Analysis Of Silence Of The Lambs
ART 105: Film as Art
Critique One
Silence of the Lambs: Eating Other Movies with Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti
Silence of the Lambs is viewed as one of the greatest horror–thriller films, as it has won Academy
Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and
Adapted Screenplay. Some of the people in our ART 105 class might not even want to see this
movie due to its realism of such a dark and painful story, as well as some of the graphic material
shown. This movie, however, is one of the best horror films of the century, in my humble opinion. I
enjoy this movie thoroughly and often watch it in my spare time, so I have plenty of opinions on
every aspect of this movie.
During this entire movie, all the main characters, to me, were all very interesting, as the two(ish)
antagonists are, to this day, traumatizing those who see them without having seen the movie. Clarice
Starling (Jodie Foster), the protagonist, is a very hard worker who is blunt and concerned more
about education and catching a killer, as she rejects advances by both Dr. Chilton (Anthony Heald),
the asylum owner, and an entomologist named Pilcher (Paul Lazar) , who ask about her personal
life. She is often enthralled with catching Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) that even in one of the first
scenes, she already has her sights on him. She soon dedicates every spare moment trying to dig
deeper, to find the truth and to save lives. Also, Hannibal Lector (Anthony

Silence Of The Lambs Compare And Contrast Essay
"The last thing you want is Hannibal Lecter inside your head." It is a daunting task to effectively
transfer textual tonality from page to screen. Balancing proper visual interpretations of the text with
original insights is not an easy procedure, and not every filmmaker is equipped with the artistic
skills necessary to complete such an undertaking. Alejandro Jodorowsky's wildly unsuccessful
attempt at adapting Frank Herbert's Dune, for example, ended in bankruptcy for the studio and
premature cancellation of the project due to the extensive runtime the film was to have in
accordance with the length of the book. Many filmic adaptations fail in their inability to recapture
and translate what originally gave a text literary merit. Jonathan Demme's adaptation of the
quintessential Thomas Harris novel Silence of the Lambs is so well ... Show more content on

Each creative, Demme and Harris, utilize the conventions of their respective platform not for the
creation of an identical character, but an identical feeling. In both texts, Lecter executes his visions
of control, and both artists prove themselves capable of demonstrating these ideas to an audience.
Roger Ebert describes the character of Lecter as having a "speaking voice with the precision of a
man so arrogant he can barely be bothered to address the sloppy intelligence of the ordinary
person." He is intelligent and knows it, craving control for apparently no other reason than because
it is there. There are, however, major discrepancies between Harris's one–eyed, eleven–fingered Dr.
Lecter Demme's subdued criminal mastermind. The intimately paternal relationship between Lecter
and Starling that guides the narrative remains constant between iterations even as Lecter changes.
Between literature and film, he acts different, looks different, but is essential same character,
evoking the same response from the audience of both book and

Film Silence Of The Lambs By Jonathan Demme
The Silence of The Lambs is a 1991 horror film directed by Jonathan Demme. It revolves around a
rookie FBI Agent Clarice Starling and her quest to find the mysterious serial killer Buffullo Bill.
With the help and manipulation of a cannibal psychitrist, Dr Hannibal Lecter, Starling is able to
understand the mystery surronding Buffolo Bill. I must start by saying that this was truly an
excellent film and I would give it a 4.5 out of a rating of 5. The intense and eerie music used really
helped to establish the classic horror genre. However, this film wouldnt have been half as good
without Antony Hopkins playing the infamous Dr Hannibal lecter. Hopkins plays the psychotic
cannibal with so much flair and charisma that you would for root and symphatise

Silence Of The Lambs Forensic Evidence
Silence of the Lambs Forensic Evidence The film "Silence of the Lambs" based off the novel
written by Thomas Harris has a story plot that involves many situations where forensic evidence is
used. The film follows an FBI trainee named Clarice Starling trying to hunt down a serial killer
using scientific methods to solve the crime. One method that was used during the investigation was
the profile of the criminal. While observing the previous victims' bodies, Clarice discovered the
common factor that the unsub would always shove a specific moth species down the victim's throat.
This important piece of evidence was the smoking gun that resulted in finally finding Buffalo Bill in
his house. If it was not for the observation of the moths being ... Show more content on

Even though the river was not the exact location of where the murders took place, the people were
still able to get clues on where the crimes may have happened. Also, by dumping the bodies in the
river this trait let the detectives come to the conclusion that the unsub was an organized killer. This
means that he was smart enough to know that the river would erase many traces of evidence that
would make it harder for the FBI to solve the case. A third scientific technique used in "Silence of
the Lambs" was identifying the killer's trophy. Some murderers keep a souvenir from their victim
that reminds them of their crime. After looking at the victims, Clarice discovered that Buffalo Bill's
trophy was keeping the skin of the women that he murdered. Later in the movie, Clarice visited one
of the homes of a missing victim. While studying her room looking for clues, Clarice comes to the
conclusion that Buffalo Bill was skinning the women to make a bodysuit. Not only did seeing the
moths in the killer's home draw a red flag, but seeing the sewing kit also gave a hint the she had
found Buffalo Bill. A chemical used in the film that is apart of forensic science is a gel like
substance that is placed under the

Who Is The Antagonist In The Silence Of The Lambs
Part One: Director & Writer
The Silence of the Lambs is directed by Jonathan Demme, with the screenplay written by Ted Tally
and the novel it is based on (of the same name) written by Thomas Harris. Other notable films
directed by Jonathan Demme include Philadelphia (1993) and The Manchurian Candidate (2004).
Ted Tally has also written the screenplays for Red Dragon (2002), All the Pretty Horses (2000), and
The Juror (1996), in addition to being a creative consultant for the popular movies Shrek the Third
(2007) and Madagascar (2005).
Part Two: Narrative Devices
In The Silence of the Lambs, there are many narrative devices used and several parallel stories. The
first parallel story is of FBI agent–in–training Clarice Starling's interactions with cannibalistic serial
killer and psychiatrist Hannibal Lector as she attempts to get him to give her information. This is
where the other parallel story comes into play–Clarice (and the rest of the FBI) are trying to catch
another serial killer (this one still on the loose), Buffalo Bill. Because Hannibal has knowledge of
and/or is capable of profiling Bill, these two stories continue to interact as Clarice (and the ... Show

The main conflict is between Buffalo Bill and everyone else in the film. The main plot of the film is
based on the other characters trying to stop him from killing anyone else, and many conflicts arise
between him and each of these characters in the movie: the FBI trying to stop him, Clarice and Jack
trying to profile him, and his kidnap victims trying to survive/escape, especially Catherine Martin.
The other main conflict in the film is between Clarice and Hannibal. Hannibal is a murderer and
cannibal, but Clarice becomes psychologically drawn to him, and he forces her to tell him about
herself in order to gain information about Buffalo Bill. Additionally, Hannibal creates conflict when
he continues to kill other people from behind bars and later

Dr. Hannibal Lecter's The Silence Of The Lambs
Title of Paper
In the book silence of the lambs (Harris, 1988) as well as the movie (Demme,1991) "The Silence of
the Lambs" deals with a young FBI cadet who is sent to interview a captured madman to find out
about a serial killer who is stripping the skin from his female victims after they die. The FBI has had
no luck with the case and agent Jack Crawford tries to throw a curve–ball to Dr. Hannibal Lecter by
sending Clarice Starling. Lecter is a former doctor of Levine and holds the clues to capturing the
unknown criminal. Needless to say the book and film takes many twists and turns, creating a
suspenseful thriller that has no equal. At the heart of "The Silence of the Lambs" are the
confrontations between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. ... Show more content on

