An Essay On Sleepwalking
TREATMENT OF SLEEPWALKING The exact cause of sleepwalking is unknown but it believe it
is because of inheritance. If one of your family members has or had sleepwalking behaviour you are
more prone to inherit it. Sleepwalking is very common among children and treatment is usually not
necessary because it typically goes away by the teen years. If sleepwalking is caused by underlying
medical condition like restless legs syndrome, sleepwalking will automatically stopped once the
underlying medical condition is treated. For certain cases treatment is needed if it caused injury,
discomfort or embarrassment. 1) Scheduled awakening For children who sleepwalk very often and
cause injury, you can try the treatment method called scheduled awakening. ... Show more content

Ricksgers shot his wife in the posterior part of her body to death, by using the gun that his wife used
to keep under her pillow in bed when he was sleeping. The lawyer who was defending for Ricksgers
claimed that there was deficiency of oxygen supplied to his brain. It led him to behave abnormally
and carry out involuntary actions such as murdering his wife. Nevertheless, the Assistant District
Attorney claimed that Ricksgers actually killed his wife intentionally. It was because the authorities
found a goodbye note from victim's purse as well as a 1988 receipt for a divorce. She told one of her
friends that she had planned to leave her husband day after Christmas. One of the relatives told the
policeman that Mr Ricksgers abuse their five–year–old child. All in all, Ricksgers was convicted on
first–degree murder although he seemed to have no intention to kill his wife. Reference link :

Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking Scene Essay
Doctor
Background: In the beginning of Act five Scene one, the doctor and the gentlewoman are conversing
about Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking condition when Lady Macbeth appears. Her eyes open wide,
she enters the stage holding a candle to brighten her path. She repeatedly rubs her hands together in
the air in a feverish washing motion. She appears to be engaged in a conversation with Macbeth on
the matter of how her hands can be cleaned with only a small amount of water. She continues for a
while before returning to her chamber.
[The doctor goes back to his bedroom and stops, closing the door behind him. Letting out a big sigh,
he looks into the audience]

How Is Lady Macbeth Unethical
In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is infamous for her commandeering nature and
unapologetic attitude. She serves as the driving force behind her husband, Macbeth's murdering of
King Duncan so that they may obtain the Scottish throne. On the surface, Lady Macbeth holds
herself in high regard, and appears to society as a dutiful and subordinate wife to Macbeth.
However, behind closed doors she is capable of manipulating him. After King Duncan has been
murdered, Lady Macbeth maintains her composure as peers begin to suspect Macbeth of the crime,
and impending consequences threaten the well being of the couple. She keeps calm until one night
she sleepwalks and is observed by bystanders expressing her guilt over the crimes she has
committed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anticipating Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, a gentlewoman and a doctor wait for her to leave her
room in the middle of the night. Sure enough, she emerges from her room, fully asleep and
mimicking the action of washing her hands. She proceeds to scream about a stain on her hands, "Yet
here's a spot" and continues, "Out, damned spot! Out, I say!" (Shakespeare 5.1.27, 30). Though there
is no physical blood on her hands, she is dreaming that she is covered in the blood of the main she
plotted the murder of: King Duncan. It is evident that her guilt has invaded her peaceful dream
realm in the way that she frantically is wringing her hands, and shouting for it to disappear. The
hallucination of the blood complicates Lady Macbeth's guilt because regardless of the fact that
Macbeth did the true killing of Duncan, she feels equally as responsible, hence the bloody hands.
The presence of the bystanders during Lady Macbeth's most vulnerable moment serves to show that
she has lost all regard for acting with comportment in public. Even though she is not consciously
aware of her whereabouts, her body has definitively made the decision that it is time to come clean
for her. Her body leaving the confines of her bed to discuss her crimes in front of other people is a
way of her subconscious mind telling her the guilt is too much for her to

Sleeping Disorders
Sleeping Disorders Sleeping disorders may seem minor, but many can cause severe health damage.
These health damages vary within each type of sleeping disorder. On an average, people will spend
25 years sleeping and it is astounding how little people know about what goes on after they turn the
lights off and lay their heads down; sleep can help people strengthen memories, improve physical
performance, and become faster learners. There are many different types of sleeping disorders,
including Insomnia which is the inability to fall asleep. Sleep Apnea is another sleeping disorder that
interrupts breathing during sleep and causes an increased risk of heart disease. This sleeping
disorder causes people to wake up as many as 100 times a night. ... Show more content on

is often repeated every 20–40 seconds, and the range of people over 60 that have PLMS is 64%.
Remedy's of Health Communities stated, "PLMD is a common sleep disorder, especially in the
elderly" (Stanley J. Swierzewski). Since these movements at night tend to wake people up at night,
PLMD usually causes patients to have daytime drowsiness. Most people that have this sleeping
disorder are unaware of it unless someone is asleep with them in the same bed. Cases of PLMD
have been treated with sleeping pills that have also been helpful for treating the movement disorder
of Parkinson's disease. Overall, PLMD is a very intricate sleeping disorder with aspects that can

Sleepwalking Leg Syndrome
Sleep problems can range from mild to severe and can be as diverse as walking in your sleep to
coping with restless leg syndrome. It is thought that more than 10 million people suffer from RLS
and over 8.5 million have dealt with walking in their sleep. I am part of both of those statistics. I
will first talk about my experience as a whole with sleepwalking and then restless leg syndrome. I
never thought of sleepwalking as a problem or sleep disorder even tho I did it myself as a child. On
one of my sleepwalking excursions I apparently walked out of my room, through the living room,
down 4 or 5 stairs (with no problem going down or back up), and over to my dad who was still
awake watching television while lying on the couch. That all seemed normal ... Show more content

I have not had a sleepwalking episode since I was 19 years old which would concur with what we
now know in that the older we get, our deep NREM–3 sleep becomes less and therefore so does the
sleepwalking. As with sleepwalking I did not know restless leg syndrome was a sleep problem or
disorder. Also as with sleepwalking I started having RLS symptoms when I was a child. I did not
know it was a thing because I was so young when I first had the symptoms and I don't recall even
telling my parents there was a problem. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my fourth child that I
remember it happening again with any kind of regularity. But after this go around of feeling the
same painful irritating symptoms in my legs I was able to look it up on the internet and voila!
Restless leg syndrome.
I am glad to know what it is but as with sleepwalking there isn't a so called cure, only things you
could do to manage the symptoms. There isn't even actually a test to be taken to determine if you
have RLS, only certain criteria to be met.It is an annoying hurtful sensation

Sleepwalking Disorder
Sleepwalking is a serious sleeping disorder that affects a lot of people in the world. It is also known
as somnambulism. Sleep walking is a behavior disorder that happens when in a deep sleep. It is
more common in children than adults. It is more likely to happen when someone is sleep deprived. A
sleepwalker sleeps through the whole episode. It might be hard for the sleepwalker to awaken and
probably will not remember the episode at all. More than just walking typically occurs during an
episode of sleepwalking. Some of these actions include simple things such as sitting up in bed and
looking around to more complex actions such as getting up and leaving the house and driving
somewhere. Some of these actions can be harmless, inappropriate, or ... Show more content on

