The origins of yoga date back to India over 5,000 years ago. The Vedas, holy writings that are the
foundation for Hinduism, possess ancient yoga teachings known as Vedic Yoga. Individuals became
reliant on Vedic yoga to live their life in divine harmony.
The period of Pre–classical Yoga coincides with the development of the Upanishads. The
Upanishads fortified the writings of the Vedas, therefore strengthening the practice of yoga. The
history of yoga has been widely associated with not only Hinduism but Buddhism as well. Siddharta
Gautama, the enlightened one, founder of Buddhism understood the benefits that yoga provided for
meditation. The goal of Buddhism is to find inner peace, which yoga assisted in. In other regions,
the ruins of the immense cities of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa, depictions have been found engraved
on soapstone seals that strongly resemble figures of yoga poses. Bhavagad–Gita, is the earliest
known yoga scripture dated back to around 500 B.C. The Gita is dedicated entirely to yoga, its main
aim is that –– "to be alive means to be active and in order to avoid difficulties in our lives and in
others, our actions have to benign and have to exceed our egos." Its connection to the Upanishads is

fairly straightforward about a women's place. For example, most Western religions
(excluding the Roman Catholic Church) allow women in leadership roles within the religious

even Islam, which does not allow women mullah, have had many influential female sufi's
throughout Islamic history.

Hinduism is so entwined in Indian culture, as I have shown, that most other cultures have a difficult
time assimilating Hinduism into their own society. Even when Hinduism is assimilated into a
culture, such as Hindu movements in the
United States, women are sure to find discrimination in not only the traditional gurus and swamis
who are teaching them, but sexist commentaries deeply ingrained in religious texts.
Buddhism suffers from the opposite extreme. The Buddha originally banned women from monastic
practice but later reversed his decision, allowing them to practice in separate quarters.
Buddhist scriptures say very little about women, treating them as equals. In one scripture, the
Visuddhi Magga, a monk asked:

Swami is a small boy from Malgudi. One morning he wakes up and decides not going to school. He
makes certain excuses of his bad health but all goes in vain... Later his father asks him to go to his

a gathering of short stories composed by R.K.Narayan and likely the most renowned title connected
with R.K.Narayan with the special case of "Swami and Friends." So what is so unique about
R.K.Narayan 's exposition that earned him so much honors? That is only the catch. There is nothing
unique and that is the place the claim to fame lies. The composition is disarmingly basic, the dialect

Driving up to the snow dusted gravel road that lead to what would be my first temple experience, I
couldnʼt help but feel overcome by nerves. For the most part, I consider myself to be a well versed
and culturally competent person. Anything related to the Indian culture such as food, fashion or

Worldview Of The Bhagavad Gita
The Bhagavad Gita looks at the purpose of life in their own unique way. Cycles of human life can be
perceived on varying levels, dependent on your religion and beliefs. When considering the Hindu
beliefs, their worldviews can be described as the actions you enforce here on earth, motivated by
either desire or duty. When living in a world dominated by personal inclinations, it is easy to fall
into the temptations of selfish desire. Krishna radiates his concerns of exactly this in the form of
apprehension, keeping his people's best interests in mind. Due to the Hindu belief of reincarnation,
the pressures of enforcing your actions through duty, not desire, is essential to restoring your

The 1960s saw the rise of a disproportionately large number of new religious movements (NRMs) in
America. Many of these movements were rooted in existing faiths, from Judaism to evangelical
Christianity to Buddhism, and were often populated by members of the emergent American
counterculture. Concurrently, the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 was being passed into
law, which lifted many restrictions on immigration to the United States and prompted a new influx

How I understood it is :
Here "during the bright half of the lunar month" means, in the period of Shukla Paksha
(bright lunar fortnight or waxing moon ) and "during the northern movement of the sun" means,

Tarachand Chakravarti one of the leaders of the "Young Bengal" group was appointed the secretary
of the organisation. Weekly service was held originally, every Saturday evening; later it was
transferred to Wednesday, a practice which has been retained to this day at the Brahmamandir of
Tagore's Shantiniketan. It consisted of three successive parts, viz. recitation of the Vedas by Telegu
Brahmins in the closed apartment exclusively before the Brahmin members of the congregation,
reading and exposition of the Upanishads for the general audience, and singing of religious hymns.
This would correspond exactly to the reading of the Bible, the sermon and the hymns of Christian
worship, and on this point Rammohun's previous Unitarian contacts had certainly been of
considerable help by providing him with a model of congregational worship which was alien to the
spirit of Hinduism. The parallelism however was confined exclusively to the outward form. The
contents of Rammohun's universal worship were thoroughly Hindu in character. The reading of the
vedas exclusively before the Brahmin participant does not apparently accord well with the universal

Vedic rituals in Calcutta at that moment was the orthodox Telegu Brahmin community and its

The four paths of yoga are used in different ethnic backgrounds. In my understanding of yoga which
in today's society many believe the same. I believed that yoga was a form of exercise which you
contort your body in different angles. I was sadly mistaken by what I believed was right was not
right at all. As a matter of fact Yoga is actually a form of religion. In Yoga religion they have

About six years ago I was a drug user heavily. When I found sanctuary without the use of drugs I
remember seeing the beauty of nature around me. When neighbors cut their grass I can smell the
fresh cut grass on the wind. I would have to say that this is the path I would choose to follow
because of the love it has in it. I believe everyone should be happy and joyous with all around them.
For me I love everyone and hate no one. Even when someone has done me wrong I believe that if I
pray for him or her they will come around to the light and change their ways.
The third Yoga practice "Karma: Way of work" is another form. Karma yoga is service rendered
without any interest in its effects and without any personal sense of giving. My belief in this yoga
practice is that the person believes that he is not in control of himself but a Higher Power is control.
In a sense this is absolutely correct. I believe to myself that I'm not in control but a Higher Power
other than myself is influencing me. Like the time I prayed to God to guide me in my move. I wasn't
sure if I should move out of state or stay in California. The next day came and I received a letter
from my employer explaining that they are letting me go. I saw this as God guiding me forward that
there is something better for me elsewhere.

