Causes And Effects Of Urbanization
In both developed and developing countries of the world, urban centers have been an alternative
center for human settlement and hence, the rate of urbanization is increasing at the turn of this
century. Recent studies indicate that at the beginning of the twentieth century, only 10% of the
world's population lived in urban areas. However, currently, half of the world's population has
become urban dwellers (UNCHS, 2002). This shows that urbanization all over the world is
expanding from time to time and the change has vast implication on the living conditions of the
urban society. Due to rapid urbanization, the concentration of people especially, in cities and towns

Self–Reflection: I am Ethiopian. I was born and raised in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. I belong to the
Ethiopian community, not only in Ethiopia but also here in America. Finding Ethiopian friends who
share the same interests as me, understand our culture, fluent in our languages, and plan on returning
back to Ethiopia someday, has always been a struggle for me. Most of the Ethiopians who I meet are
Americanized. When I was studying at Northern Illinois university, I was blessed to have a small
circle of Ethiopians who grew up there. Spending time with them made me feel secure like I actually
belonged. Lucky for me, I am also a part of the African community. There are 54 countries in Africa;
however, there is an unbreakable bond amongst Africans around the world. We share the same

the only people that were around me were Caucasians. They did not look like me or act like me. I

My Family In My Life
I was born and grew up in Ethiopia, moving to America three years ago. Ethiopia is one of the
traditional country where most of the population and the economy rely on agriculture. I was born in
small rural town called Akaki in the southern part of Addis Ababa City. My family depends on
agriculture, my parents grow crops like teff, barley, hard wheat and sorghum, which is the common
ingredients for our day to day meal. The production of these crops takes place in traditional farming.
I am the youngest kid in my family, that means I am free from any responsibilities in my culture my

being ridiculed and persecuted because of your faith and religion, and being forced into working.

As I saw Ethiopia, after ten long years I could not recognize my country. I was shocked and
overwhelmed with pride. The buildings from the plane looked as if I was in a different place. Surely
there could not have been this much done in ten years. To my dismay, I found that to be true. Yes,
there were many buildings but there they were children, mothers, disabled citizens of my country
laying at the bottom of these buildings, just as I left them. My heart could never get used to seeing

throughout history has been that cities are where the prosperity of the nation is held. But is this