The two lapses in security only happen when Barney had the days off (Harris P. 236) it took him
more than six months to make the handcuff key. In the movie he gets a pen from Chilton and only

Chapter 38 The ambulance slowing to a stop in traffic on the sixlane freeway, drivers behind it
confused and honking, hesitant to pull around an emergency vehicle. Two small pops like backfires

the mask from the officer that he killed and then some commotion in the ambulance and that is all.
In chapter 47 Clarice is in the laundry room going over Buffalo Bills case files and comes up that
who was killed first and who was killed second the FBI off she was by herself (Harris P. 295) in the
movie it shows her and her roommate in the laundry. There is many other things in the book there
are different from the movie but one of the big things that happen in the book is in the last chapter
when Lecter wrights to Clarice saying." I have no plans to call on you, Clarice, the world being
more interesting with you in it. Be sure you extend me the same courtesy". Dr. Lecter touched his

Hannibal Lecter Mental Illness
In the movie The Silence of the Lambs directed by Jonathan Demme numerous characters have
psychological disorders. One character with psychological disorders is Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill is a
serial killer and the main antagonist in the film. His latest victim is Catherine Martin. Catherine is
being held in a well in Buffalo Bill's basement. Time is of the essence and Catherine's life lies in the
hands of Clarice Starling. Another character with a psychological disorder is Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Dr. Hannibal Lecter is also a serial killer but is serving life behind bars. Clarice Starling a student at
the FBI training academy is determined to catch Buffalo Bill and believes there is a connection
between Buffalo Bill and Hannibal Lecter. The disorder I believe Buffalo Bill has is Body
Dysmorphic Disorder. In The Silence of the Lambs Buffalo Bill, whose real name is Jame Gumb is

Hannibal Lecter has is Antisocial Personality Disorder. He has a persistent disregard for the rights of
others. He has no guilt for the harm he inflicts on others. Hannibal Lecter manipulated Miggs
because Miggs disrespected Clarice Starling. Miggs felt so guilty due to the manipulation that he cut
and swallowed his tongue and choked to death. Lector also manipulates FBI trainee Clarice Starling.
Throughout the movie he tries to get inside her head and learn about her personal life. For example
Lector says "You're very frank, Clarice. I think it would be quite something to know you in private
life." He manages to learn about an event that took place during Clarice's childhood. The event took
place after the death of her father when Clarice was sent to live with relatives. She awoke to the
sound of screaming lambs that were going to be slaughtered. She tried to save one but unfortunately
it got slaughtered. This memory haunts her throughout her life and she still awakes to the sound of

Censorship in tryingtobecleverhere
In "Silence of the Lambs", Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling are different characters baring
frightfully similar traits. Sexual discrimination and an ignorance of others on their individual human
complexities band these two characters together. Lecter's "serial killer" image and Starling's
innocent appearance due to her femininity perpetrates these two characters as being outcasts in
society. These factors along with others, allows us to see such similarities, with Lecter portraying a
father figure in Starling's life. Due to societal perceptions and ostracization, similar childhood
experiences, and a strong look into the relationship they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First and foremost, Hannibal Lecter shares similar qualities to characters such as Norman Bates,
Frankenstein, and King Kong. All of these characters behave according their own natures, and in
doing so, nothing that these characters do are morally "evil" in any sense, but rather resulting
circumstances of being entirely misunderstood by society. In a strong sense, these characters can be
connected to the perception of mental illness, particularly within society during the turn of the 21st
century. These characters are all held to certain expectations, however when they are put in a
situation where they are given a choice with their own free will, nothing "evil" comes out of it. In
fact, when King Kong was given the choice, he chooses to rescue Fay Wray. Frankenstein is only a
result of what one man in society made him out to be while Norman Bates always made an effort to
be alone, but was left as an outcast who only wanted to adhere to his mother's wishes. He battled
within his own mind and consequentially, was neglected from the outside. Lecter was seen by
society as a mass serial killer, however when Starling treats him as a human being instead of just a
"serial killer" and does not put a damper on his vast intelligence like others, Lecter makes his own
willing attempt to help her. Similarly to this, Clarice Starling wants to succeed in

The Silence Of The Lambs
"The Silence of the Lambs" premiered in 1991. This movie is about a young female FBI agent
Clarice Starling, she is assigned to help find a missing woman who has been kidnapped by a
psychopathic serial killer who has been skinning his victims. Clarice tries to gain more insight into
the psychopath's mind, by talking to Hannibal Lecter another psychopath, who before being arrested
was a respected psychiatrist. Her Advisor FBI agent Crawford believes that Hannibal has the
answers to their questions and can locate the killer, but knows that he cannot gain Hannibal's trust.
However, believes that Clarice might be able to due to her lack of experience. Its genre is listed as a
thriller, but also is sub–categorized under psychological, and crime.
Thriller films are movies that build up suspense, tension, and anticipation of things to come. They
provide thrills from various circumstances presented in the story, where the protagonist (the main
character) encounters certain types of threatening, mysterious, or dangerous situations. The
characters in thriller films often include criminals, people down on their luck, innocent victims,
psychos, and cops. "The Silence of the Lambs" isn't just that, it best fits under its sub–genre of a
psychological thriller, which is defined as a thriller story which emphasizes the psychology of its
characters and their unstable emotional states. Which is very true for this film considering that there
isn't one, but two unstable characters, Hannibal

Silence Of The Lambs Thomas Harris Analysis
Silence of the Lambs is a mystery drama based off the novel by the same name, which was written
by Thomas Harris. Within the story, the viewer is introduced to two different types of serial killer
through the medium of Clarice Starling, the film's protagonist.
Though previous works state that Hannibal "does not fit any psychological profile", Hannibal seems
to fit the stereotypical tropes presented by the media on serial killers. Through Starling's interactions
with him, the audience can see that Hannibal is methodical and clever, able to steer and manipulate
his conversations with Starling in the direction as he pleases, yet courteous and self–aware as he
apologizes for another inmate's actions. This advanced mental capability and stability makes the
infamous serial killer the perfect foil for the actual antagonist of the story, Buffalo Bill. ... Show

Buffalo Bill, whose real name is Jame Gumb, is a fictional character who was created by Thomas
Harris to serve as the overarching antagonist of both the film and novel. Thomas Harris seemed to
have drawn from a variety of different real life serial killers during the creation of this character. For
example, just like serial killer Jerry Brudos, Jame was abused as a child and abandoned by his
family, left to travel from home to home through the foster care system. Also like Jerry Brudos,
Jame would later find the tools to continue his deviance through the institution that society places
him in for his deviance. As Jame grew into adulthood, his character seems to be more and more like
Edmund Kemper. Though Edmund Kemper was described as an intelligent man while Jame seemed
sub–bar in that aspect, he and Jame share a fragile sense of worth. More importantly however, is
that they both outright shared similar first murders, as they both apathetically killed their
grandparents to see what it was like to murder someone. As stated

Clarice's Experience With Dr. Lecter In Silence Of The Lambs
In the movie "Silence of the lambs" Clarice's experience with Dr. Lecter was very strange, she deals
with trying to solve a serial killer case, gaining the trust of Dr. Lecter, and dealing with the strange
fascination Dr. Lecter has with Clarice. Clarice is an FBI in training, and she agrees to practice
psychiatry with one of the most violent, brilliant, and dangerous criminals ever. She wants to
succeed in everything she does and it reflects in her work. One of the main problems that Clarice
faces in the movie is she is trying to solve a murder case while working with a vastly known
criminal. Clarice at first feels great levels of unease working with Dr. Lecter because again he's a
violent criminal and she is only trying to use him as field

