that has had issues with bullying, finally what steps a company can take to make sure their employees have a bully free workplace.
Bullying
Bullying can be found in any job. Bullying is a malicious attack on a person, it can include name calling, gossiping about someone, or maybe even
false work reports. It can be so extreme that it can stress an employee out to the point that can become physically or mentally ill (Ehrenkranz, 2016).
Bullying can come from anyone within a company from a co–worker, to a member of management.
How it affects the workplace

actions, job performance can decrease, and productivity can even decrease due to the co–workers not being able to work ... Show more content on

employees about the stressors faced both on–the–job and off. Offer Confidentiality: Do not single out employees dealing with stress, and reprimand
anyone who does. Singling out employees or discussing their issues is illegal and can result in a law suit costing millions of dollars. Incentives: Offer
the employee a discount or some type of reward for participating. This can increase the enrollment in the stress management program. As a result,
employee morale is improved as well as productivity on the job. Company–wide social activities: "Employees are less stressed when given the

Workplace Bullying In The Workplace
Introduction
As a new gradate nurses enters the working field they hear the terms "fresh meat" or "the old eat their young". Feeling like you don't have enough
clinical experience can cause uncertainty and anxiety. But hearing the stories about workplace bullying and intimidation can cause a feeling of
intimidation. "Bullying involves a real or perceived imbalance of power and repetition of the negative behavior" (Gumbus A., Lyons B. 2012) There
are different types of behaviors, such as threating or yelling, it can be more insidious and passive, like refusing to cooperate or perform necessary
tasks. Bullying is a serious issue, it's an ongoing problem in the healthcare workplace. Bullying causes demoralization of the victim and decreased job
satisfaction, as well as the individual feeling sadness, anxiety, depression and isolation. This disruptive behavior can foster medical errors which can
lead to harm of the patients. Nurse bullying is also costly for healthcare employers. It often results in increased turnover when nurses who are bullied
choose to quit their jobs rather than remain in a work environment that makes them miserable.
Factors influencing workplace bullying
Given the negative consequences of workplace bullying on the mental health and well–being of employees and the performance of any organization, it
is important to understand the reasons that trigger the development of this social phenomenon. "From a humanistic perspective, this predominantly

Through this study we can understand why we must address workplace bullies and develop action steps to improve working conditions. In this age of
global growth, diversity and inclusion, this is an important topic to know about and understand the impacts that not addressing the issues will have
within the organization.
Significance to Writer Workplacebullying is of significance to the writer because of personal experience. Having previously experienced workplace

Additionally, if engagement or morale is low because of bullying, this causes further problems in accomplishment of the mission. Customers, as
stakeholders, are impacted by workplace bullying. Turnover, low engagement, and low morale can impact the services they receive or the quality of
the products that they are purchasing. As word of poor service or quality spreads, an organization will be less likely to attract new customers in
addition to the struggle to retain the old ones. In publicly traded corporations, investors as stakeholders must be concerned about this issue due to the
impacts on service, hiring costs, and profits. Lower profits will lessen the return on their investment. In government agencies, taxpayers are
stakeholders. The costs of workplace bullying can result in wasted taxpayer money for recruiting costs, legal fights, and the negative press that is
received when high turnover or other issues come into the public light.

Bullying In The Workplace
Workplace bullying is a concern for many stakeholders such as nurses, doctors, healthcare employers, patients, families, The Joint Commission,
Occupation Safety and Health Association (OSHA), national– level Nurse and Medical professional associations, and state–level affiliated nursing
associations. Defining and analyzing the problem is the first step in addressing it. In the past, workplace bullying was referred to as "Nurses eating
their young." There are many names for the various levels of workplace bullying like horizontal and lateral violence, hostility, mobbing, and verbal
abuse. Bullying actions can take place overtly or covertly. Nurse–to–Nurse bullying is known to occur during interaction communications and

The strength of the evidence for workplace bullying strategies is well passed the emerging stage but has not quite achieved the unequivocal stage. The
tools such as state regulations, federal workplace safety policies, and professional nursing association recommendations provide important impetus and
support for nurses and hospitals undertaking this transformation. They represent the basis for program development but they fall short of clearly
defining the insidiousness of workplace bullying much less restricting the damage it causes. Bullying interventions should be on equal footing with
sexual harassment and racial discrimination laws in terms of enforcement. Currently employers do not adequately address workplace bullying as a
phenomenal cost to their organization and to the good employees. For example, bullying contributes to excessive turnover, absenteeism, and sometimes
excessive legal fees. Why would the employer rationally opt to pay the higher cost of bullying and defend the destructive individual vs. doing what is

