Working As An Intern For Placer Times
Working as an intern for Placer Times, a major newspaper company in Addis Ababa, Africa, I am
here to have my voice heard. I grew up in a big city where no one had a car. We either walked, took
trams, or subways. At age 16, I got my first job two blocks from my house writing magazine
articles. Ever since then, I have been interning at big news paper companies in big cities all around
the world. I have traveled to many cities, reporting local news and thus never really got a chance to
settle down. I am currently 24 years old and living in a three–bedroom apartment with two other
women in the heart of Addis Ababa, Africa. Much like San Francisco, this city is over–crowded,
contains too many tourists, and its beautiful views are being ... Show more content on

The man had no ID on him, so the officers could not identify who he was. The body of this man was
never clamed. He was named "Victim 001." 001 represented the "unknown" future victims that
might come from other autonomous car accidents. Although these autonomous cars can drive
themselves, the occupant still has the responsibility to press the emergency break when necessary.
Chris Rodriquez, the occupant of the car in this instance, had just gotten his masters from UCLA
and was about to pitch his first business deal at his dad's law firm. Living under his dad's
expectations, he knew there was no way to ease the man without having a couple of drinks
beforehand. In this case, having a couple of drinks impaired the twenty–eight–year–old male
occupant's judgment, making him unable to press the emergency break. Therefore, the death of the
pedestrian was the occupant's fault. Mercedes Bens company has been working on making the
perfect autonomous car for the past 13 years. Working to make sure every little detail was detailed
to perfection; Stopping when necessary, making sure the speed was accurate, and installing
emergency breaks to make sure the cars would not get out of control, were Mercedes goals. There
are only a couple hundred of theses two door cars with windows tinted as deep as the ocean, its
engine as loud as thunder, with the exhaust puffing white smoke. Although Mercedes had perfected

The First Wave Of The Dergue's Red Terror
When the Dergue, a commission of approximately 120 military officers, surmised leadership, it
abolished Parliament, suspended the Constitution and captured Emperor Haile Selassie and former
members of the imperial authorities for alleged malefactors against the Ethiopians. All land,
institutions and industries were nationalized. During the initial transmutation, the Dergue still highly
respected the revolution's slogan "without blood;" overall the transition was relatively made no
casualties and was peaceful. However, great power conflict within the incipient ruling elite led to
the elevate of a new leader, Mengistu Haile Mariam, and the phrase phrasal idiom "without blood"
was soon forgotten. Following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie, Superior general Aman
Andom led the Dergue government. However, in November ... Show more content on

Even if an individual were young and even insignificantly educated, that was much of the time
enough evidence to show that they were incorporated into counter revolutionary activities. The
result was that no under 2500 young people alone were killedin the midst of the first wave.
Moreover, countless, women, and children were bound. According to Human Rights Watch report,
an extensive segment of these prisoners were bound in unspeakable conditions, squeezed by the
hundreds into airless, dull storm cellars, where they could hear the yells of those being tormented
while they expected torure themselves. Many of those executed were basically left by the roadside
with Red Terror slogon joined to their bodies to startle political opponents.Equally stunning is that
the familes of those killed or missing were every now and again required to pay the assembly for the
shot used to kill the relative before the body would be released for internment. By mid 1977,

While the efforts on Transport are admirable, especially acknowledging your previous experience as

I. Understanding the urban environmental challenges in Addis Ababa
A. Characteristics and development of the city
Addis Ababa, one of the oldest and largest cities in Africa, was founded as the capital of Ethiopia in
1886 when Menelik II became the Emperor of Ethiopia (Bjerkil, 2013; UN–HABITAT, 2008).
Following its foundation, the city has seen an important era of modernisation and increase in
population size. In fact, according to Pankurst (1961), Emperor Menelik attempted to forge
something new in Ethiopia's history by joining modern institutions and traditional way of life.
Although the city lacked many characteristics of a 20th century capital such as municipalities, it put
in place the foundations for the development of a modern state that started to impact the traditional
structure of the country. At that time, Addis Ababa had the great potential in offering a beautiful and
healthy environment for its habitants, with its topography, agricultural land and simple ways

My Experience At The United States
As I saw Ethiopia, after ten long years I could not recognize my country. I was shocked and
overwhelmed with pride. The buildings from the plane looked as if I was in a different place. Surely
there could not have been this much done in ten years. To my dismay, I found that to be true. Yes,
there were many buildings but there they were children, mothers, disabled citizens of my country
laying at the bottom of these buildings, just as I left them. My heart could never get used to seeing
this not even when i lived there, but now I felt my chest caving in.
I came from the world that is far from which I live in now. My friends were not as fortunate as me
as they lived on the streets of Addis Ababa Ethiopia. They had more responsibilities than most
adults in the USA. Many of my friends and family were not in school regularly and had to work at a
very young age. I remember many stories that still give me goosebumps when I think of them. I
lived thru the AIDS epidemic as well as many droughts in Ethiopia where many of my friends lost
their families and their homes. Reflecting on what things shaped me to be so driven I think would
these very trying times for my people would have to be it. I always wondered why I was blessed and
fortunate enough to live in a stable household when my friends were suffering so badly. I knew that
I had to push for their sake and not take my life and opportunities for granted.

