Pros And Cons Of Niccolo Machiavelli
There is one name that is synonyms with diabolical, cunning, scheming and unscrupulous politics,
Machiavelli. Niccolo Machiavelli was a brilliant intellect of the Italian Renaissance. He was a
Diplomat and Soldier contrasted with a historian, poet, and dramatist, which are reflected in his
writing. He was a patriotic person that wanted secure Italy, especially Florence, against all enemies
and he understood that many decisions need to make that will produce the best results. Born to
Florentine nobility in 1400; His early career was as a conducting diplomatic mission for Florence to
other Italian cities, France, and Germany. As a diplomat and soldiers, he was privy to may atrocities
and actions that had both positive and negative results depending on the situation and how they were
implemented. Niccolo Machiavelli aimed The Prince to show how to build up a principality capable
of expelling foreign interest and restoring the independence of Italy. It was a vivid portrayal of
politics in that day and age. It was originally released in 1513 but was not widely published and
distributed until 1532, five years after Niccolo Machiavelli death. It has both been praised and
criticized at various points in history on the pros and cons of this thesis of political tactics. William
Shakespeare even used Machiavel to emphasize in Henry VI, how evil GLOUCESTER was:
"I can add colors to the chameleon, Change spaces with Proteus for advantages, And set the
murderous Machiavel to school"
Many counter views have been published over the years. One of the most comprehensive was the
Anti–Machiavelli. An 18th–century essay by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia and patron of
Voltaire, stated: "Machiavel's advice if followed uncritically be a prince, may lead to real tragedies
in the real world". Richard Christie and Florence L Geis even developed and named a psychological
test to reflect an aspect of a person's character, the Machiavelli test ("MACH–IV: Machiavellianism
Test"). This is to test for one of the "Dark Triad Personality", the others being narcissism and
psychopathy. The Oxford English Dictionary described Machiavellian as "duplicitous interpersonal
style, a cynical disregard for morality, and a focus on

Niccolo Machiavelli And Socrates
Two of history's greatest political philosophers, Niccolo Machiavelli and Socrates, have very
profound, yet contrasting beliefs on how a prince should assume and make use of their power. Not
only do the two disagree over how someone with authority over a state should rule, but their
contrasting beliefs regarding the fundamental values of society, such as honesty and liberty, expose
just how different the political mentalities of the two enlightened thinkers are. According to Plato,
Socrates' core beliefs are founded on the preservation of truth, maintenance of justice, and the
importance of wisdom among all members of society. Socrates, who's idealistic set of values focuses
on the importance of justice and wisdom, forbids any unjust actions taken by a prince solely to
maintain his power. On the contrary, Machiavelli's ideal prince is cunning, deceiving, and strategic,
taking any action necessary to maintain his authority and the prestige of his state. Therefore,
Socrates would vehemently oppose the unjust actions taken by Machiavelli's ideal prince to preserve
power, being that his values of honesty and morality would be unreservedly disobeyed. Moreover,
Socrates would disapprove of any political system in which the prince stands by, and takes action in
adherence to, Machiavellian values, or lack thereof. Machiavelli's beliefs on doing good vastly
differs from that of Socrates, who lives his life in pursuit of truth, understanding, and a perfect soul,
rather than reputation and honor (Apology, 29e). Instead of valuing honesty and morality,
Machiavelli believes that men who have authority over a state are justified in taking any action
necessary, even murder, to maintain their power. He argues that men are naturally poor decision
makers, and almost always let conscience lead them into making detrimental decisions. Machiavelli
argues that "anyone who abandons what is, for what should be, pursues his downfall rather than his
preservation" (Prince p.62). This quote Austin Hanover GVPT 241 0105 Paper 1 10/13/17 2 shows
that Machiavelli views the concept of truth not as something that is necessary among all men, like
Socrates does, but as an action that should sometimes be avoided by a prince, because it often

Niccolo Machiavelli And Saint Augustine
Niccolo Machiavelli and Saint Augustine differ greatly in their views and opinions on how one
should act towards another in regards to compassion and Charity. Augustine was a theologian who
came to light at the time of the collapse of the Roman Empire. Augustine's views were heavily
dependent on his Christian beliefs and perspective as well as believing there are two realms that
interact with each other; the material realm, and the immaterial realm. In contrast, Machiavelli, who
was an Italian philosopher from the renaissance, had a much different cynical view on how one
should treat others. Machiavelli's beliefs on compassion and charity demonstrate the absence of
what one would consider Christian like behavior as well as not seeing a distinction between the
heavenly realm and the earthly realm, a direct contrast to Augustine's Christian beliefs. Augustine
and Machiavelli both had very different ideas when it came to virtues. Machiavelli believed you
could not stay in power by sticking to virtues by stating "It is necessary for a prince who wishes to
maintain his position to learn how to be able not to be good" (Machiavelli, 72). Machiavelli did not
believe human nature was naturally righteous and held humans who were not in power to a low
standard with little respect. According to Machiavelli, although he somewhat values a man's word,
he is more of a proponent on being deceptive as he believes it is the one's who have been deceptive
that have accomplished the most. He

Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Summary
The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli was the first to clearly decipher politics from ethics by studying politics in such
depth and thought. He created the basis of what politics should be and how they are runned for
today. His book The Prince is primarily a handbook for all rulers to follow to be the most successful
in their reign. His book is considered political realism which means he speaks about only the truth
of politics, so it can be used for the practice of governing. Machiavelli's book is the handbook for
obtaining and maintaining power even for today's modern politics.
Obtaining power is one of the most important ways to either become a ruler or gaining the right to
rule. But, in today's politics the president is already in power so he doesn't have to gain much more.
Machiavelli lays out 3 ways to obtain power in chapter 5. "The first is the destroy it...who will keep
the rest your friends." (Machiavelli, pg. 11). In today's government we don't go out destroying
countries to add to our land but about 500 years ago we would go to war to obtain the control of
whatever space we wanted in the US. Way two is what the president does today which is live in the
US since he is in control of it. Lastly, the president will probably never do the third way which is
leave his country to live under another country's rule to become friends. "Since love and fear can
hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved."
(Machiavelli). This quote Machiavelli strongly believes in goes over the extent of the president
today. No one running or currently president wants to be known as the evil one or someone who is
feared by many. They want to be loved by many to win the votes but they also need to have a
backbone so they don't have other countries stepping all over them. But, this quote can be seen used
by bad rulers in history and even today. One example is Hitler, he rose to power and was feared by
many especially the people he targeted. He was able to obtain power so quickly because the
Germans trusted him since being drilled to Heil Hitler at such a young age. Obtaining power back
then is way over the extent to how the government today gains their power.

Corrado Vivanti's Niccolo Machiavelli: A Portrait
Corrado Vivanti's riveting book, Niccolo Machiavelli: an Intellectual Biography, translated into
English in 2013 posthumously, offers exactly what the title states. While his main focus lies with
Machiavelli's republican ideas, he still manages to fit in a minute discussion of Machiavelli's
religion. For the most part, Vivanti's Machiavelli strongly dislikes the church. Machiavelli believed
that religion proved necessary for determining morality and customs, "but ancient religions were
more suited than Christianity" Yet again, similar in fashion to many of the other historians,
Machiavelli describes Christianity as weak and the cause for all the problems of Rome. However,
"religion is not intended as an individual feeling; its deepest essence consists of the ability to ...

