to ponder over what they just read. The cliffhanger ending was a very smart craft move to use, especially because it's very hard to accomplish. Another craft move that is difficult is foreshadowing. Another craft move Dahl uses in this story is foreshadowing, which is when the author warns the reader about an event that will happen later in the future. One event in which foreshadowing occurs is when Billy's tea tasted like 'bitter almonds', also known as the taste of poison, on page 5. The short story states, "'No, thank you,' Billy said. The tea tasted faintly of bitter almonds, and he didn't much care for it." It is concerning to see that Billy thought nothing of the taste of bitter almonds, which can be used as a form of poison. This event is foreshadowing that Billy has been poisoned and will most likely die from it. This leaves the reader wondering why Billy did not confront the woman and ask her about why the tea tasted like bitter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Cliffhanger In Walk Two Moons By Sharon Creech I. Cliffhanger: a cliffhanger in literature is a device, borrowed from early serialized film, in which a writer ends a chapter on a note of suspense, encouraging the reader to continue on to the next chapter. What is the cliffhanger at the end of Chapter Thirty–One? In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech the author ends Chapter Thirty–One with a cliffhanger. The protagonist, Sal calls her friend and tells her "Phoebe, we've got to find her." and Phoebe replies "That's what I've been telling you." (pg. 132). This is a cliffhanger because the author stops the chapter in the middle of the conversation without the reader finding out what Sal and Phoebe are going to do to find Phoebe's mother. II. Refrain: How does the refrain change as Sal and her grandparents get to the Badlands? What do you predict will happen? In the novel Walk Two Moons the author Sharon Creech uses the technique of refrain to develop the mood of the story. This refrain: "the sound of the wind was hurry, hurry, hurry, and at night, even the silent darkness whispered rush, rush, rush" appears for the first time on page four. She repeatedly comes back to the sound of the wind telling her to hurry and rush throughout her journey. The author uses this refrain to set an ominous tone as well as to create a sense of urgency. When it is time for a writer to conclude a piece of work, the author may choose to leave the audience left to ponder one or several of questions. Those questions may have an answer based off of textual evidence, or the reader must make an educated guess. A story is like a piece of art; it can be interpreted in many different ways and depending on the reader, it provides diverse questions. Persistence – Persistence is an important theme because the Gladers would have never escaped if they gave up and didn't do their part. What was ironic about the first book that Liesel "stole"? Also, what is ironic about Himmel Street? In the novel Liesle really wants to learn how to read. Liesel picks up this book called The Gravedigger's Handbook. She has grown very attached to this book. What's ironic about this book is that she was at her dead brothers "ceremony" and she found the book that fell from the grave diggers pocket that's all about how to bury dead people . For example it says " Standing to Liesel's left, the gravediggers were rubbing their hands together and whining about the snow and the current digging conditions... When he walked away, after a few dozen paces, a black book fell innocuously from his coat pocket without his knowledge" ( Zusak 23). • 35. Examples Of Foreshadowing In Lather And Nothing Else In the short story, "Lather and Nothing Else", the author Hernado Tellez uses foreshadowing and cliffhangers to create suspense. The barber, a secret revolutionary, is forced to shave his enemy, Captain Torres's beard, the leader of the local militia. The author uses foreshadowing to create suspense in the story, when Captain Torres was first introduced in the story. Captain Torres was putting his "bullet–holder where his holster was hanging."(Tellez 1) This foreshadows violence and suggests the death of Captain Torres, by mentioning the gun. Guns imply bloodshed and that something bad is going to happen. Not only does the reader wonder who the mystery man is, but how the barber recognizes him. Another part where foreshadowing was used was when the barber was shaving Captain Torres. The barber had his razor on "on that great big vein. God, it's hot!" (Tellez 2) It's as if that vein represents whether or not Captain Torres lives. It would have been extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One time when cliffhangers were used was when the Captain invited the barber to the executions of some of his fellow rebels. The Captain had no time to rest because he had "'a lot to do this afternoon.'"(Tellez 1) It creates suspense due to the fact that the barber would have witness the deaths of rebels. It leaves the reader wondering what the barber's reaction will be and whether it'll push him to kill Captain Torres. Not only will it be an execution, but it will be something "special". Tellez used cliffhangers again at the very end of the story. Right when Captain Torres was about to leave, he said, '"They kept saying that you would kill me.'" (Tellez 2) This shows that Captain Torres knew that the barber was a rebel, although didn't capture or kill the barber. The whole story makes the reader have an emotional connection to the barber. • 37. Research Paper On Cliffhangers When cliffhangers are employed they capture the audience's attention and create suspense which makes the audience more likely to tune in again. Additional questions that I am interested in to further my claims are how does this film device affect the viewer ratings? Is there a certain formula used per season or can cliffhangers only be used in moderation before they frustrate the audience? In using cliffhangers how do directors balance the script material and make an advantageous effect on the audience without their residual frustration with loose ends? Do they lead to higher viewer ratings than previous episodes that do not employ this technique? How psychologically do cliffhangers affect the brain and make people more inclined to wait and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example viewer ratings from a show's season finale compared to the next season's premier can show the difference in how cliffhangers hook the audience. Psychological studies as well on how cliffhangers affect the mass public can further support my claimed argument. If a credible scientist or researcher in their field have studied or proven through their analysis that cliffhangers do in fact positively influence an audience this would lead to more clout to my claim. Some things I have to acknowledge first hand are my initial biases to not cloud my analysis. I am from a generation prone and used to technology. I'm therefore used to cable, TV and have available access to mediums which use cliffhangers, unlike some people who do not have access to these such as TV. Since I am a lone college student and am not in the work force full time or have other people to take care of I have the leisure time to watch shows, unlike some people that simply do not have the time. Moreover, culturally I live in a country which produces films and TV shows in a style different than other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Does Daphne Du Maurier Create Suspense In The Birds "The Birds" Essay Daphne Du Maurier maintains suspense throughout her short story "The birds" by using different examples of literary devices such as foreshadowing, mood, and cliffhangers. She builds up suspense by using each device a different way. First, Maurier maintains suspense by using cliffhangers to leave readers curious. For example, Nat thinks, "' We've enough for two or three days, not more...'" (18). The readers don't know what Nat thought would happen by that time. The viewers are left curious on whether or not he thought it'd be over or if he thought it would get worse. Also, Maurier states " He threw the empty packet on the fire and watched it burn... " (31). The conflict is never resolved and the viewers are left wondering if the Hockens survive. The desire to know is unfulfilled. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the decades there have been different types of authors that have created terrifying books such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. But how do the authors terrify and surprise a reader? The author surprises and terrifies the reader by using foreshadowing, setting, and cliffhanger. This can be seen in the short story, "August Heat" by W.F. Harvey. The author uses these types of task to surprise and terrify the reader. W.F Harvey uses foreshadowing as a way to surprise and terrify his readers. The story starts on the first line of "Penistone Road, Clapham, 20th August, 19–" (line 1). The author gives the readers the year missing, which gives the reader a clue to a major event that happens in the story. The author most likely did not include the year because he wanted the reader to figure out that the year was suppose to be a date. The missing date at the end helps the reader determine the end. In the end it is suggested that the narrator James will die. If James did in fact not die then he would of have made it to the next day and the date would have been written but the date is not written, the reader can assume that the character did die, which the narrator leave the reader to figure out. ...