In the film, Silence of the Lambs, psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lector is questioned by FBI agent
Clarice Starling to help with the serial killer case of "Buffalo Bill" (Bozman, Saxon, Utt, Demme,
1991). Dr. Lector is a convicted murderer and cannibal whom is locked in an asylum under the care
of Dr. Frederick Chilton (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Lector is violent, shows no remorse, deceitful,
and disregards the law which leads to him having antisocial personality disorder. There are four

The character Hannibal Lector is not meant to be likeable or relatable in any way. Dr. Lector is a
violent cannibal who likes to manipulate and lie to meet his goals. He is lewd towards the women in
the film. For example, he asked a female Senator if she breast–fed her child who has been
kidnapped by Buffalo Bill (Bozman et al., 1991). He is shown biting an officers face, and then
wearing that officers peeled off face to escape imprisonment (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Lector is
portrayed a heartless criminal with no redeeming qualities. Furthermore, the depiction of the mental
health profession in general in the movie is also negative regarding the character Dr. Chilton. Dr.
Chilton throughout the movie is not concerned with the well–being or treatment of his patients and
is more concerned with his own gain from the notoriety of his patients. During a press conference
about the Buffalo Bill case, Dr. Chilton takes credit for acquiring information from Dr. Lector,
however it was Starling who did all the work (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Chilton also described Dr.
Lector as a "prized asset" in terms of research, but it was said in a manner that completely
dehumanized Dr. Lector (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Chilton makes unnecessary comments about
Starling's appearance because she is a woman. When he first meets her he comments that he sees a
lot of detectives but none so attractive (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr.

What Are The Stereotypes In The Silence Of The Lambs
Text Name: The silence of the lambs
Text Type: Extended Novel
Author: Thomas Harris
The novel The Silence Of The Lambs written by Thomas Harris is a thriller about Clarice Starling, a
trainee at the FBI, meeting 'Hannibal the Cannibal' Lecter. 'Hannibal the Cannibal' Lecter is a
psychopathic homicidal maniac who is enclosed at Baltimore Detention Center. He retains all the
intelligence preceding the case of Buffalo Bill, who has carefully abducted the senator's daughter. I
strongly recommend this film to all senior college students around New Zealand, because of the
sophistication and the countless messages to all generations. One of the most outstanding themes to
me, is that sexism was rife in the 1980's USA. This theme astounds e, I think ... Show more content

This is shown in the film, when Hannibal says "And you think that if you save poor Catherine, you
could make them stop, don't you?...", and all of the stereotyping that occurs in this world. And how
only those that think and act on those deeds and stereotypes are those that can see far ahead of the
rest. And Clarice starling is one of those exceptionals, which in the future will uncover the
mysteries, and silence the lambs that are constantly, unstoppably, metaphorically screaming in her
head. The only way for Clarice to stop that screaming is to excel, and solve the mystery of Buffalo
Bill's true identity. Lecter made me feel intrigued by exploiting Clarice's fears, and that it is
upsetting, that Clarice has to prove herself to her dear father, just for his enjoyment, and to fulfil his
fantasies of exploitation, and cannibalism. This is shown in the text, when Hannibal says "After
your father's murder, you were orphaned, you were 10 years old, you went to live with you cousins
on a... ranch in Montana. And...". This shows lecter was getting inside her head to torture her, and

More Like Sterile-ing!: Detective Starling in Silence of...
Silence of the Lambs can be placed within many genres. One of which is the "Thriller" genre. A
huge contribution to why Silence of the Lambs is a thriller film is the character of deranged genius
Hannibal Lecter. Played by Anthony Hopkins whom won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his
performance, Lecter holds the key to the case Detective Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster
whom also won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is determined to solve. With such a situation,
interrogation is essential as many other films within the thriller subgenre of Crime Thriller also
show. By comparing Clarice Starling's behavior within the interrogation setting to other detectives
and women of thriller films, it is revealed that although Lecter ... Show more content on

Two common tropes of the psychological thriller are mind games and obsession, both of which are
at the forefront of Silence insofar as Detective Starling being held mentally captive to the
manipulative genius of Hannibal Lecter. Lecter's exposing of Starling as vulnerable is crucial to the
film in regards to how she overcomes it. Another thriller that falls into these two thriller subgenres
and even replicates the Hannibal versus Starling situation almost identically is Christopher Nolan's
2008 release The Dark Knight. In The Dark Knight, Batman, like Starling, is held mentally captive
by his maniacal arch–nemesis the Joker whom, like Lecter, is in physical captivity. Inconveniently,
the Joker has important information regarding the physical captivity of two figures important to
Batman as well as Bruce Wayne: Harvey Dent, a key political player that the Batman needs and
Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne's ex–lover. The way the Joker and Hannibal Lecter tease the detectives
with their leverage is kindred to say the least. Both find decadent satisfaction in toying with their
respective interrogators. Moreover, to the detectives' dismay, as long as the deranged duo withholds

Silence Of The Lambs Archetypes
Great job on defining the archetypes in the movie Silence of the Lambs. I recall the movie vividly, a
timeless classic film. Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter) fulfills the role of father as he attempts to
distort Clarice's mind with her past. Hannibal uses his knowledge of her past as a weapon to confuse
her. Clarice in the film often has mixed emotions to fight the past to solve the case. The Labyrinth
archetype location is vivid in the scene when Hannibal escapes and hides throughout the building.
As law enforcement search for Hopkins, he calculates attacking each person using his teeth as a
weapon. The first time I saw this movie, it was chilling to think of a human cannibal. However, I
was too intrigued to stop watching the movie. I watched

Silence Of The Lambs Film Techniques
2. One technique used in The Silence of the Lambs is cross–cutting. The viewer is deliberately
deceive through clever cross–cutting between an FBI team preparing to storm a house in Calumet
City, Illinois, and an absolutely livid Bill, thrashing through his basement after having discovered
Catherine has captured his precious poodle at the bottom of the well. It turns out the FBI has missed
its mark and has left Starling alone to face the killer. Playing on Kuleshov's effect, this film uses
juxtaposition as a false sense of security, almost teasing the viewer once we see the tremendous
amount of danger Starling has unknowingly put herself in. The climatic scene that follows has a
number of important techniques. The audience adopts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once she enters the basement, the atmosphere becomes absolute chaos ]. The audience is barraged
with dark shadows and an onslaught of noises, including a dog's barks, Catherine's screams, the

is momentarily eliminated leaving Starling and the viewer in total darkness, creating a sense of
dread and mind numbing terror. It returns only once the viewer adopts Bill's point–of–view, casting
his images in the green of night– vision goggles. The audience is put in the same helpless, naked
position as Starling. This returns to the age old commentary on voyeurism, how as viewers, we

Horror films have gone through a massive evolution over the years. Perhaps, it is due the massive
evolution of societal norms. Perhaps it is due to the mass desensitization to violence. Whatever the
reason as directors and screenwriters developed in their crafts the need for bigger, better, scarier
monsters, began to build. With the introduction to the supernatural, murder and gore, the masses
screamed for more. Horror took an incredible turn for the better; implementing incredible scores,

The second most iconic scene would be in which; rookie Clarice Starling has arrived at the house of