The Prevalence And Effect Of Workplace
Workplace bullying is a significant but complex issue that presents challenges for a large portion of Australian firms. Depicted as a form of
psychological violence, there have been continuous cases resulting in serious mental injury or even death. Accordingly over the past decade, research
against workplace bullying has rapidly increased internationally including Australia. Since its first study in the UK, following studies agree on the fact
that workplace bullying has become a hazard affecting people in their daily work–life. Special attention is required as it is not a matter exclusive to a
certain region or industry. Its negative impacts being evident, managing and preventing it is a major task for all workplaces concerned. ... Show more

It found that 6.8 percent of Australian workers have been bullied at work six months prior to being surveyed, with more than half experiencing
bullying for longer than six months period. (Dollard 2012)
Also, the news article on 'the human cost of workplace bullying' claimed that such conditions were costing Australian economy between 6 to 36billion
dollars a year. The major reasons pinpointed were the reduced productivity, increase in number of absenteeism and turnover. In addition to its impact on
economy, workplace bullying has a devastating effect on the individual employees. Bullying can bring significant damage to the victim's wellbeing,
which in extreme cases leads to suicide. Regarding a research conducted by Toni Mellington, an Australian health psychologist, there is a direct
negative relationship between bullying and health. (Gregor 2015) Employees who claimed to have been bullied reported poorer health, with an
increase in severity of bullying increasing the chance of poorer health. The finding also suggested that the experience of merely witnessing bullying can
also have a negative impact on one's health, backing up the fact that bullying affects not only the individual but the entire firm.
The eye–catching studies above urge a prompt reaction towards resolving workplace bullying. Currently everyone at workplace is potentially at the
risk of being bullied. Knowing the prevalence of bullying and the

Workplace Harassment In The Workplace
The workplace has an environment where people having different communication styles, personalities and views come to interact. These differences
play a significant role in sourcing these workplace issues. These factors can ultimately lead to tension and stress at workplace for people who are
involved. Even though, all colleagues have all the rights for fair treatment and they should feel safe in their workplace, some employees are bullied
harassed or discriminated. Specifically, people, who belong to LGBT community, are unsafe in their workplaces by non–discriminatory policies.
Moreover, few of the employees might feel dissatisfied with their performance and these people have to struggle in order to perform at their
workplace. These people also face the difficulty in finding a suitable job that matches their abilities and interests (Hershcovis 499–519) Employee
mistreatment problem can result in low job performance, less productivity, termination of work, increased dissatisfaction, anxiety, stress and other
mental problems. Workplace harassment can also result on other legal problems. APA notes that insecurity in job and lack of moral support at
workplace may lead to exacerbated workplace problems. We will discuss some of the major problems that are faced by victims of maltreatment at
workplace (Maqsood, Finegan, & Walker 295–301) Some of the jobs involve higher degree of work stress. According to the theory of job demand

Bullying In The Workplace
Introduction
Workplace bullying has received growing attention over the past decade in regard to organizational research. Researchers are continually conducting
studies exposing the negative consequences of workplace bullying at the level of the individual as well as the organization. For example, people that
experience workplace bullying are more likely to call in sick, take unpaid vacation days, leave work early and not stay late when needed, misuse
company resources, and are less likely to go above and beyond the call of duty in the workplace (Sperry, 2009). This is detrimental to an organization
because it is associated with decreased productivity as well as less overall morale from employees. Similarly, victims of workplace bullying are ... Show

In general, organizations that are more bureaucratic tend to have higher instances of workplace bullying (O'Moore, Seigne, McGuire, & Smith, 1998).
Similarly, work environments with a culture of bullying tend to only make things worse for victims. For example, high stress businesses such as law
firms exhibit high levels of workplace bullying ("Workplace Bullying Institute – WBI – Help, Education, Research," 2014). These environments also
create an "earn–your–keep" culture, which not only encourages bullies to engage in negative acts, it also suggests that this behavior is necessary to
prove oneself at work. A dissatisfying work environment can also perpetuate workplace bullying. Einarsen et al. (1994) and Vartia (1996) found strong
correlations between the prevalence of workplace bullying and dissatisfaction with the social climate in a workplace. These findings suggest that certain
work environments are more conducive (and even encouraging) of workplace

