1. Cropping system intensification
and diversification: where to
grow what- a remote sensing
approach A. N Singh
Sustainable Rice Production Systems for Uttar Pradesh,
7-9 June, 2019
IRRI South Asia Regional Center, Varanasi
2. Why cropping system intensification?
- enhancing farmers’ income by introducing new
crop or better remunerative crops
- enhancing food security
Why crop diversification?
-sustainability of farming
-sustainable use of resources
- risk coverage
3. Some examples of crop diversification/
intensification
• In Haryana, the Govt. is providing incentive for kharif
maize cultivation (@ Rs. 2000/- per acre, plus free
seed) to encourage farmers replace a part of rice
area to maize. Reason- declining ground water table
and intrusion of saline water.
• In some districts of central Uttar Pradesh, rabi maize
is grown on a large scale after early potato, replacing
wheat.
4. • When we introduce a new crop in the cropping
system, it is necessary to know whether the crop is
suitable for the climatic, soil and available conditions
of farmers’ fields, because two crops may have
contrastingly different soil and water requirements.
e.g. if we want to introduce a maize crop in a rice
growing area, the former prefers light textured soil
with well drained condition, while rice prefers water
stagnation
5. Where to grow what?
•growing crop/variety based on its site suitability
•parameters for site suitability assessment of a crop
are:
climatic suitability
soil suitability
moisture /water availability
Varietal suitability assessment may need assessing
any specific requirement of that variety.
6. Remote sensing
• Remote sensing broadly means taking a photograph
of the surface of the earth using satellites, aircrafts,
or drones.
• Several remote sensing satellites have been launched
by India, starting with the first IRS-1A in 1988.
• These satellites take the photograph of the earth
continuously, covering entire earth.
• The repetitive photograph of the same area helps in
monitoring the growth of a crop and also the soil
condition.

11. Where to disseminate Swarna -Sub1 seeds in flood-
prone areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh
Floods are common in eastern U.P.
Swarna-Sub1, a variety with submergence tolerance of about
17 days
Dissemination of seeds in initial years by the Govt. faced a
problem of where to distribute limited amount of available
seeds.
Mapping and assessment of inundated area on different
dates led to the identification of villages where floods of less
than 17 days occur.