Comparison Of Biological Theories In The Silence Of The Lamb
1. Introduction The silence of the lambs is based on a young F.B.I. student have to visit a prison and
meet with a manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his
victims. Biological Theory believes that some of us are born criminals and others are motivated by
their environment. It indicates that born criminals can also be identified by their bodies. In this
essay, I want to focus on the character Buffalo Bill and Dr. Hannibal and how he relates to the
biological theory.
2. The Silence of the Lambs – Buffalo Bill Character Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling is a student in
the FBI who worked hard to advance in her career is being asked to question Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a
psychiatrist who has in a maximum security isolation for 8 years for killing his victims and eating

his mind tricks and be able to manipulate him to help her solve another case of the new serial killer
by the name of Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill has killed about 5 females by skinning them and drowning
them in few lakes around the western US.
The movie starts with young Clarice training on what seems to be an early morning, right after she

disorder is defined as a personality disorder in which the person (usually a man) shows a lack of
conscience for wrongdoing and a lack of respect for the rights of others, in other words, he knows
what he's doing is wrong, he just doesn't care, and he lives by his own set of rules. This is evident
throughout the film when fails to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors and
repeatedly performs acts that are grounds for arrest. For instance, attacking and killing multiple
policemen. Another sign of this disorder is his deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of
aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure. Dr. Lecter is directly dishonest, however in
a way he's always arguably truthful. He deliberately gives misleading messages, but once they are
decoded, they are often hints at, or the blatant, truth. Lector's lack of remorse, as suggested by being
indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt or mistreated another proves another symptom of this
disorder. He does not reason or rationalize his own behavior; instead, he talks arrogantly with the
suggestion that it does not require rationalization. He

Summary Of Goodfellas And The Silence Of The Lambs
Cinematography has the potential to be so much more than just a means to tell a story. When applied
correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a museum.
Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise not be
possible. While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have mastered the
skill and artistry that cinematography can become. Two cinematographers that I feel use the camera
as a paint brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for his work in Martin
Scorsese's Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs. Both
cinematographers utilize the power of various levels of close–ups, medium and long shots, various
camera angles, jib and tracking movements, pan and tilt, and focus – just to name a few. While both
films feature killers, the overall plots are fairly different. Yet, through the masterful use of the
camera, both Ballhaus and Fujimoto are able to keep the viewer full engaged and excited to see
what is to come.
As previously mentioned, both Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs feature a killer and/or
killers as the main subjects. Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas is the story of Irish–Italian American,
Henry Hill, and how he lives day–to–day life as a member of the Mafia. Based on a true story, the
plot revolves around Henry and his two unstable friends Jimmy and Tommy as they gradually climb
the ladder from petty

Characterization Of Hannibal Lecter
Dr. Hannibal Lecter. It is a name that strikes terror in the hearts of all readers and movie watchers
alike. Said to be the most widely feared and awed fictional psychopaths of all times, he is a highly
qualified psychiatrist who eats people for the sake of amusement. But even with his cannibalistic
nature, the author Thomas Harris does not portray Dr. Lecter as the antagonist of his book, 'The
Silence of the Lambs'; he is more of a middleman, who though imprisoned hasn't lost his
impeccably polite ways, his mannerisms sometimes making you question whether he is actually
'crazy' at all. He makes eating another man's liver sound as though he were just eating another
delicacy from his favorite restaurant. He is a man capable of creating headlines ... Show more

They signify the metamorphosis of his character into that of a woman with each skinning and the
death of his older self whom he had grown to hate. His obsession with changing himself provides
great insight into what drove him to such madness.
Thomas Harris's latest introduction to the book featuring in the 25th year edition gives us a glance
into the creation of the character of Hannibal Lecter, inspired from a man that he met in a mental
institution years earlier. He also further explains how his childhood memories influenced the
building of Clarice Starling's personality.
A book that maintains suspense throughout with two frightening, evil and inhuman villains and a
flawed, human and yet extremely idealistic female protagonist with the perspective of no one in

Thematic Symbols In The Film 'Silence Of The Lambs'
One of the most successful horror films of all time, Silence of the Lambs has always been
something of a mystery. Themes of government sponsored brainwashing in the creation of serial
killers are so expertly hidden in plain sight. It is for this reason that Silence of the Lambs may be
considered one of the most rebellious and thrilling movies ever made. Perhaps the first image people
encountered, when the movie premiered in 1991, was the poster. It shows Jodie Foster's face with a
moth covering her mouth. Her eyes, usually blue, are red. Close examination of the faux skull
markings on the moth's head, reveals the skull to be made up of seven naked women. The moth and
its cousin the butterfly are probably the most important thematic symbols ... Show more content on

Ed Gein began robbing graves–keeping body parts as trophies, practicing necrophilia, and
experimenting with human taxidermy. Gein took the women's bodies back to his farm, peeled off
their faces and preserved the skin by putting oil on them. Gein would wear the faces and stare at
himself, dressing up with wigs jewelry and fake breasts. He then turned to murder, killing at least
two women in 1957. Gein inspired film characters Norman Bates (Psycho), James Gumb (The
Silence of the Lambs) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
It would be very convenient to be able to attribute all the horrible things that Hannibal does to the
fact that he's a sick psychopath with no redeeming features whatsoever. And for the most part, this is
the picture painted by the surface narrative. One look through the bullet proof glass, however,
reveals this to be another rather clever piece of staging.
At Crawford's first mention of the word Hannibal, Clarice automatically recites, what is now one of
the most recognizable catch–phrases of the film 'Hannibal the Cannibal.' We find out quite early on
that Hannibal eats his victims or his 'evidence' so there's an obvious explanation for his moniker. It
could be argued that Harris was indeed taking a metaphorical swipe at programs like MK Ultra that
seek to use trauma to control a civilian person's mind so they can be used to commit further

How Is Clarice Starling Selfish
Many words can describe Clarice Starling, but not selfish. She has many opportunities to put herself
ahead of everyone in her life, but not once does she take them. She risks her progress in school, her
own safety, and her beliefs to save women she does not know or seem to care for in general. As our
protagonist, we learn about her past which shows she has always been the type of person to put
others ahead of herself. Clarice shows she is selfless and that her own interests are not anywhere
near her top priority through many of her actions. Clarice has been self–sacrificing from a young
age. When discussing her childhood with Dr. Lecter, he asks her why she ran away with a horse. She
gave a simple answer: "They were going to kill her" (Harris 210). She knew the only way to save
her horse was to run away, even if that meant being moved away from all the family she had left and
being put in an orphanage. Not once did she think about herself, all she cared about was saving her
horse from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She gets in the mindset and tries to make connections with Catherine to truly understand her. She
wants to know her the best she can, just to find any tiny clue. She makes the connection about losing

easily been "a self–absorbed, blunted, boarding school kid" (Harris 192), like the kind she did not
get along with. She does well to look past this prejudice and realize that they were similar in many
ways. Looking past this helped Clarice find clues that others could have not. When Catherine's
mother accuses her of being a thief, she lets it go because she wants to do whatever she can to help.