Importance Of Workplace Democracy In The Workplace
As Mahatma Ghandi once said: "I understand democracy as something that gives the weak the same chance as the strong".
A strong public demand, in the past two decades, for greater democracy and employees' participation has been growing and management is being put
under pressure to meet this demand in all sectors (Foley and Polanyi, 2006). In all political theories, one idea is never changing, democracy isn't only
the democracy of the state institutions but it includes all organizations and enterprises of the society. The concept ofworkplace democracy was forgotten
or actually neglected for so many years that now it is being revived again especially with Theresa May's speech.
If we want to define workplace democracy in a very general way, it is the association of democratic policies and practices in the workplace. It is a way
to realize self–actualization, reach individual autonomy and freedom and it is the root of motivation to claim rights and participatory decision–making
(Pausch, 2013). For the liberal thinking, it constitutes of having a set of institutions and representatives that express and aggregate the voice of
individual citizens. It is based on a majority rule.
Individuals should, to a greater extent, be able to take control over their decisions and their workplace conditions that affect their life. For democracy
to be 'a way of life' at work, transparency is the first rule that should be applied as well as economic power. Employee participation in all ways

Workplace Bullying In The Workplace
The situational conflict that our group chose exemplified workplace bullying among the nursing staff in a Hospice facility. In the intraprofessional
conflict scenario by "Wineland_Anette Discussion 5.1 (2017)," a nurse was targeted by a fellow coworker who was overwhelmed with high levels of
stress and resorted to bullying as an outlet. Aggressive behavior in the workplace damages professional relationships, impairs patient and employee
satisfaction, increases employee injuries and illnesses, and reduces quality of patient care (Houck & Colbert, 2016). As complexity leaders, our team
seeks to make suggestions for resolution using evidence–based research for appropriate methods of conflict analysis, mediation, and negotiation.
Conflict Analysis
Conflict analysis is vital for the complexity leader to gain insight into issues of conflict to avoid damage to the victim, the workplace environment, other
staff members, and patients (McKibben, 2017). Conflict analysis allows nurse leaders to distinguish between perceived conflict and the presence of
actual conflict (McKibben, 2017). In this scenario, one nurse's exposure to a stressful, end–of–life position creates frustration which is then
conceptualized by another nurse as being bullied (Crowell, 2016). The complexity leader takes steps to resolve the conflict by engaging in crucial
conversations (Crowell, 2016) to clarify and examine different points of view about the situation (Folse, 2015). Additionally, the complexity

Without the use of a "Toxin Handler" to ameliorate the emotional pain, workplace toxicity affects the bottom line of an organization through lost
productivity from distraction, debilitating health issues, and attrition (Scholten). Workplace Incivility: "I don't have time to be nice." Unlike
aggressive, violent, and abusive workplaces, where the intent to cause harm is apparent, incivility takes on more ambiguous forms, where the
perceptions of the instigator, target, and observer(s), must factor together to determine intent (Andersson, 1999). General incivility, as a primary
precursor to a toxic workplace, can be described as rude behavior, or a disregard for others within the organization, stemming from a lack of
recognition, or ignorance, of co–workers emotions and values, often taking form in deviance as a protest of dissatisfaction (Kelloway, 2010), and
leads to a downward spiral of malcontent. Pearson classifies Incivility as "Low–intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm" stemming
from "Anti–social behavior in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect".Despite the intent, or lack thereof, the effects of incivility in the
workplace are strictly damaging, and as such, must be addressed before spiraling out of control. Examples of workplace incivility include ignoring
advice and belittling ideas, lack of active listening, taking credit for shared work and public criticism or insults (Johnson, 2001). Even negative

employee absenteeism and healthcare costs for organizations by these individuals that display these toxic behaviors. Consequentially, even though
there is an increase in these toxic and counterproductive behaviors in the workplace, there have not been solutions established to determine how to

Causes of Workplace Stress
Causes of Workplace Stress
There are many factors that can exacerbate the causes of stress in the workplace. The challenges faced by people in the workplace make the job more
exciting and interesting. However, there are challenges that can also have negative effects. The normal reaction to stress is tension, anxiety and
excitement and work–life goes back to normal after a while. If however, the stress becomes overwhelming or if it happens too often, there can be a
problem getting back to the normal state and one is no longer able to relax. The most common causes of stress in the workplace are the following:

Work bullies or co–workers who make life miserable for you can also be a cause of workplace stress.
Job stress for women can also be caused by sexual harassment from colleagues or superiors. The constant worry and isolation gives so much tension
to a female employee leading to a hostile work environment. This is a situation in which one is forced to deal with an intimidating and offensive
workplace everyday. This affects the ability to perform and to grow and be given credit in one's chosen career. Success and advancement becomes
hard, making the female worker frustrated and unsatisfied.
One of the worst causes of stress in almost all workplace is a hostile working environment that can come as a result of workplace bullying, sexual
harassment or discrimination. These problems can only be solved if a worker is well aware of her rights and if the company or the organization has
provided a proper forum that will address and solve such problems.
In the workplace, stress can be the result of any number of situations. Some examples include:
Categories of Job StressorsExamples
Factors unique to the job workload (overload and underload)

