The Implementation Gap Between Theory And Practice Of...
Overview of Topic:
Sustainability is somewhat of a contentious issue within heritage planning. It is widely used, but not
always well understood. This essay proposal uses this term to mean balancing the needs of current
society with the preservation of current resources to improve cultural vitality, social equality,
environmental responsibility and economic vitality (Letourneau, 2016). Each of these pillars
contains several aspects, such as innovation and ecological balance, which contribute to the overall
success of a community. Heritage must be protected in a holistic and multidisciplinary way, which
engages the community and transfers to policy, practice and implementation.
Research Question:
How has the implementation gap between theory and practice of heritage planning contribute to the
goal of sustainability?
Overview of Research Design:
The research will follow the structure of four organisational sections: a review of relevant literature,
an overview of applicable government policies, a case study and an analysis of theoretical and
historical approaches. Theory and historical approaches will be explored through a review of
relevant literature to identify how heritage planning has contributed to sustainability goals. The
review combined with an overview of applicable policy and a related case study will compose the
basis of the paper.
This research is significant due to the differing approaches of theory and practice. Theoretical
approaches often through

Cultural Heritage And Cultural Culture
Cultural heritage is a testimony to reflect the distinctiveness of a place made by human (English
Heritage, 2009; United Nations of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage
Centre [WHC], 2008). According to Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau (n.d.), Macau has a wealth of
cultural heritage which illustrates the interchange between China and the West such as knowledge,
religions, and social trends. Thus, Macau is listed as Historic Centre of Macau in the World Heritage
List since there is a significant number of cultural heritage built in western style as well as local
style in China. (Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau, n.d.). In 2014, tourist arrival amounts to 31,525,632
and total spending of visitors is MOP 61.75 billion (Documentation and Information Centre of
Statistics and Census Service, 2015). As a result, cultural tourism promotes the growth of the
economy as the well as the living environment. Therefore, the essay examines the importance of
place identity in heritage conservation and some benefits of cultural tourism. Then, it reflects some
challenges in the sustainability of heritage management. Finally, it explains how community
engagement contributes the viability of heritage conservation. Heritage conservation illustrates the
place diversity of the place which convinces the community to recognise their place identity.
According to the World Heritage Centre (2008), the preservation of heritage inspires people with
creativity as well as innovation.

Many areas are sought after due to their streetscape, environmental landscape and location to
transport facilities. Our heritage gives us a sense of living history and provides a physical link to the
work and way of life of earlier generations. It enriches our lives and helps us to understand who we
are today.

1. What is Heritage Significance?
The concept of heritage significance is based upon an idea that a place or an artefact may be
historic, scientific, aesthetic or social value for the past, present and future generations. The state of
New South Wales has two main types of heritage listings known as conservation areas and heritage
items. An item listed as heritage identifies that a place or object has some heritage significance.
There are four main permitted lists for heritage listings, for places that are local such as a council
district, state–wide, Australia–wide and internationally. Local items of heritage significance are
listed on Local Environment Plans, at the local council. The State Heritage Register lists our State's
most significant heritage places. The Nationale Heritage List contains details of Australia–wide
heritage items or places. The World Heritage List contains items of world wide significance. There
is currently 936 properties listed as outstanding universal value. Heritage places gathered from all
lists combined demonstrate and illustrate the unique history of NSW and Australia. As physical

Cultural Heritage Of The French Tourism
Tourism in France is an important activity, both for the French who choose to spend their holidays,
and foreigners who come to stay. Thus, since 1990, France became the first tourist destination in the
world. The tourist attraction of France is due to the large number and wide variety of points of
interest, diversity of landscapes, the rich cultural and artistic heritage, the temperate climate and
ease of access and transport infrastructure, but also the important equipment in the country and
varied reception facilities (hotels, amusement parks...). Thus, each department is a French tourist
department with several points of interest. France has a rich well known cultural heritage, favored
by many sites listed as World Heritage of UNESCO. The French tourism has many different facets
and positive economic impacts and France makes every effort to maintain the liveliness of this
important asset. The history of tourism in France began around 1760 in the south of France in
Hyeres, becoming a common winter resort renowned among UK thanks to its relatively mild
Mediterranean climate. In 1910 Alexandre Millerand, the French Minister of Public Works at the
time, created the first tourism office, with the desire to promote those places that must be
contemplated and visited by many. The intellectual vision that covers his entourage will then change
since we will be more aware of our surroundings. We decide consciously to build tourism in these
places. However, the trip is

Unesco And The World Heritage List
UNESCO and the World Heritage List
After the devastation created by World War I, and II, UNESCO (United Nations Educational,
Scientific, and Cultural Organization) was founded in 1945. This organization was created as a way
to establish peace, based on humanity's intellectual and moral solidarity. Then in 1972, UNESCO
founded the World Heritage Convention as a way to protect sites of exceptional worldwide
importance (UNESCO, 2012). This convention was later ratified by 191 countries, making it almost
globally accepted. The World Heritage List is made up of outstanding places that are to be
safeguarded for future generations. These places include the Pyramids of Egypt, the Galápagos
Islands in Ecuador, as well as the Acropolis in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nomination can then be submitted to the World Heritage Centre for review. Once complete the
file can then be sent to the appropriate Advisory Bodies for evaluation. Two Advisory Bodies, both
of which evaluate a site being nominated, include the International Council on Monuments and Sites
(ICOMOS) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). These committees provide evaluations on a
site. There is a third Advisory Body known as the International Centre for the Study of the
Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), which provides expert advice as to
the conservation of cultural sites, along with training activities. The World Heritage Committee will
then make a final decision on whether a site will receive an inscription. This committee meets once
a year to decide upon nominations, and can defer a request. When a site is deferred, it is usually
because more information is needed from the state party nominating the location. Standards for
selection must include outstanding universal value, and meet a minimum of one of the ten selection
criteria (World Heritage Center, 2013:30–31).
As stated on UNESCO's (2012) website, there are 10 criteria for the nomination of World Heritage
Sites (Cultural criteria are listed in section I–VI and Natural criteria are placed in VII–X):
(I) represent a masterpiece of human creative genius; (II) exhibit an important interchange of human

The Importance Of Cultural Heritage
In an era of globalization governed by financial targets and money return, cultural heritage being an
important humanity asset becomes victim of oppressive and destroying actions meant to institute
economic and social progress. Cultural destructiveness and ignorance are observed in Banksy's
graffiti of a worker jet blasting over prehistoric art from a city wall. As progress along with mass
and cyber media tend to gain territory and people's sympathy, we must be responsible to safeguard
the cultural legacy which is the basis of humanity. Marcus Garvey said, "A people without the
knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots." (Brainy Quote).
Being unique and irreplaceable, cultural heritage keeps us attached to our religion, customs and
ancestors and charges us to preserve it for the future generations. However, culture loss or
deculturation becomes a living threat caused by rapid modernization. Culture cannot fit itself in a
money–oriented and fast paced world where people have a tendency to become materialistic.
Globalization as a promoter of integration of societies and new opportunities is in fact a culture
killer which causes loss of identity. How can antique or medieval art protect itself or withstand the
contemporary art when our society insists to take the plunge into globalization? Murzacov 2 A vivid
example of modernization taking over the cultural heritage is the city of Manilla, Philippines

Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves was included in the World Heritage list because it had fit into three
of the criteria points for the natural criteria. These include criterion X (10), IX (9), and VII (7).
To begin with, criterion x (10) states that the area has to have important and natural habitats for
conservation of biodiversity and it may contain threatened species with value of science and
conservation. The Air Tenere Natural Reserves successfully demonstrates this, as in its environment,
there are three species of the antelope of the Sahara Desert on IUCN 's Red List of threatened
species, which are the Dorcas Gazelle, Leptocere gazelle and the Addax. About one sixth of the
Reserve is benefited from the statute of sanctuary for the protection of the Addax. Many species
have been identified in the reserve, including 40 species of mammals, 18 species of reptiles, 165
species of birds, and one amphibian species. This shows the vast biodiversity in this area. As for
flora, there are species of, Acacia raddiana, Balanites aegyptiaca and Maerua crassifolia and many
more. In the larger valleys, where water in the alluvial reservoirs is plentiful, there is a specific
habitat that was developed with date palms and doum palms.

Why Should Not Be Placed On The World Heritage
The World Heritage Committee decides whether a site should or should not be placed on the World
Heritage list, designated, or postponed. The decision is based upon guidance from the Advisory
Bodies. The committee then approves a Statement of Outstanding Universal Value for the site. This
statement consists of their resolution that the site has Outstanding Universal Value. The declaration
is also the foundation for any management and fortification the site may need in the future. If the
site is not to be inscribed onto the World Heritage List, the only way redetermination may take place
is under extraordinary situations. These conditions can include new scientific discoveries or
information, otherwise if differing criteria that was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any information that is needed by the Advisory Bodies must be requested by January 31 (year 2).
Evaluations and recommendations from the Advisory Bodies will be received by the Secretariat six
weeks before the World Heritage Committee meets (year 2). The Secretariat then will transfer the
information to the state party, and the World Heritage Committee. Fourteen days before the World
Heritage Committee meets the state party needs to send any errors in the Advisory Bodies
recommendations or evaluations. The World Heritage Committee's annual session takes place in
either June or July (year 2). Immediately following this session, either the site is inscribed, referred,
or deferred (World Heritage Center, 2013:43–45). Just as a site can be inscribed on the World
Heritage List, a site can be removed. The process for deletion from the list can include loss of
attributes that enabled the site onto the list, if these features are threatened, or if measures by the
state party have not happened. The World Heritage Committee will explore all information as to the
deterioration of a site. A vote requires two–thirds of the members to agree to delete a location from
the World Heritage List. The committee then notifies the public, and publication of this modification
will take place (World Heritage Center, 2013:53–54). Germany 's Dresden Elbe Valley and the
Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman have both been removed from the World Heritage List

The Perception Heritage
In "Everyday Use", Alice Walker conveys the story of a mother and her two daughters' conflicting
ideas about their identities and ancestry. Mama is a simple woman that values culture and heritage
for its usefulness but also its personal significance. However, her daughter Dee represents a
materialistic way of life where culture and heritage are to be valued only for their artistic appeal.
Through the use of symbolism and characterization, Walker displays how Mama's perception of her
two daughter changes regarding the importance of heritage. In the beginning, the story introduces
the characterization of Mama and shows how she views her individuality. Mama waits for Dee "in
the yard that Maggie and [her] made so clean and wavy" (Walker 278), which emphasizes the
physical characteristics of the yard; also the use of the word "so," shows the strong attachment that
she and Maggie, her daughter, have to their home. The fact is the yard is "not just a yard. It is like an
extended living room" that expresses the essence of her being (278). Also her description of herself
likewise shows a familiarity and comfort with her own self: she is "a large, big–boned woman with
rough, man–working hands" (278). Thus she knows the reality of her body and accepts it, even
finding comfort in the way that her "fat keeps [her] hot in zero weather" (278). Mama is bound to
her home because it represents who she is. Thus Walker implies that similarly this is how she stands
in relation to her culture

Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is a short story included in her collection In Love and Trouble
published in 1973. The story's setting takes place in the Deep South during the Civil Rights
Movement in the 1960s as many "blacks" were struggling to define their cultural identities (White).
Traditions and culture in "Everyday Use" is portrayed contrastingly between Ms. Johnson and
Maggie, who still follow rural black cultural of the south and Dee who has newly adopted a "native
African" culture. An encounter over the use of quilts simplifies into two different interpretations of
culture. Walker uses symbolism and contrasting characters to portray these interpretations and
implies that culture and heritage are a part of everyday life.

Walker is implying that Mama is comfortable with herself and accepts the reality of her body. Mrs.
Johnson is at home with herself and through this short description Walker implies Mama's
acceptance and comfort in traditional ways and where she stands in relation to culture (Velazquez).
Comparatively, Mrs. Johnson's timid, maladjusted, young daughter, Maggie, is like her mother.
Mama describes Maggie as a "lame animal". After being left with an ugly scare from a childhood
fire, she lives at home under the protection of Mama, untouched by society. Her solitude and lack of
education have left Maggie adversely shy, but Mama is plain–spoken about Maggie's problems.
"Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good naturedly but can't see well. She knows
she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by" (Walker, 521). Maggie
represents purity and innocence and Mama has sympathy for her daughter. Maggie is much like her
mother and traditions of their heritage have been passed down to Maggie through Mama such as
learning how to quilt.
On the other hand, Dee is the opposite of Maggie. She is characterized by attractiveness, desire, and
education. Her education is most important in characterizing Dee and essentially shapes her
opposing values which separate her from her family. Mama comments on Dee's education several
times: "She used to read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, and other folks' habits... She washed

Politics, Place, And The Past : The Challenges Of Heritage
Politics, Place, and the Past: The Challenges of Heritage in South Asia Name: Institution: Politics,
Place, and the Past: The Challenges of Heritage in South Asia 1) What types of challenges to
archaeological resources are discussed by the authors? The archaeological sites that comprise of
relics are managed in a similar way to other important items of environmental heritage. They ought
to be treated in the similar way and with the same level of assessment and consideration like any
other surviving past physical pieces of evidence such as precincts, works, buildings and landscapes.
The archeological resources are faced with a wide array of challenges. According to Coningham and
Gunawardhana (2013) the major challenges facing the archaeological resources include looting and
a high level of destruction. The damages are mainly as a result of the expansion of fields for
agricultural purposes and the quarrying the ancient pillars and stone slabs for the purpose of
providing building material. The reasons as to why the majority of stupas and image houses have
been targeted have been due to their Buddhists relics. Looting of the relics has become a major
problem (Coningham and Gunawardhana, 2013). Lacking the necessary manpower and money,
looters have managed to dig up Buddhists artifacts and the black market trades of the antiquities
have posed major problems in the efforts of nations that want to preserve their national heritage and
archeological resources.