Celenza,'s book, Machiavelli: A Portrait, offers an account of Machiavelli's life, placing Machiavelli
within the context of his time. His depiction of Machiavelli's religion proves interesting as well.
Machiavelli mentions God throughout all of his works, however, God, Celenza argues, remains
unimportant to Machiavelli. Celenza denies the possibility of Machiavelli as an atheist because that
identity did not exist in that time period. Celenza's Machiavelli uses irony extensively in regards to
God and the church, especially targeting ecclesiastical princedoms. Part of the issue regarding
Christianity for Machiavelli lay with the "disorder" and power in Rome. The Papacy, inherently
corrupt at this point, "have states and do not defend them, have subjects and do not govern them."
Not only did Machiavelli find fault in the Church, but also with Christians. Like many of the other
authors, Celenza points out Machiavelli's argument that the Christians exalted humility, the fact that
life on earth represented only a transitory pilgrimage. Christianity garners criticism from
Machiavelli for not striving for strength or power, men of action are needed to keep the city–state

Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Chapter Summaries
A Summary and Analysis of The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli
The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli, is a novel describing how to acquire, rule, and build up a
nation. Essentially, the novel acts as a "how to" guide instructing the reader on the steps it takes to
build an everlasting empire. The novel itself is directed towards prince Lorenzo de' Medici, who
took over Italy in December of 1469 after his father, Piero, passed away. In the novel, Machiavelli
includes many pieces of information, which he believes are completely true in hopes that one–day
Italy will be saved. To prove his point throughout the book, Machiavelli incorporates many
historical facts about previous mistakes that other rulers have made. He uses historical examples

Throughout the novel, the author is consistently able to tie in all of the "rules" to being a successful
leader together in his historically accurate peripheral narrative that was written over 500 years ago.
Unlike the popular view that many historians share concerning the "innovative" book, The Prince,
one historian thinks differently. Paul Sonnino is a professor at the University of California Los
Angeles. Sonnino is known for studying and teaching Early Modern European History as well as
Historiography. Currently he is working on several books, essays and articles, many of which deal
with postmodern topics. One historical analysis that he is known for is his view of the popular book
by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince. When asked in an interview for The UC Santa Barbara Current
what he thought of the prince, his response shocked many readers, and threw a new theory into the
mix about what Machiavelli really meant. "...Machiavelli–" Sonnino began "–was in fact a

Lao-Tzu And The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
While Thoughts From The Tao–te Ching by Lao–Tzu and The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli are
both pieces of work that serve as ground rules or guidelines for a ruler on how to rule a country, the
two authors' prepositions vary tremendously. One author takes on a susceptible viewpoint, while
another takes on a much more conservative outlook. There are many factors as to why they differ so
much. Even though Lao–Tzu and Machiavelli both provide intricate structures as to how rulers
should run their state, there are extreme differences between the two. The most obvious difference
between Lao–Tzu and Machiavelli are their moral perspectives and beliefs. Lao–Tzu is very mellow
and easygoing person. He believes that the best government is one that runs itself, in the sense that
the government should have very little control. Lao–Tzu is very passive. In his section titled
Thoughts of the Tao–te Ching, Lao–Tzu says, "The world is sacred. It can't be improved. If you
tamper with it, you'll ruin it. If you treat it like an object, you'll lose it" (208). This quote strengthens
the claim that Lao–Tzu believes in a government with little control. This is most accredited to his
religion. He is a person of the Tao, and he is very reliant on the 'Master', or the god of Taoism. He
believes that the Master controls everything, yet does nothing in the sense that people hardly are
aware that the Master exists. Because of his knowledge of the Tao and the expectations of the

The Prince is one of the greatest work of the famous Niccolo Machiavelli. It talks about how to
sustain and to obtain political power. In this book, he explained the different principalities such as
the hereditary, religious, use of power and others. He also mentioned the characteristics of the prince
must possess. This novel focuses on being a leader. It's not all about in a good way but also in a bad
way. It's very different on other novels we know in being a leader which everything is all about
being good. Machiavelli wants to point out that people cannot commit in being a good all the time
because at the end they might just fail. I believe that he wrote this book not only to mention all
things about a leader but also for the people to relate it in real life situation. There are different
messages he brought to the people for them to learn something such as strategies, characteristic, and

that he will be loved by doing things that will make people happy. This is a good strategy to remain

Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Summary
The book The Prince by Machiavelli was written by him for an essential "guide" to ruling, but many
scholars today argue it is more of an idea of how to rule. Niccolo Machiavelli was born May 3,
1469. He was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, and writer in the Renaissance
period. The prince takes place around Renaissance Italy and the Florentine Republic roughly in the
years 1400–1600. Machiavelli starts the book by dedicating it to the magnificent Lorenzo Di Piero
De' Medici who was a very powerful statesman of the Florentine Republic who had ruled with his
brother (Britannica Encyclopedia). Something that really stood out to me in this dedication passage
was that Machiavelli talks about how "he can offer no better gift than the means of mastering in a
very brief time, all that in the course of so many year," (vii) and by this he means his gift of
knowledge. Earlier on in the dedication section he discussed how people leave gold, armor, horses,
etc. In this scenario knowledge being the greatest gift he can give out triumphs materialistic items.
In the first couple chapters of The Prince it talks about principalities of being a prince, while also
discussing the main point of the book, which includes power politics and warcraft to say the least.
For pretty much the rest of the book it discusses advantages and disadvantages of different routes
toward power, how to acquire states, make alliances, and eventually talks about violence and
cruelty. In the

Summary Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
Sustaining Power In 1513, Niccolo Machiavelli wrote "The Prince," in which he discussed the
characteristics that qualify a leader to have control of his people. Machiavelli claimed that a leader
ought to associate with vices that have a positive impact to his rulings to avoid embarrassment, thus
building a strong leadership. This claim is policy because it delivers the message of ruling.
Machiavelli's audiences are former rulers or anyone aspiring to become a leader. Machiavelli uses
logos appeal to support his claim. One example of his logos support is when he states that a prince,
or anyone seeking power, should ignore peoples' opinions. Machiavelli uses this logo to pass the
message that being so good to others and giving them clemency can result negative in reign. This is
a concise fact on how to rule during those eras, where there were no laws and orders in the society,
yet the leaders needed to uphold their reign. Another logo applied in the passage is when he states
that sometimes it is better to create fear on people than for them to love their leader. Some people
are imposters or hard to convince, thus creating fear, and being brutal to them will be easier for a
leader to control. Through the application of such logic, the author is able to provide that sometimes
you have to be tough on the people to impose your rules. Machiavelli uses pathos to support his
claim. An example of pathos is when he states that when a leader is with his army, he has to avoid
being cruel. By doing this, he can be able to keep his army with him. This is an example of pathos
since it creates compassion so they can be united and will not make anyone feel attacked or not
needed. This statement helps convince the former rulers, or aspiring to be, that on some occasions
you have to back away from being feared and lean towards compassion. It will allow your people to
trust you. Another example of pathos is when Machiavelli states that friendship cannot be relied on
though situations, especially when that friendship was won by favors. This support is ethos because
it creates fear and makes people aware that they cannot trust one another. This helps convince the
leaders that it is important to be aware that most of the time people

Chapter 17 Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli is clear and concise in his work The Prince. He reveals some of the cold hard
truths about people of power and human nature in general. The principles, although may seem
outdated and irrelevant in today's society, they are very much apart of the world we live in today.
One point that Machiavelli elaborates on in Chapter 17 of The Prince is, "Is it better to be loved than
feared?" He believes that "it is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both", but why?
(Machiavelli) In Chapter 17, Machiavelli believes it is safer to be feared than loved because it is a
lot easier to control someone, in this case a nation's people, with fear than with love because love
comes and goes and is unreliable. Fear however causes

Idealism In The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
In The Prince, originally written in 1513 and later published in 1532, Florentine administrator and
diplomat Niccolo Machiavelli argues that a ruler must take appropriate action based upon
pragmatism and independence in order to seize and hold power. Based on the circumstances, a ruler
must be able to select between contrasting influences: liberality and parsimony, virtue and
immorality, prudence and recklessness. The book was very controversial when first published
because it contended the Christian ideals that rulers should always be good and just, but the novel is
highly acclaimed today. Machiavelli not only proposes a series of revolutionary political ideas in
The Prince but also offers a persuasive and masterful defense of them.
The base of Machiavelli's guide for rulers is the prevailment of practicality over idealism. The
philosopher writes in chapter fifteen, "the way men live is so far removed from the way they ought
to live that anyone who abandons what is for what should be pursues his downfall rather than his
preservation. . ." (Machiavelli 54). This is a profound statement which still holds true today. People
constantly reap benefits from their lack of ethics while the kind ones are left behind. Machiavelli
often uses anecdotes from the reign of his contemporary Cesare Borgia to support this. In chapter 7,
Machiavelli discusses Borgia's reconciliation of the divided factions in the ruler's newly acquired
territory of Romagna. Borgia appointed the tyrannical