"Career and job ambiguity" – a feeling of helplessness and lack of control. "How can I succeed if I don 't know what 's expected of me or if my job
here is uncertain?" Stress levels are affected by vagueness within management. A lot of people think this is a lack of communication from the manager
to the employee, but I feel that it is the responsibility of the employee to seek out what is expected of him or her. For example, if you get a bad
evaluation or raise, simply go to your boss and ask him what you can do differently over the next year to enable you to get a better evaluation or
increase in pay.
"No feedback – good or bad" – prevents people from knowing how they are doing and whether they are meeting expectations. Stress related to this
issue is typically one of management misperception as to the amount, importance, and effectiveness of feedback to employees. Whatever the cause,
employees are easily stressed by lack of communication in this area. This is again something you may not have control over, but it is still a good
demonstation of why a lack of communication is damaging.

CRA is a vague area and it can be one person's word against the other when it goes sour. Ethical principles are based on the individual or group and
what they think is right or wrong. What may seem right to some maybe wrong to others. So companies need to keep in mind the different beliefs.
There is also a right to privacy, so by implementing a CRA it should be clear. Nonfraternization policies "Having clear policies that govern behaviors
and relationships acceptable in the workplace is the first step employers should take to control dangerous workplace romances" (Lieber 2008). There
are different types of nonfraternization policies. Some employees ban on any dating in the workplace. They are not legally enforced because they are
considered overbroad. Another policy prohibits supervisors from dating and employee because of the power between the two may cause the employee
to feel pressured to start or stay in the relationship and finally the most common and most recommended policy prohibits supervisors from dating
subordinates who are in the supervisor's direct chain of command. Ethical behavior should be considered when allowing workplace romance. I think
from an employer's perspective they have to consider certain things such as respecting a person's moral principles such as honesty, fairness, equality,
respecting the dignity, diversity and the rights of other people. Being ethical means doing the right thing in any situation.

Workplace Stress In The Workplace
Nowadays workplace stress is a major concern for several organisations. According to surveys from the American institute of stress (2017), 80% of
the workers experience distress at work and half of them prefer to learn to manage stress. In general, job stress is a common issue, which does not
only affect organisations but also workers. Noted by Stranks (2005), stress can arise from various sources, including low ambiguity and personal
conflicts which are likely to contribute to the inefficiency of organisations and workers, namely, increasing absenteeism or low performances in
employees. The essay will primarily discuss the problems and solutions of stress for organisations and individuals, respectively. Subsequently, it will
compare the solutions for both sides of view. Thus, this essay will seek the most effective techniques to combat workplace stress at both organisation
and individual levels by comparing several alternatives of stress management
Unquestionably, modern businesses have become more complex as compared to the past. Such complexity contributes to high pressure at work and
Fontana (1997) states that workplace stress can come from several reasons, such as role conflict, frequent clashes with colleagues or superiors and
inadequate training. Consequently, these causes might generate detrimental effects to organisations. Referring to EU–OSHA (2017), the negative
effects include the loss of productivity, the increase in absenteeism and other health–related costs.

An Analysis of Workplace Harassment and Bullying in Today's Society
Introduction
Workplace harassment and bullying occurs when an employee subjects another employee to degrading behaviour, whether verbal abuse and threats or
actual physical violence. It is an inappropriate expression of power that affects workers and their productivity in an unfavourable way (Spry, 1998).
Management, and other types of employees, who occupy high–status roles sometimes believe that harassing their subordinates is within their rights and
make demands of the lower–status employees (Langton, Robbins, Judge, 2010, p. 313).
Harassment is often a result of stress, power, differences of opinion, undefined expectations of management, absent policies, and tasks ... Show more

It has typically been thought of as a type of harassment that only women experience in the workplace; however, men can be victims of sexual
harassment as well. Sexual harassment demeans its victims, whether female or male.
A victim of sexual harassment can be anyone within an organization, although some individuals are more prone to victimization. For example, women
within an organization who are highly educated, young, and seeking to move up within the ranks of the organization can be perceived by men as a
threat and so are targeted (Mueller, De Coster, & Estes, 2001). The corporate culture in which individuals work can also influence who becomes a
victim of sexual harassment. Women who work in male–dominated occupations or work–groups are more likely to be harassed than women who work
in female–dominated or gender integrated occupations or work–groups (Mueller et al., 2001). Corporate cultures that are more open about sexual
matters may become too lenient regarding this topic which can potentially lead to increased sexual harassment cases. It has been