Heritage And Heritage Of Heritage
The one thing that sets an individual from other individuals is the uniqueness of one's heritage.
Heritage is the essential part of a person 's life, it is the very foundation that an individual future is
built from. Heritage can be based on a family values, tradition and environment. Traditions, and
cultural legacies come from grandparents or older relatives, they contribute to our family values. We
all take the parts of the past that means the most to us, and combine it with the new traditions. In
this paper, I will discuss what heritage is, the importance of how heritage identifies an individual, or
can it inhibit an individual's self–identity, and finally look at some family tradition that makes up
one's heritage.
What is heritage?
First, heritage is a critical piece that represents who you are; it is the history of an individual.
Heritage is something that you are born with or have inherited. This can be the color of your skin, an
accent in the language that you speak, or the passing down of a unique item. For example, the short
story "Everyday Use", by Alice Walker, the narrator of the story Mama passes down two quilt to one
of her daughter's, Maggie. The quilt had been hand made with all kinds of material, one particular
material was from Maggie's Grandpa Ezra. Grandpa Ezra's materials had come from his uniform
that he had worn, while in the Civil War. Other material for the quilt had come from a dress that her
Grandma Dee had worn, as well as other member of

Our Secrets Essay
Identification by definition is the state of being identified, which means the characteristics and
feature that set you aside from everyone else. Question is: What makes an identity? Is it the heritage
of our parents? The people we interact with? Or how about the decisions we make on a daily basis?
Each of these are components to our identities in different manners though they each have different
levels of impact upon us. Depending on the person, everyone has different opinions as to how
important their identity is. Some may say that their past identity is not of importance to them
because they relate to who they have become throughout time and others tend to place importance
of where they come from. In his book, In the Name of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Example Of Heritage Management Plan
Heritage management plan Introduction: heritage management plans or HMP are a way of
sustaining heritage sites for future and current generations. Heritage has a mixture of aspects and
varying definitions. One the oxford dictionary definitions are as follows "valued objects and
qualities such as historic buildings and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous
generations" so heritage is more than just the physical site it includes the people (oxford
dictionaries). A good HMP more than just protects a site it encourages community involvement and
interest and serves a community's interests. A good HMP also needs to be economically sustainable

The Sustainable Measures Of Middle Eastern Heritage Buildings
The sustainable measures of Middle Eastern heritage buildings are limited, as well the international
green rating system versions are still unsuitable and unable to adapt the local conditions and
customs. Despite the Arab efforts to have their own rating systems, such as Abu Dhabi, Qatar and
Kuwait (Komurlu, Ruveyda, Asli Pelin Gurgun, and David Arditi 2015, Omar Attallah, Sherif,
Ahmad Senouci, Amr Kandil, and Hassan Al–Derham 2013), sustainability in most Middle Eastern
countries is still deficient and facing many challenges presented by the lack of the cooperation and
supports of the local Arabic organizations, and the dearth of metrics, gap of research, measurement
field, monitoring systems, and environmental management and regulations (Komurlu, Ruveyda,
David Arditi, and Asli Pelin Gurgun 2014). Despite Syrian government 's concern for the
environment and sustainability, the situation of environmental research field is still weak (Haydar

environmental conditions within the updating of building codes for the cities, trying to raise
awareness and training national cadres. The only Syrian thermal insulation code, was published by

The Use Of Irony In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
In the story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker deals with a young woman who is trying to find her place
in her own heritage. "Everyday Use," is narrated by the mother or Mama, an African–American
woman living in the deep South of Rural Georgia with one of her two daughters. The family is
living in very poor conditions, they do not have fancy things, and the mother does all the work
herself. The story begins with Mama and Maggie awaiting on Dee, a college student, to arrive at
home from college. When Dee went off to college she thought that her heritage was old and out of
style, but when she came back home for a visit she insists on taking many things from home. Dee
also changed her name to Wangero, so she would not have the same name as someone else in her
family. She wants these different artifacts of her heritage because she wants to show them off for
fashion and use them for decorations. Dee points out the things that she thinks will stand out the
most, such as the quilt, dashers, and the benches. Mama or Mrs. Johnson, does not allow Dee to take
anything but the dashers. She knows that Dee will not respect the things that their ancestors made.
Mama and Maggie respect their heritage very much and does not want anyone to use the artifacts in
the wrong way. In the short story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker applies the literary technique of
irony to emphasize heritage as part of one daily life. The Johnson family has many problems
throughout the household. Mrs. Johnson has a harsh and difficult life; however, her daughters does
not make it any better. Mama does not have a lot to show for, but what she does have she
appreciates and cares for it very much. The biggest problem would be that Dee does not respect her
heritage and does not want to live at home. Their home was not that nice, there were many things
wrong with it, but that is where it shows your culture and heritage of your past. Dee left home
because she did not like the way her mama was living, she went off to college to try to better
herself. Maggie, the youngest daughter, is a very dull and unattractive girl. Walker writes,

Alice Walker's Themes In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Alice Walkers short story, "Everyday Use," is a story that focuses on ones heritage, dignity and to
figure out the person that one really is. The story is narrated by Mama, who is Dee and Maggies
mother. The setting of the story mostly takes in place in the yard of the house between the 1960s and
1970s. Upon reading the story, the reader is given a clear description of what the yard is like. Mama
tells us, "A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is like
an extended living room. When the hard clay is swept clean as a floor and the fine sand around the

At one point Dee started pointing out things that she was going to take back with her to decorate her
house with. One of the items was a butter churn that had been passed along many generations and
had imprints of the people who had used it. Mama said, "You didn't even have to look close to see
where hands pushing the dasher up and down to make butter had left a kind of sink in the wood. In
fact, there were a lot of small sinks; you could see where thumbs and fingers had sunk into the
wood." Dee wasn't aware of how long this churn had been the family which shows how much she
wanted to run away from her heritage. One of the most important symbols used in "Everyday Use"
was the quilts, which to Dee had no significant value before she had gone off to college; however,
towards the end of the story Dee requested to have the quilts after leaving them behind when going
off to college, saying that she was the only one who could "appreciate" them. Maggie being as kind–
hearted and shy as she was said that Dee could have the quilts, Mama refused saying that she had
already promised Maggie the quilts. The quilts symbolize the family heritage and what the family
went through during slavery. Mama says, "In both of [the quilts] were scraps of dresses Grandma

The Cultural Heritage Of Albania
Consequently, in 1991 at the World Heritage Committee's Fifteenth Session, they ruled on the
Durrës Amphitheatre and stated, "While recognizing the importance of this property as part of the
cultural heritage of Albania...it did not meet the criteria for inscription on the World Heritage List as
defined for the purposes of the application of the Convention" (Convention Concerning the
Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Fifteenth Session, 1991:30). As of 1996, the
amphitheater was placed "under consideration" by UNESCO. Currently Albania has four sites

The need for restoration and rehabilitation of the amphitheater are the consequence of having been
lost for over 500 years. Chaotic urban planning took place as the modern city of Durrës grew;
unfortunately, most of its development took place right on top of the arena. Ultimately, the city's
organization has affected the structural integrity and deterioration of the auditorium, since
excavation (Figure 5; Molla, 2014:32). Further damage has taken place due to looting, which has
added to the wear and tear to the building's overall integrity (Karaiskaj, 2004:13). The amphitheater,
along with the Byzantine mosaics and frescos are in dwindling condition (Jacques, 1995:154). Part
of the poor form of the arena, can be traced to an ongoing presence of water. Even though at one
point, there was a bilge water pump installed from 2005–2008, it seems to have not been used
during this period. Many of the frescos and mosaics in the Byzantine chapel also have been badly
damaged from these conditions. Rainwater seeps through both the polycarbonate covers and a
ventilation chamber, causing more moisture to encounter the artwork, instead of protecting them
(Ponce de Leon, 2013:9).

