In The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal, a wounded soldier asks Simon for forgiveness for a terrible
crime he committed during the Holocaust. He is on his deathbed, and asks a nurse to bring a Jewish
person to him. The nurse brings Simon and Simon doesn't forgive him, instead walking out without
saying anything. After reading The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal along with multiple essays
responding to it, I believe Simon should have forgiven the man because he was manipulated into
thinking what he was doing was right. The soldier had asked the nurse to bring Simon to him
because he felt the need to share his crimes with a Jewish person. He tells Simon, "I must tell you
something dreadful... something inhuman"(Wiesenthal, 11). He shows remorse by calling his crime
dreadful and inhuman, and all he wants is to tell Simon his story and be forgiven. The soldier is
heavily wounded, and his face is covered in bandages. He tells Simon about how his own parents
didn't trust him as a child because he joined the Hitler youth. Even if his parents didn't agree with
what he was doing, they should always be able to trust their own son. When the war began, he

When the students first enter the classroom each morning, they should expect a predictable set of
tasks to be awaiting for them as they arrive this will set the tone for the entire day. 8.30 a.m.: As the

The only thing that disturbed me in my opinion was the latter half of the movie, where it goes
through an enormous time skip and tries to take itself seriously, which in my opinion changed the
pacing drastically. The latter half also takes place after the death of the Spiral King and explains

this show was providing and just gave me a "what happened?" type of vibe. This really dragged

I went to see a Disappearing Number, in the Theater. The production was performed by Complicite

Another really effective aspect to the performance was the use of technology, including sound
effects, projections, pod casts and voice overs. The scene which stood out most for me, concerning
technology would be the scene where Al is trapped in the lecture theatre. Here, he begins to look
through Ruth?s belongings of books, papers and passports. While he is doing this, actions too small
to be seen from the audience, a live streaming is being projected up onto the whiteboard behind to
show us, as the audience, what he is looking at. Al starts to read a page from a book which has been
marked down and as he starts to read a voice over starts reading the same words, quietly at first and
as that gradually builds up in volume, Al?s voice decreases in volume till its just the voice over

Carry On was written by Rainbow Rowell after the success of her book Fangirl –– a novel in which
the main character, Cath, in a fanfiction writer for Simon Snow (the character by which this book

that comedies shouldn't be overlooked. Starting off as a writer for variety television and becoming a
playwright with several Broadway hits, Neil Simon is an important figure because his plays are not

Neil Simon was born on July 4th, 1927 in New York City. He grew up in the Bronx and later moved
to Manhattan. After graduating from De Witt Clinton High School in 1943, Simon briefly attended
New York University and the University of Denver (Berkowitz). Although, Simon never graduated
from university and instead trained in the Army Air Force Reserve (Jackson). After being

Style
Upon reading the first page, I knew this would be an enjoyable read. Not only is Nomi's family
entertaining because of their quirky ways but Miriam Toews sarcastic sense of humor thrown into
Nomi's everyday activities keeps the tone of the book light even when Nomi goes through trialing
times. The book is written in the first–person narrative, told from the perspective of Nomi Nickel
and read similar to a memoir. The story starts off smack–dab in the middle of Nomi's present–day

I do not like The Mouth and find him creepy. The reason being is mostly because of the tight hold he
has over the town through the bizarre purge he started when he became the pastor. Although after
learning his backstory, it all made sense, and I began to feel sorry for him. The Mouth changed from
an ordinary guy finding his way in the world to an extreme religious leader. It seems he uses his
religion to protect himself because of what happened in his past when he went out into the world to
explore. Moreover, outside of the Mennonite faith, everything was too free, and he couldn't handle
the pressure of it as he's more comfortable in the boundaries of his religion where no one can judge
him. Travis does not seem to be competent boyfriend material. He shows little respect for Nomi by
leaving her out in the rain, and through his constant quest to change her. Nomi expresses questioning
thoughts when she often feels pressured to talk and carry intelligent conversations to satisfy him. It
disheartens me to think that she stays with him; I believe boredom and low self–esteem cause this. I

