Audience research for AS Media thriller opening

1. THRILLER MISE EN SCENE SURVEY
Summary

2. 11/15 chose Bellatrix Lestrange. This is 73.3% of my target
population and therefore this look proves to be the most effective.
This could be due to her being extremely well known, and thus
leading to many people choosing her.
1) Which characters influence would you most like to
see in an antagonist (villain) ?
These two options each got 2 votes. This
is only 13.3% each and therefore they do
not prove to be effective.

3. 2) Which weapon is most effective?
 9/15 people thought a gun was most
effective, this is 60%. Gun’s are very
common within thriller films and may
be why many people find them
effective.
 3/15 people thought a knife was the
most effective. This is only 20%, but
still proves to be effective. Thrillers
such as psycho use this very well,
however I feel it would be unrealistic
and look fake to use it within our
thriller opening.
 Again 20% thought drugs were and
effective murder weapon. This is a
very unusual weapon and may be why
it was a less popular option. However
it can still be used in thrillers to create
mystery.

4. What colours would you expect an ‘evil

The most chosen colour was black, this may be because it is associated with evil,
darkness, death and is also a typical thriller colour. On the other hand white was not
chosen at all, except from when it was paired with black. This could be because it is
associated with innocence, and therefore the complete opposite of the proposed
character (Enzo)

5. 4) Which location is most effective?
 66.67% thought the house the most effective.
Houses a location that everyone can associate
with and therefore become engaged with a film.
It also creates a false sense of security. This
particular house has an eerie feeling to it which
is common in thrillers.
 20% chose the forest. Forests a good locations
for creating mystery, this is because people or
things can be hidden behind them.
 13.3% chose the prison. The picture I chose
may have been deceiving as it does not look
like a prison and this means results may not be
reliable. However this was still a prison and
didn’t show to be effective. It would also be a
very hard location for us to film in and therefore
would not be an option for our thriller opening.

6. How will this influence our
opening?
Firstly Enzo’s appearance is loosely based on Bellatrix
Lestrange, my survey clarifies that this will be effective. He
hair will be messy curled and her makeup will create a run
down appearance. She will also be dressed in all black to
emphasise she is the antagonist and also evil. Secondly
the gun which was voted for question two is a prop we
have for our thriller. We will use this as it is a thriller
convention and will also allow us to create interesting
sound techniques. Lastly we will use a house to film our
opening. This is because it proved to be the most effective,
but is also a convenient location to access and film in as
we all have a house. We may use my house as it is very
old and has a slightly freaky feel to it.
