JET is a Tokamak developed by the UK in the 1970's. JET stands for Joint European Torus. The fuel
used in JET is a mixture of deuterium and tritium. It was first fired up in 1983 after five years of
construction and in 1997 it hit its peak output of 16 MW. JET is currently shutdown because it is
being upgraded to increase its power output to 40 MV. The upgrades are occurring to help out in the
development of the largest hydrogen fusion generator, ITER. ITER is the newest fusion generator
that is currently under construction in eastern France. It is being funded by the European Union,
Russia, the US, Japan, South Korea, and China. The project is expected to run for at least thirty
years, ten for its construction and twenty for its usage. The project is expected to cost at leas 10
billion euros, with the European Union paying a hefty part of the sum. The Torus at ITER is
designed to create at least 500 MW for about 500 seconds. The problem with hydrogen fusion is that
it still is in an experimental phase. Humans are still trying to develop a method to gain more energy

analytical Unit of Cairo University using a Vario III CHN analyzer and DI analysis Shimadzu QP–
2010 plus mass spectrometer, respectively. The chemical reagents used are Aldrich and BDH.
Synthesis of 2–amino–3–cyano–4.6–diarylpyridines (2a–d)
General procedure:
A mixture of substituted chalcone 1a–d (0.01mole), dicyanomethane (0.01mole) and ammonium
acetate (0.8mole) in 100 ml ethanol was refluxed for 22 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and
poured into crushed ice with constant stirring. The yellow suspension was filtrated, washed with
water, dried and recrystallized from ethanol to give the corresponding 2–amino–3–cyano–4.6–

In an era where fossil fuels are the dominant source of energy, environmentalists and scientists are
looking for alternative energy sources in the fear that fossil fuels will sooner or later become
consumed by our energy needs. In the hunt to find a strong alternative energy source, scientists have
reverted back to an old formula E=MC2. The indicated formula was first thought up by Albert
Einstein to describe a part of general relativity in the paper "Does the Inertia of a Body Depend
Upon Its Energy Content?" Furthermore, in his publication Albert Einstein explains that mass and
kinetic energy are proportionally equal. Meaning you can transfer energy into mass and vice versa.
In addition if you are able to transfer mass into energy that mass will be multiplied by the speed of
light (C) squared, meaning that a little mass can turn into a lot of energy. Moreover, Einstein's
reasoning for using the speed of light is because atoms when separated travel the speed of light thus
carrying a lot of energy. At the time Einstein was working on trying to find ways to separate and or

profound xkcd cartoon to the right suggests, and these options do not involve polluting the
atmosphere, exacerbating climate change, or contaminating marine life with black goo. Additionally,
fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources, and by definition cannot be expected to last forever. They
are simply not a feasible long–term option. Therefore, rather than merely limit the use of fossil fuels,
world policymakers should put as much effort as possible into developing cleaner, more efficient
energy options like nuclear fusion. When fully commercialized, these more potent fuel sources
should make fossil fuels obsolete by their very presence in the economy.

added H2O2 (1.2mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min at room temperature. This
system has shown high catalytic activities for the oxidation of non–activated and activated alcohols

moment New Zealand relies on energy sources such as hydroelectric, wind power and solar.
Hydroelectric and wind power are limited by the possible locations which means another source of
power will be needed. These sources provide consistent, clean energy, nuclear power sources may

On March 2 2004, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Rosetta spacecraft with the
Philae lander on a 10 year trajectory towards the comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko(67P). Comet 67P
was not the planned destination for the Rosetta mission however, the mission was planned for comet
Wirtanen(46P). However, due to the failure of the Hot Bird 7 launch, the mission had to be delayed
until they determined the cause of the problem. The mission was set for a new comet, 67P. The

With chemical changes such as fossil fuel burnings, the advantages are that a lot of energy is
released during the combustion reaction and extremely cheap. Disadvantages are that, fossil fuels

Efficiency What is the efficiency of a process? There are many factors that are taken into account
when calculating the efficiency of a process, but efficiency can simply be summed up as the ratio
between the energy input and the energy output of the system. According to the First Law of
Thermodynamics, the efficiency of a system cannot be more than one hundred percent. The First
Law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. As stated before, there are
many factors that can affect the efficiency of a system. A few examples of this may be but are not
limited to: excess heat dispersion throughout the system and loss of heat during delivery (i.e. copper
pipes). A fusion reactor's efficiency has the same difficulties as other processes do in terms of having
multiple variables that can affect the efficiency of the process. A fusion reaction can lose efficiency
due to loss of heat during the delivery of the hot plasma. This is caused by the use of copper piping
and the lack of insulation that copper piping has. The reason that the heat from the system travels to
the surrounding air is due to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that energy also has
a quality and flow rate. Energy has a tendency to flow from a system that has a higher energy
state(fusion reactor) to a system with a lower energy state(air or atmosphere). Another way that the
efficiency can be affected during the fusion process is dependent on the length of the pulse. It has
been proven that having a long pulse during the process will increase the efficiency. The use of
spherical tokamak in the design from David Kingham, Alan Sykes, and Mikhail Gryaznevich has
proven to increase the efficiency of the fusion reactor as it allows the system reduce the magnetic
field by a factor of ten which in turn also increases the stability of the plasma throughout the system.

by the binding energy per nucleon. The nucleons in extremely small nuclei have more energy than
those in slightly larger nuclei. Because these nucleons have more energy, they have less binding
energy per nucleon (because the same total binding energy must be split evenly, therefore more
energy=less binding energy to go around). Because of this, when the reaction of two smaller nuclei
fusing takes place, the nucleons must have to lose energy. The subsequent energy that they lose is
the energy that is released. For all of this to happen, a fusion reaction requires utterly immense
temperature of millions of degrees celcius, just in order to force the nuclei to move fast enough to
fuse and stick.

have wanted to understand the reasons for their existence. Experts in religion, philosophy, and
science have all proposed different reasons for and methods of creation. In recent years, especially
with the rise of technology, science has started to become the medium charged with explaining the
universe and its creation. This increased focus on scientific reasoning has changed the way humans
understand creation. Some religious leaders have attempted to figure out how to interpret new
findings into their scripture. Others have refused to acknowledge scientific facts. Is what they
believe still relevant? While their methods of creation are not, some of the archetypes may be
present in scientific theories. Science is constantly changing, and these findings contribute to new
ways of religious thinking.
The Steady State Theory: Science Proves Itself Wrong
Science and myth have been known to have conflicting ideas often. However, also not uncommon
for science to disagree with itself. This can be seen by the two creation theories that were the most
widely supported, the Big Bang and the Steady State theories. The Steady State Theory was the Big
Bang's primary competitor. It proposed that the universe "...was steady or unchanging, except for its

hydrogen will be used to carry out these nuclear fusion reactions being that hydrogen is the lightest
element. There are three main types of fusion that are being theorized as viable options are: proton–
proton chain, deuterium–deuterium reactions, and deuterium–tritium reactions. The most valuable of
these being deuterium–deuterium reactions because deuterium is naturally found in ocean water and
is readily available. This reaction would require temperatures far greater than that required for
deuterium–tritium reactions and with current technology it is seemingly unachievable. For this
reason, deuterium–tritium reactions are most common.