Enrolling to Heritage University I wasn't sure what to expect. While obtaining my Associate of Arts
degree at Yakima Valley Community College my ultimate goal was to become a social worker.
Although, towards the last quarter at YVCC I realized that I was not passionate enough to continue

graduating with a Bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration on Entrepreneur.
During my junior year I realized I wanted to concentrate in marketing but was not completely sure,

Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan
"A Pair of Tickets" is a short essay in which Amy Tan, the author, portrays how a photograph can be
used as a time capsule. June May, Tan's main character, experiences the new view of herself rather
than the blindness she had to her culture before her mother's death. Before her mother, Suyuan, dies
she predicted that one day, something would trigger the connection to her heritage little did she
know it would come with devastating news. Through her worldly travels to China to find her long–
lost sisters and tell them about their mothers passing she also finds the heritage and piece of identity
that has been absent from her life. The plot structure and pacing create the stories main theme:
people are often unable or unwilling to see themselves as they really.
Although this short essay is based on a true incident in Tan's life it does contain pieces of fairytales
and modernism. The story is revealed by Tan through first person narrative. The narrator, June May,
is speaking about the events that she is experiencing. It begins with the memory of when she was in
high school and how she was explaining to her mother that she did not feel Chinese (paragraphs 1–
4). The narrator only knows of the situations she has been told about and experienced. Tan explains
exactly how the reader is feeling along with giving the reader hints through June Mays's actions and
words.
During her thirty–six years of life June May has felt lost in her identity. When she learns of her
mother's death, she realized "I've never really known what it means to be Chinese" (paragraph 5).
Now there was no longer anyone who believed "Someday you will see... it's in your blood, waiting
to be let go" (paragraph 4). June May acknowledges the transformation she will go through during
her journey to China. This suggests that the reader is open to change; she believes that this is her
way to honor her mother by reuniting her with her twin daughters. June May wants to tell them
about their mother's death but she then realizes that the scene she has dreamed of so many times is
not going to go as she once wanted (paragraph 18). Then, in a surprising twist, everything she
thought she knew about the meeting would be revealed to her as wrong. The meeting was a long

Cultural heritage in Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
The pearl of the Indian Ocean Sri Lanka, reflects a long history of its nations. From the

Both movable and immovable property referred in 1940 Ceylon Antiquities convention, shows

the 1954 UNESCO convention uses the similar term as a "cultural property". However, 1940

4 What vision of cultural heritage is your country recommending to its citizens. The vision
imbedded on Sri Lankans (citizens in Ceylon) through this definition was that the British authority
had the autonomy about the antiquities or heritage in Sri Lanka and its materialistic perspective of
Sri Lanka heritage. One of the evidence for this vision is the Ordinance's hand over of the
ownership to the Britain by naming antiquities as an absolute property of the crown. Furthermore,
by using the term "property" to the antiquity, it apparently states the ownership and the connection
with the market value. Therefore, this definition promotes the materialistic value on heritage base on

survival of heritage buildings in Malaysia has been extremely under threat for quite some time now.
A large number of heritage buildings are decaying due to age, neglect, and high maintenance cost
while many have been destroyed during the building boom of the 1970s. Moreover, large scale
urban development continues to jeopardize their existence. Mustapa et al (2007) noted that
destroying heritage buildings is as good as wiping out historical memories. He affirmed that
conserving these buildings became necessary in order to avert an ugly scenario of losing the nations'
historical and architectural memories. As defined by Ahmad (2009), "building conservation relates
to the processes of maintenance, repair, and restoration of heritage buildings with the aim of
prolonging a building's life and function". In other words, building conservation is the action taken
to prevent decay by adopting approaches that extend the life of heritage building. For the purpose of

Symbolism and Theme in Everyday Use
The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker differentiates between a fake and a real heritage. To
illustrate her point she uses one family consisting of a mother and her two daughters and the way
each of them views their ancestry and heritage. Through the behavior of these three people Walker
is able to clearly show the little things that separate a real heritage from the assumed fake mask.
During the time of many positive changes to the lives of black people across the America, the author
illustrates what the true African American heritage should look like, compared to empty claims by
those who have no understanding it.
The first and perhaps the least complex of the symbols in the story is Mama's yard. In the very

At the same time, judging from the way that Dee acts throughout her visit, such bonds to one's
heritage can be easily broken or even completely destroyed. And when these bonds are finally
destroyed it becomes impossible for people like Dee to understand the meaning of such little objects
like the quilts in much the same way as it is impossible for her to even understand the origins and
the legacy of her name. Again the history behind the quilts is really important so Mama describes
more of it: "Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell's paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece,
about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform that he wore in the
Civil War" (495). Made out of many small pieces of Maggie's and Dee's ancestors' clothes, these
quilts visually display the history of their family, including all of the struggles such as war, racism
and poverty experienced by its members over last century. What makes these quilts even more
valuable and important is the fact that because of her poverty Mama considers her heritage,
contained in the things like these quilts, as the most important material object in her possession.
Therefore she decides that the best way to honor this heritage would be to pass them to Maggie to
be used like they were intended to by those who made the quilts and the legacy contained inside of
them. The quilts then summarize the great and long heritage, passed on

Heritage, a Theme in Alice Walker´s "Everyday Use
Alice Walker sets "Everyday Use" as a story of a mother and two daughters where the older
daughter, Dee, is coming home to visit them after being away for a while. Walker sets the tone of
the story by displaying how poor and uneducated the family is and how Dee while growing up was
always looking for better things never appreciating the aspects of her life. As the story develops, the
focus of the story is on a set of quilts made by the mother from pieces of clothing that belonged to
her grandparents and the personal battle of who should really keep them in order to appreciate the
heritage behind them. In "Everyday Use" a person can see how Maggie and Dee differ on the fact
that heritage is a characteristic of pride that a person displays every day of their life versus a fad for
a specific period of someone's life.
While growing up Dee was always resentful of the lifestyle that she had as it did not measure to the
better things she was always dreaming of. While the mother recounts the story of when their original
house burned to the ground, she mentions how Dee stood there concentrating at the way the house
slowly disappeared in the fire since "she hated the house that much" (Walker 298). This aspect sets
the tone of how Dee was never willing to embody the characteristics of her life growing up, and it
can be seen how she was ashamed of where she came from as later she writes her mother in a letter
of how she will always try to visit them, but "she will never bring her