Niccolo Machiavelli Praised Or Blamed
I agree with Niccolo Machiavelli, in his observations and insights on how men (people) are "Praised
or Blamed" especially in when the person holds a position of leadership, such as a holding the title
of a Prince. The point that Machiavelli draws on is that if a person lives their life neglecting key
elements that would keep his core values in check; will eventually met the evil of his own demise
that will destroy him. Knowing his own vulnerabilities, and how to restrain himself from falling
victim to the available vices will save him from his own ruins. The point of "Cruelty and Clemency,
and Whether It Is Better to Be Loved Than Feared" is also addressed by Machiavelli and states,
"That every prince ought to desire to be considered merciful and not cruel. Nevertheless he ought to
take care not to misuse this mercy" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
103). Machiavelli points out that the prince's decisions and actions should not be quick, nor should
he allow himself to express fear. Controlling his emotions to an even temperament with, "prudence
and humanity" (pg. 103) this would keep the appearance of him being overconfident avoiding the
people's distrust in him. True friendships come without a purchase price, They gift of friendship is
earned whereas being feared, there is no respect or friendship. However, being loved Machiavelli
prescribes that this is, "Preserved by a link of obligation" (pg. 103). Knowing limits and boundaries
is also a must; going after another person's property or processions will not win you favor among
your peers. This act of restraint ties into his philosophy of, "Being feared or loved" where his
concluding thought is, "He must endeavor only to avoid hatred"

Three Points that Niccolo Machiavelli Illustrates in The Prince
Niccolo Machiavelli is a very pragmatic political theorist. His political theories are directly related
to the current bad state of affairs in Italy that is in dire need of a new ruler to help bring order to the
country. Some of his philosophies may sound extreme and many people may call him evil, but the
truth is that Niccolo Machiavelli's writings are only aimed at fixing the current corruptions and
cruelties that filled the Italian community, and has written what he believed to be the most practical
and efficient way to deal with it. Three points that Machiavelli illustrates in his book The Prince is

Machiavelli has another argument "concerning those who become princes by evil means."# He
believes that cruelty can also be used to benefit the prince but only in modesty. If a prince frequently
relies on cruel acts then he will not live in power for long. Proper use of cruelty is only achieved
when it is done "out of the need for safety" and when it is done swiftly as to make sure that the act is
quickly forgotten, and the people can return to a feeling of safety.# His idea that cruelty should be
swift is excellent, this way the citizens will feel more at ease with there prince, because if he were to
drag out the atrocities then the people may feel the need to revolt to protect their personal freedoms
and civil rights. Many people may think these are evil ideas, but it is completely practical, during
Machiavelli's era (and even today) a prince will always face a moment in this rule that he will have
to act in a cruel manner, in no way is this statement cruel it is just a practical way of dealing with a
inevitable situation. He also believes that "benefits ought to be given little by little, so that the
flavour of them may last longer."# As much as people may be discusted by this

Essay about Niccolo Machiavelli
According to legend, just before his death, Niccolo Machiavelli told his friends that had remained
faithful to him up until the very end about a dream he had had. In his dream, he had seen a group of
peasants, wretched and decrepit in appearance. He asked them who they were. They replied, 'We are
the saintly and the blessed; we are on our way to heaven.' Then he saw a crowd of formally attired
men, aristocratic and grim in appearance, speaking solemnly of important political matters. Again,
he asked them who they were and where they were going. 'We are the damned of Hell' was their
answer. Machiavelli later remarked that he would be far happier in Hell. This story was from Viroli's

There were many new ideas and theories popping up during that era. The cultural revolution was
causing civil unrest throughout Italy. Machiavelli's family was part of Florentine nobility and well
educated, but they were considered middle class financially. Machiavelli loved to read classic
literature, a characteristic of both his parents, and his thinking was influenced by the Medici, Plato,
Aristotle, Socrates, Seneca, and his education at the University of Florence.
Born on May 3, 1469 in Florence, Italy, his father was Bernardo di Niccolò Machiavelli and his
mother was Bartolomea di Stefano Nelli, both from noble families. In 1502, at the age of thirty–
three he married Marietta Corsini and proceeded to have four sons and two daughters. He died on
May 22, 1527 in Florence, Italy with a bad reputation from his theories being misunderstood. His
grandson, Giovanni Ricci, was important because he preserved many of Machiavelli's letters and
writings for future generations to read and interpret. Machiavelli had, overall, a very successful
career and accomplished many things as an important political figure in Italy. He was well
renowned and considered the first great politician of his time. He was also the first politician to
apply Aristotle's scientific method of separating morals from facts. But, he was also accused of
plagiarizing theories from others. At the relatively young age of twenty–nine, he secured the high

The man chosen for this paper will be no one than Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli was a many
things during this life such as a politician, humanist, a writer, but most important he was the founder
of modern ideas on who we look at politics and day to day situations. Machiavelli was born May 3
1469 in Italy. He was born during a important era in Europe called the Renaissance era were art, and
humanism began to flourish. Machiavelli had other idea as giving in depth look how rulers and
states must take control of their people in order to maintain power. He would go on to write one of
the most important book still use today by many business, law schools, universities, politicians ,
rebels, and even criminals known as The Prince. Machiavellianism was a term to describe to be
immoral behavior and can be seen as a negative in cases. He laid out the blue print in The Prince for
future rulers and governments how he thought once have to act in other to be set part from being a

The book The Prince brought a different outlook on political stands but one of the most important
one is one about how it is better to be feared. In The Prince Machiavelli would go on to write," It is

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Italy in 1469 and began his political career in 1498. At that time,
Italy was struggling politically. The government was so corrupt and was comprised of several
independently operated city–states. What further complicated matters was that this is where the
pope lived. He was leader of the Catholic Church, controlled his own territory, and had more
influence than any prince of any of the other city–states in Italy. Machiavelli was suspected of being
an enemy of Medici and was thrown into prison until he was able to prove his innocence. These
were the circumstances which inspired him to write The Prince. In The Prince by Niccolo
Machiaveli, the prince in which it was so aptly named, securities were entirely dependent on his
reputation among his citizens. His methods used to maintain order and peace in his kingdom are still
acknowledged by politicians of modern society. That being said, his reasoning behind his actions
was not out of a desire to serve the public, but to preserve his seat of power and authority. Today,
The Prince is commonly used to educate readers on how political power can corrupt officials as well
as the many adverse effects it has on the government. Although few educators would agree with The
Prince's ideals, few would deny that the methods described would be effective. The cruel and selfish
nature of the prince described in the book is frowned upon in modern politics. However, the prince

Composed nearly 500 years ago, Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince" presents another perspective
on the meaning of virtue. Machiavelli's definition contended against the idea presented by the
Catholic Church. Machiavelli did not force any opinions of his own, somewhat he composed from
his experience and whatever theory that prompts activities which created successful results in the
political scene of Italy and different nations. While Machiavelli continues to be scrutinized for his

Then again, he can lead by fear. The most valuable treasure to any human is their life. If somebody
is set in a place to lose his or her life, one will do whatever is necessary to preserve it. This method
has the value of being under the control of the ruler. Machiavelli has proposed time and time again
that have that power to yourself is always ideal instead of offering it to the general population you
lead. The underlying reason is that it shows strength and power. People are more inclined to obey
when a leader has the qualities to bring repercussions if an order isn't followed.
Intimidation and fear are tactics which are obsolete in the modern era. If a leader of the country fails
to perform according to expectations, he will be faced with consequences. Either someone new will
be selected, or an election will result with an opposing party participating. The whole concept of
democracy was to shift the power from a ruler to the mass. People now have a fundamental right to
voice their opinions and concerns, and it is part of a healthy democratic system. The Prince states
that "Everyone sees what you appear to be, but few know what you are" (Machiavelli 57) which is
as valid of a statement in Modern Era as it was during the Renaissance. Across all cultures and
societies over the world people always want to have the characteristic of being called "good." With

Niccoló Machiavelli: Fear or Love
Machiavelli: Fear or Love? Niccoló Machiavelli's The Prince is a book of political philosophy that
describes the perfect leader in a republican fourm of government, the very form used in American
society today. Machiavelli explains what qualities the ideal "prince" should have as well as how he
should go about conducting his business. Although both qualtites would be desirable, he argues that
if the prince were to choose between being feared or loved by his people, the prince should choose
fear. While living under fear is not ideal, it is true that the feared prince is a better leader than a
loved prince. Love and fear are two completely different emotions that bring out the best and the
worst in everyone. In The Prince, Machiavelli asks us, "Is it better to be loved than feared, or the
reverse?" He tells us that a combination of the two would be the best, but that it is almost impossible
to have both. Thus he concludes that "since men love at their own choice and fear at the prince's
choice, a wise prince takes care to base himself on what is his own." In other words, a smart leader
knows that if power is awarded based on love, power can be taken away just as easily if people fall
out of love with you. But, if people fear the prince, the power is held in his hands. While living
under fear is not ideal, Machiavelli believes a prince creating fear is better than letting murder and
other criminal activities continue under your power. Men will readily harm a loving man but