The American Dream In John Irving's A Prayer For Owen Meany
Bernie Sanders, politician and former presidential candidate, is cited as saying, "For many, the
American dream has become a nightmare." Concise yet compelling, this quote represents not only
todays opposition to the idea of an American dream; it captures a reality that has existed since the
American dream's inception. On the surface, it is a beautiful rags–to–riches tale, a harmless
capitalist ideal; see past the facade, however, and one will find a plethora of immorality and
inequalities spanning race, class, and gender. One of the most prominent events in American history
that put the American Dream under the citizens' lens was the Vietnam War; the draft and the loss of
countless innocent lives forced the average American to reevaluate the morality of a dream deeply
ingrained in their culture. John Irving skillfully weaves the Vietnam War into A Prayer for Owen

During this portion of the chapter, Jack, tired from running, stops walking through the forest to catch
his breath. The character continued on. His hair had grown longer and was lighter from the sun's
rays. His back was sunburn and was starting to peel. Only wearing his distressed shorts and carrying
a sharp stick in his right hand, Jack crouches to within inches of the ground as the narrator notes,
"He closed his eyes, raised his head, and breathed in gently with flared nostrils, assessing the current
of warm air for information. The forest and he were very still"(Golding 48). Jack continues walking
forward. The forest is quiet, more overwhelming than the heat. As the sound from a bird echoes

In the book The Color of Water, the author, James McBride not only takes us through his own
journey, but also gives us a perspective on the life of his mother, Ruth. James' admiration for his
mom reflects throughout the story while showing the readers the growth and development her
character experienced as she went through life. Ruth McBride–Jordan endured many heartbreaking
hardships throughout her life, but nevertheless, had an innumerable amount of cheerful and zestful
moments. She grew to be a remarkable woman; however, it was a long journey before she became

Simon Bolivar was born July 24th, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela. His family consisted of a slew of
wealthy Creoles, or those born in America but of European decent. However, early on in his life he
was faced with tragedy when first, his father died when he was three and then his mother soon
followed as he neared the age of only six. Although his parents' deaths seemed untimely and tragic
but, because of the wealth of the family, Bolivar had great access to two very important tutors who
would mold his later ideals of independence.
First was Andres Bello, who taught Bolivar about science and exposed him to Enlightenment ideas.

The Lord of the Flies is one of the most well–known books. This book evokes fear, discomfort, and
even confusion. This rapid pulse classic isn't about boys shipwrecked on an island but a secret

beginning or end of something new in the story. For example, the island and the ocean, the water

published poet and a famous Puritan writer. The poem is about Bradstreet fleeing her house after she
wakes up and discovers that her house has been engulfed in flames. She begins to mourn the loss of
her personal items but quickly scolds herself because she believes God has created a home for her in
heaven. As Bradstreet takes her mind off losing her earthly possessions, she realizes that she must
dissolve her ties to the real world and instead focus on keeping a strong relationship with God.

the shaping of the character through the characters thoughts when events happen. Like when, Nomi

have feelings of depression. The writers bring up subtle comparisons between the poem and

capable of being shaped into the desired world of the manipulator. The manipulator in this instance
is the decadent and sardonic Mrs. Robinson. She holds the cards because she knows how to play the
game. Ben is young, naïve, and inexperienced. Mrs. Robinson spots these characteristics and
uses them to get her way. When Ben questions their actions, she insults his masculinity by claiming
this is his "first time" which leads to their first sexual encounter. Mrs. Robinson knows how to
control him so that he does take part in this affair because at the moment all she wants is him. I don't
think that Ben has any idea what he is doing; it is almost as though he has nothing better to do than

In this close viewing I will be using the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, directed by Edgar
Wright, to show significant aspects/techniques of different scenes used in both films. I will be
focusing on the features of sound effects, dialogue and comparing near same scenes within two
different films and the aspects that Edgar Wright was trying to cover.
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz both have fence jumping scenes. In Shaun of the Dead, the scene is
opened with Shaun opening the gate quite forcefully along with the rest of his team. Shaun says
"The Winchester's just over there" and David says in a sarcastic tone, "Just over there behind the 20
garden fences?" When David is saying the last bit of his sentence the camera pans over the fences in
which they have to jump to show audiences what they have to jump over. For example, to show why
David is being sarcastic towards Shaun, and why it's being used in that particular scene, Shaun then
says "What's the matter, David? Never taken a shortcut before?", and smirks while turning behind,
and tries to jump over the fence but ends up making the fence fall over. He then picks himself back
up and subtly tries to make it seem like he didn't just break the fence. The background noise in this
scene is filled with car alarms, house alarms and deep music/sound effects. This creates the effect of
a crisis situation, as they are in a zombie apocalypse.