Ethiopian Cultural Identity
1. What is your chosen group background? What has it meant to belong to this group? As you know,
I am Ethiopian. I was born and raised in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. I belong to the Ethiopian
community not only in Ethiopia, but also here in America. Finding Ethiopian friends who share the
same interest as me, understand their culture, practice their languages, and have interest in returning
back to Ethiopia someday, has always been a struggle for me. Most of the Ethiopians who I meet are
Americanized. When I was studying at NIU, I was blessed to have a small circle of Ethiopians who
grew up there. Spending time with me made me feel secure, like I actually belonged. Lucky for me,
I am also a part of the African community. There are 53 countries in Africa; however, there is an
unbreakable bond that is seen amongst Africans around the world. We share the same identity and
have the upmost love and respect for our continent and the people still living there. 2. Where did
you grow up and what other groups resided there? How did this early personal history influence
your beliefs of others I lived in Ethiopia for quite some time before given a chance to move to
America. When I arrived in America, the only people that were around me were Caucasians. They
did not look like me or act like me. I found this very difficult when I first came to America. I was
jealous of my classmates because they spoke clear English, they had cars to get them to and from
school, and they had nicer clothes

Ethiopia's Red Terror
Primary Sources:
Abebe, Belay. "Mengistu's Red Terror." Personal interview. 11 Oct. 2016.
The interview with Belay Abebe provided a first person experience of what happened during the
Ethiopian Red Terror. Throughout the interview, Abebe answered questions that provided insight on
how Mengistu took control of the Ethiopian government, cruel things that Derg did to citizens, and
personal encounters with the party themselves. Abebe stated that the Red Terror originally occurred
because Derg had forcefully switched Ethiopia to a communist state, and in the process of doing so,
they took away land and businesses away from the citizens. Because of this, many of the Ethiopian
citizens started to peaceful protest against the government. Abebe states ... Show more content on

The Pros And Cons Of The Organization Of African Union
Introduction
Africa is the second largest continent in the world in terms of area and population after Asia.
Because of European colonialism, the exploitation of its resources, the practice of apartheid and the
policy of prejudice, the Organization of the African Union was established and linked to all African
countries. The concept of the African Union is a special organization to resolve all African
problems, issues and crises. The African Union consists of 30 countries, established in 1936. In
1980, the membership rose to 53. The Organization of African Unity has been named .The

Personal Narrative : What Is An Unforgettable?
I often wonder what makes a travel experience truly unforgettable. Take my recent trip to Georgia
(the country) for instance. When our plans to travel to the remote Tusheti region got snowed on, we
decided to visit a forgotten protected reserve near Georgia's border with Azerbaijan and the
Dagestan province of Russia. I was recovering from a flu, and even on a sunny day, wrapped up in
layers and a warm hat. "Cold?" Otto, our potbellied, jolly Georgian host asked me. I solemnly
nodded. He turned to search for something in the shelves of his outdoor kitchen shed. I tried to tell
him I had already taken medicine, but he wouldn't stop. He finally found what he was looking for. A
bottle of homemade chacha – a strong plum liquor ubiquitous in Georgian households. "Chacha
very good," he said, even as I resisted it at first. Then we cheered to India, Georgia, family, religion
(even if mine is atheism) and good health, and downed shot after shot. Georgia airbnb, airbnb tips,
shivya nath With my Georgian host Otto. I guess the flu, hiking to the waterfalls in the protected
reserve, my friend's tumble into a glacial river and all the homemade jams we ate for breakfast will
gradually fade away in my memory. But I'll never forget sitting in that little shed by the garden,
surrounded by grape and plum vines, the warm sunlight pouring in through cracks in the tin roof,
drinking chacha with Otto. So if you ask me, the most unforgettable travel experiences are the ones

Life Of Ethiopia Vs Life During The Usa
Life in Ethiopia vs life in the USA
Did you ever visit Ethiopia and observed peoples' life there? Life in Ethiopia is completely different
from life in the USA. There are many difficulties in Ethiopia and some of them are poverty,
education and health are some of the problems. Even though there are some problems in America
they are not like the problems in Ethiopia.
Majority of the people in Ethiopia are suffering from poverty. In Ethiopia there is no enough food
and people cannot feed their families easily. All of these poverty problems are related to backward
agriculture and drought. Agriculture is one of the basic source of food and people depend on the
agricultural products in Ethiopia, but it is very back ward and farmers are still using oxen and horses
to cultivate the land. This is why farmers cannot produce enough and their work is from hand to
mouth. Agriculture in Ethiopia depends on the rain, therefore if there is no enough rain there is no
enough food. These are some of the agricultural problems in Ethiopia.
I believe education, is very important thing to break the cycle of poverty and make people life easier
but in Ethiopia lack of enough and quality education facilities, shortage of highly qualified teachers
and lack of a job after graduation made people life difficult more than anyone can imagine.
In Ethiopia, there is a shortage of quality built schools all over the state. In rural part of the state, the
schools are built far kilometers away from where

The map shows that the expansion of the city from 1984–2006 for about 20 years indicated in
yellow and green colors is smaller than the expansion of the city from 2006 –2016 in the past 10
years. The expansion of built–up area in 2016 is very special in that it covered the study area wall to
wall and increased by a large amount of land which indicates rapid and unprecedented urban growth
of the city consuming the surrounding non–built–up areas. This type of urban growth is a typical
urban sprawl increasing in all direction. Fig 4.1 Land–use types of Addis Ababa city and