Niccolo Machiavelli and Martin Luther found themselves to be surrounded by darkness and heavy
fog that clouded their vision. They both were feeling lightheaded from the heat and lack of stamina.
Luther found a lit candle that allowed him to see Machiavelli a few feet away from him. As the two
approached each other they began to recollect their final memories and their location. Luther is
confused as to why he has been placed in purgatory and finds discomfort in his lack of effort to

Despite many people being against his way of thinking, Machiavelli's way of thinking was brilliant
because of his interpretations in The Prince. One of the main reasons why Niccolo Machiavelli was
a great leader is because of his dual purpose writings, which led him to success. His most famous
book is The Prince, the proof of his brilliant but misunderstood mind. The above mentioned book
was originally written to help rulers – specifically, Lorenzo Medici. Many of the ideas written in
The Prince were very controversial and caused the book to be banned and for Machiavelli to be

He knew the things that made a kingdom weaker and he knew how to manage most situations and
most people. The italian writer of The Prince could keep people safe and satisfied enough to let him
rule and keep his kingdom strong. Reading his book that is written in a very honest and raw words
did eventually lead to misconceptions. People started to label Machiavelli as a bad, corrupt person,
or a Machiavellian. But seeing the other side, he was a brilliant mind and if he had ruled he would
have been the best ruler of all times. There is no other way his book could persevere through the
years if it was not brilliant and different from what everyone had and until this day has read (Kniatt).
In conclusion, Niccolo Machiavelli was a brilliant person. He could have been the biggest and most
successful ruler of all times. His intentions were to help weak rulers and kingdoms become strong
and successful. The term Machiavellian comes from a misconception of people that could not

Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince
A successful prince should be free from the moral limitations of the church, secure in his power
because of military strength and unpredictable in his ruling decisions. Niccolo Machiavelli is
writing The Prince with the purpose to focus on practical advice and not to encourage obedience to
perfect or extreme ideals. Rulers should focus on gaining or protecting power and not worry about
the gaps between what actually works and what is the religious way of virtue. The concern is not on
being guided by ethics but on winning. Machiavelli believes that human nature is a mixture of both
good and evil, but political power needs to be based on what actually works and gets results, in
order to prevent the evil conflict caused by a weak ruler. Losing

Analysis Of Niccolo Machiavelli
In 16th century Italy, the prince's response to the suffering of people affected the attitudes and
behavior of how they treated the prince. A ruler's goal was to secure his reputation holding his
power in control without nourishing any hatred on themselves as a leader. A ruler sets an
impression, reflecting how their subjects behave by his actions. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote his
treatise "The Prince," in 16th century Italy. As a political theorist, Machiavelli put his concerns
towards cruelty and clemency and argues whether or not it is better to be loved than feared.
Machiavelli advises future leaders arguing what makes an ideal ruler and the impact rulers would
have on politics. In the excerpt, he refutes what makes a function of a ruler– ... Show more content

Machiavelli's text "asserted in general of men" is directing the attention towards the ruler's men, his
people, that their "ungrateful, fickle false, cowardly, covetous." This text represents the attitude and
personality, men living in the 16th century were capable of being. The men during the 16th century
were scheming multiple changes to their interest and minds when they feel obligated to the loved
ruler. This affected the rulers status because love to a ruler is "fickle false." The rulers men would
easily try to take the opportunity to take advantage of the ruler. He who is a loved ruler, is only
loved for the actions he can do. And for when the ruler can't make a gesture for his people, they
would turn against their ruler. Which, would affect the ruler's power to be in control. Unlike being
feared, the rulers people will do as he says, do to the sense of fear and will not cause any trouble.
Machiavelli advices rulers to be feared to his people because of being less likely to be fooled and be
taken advantage.
To secure rulers reputation, holding their power in control without nourishing any hatred on
themselves as a leader. A ruler sets an impression, reflecting how their subjects behave by his

being hated if he were to be a feared ruler. The ruler must prevent any cruelty acts that would affect

Analysis Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
MACHIAVELLI'S LIVED WORLD: SETTING CONTEXT Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince was
written in a time of political and civil unrest in Italy. For decades the city–state of Florence suffered
several political uprisings and the establishment of new governments. From tyrannical rule to the
creation of a democratic republic, and finally the re–establishment of the Medici family, The Prince
comes from Machiavelli's lived experiences in these political regimes. Machiavelli blames the
division of Italy into city–states and the socio–political unrest on ecclesiastical authorities and the
Church. The Church's reliance on mercenary arms, and the influence of the papacy are blamed for
the power struggle amongst the city–states.

Third, along with being feared, a prince can utilize violence against the people to control the state.
However, violence can only be used all at once because it will be more effective. Utilizing violence
will bring state success because it will force social cohesion to issues/tasks that are necessary for
stability and prosperity. However, a prince must be sure not to incite hatred against him. Should a
prince steal property or a man's wife, he will be hated and from this he loses the trust of citizens.
Finally, a prince is most successful when he is practicing forethought yet acting decisively
(consequentialist). A prince cannot be cautious and fail to take control of situations. If he is cautious,
it makes him look weak. A prince must be proactive in decision–making, and cannot leave things to
chance.
CRITIQUING MACHIAVELLI: THE FAULTS OF MACHIAVELLI'S HERO Machiavelli's ruler
traits may be more realistic than Plato's as they are representative of human nature, but Machiavelli
fails to give a "perfect" ideation of his prince. Machiavelli uses the example of Cesare Borgia, the
son of Pope Alexander VI, as his hero. Borgia was instructed to control Romagna whose citizens
were causing political unrest and not paying taxes. To do this, Borgia appointed a duke, Messer
Remirro de Orco, to bring order to the territory through violence if necessary. De Orco goes to
Romagna and commits murder to have people fall in line.

Idealism In The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
Through the perspective of Niccolo Machiavelli the importance of realistic goals plans and actions
are clearly describes in his book the prince. A ruler speakers concern must be internal security the
states ability to protect its self from external threats and practicality in order to keep his state.
Machiavelli with especially clear how little he values Christian morality and principalities. He
argued that the realm of idealism would only bring a pretty down for the difference must strive to be
practical and that he must learn how to work in a frame of something other than moral. Though the
practice of moral principles is useless to a prince, machiavelli did say that it prints should allow
themselves to participate in moral goodness but only when those actions do not threaten the security
of his state. However Machiavelli makes it clear that being a prince is not a moral occupation and
that when the time comes to be in moral a ruler must be able to frame to their people then in moral
action was at least necessary if not to be able to deceive them into believing that the action was
moral to begin with. An excellent example of a prince craft fully framing a situation to his

Changing Interpretations of The Prince and Niccolo Machiavelli
After five hundred years, Niccolo Machiavelli the man has ceased to exist. In his place is merely an
entity, one that is human, but also something that is far above one. The debate over his political
ideologies and theories has elevated him to a mythical status summed up in one word: Machiavelli.
His family name has evolved into an adjective in the English language in its various forms. Writers
and pundit's bandy about this new adjective in such ways as, "He is a Machiavelli," "They are
Machiavelli's," "This is suitable for a Machiavelli." These phrases are almost always the words of a

It is telling that, unlike Machiavelli, Hart makes the fictive claim that his tome has been requested of
him by the dedicatee; this may help explain the supreme confidence, bordering on arrogance, that

Dick Morris, in his The New Prince, displays his own political ideologies and talks about his
experience in the Clinton White House for examples of Machiavellian behavior. "Morris's book is
all about Bill Clinton, and not incidentally about himself." (Emery, 7/26/99) Despite his high
political standing, he is not qualified to become Machiavelli's torchbearer in the twenty–first
century. "The book does not deserve actual comparison with 'The Prince.' Suffice it so say the
Machiavelli is entertaining to read and offers both wisdom and heart along with his steely advice –
all beyond Morris' reach." (Turner, 7/20/99)
Hart's and Morris' novels border on arrogance and pomposity. Both men forget that the basis of The
Prince was rooted in classical historical examples, and neither provides any to supplement their
arguments.
Perhaps the worst offender to Machiavelli, however, has been the American media. Journalists have
fallen in love with comparing prominent figures to Machiavelli, not realizing that by describing