Student Leadership Reflection
Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no clue what they
were. I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain people work well in a group together
or why they don't. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped
me to figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project,
The Student Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave
me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership
skills and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself.
Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced
before. I wasn't hesitant about starting college but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I
didn't know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different from
what I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, "To
connect you to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and success
in the first year". I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now know
about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan's peer mentor
moments, whether she was talking about the Center for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan's peer
mentor moments helped me locate the different resource around campus and even understand what
they were about. Even though I haven't been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our
class find them and know what those resources are about. This has helped me grow as a student
because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question
there are people that can provide me with information.
The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In
the beginning I didn't know about strengths. Now that I do, I see why they are important when
beginning a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I'm going to
accomplish my goals. I use my strategic strength to plan out

What it Takes for a Site to be Inscribe on the UNESCO...
The process required for a site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List is long and
complicated. It has four main steps, each of which are a process in themselves: placement on a
tentative list, submission of a nomination file, evaluation by an Advisory Body, and a final decision
by the World Heritage Committee. The entire process usually takes about a year and a half, but can
vary depending of the time taken for each step (World Heritage Ireland, 2010). In order to submit
sites to the World Heritage List, a country must first sign the World Heritage Convention, thereby
committing to protecting their natural and culture heritage. After that, the State Party, in Ireland's

criteria. The definitions of 'authenticity' and 'integrity' that UNESCO uses are in the Nara Document
on Authenticity (World Heritage Ireland, 2010). The State Party can demonstrate the authenticity
and integrity by listing and defending any and all works completed on the site, whether for
conservation, restoration, or adaptation (World Heritage Ireland, 2010). This history of works is
important, because if a site has been reconstructed so many times that barely an of the original
survives, the site may no longer have authenticity. The history of the site itself and the surrounding
culture is also important, because it helps to demonstrate the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of
the site, as well as how it might fit the criteria as a unique or exceptional example of cultural
traditions, civilizations living or dead, or any of the other ten criteria. The nomination file also has
to contain a management plan to insure the OUV, authenticity, and integrity of the site are
maintained for future generations. The management plan can be one of the most difficult aspects of
the nomination file, because it requires so much cooperation between all of the owners of the site,

An Analysis Of Alice Walker And Kate Chopin
Heritage, a lot of people see it as being only the past, with no significance to their everyday lives
whatsoever, others see it as merely objects and money passed down from older generations to their
younger generations, but really heritage means much more than that. Ones heritage is the lessons
learned from elders and passed down to their children and grandchildren to help them not make the
same mistakes they made before, heritage is the roots that makes a person who they are. The world
without recollection of its's heritage, is a world without progress, a world that only stands still
waiting for the same missteps to cycle back around. A person with no knowledge of their heritage is
a person with no knowledge of themselves, and not knowing one 's self can lead to mishaps
directing that individual down a path they would otherwise be able to avoid with a keen
understanding of where they originate. Alice Walker and Kate Chopin both touch on the struggles
and outcomes of not knowing or taking advantage of one 's heritage through their stories "Everyday
Use" and "Desiree's baby." In both of the stories, the antagonist Dee/Wangero, and Armand has
problems with whom they truly are because of their lack of knowledge and acceptance of who they
truly are. The misfortune of not appreciating one 's heritage is clearly identified in Alice Walker 's
"Everyday Use." The character used to demonstrate the tragedies that follows one who doesn't

Interpretations Of Heritage In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
"Guided By My Heritage" ("In Search" 243) – Interpretations of Heritage In "Everyday Use," Alice
Walker uses relics from Dee's past to demonstrate the importance of heritage through the
understanding of inheritance and ancestry. Heritage in this story is understood as recognizing from
where a person has originated. Walker correspondingly compares inheritance to art, something
which should be used daily and passed on to future generations. Heritage and inheritance both have
the same French root word: heriter– meaning inherit, implying that for one to truly realize and grasp
their heritage they must first accept what they have inherited, in this case the quilts, and utilize
them. In the story, being aware of one's heritage is a significant conflict that troubles the characters.
At the end, Mama and Maggie are the ones that carry on their tradition in the present and truly
understand the true meaning of heritage. Throughout the story exists an overlying theme of
comprehension of one's heritage and ancestry. In contract to this theme, Dee is viewed as
hypocritical when claiming she is reconnecting to her African roots, her supposed heritage, because
numerous times she contradicts her beliefs and principles she is to uphold. If she is truly connected
to her African roots, then she would essentially adopt all parts of the culture and religion.
Considering that she has married Hakim–a–barber, who declares the Islamic greeting

This chapter is broken down into three main parts, culture and heritage, the law and war, and the
international community and its legal instruments. The first part addresses the historical perspective
of the ideas about culture by acknowledging the development of the term; starting from Edward
Burnett Tylor's definition of culture from the 19th century to the ideas suggested by Clifford Geertz
concerning culture.1 These ideas are further explored through contemporary scholarship on the
associations of culture and heritage, and how cultural heritage relates to the identities of human
beings and thus becomes a target in conflict situations. The second part of the first chapter, on the
law and war, outlines the development of International Humanitarian Law throughout history in
order to communicate how the law is reactive and consequently created. The distinct difference in
treatment of cultural objects throughout the history of war has demonstrated the value and ideas
surrounding their importance and safeguarding. The last part of Chapter 1 is a legal analysis of
primary sources of law, chiefly dealing with the Geneva Law and Hague Law, on the protection of
cultural heritage and their practical application during armed conflict. Chapter two presents two

Everyday Use Heritage
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, there is a clear depiction of heritage and what it is; equally,
there is also the image of how it may be construed. In the story, the reader is introduced into the life
of an African American family who live in a small house and struggle financially. It is a life that has
been lived by many throughout in history. Through the use of symbolism, Walker interprets the
'American Dream' as unique to each individual and the possibility to lose it in the chaos of life.
Immediately, the reader is introduced to a family who doesn't live at the top of the socioeconomic

rooted from the Declaration of Independence, which states that, "All men are created equal" with the

siblings of the same family have completely opposite outcomes in life. As Dee chooses to live a
different life of that which she was brought into, and Maggie's choosing the path of inheritance,
culture, and tradition. In the eyes of the world, it would seem that Dee is living the "American
Dream"; however, in the eyes of her family, Maggie is the one living the dream. She is true to their

law and cultural heritage protection during armed conflict is that it involves a variety of disciplines:
anthropology, archeology, architecture, conservation, law, international affairs, politics and
philosophy among others. Therefore when addressing the issue, all disciplines, as well as the many
stakeholders involved, must be considered and challenged. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on a
legal analysis of cultural heritage protection during armed conflict to establish the importance that
cultural heritage has on humanity at large and to emphasize the role of the international community
in its safeguarding. The conceptual basis of this thesis is cultural heritage, therefore a critical
analysis of the ideology associated with the terms, culture and heritage, is fundamental to
understanding their development throughout time and within international legal instruments. The