Analysis Of Moving Shadows II By Girma Berta
In his collection of works, Moving Shadows II, Girma Berta uniquely combines photographs of
people on the street of his home city, Addis Ababa, with digital editing to contrast the people starkly
with a solid backdrop. His work is primarily presented on Instagram, but recently has been
displayed in showcases in New York. Berta's primary goal when it comes to this collection was to
cause people to "stare into the eyes of Addis Ababa... the beautiful, the ugly and all that is in
between" (Yoseph, 2017). And accomplish that it does. Loving, hard–working, tired, friend, family:
these are the words that immediately come to mind when looking at these pieces on the surface
level. When one looks deeper, though, Berta's work counters dominant Western ideas of Africans as
this unanimous "other" by simply putting these people who aren't always thought about or known
into light. He's taking their shadows and bringing them into the light for the world to see and
understand. By transposing everyday people from the streets of Addis Ababa with solid backdrops,
Berta's work brings their unique stories to life, countering Western ideologies of Africans as tribal,
sexual, and a completely different people. Berta uses his work to tell these people's stories, and just
by showing the variety of people, actions, and lives of these people, he's breaking down the
ideology that Western media presents of all Africans being the same sort of tribal people. By looking
at piece II from the collection, a

Definition of Key terms Streetism: the term "streetism" refers to the situation of children who are
forced to live on the street and who are frequently engaged in unskilled income–generating activities
in order to survive (Adeyemi & Oluwaseun 2012:88). Street children are those who are under 18

Child Labour In Ethiopia Essay
Introduction
Child labour is a very real problem in the world today, and although it is declining, progress is
happening at a slow and unequal pace. Child labour by the International Labour Organization is
defined as "work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that
is harmful to physical and mental development (Diallo, Etienne, & Mehran, 2013, p. 2)." In the
most extreme forms of child labour it could account for child enslavement, separation from their
families, exposure to serious hazards and illnesses and being left to fend for themselves on the
streets (Dinopoulos & Zhao, 2007). In order for certain types of work to be included as "child
labour" depends on the child's age, the type of work, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To further my argument I will use Ethiopia as a case study to show how globalization has provided
the push for countries to acknowledge the problem of child labour and create actions to fix it. This
paper will be divided as follows: firstly I will provide a brief background on child labour in the
world; secondly I will provide the situation in Ethiopia; thirdly I will present the actions that the
government has placed to combat child labour in accordance with my argument; lastly, I will give
my recommendations regarding the implications of the actions of the Ethiopian government.
Child Labour in the World Today
In 2008, there were approximately 215 million child labourers, aged 5–17, in the world. According
to the International Labour Organization, the number of child labourers globally fell by 3% from the
years of 2004–2008 which is slower in comparison to the 2000–2004 period that had an 11%
decrease (Diallo, Etienne, & Mehran, 2013).There has also been a 15% decrease in the number of
girls in child labour in contrast to boys who are having their work increase (United Nations, 2013).
Among them, 115 million children were in hazardous work which includes: prostitution, agriculture,
mining, militia, construction, manufacturing, service industries, hotels, bars, and domestic service
(Cigno, Rosati, & Guarcello, 2002). The terms "hazard" and "risk" are often used with this type of

Internship Experience Report (May–August) 2016
INTRODUCTION
This document contains the report of my internship period conducted at the Committee of
Intelligence & Security Services of Africa and at the Peace and Security Council in the African
Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the time period: May 20– August 1st. During my internship at
the African Union, I was focused on different on going issues in African but what interested me the
most was areas in conflict prevention and the relationship between social media and African
governments. I favored these topics because currently there are about 29 ongoing border disputes
within Africa, which could have been possibly prevented with better border conflict prevention
strategies. Many African governments view social media as a threat as citizens have used it as
method of demonstration. Is social media complicating peacekeeping for governments?
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
This internship report is divided into four main sections.
The first section gives a general introduction of the internship institution I was hosting at during my
internship period. The second section provides an overview of the internship in practice and the

Cheating on exams has become a popular phenomenon all over the world regardless of the levels of
development. For instance, Baerthlein (2008), from Germany, described that over the past decade,
cheating has become more and more common as an act of academic dishonesty. Referring to the
latest statistics she expressed her concern on the alarming rate as more than two thirds of high

A life of distress and terror lead the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia to start a protest movement for
their rights and faced critical challenges within it. The ethiopian government needs to end cracking

different. The Ethiopian government has a blueprint to expand the lands in the capital, sounds like a
great idea for the counties eco and a profitable goal but that plan comes to contact with the Oromos
treasured land and coastline. News and protest broke out, placing the Oromos in a position of scares
from the government but also help them put their position spread in Ethiopia and America. Ethiopia

four and have family and friends from all corners of Ethiopia so I am in a position to defend all
including the Oromos and anyone who comes to conflict with this issue. The Ethiopian government
is using savagery action and targeting Oromos for their better good which is leading the Oromos to
lose their rights as citizens of the country. Thus making it wrongful and injustice for the people of
Oromo and the government needs to stop the trouble it 's causing. The Oromos and Amharas have
experienced hatred and discrimination when they were colonized in the 1900's and violence grew

