Educational Psychology Reflection Paper
Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to learn about educational psychology. I
have always enjoyed psychology and was especially interested in how it applied to teaching in the
classroom. There were five specific concepts we discussed over the semester that especially
interested me. I found that homogenous and heterogeneous grouping, extrinsic and intrinsic
motivation, operant conditioning, cooperative learning, and divergent versus convergent thinking are
five psychological concepts that every teacher should learn about in preparation for teaching.
In order to promote the utmost success of students, numerous studies have been conducted to
determine the ideal organization strategies for grouping within classrooms. There are two major
types of grouping, heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous grouping can be described as
randomly grouping students together. The teacher does not group based on any specific criteria and
attempts to involve all types of students within each group. In further detail, there may be one
student who overachieves at mathematics and a student that performs below average in mathematics
within the same group. Homogeneous grouping is arranging students together based on their
academic achievement in particular subjects. For instance, a homogeneous group will contain

According to Merriam–Webster the definition of psychology is "the science or study of the mind
and behavior" (Merriam–Webster, 2015). It is the psychologist obligation to provide assistance to

First, finish college. This step is obvious, therefore, it must be important. Without a degree in the
desired profession I will not get anywhere within that profession. Second, have self–efficiency, not
only in myself but in others as well. Who else is going to believe in me if I do not? Lastly, never

Helping The People Who First Learn Educational Psychology...
Theorise are very important to help the people who first learn educational psychology. It could help
learners understand the factors of human development and it could also guide us how to be a great
educator in the future. There are many different developments in educational psychology, such as
cogntive development, social, emotional and moral development. Each development is significant
and we have to go through. In this essay, I am going to introduce two theorists' different theories on
cogntive and identity development.
"Cognitive development is concerned with our ability to think, to reason, and to understand and
remember the world around us. It involves mental processes that are associated with taking in,
organising and making sense of information– processes that include perceiving, attending to,

Recently single–sex schools have made a comeback, and this has raised the question of whether they
are better than coeducational schools. In single–sex educational systems, male and female students
are separated and taught in different school buildings or classrooms. In a historical point of view,
only boys were given the opportunity to pursue formal education in the United States. Schools for
women began to spread in the beginning of the nineteenth century, almost one hundred years before

Advocates state that students can achieve greater academic success once taught separately,
especially girls. According to Leonard Sax, psychologist and founder of the National Association for
the Advancement of Single–Sex Public Education, "Single–sex education works better. Kids who
attend single–sex schools not only do better academically but also have a better attitude toward
school and a better outlook on life." He also argues that placing them in separate classrooms
wouldn't accomplish as much as separate schools, (NASSE). Sax believes that boys learn differently
than girls and take more time to develop. He uses research about brain maturation, hearing, vision
and temperature sensitivity to support his claim, and argues that boys typically receive more
attention from teachers and have less chances of harassment, and at often times very distracting. He
points out, "What we're doing right now – pretending that gender doesn't matter – is not working,"
he says. "We are losing ground."
The effects can be minor, for example, studies have indicated girls perform better when the
classroom temperature is warm, while boys perform better in cooler temperatures. More

Snowman, Jack (1997) defined educational psychology as a branch of psychology concerned with
the scientific study of human learning. The study of learning processes, from both cognitive and
behavioral perspectives, allows researchers to understand individual differences in intelligence,
cognitive development, affect, motivation, self–regulation, and self–concept, as well as their role in
learning. The field of educational psychology relies heavily on quantitative methods, including
testing and measurement, to enhance educational activities related to instructional design, classroom
management, and assessment, which serve to facilitate learning processes in various educational
settings across the lifespan.
In the period before 1890 many scientists contributed to the field by examining and classifying the
method of education such as Juan Vives (1492–1540) his contribution in supporting the education of
women, recommended the study of nature and advocated induction method of study. Johann
Heinrich Pestalozzi (1782 – 1853) the foundation father of the kindergarten movement. Austin

1 Action research– a process of different methods that are used to diagnose and solve issues that
arise within schools or problems that teachers can face themselves. This process helps to improve or
change the actions of those people involved.
2 Behavioral health– the range of mental and emotional well–being of a person. This would include
how that person copes with normal, day–to–day activities to the challenges of life and everything in
between. Behavioral health also includes the treatments of diseases that people can go through, such