Workplace mediation is attracting increased attention from practitioners and policymakers as an alternative rights–based disciplinary. The profile of
mediation as an alternative method for resolving individual workplace disputes has boosted in recent years and the use of workplace mediation has
increased in Europe and other countries including Australia. This is a result of dissatisfaction with traditional rights based disputes procedures and the
cost of litigation regarding employment issues.
Workplace bullying
Workplace bullying is common and it is also illegal. Workplace bullying is often described as a behavior that is directed towards an employee or
group of employees that is repeated and unwelcome and that a reasonable person having regard to all circumstances would consider being offensive
and intimidating. However a conflict is not regarded at workplace bullying if it occurs one time.
The Fair Work Act has the last couples of years provided workers with a way to stop bullying at job. Nerveless has "workers" a really broad definition
in the Act and it covers contractors, out workers and permanent and fixed term contract employees and apprentices. The Act provided that if an
investigation of workplace bullying is not substantiated mediation might be needed. The Act can therefor be seen as and encouragement to use
mediation as a tool to tackle allegation of workplace bullying. However it is important that the mediator assists the parties and helps them understand

Historically sexual harassment was strictly associated with women's work as a way of exploiting women's sexuality in a labour context; trying to
force sex in a context of economic vulnerability was utilized as a way to keep women out of certain jobs and protect male power (Levan, 2011). In one
of the first studies of sexual harassment, consciousness raising efforts groups revealed how nearly every woman had some experience of quitting or
being fired from a job because of the sexual behaviour of male supervisors or co–workers (Levan, 2011). From this the "Working Women United in the

There are many reasons why bullying happens in a workplace. Here are a few of them. Bullies are not punished and they thrive. Laws are non–existent
or very weak that they don't help anyone. The company does not have the will to stop it from happening. Coworkers do not do anything to help stop
it. They just stand by and watch or ignore it. The workplace principles reward cutthroat behaviors. There are a few hyper–aggressive people who have
some social problems. Those who are at the top of management are the bullies. Bullying is a larger part of society as a whole. Bullies do follow
directions from the top management. No one in the company has the ability to stop it. (Namie, 2016) Those are the top ten reasons bullying happens. ...

Workplace Bullying And The Workplace
Workplace bullying is something that is a big contemporary problem, that I feel is often pushed under the rug and not discussed. Workplace bullying
can effect a person's health, and it can also affect their role as it relates to their workplace performance. I would like to discuss workplace bullying to
help those that has been through this or is currently going through this. I want to provide different steps workers can take if they feel they are being
bullied in their workplace. According to the WorkplaceBullying Institute (2015) workplace bullying is repeated, health–harming mistreatment of one
or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators. Bullying in the workplace is one of the most contemporary problems I feel that we are
faced with today. According to the Waitt Institute (2016) Workplace Bullying is an Epidemic and 37% of American workers, an estimated 54 million
people, have been bullied at work.
Types of Bullying
There are different types of bullying that take place. Workplace bullying can consist of verbal abuse using choice words such as a form of attacking
another person. Another type of bullying can be offensive behavior that can consist of verbal or nonverbal, it can also be threatening and humiliating,
or intimidating actions towards another person. Workplace bullying can also be a person interfering with another person work such as trying to

The attitudes and morale of the employees is directly related to job performance. A victim of harassment will not function at 100 percent efficiency.
Victims of harassment are often distracted and are not able to focus on their core responsibilities. Dr. Heinz Leymann conducted a study in 2002 that
estimated the cost of bullying to an organization is $100,000 to $250,000 per year. (www.leymann.html) This is an example of bullying in the
workplace negatively impacting the bottom line of the company.
In severe cases of harassment an employee's health can be affected negatively. An employee can become physically and mentally exhausted from the
abuse and this will lead to several days off work. A recent study found that a worker that has been a victim of bullying missed work 26% more then
an employee who was not bullied. (www.mediationworks.com) Employees that does not show up for work will have a direct effect on the financials of
the company. Providing a healthy work environment for employees and management is essential to the success of a company.
Several employees who are victims see no opportunity for the harassment to stop and feel like the only option is to find a new place of employment.
This decision validates the actions of the bully and significantly affects the morale of the remaining team members. The training costs associated with
new employees negatively impacts the bottom line of a company. Retaining