Political Philosophy Of Niccolo Machiavelli
Introduction: Niccolo Machiavelli's seminal work The Prince was a seismic shift away from the
tradition of political philosophy as espoused by the likes of Plato and Aristotle. Renaissance Italy
was a tremendous era of human advancement, but also a deeply unstable one, with wars and tyranny
ravaging the Italian peninsula. Due to the nature of the political climate that Machiavelli was living
in, his political doctrine would have to be of a different nature than Plato's idealistic focus on virtue,
and in turn become more "grounded" in reality than some of his predecessors. Consequently, it is
unfair to label his prescriptions for the contemporary ruler as immoral, as his focus was on ensuring
the quality governance of the states of Italy. While some of the means to ensure this stability could
be deemed cruel and an abuse of power, for him the ends justify the means, and the requirement of
the sporadic use of immoral methods to help end the instability that plagued the lives of innocents is
a price worth paying.
The World of Machiavelli: When individuals think of the Italian Renaissance, what often first comes
to mind are the works of artists such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Few however, consider the
tumultuous state of Italian politics. Due to just how influential contemporary politics were on
Machiavelli's political philosophy, it is of the utmost importance to have a basic understanding of
Italy's history prior to The Prince's publication. Since the collapse of the

The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Summary
Niccolo Machiavelli's abstract work of The Prince discusses politics and government and focuses in
not only acquiring power, but also how to maintain it. Throughout his work, one of the most
prevalent yet disputed themes is between the acquirement of states between principalities and
republics. The Prince shows a predominant and constant debate on which group will excel in
acquiring power. However, despite Machiavelli's harsh criticisms on principalities, his work does
not solely praise or focus on the excellence of republics. In fact, as Machiavelli continues to speak
and provide examples about the successes and failures of both republics and principalities, it
becomes clearer that the lone purpose of The Prince is to merely provide tactics in political
governance, instruction on how to maintain power once it is acquired, and most importantly, advice
on how to become a great leader.
One of the most prevalent themes found in Machiavelli's The Prince is the theme of fortune.
Machiavelli, though in disguise, focuses on the theme of fortune in chapter four and explains how it
plays a heavy role in acquiring power. Chapter four begins in introducing states ruled by a prince
with barons and states ruled by a prince with appointed ministers, and continues by distinguishing
the similarities and differences between the two groups. For states ruled by a prince with hereditary
barons, Machiavelli claims that power is easier to acquire as the prince receives help in conquering

Analysis Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli From the moment a child is born from the womb, they are
consistently instructed to follow the strict rules of what is classified as morally correct in order to
succeed in life, and yet, The Prince, composed by Niccolo Machiavelli of Florence, goes against
every word of these such instructions. The Prince is a historically controversially book written for
Lorenzo de Medici, intended to assist him in improving the situations occurring in Italy at the time.
In this book, Machiavelli provides advice that many would consider morally wrong due to his
opposing views to how to become a great ruler. The society The Prince describes to be ultimately
the most dystopian relies most heavily on two areas, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another side to the dystopian society would be the lack of a functioning military. According to
Machiavelli's own words, "Mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous; and if one holds
his state based on these arms, he will stand neither firm nor safe." Therefore, one may deduce that if
such a civilization were to rely so heavily on mercenaries and auxiliaries, it would certainly fall to
ruin. He claims that the skillful mercenary will always aim to be just above the ruler, and will often
end in overthrowing them as they have their own ambitions, while an unskilled mercenary will fail
you in the usual manner. Counting on the own wit and war knowledge of the ruler himself, if they
have studied war tactics very little and seldom needed to play either defense or offense, they will
find themselves not prepared in the time of war and will fail. In conclusion, the dystopian society
would rely heavily on the hope that they would not be attacked and would have little to no
preparation in the area of war, while if they found themselves to be in such a situation, would rely
on buying their own soldiers who could potentially overthrow them at any off chance. This raises a
question as to the morality of these men presented in The Prince and as to whether they are good or
evil. The evil of men

Niccolo Machiavelli Around 1513 Niccolo Machiavelli while writing "The Prince" would not be
considered a theologian. When thinking of Machiavelli many people confuse him together with the
names of rulers who have abused his writings. It also seems other people confuse Machiavelli with
the rapper who took his name. Either way people confuse Machiavelli it seems they fail to look at
his true message, bettering the state and the greater good. Machiavelli may seem evil to some but

When thinking of right and wrong would it not be right to save more even though you have to hurt
some? Machiavelli is not against all that is good. Machiavelli, although thought to be, is not against
religion. Machiavelli believes religion is a great unifier. A fact many have overlooked in his
philosophy. Also it seems there is a hint of belief or acknowledgement in God in his passage
"Although one should not reason about Moses, since he merely executed what God Commanded,
yet he must be praised for the grace that made him worthy of speaking with God. But let us consider
Cyrus and the others who acquired great kingdoms: they were all praiseworthy, and their actions and
institutions, when examined, do not seem to differ from Moses, who had such a mighty teacher."
This quote too could be Machiavelli simply covering his tracks so he does not seem blasphemous
and the punishment that would come with being blasphemous. It is interesting though why he would
even mention Moses when he could have been as easily left out? Machiavelli believed for a prince
to be successful he must found a state that will not need a prince once he dies. This belief was
stretched over The Prince and The Discourses. The question though is how can a prince make
himself obsolete or should he make himself completely obsolete? The answer is no he can not make
himself completely obsolete. A Prince should establish a republic but still

Compare And Contrast Socrates And Niccolo Machiavelli
Socrates and Niccolo Machiavelli are two very well–known and continually studied Western
philosophers who have had a large degree of influence on intellectual thought and political
organization since their times. In the works Apology and Crito, the Greek philosopher and Socrates
contemporary Plato lays out Socrates' philosophical beliefs of finding the truth, seeking wisdom,
and acquiring knowledge for the betterment of the soul. In The Prince by Machiavelli, he lays out
his guidelines for how a prince should go about obtaining, maintaining, and strengthening power,
and how a successful principality should be run, and was written and sent to an actual Florentine
ruler, Lorenzo the Magnificent. Socrates would most likely not be very supportive of Machiavelli's
idea of the ideal prince due to Machiavelli's emphasis on obtaining power and keeping his attention
away from the needs of the people, as well as endorsements of cruelty, never questioning the law,
and putting morality on hold for the sake of power, while Socrates' philosophy is centered on the
individual and how each person should pursue knowledge and goodness.
In his book, Machiavelli clearly lays out how a prince should run his principality and what society
should look like under his control. Machiavelli talks about either the prince requiring the ability to
use his foresight and his own abilities and talents to gain power, or gaining power as a result of
fortune, such as when he says a "private individual becoming a

order to obtain control of their country. In the book, Machiavelli writes, "...that are applied at one

Political Philosophy Of Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli, a banished political theorist once said," The first method for estimating the
intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him." Compared to the men around him,
Machiavelli has the most compelling political philosophy. Machiavelli certainly is a leading
political theorist who uses history and straight forwardness to prove his point. The Prince is filled
with great knowledge that has the ability to inspire the reader. Niccolo Machiavelli use of historical
analysis, realist attitude and brazen syntax are the driving forces that make his political philosophy
so compelling.
Machiavelli found it really important to study those that came before him. Machiavelli states, "I
have been unable to find among my possessions anything which I hold so dear or esteem so highly
as that knowledge" It is this knowledge and carefully analysis of history that makes his argument
truly compelling. Theorists before him like aristotle used observation and imagination in order to
develop their political theory's. But observation does not determine political success it is the careful
analysis and emulation of great leaders . Machiavelli proves this when he says , " But as to exercise
for the mind, the prince ought to read history and study the actions of eminent men,...and above all,
do as some eminent men have done in the past,..so that when fortune changes she may find him
prepared to resist her blows." This speaks to the spellbinding nature of Machiavelli's

Analysis Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
During the Renaissance, there was a strive to modernize the world into human outlook which
focused on the ability of humans to act and not blindly follow a religious plan. Humanists believed
God had given humanity options and potential, and humanist thinkers had to act to succeed and
make the most of this: it was a duty to be the best. Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian Humanist, wrote
The Prince as a guide for his own prince, Lorenzo De Medici, to promote himself into the political
arena of Italy. He analyzed power and the way Italy could become its own state and keep control.