Sleep apnea is when your breathing is affected while you sleep. The most common of sleep apnea is
when the person stops breathing for short periods of time. This type of sleep apnea is called
obstructive sleep apnea. This happens when that soft tissue in the back of the throat relaxes while
sleeping and the tissue blocks the airway. Sleep apnea is more common in men rather than women,
mostly in African–American and Hispanic. Breathing pauses normally last for about 10–20 seconds
and can occur hundreds of times each night. This also makes people snore. Some major signs and
symptoms of sleep apnea are snoring, choking, and gasping for air all during sleep. Less major signs
are morning headaches, memory or learning problems, feeling tired or depressed, or waking up
frequently. People with sleep apnea have a few options to help cure or somewhat get rid of their
sleep apnea. There is a machine called a CPAP (continuous positive airflow pressure), it is a mask
that you wear while sleeping. A CPAP provides a constant stream of air to keep you breathing while
you are asleep. ("Sleep Apnea") There are many other choices to help with sleep apnea but the CPAP
is the most common of all of them. Sleep apnea is as common as type 2 diabetes. There are more
than 18 million people who are affected by sleep apnea. Risk factors include being male,
overweight, and being

Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking Quotes
1. Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking reveals that her conscience is filled with the guilt of the murders.
She is seen washing her husband repeatedly and although she tries to wash out a certain spot, it
never seems to leave her hand. This washing of her hands is symbolic of her trying to wash away
her guilt, similar to earlier in the play when Macbeth tells her that nothing can wash away the sin his
hands had committed. The Doctor and Gentlewoman, knowing that her sleepwalking is
representative of something secretive and wrong, decide to not tell anyone about it. The quote, "foul
whisp'rings are abroad. Unnatural deeds/Do breed unnatural troubles. Infected minds/To their deaf
pillows will discharge their minds," (Shakespeare, 165) shows that the Doctor has a profound24
understanding of what Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking might indicate. Lady Macbeth's contrite25
state of mind will play a much greater role by the end of the play when she kills herself because she
is overcome with it.

Lady Macbeth's hand washing is symbolic her trying to wash away her sins and remorse. In the
quote, "Out, damned spot, out, I say! One. Two. Why then, 'tis time to do 't. Hell is murky. Fie, my
lord, fie, a soldier and afeard?" (Shakespeare, 163) Lady Macbeth is trying to remove the "spot" on
her hand because it is a piece of evidence of her evil deeds. She is behaving much the same way
Macbeth behaved after he had killed Duncan. She is paranoid, restless and repentant. The sins her
and Macbeth have committed have depleted26 her peaceful state of mind. Macbeth's reaction and
hers are very similar. However, after Macbeth had killed Duncan, Lady Macbeth was annoyed that
he had been so weak to let it get to him. This shows how Lady Macbeth's character has developed

Sleep Deprivation, Nightmares, And Sleepwalking

Night Terrors, Nightmares, and Sleepwalking
At night, you lock the house down, tuck the kids into bed, clean your home, and you might even
finish some last minute work. I bet you never thought about the things that can happen at night. As
we kiss our children goodnight, our favorite line is "Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs
bite". You never thought about your son sleepwalking through the night or even your daughter
screaming out her sleep. What about your twins, who are both, having nightmares! Let us think
about one more thing, did you even know that this could happen to anyone at any age, even you.
Many Americans around the world lack the knowledge of realizing how important sleep really is.
The lack of sleep can cause short–term and long–term health problems. Night terrors, nightmares,
and sleepwalking are all cases that fall into sleep disorders called parasomnias. Parasomnias are
disruptive sleep disorders that can occur during arousal from either rapid eye movement or even
non–rapid eye movement. Children from the age's four to twelve of ages experience night terrors.
Considering, less is associated with adolescents and youngsters who are dealing with insomnia,
which is the inability to fall asleep, is effected by twenty–five percent. Therefore, when one does fall
to sleep a frequent awakening may occur. However, obstructive sleep apnea is just the opposite in

pursuing the idea of who the killer was but rather questioning the state of mentality of the
protagonist. Throughout the short story, Brown manages to invent a suspenseful tone that intrigues
the reader through the idea of psychoanalysis and the constant questioning of Althorpe character as a
whole. In the short story that explains itself, Somnambulism is described to correlate sleepwalking

In Althorpe dreams he believes he is protecting Constnaie from an assassin set out to kill her and
defends her by killing it. The way he describes it would only lead the readers to the conclusion that
he actually commited the murder. "I was summoned, methought, to defend this lady from the attacks
of an assassin. My ideas were full of confusion and inaccuracy. All that I can recollect is, that my
efforts had been unsuccessful to avert the stroke of the murderer. This, however, was not
accomplished without drawing on his head a bloody retribution. I imagined myself engaged, for a
long time, in pursuit of the guilty, and, at last, to have detected him in an artful disguise. I did not
employ the usual preliminaries which honour prescribes, but, stimulated by rage, attacked him with
a pistol, and terminated his career by a mortal wound." (Brown Pg–7) Viewing his dream from a
psych–analysis standpoint, you can understand that Althorpe is trying to interpret him killing
Constanie Davis in a more fictional event for him to believe. However, when he wakes up he seems
to deflect the dream and make it into just a "dream." This manipulation inside his head lets the

The Effects Of Sleepwalking On The Nervous System
Dennis Powell Professor Key Psy2012 1 December 2015 Have you ever known anyone who has
sleepwalked? Perhaps, if you lived with young children, then you may have witnessed an act of
sleeping or somnambulism. The characteristics of this parasomnia are simplistic in theory; a person
who is a asleep appears to be awake and is performing activities without any knowledge once they
awaken. Sleepwalking is common in adolescence due to hormonal changes, but can occur
throughout an individual 's life. When present in adults it can indicate many more serious
psychological issues underlying, for the majority sleepwalking is benign and is grown out of. Some
factors that are thought to cause this disorder are: fatigue, fever, which directly affects the nervous
system, general illness, stress, or sleep deprivation, although none show definite connection to the
illness. Sleepwalking , formally known as somnambulism, is a behavior disorder that originates
during deep slumber and results in ambulating or performing other in–volute comportment while
asleep. It is much more mundane in children than adults and is more liable to occur if a person is
slumber deprived. Because a sleepwalker typically remains in deep slumber throughout the episode,
he or she may be arduous to arouse and will probably not recollect the sleepwalking incident. This
can be categorized under several distinct sleep–wake disorders and is incorporated in almost all
books used by modern psychologists. An episode can last

Patrick Stump's Song 'Sleepwalking'
I've heard thousands of song that people published. Some are good, some are not so good. Every
once in a while, there are songs that gives me a spark of feeling. "This City" by Patrick Stump and
"Sleepwalking" by The Chain Gang of 1974 are one of them. The song "This City", sings about how
Patrick loves his city and that he would stay there for life. The song "Sleepwalking" sings about a
man who got his heart broke and he thinks it's all a dream. "This City" reminds me of a time I
moved to a different state and "Sleepwalking" reminds me of a time I got my heart broken. It started
on a beautiful fall day. The leaves were picturesque and the air was crisp. Travelling from Hyndman,
Pennsylvania, to West Virginia was a long trip. My family and I took the interstate 68. It was about a
two–hour drive and at the time, I had a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's not in a bad way, but more of a good way. The instruments in the song gives me a feeling of
hope and inspiration. "This city is my city and I love it. Yeah, I love it. I was born and raised here. I
got it made here and if I had my way I would stay here for life." Those lyrics are what makes it
comforting. Every day I would play that song. I would never get tired of hearing it. It's something
about it, mostly the instruments, that keeps me drawn in. My mother ask me all the time if I ever get
tired of hearing it. My answer is the same every time.
There is another song that I like it's called "Sleepwalking" by The Chain Gang of 1974. It's another
song that starts off with an inspiration melody. I can't explain the feeling I get when I hear this song.
It feels like I am on another spiritual level. It reminds me of my spiritual development after a terrible
break up. I ignore all the bad memory's that comes with this song and only focus on the good ones.