Abstract
This research is on the background of John Dewey (1859–1952), his theories, his influences and the
impact that his research had on the educational systems across the United States. Functionalism,
Pragmatism and Individualism are looked at, as well as Darwin's Theory of Evolution. It also goes
into the
impact that Dewey's theories had on the educational system as it is viewed during John Dewey's
lifetime
and today.
John Dewey (1859–1952) was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1859. He graduated from the
University of
Vermont in 1879 and received his PhD from John Hopkins University in 1884. Dewey was a leading
figure
in psychology, leaning mainly toward functionalism and behaviorism. "The Reflex Arc Concept in
Psychology," (1896)by John Dewey, is considered the major statement in the functionalist school of
thought. Although his main interest was educational psychology, Dewey was a voice for many
liberal
causes. Today his writings are still used by the more progressive factions in the United States.
Because
Dewey's writings and philosophies are so extensive, I am going to concentrate on his influence
related to
the educational system.
Dewey was partial to Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and the writings of William James. You

Johann Friedrich Herbart : Modern Educational Psychology
Out of Oldenburg, Germany, at a time in history where traditional German philosophy was shifting
from its idealist roots towards realism, came a metaphysician who, according to Williams (1911),
would become known as one of the fathers of modern educational psychology. Johann Friedrich
Herbart was born in May of 1776 (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2014) to a father who, although
successful and respected as a lawyer and businessman, had a rather parochial approach to his
dealings, and a mother, who by many was regarded as being highly intelligent, creative, and strong
of character and will (Felkin & Felkin, 1893). It was these qualities, and her unparalleled dedication
to her only child, Johann, that helped to shape him in to one of the great early philosophic minds.
In their introduction, Felkin and Felkin (1893) paint the picture of Herbart's mother being somewhat
overprotective, viewing him as frail as a result of a childhood accident where he fell into a tub of
very hot water. Because of this perceived frailty, she brought in tutors to educate him at home until
he was thirteen, when he began his public education at their local school. The first of his tutors,
Pastor Ulzen (Felkin & Felkin, 1893), planted the seeds of in Johann that would grow to support his
entire philosophical system. Although contrary to his later–developed notions that denied innate

reward" (Perry 2003). It is motivation that stems from your inner feelings and views which feed
your desires to accomplish and perform. Oppositely, extrinsic motivation is "motivation created by
external factors such as rewards and punishments" (Perry 2003). When you are extrinsically

This is a method where you split the class into learning groups to learn about a particular aspect of a
general topic. Once the children master their aspect, the groups get shuffled up so that there is a
master from each aspect to teach the others in the group they have been assigned to. Everyone's
knowledge is compiled together to gain a full understanding of the general topic. This also shows
the students that they can learn from their peers and use them as resources. Another way of
minimizing pressure is to put less emphasis on grades. One way of doing this could be to create a
folder for each student where they will put what they see as being their best work. When going

Taking a Look at Educational Psychology
This course has taught me many new things about teaching. I have gained knowledge about topics
such as moral education, expertise, decision–making, and classroom management, just to name a
few. Through the reading and portfolio essays, my desire to teach has strengthened throughout the
semester. Because of this course, I now have a better understanding of the educational and
psychological needs my future students, as well as myself, will have and how to meet them. The
portfolio essays that I have completed throughout this course have taught me several things. Each
week, the essay reviewed and allowed me to think more in depth about the content in the chapter. I
was forced to think critically about each topic and even occasionally do further research in order to
write the essay. An example of this, and also one of my favorite portfolio essays, was the essay from
Chapter 7. I chose to write the portfolio essay on the television show Sesame Street. I greatly
enjoyed writing this essay, as it was very interesting to watch an episode of Sesame Street while
analyzing it for educational material. Writing this essay opened my eyes to many educational
opportunities outside of school that I can utilize in my future classroom. The portfolio essay from

The utility value is finding usefulness in a task. The student will be motivated if it will help their

It is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the length of time that one can live or
the material abundance that one can acquire, but in the richness and the wonderfulness of life itself.