The Arab Civil War And The Destruction Of Ancient Objects...
Since the early twenty–first century and even before, museums in the Middle East have had to learn
to cope with conflict. Syria is the best example of a country with many cultural heritage sites and
museums that are in danger due to conflict. The onset of the Syrian Civil War and the destruction of
ancient objects and cultural heritage sites by ISIS have been the most recent manifestation of this.
As a result of the Syrian Civil War and ISIS takeover, sites like Palmyra and the Aleppo historic city
center have been heavily damaged ("The Race to Save Syria 's Archaeological Treasures." 2016).
Palmyra has stood for thousands of years, as prominent commercial site in ancient times and as a
symbol Syrian cultural identity in recent times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ISIS's motivations revolve around looting and smuggling of ancient artifacts for funding (al–Frieh
2016), religious cleansing for the 'restoration of true Islam,' a chance to make news headlines
worldwide to spread fear and intimidation of local populations (Swicord 2016). The dangers of war
have driven away many people who could protect these cultural heritage sites and the objects within
them, and now they are helpless in the face of destruction in conflict and being smuggled for profit.
Palmyra was a victim of this when ISIS captured the city in May of 2015 and controlled it for about
one year. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with remains nearly 2000 years old ("ISIL
captures strategic Syrian city of Palmyra." 2015). During its occupation, the city faced several kinds
of destruction at the hands of its captors. The city had already been damaged from the fighting and
shelling that resulted in its capture. The city's Temple of Ba'al was severely damaged by mortar fire.
ISIS also carried out many deliberate acts of violence against the objects and architecture. In the
months following their victory, ISIS militants destroyed the Temple of Ba'al's primary building and
other structures, like the nearby Temple of Baalshamin and the decorative arches built by the
Romans in the second century CE. They destroyed and defaced these larger like architecture and
sculptures with explosives and jackhammers ("The Race to Save Syria 's

Essay on Walker's Message of Personal Heritage in...
Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is a short story about a mother and two very different daughters set
in rural Georgia during the late 1960's. The plot is centered around on the two daughters, Dee and
Maggie, and focusing on the differences between the two and who will gain possession of two
hand–made quilts that are seen as a coveted trophy by Dee and are viewed as everyday items
Maggie. The final decision of which daughter ultimately receives the quilts will be made by
Momma Johnson. Momma, who is never given a first name in the story, is a strong black woman
with many man–like qualities. "In real life I am a large, big–boned woman with rough, man–
working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and overalls during the ... Show more

I will be focusing this paper on the reasons why Maggie should be given the quilts, reasons why
Dee should not be allowed to take them, and what this tell us about Alice Walker's sense of what it
means to be in touch with one's heritage. Maggie deserves the quilts because she appreciates the
practical value of the items and would naturally use them as they were intended. Like her
grandmother, Maggie is a person who values the quilts more as a practical solution for staying warm
at night than as folk art which should be displayed in a museum. Dee's thoughts of her simple–
minded sister come into full light during a conversation with Momma when her request for the
quilts is denied. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts! She'd probably be backward enough to put
them the everyday use. I reckon she would," Momma replied, "God knows I been saving 'em long
enough with nobody using 'em. I hope she will." (DiYanni 748) With little or no money during
tough times, poorer families have often had to be more self–reliant where learning to sew was a skill
that was valued and passed down to the younger generation. Maggie embraced this skill while her
more ambitious sister did not see the value in learning such an ordinary task. "She can always make

The Implementation Gap Between Theory And Practice Of Heritage Planning And Sustainability Goals