Essay on Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder effecting an estimated 10 percent of all humans at least once in
their lives (1). This widespread phenomenon varies in its intensity and frequency. While most
sleepwalking incidents are short and not dangerous, some can involve self–injury and are much
more dangerous for the sleeper. Also, most interestingly, the disorder seems to stem from many
different sources, not from one definable cause such as a chemical imbalance. While it is
predominantly pre–adolescents who suffer from somnambulism, it is also observed in adults,
although the frequency and severity of incidents increase with age. The source of the disorder was
once thought to be entirely psychological and an extension of ... Show more content on

Sleepwalking most often occurs at a certain point in the sleep "architecture" (6).This is the point
where the sleeper's brain waves have become larger and he or she has moved into deeper sleep. This
is not REM sleep, but deep non–REM sleep. The series of complex behaviors characterizing
somnambulism includes "amnesia following an episode," and "difficulty in arousing the patient
during an episode" (9). The patient can also have other REM disorders or psychiatric and medical
disorders which do not account for the sleepwalking. While sleepwalking, the patients' brainwaves
show a mixture of types of brainwave patterns, including ones similar to those observed in waking
patients, as well as those found in deep sleep. It is the "awake" patterns which match the waking
behaviors like walking and talking while the patient is still asleep enough so that he or she is not
aware of what it happening and is not forming memories of their actions (3).
The difference between older people's sleepwalking and that of children may be related to the sleep
pattern changes a person undergoes as he grows older. Children spend more time in deep sleep (the
stage during which sleepwalking is initiated) and as one becomes older, sleep is more fragmented,
with more time spent in light sleep. The physiological aspects of sleepwalking

How Is Sleepwalking A Valid Defense For Murder?
Sleepwalking can be very dangerous for the people sleeping and the people around them. There
have been several cases of murder while sleepwalking that have gone to trial according to
Murderous Dreams. Let us discuss whether sleepwalking is a valid defense for murder.
I think sleepwalking could be a defense for murder in certain circumstances. Like a long history of
the illness. Crimes like breaking and entering, trespassing or even robbery could also use a
sleepwalking defense. Say the patient that sleepwalks was angry going to bed that anger came out
on someone else in a sleepwalking incident that person could press charges for assault. If the
defense proved the patient was sleepwalking, I would see that as a valid defense.

Babies and children spend most of their time in this stage, but as we grow older we spend less time
in REM. (Blackman, 2000) * Non–REM sleep Non–REM sleep is a much deeper, more restful kind
of sleep. In non–REM sleep, the person's body is free to move around. Non–REM dreams are more
likely to consist of brief, fragmentary impressions that are less emotional and less likely to involve
visual images than REM sleep dreams and are more frequently forgotten. The period of Non–REM
sleep is made up of four stages. Each stage can last from 5 to 15 minutes. A completed cycle of sleep
consists of a progression from stages 1–4 before REM sleep is attained, then the cycle starts over
again. People begin the sleep cycle with a period of non–REM sleep followed by a very short period
of REM sleep (Chang, 2010). A machine called an electroencephalograph (EEG) allows scientists to
see the brain wave activity as a person passes through the various stages of sleep to determine what
type of sleep the person has entered ( Aserinsky & Kleitman, 1953). A person who is wide
awake and mentally active will show a brain wave pattern on the EEG called beta waves. Beta
waves are small and fast. As the person relaxes and gets drowsy, slightly larger and slower alpha
waves appear. The alpha waves are eventually replaced by even slower and larger theta waves. Non–

Blood As An Image In Macbeth Essay
Shakespeare uses the symbol of blood in MacBeth to represent treason, guilt, murder and death.
These ideas are constant throughout the book. There are many examples of blood representing these
three ideas in the book.
Blood is mentioned throughout the play and mainly in reference to murder or treason. The first
reference to blood is in MacBeth's soliloquy in Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 33–61, when Macbeth sees the
bloody dagger floating in the air before him. Also in this soliloquy on line 46 he sees "on thy
blade and dudgeon gouts of blood", this means that there is blood on the handle and spots of
blood on the handle. This is implying that the dagger was viciously and maliciously used on
someone. Shakespeare most likely put this in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, blood is being used to describe treason, murder and death.
Act 5, Scene 1 is the famous sleepwalking scene. While Lady MacBeth is sleepwalking she makes
many references to the evil deeds that Macbeth and herself have committed, most of which include
references to blood. In Act 5, Scene 1, Line 31, She goes through the motions of washing her hands
saying "Out damned spot! Out, I say" in reference to the blood that stained her hands
after smearing it all over the servants after assisting MacBeth in the treasonous murder of MacBeth.
This also represents her guilt of the murder. In Act 5, Scene 1, Line 38 she makes another reference
to the guilt saying, "What, will these hands ne'er be clean?" The last reference she
makes to the blood being on her hands representing her guilt is in Act 5, Scene 1, Lines 44–45,
"Here's the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this
hand." All these references are to murder, death, treason, and guilt.
Throughout the play, Shakespeare effectively conveys theme of death, murder, treason, and guilt
through the symbol of blood. Normally, the word blood makes us think about injury and being an
essential part of life. The symbol of blood was

Sleepwalking
Somnambulism, or sleepwalking, belongs to a group of parasomnias. This disorder of arousal is
characterized by complex motor behaviors initiated during stages 3 and 4 of non–rapid–eye–
movement (NREM) sleep (slow–wave sleep) (3). Behaviors during sleepwalking episodes can vary

more complex behaviors such as walking, driving a car, or preparing a meal (2). After awakening,

This stage is believed to help people enter deeper stages of sleep (4). Stage 3 sleep consists of 20–50
percent delta activity and stage 4 sleep of more than 50 percents delta activity (4). Stages 3 and 4 are
characterized as being slow wave sleep in addition to being the deepest levels of sleep.
Approximately 90 minutes after being asleep, people enter rapid–eye–movement (REM) sleep (4).
REM sleep consists of rapid eye movements, a desynchronized EEG, sensitivity to external
stimulation, muscle paralysis and dreaming (4).
Sleepwalking occurs during stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle, the deepest levels of sleep. This slow–
wave sleep is normally characterized by synchronized EEG activity (4). This indicates that mental
activity is very low during these stages of sleep. However researchers have shown that the EEG of a
sleepwalker has diffuse, rhythmic, high–voltage bursts of delta activity associated with abrupt motor
activity (1). This is very different from the EEG activity normally associated with slow–wave sleep.
In addition to the EEG results, they found that there is a decrease in regional cerebral blood flow in
the frontopariental cortices during sleepwalking (1). This indicates that sleepwalking is a dissociated
state consisting of motor arousal and persisting mind sleep, which seems to arise from the selective
activation of thalamocingulate circuits and the persisting inhibition of other thalamocortical arousal
systems (3).