Sir Ken Robinson's Ted Talk "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" wonderfully describes the many decade
old failures of our education system in the United States. Robinson presentation passionately broke
down how today's educational system is still based off of the original factory industrialized model of
education created in the Industrial age. ( Robinson, 2006) During the late eighteenth and early
nineteenth century the Industrial age fostered the Industrial economy, with this new robust economy,
there was a shortage in qualified skilled labor force. (Leland & Kasten, 2002)
The needs of the Industrial economy spawned the creation of our educational system in America,
whose primary focus was to meet the needs of the under supplied economy by creating a literate
skilled labor force. This educational system was analogous to the assembly line at a factory, where

My Views On Educational Psychology
Educational Psychology has really opened my eyes and encouraged me to think about who I am and
what kind of teacher I would like to be. In this class we have delved deep into ourselves with
different self–assessments, which have lead to a better understanding of our strengths and
weaknesses. Getting to know myself so thoroughly allowed me to realize how dynamic each one of
my students will be and how my teaching style will need to be just as dynamic. Then, learning about
the different philosophies of education helped me grasp how to formulate my own teaching
philosophy. Last but not least, participating in the Junior Achievement program allowed me to get a
taste of actually being in the classroom and gave me the opportunity to test out my own philosophy
temporarily. Overall, understanding my personalities, learning about different educational
philosophies and seeing how they work in the classroom has showed me how to be a teacher that
makes a difference in the lives of my students. Throughout this semester, I really enjoyed taking
multiple self–assessments to understand my own personality, but I think the Types of Intelligence
Assessment and the Educational Philosophies Assessment were the most helpful. First, the

camp and not actual school, the sizes of the groups were different. The younger kids had a bigger
group than the older kids. There were a lot of different ethnicities. Caucasians were most definitely

positive youth development. This is done through projects in STEaM (science, technology,
engineering, arts, and mathematics) fields, life skills activities, and promoting community service.

concept of the counseling profession. Additional facets to learn is how to create a therapeutic
environment for the client. Furthering on these aspects, we have to learn to interact with clients to be
better able to help them in different areas of their life including social and professional. Final
features to learn about counseling is how clients view their own life to produce more therapeutic
opportunities. Throughout this paper I will discuss these various features of counseling. While we
go through our education to become a therapist there are several theories and concepts to learn. At
first, I didn't want to become a counselor when I started college. However as I gained knowledge
about the profession I began to develop a love of everything that it is about. In my educational
experience with therapy/psychology we have discussed on our views of concepts in counseling.
These discussions always have me thinking of my own life and experiences in the field. When it
comes to counseling my personal opinion is, I believe that counseling is a noble field to get into for
a career. I view therapy as highly effective in assisting individuals through their difficulties. I also

Educational Psychology fosters an understanding for student development and helps teachers be
effective, design lessons and make a difference for their students. First we must define what
education psychology is, and how it applies student development and to the education community.
The textbook, "Educational Psychology" written by Anita Woolfolk, (2012), defines educational
psychology as, "A distinct discipline with its own theories, research methods, problems, and
techniques. Educational psychologists do research on learning and teaching and, at the same time,
work to improve educational practice." (p. 12). Essentially, educational psychology is the study and
research behind creative and effective learning strategies and the principles for development and
learning. It enables teachers to reach and engage their students at the highest level of learning with
effective learning strategies. Learning educational psychology through the study of cognitive
development and the influences on children and adolescents as they grow, the implication of moral
and identity development, as well as obligations teachers have professionally to create safe learning
environments that promote high expectations and inclusion of all learners, helps teachers to nurture

  • 1. Educational Psychology Reflection Paper Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to learn about educational psychology. I have always enjoyed psychology and was especially interested in how it applied to teaching in the classroom. There were five specific concepts we discussed over the semester that especially interested me. I found that homogenous and heterogeneous grouping, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, operant conditioning, cooperative learning, and divergent versus convergent thinking are five psychological concepts that every teacher should learn about in preparation for teaching. In order to promote the utmost success of students, numerous studies have been conducted to determine the ideal organization strategies for grouping within classrooms. There are two major types of grouping, heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous grouping can be described as randomly grouping students together. The teacher does not group based on any specific criteria and attempts to involve all types of students within each group.