Due to the unsatisfaction of the cause, the people will not join in battle and rebel against their leader.
The third value of leadership is to hold good virtues (Machiavelli, 62). Through strong virtue a
leader is able to gain the people's support, but acting virtuous can often be detrimental. A prince
should not avoid virtues of cruelty and dishonestly if he is applying them to the state. Machiavelli
simply states that cruelty and other vices should not be pursued for ones own sake, but only for the
sake of the state. The fourth value that Machiavelli states is that a leader should never turn to
auxiliary or mercenary units but rely on their own arms. The use of their own people shows how
supportive they are of the cause, that they are willing to die for their leader. On the other hand, the
use of auxiliary units will weaken the leader's territory since they do not provide support nor fight
for their leader's cause because auxiliary units follow their own rule. The fifth and final virtue is
intelligence. The use of intelligence allows for a leader to find balance between all the virtues in
order to gain the support of their own people. A leader with intelligence is a leader with great
confidence and pride in his own decisions. A leader who display's confidence in their decisions
gains the support of their people because they can rely on this individual to refine their

AP U.S. Government and Politics
The Prince
In our world, most societies support governments that work in a righteous way, but how can acting
righteously be effective in a chaotic world full of crime and war? In the novel " The Prince" by
Niccolo Machiavelli, who defines a dystopian society as an illusion of a perfect government which
is maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, and totalitarian control. This illusion, however, fades
once one recognizes how these actions beneficially impact a society by uniting and protecting the
people and country. Throughout the novel, Machiavelli preaches about various political principles
and new ways to acquire and maintain political power. Niccolo also suggests many strategies and
new classifications that a good prince should follow in order to maintain a successful reign. The
ideal prince must be a fierce individual who must be capable of executing harsh, yet fair decisions
among the people in order to ensure effective rule. Those who follow the guidance of Niccolo in the
novel are not evil because in order to be a good and powerful leader one is required to show strong
leadership, maintain domination for the benefit of citizens, and at times be feared rather than be
loved.
Machiavelli thoroughly explains that rulers ought to lead their people how the world is in stead of
how the world should be. A good leader is not concerned necessarily about what is right or wrong
but about what is most practical and effective no matter the cost." Cesare Borgia was reputed cruel,
yet his cruelty restored Romagna, united it, and brought it to order and obedience"(Machiavelli, 43).
Although Cesare was thought of as cruel to certain people in Florence, yet was able to carry out the
vision and bring order back into the city. Cesare knew that the only way to restore the city of
Florence was to put up a guard against the abuse of this quality of mercy. In order to govern a
nation, an honorable leader must govern firmly though will be hated by many. A strong leader must