Sleepwalking In Macbeth
Shakespeare's Macbeth features a protagonist who is lured from the security of moral behavior by an
opportunity for ultimate power. The titular character, Macbeth, begins as a valiant military hero
renowned for his courage, but his moral conscience is lead askew when three witches present to him
a prophecy predicting his ascent to the throne. In order to satisfy this prophecy, Macbeth murders
the reigning king Duncan. The bloodshed combined with Macbeth's illegitimate reign result in
chronic sleeplessness and increasing paranoia which ultimately leads to his downfall. His wife, the
mastermind behind the assassination scheme, is not exempt as she is subjected to bouts of
sleepwalking. Shakespeare uses disrupted sleep as a punishment for the ... Show more content on

Upon first observing her sleepwalking, the Doctor remarks that it is a "A great perturbation in
nature, to receive at/ once the benefit of sleep and do the effects of/ watching" (5.1.10–12). This
unnatural behavior serves as punishment for Lady Macbeth's plotting, as it was a clear violation of
moral principles. She has begun sleepwalking because she supported murder for no reason other
than indulging her ruthless ambition. During the same sleepwalking scene, Lady Macbeth also calls
herself "To bed, to bed" (5.1.69) and further declares that "what's done cannot be undone.–To bed,
to/ bed, to bed!" (5.1.71–72). Here, she directly contradicts what she said to Macbeth earlier in Act
II following Duncan's assassination, showing her remorse over Duncan's murder at the hands of her
husband. Her regret indicates the loss of her former resolution to go through with her plan and thus a
change in her mentality. The Doctor even addresses the dubious nature of her behavior, commenting
that "Unnatural deeds/ Do breed unnatural troubles. Infected minds/ To their deaf pillows will
discharge their secrets." (5.1.75–77). More than anything physical, Lady Macbeth is suffering from
a mental affliction that is caused by grief over her former actions. Eventually, her compunction
drives her into committing suicide. As with Macbeth, if she had better judgement and acted more
righteously, she would have avoided her unfortunate fate. Through this, it becomes evident that the
offender is the one who suffers the most after committing evil actions, as they ultimately lose their

Essay On Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking, formally known as somnambulism, is a behavior disorder that originates during deep
sleep and results in walking or performing other complex behaviors while asleep (Siclari). It usually
occurs when a person is transitioning from a deep stage of sleep to a lighter stage of sleep, or as they
are awakening. Because a sleepwalker is neither awake nor aware during an episode, he or she
cannot respond during the event and may not remember the incident afterwards. The disorder is
diagnosed mostly in children between the ages of four and eight, but it also occurs in adults. In fact,
each year, about 8.4 million U.S. adults sleepwalk; that is 3.6 percent of people in the United States
(Popat). Research has found that sleepwalking is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, there is no law in existence that provides a set of determined actions for when someone
commits a crime or acts out in an aggressive way while asleep. Therefore, parasomnias that result in
illegal activity – specifically violence – create a grey area within the justice system: should those
who commit crimes and/or violence while sleepwalking be persecuted for their actions? In the legal
case of Mr. A, he was not found guilty for his wife's homicide with a defense of sleepwalking which
many people did not agree with. Nine months before his wife was killed, Mr. A began dealing with
high stress caused by his job. He was assigned to be project manager of a new product that he
believed was going to fail from the start. He continued to work hard and put in long hours in his
office. He feared that he would be held responsible for a failure that would cost the company
millions of dollars and cause his team members to lose their jobs. As a result, he went to bed late
and reported feeling extremely exhausted and depressed. He began using caffeine tablets to stay
awake while on the job, leading to a sporadic sleep schedule consisting of two to four late nights of
short and poor quality sleep followed by a night of going to bed early to catch up on sleep
(Cartwright). The day of the homicide, Mr. A got home from work and had dinner with his wife and
children. His wife asked him to check

Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene, in Shakespeare's Macbeth, conveys the toll of her deeds on her

Through the use dialogue and imagery, Lady Macbeth demonstrates how ambition can lead

revealing a future of becoming king, Lady Macbeth wants to speed up the process. She realises

Sleepwalking Through History Summary
Haynes Johnson's, Sleepwalking through History: America in the Reagan Years, is a secondary
source published in 1991 that is a Revisionist vision of the era of the Reagan Administration. It also
criticizes the employment of "Reaganomics". Johnson was an extremely well–known journalist for
the Washington Post. The origin has value because Johnson won a Pulitzer Prize and worked for the
same newspaper for four decades. His focus was on presidencies and major beliefs or events such as
McCarthyism. He was educated with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and a
master's in American history from the University of Wisconsin. However, he served in the Korean
War, so his opinion may be limited as the Cold War was taking place during the Reagan
Administration. Johnson explains that Reaganomics was not as successful as it was originally made
out to be. He creates the argument that "While the American idea of freedom and democracy had

later backed by his statement "Stripped of slogans and magic economic curves, supply–side

Analysis Of Sleepwalking Defense By Lindsay Lyon
After reading Lindsay Lyon's article about "sleepwalking defense", it's clear this is a controversial
pled. The thought of being able to do anything in your sleep is an outrageous concept to grasp, let
alone use as a defense in a court room. Out of seven different cases in this article, there's only two
that I could come to terms with. State v. Bradley and Pennsylvania v. Ricksgers both involved the
murder of their significant others with a single gunshot during an unconscious state. In my opinion,
these cases are most relevant to the sleepwalking defense because it's more believable to think one
action took place before someone waking up then multiple actions. The Regina v. Parks case was a
far stretch to try and use sleepwalking defense.

My personal view is that a person with sleepsex disorder should wear an alarm bracelet to bed so
that others can be notified when they get out of bed. I believe doctors and scientist should try and
find what causes these behaviors in human during sleep and find a cure for this disturbing behavior.
Sleep walking is a very common behavior and it is more talk about than sleepsex. Sleep walking use
to be fun for me to watch because I had a smaller brother who usually sleep walk around the house.
For example he gets off the bed and pulls out a shoe from under the bed and pee in it or he would
open the door and go out on the verandah and began to pee over the balcony. My other brothers,
sisters and I would laugh uncontrollable; but we always make sure he doesn't heart himself when we
are up and he is having an episode of sleepwalking. My Dad and Mom were very careful not to let
any harmful object laying around at night, Dad also put a dead bolt on the top of the doors so he
could not get out of the house at night. I also believe that sleepwalking can be very dangerous to that
person and who they come in contact with. Most people do not like to be disturbed during

I do believe that neuroscience can have a role in the criminal justice system. By reading some
scenarios from a website, this has brought me to my answer on why I agree that it does. Let me
share a story from the reading:
"In 1981 in Scottsdale, Arizona, Steven Steinberg murdered his wife in the middle of the night,
driving a kitchen knife into her body 26 times. In court, Steinberg admitted to killing his wife, but
pled not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Steinberg claimed that he was sleeping at the time
of the murder, and did not remember committing the atrocity. The defense argued that the act of
murder was a dissociative reaction, meaning that it was produced by alterations in consciousness
that were beyond Steinberg's control. The jury agreed, and Steinberg walked away a free man.
Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is a phenomenon in which the body is awake and
active but the mind remains asleep. The eyes are open and postural muscles are aroused, but
conscious awareness is still suspended. It occurs during a portion of sleep called non–REM sleep, in
which the muscles are not in the same near–paralysis state as seen during REM sleep. The
dissociation between "body sleep" and "mind sleep" that occurs during sleepwalking results from
the relative activation and deactivation or particular brain regions, research ... Show more content on

"temporary insanity" model to a "guilty but insane" model, in which those found guilty are sent to a
mental institution for as long as a comparable prison sentence (Goldstein,