Made for American TV, Silent Predators begins in 1979 with a very short scene where a man whose

load he is carrying in the large wooden crate which is firmly secured to the back of the truck, and he

I personally don't have a problem with snakes (although I'd not want come face to face with a
dangerous breed) so I was able to happily watch the film from start to finish. I also noted that it
appeared no snakes were mis–handled or badly treated during the filming process....well that's how
it comes across, it appearing that the creatures were respected. One thing watching Silent Predators
did bring home to me is, thinking about ordinary rattlesnakes rather than the hybrid in the film, is
how careful one would have to be when strolling through the countryside in parts of the USA where
these creatures are rife. Best to keep your eyes/ears well tuned, and stay out of long grass I suppose.
Even though Silent Predators is an exciting, absorbing and largely well–made film, it is rather
predictable in that the format is the same as usual....killer (in this case snakes) on the loose, some
people die, there's a good guy and a bad guy plus a romance tickling around the edges. The ending
is also predictable but missing something....I was hoping for a twist or an unsolved cliffhanger to

The Godfather, The Exorcist, And The Silence Of The Lambs
The Godfather, The Exorcist, and The Silence of the Lambs are three films that are often given the
title "greatest of all time" in their respective genre, for very good reason. Each film consists of
scenes that are crafted so unforgettably that the scenes leave each viewer with a sense of awe, shock,
and horror when each scene is carefully examined. The Godfather, distributed in 1972 by Paramount
Pictures, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who in an interview said in regards to his
filmmaking that "If you don't take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful,
that hasn't been seen before?" (1). The Godfather certainly presented cinema with iconic and
memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen largely due to the new and risky
ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather's narrative. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the
bones of audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a
tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema. The scenes in The Exorcist were
particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences
who came from religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never
before had a film brought Americans face–to–face with The Devil, Hell, and sin by means of horror.
Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror
made each scene very memorable, particularly when

Clarice Starling
When discussing feminist characters, it's easy to get caught up on the more overtly feminine
personalities, such as Elle Woods from "Legally Blond" or perhaps Dorothy Gale from "The Wizard
of Oz". However, the 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs", an "...intense, gritty crime odyssey,"
(Grow, 2016) supplies a strong, feminist character who isn't afraid to get down to business.
Throughout the film, Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, silently breaks gender roles in order
to compete with the male authority that she faces all around her. From avoiding suggesting gazes
and unwanted sexual advances, to holding one's ground in a male workplace, Starling takes on a
role that is the constant recipient of the male scrutiny, impulse, and hostility. Clarice is placed into a
distinctly feminist role by the use of powerful cinematography, the actions of her male counterparts
and Clarice's own actions while in the face of ethical adversity. The story concerns the young
Clarice Starling, a promising FBI cadet at a training academy located in Quantico, Virginia. Jack
Crawford of the Bureau's Behavioral Science Unit assigns Starling to befriend the notorious
Hannibal Lecter, a former psychiatrist and imprisoned cannibalistic killer. Starling is forced to

responsible for skinning young women just after murdering them. The transgender killer takes the

European Starling or Sturnus Vulgaris Essay
The Common Starling, otherwise known as Sturnus Vulgaris or European Starling, is a medium
sized songbird that is a member of the Sturnidae bird family. These birds are known to mimic
sounds from other species and can even mimic human speech when held in captivity. They are very
stout in their build and have short tails. They change color depending on the season, such as purple–
green feathers in the summer and brown feathers with white spots in the winter. Common Starlings
originated in Europe, specifically Norway, Russia, and Siberia. During the winter, they migrated to
northern Africa and India. From there, Starlings have been introduced to several places such as

When a flock of them land in an agricultural area, they do a considerable amount of damage to
crops such as Cherries, Olives, Grapes, etc. They also damage wheat fields by digging up grain and
eating the seeds. Starlings can transmit diseases to livestock and humans such as transmissible
gastroenteritis virus, salmonella, and blastomycosis. Histoplasmosis, a fungal respiratory disease, is
another health concern. It's occurs during large winter roosts with these birds. The mass accrue of
droppings enrich the soil where the fungus grows. When disturbed, the spores from the fungus can
become airborne. If inhaled, Histoplasmosis can be contracted. Most cases are mild, but on occasion
it can cause blindness and even death.
Starlings are extremely aggressive and will compete with other species of birds as well as their own.
They attack other birds and their nests, sometimes even taking over their nest as their own. Eggs in
those nests are usually destroyed by the Starling. Because of the Starlings aggressive ways, there
has been a decrease of native birds.
Although Starlings cause numerous problems, they have also been shown to benefit the
environment. Starlings will eat just about anything from seeds to small insects and other
invertebrates. This greatly helps control the pest problems in agricultural areas.
Numerous control methods have been advised to stop the expansion of Starlings. These methods

The Shawshank Redemption In The Movie : Silence Of The Lambs
Think back, what are some of the most memorable movies that you have ever watched? The
Shawshank Redemption may immediately come to mind, or perhaps Forrest Gump might barge
through that door first. Regardless of your answer to the question previously posed, there were
reasons why those two examples captivated people the way that they did and still do. Timeless
movies all happen to share one thing in common, they have the capability to leave a profound
message on its viewers. By eloquently excavating the core of the human being, the directors main
goal of hijacking your attention, is successfully achieved. In the 1991 psychological thriller, Silence
of the Lambs, director Johnathan Demme does not fail to fall short of reaching these means. By
triggering our primal instincts in fear, fornication, and the fight or flight response, this nearly three–
decade old movie still leaves viewers trembling and hearts quivering.
Silence of the Lambs begins with the spotlight on a female FBI trainee named Clarice Starling.
While in Quantico, Virginia, completing her training to work for the bureau, she gets contacted by
her superior, Agent Jack Crawford. Upon talking to Crawford, he assigns Starling the daunting task
of questioning the infamous, cannibalistic murderer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The purpose of her
interrogation is to gain firsthand insight into the mind of a killer; in the hopes that the info she
gathers will help unravel the case of an active serial killer named Buffalo Bill. Starling follows his
orders and arrives at Dr. Hannibal Lecter's cell at a mental ward. The intellectually advanced Dr.
Lecter ends up not taking kindly to her analyzing, and eventually asks her to leave. However, upon
walking away from his cell, an inmate decides to throw his unborn children onto Starling's hair.
Lecter notices this and out of compassion, he decides to give her another chance to question him.
This time around things go a lot smoother, and Lecter, even offers her a promising lead. Dr.
Hannibal Lecter's information leads to a storage shed where Clarice Starling discovers a severed
head with a Sphinx moth lodged in its throat. After her discovery, she is informed by Lecter that this
was in fact one of Buffalo Bill's victims.

Exceptionality and Geniuses
The term 'genius' is associated with an array of diverse connotations. When reviewing the literature,
it is vital to note that a specific definition and approach to measure whether or not a person is a
genius, is rather complex. Garber, M. (2002) declares "genius" as a special inflation and over time
has "become a commodity, an ambition, and even a lifestyle." The underlying question is: how, and
what makes an individual a prodigy? One may argue that completing an intelligence quotient (IQ)
test will suffice and determine whether an individual exemplifies genius–like tendencies, as others
argue otherwise. There are tendencies and certain behaviours that geniuses exhibit differing them
from other individuals who are more or less considered "normal". Therefore, relationships with
geniuses tend to differ as their intelligence and typical demeanor is peculiar. In the film The Silence
of the Lambs directed by Jonathan Demme, one of the main characters, Hannibal Lecter portrays
unusual behaviour. Based on his questionable character, one may argue that genius–like behaviour is
conspicuous; this is seen through his relationships, his intellect, and overall demeanor.
The relationships observed in the movie The Silence of the Lambs depicts thoughtful but suspicious
intent. A female FBI trainee, Clarice Starling was put on a case to get to know Hannibal Lecter's
character; his thought process, responses, and interactions were monitored thoroughly. Clarice

Suspense is a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in waiting a decision or

