This should be on a new Excel document if possible
3 Evaluate the contributions made to Beauty and the Beast by the following people:
Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay for the animation and lengthened it to write the book for
the musical, she also most recently worked on the live action version of Beauty and the Beast
meaning she has now worked on 3 versions of the story, she also is the person who created the
character of Belle and how she is a role model for feminists, and a woman before her time, she also
created the triangle of the Beast, Belle and Gaston and how although Gaston is meant to be the
most handsome he has an ugly personality and even though the Beast is supposed to be a monster
he wins the girl in the end. Alan Menken did the musical score with Howard Ashman for the
animation and composed six new songs for the musical, he approached Disney about a Broadway
musical and they eventually came back to him with the idea of Beauty and the Beast. Howard
Ashman worked with Alan Menken writing the lyrics however died before the film was released, Tim
Rice took over and he wrote the lyrics for the six new songs in the musical. Matt West
choreographed the musical and Robert Jess Roth directed it.
4 Discuss some of the technical challenges of turning the 1991 Disney animated filmof Beauty and
the Beast into a stage show.
With animation things like the transformation can be done easily however with a stage show the
transformation of the Enchantress and the Beast are done in front of a live audience, therefore it has to be
masked with lights and effects on stage. Also numbers such as Be Our Guest are difficult to do on stage as a
large amount of cast members are needed to all be on stage at once with lots of props and effects going on
at the same time so it is a challenge to put together. Another difficulty is the costumes as the actors need
to be able to sing and dance and jump around on stage however the show requires when to be dressed as
a clock and candlestick. The Beasts makeup is also a challenge as the actor needs to be able to sing and
move however large amounts of prosthetics are needed to create a beast like face. Special effects are also
needed as Lumiere has flames coming from his hands and head therefore pyrotechnics are needed or an
alternative such as cloth being blown by a fan to give an illusion of fire.
5 Put these songs into the correct order as heard in the show: 5
1. Belle
2. No matter what
3. Me