Examples Of Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking
English playwright, William Shakespeare, begins the final act of his infamous tragedy, Macbeth,
with an interesting and strange image of Lady Macbeth, just before her offstage death occurs.
Shakespeare depicts Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, as light surround her, symbolizing her
recognition of her wrongdoings, and her acceptance of her punishments to come.
The gentlewoman states that Lady Macbeth has risen from her bed signed and sealed a letter, all
while being "in a most fast sleep." These strange acts of Lady Macbeth are once again expressed
through occurrences in nature, as the doctor states that there is a "great perturbation in nature." As
Lady Macbeth is strangely walking during her sleep, symbolizing her own mental happenings,

5:30–6:00 January 28, 2015. Telephone interview Gary is a CEO and leading expert in sleep
disorders. 1) Are there any new technologies that can prevent or treat sleepwalking? I am not aware
of any new technologies that are available to prevent or treat sleepwalking. There are some different
forms of sleepwalking. Sleepwalking occurs in very deep sleep early in the night, and some of it is
disorganized. There are other forms of sleepwalking that are more organized and have a purpose.
For example, sleep eating is a disorder when people get out of bed and consume food during their
sleep. But for all of those various forms of sleepwalking, we do not have any new or novel
technologies that prevent or treat sleepwalking? 2) Is there a treatment for this disorder? Well
sleepwalking is more common in kids and as children age and get into their teen years and
adulthood, it is more common that sleepwalking goes away by itself. So it's kind of self–limiting for
most people but not everyone. For kids and adults who sleepwalk the best thing to do is to gently
guide the sleepwalker back into bed and that is what takes care of it. Very often, they will stay asleep
in bed and that is what takes care of it. So you don't want to startle a sleepwalker and you don't want

Sleepwalking In Macbeth
The sleepwalking scene in 5.1 of Macbeth highlights Lady Macbeth's mental deterioration and
gradual transition from a cold, calculating to a deeply remorseful woman. Firstly, blood is used as a
symbol of guilt throughout the play. In 5.1, the amplification of Lady Macbeth's guilt is exemplified
through the hallucinations of blood on her hands. This is evident when the gentlewoman describes
Lady Macbeth's delirious actions to the doctor and states that, "it is an accustomed action with her,
to seem thus washing her/hands" (5.1, pg. 70). Lady Macbeth's concern is not actually for the
hallucinations she is suffering; rather, her remorse because of having a hand in killing Duncan. The
blood on her hands symbolizes the immense guilt that is consuming her, a feeling that does not
"wash" away ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The permanence of guilt is further highlighted when, in reference to the blood on her hands, Lady
Macbeth states, "out, damned spot! out, I say" (5.1, 70). The use of the word "damned" and the
repetition of "out" reveal her frustration with the fact that her guilt cannot be erased despite her
efforts and that she cannot undo her actions no matter the amount of penitence she shows for her
deeds. This showcases the great turmoil that she is suffering from the guilt of her sins. In addition,
Lady Macbeth describes the scent of blood lingering on her hands: "here's the smell of blood still:
all the perfumes of Arabia/ will not sweeten this little hand" (5.1, 70). Also, this highlights her
descension into madness as her overburdening feeling of guilt has consumed her so tremendously,
that she is hallucinating about the scent of blood. Furthermore, her eventual guilt, as indicated in the
sleepwalking scene, contrasts heavily with her cold and heartless demeanor while assisting her
husband in concealing King Duncan's murder earlier in the play. This contrast is evident when she
states, "A little water clears us of this deed" (2.2, 23) when Macbeth has his hands smeared with
Duncan's

Somnambulism And What Is Transpiring In The Brain
Somnambulism or sleepwalking is a major reason many people wake up with unexplainable bruises
or are wearing an outfit they don't remember putting on. Sleepwalking falls under the wide umbrella
of sleep disorders called parasomnias, or anything that can go amiss during sleep. Although the
category is similar, somnambulism differs from night terrors. Sufferers are not in fact acting out
their dreams but simply moving due to confusion in the central nervous system (Guilleminault,
2006). Many facets go into explaining what sleepwalking actually is and what is transpiring in the
brain. General knowledge about somnambulism is important due to the reality that so many
Americans are affected. Knowledge of this topic should begin with the causes of this sleep disorder,
where and when it occurs, what happens during an episode, the many things that can go wrong, and
what to look for to see if you or someone you know could suffer from sleepwalking.

mental disorder, drugs, alcohol, and even prescription medication. It is important to know there
things because many Americans may be at risk and most of the causes are things we engage in
ourselves. We all take some sort of medication and we all know at least one child who would much

Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene from Act V, Scene I was interpreted very well from both Artus
Scheiner's painting and Michael Lynch's stage adaptation. Lynch's stage adaptation of the play
provides a great sense of connection with Lady Macbeth. The dimmed lights and the darkened stage
gave the scene such an intense and eerie feeling. Scheiner's painting presents Lady Macbeth as scary
with her long black hair that covers most of her face and her mouth wide open. Her being dressed in
white and holding a lit candlestick, brings a bit light to such a dark painting. Although Scheiner's

Lynch's stage interpretation of Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene in Macbeth's Shakespeare

Characterization: Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking/talking. The Doctor has seen this before but has no

is telling us that Lady Macbeth still sees blood on her hands from her involvement in the murder.
Shakespeare wants the audience to see that Lady Macbeth's actions led her to guilty sleepwalking
and rubbing her hands to wash the "bloody" spots away. In this scene, Shakespeare's decision to
make Lady Macbeth sleepwalk makes her look like she subconsciously regrets her part in Duncan's
murder. Lady Macbeth's downfall leads to the theme, "Darkness is Dangerous." Artus Scheiner
illustrates Lady Macbeth as somewhat scary by giving her black long hair that covers most of her
face and her mouth wide open. Lady Macbeth is dressed in white and carrying a candlestick, which

Sleepwalking has always attracted a sense of mystery and suspense.
Has anyone here ever watched someone who was sleepwalking?
I have. I was 13 years old and it was in camp when I watched my friend get out of bed and walk to
the front door of our bunkhouse. I had no idea that she was sleepwalking. I tried whispering her
name but when she didn't turn around, I just figured she hadn't heard me. I called out to her louder

Symptoms of sleepwalking include: * Walking during sleep * Taking in sleep and saying things that
do not make sense * Sitting up and appearing awake during sleep * Opening eyes, having a blank
look during sleep * Performing detailed activity of any type during sleep * Acting confused or
disoriented when they wake up
What are its treatments?
Although there are some drugs that can be prescribed for sleepwalking, most people don't need any
specific treatment for sleepwalking. Many experts just advise on putting away dangerous items and
locking doors and windows before sleep to lower the risk of harmful activity. (This includes moving
objects such as electrical cords or furniture to reduce the chances of tripping and falling. You may
also need to block off stairways with a gate.) Avoiding sleep deprivation and going to sleep the same
time on a regular basis are also recommended.
Some people mistakenly believe that a sleepwalker should not be woken up. It is not dangerous to
awaken a sleepwalker. If you do so, the sleepwalker will only be a little confused and disoriented.
Experts suggest to gently guide the sleepwalker back to bed without waking them.
What can you hope for a sleepwalker?
Sleepwalking usually decreases as children get older. It usually does not indicate a serious disorder,
although it can be a symptom of other disorders.
How can you prevent it? * Avoid the use of alcohol or sedatives if you sleepwalk.