Pros And Cons Of Niccolo Machiavelli

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of Niccolo Machiavelli There is one name that is synonyms with diabolical, cunning, scheming and unscrupulous politics, Machiavelli. Niccolo Machiavelli was a brilliant intellect of the Italian Renaissance. He was a Diplomat and Soldier contrasted with a historian, poet, and dramatist, which are reflected in his writing. He was a patriotic person that wanted secure Italy, especially Florence, against all enemies and he understood that many decisions need to make that will produce the best results. Born to Florentine nobility in 1400; His early career was as a conducting diplomatic mission for Florence to other Italian cities, France, and Germany. As a diplomat and soldiers, he was privy to may atrocities and actions that had both positive and negative results depending on the situation and how they were implemented. Niccolo Machiavelli aimed The Prince to show how to build up a principality capable of expelling foreign interest and restoring the independence of Italy. It was a vivid portrayal of politics in that day and age. It was originally released in 1513 but was not widely published and distributed until 1532, five years after Niccolo Machiavelli death. It has both been praised and criticized at various points in history on the pros and cons of this thesis of political tactics. William Shakespeare even used Machiavel to emphasize in Henry VI, how evil GLOUCESTER was: "I can add colors to the chameleon, Change spaces with Proteus for advantages, And set the murderous Machiavel to school" Many counter views have been published over the years. One of the most comprehensive was the Anti–Machiavelli. An 18th–century essay by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia and patron of Voltaire, stated: "Machiavel's advice if followed uncritically be a prince, may lead to real tragedies in the real world". Richard Christie and Florence L Geis even developed and named a psychological test to reflect an aspect of a person's character, the Machiavelli test ("MACH–IV: Machiavellianism Test"). This is to test for one of the "Dark Triad Personality", the others being narcissism and psychopathy. The Oxford English Dictionary described Machiavellian as "duplicitous interpersonal style, a cynical disregard for morality, and a focus on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Niccolo Machiavelli And Socrates Two of history's greatest political philosophers, Niccolo Machiavelli and Socrates, have very profound, yet contrasting beliefs on how a prince should assume and make use of their power. Not only do the two disagree over how someone with authority over a state should rule, but their contrasting beliefs regarding the fundamental values of society, such as honesty and liberty, expose just how different the political mentalities of the two enlightened thinkers are. According to Plato, Socrates' core beliefs are founded on the preservation of truth, maintenance of justice, and the importance of wisdom among all members of society. Socrates, who's idealistic set of values focuses on the importance of justice and wisdom, forbids any unjust actions taken by a prince solely to maintain his power. On the contrary, Machiavelli's ideal prince is cunning, deceiving, and strategic, taking any action necessary to maintain his authority and the prestige of his state. Therefore, Socrates would vehemently oppose the unjust actions taken by Machiavelli's ideal prince to preserve power, being that his values of honesty and morality would be unreservedly disobeyed. Moreover, Socrates would disapprove of any political system in which the prince stands by, and takes action in adherence to, Machiavellian values, or lack thereof. Machiavelli's beliefs on doing good vastly differs from that of Socrates, who lives his life in pursuit of truth, understanding, and a perfect soul, rather than reputation and honor (Apology, 29e). Instead of valuing honesty and morality, Machiavelli believes that men who have authority over a state are justified in taking any action necessary, even murder, to maintain their power. He argues that men are naturally poor decision makers, and almost always let conscience lead them into making detrimental decisions. Machiavelli argues that "anyone who abandons what is, for what should be, pursues his downfall rather than his preservation" (Prince p.62). This quote Austin Hanover GVPT 241 0105 Paper 1 10/13/17 2 shows that Machiavelli views the concept of truth not as something that is necessary among all men, like Socrates does, but as an action that should sometimes be avoided by a prince, because it often ... • 3. Niccolo Machiavelli And Saint Augustine Niccolo Machiavelli and Saint Augustine differ greatly in their views and opinions on how one should act towards another in regards to compassion and Charity. Augustine was a theologian who came to light at the time of the collapse of the Roman Empire. Augustine's views were heavily dependent on his Christian beliefs and perspective as well as believing there are two realms that interact with each other; the material realm, and the immaterial realm. In contrast, Machiavelli, who was an Italian philosopher from the renaissance, had a much different cynical view on how one should treat others. Machiavelli's beliefs on compassion and charity demonstrate the absence of what one would consider Christian like behavior as well as not seeing a distinction between the heavenly realm and the earthly realm, a direct contrast to Augustine's Christian beliefs. Augustine and Machiavelli both had very different ideas when it came to virtues. Machiavelli believed you could not stay in power by sticking to virtues by stating "It is necessary for a prince who wishes to maintain his position to learn how to be able not to be good" (Machiavelli, 72). Machiavelli did not believe human nature was naturally righteous and held humans who were not in power to a low standard with little respect. According to Machiavelli, although he somewhat values a man's word, he is more of a proponent on being deceptive as he believes it is the one's who have been deceptive that have accomplished the most. • 4. Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Summary The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Niccolo Machiavelli was the first to clearly decipher politics from ethics by studying politics in such depth and thought. He created the basis of what politics should be and how they are runned for today. His book The Prince is primarily a handbook for all rulers to follow to be the most successful in their reign. His book is considered political realism which means he speaks about only the truth of politics, so it can be used for the practice of governing. Machiavelli's book is the handbook for obtaining and maintaining power even for today's modern politics. Obtaining power is one of the most important ways to either become a ruler or gaining the right to rule. But, in today's politics the president is already in power so he doesn't have to gain much more. Machiavelli lays out 3 ways to obtain power in chapter 5. "The first is the destroy it...who will keep the rest your friends." (Machiavelli, pg. 11). In today's government we don't go out destroying countries to add to our land but about 500 years ago we would go to war to obtain the control of whatever space we wanted in the US. Way two is what the president does today which is live in the US since he is in control of it. Lastly, the president will probably never do the third way which is leave his country to live under another country's rule to become friends. "Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved." (Machiavelli). This quote Machiavelli strongly believes in goes over the extent of the president today. No one running or currently president wants to be known as the evil one or someone who is feared by many. They want to be loved by many to win the votes but they also need to have a backbone so they don't have other countries stepping all over them. But, this quote can be seen used by bad rulers in history and even today. One example is Hitler, he rose to power and was feared by many especially the people he targeted. He was able to obtain power so quickly because the Germans trusted him since being drilled to Heil Hitler at such a young age. Obtaining power back then is way over the extent to how the government today gains their power. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Corrado Vivanti's Niccolo Machiavelli: A Portrait Corrado Vivanti's riveting book, Niccolo Machiavelli: an Intellectual Biography, translated into English in 2013 posthumously, offers exactly what the title states. While his main focus lies with Machiavelli's republican ideas, he still manages to fit in a minute discussion of Machiavelli's religion. For the most part, Vivanti's Machiavelli strongly dislikes the church. Machiavelli believed that religion proved necessary for determining morality and customs, "but ancient religions were more suited than Christianity" Yet again, similar in fashion to many of the other historians, Machiavelli describes Christianity as weak and the cause for all the problems of Rome. However, "religion is not intended as an individual feeling; its deepest essence consists of the ability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Celenza,'s book, Machiavelli: A Portrait, offers an account of Machiavelli's life, placing Machiavelli within the context of his time. His depiction of Machiavelli's religion proves interesting as well. Machiavelli mentions God throughout all of his works, however, God, Celenza argues, remains unimportant to Machiavelli. Celenza denies the possibility of Machiavelli as an atheist because that identity did not exist in that time period. Celenza's Machiavelli uses irony extensively in regards to God and the church, especially targeting ecclesiastical princedoms. Part of the issue regarding Christianity for Machiavelli lay with the "disorder" and power in Rome. The Papacy, inherently corrupt at this point, "have states and do not defend them, have subjects and do not govern them." Not only did Machiavelli find fault in the Church, but also with Christians. Like many of the other authors, Celenza points out Machiavelli's argument that the Christians exalted humility, the fact that life on earth represented only a transitory pilgrimage. Christianity garners criticism from Machiavelli for not striving for strength or power, men of action are needed to keep the city–state from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Chapter Summaries A Summary and Analysis of The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli, is a novel describing how to acquire, rule, and build up a nation. Essentially, the novel acts as a "how to" guide instructing the reader on the steps it takes to build an everlasting empire. The novel itself is directed towards prince Lorenzo de' Medici, who took over Italy in December of 1469 after his father, Piero, passed away. In the novel, Machiavelli includes many pieces of information, which he believes are completely true in hopes that one–day Italy will be saved. To prove his point throughout the book, Machiavelli incorporates many historical facts about previous mistakes that other rulers have made. He uses historical examples from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the novel, the author is consistently able to tie in all of the "rules" to being a successful leader together in his historically accurate peripheral narrative that was written over 500 years ago. Unlike the popular view that many historians share concerning the "innovative" book, The Prince, one historian thinks differently. Paul Sonnino is a professor at the University of California Los Angeles. Sonnino is known for studying and teaching Early Modern European History as well as Historiography. Currently he is working on several books, essays and articles, many of which deal with postmodern topics. One historical analysis that he is known for is his view of the popular book by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince. When asked in an interview for The UC Santa Barbara Current what he thought of the prince, his response shocked many readers, and threw a new theory into the mix about what Machiavelli really meant. • 7. Lao-Tzu And The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli While Thoughts From The Tao–te Ching by Lao–Tzu and The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli are both pieces of work that serve as ground rules or guidelines for a ruler on how to rule a country, the two authors' prepositions vary tremendously. One author takes on a susceptible viewpoint, while another takes on a much more conservative outlook. There are many factors as to why they differ so much. Even though Lao–Tzu and Machiavelli both provide intricate structures as to how rulers should run their state, there are extreme differences between the two. The most obvious difference between Lao–Tzu and Machiavelli are their moral perspectives and beliefs. Lao–Tzu is very mellow and easygoing person. He believes that the best government is one that runs itself, in the sense that the government should have very little control. Lao–Tzu is very passive. In his section titled Thoughts of the Tao–te Ching, Lao–Tzu says, "The world is sacred. It can't be improved. If you tamper with it, you'll ruin it. If you treat it like an object, you'll lose it" (208). This quote strengthens the claim that Lao–Tzu believes in a government with little control. This is most accredited to his religion. He is a person of the Tao, and he is very reliant on the 'Master', or the god of Taoism. He believes that the Master controls everything, yet does nothing in the sense that people hardly are aware that the Master exists. Because of his knowledge of the Tao and the expectations of the Master, Lao–Tzu ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Reflection Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Sophia Diane G. Daroya 11435933 The Prince is one of the greatest work of the famous Niccolo Machiavelli. It talks about how to sustain and to obtain political power. In this book, he explained the different principalities such as the hereditary, religious, use of power and others. He also mentioned the characteristics of the prince must possess. This novel focuses on being a leader. It's not all about in a good way but also in a bad way. It's very different on other novels we know in being a leader which everything is all about being good. Machiavelli wants to point out that people cannot commit in being a good all the time because at the end they might just fail. I believe that he wrote this book not only to mention all things about a leader but also for the people to relate it in real life situation. There are different messages he brought to the people for them to learn something such as strategies, characteristic, and more. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Otherwise, if he's hated by the people, this might cause his downfall. He can be cruel but at least he has to show goodwill to his people for him to ensure his reign. Still, he has to make sure that he will be loved by doing things that will make people happy. This is a good strategy to remain your power because people will not hate you if you show them that you're not someone who should be hated, instead you're someone who should be respected because of good things you do for them. • 9. Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince Summary The book The Prince by Machiavelli was written by him for an essential "guide" to ruling, but many scholars today argue it is more of an idea of how to rule. Niccolo Machiavelli was born May 3, 1469. He was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, and writer in the Renaissance period. The prince takes place around Renaissance Italy and the Florentine Republic roughly in the years 1400–1600. Machiavelli starts the book by dedicating it to the magnificent Lorenzo Di Piero De' Medici who was a very powerful statesman of the Florentine Republic who had ruled with his brother (Britannica Encyclopedia). Something that really stood out to me in this dedication passage was that Machiavelli talks about how "he can offer no better gift than the means of mastering in a very brief time, all that in the course of so many year," (vii) and by this he means his gift of knowledge. Earlier on in the dedication section he discussed how people leave gold, armor, horses, etc. In this scenario knowledge being the greatest gift he can give out triumphs materialistic items. In the first couple chapters of The Prince it talks about principalities of being a prince, while also discussing the main point of the book, which includes power politics and warcraft to say the least. For pretty much the rest of the book it discusses advantages and disadvantages of different routes toward power, how to acquire states, make alliances, and eventually talks about violence and cruelty. • 10. Summary Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Sustaining Power In 1513, Niccolo Machiavelli wrote "The Prince," in which he discussed the characteristics that qualify a leader to have control of his people. Machiavelli claimed that a leader ought to associate with vices that have a positive impact to his rulings to avoid embarrassment, thus building a strong leadership. This claim is policy because it delivers the message of ruling. Machiavelli's audiences are former rulers or anyone aspiring to become a leader. Machiavelli uses logos appeal to support his claim. One example of his logos support is when he states that a prince, or anyone seeking power, should ignore peoples' opinions. Machiavelli uses this logo to pass the message that being so good to others and giving them clemency can result negative in reign. This is a concise fact on how to rule during those eras, where there were no laws and orders in the society, yet the leaders needed to uphold their reign. Another logo applied in the passage is when he states that sometimes it is better to create fear on people than for them to love their leader. Some people are imposters or hard to convince, thus creating fear, and being brutal to them will be easier for a leader to control. Through the application of such logic, the author is able to provide that sometimes you have to be tough on the people to impose your rules. Machiavelli uses pathos to support his claim. An example of pathos is when he states that when a leader is with his army, he has to avoid being cruel. By doing this, he can be able to keep his army with him. This is an example of pathos since it creates compassion so they can be united and will not make anyone feel attacked or not needed. This statement helps convince the former rulers, or aspiring to be, that on some occasions you have to back away from being feared and lean towards compassion. It will allow your people to trust you. Another example of pathos is when Machiavelli states that friendship cannot be relied on though situations, especially when that friendship was won by favors. This support is ethos because it creates fear and makes people aware that they cannot trust one another. This helps convince the leaders that it is important to be aware that most of the time people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Chapter 17 Of The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Niccolo Machiavelli is clear and concise in his work The Prince. He reveals some of the cold hard truths about people of power and human nature in general. The principles, although may seem outdated and irrelevant in today's society, they are very much apart of the world we live in today. One point that Machiavelli elaborates on in Chapter 17 of The Prince is, "Is it better to be loved than feared?" He believes that "it is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both", but why? (Machiavelli) In Chapter 17, Machiavelli believes it is safer to be feared than loved because it is a lot easier to control someone, in this case a nation's people, with fear than with love because love comes and goes and is unreliable. Fear however causes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Idealism In The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli In The Prince, originally written in 1513 and later published in 1532, Florentine administrator and diplomat Niccolo Machiavelli argues that a ruler must take appropriate action based upon pragmatism and independence in order to seize and hold power. Based on the circumstances, a ruler must be able to select between contrasting influences: liberality and parsimony, virtue and immorality, prudence and recklessness. The book was very controversial when first published because it contended the Christian ideals that rulers should always be good and just, but the novel is highly acclaimed today. Machiavelli not only proposes a series of revolutionary political ideas in The Prince but also offers a persuasive and masterful defense of them. The base of Machiavelli's guide for rulers is the prevailment of practicality over idealism. The philosopher writes in chapter fifteen, "the way men live is so far removed from the way they ought to live that anyone who abandons what is for what should be pursues his downfall rather than his preservation. . ." (Machiavelli 54). This is a profound statement which still holds true today. People constantly reap benefits from their lack of ethics while the kind ones are left behind. Machiavelli often uses anecdotes from the reign of his contemporary Cesare Borgia to support this. In chapter 7, Machiavelli discusses Borgia's reconciliation of the divided factions in the ruler's newly acquired territory of Romagna. Borgia appointed the tyrannical ... • 13. Niccolo Machiavelli Praised Or Blamed I agree with Niccolo Machiavelli, in his observations and insights on how men (people) are "Praised or Blamed" especially in when the person holds a position of leadership, such as a holding the title of a Prince. The point that Machiavelli draws on is that if a person lives their life neglecting key elements that would keep his core values in check; will eventually met the evil of his own demise that will destroy him. Knowing his own vulnerabilities, and how to restrain himself from falling victim to the available vices will save him from his own ruins. True friendships come without a purchase price, They gift of friendship is earned whereas being feared, there is no respect or friendship. However, being loved Machiavelli prescribes that this is, "Preserved by a link of obligation" (pg. 103). His political theories are directly related to the current bad state of affairs in Italy that is in dire need of a new ruler to help bring order to the country. Some of his philosophies may sound extreme and many people may call him evil, but the truth is that Niccolo Machiavelli's writings are only aimed at fixing the current corruptions and cruelties that filled the Italian community, and has written what he believed to be the most practical and efficient way to deal with it. Machiavelli has another argument "concerning those who become princes by evil means."# He believes that cruelty can also be used to benefit the prince but only in modesty. If a prince frequently relies on cruel acts then he will not live in power for long. Proper use of cruelty is only achieved when it is done "out of the need for safety" and when it is done swiftly as to make sure that the act is quickly forgotten, and the people can return to a feeling of safety.# His idea that cruelty should be swift is excellent, this way the citizens will feel more at ease with there prince, because if he were to drag out the atrocities then the people may feel the need to revolt to protect their personal freedoms and civil rights. Many people may think these are evil ideas, but it is completely practical, during Machiavelli's era (and even today) a prince will always face a moment in this rule that he will have to act in a cruel manner, in no way is this statement cruel it is just a practical way of dealing with a inevitable situation. Essay about Niccolo Machiavelli According to legend, just before his death, Niccolo Machiavelli told his friends that had remained faithful to him up until the very end about a dream he had had. Then he saw a crowd of formally attired men, aristocratic and grim in appearance, speaking solemnly of important political matters. Again, he asked them who they were and where they were going. The government was so corrupt and was comprised of several independently operated city–states. What further complicated matters was that this is where the pope lived. He was leader of the Catholic Church, controlled his own territory, and had more influence than any prince of any of the other city–states in Italy. Machiavelli was suspected of being an enemy of Medici and was thrown into prison until he was able to prove his innocence. These were the circumstances which inspired him to write The Prince. In The Prince by Niccolo Machiaveli, the prince in which it was so aptly named, securities were entirely dependent on his reputation among his citizens. His methods used to maintain order and peace in his kingdom are still acknowledged by politicians of modern society. That being said, his reasoning behind his actions was not out of a desire to serve the public, but to preserve his seat of power and authority. Today, The Prince is commonly used to educate readers on how political power can corrupt officials as well as the many adverse effects it has on the government. The underlying reason is that it shows strength and power. People are more inclined to obey when a leader has the qualities to bring repercussions if an order isn't followed. • 19. Niccoló Machiavelli: Fear or Love Machiavelli: Fear or Love? Niccoló Machiavelli's The Prince is a book of political philosophy that describes the perfect leader in a republican fourm of government, the very form used in American society today. Machiavelli explains what qualities the ideal "prince" should have as well as how he should go about conducting his business. Although both qualtites would be desirable, he argues that if the prince were to choose between being feared or loved by his people, the prince should choose fear. While living under fear is not ideal, it is true that the feared prince is a better leader than a loved prince. Love and fear are two completely different emotions that bring out the best and the worst in everyone. In The Prince, Machiavelli asks us, "Is it better to be loved than feared, or the reverse?" He tells us that a combination of the two would be the best, but that it is almost impossible to have both. Thus he concludes that "since men love at their own choice and fear at the prince's choice, a wise prince takes care to base himself on what is his own." In other words, a smart leader knows that if power is awarded based on love, power can be taken away just as easily if people fall out of love with you. But, if people fear the prince, the power is held in his hands. While living under fear is not ideal, Machiavelli believes a prince creating fear is better than letting murder and other criminal activities continue under your power. However, a prince must be sure not to incite hatred against him. Should a prince steal property or a man's wife, he will be hated and from this he loses the trust of citizens. • 30. Political Philosophy Of Niccolo Machiavelli Introduction: Niccolo Machiavelli's seminal work The Prince was a seismic shift away from the tradition of political philosophy as espoused by the likes of Plato and Aristotle. Renaissance Italy was a tremendous era of human advancement, but also a deeply unstable one, with wars and tyranny ravaging the Italian peninsula. Due to the nature of the political climate that Machiavelli was living in, his political doctrine would have to be of a different nature than Plato's idealistic focus on virtue, and in turn become more "grounded" in reality than some of his predecessors. Consequently, it is unfair to label his prescriptions for the contemporary ruler as immoral, as his focus was on ensuring the quality governance of the states of Italy. While some of the means to ensure this stability could be deemed cruel and an abuse of power, for him the ends justify the means, and the requirement of the sporadic use of immoral methods to help end the instability that plagued the lives of innocents is a price worth paying. The World of Machiavelli: When individuals think of the Italian Renaissance, what often first comes to mind are the works of artists such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Few however, consider the tumultuous state of Italian politics. Due to just how influential contemporary politics were on Machiavelli's political philosophy, it is of the utmost importance to have a basic understanding of Italy's history prior to The Prince's publication. The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Summary Niccolo Machiavelli's abstract work of The Prince discusses politics and government and focuses in not only acquiring power, but also how to maintain it. Throughout his work, one of the most prevalent yet disputed themes is between the acquirement of states between principalities and republics. The Prince shows a predominant and constant debate on which group will excel in acquiring power. However, despite Machiavelli's harsh criticisms on principalities, his work does not solely praise or focus on the excellence of republics. In fact, as Machiavelli continues to speak and provide examples about the successes and failures of both republics and principalities, it becomes clearer that the lone purpose of The Prince is to merely provide tactics in political governance, instruction on how to maintain power once it is acquired, and most importantly, advice on how to become a great leader. One of the most prevalent themes found in Machiavelli's The Prince is the theme of fortune. Machiavelli, though in disguise, focuses on the theme of fortune in chapter four and explains how it plays a heavy role in acquiring power. Chapter four begins in introducing states ruled by a prince with barons and states ruled by a prince with appointed ministers, and continues by distinguishing the similarities and differences between the two groups. For states ruled by a prince with hereditary barons, Machiavelli claims that power is easier to acquire as the prince receives help in conquering the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He claims that the skillful mercenary will always aim to be just above the ruler, and will often end in overthrowing them as they have their own ambitions, while an unskilled mercenary will fail you in the usual manner. Counting on the own wit and war knowledge of the ruler himself, if they have studied war tactics very little and seldom needed to play either defense or offense, they will find themselves not prepared in the time of war and will fail. In conclusion, the dystopian society would rely heavily on the hope that they would not be attacked and would have little to no preparation in the area of war, while if they found themselves to be in such a situation, would rely on buying their own soldiers who could potentially overthrow them at any off chance.
