2. Stab !!
This clearly represents a killing which is the main backbone to most common thrillers. There is
obvious connotations to this shot. Rather than what is in the shot, this hints to what could
happen next. There are a whole range of things that could occur, different ways of killing, killing
different people etc. The fact that this shot is the visual representation of what he is thinking this
further increases the possibilities of what could occur, because anything can happen in
somebodies imagination. The instant climax was designed to startle the audience, this happens in
many thrillers to help put the audience on their toes. Furthermore the normality of the weapon is
shocking. The next shot returns to normal this shows the dark depths of his psyche in how quickly
it can change from normal to evil.
3. The Title !
The meaning behind the word is paragon is ideal or a ‘shining example’ This could be
interpreted as an oxymoron meaning a bad example, this hints towards the films bad nature.
Many thrillers do this like ‘Terribly Happy’ When the letters g and o are sliced up this happens
occasionally in thrillers. The font is straightforward (Further acting oxymoronic) also it looks
journalistic (our main character is a journalist) and the colours are bloody connoting death and
pain. The white background hints towards the clinical, This could be the intentions of the killer.
The contrast between the clinical white and the bloody red could represent beauty being
tarnished by evil, this hints to what kind of victims he choses i.e. women.
4. Staring !
The moment we see the ear. The audience start questioning our character as to why he is
interested in the ear. Confusion is a good way to draw your audience in, this is a common
occurrence in thrillers like ‘inception’ it keeps the audience on edge, therefore becoming
more involved in the plot. The fact that our character is interested in the ear further shows
how unconventional and distorted the psyche is of our character.
5. The Blonde !
This shot shows the naive blonde whom has no idea of the situation about to come. The idea of
‘the dumb blonde’ is played about with in thrillers, in our we have made our character represent a
stereotypical blonde, who is unaware and self absorbed. We show this when she drones on and
on, we added a muffled effect to symbolise this plus to add space for our inner voice.
6. Close up !
Close up shots are used in thrillers to only reveal a certain part of a shot to
create confusion. Here we have used it to concentrate closer on his thoughts,
the closer we shot him the more in depth our understanding of him is. This gives
our audience a front row seat into what he is thinking. In this shot we can see
that he Is concentrating maybe on ways to kill, or dispose of the body, however
there is only one way to find out, to watch the film.
7. The notebook !
This close up of his notebook. The ear can link to the last screen shot. The fact that
we can’t see some of what he is writing also creates tension and apprehension. The
actually ear is really creepy and leaves the door open to many possibilities of what
is to come. The idea that he keeps a notebook means that he likes to keep track of
what he does, it could also mean that he is neat and organised. This is represented
in our piece through is clean and tidy desk.
8. The atmosphere !
The dark after hours atmosphere creates tension and apprehension. The fact
that there are no other colleagues around to witness what happens further
leaves the door open to possibilities. Their proximity is quite close therefore
suggesting some forms of connection and intimacy. She may think that he likes
her, she might like him. However we know, from the inner voice, that he doesn’t
like her. The closed blinds also further shows how alone they are.
9. The sexual tension !
They are looking at each other in a sexual way. Furthermore it is after office hours. Sexual
tension is created in most thrillers to keep the audience interested. This is why we did
this in our thriller. Also to attract the female audience. This further reinstates the
stereotypical blonde, and how she is naive etc.
10. close up !
This shot was towards the end of the sequence. This is a slow motion shot which
is very creepy and is straight after the ear shot. The inner voice dictates ‘Her ear’
this also creates apprehension as to what could happen straight after, is he going
to kill her know. This is also a very important part of our piece because it changes
the piece from quite weird to very creepy, it’s the first part of the piece which
tells the audience what he is interested in. This really helps create tension and
keep the audience on edge as to what will happen later on.