Somnambulism In Macbeth
If the tragedy was to be read in the light of modern psychopathology the interpretation will be found
that Lady Macbeth is an accurate example of portraying the disease hysteria. It has been
demonstrated that there is a rigid determinism in the mental world and that psychophysical
processes are the result of a certain chain of causation of either conscious or unconscious. It has
been repeatedly demonstrated that the resistance offered by the memory of emotional experience
may sometimes be so great that it produces a dissociation or splitting of consciousness.
Somnambulism is one of the most marked forms of splitting of consciousness that is most liable to
occur in the disease hysteria, which is a form of mental dissociation. Characteristics of
somnambulism are that images are clearly represented and the subject seems to see and hear
everything. In each somnambulistic state the subject repeats the same words and makes the same
gestures as in the original experience which was responsible for the cause of the somnambulistic
state (Pierre).
Somnambulism may assume various types of sleep–walking or it may develop to such a high degree
that the subjects may wander in strange places for hours or days, and lose memory of their real
personality. It can also create hallucinations of the various senses, and the subject speaks to
imaginary persons or hears imaginary voices (Pierre). Hallucinations also occur in the sense of smell
as in Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene, it is

An Essay On Sleepwalking

  • 1. An Essay On Sleepwalking TREATMENT OF SLEEPWALKING The exact cause of sleepwalking is unknown but it believe it is because of inheritance. If one of your family members has or had sleepwalking behaviour you are more prone to inherit it. Sleepwalking is very common among children and treatment is usually not necessary because it typically goes away by the teen years. If sleepwalking is caused by underlying medical condition like restless legs syndrome, sleepwalking will automatically stopped once the underlying medical condition is treated. For certain cases treatment is needed if it caused injury, discomfort or embarrassment. 1) Scheduled awakening For children who sleepwalk very often and cause injury, you can try the treatment method called scheduled awakening. ... The lawyer who was defending for Ricksgers claimed that there was deficiency of oxygen supplied to his brain. It led him to behave abnormally and carry out involuntary actions such as murdering his wife. Nevertheless, the Assistant District Attorney claimed that Ricksgers actually killed his wife intentionally. It was because the authorities found a goodbye note from victim's purse as well as a 1988 receipt for a divorce. She told one of her friends that she had planned to leave her husband day after Christmas. One of the relatives told the policeman that Mr Ricksgers abuse their five–year–old child. All in all, Ricksgers was convicted on first–degree murder although he seemed to have no intention to kill his wife. Reference link : ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking Scene Essay Doctor Background: In the beginning of Act five Scene one, the doctor and the gentlewoman are conversing about Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking condition when Lady Macbeth appears. Her eyes open wide, she enters the stage holding a candle to brighten her path. She repeatedly rubs her hands together in the air in a feverish washing motion. She appears to be engaged in a conversation with Macbeth on the matter of how her hands can be cleaned with only a small amount of water. She continues for a while before returning to her chamber. [The doctor goes back to his bedroom and stops, closing the door behind him. Letting out a big sigh, he looks into the audience] Doctor: Oh, dear Lord. • 5. How Is Lady Macbeth Unethical In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is infamous for her commandeering nature and unapologetic attitude. She serves as the driving force behind her husband, Macbeth's murdering of King Duncan so that they may obtain the Scottish throne. On the surface, Lady Macbeth holds herself in high regard, and appears to society as a dutiful and subordinate wife to Macbeth. However, behind closed doors she is capable of manipulating him. After King Duncan has been murdered, Lady Macbeth maintains her composure as peers begin to suspect Macbeth of the crime, and impending consequences threaten the well being of the couple. She keeps calm until one night she sleepwalks and is observed by bystanders expressing her guilt over the crimes she has committed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anticipating Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, a gentlewoman and a doctor wait for her to leave her room in the middle of the night. Sure enough, she emerges from her room, fully asleep and mimicking the action of washing her hands. She proceeds to scream about a stain on her hands, "Yet here's a spot" and continues, "Out, damned spot! Out, I say!" (Shakespeare 5.1.27, 30). Though there is no physical blood on her hands, she is dreaming that she is covered in the blood of the main she plotted the murder of: King Duncan. It is evident that her guilt has invaded her peaceful dream realm in the way that she frantically is wringing her hands, and shouting for it to disappear. The hallucination of the blood complicates Lady Macbeth's guilt because regardless of the fact that Macbeth did the true killing of Duncan, she feels equally as responsible, hence the bloody hands. The presence of the bystanders during Lady Macbeth's most vulnerable moment serves to show that she has lost all regard for acting with comportment in public. Even though she is not consciously aware of her whereabouts, her body has definitively made the decision that it is time to come clean for her. Her body leaving the confines of her bed to discuss her crimes in front of other people is a way of her subconscious mind telling her the guilt is too much for her to ... On an average, people will spend 25 years sleeping and it is astounding how little people know about what goes on after they turn the lights off and lay their heads down; sleep can help people strengthen memories, improve physical performance, and become faster learners. There are many different types of sleeping disorders, including Insomnia which is the inability to fall asleep. Sleep Apnea is another sleeping disorder that interrupts breathing during sleep and causes an increased risk of heart disease. This sleeping disorder causes people to wake up as many as 100 times a night. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Remedy's of Health Communities stated, "PLMD is a common sleep disorder, especially in the elderly" (Stanley J. Swierzewski). Since these movements at night tend to wake people up at night, PLMD usually causes patients to have daytime drowsiness. Most people that have this sleeping disorder are unaware of it unless someone is asleep with them in the same bed. Cases of PLMD have been treated with sleeping pills that have also been helpful for treating the movement disorder of Parkinson's disease. It is thought that more than 10 million people suffer from RLS and over 8.5 million have dealt with walking in their sleep. I am part of both of those statistics. I will first talk about my experience as a whole with sleepwalking and then restless leg syndrome. I never thought of sleepwalking as a problem or sleep disorder even tho I did it myself as a child. On one of my sleepwalking excursions I apparently walked out of my room, through the living room, down 4 or 5 stairs (with no problem going down or back up), and over to my dad who was still awake watching television while lying on the couch. That all seemed normal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have not had a sleepwalking episode since I was 19 years old which would concur with what we now know in that the older we get, our deep NREM–3 sleep becomes less and therefore so does the sleepwalking. As with sleepwalking I did not know restless leg syndrome was a sleep problem or disorder. Also as with sleepwalking I started having RLS symptoms when I was a child. I did not know it was a thing because I was so young when I first had the symptoms and I don't recall even telling my parents there was a problem. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my fourth child that I remember it happening again with any kind of regularity. But after this go around of feeling the same painful irritating symptoms in my legs I was able to look it up on the internet and voila! Restless leg syndrome. I am glad to know what it is but as with sleepwalking there isn't a so called cure, only things you could do to manage the symptoms. There isn't even actually a test to be taken to determine if you have RLS, only certain criteria to be met.It is an annoying hurtful sensation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most common of sleep apnea is when the person stops breathing for short periods of time. This type of sleep apnea is called obstructive sleep apnea. This happens when that soft tissue in the back of the throat relaxes while sleeping and the tissue blocks the airway. Sleep apnea is more common in men rather than women, mostly in African–American and Hispanic. Breathing pauses normally last for about 10–20 seconds and can occur hundreds of times each night. This also makes people snore. Some major signs and symptoms of sleep apnea are snoring, choking, and gasping for air all during sleep. Less major signs are morning headaches, memory or learning problems, feeling tired or depressed, or waking up frequently. People with sleep apnea have a few options to help cure or somewhat get rid of their sleep apnea. There is a machine called a CPAP (continuous positive airflow pressure), it is a mask that you wear while sleeping. A CPAP provides a constant stream of air to keep you breathing while you are asleep. ("Sleep Apnea") There are many other choices to help with sleep apnea but the CPAP is the most common of all of them. Sleep apnea is as common as type 2 diabetes. • 15. Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking Quotes 1. Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking reveals that her conscience is filled with the guilt of the murders. She is seen washing her husband repeatedly and although she tries to wash out a certain spot, it never seems to leave her hand. This washing of her hands is symbolic of her trying to wash away her guilt, similar to earlier in the play when Macbeth tells her that nothing can wash away the sin his hands had committed. The Doctor and Gentlewoman, knowing that her sleepwalking is representative of something secretive and wrong, decide to not tell anyone about it. The quote, "foul whisp'rings are abroad. Unnatural deeds/Do breed unnatural troubles. Infected minds/To their deaf pillows will discharge their minds," (Shakespeare, 165) shows that the Doctor has a profound24 understanding of what Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking might indicate. Lady Macbeth's contrite25 state of mind will play a much greater role by the end of the play when she kills herself because she is overcome with it. 2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lady Macbeth's hand washing is symbolic her trying to wash away her sins and remorse. In the quote, "Out, damned spot, out, I say! One. Two. Why then, 'tis time to do 't. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard?" (Shakespeare, 163) Lady Macbeth is trying to remove the "spot" on her hand because it is a piece of evidence of her evil deeds. She is behaving much the same way Macbeth behaved after he had killed Duncan. She is paranoid, restless and repentant. The sins her and Macbeth have committed have depleted26 her peaceful state of mind. Macbeth's reaction and hers are very similar. However, after Macbeth had killed Duncan, Lady Macbeth was annoyed that he had been so weak to let it get to him. Sleep Deprivation, Nightmares, And Sleepwalking Blog Post Night Terrors, Nightmares, and Sleepwalking At night, you lock the house down, tuck the kids into bed, clean your home, and you might even finish some last minute work. I bet you never thought about the things that can happen at night. As we kiss our children goodnight, our favorite line is "Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite". You never thought about your son sleepwalking through the night or even your daughter screaming out her sleep. What about your twins, who are both, having nightmares! Let us think about one more thing, did you even know that this could happen to anyone at any age, even you. Many Americans around the world lack the knowledge of realizing how important sleep really is. The lack of sleep can cause short–term and long–term health problems. Night terrors, nightmares, and sleepwalking are all cases that fall into sleep disorders called parasomnias. Parasomnias are disruptive sleep disorders that can occur during arousal from either rapid eye movement or even non–rapid eye movement. Children from the age's four to twelve of ages experience night terrors. Considering, less is associated with adolescents and youngsters who are dealing with insomnia, which is the inability to fall asleep, is effected by twenty–five percent. Somnambulism Charles Brockeden Brown introduces a short thriller story that grasp the attention of the readers not pursuing the idea of who the killer was but rather questioning the state of mentality of the protagonist. Throughout the short story, Brown manages to invent a suspenseful tone that intrigues the reader through the idea of psychoanalysis and the constant questioning of Althorpe character as a whole. In the short story that explains itself, Somnambulism is described to correlate sleepwalking and the constant psychological battle the protagonist is constantly facing throughout the story. In Althorpe dreams he believes he is protecting Constnaie from an assassin set out to kill her and defends her by killing it. The way he describes it would only lead the readers to the conclusion that he actually commited the murder. "I was summoned, methought, to defend this lady from the attacks of an assassin. My ideas were full of confusion and inaccuracy. All that I can recollect is, that my efforts had been unsuccessful to avert the stroke of the murderer. This, however, was not accomplished without drawing on his head a bloody retribution. I imagined myself engaged, for a long time, in pursuit of the guilty, and, at last, to have detected him in an artful disguise. I did not employ the usual preliminaries which honour prescribes, but, stimulated by rage, attacked him with a pistol, and terminated his career by a mortal wound." (Brown Pg–7) Viewing his dream from a psych–analysis standpoint, you can understand that Althorpe is trying to interpret him killing Constanie Davis in a more fictional event for him to believe. • 21. The Effects Of Sleepwalking On The Nervous System Dennis Powell Professor Key Psy2012 1 December 2015 Have you ever known anyone who has sleepwalked? Perhaps, if you lived with young children, then you may have witnessed an act of sleeping or somnambulism. The characteristics of this parasomnia are simplistic in theory; a person who is a asleep appears to be awake and is performing activities without any knowledge once they awaken. Sleepwalking is common in adolescence due to hormonal changes, but can occur throughout an individual 's life. When present in adults it can indicate many more serious psychological issues underlying, for the majority sleepwalking is benign and is grown out of. Some factors that are thought to cause this disorder are: fatigue, fever, which directly affects the nervous system, general illness, stress, or sleep deprivation, although none show definite connection to the illness. Sleepwalking , formally known as somnambulism, is a behavior disorder that originates during deep slumber and results in ambulating or performing other in–volute comportment while asleep. It is much more mundane in children than adults and is more liable to occur if a person is slumber deprived. Because a sleepwalker typically remains in deep slumber throughout the episode, he or she may be arduous to arouse and will probably not recollect the sleepwalking incident. This can be categorized under several distinct sleep–wake disorders and is incorporated in almost all books used by modern psychologists. An episode can last ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Patrick Stump's Song 'Sleepwalking' I've heard thousands of song that people published. Some are good, some are not so good. Every once in a while, there are songs that gives me a spark of feeling. "This City" by Patrick Stump and "Sleepwalking" by The Chain Gang of 1974 are one of them. The song "This City", sings about how Patrick loves his city and that he would stay there for life. The song "Sleepwalking" sings about a man who got his heart broke and he thinks it's all a dream. "This City" reminds me of a time I moved to a different state and "Sleepwalking" reminds me of a time I got my heart broken. It started on a beautiful fall day. The leaves were picturesque and the air was crisp. Travelling from Hyndman, Pennsylvania, to West Virginia was a long trip. My family and I took the interstate 68. It's something about it, mostly the instruments, that keeps me drawn in. My mother ask me all the time if I ever get tired of hearing it. My answer is the same every time. There is another song that I like it's called "Sleepwalking" by The Chain Gang of 1974. It's another song that starts off with an inspiration melody. I can't explain the feeling I get when I hear this song. It feels like I am on another spiritual level. It reminds me of my spiritual development after a terrible break up. I ignore all the bad memory's that comes with this song and only focus on the good ones. "Maybe we're just sleepwalking." Unbelievably I discovered this song of a popular video ... • 27. Essay on Sleepwalking Sleepwalking Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder effecting an estimated 10 percent of all humans at least once in their lives (1). This widespread phenomenon varies in its intensity and frequency. While most sleepwalking incidents are short and not dangerous, some can involve self–injury and are much more dangerous for the sleeper. Also, most interestingly, the disorder seems to stem from many different sources, not from one definable cause such as a chemical imbalance. While it is predominantly pre–adolescents who suffer from somnambulism, it is also observed in adults, although the frequency and severity of incidents increase with age. The source of the disorder was once thought