Causes Of Homelessness
Nyigwo Gota
Professor Will Ross English 50246 November 2017. Stigmatization toward Homeless community
Homelessness is one of the chronic condition that affected poor people around the world which is
characterized by not being able to acquire a place to live in and called it home. People who are
affected by this normally lives under bridges, by the roadside in the tiny house made of the
cardboard boxes, near the dumpsters, in the tents, by bus stations, train station, hospital lobbies,
public libraries and so on. It is a kind of condition which happen to individual over time due to
various causes. To finding a solution and to tackle it is quite challenging once you became
homeless. Some people might find a way out after period with help from others, like government,
relatives, NGO (charities organization) and some good Samaritans. In fact, Homelessness varies
from country to country and it also differs from state to state.
Homeless people are not bad folks at all, it is only that they have no access to basic necessities like
house/apartment, enough food, clothing and proper medical care. These people were once like
ordinary people and had various kinds of jobs either under government or private companies
depending on the area they lived. To mention, few were laborers, highly trained soldiers who had
dedicated their lives on the line of duty, teachers or college/university instructors who had instructed

Self Reflection Paper
Self–Reflection: I am Ethiopian. I was born and raised in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. I belong to the
Ethiopian community, not only in Ethiopia but also here in America. Finding Ethiopian friends who
share the same interests as me, understand our culture, fluent in our languages, and plan on
returning back to Ethiopia someday, has always been a struggle for me. Most of the Ethiopians who
I meet are Americanized. When I was studying at Northern Illinois university, I was blessed to have
a small circle of Ethiopians who grew up there. Spending time with them made me feel secure like I
actually belonged. Lucky for me, I am also a part of the African community. There are 54 countries
in Africa; however, there is an unbreakable bond amongst Africans around the world. We share the
same identity and have the utmost love and respect for our continent and the people living there. I
lived in Ethiopia for quite some time before given a chance to move to America. When I arrived in
America, the only people that were around me were Caucasians. They did not look like me or act
like me. I found this very difficult when I first came to America. I was jealous of my classmates
because they spoke clear English, they had cars to get them to and from school, and they had nicer
clothes than me. This exposure at such a young age was difficult. Because I spent many years in
Ethiopia with people who looked just like me and acted like me, this taught me how different
everyone really is.

My Personal Perspective On The Person I Am
The person I am has been shaped by all the people and circumstances I have come across in my life.
My background has had one of the biggest impacts on my personality and my future aspirations.
Growing up in an Ethiopian–Canadian household gave me a unique perspective on the world around
me. My parents emigrated from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the early 90s. Their firsthand experience
living in a developing country provided me with insight into the issues facing the developing world.
This sparked my passion for international development. My background has developed my world
view, impacted my aspirations, and has shaped me into the person I am today.
Having Ethiopian–Canadian parents has broadened my horizon and has made me a global citizen. I
have been fortunate to be exposed to different ways of life and various cultures. This has prevented
me from living solely in the bubble of Toronto, and has allowed me to appreciate the diversity that
the world has to offer. Through my parents' stories and my own trips to Ethiopia, I have seen how
different yet beautiful other cultures can be. Despite the obvious differences between Canada and
Ethiopia, both countries have aspects that are endearing. I love how walking down any street in
Toronto I can pass an array of different restaurants and shops boasting different cuisines from all
around the world. I also enjoy the all the conveniences that are available in a developed country.
When visiting Ethiopia the biggest thing that stands

In this respect, the submit calls for countries to plan and implement appropriate policies and
strategies to ensure UPE for all children by 2015. Achieving the goal of UPE by 2015 requires not
only children are in school but also complete primary education. Furthermore, the MDGs require
development agencies and developed countries to re–affirm their commitment to provide financial
and technical assistance to poor countries to implement these plans.
2 Statement of the problem
The compressive nature of MDGs, targets and indicators pose several problems as well as
opportunity for the countries that embraced them and Ethiopia is also one of them. For the last many
decades Ethiopia is characterized by higher level of poverty prevalence, poor access for education,
health, water supply and sanitation. In the recent years there are some improvements regarding
reduction of poverty, access to education and health. Especially the education sector is in rapid
growth than ever before. The MDGs regarding education requires that there should be full primary
enrolment and elimination of gender disparity in primary and secondary education. Despite rapid
expansion of primary enrollment in Ethiopia, many children continue to remain behind normal
schooling progress. According to the Ministry of Education the Current national figures indicate that

The director suspended me from school for a year. He also wrote, "Awel is a bad student" on my

business. After a year, my father advised me to go back school and to be patience from any

After I started, I was discriminated by the same director until he moved to another state. As my

Sociologists define culture as "the ways of thinking, the ways of acting, and the material objects that
together form a people's way of life" (Macionis 40); but when and how are cultures developed? A
society's values and beliefs derived from their people's ancestry, their economy or way of living in
relation to their physical environment, and political situation all play active roles in forming a
society's culture. In addition, local variables alone do not develop a society's culture in the modern