Bullying And Its Effects On The Workplace
Bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in today's society. It is most commonly thought to be found in schools or online, but it is becoming
increasing popular in the workplace. Organizations must establish anti–bullying policies to stop this detrimental behavior. Targets of workplace
bullying often suffer from a multitude of health problems such as depression and anxiety. In this paper, we will examine the reasons whybullying has
become so common in the workplace, the damaging effects, and what can be done to help stop this behavior. Bullying should be considered as a
problem for the entire organization, not just an issue for the target. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is
repeated, health–harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators (WBI, 2015). Bullying can come in many
forms including abusive conduct that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating. Along with the verbal abuse, there can be sabotage, or work
interference that impacts work performance. The WBI states that 35% of the workforce in the United States have been bullied. This equals 1 in 3
workers who have been victimized. As a result of this staggering statistic, organizations must address this problem. This paper will expose the traumatic
effects of bullying, and will show interventions and recommendations for a solution to this growing social injustice. Bullying, or mobbing, was first

When you put business before your employees, you can create problems that you may not even think about. Wallner is probably one of the most
unethical people I have heard of. If you were to pay off an individual in certain workplaces at certain companies right now, there would be so many
lawsuits that we wouldn't be able to keep up. Even to mention to an employee that you would pay them off can cause a lawsuit. If anyone were to
ask me that question I would leave the company because that sexual harassment will probably happen to me again, let alone my supervisor clearly
doesn't care about my safety. You can't buy off employee silence; it is unethical and simply wrong. Not only is this company making a terrible
name for itself, but also it is giving their employee's a dangerous and careless work environment. The employer is liable if it knew or should have
known about the harassment, unless it took immediate and appropriate corrective action (Workplace Fairness). Not only is Wallner putting his
employee's at risk, but himself as well. It doesn't matter if you have a top "rock star", it matters if you have an employee how knows how to respect
their job and their co–workers. Such situations should not be tolerated by anyone and the supervisor should be held accountable to protect their
employees.

