2. THE PROBLEM
• SEA LEVEL RISE DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND
ICE CAP MELT
• Sea level rise is caused by two things:
• 1. Thermal expansion – when the ocean
gets warmer it expands causing the sea
level to rise.
• 2. The melting of land-based ice (mountain
glaciers and polar ice sheets). As this ice
melts it has the potential to significantly
increase global sea levels.
• Most of the recent increases in thermal
expansion of the ocean and land ice melt
are consequences of human caused climate
change.
3. THE
PROBLEM
(CONT.)
• Can We Stop Sea Level Rise?
• In the short term, no, because of
our excessive burning of fossil
fuels, we are committed to most of
the sea level rise that will occur in
the next 50-100+ years and there
may not be much we can do to
stop the rise. In the long term, we
can reduce our carbon footprint so
as to help future generations.
5. • To create eco-friendly cement
statues that act as a marker for
future sea level rise
• This can serve multiple
functions
• A nice art piece to be observed
• A way to garner awareness for
the issue
• And a base for coral growth
when fully/partial submerged.
My Proposal:
8. Miami, Florida
• Miami ranks #1 in terms of assets exposed to
coastal flooding according to the Organization
for Economic Co-Operation and Development.
This is primarily due to extensive coastal
development at sea level.
• This coupled with its frequent storms make
Florida an area of great concern.
9. NEW YORK
CITY, NEW
YORK
• A densely populated area that has a great deal
of public transport along with travel by foot.
• The New York Parks can be a great place to put
these statues and could highly contrast with the
surrounding area.
• Finally, there is a high chance
of widespread coverage for the piece. This
would further assist
12. A Beach
Installation
• Likely to be heavily affected I
would put an installation that
uses something like a waist
bound floatie to show the
extent of sea level rise
13. A
Park Installation
• Bound to be much more
inland I want to depiction of
relaxation. Mimicking the
picnics that happen in a park,
but having stark differences
in attire.
14. A City Street
Installation
• I want these installations to
be a quick way to peak
interest. Not overt and in the
way, but an art piece when
observed can be seen as
almost "out of place"
16. 2-3 Years:
• For planning, financing, and communicating
with the governing powers of each area
• For the
actual creation and implementation of the
artwork
1-2 Years:
