Topic A: Tell us about someone who has
made an impact on your life and explain
how this person is important to you.
Topic B: Choose an issue of importance
to you and explain the significance of that
issue to yourself, your family, your
community, or your generation. Can be
personal, school related, local, political, or
international.

Testing: Highest ACT or SAT score
Recommendations: Both should be from
academic teachers who know you will and can
address your particular strengths and qualities.
Extra-curriculars: In-school and out-of-school
activities
Essay: How are you unique? Are there any
special circumstances they should know about?
Why should they choose you?
Transcript: Colleges look at how challenging
your courses have been and how you’ve done in
them. They also look for continuity in course
work.
5. COLLEGE TERMS
MAJOR A student’s concentrated field of study
DEGREE A certificate of completion of a required number of course
credit hours
PUBLIC SCHOOL A college or university that receives the build of its
funding from state tax dollars
PRIVATE SCHOOL A college or university that is funded through
student tuition, donations, endowments, and gifts
COMMUNITY COLLEGE Two-year school with programs for associate
degrees
PROPRIETARY COLLEGE A school that seeks to make a profit off of
their students. The University of Phoenix and ITT Technical Institute are
examples.
ALUMNI Former graduates of a school
COLLEGE GUIDEBOOK Printed material, often in the form of a large
book, that lists a large number of different colleges and programs
PSAT Preliminary SAT; test taken in a student’s sophomore and junior
year in high school
Highest score possible on the ACT 36
Highest score possible on the SAT 2400
6. COLLEGE TERMS
TEXAS COMMON APPLICATION (ApplyTexas) The application used by all Texas public schools and
some private schools
TRANSCRIPT A record of a student’s courses and grades, including their overall GPA
RECOMMENDED HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM A minimum of 24 high school credits; required to graduate
from any Texas high school
AP Advance Placement; advanced courses that give students the ability to test out of a certain subject
and obtain college credit
CREDIT HOURS Credit given for successfully completing college classes. Most degrees require at least
120 credit hours.
TUITION The cost of a college university or university class
SCHOLARSHIP Financial assistance that does not require repayment; often awarded based on a
student’s abilities or need
LOANS Financial assistance that must be repaid
GRANTS Financial assistance that does not require repayment
FAFSA Free Application For Federal Student Aid; must be filled
EFC Expected Family Contribution; the amount that a student’s family is expected to contribute toward the
cost of a college education
APPEAL LETTER A letter sent by a student to the financial aid office requesting reconsideration of the
amount of financial aid awarded
COMMUTER A student who lives off campus (either at home or independently) and travels to their college
during the day to take classes
CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT Current attendance at more than one institution at the same time
7. COLLEGE TERMS
COURSE CATALOG Material printed by a college or university that lays out information
such as fees and course descriptions
ACCEPTANCE LETTER A letter sent to an applicant letting them know they were
admitted
ROLLING ADMISSION Applications are reviewed as they arrive in the college’s
admissions office. With this type of admissions, the earlier an application is
submitted, the better.
EARLY DECISION A student makes a binding commitment when they apply that if they
are accepted, they will attend
EARLY ACTION If a student sends their application in by an early deadline, they will be
notified of their application status in December rather than May
WAITLISTED An applicant is not denied, but will be admitted if a space becomes
available
ACADEMIC ADVISOR A faculty member in a student’s field of study who assists in
building their course schedules and degree plans
REGISTRAR The record keeper at a college or university
FINANCIAL AID COUNSELOR A university staff member assigned to handle a
student’s financial aid case and provide advice
RETENTION RATE The percentage of students who start at a school and go on to the
next year(s) at the same college
GRADUATION RATE The percentage of students who graduate from a 4-year
university in 6 years or less
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Activities which are not part of a student’s
academic course work
