Coastal Landscape Processes
1. What are the different processes that shape our
coast to form distinct landscapes?
Learning Objectives
• To know that different processes change coastal landscapes
• To understand how these processes can change coastal landscapes
8. What are the different processes that shape
our coast to form distinct landscapes?
• There are a number of processes that effect the coast
and these are split into marine (coastal) processes and
land processes.
9. Did you have any of these?
1. Marine processes shape the coast:
a. Waves erode the land
b. Waves transport eroded material
c. Waves deposit eroded material
2. Land processes shape the coast:
a. Weathering
b. Mass movement
10. Working in the groups below you have 15 minutes to prepare a poster/
powerpoint slide(s)/ annotate photos on you iPad (use props - play doh) to
explain how your designated processes shapes the coastal landscape
Group A Group B Process – Marine (sea)
A1 pair B1 pair Wave erosion – hydraulic action, abrasion,
solution and attrition p.18
A2 pair B2 pair Wave transport – types are traction,
saltation, suspension and solution; along
the coast called longshore drift p.19 and 24
A3 pain A3 pair Wave deposition p. 19 and iPad
Process - Land
A4 pair B4 pair Weathering – mechanical, chemical and
biological p. 18
A5 pair / triplet B5 pair / triplet Mass Movement – rock fall, slumping and
sliding SHOWBIE shared folder p19
11. Homework
•Find out what happened at Holbeck Hall Hotel in
1993.
•Print off the photo and write a short paragraph
about what happened there!