Hannibal Lecter Villain
Hannibal Lecter was the most feared psychopath created by Thomas Harris. Prior to the release of
The Silence of The Lamb America thought he was another fictional character. After viewing the
movie they began to realize Hannibal Lecter was based off Doctor Alfredo Balli Travino. Travino
was convicted and sentenced to death for the manslaughter of his gay lover Rangel. The crime of
passion included Travino slicing his neck and draining his blood and methodically chopping
Rangel's body into pieces and shoving him into a box. Later he drove to a relative's farm where he
and a farm hand buried the box. Upon the discovery of the oddly marked grave, by another worker,
the police were informed. They went undercover to Travino's practice and arrested him. Immoral
actions are not only in the real world, they are also depicted into novels. From fairy tales to love

being the rumors of Othello having an affair with Emilia, Iago's wife. Iago's plan is to get Othello to
believe that Desdemona is unfaithful to him. Iago's reasoning, jealousy and revenge, is what
characterizes him as evil. "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps
perpetrate it" (Martin Luther King Jr). He who thinks evil thoughts is as responsible as one who acts
upon them. Iago himself has passive contemplations that transform into concrete

Silence Of The Lambs Comparison
"Hey, what movie do you want to watch tonight?" A common phrase spoken amongst most
households on a Friday night; families getting ready to watch the newest animation, blockbuster, or
even a romantic comedy. Yet, most individuals pass off the idea of watch a horrific, nightmarish
movie before he or she falls asleep. Well, my mother and I do just that. We always bicker over what
we want to watch, like an old married couple, but our fights are over a physical horror movie like
Nightmare on Elm Street (her choice pick) and a psychological horror film such as Silence of the
Lambs (my choice). These two movies, though within the same genre, are completely different. A
Nightmare on Elm Street is simply. But, Silence of the Lambs, is always, rather quite frightening.
The superiority of Silence of Lambs emerges when the lights in your room stay on till dawn. Dr.

The special ingredient to movies, conversations, or forms of media that set it apart. My English
teacher once said something along the same lines, he said, "flava." This fun, little phrase was stuck
in my head for days, worse than "Call Me Maybe." If a movie doesn't have this same effect then is it
even worth seeing? Silence of the Lambs is yes. It's "flava" is the themes of taboo; there
cannibalism, which is a worldwide cultural taboo, there is also a transvestite, mental health issues,
the topic of gay relationship, and so much more. When these taboos are put on top of murder and
psychological games, you've got a sundae of a well–done horror movie. Silence of the Lambs
discusses taboos that are only talked about between adults and he or she may even deny it. This adds
edginess and a sense of there are things so outside of our comfort zone. Viewers reanalyze what his
or her life really is and the darkness hidden within. The introspection of self after being exposed to
taboos separates Silence of the Lambs from many films, including Nightmare on Elm