  • 4. Workplace Bullying In The Workplace Introduction As a new gradate nurses enters the working field they hear the terms "fresh meat" or "the old eat their young". Feeling like you don't have enough clinical experience can cause uncertainty and anxiety. But hearing the stories about workplace bullying and intimidation can cause a feeling of intimidation. "Bullying involves a real or perceived imbalance of power and repetition of the negative behavior" (Gumbus A., Lyons B. 2012) There are different types of behaviors, such as threating or yelling, it can be more insidious and passive, like refusing to cooperate or perform necessary tasks. Bullying is a serious issue, it's an ongoing problem in the healthcare workplace. Bullying causes demoralization of the victim and decreased job satisfaction, as well as the individual feeling sadness, anxiety, depression and isolation. This disruptive behavior can foster medical errors which can lead to harm of the patients. Nurse bullying is also costly for healthcare employers. It often results in increased turnover when nurses who are bullied choose to quit their jobs rather than remain in a work environment that makes them miserable. Factors influencing workplace bullying Given the negative consequences of workplace bullying on the mental health and well–being of employees and the performance of any organization, it is important to understand the reasons that trigger the development of this social phenomenon. Customers, as stakeholders, are impacted by workplace bullying. Turnover, low engagement, and low morale can impact the services they receive or the quality of the products that they are purchasing. • 6. Bullying In The Workplace Workplace bullying is a concern for many stakeholders such as nurses, doctors, healthcare employers, patients, families, The Joint Commission, Occupation Safety and Health Association (OSHA), national– level Nurse and Medical professional associations, and state–level affiliated nursing associations. Defining and analyzing the problem is the first step in addressing it. In the past, workplace bullying was referred to as "Nurses eating their young." There are many names for the various levels of workplace bullying like horizontal and lateral violence, hostility, mobbing, and verbal abuse. Bullying actions can take place overtly or covertly. The strength of the evidence for workplace bullying strategies is well passed the emerging stage but has not quite achieved the unequivocal stage. The tools such as state regulations, federal workplace safety policies, and professional nursing association recommendations provide important impetus and support for nurses and hospitals undertaking this transformation. They represent the basis for program development but they fall short of clearly defining the insidiousness of workplace bullying much less restricting the damage it causes. Bullying interventions should be on equal footing with sexual harassment and racial discrimination laws in terms of enforcement. Currently employers do not adequately address workplace bullying as a phenomenal cost to their organization and to the good employees. • 7. The Prevalence And Effect Of Workplace Workplace bullying is a significant but complex issue that presents challenges for a large portion of Australian firms. Depicted as a form of psychological violence, there have been continuous cases resulting in serious mental injury or even death. Accordingly over the past decade, research against workplace bullying has rapidly increased internationally including Australia. Since its first study in the UK, following studies agree on the fact that workplace bullying has become a hazard affecting people in their daily work–life. Special attention is required as it is not a matter exclusive to a certain region or industry. It found that 6.8 percent of Australian workers have been bullied at work six months prior to being surveyed, with more than half experiencing bullying for longer than six months period. (Dollard 2012) Also, the news article on 'the human cost of workplace bullying' claimed that such conditions were costing Australian economy between 6 to 36billion dollars a year. The major reasons pinpointed were the reduced productivity, increase in number of absenteeism and turnover. In addition to its impact on economy, workplace bullying has a devastating effect on the individual employees. Bullying can bring significant damage to the victim's wellbeing, which in extreme cases leads to suicide. Regarding a research conducted by Toni Mellington, an Australian health psychologist, there is a direct negative relationship between bullying and health. (Gregor 2015) Employees who claimed to have been bullied reported poorer health, with an increase in severity of bullying increasing the chance of poorer health. The finding also suggested that the experience of merely witnessing bullying can also have a negative impact on one's health, backing up the fact that bullying affects not only the individual but the entire firm. The eye–catching studies above urge a prompt reaction towards resolving workplace bullying. Currently everyone at workplace is potentially at the risk of being bullied. • 8. Workplace Harassment In The Workplace The workplace has an environment where people having different communication styles, personalities and views come to interact. These differences play a significant role in sourcing these workplace issues. These factors can ultimately lead to tension and stress at workplace for people who are involved. Even though, all colleagues have all the rights for fair treatment and they should feel safe in their workplace, some employees are bullied harassed or discriminated. Specifically, people, who belong to LGBT community, are unsafe in their workplaces by non–discriminatory policies. Moreover, few of the employees might feel dissatisfied with their performance and these people have to struggle in order to perform at their workplace. These people also face the difficulty in finding a suitable job that matches their abilities and interests (Hershcovis 499–519) Employee mistreatment problem can result in low job performance, less productivity, termination of work, increased dissatisfaction, anxiety, stress and other mental problems. Workplace harassment can also result on other legal problems. APA notes that insecurity in job and lack of moral support at workplace may lead to exacerbated workplace problems. • 9. Bullying In The Workplace Introduction Workplace bullying has received growing attention over the past decade in regard to organizational research. Researchers are continually conducting studies exposing the negative consequences of workplace bullying at the level of the individual as well as the organization. For example, people that experience workplace bullying are more likely to call in sick, take unpaid vacation days, leave work early and not stay late when needed, misuse company resources, and are less likely to go above and beyond the call of duty in the workplace (Sperry, 2009). This is detrimental to an organization because it is associated with decreased productivity as well as less overall morale from employees. Similarly, victims of workplace bullying are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In general, organizations that are more bureaucratic tend to have higher instances of workplace bullying (O'Moore, Seigne, McGuire, & Smith, 1998). Similarly, work environments with a culture of bullying tend to only make things worse for victims. For example, high stress businesses such as law firms exhibit high levels of workplace bullying ("Workplace Bullying Institute – WBI – Help, Education, Research," 2014). These environments also create an "earn–your–keep" culture, which not only encourages bullies to engage in negative acts, it also suggests that this behavior is necessary to prove oneself at work. A dissatisfying work environment can