Essay About My Generation
As the world changes and evolves, so do we. My generation is vastly different from my mother's.
She was born in the late 70's in Ethiopia, and she stayed there for 30 years. The government was
very corrupt, in the sense that they treated a particular group better than the rest. So her
opportunities were limited and she could only do certain things. The government also limited access
to technology. This meant Ethiopia experienced a gap in technological advancements from the rest
of the world. People would acquire dvd players, mp3 player and mobile phones 6–10 years after
they were released. Whereas in the United States or other first world countries they have immediate
access. Therefore, they had limited knowledge of how to use technology. In Ethiopia, you take a test
the determines what your career will be, whereas in the U.S. you can follow your dreams. My
mother knew that's not the life she wanted for me, so she sacrificed her own future so mine can
prosper. In 2007, when I was 7, I came with my mother to the United States . Before we left my
mother was enrolled in Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. One semester was all she had left
before she could graduate and get a degree. But she sacrificed her own future so I could have a
brighter childhood than she had. When we got to the U.S. it was hard because she knew English, but
not well enough to get a high paying job. Therefore, we shared a house with my uncle and 3 other
families in Springfield, Virginia, to avoid the hefty cost of living alone. Unlike my mother, when I
came here it wasn't hard for me to adjust to the language because they made us study English in
Ethiopia. During school back in Ethiopia, all the student were required to speak, read and write
english in school. If you refused you would get scolded, then hit. Westernization was not important
in Ethiopia during my mother's generations but now it has become an important part of Ethiopian
education. When I came to the U.S. the culture was difficult to adjust to , but it was better for me
than it was for my mom because I had a good grasp of the language. During my 10 years in the
U.S., technology has evolved and we have seen great accomplishments and advancements. Unlike

Interview Paper : Urban Conflict And Peacebuilding
Briefing paper: Urban Conflict and Peacebuilding
Over the Global South, urban areas are developing at a remarkable pace. Vast parts of these urban
centres are situated in fragile states emerging out of conflicts. Thus, it is of critical significance to
understand the particulars of violent cities and what strategies is viable in avoiding conflicts and
making peace in urban space.
Introduction
Urban centres are presently developing at a remarkable rate across the developing countries.
Individuals are relocating into urban centres more than ever. The purposes behind this development
are different: range from economic benefits offered by urbans to depletion of natural resources to
looking for assurance from conflicts. This quick pace of urbanization has prompted fragile urban
situations – urban centres unable for giving required security, basic services, and infrastructures to
an increasing number of inhabitants. It results in urban inhabitants being presented to violence and
instability, destitution, health problems, natural and man–made calamities (de Boer, 2015). To
manage this, consequently, understanding the connection between urbanization and conflicts as well
addressing to the role of urban centres for peace and stability appeared central for various reasons.
First of all, it is important to note that urban centres are key driver of development. In view of that,
urban peacebuilding is appeared crucial as urbans are the epicentres of advancement and crucial for

Is It What It 's Cracked Up?
Is it what it's cracked up to be? From the start of urbanization the belief in many nations all
throughout history has been that cities are where the prosperity of the nation is held. But is this
really a valid argument or does that simply referring to a select few? The urban population has
grown rapidly since 1950 form 746 million to 3.9 billion people as of 2014. Many of these number
exist in North America with 82% of the population living in cities, Europe with 73%, and Latin
America with 80%. Asia and Africa on the other hand are far behind having only 40 – 48% of
population living in urban areas. It is said by the World Bank that "Africa is witnessing an
unprecedented projected population growth of more than 40,000 new urban inhabitants per day
between now and 2040" (Voice of America). Although for some countries population growth as
large as this can be a good thing but in regards to many developing countries that have cities with a
lack of a strong infrastructure, a weak economic hold, lack of a sustainable government, and a poor
quality of life, the population influx could cause a major issue in the progress of development and
therefore make urbanization a highly negative thing if these issues are not properly addressed.
Firstly the definition of what is considered urban and what is considered rural varies from country to
country. Barney Cohen, economic researcher, says that urban communities can be defined in any
number of ways. This is including by population

Causes Of Refugees In Ethiopia
Picture being an Ethiopian refugee and having to flee your homeland that was brutally destroyed,
being ridiculed and persecuted because of your faith and religion, and being forced into working.
People both go to and flee from Ethiopia because they have been through unimaginable things, for
example, refugees have seen war, their family members being persecuted right in front of them, their
government crumbling, and their homes being ripped apart. Ethiopia is one of the largest refugee
hosting nations in the world("Ethiopia is creating 100,000 jobs to tackle its refugee problem"),
people that have had their homes and lives destroyed, had to start a new life, and people that have
been persecuted because of their faith leave and go to Ethiopia to find refuge, but there are many
things we can do to help.
First and foremost, refugees are forced to flee because their homes are being destroyed and because
they were being persecuted because of their religion. When people were asked why they had to flee
their homeland of Ethiopia, more than half responded, " that they left because their homes were
destroyed" ("Refugees Flee Ethiopian Collectivization"). People's homes were being demolished,
their food and farming equipment were being stolen by the militia, and their families were being
taken from them forced to join the militia/ army, are threatened, by their families being killed or
brutally hurt, and turned into killing machines("Refugees Flee Ethiopian Collectivization"). I feel