Silence of the Lambs film analysis explores Hannibal Lecter character

  • 1. Analysis Of Silence Of The Lambs ART 105: Film as Art Critique One Silence of the Lambs: Eating Other Movies with Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti Silence of the Lambs is viewed as one of the greatest horror–thriller films, as it has won Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Some of the people in our ART 105 class might not even want to see this movie due to its realism of such a dark and painful story, as well as some of the graphic material shown. This movie, however, is one of the best horror films of the century, in my humble opinion. I enjoy this movie thoroughly and often watch it in my spare time, so I have plenty of opinions on every aspect of this movie. During this entire movie, all the main characters, to me, were all very interesting, as the two(ish) antagonists are, to this day, traumatizing those who see them without having seen the movie. Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), the protagonist, is a very hard worker who is blunt and concerned more about education and catching a killer, as she rejects advances by both Dr. Chilton (Anthony Heald), the asylum owner, and an entomologist named Pilcher (Paul Lazar) , who ask about her personal life. She is often enthralled with catching Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) that even in one of the first scenes, she already has her sights on him. She soon dedicates every spare moment trying to dig deeper, to find the truth and to save lives. Also, Hannibal Lector (Anthony ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Silence Of The Lambs Compare And Contrast Essay "The last thing you want is Hannibal Lecter inside your head." It is a daunting task to effectively transfer textual tonality from page to screen. Balancing proper visual interpretations of the text with original insights is not an easy procedure, and not every filmmaker is equipped with the artistic skills necessary to complete such an undertaking. Alejandro Jodorowsky's wildly unsuccessful attempt at adapting Frank Herbert's Dune, for example, ended in bankruptcy for the studio and premature cancellation of the project due to the extensive runtime the film was to have in accordance with the length of the book. Many filmic adaptations fail in their inability to recapture and translate what originally gave a text literary merit. Jonathan Demme's adaptation of the quintessential Thomas Harris novel Silence of the Lambs is so well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each creative, Demme and Harris, utilize the conventions of their respective platform not for the creation of an identical character, but an identical feeling. In both texts, Lecter executes his visions of control, and both artists prove themselves capable of demonstrating these ideas to an audience. Roger Ebert describes the character of Lecter as having a "speaking voice with the precision of a man so arrogant he can barely be bothered to address the sloppy intelligence of the ordinary person." He is intelligent and knows it, craving control for apparently no other reason than because it is there. There are, however, major discrepancies between Harris's one–eyed, eleven–fingered Dr. Lecter Demme's subdued criminal mastermind. The intimately paternal relationship between Lecter and Starling that guides the narrative remains constant between iterations even as Lecter changes. Between literature and film, he acts different, looks different, but is essential same character, evoking the same response from the audience of both book and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Film Silence Of The Lambs By Jonathan Demme The Silence of The Lambs is a 1991 horror film directed by Jonathan Demme. It revolves around a rookie FBI Agent Clarice Starling and her quest to find the mysterious serial killer Buffullo Bill. With the help and manipulation of a cannibal psychitrist, Dr Hannibal Lecter, Starling is able to understand the mystery surronding Buffolo Bill. I must start by saying that this was truly an excellent film and I would give it a 4.5 out of a rating of 5. The intense and eerie music used really helped to establish the classic horror genre. However, this film wouldnt have been half as good without Antony Hopkins playing the infamous Dr Hannibal lecter. Hopkins plays the psychotic cannibal with so much flair and charisma that you would for root and symphatise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Silence Of The Lambs Forensic Evidence Silence of the Lambs Forensic Evidence The film "Silence of the Lambs" based off the novel written by Thomas Harris has a story plot that involves many situations where forensic evidence is used. The film follows an FBI trainee named Clarice Starling trying to hunt down a serial killer using scientific methods to solve the crime. One method that was used during the investigation was the profile of the criminal. While observing the previous victims' bodies, Clarice discovered the common factor that the unsub would always shove a specific moth species down the victim's throat. This important piece of evidence was the smoking gun that resulted in finally finding Buffalo Bill in his house. If it was not for the observation of the moths being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the river was not the exact location of where the murders took place, the people were still able to get clues on where the crimes may have happened. Also, by dumping the bodies in the river this trait let the detectives come to the conclusion that the unsub was an organized killer. This means that he was smart enough to know that the river would erase many traces of evidence that would make it harder for the FBI to solve the case. A third scientific technique used in "Silence of the Lambs" was identifying the killer's trophy. Some murderers keep a souvenir from their victim that reminds them of their crime. After looking at the victims, Clarice discovered that Buffalo Bill's trophy was keeping the skin of the women that he murdered. Later in the movie, Clarice visited one of the homes of a missing victim. While studying her room looking for clues, Clarice comes to the conclusion that Buffalo Bill was skinning the women to make a bodysuit. Not only did seeing the moths in the killer's home draw a red flag, but seeing the sewing kit also gave a hint the she had found Buffalo Bill. • 5. Who Is The Antagonist In The Silence Of The Lambs Part One: Director & Writer The Silence of the Lambs is directed by Jonathan Demme, with the screenplay written by Ted Tally and the novel it is based on (of the same name) written by Thomas Harris. Other notable films directed by Jonathan Demme include Philadelphia (1993) and The Manchurian Candidate (2004). Ted Tally has also written the screenplays for Red Dragon (2002), All the Pretty Horses (2000), and The Juror (1996), in addition to being a creative consultant for the popular movies Shrek the Third (2007) and Madagascar (2005). Part Two: Narrative Devices In The Silence of the Lambs, there are many narrative devices used and several parallel stories. The first parallel story is of FBI agent–in–training Clarice Starling's interactions with cannibalistic serial killer and psychiatrist Hannibal Lector as she attempts to get him to give her information. This is where the other parallel story comes into play–Clarice (and the rest of the FBI) are trying to catch another serial killer (this one still on the loose), Buffalo Bill. Because Hannibal has knowledge of and/or is capable of profiling Bill, these two stories continue to interact as Clarice (and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The other main conflict in the film is between Clarice and Hannibal. Dr. Hannibal Lecter's The Silence Of The Lambs Title of Paper In the book silence of the lambs (Harris, 1988) as well as the movie (Demme,1991) "The Silence of the Lambs" deals with a young FBI cadet who is sent to interview a captured madman to find out about a serial killer who is stripping the skin from his female victims after they die. One character with psychological disorders is Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill is a serial killer and the main antagonist in the film. His latest victim is Catherine Martin. Sexual discrimination and an ignorance of others on their individual human complexities band these two characters together. Lecter's "serial killer" image and Starling's innocent appearance due to her femininity perpetrates these two characters as being outcasts in society. First and foremost, Hannibal Lecter shares similar qualities to characters such as Norman Bates, Frankenstein, and King Kong. All of these characters behave according their own natures, and in doing so, nothing that these characters do are morally "evil" in any sense, but rather resulting circumstances of being entirely misunderstood by society. In a strong sense, these characters can be connected to the perception of mental illness, particularly within society during the turn of the 21st century. These characters are all held to certain expectations, however when they are put in a situation where they are given a choice with their own free will, nothing "evil" comes out of it. In fact, when King Kong was given the choice, he chooses to rescue Fay Wray. Frankenstein is only a result of what one man in society made him out to be while Norman Bates always made an effort to be alone, but was left as an outcast who only wanted to adhere to his mother's wishes. He battled within his own mind and consequentially, was neglected from the outside. Lecter was seen by society as a mass serial killer, however when Starling treats him as a human being instead of just a "serial killer" and does not put a damper on his vast intelligence like others, Lecter makes his own willing attempt to help her. The characters in thriller films often include criminals, people down on their luck, innocent victims, psychos, and cops. "The Silence of the Lambs" isn't just that, it best fits under its sub–genre of a psychological thriller, which is defined as a thriller story which emphasizes the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states. Which is very true for this film considering that there isn't one, but two unstable characters, Hannibal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Silence Of The Lambs Thomas Harris Analysis Silence of the Lambs is a mystery drama based off the novel by the same name, which was written by Thomas Harris. Within the story, the viewer is introduced to two different types of serial killer through the medium of Clarice Starling, the film's protagonist. Though previous works state that Hannibal "does not fit any psychological profile", Hannibal seems to fit the stereotypical tropes presented by the media on serial killers. Through Starling's interactions with him, the audience can see that Hannibal is methodical and clever, able to steer and manipulate his conversations with Starling in the direction as he pleases, yet courteous and self–aware as he apologizes for another inmate's actions. This advanced mental capability and stability makes the infamous serial killer the perfect foil for the actual antagonist of the story, Buffalo Bill. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Buffalo Bill, whose real name is Jame Gumb, is a fictional character who was created by Thomas Harris to serve as the overarching antagonist of both the film and novel. Thomas Harris seemed to have drawn from a variety of different real life serial killers during the creation of this character. For example, just like serial killer Jerry Brudos, Jame was abused as a child and abandoned by his family, left to travel from home to home through the foster care system. Also like Jerry Brudos, Jame would later find the tools to continue his deviance through the institution that society places him in for his deviance. As Jame grew into adulthood, his character seems to be more and more like Edmund Kemper. Though Edmund Kemper was described as an intelligent man while Jame seemed sub–bar in that aspect, he and Jame share a fragile sense of worth. More importantly however, is that they both outright shared similar first murders, as they both apathetically killed their grandparents to see what it was like to murder someone. As stated ... Clarice is an FBI in training, and she agrees to practice psychiatry with one of the most violent, brilliant, and dangerous criminals ever. He is shown biting an officers face, and then wearing that officers peeled off face to escape imprisonment (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Lector is portrayed a heartless criminal with no redeeming qualities. Furthermore, the depiction of the mental health profession in general in the movie is also negative regarding the character Dr. Chilton. Dr. Chilton throughout the movie is not concerned with the well–being or treatment of his patients and is more concerned with his own gain from the notoriety of his patients. During a press conference about the Buffalo Bill case, Dr. Chilton takes credit for acquiring information from Dr. Lector, however it was Starling who did all the work (Bozman et al., 1991). Dr. Chilton also described Dr. Lector as a "prized asset" in terms of research, but it was said in a manner that completely dehumanized Dr. Lector (Bozman et al., 1991). When applied correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a museum. Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise not be possible. While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have mastered the skill and artistry that cinematography can become. Two cinematographers that I feel use the camera as a paint brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for his work in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs. Both cinematographers utilize the power of various levels of close–ups, medium and long shots, various camera angles, jib and tracking movements, pan and tilt, and focus – just to name a few. While both films feature killers, the overall plots are fairly different. Yet, through the masterful use of the camera, both Ballhaus and Fujimoto are able to keep the viewer full engaged and excited to see what is to come. As previously mentioned, both Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs feature a killer and/or killers as the main subjects. Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas is the story of Irish–Italian American, Henry Hill, and how he lives day–to–day life as a member of the Mafia. The Godfather certainly presented cinema with iconic and memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen largely due to the new and risky ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather's narrative. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the bones of audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema. The scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences who came from religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face–to–face with The Devil, Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene very memorable, particularly when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Clarice Starling When discussing feminist characters, it's easy to get caught up on the more overtly feminine personalities, such as Elle Woods from "Legally Blond" or perhaps Dorothy Gale from "The Wizard of Oz". However, the 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs", an "...intense, gritty crime odyssey," (Grow, 2016) supplies a strong, feminist character who isn't afraid to get down to business. Throughout the film, Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, silently breaks gender roles in order to compete with the male authority that she faces all around her. From avoiding suggesting gazes and unwanted sexual advances, to holding one's ground in a male workplace, Starling takes on a role that is the constant recipient of the male scrutiny, impulse, and hostility. Clarice is placed into a distinctly feminist role by the use of powerful cinematography, the actions of her male counterparts and Clarice's own actions while in the face of ethical adversity. The story concerns the young Clarice Starling, a promising FBI cadet at a training academy located in Quantico, Virginia. Jack Crawford of the Bureau's Behavioral Science Unit assigns Starling to befriend the notorious Hannibal Lecter, a former psychiatrist and imprisoned cannibalistic killer. Starling is forced to cooperate with Dr. Lecter, as his insight proves useful in identifying "Buffalo Bill"; the serial killer responsible for skinning young women just after murdering them. European Starling or Sturnus Vulgaris Essay The Common Starling, otherwise known as Sturnus Vulgaris or European Starling, is a medium sized songbird that is a member of the Sturnidae bird family. These birds are known to mimic sounds from other species and can even mimic human speech when held in captivity. They are very stout in their build and have short tails. They change color depending on the season, such as purple– green feathers in the summer and brown feathers with white spots in the winter. Common Starlings originated in Europe, specifically Norway, Russia, and Siberia. During the winter, they migrated to northern Africa and India. When a flock of them land in an agricultural area, they do a considerable amount of damage to crops such as Cherries, Olives, Grapes, etc. They also damage wheat fields by digging up grain and eating the seeds. Starlings can transmit diseases to livestock and humans such as transmissible gastroenteritis virus, salmonella, and blastomycosis. Histoplasmosis, a fungal respiratory disease, is another health concern. It's occurs during large winter roosts with these birds. The mass accrue of droppings enrich the soil where the fungus grows. When disturbed, the spores from the fungus can become airborne. If inhaled, Histoplasmosis can be contracted. Most cases are mild, but on occasion it can cause blindness and even death. Starlings are extremely aggressive and will compete with other species of birds as well as their own. They attack other birds and their nests, sometimes even taking over their nest as their own. Eggs in those nests are usually destroyed by the Starling. Because of the Starlings aggressive ways, there has been a decrease of native birds. Although Starlings cause numerous problems, they have also been shown to benefit the environment. Starlings will eat just about anything from seeds to small insects and other invertebrates. This greatly helps control the pest problems in agricultural areas. Numerous control methods have been advised to stop the expansion of Starlings. These methods ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Shawshank Redemption In The Movie : Silence Of The Lambs Think back, what are some of the most memorable movies that you have ever watched? The Shawshank Redemption may immediately come to mind, or perhaps Forrest Gump might barge through that door first. Regardless of your answer to the question previously posed, there were reasons why those two examples captivated people the way that they did and still do. Timeless movies all happen to share one thing in common, they have the capability to leave a profound message on its viewers. By eloquently excavating the core of the human being, the directors main goal of hijacking your attention, is successfully achieved. In the 1991 psychological thriller, Silence of the Lambs, director Johnathan Demme does not fail to fall short of reaching these means. By triggering our primal instincts in fear, fornication, and the fight or flight response, this nearly three– decade old movie still leaves viewers trembling and hearts quivering. Silence of the Lambs begins with the spotlight on a female FBI trainee named Clarice Starling. While in Quantico, Virginia, completing her training to work for the bureau, she gets contacted by her superior, Agent Jack Crawford. Upon talking to Crawford, he assigns Starling the daunting task of questioning the infamous, cannibalistic murderer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The purpose of her interrogation is to gain firsthand insight into the mind of a killer; in the hopes that the info she gathers will help unravel the case of an active serial killer named Buffalo Bill. Starling follows his orders and arrives at Dr. Hannibal Lecter's cell at a mental ward. The intellectually advanced Dr. Lecter ends up not taking kindly to her analyzing, and eventually asks her to leave. However, upon walking away from his cell, an inmate decides to throw his unborn children onto Starling's hair. Lecter notices this and out of compassion, he decides to give her another chance to question him. This time around things go a lot smoother, and Lecter, even offers her a promising lead. Dr. Hannibal Lecter's information leads to a storage shed where Clarice Starling discovers a severed head with a Sphinx moth lodged in its throat. After her discovery, she is informed by Lecter that this was in fact one of Buffalo Bill's victims. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Silence Of The Lambs Exceptionality and Geniuses The term 'genius' is associated with an array of diverse connotations. When reviewing the literature, it is vital to note that a specific definition and approach to measure whether or not a person is a genius, is rather complex. Garber, M. (2002) declares "genius" as a special inflation and over time has "become a commodity, an ambition, and even a lifestyle." The underlying question is: how, and what makes an individual a prodigy? One may argue that completing an intelligence quotient (IQ) test will suffice and determine whether an individual exemplifies genius–like tendencies, as others argue otherwise. There are tendencies and certain behaviours that geniuses exhibit differing them from other individuals who are more or less considered "normal". Therefore, relationships with geniuses tend to differ as their intelligence and typical demeanor is peculiar. In the film The Silence of the Lambs directed by Jonathan Demme, one of the main characters, Hannibal Lecter portrays unusual behaviour. Based on his questionable character, one may argue that genius–like behaviour is conspicuous; this is seen through his relationships, his intellect, and overall demeanor. The relationships observed in the movie The Silence of the Lambs depicts thoughtful but suspicious intent. A female FBI trainee, Clarice Starling was put on a case to get to know Hannibal Lecter's character; his thought process, responses, and interactions were monitored thoroughly. Clarice ... Essay on Evaluation of The Silence Of The Lambs Evaluation of The Silence Of The Lambs The film which I am evaluating is called "The Silence of the Lambs" and is based on Thomas Harris' novel and is directed by Jonathan Demme. The film was shot in Pittsburgh and is set in West Virginia. In the making of this film careful research was carried out in bringing each character to life especially Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb. This included the actors being at crime scenes and viewing files about previous serial killers in order to fit into their characters properly. Jonathan Demme cleverly blended together different characteristics from other mass murderers in order to make Buffalo Bill realistic and fearsome. In the film "Psycho" Norman Bates uses ... The three main ways an editor can make a movie suspenseful is by using score, camera shots, and setting. The Silence of the Lambs is a movie that has scenes showing different camera angles, that make the viewers sit on the edge of their seats. The Silence Of The Lambs Essay The Silence of The Lambs Clarice Starling, a student preparing for a life in the FBI, hunts a serial killer by use of vague information given to her by an incarcerated psychologist. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter relays information to Clarice in exchange for information about herself. The killer, known only as "Buffalo Bill", kidnaps large women, keeps them alive for a few days, and finally skins them. Clarice works against time as Buffalo Bill takes his newest victim, a U.S. Senator's daughter, and the countdown to death begins. As a result of this book I realized some odd, yet successful methods used by the FBI to catch killers. I also discovered how corrupt some branches of the government can actually be. I don't believe I received any enlightenment from this book. I did, however, feel pretty good that I actually finished it. This book did affirm a few of my views on life. such as "Never judge a book by it's cover." No matter how much someone appears to be your friend, you can never be absolutely sure. I didn't receive anything from this book except the sheer enjoyment of reading it. And also a new found respect for our justice system. I must disagree with the main character's choice of pursuing Buffalo Bill through his own basement. I, myself, would have called for backup. She could have easily been killed by him and Catherine's chances of living would have died with her. This is a classic example of rushing in without thinking, like playing a

  • 39. Hannibal Lecter Villain Hannibal Lecter was the most feared psychopath created by Thomas Harris. Prior to the release of The Silence of The Lamb America thought he was another fictional character. After viewing the movie they began to realize Hannibal Lecter was based off Doctor Alfredo Balli Travino. Travino was convicted and sentenced to death for the manslaughter of his gay lover Rangel. The crime of passion included Travino slicing his neck and draining his blood and methodically chopping Rangel's body into pieces and shoving him into a box. Later he drove to a relative's farm where he and a farm hand buried the box. Upon the discovery of the oddly marked grave, by another worker, the police were informed. They went undercover to Travino's practice and arrested him. Immoral actions are not only in the real world, they are also depicted into novels.