  • 1. The Implementation Gap Between Theory And Practice Of... Overview of Topic: Sustainability is somewhat of a contentious issue within heritage planning. It is widely used, but not always well understood. This essay proposal uses this term to mean balancing the needs of current society with the preservation of current resources to improve cultural vitality, social equality, environmental responsibility and economic vitality (Letourneau, 2016). Each of these pillars contains several aspects, such as innovation and ecological balance, which contribute to the overall success of a community. Heritage must be protected in a holistic and multidisciplinary way, which engages the community and transfers to policy, practice and implementation. Research Question: How has the implementation gap between theory and practice of heritage planning contribute to the goal of sustainability? Overview of Research Design: The research will follow the structure of four organisational sections: a review of relevant literature, an overview of applicable government policies, a case study and an analysis of theoretical and historical approaches. Theory and historical approaches will be explored through a review of relevant literature to identify how heritage planning has contributed to sustainability goals. The review combined with an overview of applicable policy and a related case study will compose the basis of the paper. This research is significant due to the differing approaches of theory and practice. Theoretical approaches often through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Cultural Heritage And Cultural Culture Cultural heritage is a testimony to reflect the distinctiveness of a place made by human (English Heritage, 2009; United Nations of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Centre [WHC], 2008). According to Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau (n.d.), Macau has a wealth of cultural heritage which illustrates the interchange between China and the West such as knowledge, religions, and social trends. Thus, Macau is listed as Historic Centre of Macau in the World Heritage List since there is a significant number of cultural heritage built in western style as well as local style in China. (Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau, n.d.). In 2014, tourist arrival amounts to 31,525,632 and total spending of visitors is MOP 61.75 billion (Documentation and Information Centre of Statistics and Census Service, 2015). As a result, cultural tourism promotes the growth of the economy as the well as the living environment. Therefore, the essay examines the importance of place identity in heritage conservation and some benefits of cultural tourism. Then, it reflects some challenges in the sustainability of heritage management. Finally, it explains how community engagement contributes the viability of heritage conservation. Heritage conservation illustrates the place diversity of the place which convinces the community to recognise their place identity. According to the World Heritage Centre (2008), the preservation of heritage inspires people with creativity as well as innovation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus, since 1990, France became the first tourist destination in the world. The tourist attraction of France is due to the large number and wide variety of points of interest, diversity of landscapes, the rich cultural and artistic heritage, the temperate climate and ease of access and transport infrastructure, but also the important equipment in the country and varied reception facilities (hotels, amusement parks...). Thus, each department is a French tourist department with several points of interest. France has a rich well known cultural heritage, favored by many sites listed as World Heritage of UNESCO. The French tourism has many different facets and positive economic impacts and France makes every effort to maintain the liveliness of this important asset. The history of tourism in France began around 1760 in the south of France in Hyeres, becoming a common winter resort renowned among UK thanks to its relatively mild Mediterranean climate. In 1910 Alexandre Millerand, the French Minister of Public Works at the time, created the first tourism office, with the desire to promote those places that must be contemplated and visited by many. The intellectual vision that covers his entourage will then change since we will be more aware of our surroundings. We decide consciously to build tourism in these places. However, the trip is ... • 7. The Importance Of Cultural Heritage In an era of globalization governed by financial targets and money return, cultural heritage being an important humanity asset becomes victim of oppressive and destroying actions meant to institute economic and social progress. Cultural destructiveness and ignorance are observed in Banksy's graffiti of a worker jet blasting over prehistoric art from a city wall. As progress along with mass and cyber media tend to gain territory and people's sympathy, we must be responsible to safeguard the cultural legacy which is the basis of humanity. Marcus Garvey said, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots." (Brainy Quote). Being unique and irreplaceable, cultural heritage keeps us attached to our religion, customs and ancestors and charges us to preserve it for the future generations. However, culture loss or deculturation becomes a living threat caused by rapid modernization. Culture cannot fit itself in a money–oriented and fast paced world where people have a tendency to become materialistic. Globalization as a promoter of integration of societies and new opportunities is in fact a culture killer which causes loss of identity. How can antique or medieval art protect itself or withstand the contemporary art when our society insists to take the plunge into globalization? • 11. The Perception Heritage In "Everyday Use", Alice Walker conveys the story of a mother and her two daughters' conflicting ideas about their identities and ancestry. Mama is a simple woman that values culture and heritage for its usefulness but also its personal significance. However, her daughter Dee represents a materialistic way of life where culture and heritage are to be valued only for their artistic appeal. Through the use of symbolism and characterization, Walker displays how Mama's perception of her two daughter changes regarding the importance of heritage. In the beginning, the story introduces the characterization of Mama and shows how she views her individuality. Mama waits for Dee "in the yard that Maggie and [her] made so clean and wavy" (Walker 278), which emphasizes the physical characteristics of the yard; also the use of the word "so," shows the strong attachment that she and Maggie, her daughter, have to their home. The fact is the yard is "not just a yard. It is like an extended living room" that expresses the essence of her being (278). Also her description of herself likewise shows a familiarity and comfort with her own self: she is "a large, big–boned woman with rough, man–working hands" (278). Thus she knows the reality of her body and accepts it, even finding comfort in the way that her "fat keeps [her] hot in zero weather" (278). Mama is bound to her home because it represents who she is. Thus Walker implies that similarly this is how she stands in relation to her culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story's setting takes place in the Deep South during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s as many "blacks" were struggling to define their cultural identities (White). Traditions and culture in "Everyday Use" is portrayed contrastingly between Ms. Johnson and Maggie, who still follow rural black cultural of the south and Dee who has newly adopted a "native African" culture. After being left with an ugly scare from a childhood fire, she lives at home under the protection of Mama, untouched by society. Her solitude and lack of education have left Maggie adversely shy, but Mama is plain–spoken about Maggie's problems. "Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good naturedly but can't see well. She knows she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by" (Walker, 521). Maggie represents purity and innocence and Mama has sympathy for her daughter. Maggie is much like her mother and traditions of their heritage have been passed down to Maggie through Mama such as learning how to quilt. On the other hand, Dee is the opposite of Maggie. She is characterized by attractiveness, desire, and education. Her education is most important in characterizing Dee and essentially shapes her opposing values which separate her from her family. The archaeological sites that comprise of relics are managed in a similar way to other important items of environmental heritage. They ought to be treated in the similar way and with the same level of assessment and consideration like any other surviving past physical pieces of evidence such as precincts, works, buildings and landscapes. The archeological resources are faced with a wide array of challenges. According to Coningham and Gunawardhana (2013) the major challenges facing the archaeological resources include looting and a high level of destruction. The damages are mainly as a result of the expansion of fields for agricultural purposes and the quarrying the ancient pillars and stone slabs for the purpose of providing building material. The reasons as to why the majority of stupas and image houses have been targeted have been due to their Buddhists relics. Looting of the relics has become a major problem (Coningham and Gunawardhana, 2013). • 19. The Use Of Irony In Everyday Use By Alice Walker In the story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker deals with a young woman who is trying to find her place in her own heritage. "Everyday Use," is narrated by the mother or Mama, an African–American woman living in the deep South of Rural Georgia with one of her two daughters. The family is living in very poor conditions, they do not have fancy things, and the mother does all the work herself. The story begins with Mama and Maggie awaiting on Dee, a college student, to arrive at home from college. When Dee went off to college she thought that her heritage was old and out of style, but when she came back home for a visit she insists on taking many things from home. Dee also changed her name to Wangero, so she would not have the same name as someone else in her family. She wants these different artifacts of her heritage because she wants to show them off for fashion and use them for decorations. Dee points out the things that she thinks will stand out the most, such as the quilt, dashers, and the benches. Mama or Mrs. Johnson, does not allow Dee to take anything but the dashers. She knows that Dee will not respect the things that their ancestors made. Mama and Maggie respect their heritage very much and does not want anyone to use the artifacts in the wrong way. In the short story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker applies the literary technique of irony to emphasize heritage as part of one daily life. The Johnson family has many problems throughout the household. Mrs. Johnson has a harsh and difficult life; however, her daughters does not make it any better. Mama does not have a lot to show for, but what she does have she appreciates and cares for it very much. The biggest problem would be that Dee does not respect her heritage and does not want to live at home. Their home was not that nice, there were many things wrong with it, but that is where it shows your culture and heritage of your past. Dee left home because she did not like the way her mama was living, she went off to college to try to better herself. Maggie, the youngest daughter, is a very dull and unattractive girl. In fact, there were a lot of small sinks; you could see where thumbs and fingers had sunk into the wood." Dee wasn't aware of how long this churn had been the family which shows how much she wanted to run away from her heritage. One of the most important symbols used in "Everyday Use" was the quilts, which to Dee had no significant value before she had gone off to college; however, towards the end of the story Dee requested to have the quilts after leaving them behind when going off to college, saying that she was the only one who could "appreciate" them. The amphitheater, along with the Byzantine mosaics and frescos are in dwindling condition (Jacques, 1995:154). Part of the poor form of the arena, can be traced to an ongoing presence of water. • 25. Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan "A Pair of Tickets" is a short essay in which Amy Tan, the author, portrays how a photograph can be used as a time capsule. June May, Tan's main character, experiences the new view of herself rather than the blindness she had to her culture before her mother's death. Before her mother, Suyuan, dies she predicted that one day, something would trigger the connection to her heritage little did she know it would come with devastating news. Through her worldly travels to China to find her long– lost sisters and tell them about their mothers passing she also finds the heritage and piece of identity that has been absent from her life. The plot structure and pacing create the stories main theme: people are often unable or unwilling to see themselves as they really. Although this short essay is based on a true incident in Tan's life it does contain pieces of fairytales and modernism. The story is revealed by Tan through first person narrative. The narrator, June May, is speaking about the events that she is experiencing. It begins with the memory of when she was in high school and how she was explaining to her mother that she did not feel Chinese (paragraphs 1– 4). The narrator only knows of the situations she has been told about and experienced. Tan explains exactly how the reader is feeling along with giving the reader hints through June Mays's actions and words. During her thirty–six years of life June May has felt lost in her identity. When she learns of her mother's death, she realized "I've never really known what it means to be Chinese" (paragraph 5). Now there was no longer anyone who believed "Someday you will see... it's in your blood, waiting to be let go" (paragraph 4). June May acknowledges the transformation she will go through during her journey to China. This suggests that the reader is open to change; she believes that this is her way to honor her mother by reuniting her with her twin daughters. June May wants to tell them about their mother's death but she then realizes that the scene she has dreamed of so many times is not going to go as she once wanted (paragraph 18). Then, in a surprising twist, everything she thought she knew about the meeting would be revealed to her as wrong. The meeting was a long ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The vision imbedded on Sri Lankans (citizens in Ceylon) through this definition was that the British authority had the autonomy about the antiquities or heritage in Sri Lanka and its materialistic perspective of Sri Lanka heritage. One of the evidence for this vision is the Ordinance's hand over of the ownership to the Britain by naming antiquities as an absolute property of the crown. Furthermore, by using the term "property" to the antiquity, it apparently states the ownership and the connection with the market value. Therefore, this definition promotes the materialistic value on heritage base on the British authority needs. Further, by devaluing the belief system of natives by making the ... Heritage buildings as described by Feilden (2000) are "buildings that give us a sense of wonder and make us want to know more about people and culture that produce it". A more elaborate definition was made by Kamal and Harun (2002) where they defined them as buildings built in the past which have high historical and architectural values and require continuous care and protection to preserve their historical, architectural, aesthetic, archaeological, spiritual, social, political and economic values. In other words, heritage buildings are expected to have an indefinite life span, signifying that they should be preserved for as long as possible. The survival of heritage buildings in Malaysia has been extremely under threat for quite some time now. A large number of heritage buildings are decaying due to age, neglect, and high maintenance cost while many have been destroyed during the building boom of the 1970s. Moreover, large scale urban development continues to jeopardize their existence. Mustapa et al (2007) noted that destroying heritage buildings is as good as wiping out historical memories. He affirmed that conserving these buildings became necessary in order to avert an ugly scenario of losing the nations' historical and architectural memories. As defined by Ahmad (2009), "building conservation relates to the processes of maintenance, repair, and restoration of heritage buildings with the aim of prolonging a building's life and function". • 28. Symbolism and Theme in Everyday Use The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker differentiates between a fake and a real heritage. To illustrate her point she uses one family consisting of a mother and her two daughters and the way each of them views their ancestry and heritage. Through the behavior of these three people Walker is able to clearly show the little things that separate a real heritage from the assumed fake mask. During the time of many positive changes to the lives of black people across the America, the author illustrates what the true African American heritage should look like, compared to empty claims by those who have no understanding it. At the same time, judging from the way that Dee acts throughout her visit, such bonds to one's heritage can be easily broken or even completely destroyed. And when these bonds are finally destroyed it becomes impossible for people like Dee to understand the meaning of such little objects like the quilts in much the same way as it is impossible for her to even understand the origins and the legacy of her name. Again the history behind the quilts is really important so Mama describes more of it: "Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell's paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform that he wore in the Civil War" (495). Made out of many small pieces of Maggie's and Dee's ancestors' clothes, these quilts visually display the history of their family, including all of the struggles such as war, racism and poverty experienced by its members over last century. What makes these quilts even more valuable and important is the fact that because of her poverty Mama considers her heritage, contained in the things like these quilts, as the most important material object in her possession. Therefore she decides that the best way to honor this heritage would be to pass them to Maggie to be used like they were intended to by those who made the quilts and the legacy contained inside of them. • 29. Heritage, a Theme in Alice Walker´s "Everyday Use Alice Walker sets "Everyday Use" as a story of a mother and two daughters where the older daughter, Dee, is coming home to visit them after being away for a while. Walker sets the tone of the story by displaying how poor and uneducated the family is and how Dee while growing up was always looking for better things never appreciating the aspects of her life. As the story develops, the focus of the story is on a set of quilts made by the mother from pieces of clothing that belonged to her grandparents and the personal battle of who should really keep them in order to appreciate the heritage behind them. In "Everyday Use" a person can see how Maggie and Dee differ on the fact that heritage is a characteristic of pride that a person displays every day of their life versus a fad for a specific period of someone's life. While growing up Dee was always resentful of the lifestyle that she had as it did not measure to the better things she was always dreaming of. While the mother recounts the story of when their original house burned to the ground, she mentions how Dee stood there concentrating at the way the house slowly disappeared in the fire since "she hated the house that much" (Walker 298). This aspect sets the tone of how Dee was never willing to embody the characteristics of her life growing up, and it can be seen how she was ashamed of where she came from as later she writes her mother in a letter of how she will always try to visit them, but "she will never bring her ... I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain people work well in a group together or why they don't. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped me to figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project, The Student Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership skills and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself. Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced before. I wasn't hesitant about starting college but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I didn't know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different from what I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, "To connect you to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and success in the first year". I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now know about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan's peer mentor moments, whether she was talking about the Center for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan's peer mentor moments helped me locate the different resource around campus and even understand what they were about. Even though I haven't been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our class find them and know what those resources are about. This has helped me grow as a student because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question there are people that can provide me with information. The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In the beginning I didn't know about strengths. Now that I do, I see why they are important when beginning a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I'm going to accomplish my goals. It has four main steps, each of which are a process in themselves: placement on a tentative list, submission of a nomination file, evaluation by an Advisory Body, and a final decision by the World Heritage Committee. The entire process usually takes about a year and a half, but can vary depending of the time taken for each step (World Heritage Ireland, 2010). The State Party can demonstrate the authenticity and integrity by listing and defending any and all works completed on the site, whether for conservation, restoration, or adaptation (World Heritage Ireland, 2010). This history of works is important, because if a site has been reconstructed so many times that barely an of the original survives, the site may no longer have authenticity. The history of the site itself and the surrounding culture is also important, because it helps to demonstrate the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the site, as well as how it might fit the criteria as a unique or exceptional example of cultural traditions, civilizations living or dead, or any of the other ten criteria. The nomination file also has to contain a management plan to insure the OUV, authenticity, and integrity of the site are maintained for future generations. An Analysis Of Alice Walker And Kate Chopin Heritage, a lot of people see it as being only the past, with no significance to their everyday lives whatsoever, others see it as merely objects and money passed down from older generations to their younger generations, but really heritage means much more than that. Ones heritage is the lessons learned from elders and passed down to their children and grandchildren to help them not make the same mistakes they made before, heritage is the roots that makes a person who they are. The world without recollection of its's heritage, is a world without progress, a world that only stands still waiting for the same missteps to cycle back around. A person with no knowledge of their heritage is a person with no knowledge of themselves, and not knowing one 's self can lead to mishaps directing that individual down a path they would otherwise be able to avoid with a keen understanding of where they originate. Alice Walker and Kate Chopin both touch on the struggles and outcomes of not knowing or taking advantage of one 's heritage through their stories "Everyday Use" and "Desiree's baby." In both of the stories, the antagonist Dee/Wangero, and Armand has problems with whom they truly are because of their lack of knowledge and acceptance of who they truly are. Interpretations Of Heritage In Everyday Use By Alice Walker "Guided By My Heritage" ("In Search" 243) – Interpretations of Heritage In "Everyday Use," Alice Walker uses relics from Dee's past to demonstrate the importance of heritage through the understanding of inheritance and ancestry. Heritage in this story is understood as recognizing from where a person has originated. Walker correspondingly compares inheritance to art, something which should be used daily and passed on to future generations. Heritage and inheritance both have the same French root word: heriter– meaning inherit, implying that for one to truly realize and grasp their heritage they must first accept what they have inherited, in this case the quilts, and utilize them. In the story, being aware of one's heritage is a significant conflict that troubles the characters. At the end, Mama and Maggie are the ones that carry on their tradition in the present and truly understand the true meaning of heritage. Throughout the story exists an overlying theme of comprehension of one's heritage and ancestry. In contract to this theme, Dee is viewed as hypocritical when claiming she is reconnecting to her African roots, her supposed heritage, because numerous times she contradicts her beliefs and principles she is to uphold.