Hope was so tangible that even the foreign community was living in a heightened sense of
anticipation. The hard part for me today is that the memories of those heady early days of hope are
tinged with the reality of the carnage that followed. I will always remember that night in 1974 when
hope turned to fear with the execution of former Prime Minister Endelkachew Makonnen and
members of his government. For the past 20 years, I have tried to put to rest that time and those
events –– that fascination with danger, with living in places of great risk. In Ethiopia, danger and
risk were coupled with a tinge of guilt: That as a foreigner, I was not a target of the revolution; that I
got off easy and therefore must continually prove if only to myself that I am not a coward; that I will
not run from danger as I had by leaving my friends behind, friends who disappeared in the night.
So I thought that by returning to Ethiopia to take a three–month contract job with the Peace Corps to
train a new group of volunteers, I might finally close the door on that haunting time. It would be
simple. I would return to my old house on Bishoftu Road in Addis Ababa, where I lived at the height
of the revolution. If the house had remained gleaming white and the lilac–colored

Working As An Intern For Placer Times

  • 1. Working As An Intern For Placer Times Working as an intern for Placer Times, a major newspaper company in Addis Ababa, Africa, I am here to have my voice heard. I grew up in a big city where no one had a car. We either walked, took trams, or subways. At age 16, I got my first job two blocks from my house writing magazine articles. Ever since then, I have been interning at big news paper companies in big cities all around the world. I have traveled to many cities, reporting local news and thus never really got a chance to settle down. I am currently 24 years old and living in a three–bedroom apartment with two other women in the heart of Addis Ababa, Africa. Much like San Francisco, this city is over–crowded, contains too many tourists, and its beautiful views are being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The man had no ID on him, so the officers could not identify who he was. The body of this man was never clamed. He was named "Victim 001." 001 represented the "unknown" future victims that might come from other autonomous car accidents. Although these autonomous cars can drive themselves, the occupant still has the responsibility to press the emergency break when necessary. Chris Rodriquez, the occupant of the car in this instance, had just gotten his masters from UCLA and was about to pitch his first business deal at his dad's law firm. Living under his dad's expectations, he knew there was no way to ease the man without having a couple of drinks beforehand. In this case, having a couple of drinks impaired the twenty–eight–year–old male occupant's judgment, making him unable to press the emergency break. Therefore, the death of the pedestrian was the occupant's fault. Mercedes Bens company has been working on making the perfect autonomous car for the past 13 years. Working to make sure every little detail was detailed to perfection; Stopping when necessary, making sure the speed was accurate, and installing emergency breaks to make sure the cars would not get out of control, were Mercedes goals. There are only a couple hundred of theses two door cars with windows tinted as deep as the ocean, its engine as loud as thunder, with the exhaust puffing white smoke. • 2. The First Wave Of The Dergue's Red Terror When the Dergue, a commission of approximately 120 military officers, surmised leadership, it abolished Parliament, suspended the Constitution and captured Emperor Haile Selassie and former members of the imperial authorities for alleged malefactors against the Ethiopians. All land, institutions and industries were nationalized. During the initial transmutation, the Dergue still highly respected the revolution's slogan "without blood;" overall the transition was relatively made no casualties and was peaceful. However, great power conflict within the incipient ruling elite led to the elevate of a new leader, Mengistu Haile Mariam, and the phrase phrasal idiom "without blood" was soon forgotten. Following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie, Superior general Aman Andom led the Dergue government. However, in November ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if an individual were young and even insignificantly educated, that was much of the time enough evidence to show that they were incorporated into counter revolutionary activities. The result was that no under 2500 young people alone were killedin the midst of the first wave. Moreover, countless, women, and children were bound. According to Human Rights Watch report, an extensive segment of these prisoners were bound in unspeakable conditions, squeezed by the hundreds into airless, dull storm cellars, where they could hear the yells of those being tormented while they expected torure themselves. Many of those executed were basically left by the roadside with Red Terror slogon joined to their bodies to startle political opponents.Equally stunning is that the familes of those killed or missing were every now and again required to pay the assembly for the shot used to kill the relative before the body would be released for internment. By mid 1977, Mengistu had successfully destroyed the EPRP in Addis Ababa, and impelled the second phae of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Understanding the urban environmental challenges in Addis Ababa A. Characteristics and development of the city Addis Ababa, one of the oldest and largest cities in Africa, was founded as the capital of Ethiopia in 1886 when Menelik II became the Emperor of Ethiopia (Bjerkil, 2013; UN–HABITAT, 2008). Following its foundation, the city has seen an important era of modernisation and increase in population size. In fact, according to Pankurst (1961), Emperor Menelik attempted to forge something new in Ethiopia's history by joining modern institutions and traditional way of life. Although the city lacked many characteristics of a 20th century capital such as municipalities, it put in place the foundations for the development of a modern state that started to impact the traditional structure of the country. • 6. My Experience At The United States As I saw Ethiopia, after ten long years I could not recognize my country. I was shocked and overwhelmed with pride. The buildings from the plane looked as if I was in a different place. Surely there could not have been this much done in ten years. To my dismay, I found that to be true. Yes, there were many buildings but there they were children, mothers, disabled citizens of my country laying at the bottom of these buildings, just as I left them. My heart could never get used to seeing this not even when i lived there, but now I felt my chest caving in. I came from the world that is far from which I live in now. My friends were not as fortunate as me as they lived on the streets of Addis Ababa Ethiopia. They had more responsibilities than most adults in the USA. Many