I visited "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" temple, located on Clark and Lunt, founded by A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. A temple is a place of worship for followers of Hinduism. The
important aspect of a Hindu temple is that it not only focuses on communal worship but it also
serves as the home of God; most temples "enshrine Vishnu, Shiva, or the Goddess and their
encourages." Although it is not mandatory to visit a temple, it is considered to be a vital role in the

The "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" was the very first temple I visited. There was a little garden area
that led to the first door. The door to the entrance was quiet simple, not like I expected. I have
always thought the temple doors would be highly decorated, representing an elegant line of antique
furniture. As I stepped inside, we were to take our shoes off, as an act of respect and devotion.
Visitors and worshippers are required to remove any footwear before entering. The shoes are taken
off so they don't make the house of God dirty; it is a normal custom in India. There was another door
that led to the hall, where the murtis (statues) of the deities were present. Above my head, I
witnessed a bell (ghanta) hanging down. This was to be rung before taking your first step in.
Heading into the hall, I immediately noted how lively the atmosphere was and how clean and

understanding and sympathy. The central theme of A Tiger for Malgudi is Gandhian in the sense that
the novel presents the victory of the Gandhian virtues over violence and rudeness. Narayan presents
two sets of contrasting relationships between Raja, the tiger and the Captain at first and between
Raja and the freedom fighter turned Sanyasi later in the novel.
The relation of the captain and the tiger is that of the master and the slave – the ruler and the ruled.
This binary relation is mechanical, materialistic, momentary and compulsive; administered and
monitored through cane and fear. These relations are polarized in a way similar to that of the

There are almost 196 nations in the world. Each country is known for its religious beliefs and
culture. In each country, there are various kinds of people living on the globe. Each religion is
somehow connected to provide peace in the world. While coming to my country, India is also well
known for its prosperity and richness of having different people admiring their own religions.
Secondly, Indian constitution allows the citizens of India to follow their own religion. They are also
allowed to change their religion any point in their lives. Several religions such as Hindu, Islam,

Before this period, Prabhupada distanced himself from traditional Hinduism and publicly stated that
his movement was not Hindu: "I don't want a Hindu temple. Our constitution is different. We want
everyone". However, the movement was forced to abandon this conviction as anti–cult sentiment
grew in the 1970s. By the middle of the decade, ISKCON fell under intense scrutiny by the media
and government officials. In order to protect the movement "against accusations of being a
dangerous cult, the leadership asked ISKCON's Indian supporters to speak to the movement's
authenticity as a traditional Hindu religious group". This testimony was successful in alleviating
public fears and allowed ISKCON to escape government sanctions. Without the leadership and
support of Indian immigrants, ISKCON would have been far less prepared to survive the death of its

Two major groups have historically populated the membership of ISKCON: first, the rebellious
youth of the American counterculture, and second, the Indian immigrant community that exploded
in the wake of 1960s immigration reform. While Indian–American devotees currently represent a
large proportion of ISKCON's following, their circumstances appear to differ dramatically from
those of the counterculture's hippies.

My First Visit at the Hindu Temple Essay
I decided to visit a Hindu temple because the Hindu religion was the religion that I knew the least
about and was interested in. This assignment gave me an opportunity to learn more about this
religion and what their worship services and rituals were like. The temple that I went to was called
BAPS Shri Swaminaryan Mandir and it was located in Lilburn. As soon as I walked in, I was

The Mandir (temple) was constructed with Italian marble, Indian pink sandstone, and Turkish
limestone. The walls were all carved with delicate carvings of Gods that were carefully shipped all
the way from India. The Hindus had very strict rules that had to be followed, such as: no smoking,
drinking or eating inside, cell phones had to be turned off, and we had to be silent. We also had to
take our shoes off before entering the temple out of respect for the deities and to keep the floors
clean.
When I first entered the main worship room, I saw three women walking around the gods in
clockwise motion. This clockwise motion is called Pradakshina, a form of worship that represents
the fact that god is the center of everything and everyone else surrounds him. There were several
gods in the room, each stored in their own window. Many people ranging from old to young kept
going up to each god and doing their own prayers. I observed that the prayers were performed in a
special way. You had to put your two hands together, close your eyes and pray to that specific God. I
couldn't understand the prayers they were reciting because they were saying it in language.

Temples have altars and many statues or depictions of Krishna in which one can perform puja to
Krishna. Mantras are also performed several times daily. These mantras are usually very simple like,
"Hare Krishna, Hare Rama." Like other forms of Hinduism, ISKCON holds the Vedas and the

In The Other Wes Moore, the author Wes Moore used direct and indirect characterization to get his
point across that every action has a consequence. Whether it is going to military school, selling