also perpetuate workplace bullying. Einarsen et al. (1994) and Vartia (1996) found strong correlations between the prevalence of workplace bullying and dissatisfaction with the social climate in a workplace. • 10. Importance Of Workplace Democracy In The Workplace As Mahatma Ghandi once said: "I understand democracy as something that gives the weak the same chance as the strong". A strong public demand, in the past two decades, for greater democracy and employees' participation has been growing and management is being put under pressure to meet this demand in all sectors (Foley and Polanyi, 2006). In all political theories, one idea is never changing, democracy isn't only the democracy of the state institutions but it includes all organizations and enterprises of the society. The concept ofworkplace democracy was forgotten or actually neglected for so many years that now it is being revived again especially with Theresa May's speech. If we want to define workplace democracy in a very general way, it is the association of democratic policies and practices in the workplace. It is a way to realize self–actualization, reach individual autonomy and freedom and it is the root of motivation to claim rights and participatory decision–making (Pausch, 2013). For the liberal thinking, it constitutes of having a set of institutions and representatives that express and aggregate the voice of individual citizens. It is based on a majority rule. Individuals should, to a greater extent, be able to take control over their decisions and their workplace conditions that affect their life. For democracy to be 'a way of life' at work, transparency is the first rule that should be applied as well as economic power. Employee participation in all ways ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Workplace Bullying In The Workplace The situational conflict that our group chose exemplified workplace bullying among the nursing staff in a Hospice facility. In the intraprofessional conflict scenario by "Wineland_Anette Discussion 5.1 (2017)," a nurse was targeted by a fellow coworker who was overwhelmed with high levels of stress and resorted to bullying as an outlet. Aggressive behavior in the workplace damages professional relationships, impairs patient and employee satisfaction, increases employee injuries and illnesses, and reduces quality of patient care (Houck & Colbert, 2016). As complexity leaders, our team seeks to make suggestions for resolution using evidence–based research for appropriate methods of conflict analysis, mediation, and negotiation. Conflict Analysis Conflict analysis is vital for the complexity leader to gain insight into issues of conflict to avoid damage to the victim, the workplace environment, other staff members, and patients (McKibben, 2017). Conflict analysis allows nurse leaders to distinguish between perceived conflict and the presence of actual conflict (McKibben, 2017). In this scenario, one nurse's exposure to a stressful, end–of–life position creates frustration which is then conceptualized by another nurse as being bullied (Crowell, 2016). The complexity leader takes steps to resolve the conflict by engaging in crucial conversations (Crowell, 2016) to clarify and examine different points of view about the situation (Folse, 2015). Additionally, the complexity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Toxicity in the Workplace The Toxic Workplace Organizational Behaviour Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the inter –relationship of incivility and toxicity, how bullies are able to become toxic managers, and how they are allowed to develop in a toxic organization. We also analyze the development of organizational pain and how toxin handlers deal it with. Finally, we hope to assess if there is any validity to claims that 'Generation Z' is responsible for the recent prevalence of workplace toxicity. What is a toxic workplace? A relatively new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without the use of a "Toxin Handler" to ameliorate the emotional pain, workplace toxicity affects the bottom line of an organization through lost productivity from distraction, debilitating health issues, and attrition (Scholten). Workplace Incivility: "I don't have time to be nice." Unlike aggressive, violent, and abusive workplaces, where the intent to cause harm is apparent, incivility takes on more ambiguous forms, where the perceptions of the instigator, target, and observer(s), must factor together to determine intent (Andersson, 1999). General incivility, as a primary precursor to a toxic workplace, can be described as rude behavior, or a disregard for others within the organization, stemming from a lack of recognition, or ignorance, of co–workers emotions and values, often taking form in deviance as a protest of dissatisfaction (Kelloway, 2010), and leads to a downward spiral of malcontent. Pearson classifies Incivility as "Low–intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm" stemming from "Anti–social behavior in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect".Despite the intent, or lack thereof, the effects of incivility in the workplace are strictly damaging, and as such, must be addressed before spiraling out of control. Examples of workplace incivility include ignoring advice and belittling ideas, lack of active listening, taking credit for shared work and public criticism or insults (Johnson, 2001). Psychopaths In The Workplace Essay Since there has been a rise in unfavorable treatment incidents when corporate psychopaths are in the workplace, it has also caused an increase in negative effects for organizations. Such negative effects include an increase in bullying (Boddy, 2014), counterproductive work behavior, harassment, employee absenteeism and healthcare costs for organizations by these individuals that display these toxic behaviors. Consequentially, even though there is an increase in these toxic and counterproductive behaviors in the workplace, there have not been solutions established to determine how to prevent these behaviors. The positive consequence for conducting this study is to explore ways to avoid recruiting these individuals and explore ways employees can manage these incidents when they occur in the workplace. (Workplace Bullying Institute, 2014). The institute has helped through thousands of interviews to confirm what types of employees bullies usually target. The bully usually focuses on skilled employees that have the ability to be successful and who are usually brighter than the bullies. When you put business before your employees, you can create problems that you may not even think about. Wallner is probably one of the most unethical people I have heard of. If you were to pay off an individual in certain workplaces at certain companies right now, there would be so many lawsuits that we wouldn't be able to keep up. Even to mention to an employee that you would pay them off can cause a lawsuit. If anyone were to ask me that question I would leave the company because that sexual harassment will probably happen to me again, let alone my supervisor clearly doesn't care about my safety. You can't buy off employee silence; it is unethical and simply wrong. Not only is this company making a terrible name for itself, but also it is giving their employee's a dangerous and careless work environment. The employer is liable if it knew or should have known about the harassment, unless it took immediate and appropriate corrective action (Workplace Fairness). Not only is Wallner putting his employee's at risk, but himself as well. It doesn't matter if you have a top "rock star", it matters if you have an employee how knows how to respect their job and their co–workers. Such situations should not be tolerated by anyone and the supervisor should be held accountable to protect their employees. Workplace Fairness. (2016). Sexual harassment – legal standards.