of my friends and family were not in school regularly and had to work at a very young age. I remember many stories that still give me goosebumps when I think of them. I lived thru the AIDS epidemic as well as many droughts in Ethiopia where many of my friends lost their families and their homes. Reflecting on what things shaped me to be so driven I think would these very trying times for my people would have to be it. I always wondered why I was blessed and fortunate enough to live in a stable household when my friends were suffering so badly. I knew that I had to push for their sake and not take my life and opportunities for granted. My mother and father were both politicians, my dad was a general in the ... • 7. Ethiopian Cultural Identity 1. What is your chosen group background? What has it meant to belong to this group? As you know, I am Ethiopian. I was born and raised in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. I belong to the Ethiopian community not only in Ethiopia, but also here in America. Finding Ethiopian friends who share the same interest as me, understand their culture, practice their languages, and have interest in returning back to Ethiopia someday, has always been a struggle for me. Most of the Ethiopians who I meet are Americanized. When I was studying at NIU, I was blessed to have a small circle of Ethiopians who grew up there. Spending time with me made me feel secure, like I actually belonged. Lucky for me, I am also a part of the African community. There are 53 countries in Africa; however, there is an unbreakable bond that is seen amongst Africans around the world. We share the same identity and have the upmost love and respect for our continent and the people still living there. 2. Where did you grow up and what other groups resided there? How did this early personal history influence your beliefs of others I lived in Ethiopia for quite some time before given a chance to move to America. When I arrived in America, the only people that were around me were Caucasians. They did not look like me or act like me. I found this very difficult when I first came to America. The interview with Belay Abebe provided a first person experience of what happened during the Ethiopian Red Terror. Throughout the interview, Abebe answered questions that provided insight on how Mengistu took control of the Ethiopian government, cruel things that Derg did to citizens, and personal encounters with the party themselves. When our plans to travel to the remote Tusheti region got snowed on, we decided to visit a forgotten protected reserve near Georgia's border with Azerbaijan and the Dagestan province of Russia. I was recovering from a flu, and even on a sunny day, wrapped up in layers and a warm hat. "Cold?" Otto, our potbellied, jolly Georgian host asked me. I solemnly nodded. He turned to search for something in the shelves of his outdoor kitchen shed. I tried to tell him I had already taken medicine, but he wouldn't stop. He finally found what he was looking for. A bottle of homemade chacha – a strong plum liquor ubiquitous in Georgian households. "Chacha very good," he said, even as I resisted it at first. Then we cheered to India, Georgia, family, religion (even if mine is atheism) and good health, and downed shot after shot. Georgia airbnb, airbnb tips, shivya nath With my Georgian host Otto. I guess the flu, hiking to the waterfalls in the protected reserve, my friend's tumble into a glacial river and all the homemade jams we ate for breakfast will gradually fade away in my memory. • 13. Life Of Ethiopia Vs Life During The Usa Life in Ethiopia vs life in the USA Did you ever visit Ethiopia and observed peoples' life there? Life in Ethiopia is completely different from life in the USA. There are many difficulties in Ethiopia and some of them are poverty, education and health are some of the problems. Even though there are some problems in America they are not like the problems in Ethiopia. Majority of the people in Ethiopia are suffering from poverty. In Ethiopia there is no enough food and people cannot feed their families easily. All of these poverty problems are related to backward agriculture and drought. Agriculture is one of the basic source of food and people depend on the agricultural products in Ethiopia, but it is very back ward and farmers are still using oxen and horses to cultivate the land. This is why farmers cannot produce enough and their work is from hand to mouth. Agriculture in Ethiopia depends on the rain, therefore if there is no enough rain there is no enough food. These are some of the agricultural problems in Ethiopia. I believe education, is very important thing to break the cycle of poverty and make people life easier but in Ethiopia lack of enough and quality education facilities, shortage of highly qualified teachers and lack of a job after graduation made people life difficult more than anyone can imagine. In Ethiopia, there is a shortage of quality built schools all over the state. In rural part of the state, the schools are built far kilometers away from where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Analysis Of Moving Shadows II By Girma Berta In his collection of works, Moving Shadows II, Girma Berta uniquely combines photographs of people on the street of his home city, Addis Ababa, with digital editing to contrast the people starkly with a solid backdrop. His work is primarily presented on Instagram, but recently has been displayed in showcases in New York. Berta's primary goal when it comes to this collection was to cause people to "stare into the eyes of Addis Ababa... the beautiful, the ugly and all that is in between" (Yoseph, 2017). And accomplish that it does. Loving, hard–working, tired, friend, family: these are the words that immediately come to mind when looking at these pieces on the surface level. When one looks deeper, though, Berta's work counters dominant Western ideas of Africans as this unanimous "other" by simply putting these people who aren't always thought about or known into light. He's taking their shadows and bringing them into the light for the world to see and understand. By transposing everyday people from the streets of Addis Ababa with solid backdrops, Berta's work brings their unique stories to life, countering Western ideologies of Africans as tribal, sexual, and a completely different people. Berta uses his work to tell these people's stories, and just by showing the variety of people, actions, and lives of these people, he's breaking down the ideology that Western media presents of all Africans being the same sort of tribal people. By looking at piece II from the collection, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Djibouti: How Culture in the Horn of Africa is... Sociologists define culture as "the ways of thinking, the ways of acting, and the material objects that together form a people's way of life" (Macionis 40); but when and how are cultures developed? A society's values and beliefs derived from their people's ancestry, their economy or way of living in relation to their physical environment, and political situation all play active roles in forming a society's