2. Mise en Scene Location
My film has a very derelict setting, beginning with a beware sign and a barbed wire fence. I have
inserted many key codes and conventions within my film, showing an eerie and lonely
atmosphere which enables the audience to convey the idea that not much life is left on earth.
This is essentially the point of a post apocalyptic film, to show the audience an entirely different
earth then the one we live in today. The barbed wire and beware sign in the beginning of my film,
helps to create this sense of danger that the planet has now that it is so lifeless.
Incorporating this image delivers many thoughts into the audiences mind. Providing questions
such as what to beware of?? The film is also mostly on a grassland area with downstream rivers
throughout, showing significance to main characters as it could be their source of drinking water
they live on, and have to bathe in.
3. Mise en Scene Props
• One of our Mise en Scene props we have incorporated in our film is a hammer. The hammer
shows significance to a main character as he uses it to defend himself at all times or attack
anyone that crosses his path. Once again, proving to the audience that weapons are
necessary for survival in the post apocalyptic era. At the end on one of the main characters is
stripped of his clothing and left for dead, so without a weapon in this era, it can cost you
your life.
• Another prop that I have in my film is a gas mask, the gas mask in my film is a very significant
prop to the main character and the audience. Since the main character has it on
continuously, the audience can easily come to the conclusion that the earth is now polluted
with dangerous gases from whatever catastrophe has happened previously. So when the
main character gets his gas mask removed from him at the end of the film, he dies due to the
fact he does not have this prop.
• Furthermore, we have implemented a mysterious wanted poster that the audience can tell
must be a quite old poster. As both character is in the film constantly have masks on, it gives
the audience an insight that this person has to be a person in one of those masks but
essentially the wanted poster in my film has been used as a prop to create a sense of tension
and wonder, as in why this person is wanted? What have they done to be wanted?
4. Costume/Make up
• Both characters in my film are wearing two completely different costumes. One character is
wearing a camouflage jumper, ripped jeans, boots and a gas mask. From what this character
is wearing, the audience can tell that the character is lacking resources due to the character
having big rips in his jeans. Also, we have incorporated the camouflage jumper so that the
character can be seen as one who tries to adapt and survive by staying hidden to others who
may attempt to hurt him. The boots are for traction for where the character specifically lives,
so the character can have an advantage if running or climbing over objects. Identifying the
character as a scavenger. His gas mask also prevents him from dying of the toxic gases on
earth in his era.
• In contrast to this, the other character in my film wears a leather biker jacket with a black
hoodie, ripped jeans, black gloves and silver ghost mask. From this costume you can tell that
this character is not wearing clothing essential for survival. However, he is wearing a
costume that is more accustomed to hunting. The mask he is wearing is to conceal his
identity, not to protect him from the dangerous fumes of the world.
5. Music & Sound
The music in my film has been specifically chosen to match the genre of my film which is a post
apocalyptic, setting the tone throughout the duration of the film. The music in my film is non-
copyright therefore no issues should occur as a result of the music used; the song is called
‘Apocalypse’. The music in my film is sad and dramatic which ties in to the thought of the world
effectively coming to an end. It also helps to add to the effect of the characters lifestyles. The
dramatic sounds contribute to the chasing of one character and the dramatic movements of the
two. It is sad in a way due to the males both changing in order to adapt as the audience would
know that the two characters in my film were never originally living like this. The weapon one
character is holding signifies that he is willing to harm or even kill the other character for stealing
his survival pack which is a very dramatic situation especially involving the chase scene. Besides
the dramatic apocalyptic music, my film has natural sounds within it too to add effect to the
actions characters are doing, for example the trudging foot steps of a character is heard when he
runs on the train tracks in my film.
6. Camera angles and Shots
• Many close ups where used to represent the trouble and the fight for survival the character
is in. At the beginning of the film there is a close up of an abandoned beware sign to amplify
the post apocalyptic setting he is in. Then suddenly changed to a mid shot of an old barbed
wire fence within me approaching the camera which causes the mid shot to change to a close
up which clearly shows of my gas mask.
• Other camera angles were used like long shots of the main character to show the antagonist
in the background. This is used to build tension within the audience. Towards the ending of
my film. We used high shots on the main character looking through the stolen bag. This was
to make him look powerless and weak, which links to his thoughts at the end of film after
reading the note.
7. Edits
•Within my short film many edits were used to help build a tense atmosphere within the
audience and to construct a fast pace. An example of this was my additive dissolve effect I used
at one point before it goes into a long shot of the character on the roof watching the thief run
away. This added to the suspense as the audience had no clue the character had eyes on him
evading his territory.
•Another edit that was used in my film was the film dissolve effect, this fit well into my film as
the character looks up whilst running, and then the dissolve fits in smoothly to him seeing the
other character and running off.
8. Narrative
The world’s resources are coming to a complete ‘end’ and only few species of animals are
surviving, mostly dangerous animals. One of the species being humans; or in different form
‘mankind’. The film is set in the future in one of the few existing, isolated villages in the world;
however the town has no resources so the humans that live there rely on slaughtering each other
to preserve the remains of the world’s resources, Such as water, food and even oxygen. My short
film will pursue the life of a single man, ‘Will Pattison’ as he tries to remain in this survival game.
What’s left of the world has just gone through a highly toxic flu, which destroyed most of the
remaining species and power plants releasing radioactive materials. With the air being filled with
highly toxic diseases and gases anyone who has survived the past 5 years of the 'exhaustion’
needs to wear essential survival clothes and gear, but would be lucky if they were without wear
and tear. Such as a gas mask, to establish he manages to survive the destruction from the
polluted air. However, scavenging is apart of survival in his world. He comes across another
survivor; who doesn’t take to kindly of ‘Will Pattison’ stealing his survival pack.