William Golding fulfills Hobbes' ideas about man with Lord of the Flies when Ralph and Jack battle
over chief authority, when Simon gets killed, and when the boys turn savage against each other.

Setting/Environment:
On November 13, 2014 at Grossmont College's Child Development Center, I observed Konnor who
was born on March 11, 2011. At the center, there are roughly around 15 children between the ages of
three and five; there is one adult for every six or so kids. The preschool center's indoor environment
is safely secured with a locked gate that separates the outside door which leads to the younger
children centers and parking lot with the hallway to the learning and play area. There are two

presented to him. Konnor begins to stack up the Lego blocks separately according to the color; all
the blue blocks were stacked neatly in a separate stack, as well as the red blocks and so on. Konnor

Owen Meany, a Mystery Every high school in America has cliques. Groups of like–minded
individuals who band together and form what is known as high school. There are stereotypical
cliques, the jocks, punks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and more that could be found anywhere and
everywhere. It is hard to fit in sometimes because not everyone fits into the molds of these groups.
That is how John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany is. This novel does not fit the stereotypical

The novel has religious themes embedded throughout. The theme of miracles was prominent in A
Prayer for Owen Meany. For example, it is believed that Owen Meany himself is a miracle of God.

Throughout the poem, Anne gives her readers a brief summary of her father and the relationship
they shared. It it very apparent that Bradstreet loved her father dearly and thought very highly of
him. However, this was not the only father she shared a relationship with. Anne also had a lifetime
relationship with her heavenly Father as well. Bradstreet was a devout woman of the Puritan
religion. Puritanism was not only Anne's religion, but it also served as the foundation on which she

A great Puritan by the name of Thomas Watson once spoke the words, "blessedness...does not lie in
the acquisition of worldly things." I suspect Bradstreet would have loved that quote, seeing that she
too, believed that happiness did not lie in possessions. Anne Bradstreet states, "Upon the earth he
did not build his nest, / But as a pilgrim, what he had possessed" (33–34). Just with those two lines,
one can already catch a glimpse of what kind of man Thomas Dudley was. Bradstreet is saying that
her father knew this was just his temporary home. Thomas Dudley knew that this was not his
forever home, just a stopping point along the way. Bradstreet goes on to say, "His thoughts were
more sublime, his actions wise, / Such vanities, he justly did despise" (47–48). In these lines,
Bradstreet shows how her father despises vanities, just as she did. Anne greatly infers that Thomas

"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ." This
quote from 1 Corinthians 3:11 appeared in many of his works and points to the Christ – centeredness
of his theology (Machiel). This verse reflected on what he believed and the entire movement that he
led during his time. He made huge contributions to the Anabaptist movement and later became their
leader. Menno Simons lived from 1496–1559, during his life of 63 years he was a man of many
different things like being a priest, leader of the Anabaptists, a husband and a father. Very little is
unknown about Simon's childhood except for that he grew up in a very poor peasant environment
with his mother and father. His parents were most likely to have been dairy farmers (Machiel). He
married and had three children after he left the Roman Catholic Church. When he was training to
become a priest he learned Latin and some Greek and he never read the bible before or during his
training because he didn't want it to influence his Catholic beliefs. It is not exactly known where
Simons may have received his training but it was probably in a nearby monastery (Machiel). When
he was finished with his training he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1524 at Utrecht. For
twelve years he was a Roman Catholic priest and for the first seven years he severed as parish priest
in his fathers village of Pingjum and later for five years in Witmarsum where he was born. Later on

Intertextual relationships between texts exist to influence a reader's perception and add layers of
depth to the texts' meanings resulting in a heightened experience and a more significant
comprehension of the texts' ideas. Detecting such intertextual relationships between two wildly

animated mecha television series, Gurren Lagann, has enriched my understanding of the differences

Both the two texts follow the 'The Hero's Journey' story structure (also known as a monomyth),