culture. In addition, local variables alone do not develop a society's culture in the modern era. One must not only consider the affects of globalization on a local culture, but also, contrastingly, a local culture's ability to affect the global stage and its interactions within it. These two main ethnic groups aspired separate political freedoms, yet they lacked the power and resources to achieve it being poor nomadic populations (Djibouti 1). • 33. Essay About My Generation As the world changes and evolves, so do we. My generation is vastly different from my mother's. She was born in the late 70's in Ethiopia, and she stayed there for 30 years. The government was very corrupt, in the sense that they treated a particular group better than the rest. So her opportunities were limited and she could only do certain things. The government also limited access to technology. This meant Ethiopia experienced a gap in technological advancements from the rest of the world. People would acquire dvd players, mp3 player and mobile phones 6–10 years after they were released. Whereas in the United States or other first world countries they have immediate access. Therefore, they had limited knowledge of how to use technology. In Ethiopia, you take a test the determines what your career will be, whereas in the U.S. you can follow your dreams. My mother knew that's not the life she wanted for me, so she sacrificed her own future so mine can prosper. In 2007, when I was 7, I came with my mother to the United States . Before we left my mother was enrolled in Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. One semester was all she had left before she could graduate and get a degree. But she sacrificed her own future so I could have a brighter childhood than she had. When we got to the U.S. it was hard because she knew English, but not well enough to get a high paying job. Therefore, we shared a house with my uncle and 3 other families in Springfield, Virginia, to avoid the hefty cost of living alone. Unlike my mother, when I came here it wasn't hard for me to adjust to the language because they made us study English in Ethiopia. During school back in Ethiopia, all the student were required to speak, read and write english in school. If you refused you would get scolded, then hit. Westernization was not important in Ethiopia during my mother's generations but now it has become an important part of Ethiopian education. When I came to the U.S. the culture was difficult to adjust to , but it was better for me than it was for my mom because I had a good grasp of the language. During my 10 years in the U.S., technology has evolved and we have seen great accomplishments and advancements. Unlike my mother's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Is It What It 's Cracked Up? Is it what it's cracked up to be? From the start of urbanization the belief in many nations all throughout history has been that cities are where the prosperity of the nation is held. But is this really a valid argument or does that simply referring to a select few? The urban population has grown rapidly since 1950 form 746 million to 3.9 billion people as of 2014. Many of these number exist in North America with 82% of the population living in cities, Europe with 73%, and Latin America with 80%. Asia and Africa on the other hand are far behind having only 40 – 48% of population living in urban areas. It is said by the World Bank that "Africa is witnessing an unprecedented projected population growth of more than 40,000 new urban inhabitants per day between now and 2040" (Voice of America). Although for some countries population growth as large as this can be a good thing but in regards to many developing countries that have cities with a lack of a strong infrastructure, a weak economic hold, lack of a sustainable government, and a poor quality of life, the population influx could cause a major issue in the progress of development and therefore make urbanization a highly negative thing if these issues are not properly addressed. Firstly the definition of what is considered urban and what is considered rural varies from country to country. Barney Cohen, economic researcher, says that urban communities can be defined in any number of ways. This is including by population ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Causes Of Refugees In Ethiopia Picture being an Ethiopian refugee and having to flee your homeland that was brutally destroyed, being ridiculed and persecuted because of your faith and religion, and being forced into working. People both go to and flee from Ethiopia because they have been through unimaginable things, for example, refugees have seen war, their family members being persecuted right in front of them, their government crumbling, and their homes being ripped apart. Ethiopia is one of the largest refugee hosting nations in the world("Ethiopia is creating 100,000 jobs to tackle its refugee problem"), people that have had their homes and lives destroyed, had to start a new life, and people that have been persecuted because of their faith leave and go to Ethiopia to find refuge, but there are many things we can do to help. First and foremost, refugees are forced to flee because their homes are being destroyed and because they were being persecuted because of their religion. When people were asked why they had to flee their homeland of Ethiopia, more than half responded, " that they left because their homes were destroyed" ("Refugees Flee Ethiopian Collectivization"). People's homes were being demolished, their food and farming equipment were being stolen by the militia, and their families were being taken from them forced to join the militia/ army, are threatened, by their families being killed or brutally hurt, and turned into killing machines("Refugees Flee Ethiopian Collectivization"). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hope was so tangible that even the foreign community was living in a heightened sense of anticipation. The hard part for me today is that the memories of those heady early days of hope are tinged with the reality of the carnage that followed. I will always remember that night in 1974 when hope turned to fear with the execution of former Prime Minister Endelkachew Makonnen and members of his government. For the past 20 years, I have tried to put to rest that time and those events –– that fascination with danger, with living in places of great risk. In Ethiopia, danger and risk were coupled with a tinge of guilt: That as a foreigner, I was not a target of the revolution; that I got off easy and therefore must continually prove if only to myself that I am not a coward; that I will not run from danger as I had by leaving my friends behind, friends who disappeared in the night. So I thought that by returning to Ethiopia to take a three–month contract job with the Peace Corps to train a new group of volunteers, I might finally close the door on that haunting time. It would be simple. I would return to my old house on Bishoftu Road in Addis Ababa, where I lived at the height of the revolution. If the house had remained gleaming white and the lilac–colored ...