to be entirely psychological and an extension of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sleepwalking most often occurs at a certain point in the sleep "architecture" (6).This is the point where the sleeper's brain waves have become larger and he or she has moved into deeper sleep. This is not REM sleep, but deep non–REM sleep. The series of complex behaviors characterizing somnambulism includes "amnesia following an episode," and "difficulty in arousing the patient during an episode" (9). The patient can also have other REM disorders or psychiatric and medical disorders which do not account for the sleepwalking. While sleepwalking, the patients' brainwaves show a mixture of types of brainwave patterns, including ones similar to those observed in waking patients, as well as those found in deep sleep. It is the "awake" patterns which match the waking behaviors like walking and talking while the patient is still asleep enough so that he or she is not aware of what it happening and is not forming memories of their actions (3). The difference between older people's sleepwalking and that of children may be related to the sleep pattern changes a person undergoes as he grows older. Children spend more time in deep sleep (the stage during which sleepwalking is initiated) and as one becomes older, sleep is more fragmented, with more time spent in light sleep. There have been several cases of murder while sleepwalking that have gone to trial according to Murderous Dreams. Let us discuss whether sleepwalking is a valid defense for murder. I think sleepwalking could be a defense for murder in certain circumstances. Like a long history of the illness. Crimes like breaking and entering, trespassing or even robbery could also use a sleepwalking defense. Say the patient that sleepwalks was angry going to bed that anger came out on someone else in a sleepwalking incident that person could press charges for assault. If the defense proved the patient was sleepwalking, I would see that as a valid defense. To use sleepwalking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sleeping allows the mind a chance to rest and creates a bliss that one can only experience while he rests. Although important, sleep negatively provides the chance for nightmares to creep into the resting mind [Periodic]. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the murderers Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to lose sleep. Unable to bear the pain of both conscious fear and terror of the night, the couple slowly edges towards insanity [Periodic]. • 35. Sleep Walking Abstract Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is a sleep disorder belonging to the parasomnia family. Sleepwalking is a disorder that occurs when people walk or do another activity while they are still asleep. These activities can be as benign as sitting up in bed, walking to the bathroom, and cleaning, or as hazardous as cooking, driving, having sex, violent gestures, grabbing at hallucinated objects, or even homicide. The prevalence of sleepwalking in the general population is estimated to be between 1% and 15%. (Blackman, 2000) * Non–REM sleep Non–REM sleep is a much deeper, more restful kind of sleep. In non–REM sleep, the person's body is free to move around. Non–REM dreams are more likely to consist of brief, fragmentary impressions that are less emotional and less likely to involve visual images than REM sleep dreams and are more frequently forgotten. The period of Non–REM sleep is made up of four stages. Each stage can last from 5 to 15 minutes. A completed cycle of sleep consists of a progression from stages 1–4 before REM sleep is attained, then the cycle starts over again. People begin the sleep cycle with a period of non–REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep (Chang, 2010). A machine called an electroencephalograph (EEG) allows scientists to see the brain wave activity as a person passes through the various stages of sleep to determine what type of sleep the person has entered ( Aserinsky & Kleitman, 1953). A person who is wide awake and mentally active will show a brain wave pattern on the EEG called beta waves. Beta waves are small and fast. As the person relaxes and gets drowsy, slightly larger and slower alpha waves appear. The alpha waves are eventually replaced by even slower and larger theta waves. • 37. Blood As An Image In Macbeth Essay Shakespeare uses the symbol of blood in MacBeth to represent treason, guilt, murder and death. These ideas are constant throughout the book. There are many examples of blood representing these three ideas in the book. Blood is mentioned throughout the play and mainly in reference to murder or treason. The first reference to blood is in MacBeth's soliloquy in Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 33–61, when Macbeth sees the bloody dagger floating in the air before him. Also in this soliloquy on line 46 he sees "on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood", this means that there is blood on the handle and spots of blood on the handle. Out, I say" in reference to the blood that stained her hands after smearing it all over the servants after assisting MacBeth in the treasonous murder of MacBeth. This also represents her guilt of the murder. In Act 5, Scene 1, Line 38 she makes another reference to the guilt saying, "What, will these hands ne'er be clean?" The last reference she makes to the blood being on her hands representing her guilt is in Act 5, Scene 1, Lines 44–45, "Here's the smell of the blood still. This disorder of arousal is characterized by complex motor behaviors initiated during stages 3 and 4 of non–rapid–eye– movement (NREM) sleep (slow–wave sleep) (3). Behaviors during sleepwalking episodes can vary greatly. Some episodes are limited to sitting up, fumbling and getting dressed, while others include more complex behaviors such as walking, driving a car, or preparing a meal (2). After awakening, the sleepwalker usually has no recollection of what has happened and may appear confused and disoriented. The behaviors performed while sleepwalking are said to be autonomous automatisms. These are nonrelfex actions performed without conscious volition and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stages 3 and 4 are characterized as being slow wave sleep in addition to being the deepest levels of sleep. Approximately 90 minutes after being asleep, people enter rapid–eye–movement (REM) sleep (4). REM sleep consists of rapid eye movements, a desynchronized EEG, sensitivity to external stimulation, muscle paralysis and dreaming (4). Sleepwalking occurs during stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle, the deepest levels of sleep. This slow– wave sleep is normally characterized by synchronized EEG activity (4). This indicates that mental activity is very low during these stages of sleep. However researchers have shown that the EEG of a sleepwalker has diffuse, rhythmic, high–voltage bursts of delta activity associated with abrupt motor activity (1). This is very different from the EEG activity normally associated with slow–wave sleep. In addition to the EEG results, they found that there is a decrease in regional cerebral blood flow in the frontopariental cortices during sleepwalking (1). This indicates that sleepwalking is a dissociated state consisting of motor arousal and persisting mind sleep, which seems to arise from the selective activation of thalamocingulate circuits and the persisting inhibition of other thalamocortical arousal systems (3). This unnatural behavior serves as punishment for Lady Macbeth's plotting, as it was a clear violation of moral principles. She has begun sleepwalking because she supported murder for no reason other than indulging her ruthless ambition. During the same sleepwalking scene, Lady Macbeth also calls herself "To bed, to bed" (5.1.69) and further declares that "what's done cannot be undone.–To bed, to/ bed, to bed!" (5.1.71–72). Here, she directly contradicts what she said to Macbeth earlier in Act II following Duncan's assassination, showing her remorse over Duncan's murder at the hands of her husband. Her regret indicates the loss of her former resolution to go through with her plan and thus a change in her mentality. The Doctor even addresses the dubious nature of her behavior, commenting that "Unnatural deeds/ Do breed unnatural troubles. Infected minds/ To their deaf pillows will discharge their secrets." (5.1.75–77). More than anything physical, Lady Macbeth is suffering from a mental affliction that is caused by grief over her former actions. Eventually, her compunction drives her into committing suicide. As with Macbeth, if she had better judgement and acted more righteously, she would have avoided her unfortunate fate. Sleepwalking Through History Summary Haynes Johnson's, Sleepwalking through History: America in the Reagan Years, is a secondary source published in 1991 that is a Revisionist vision of the era of the Reagan Administration. It also criticizes the employment of "Reaganomics". Johnson was an extremely well–known journalist for the Washington Post. He was educated with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and a master's in American history from the University of Wisconsin. However, he served in the Korean War, so his opinion may be limited as the Cold War was taking place during the Reagan Administration. By reading some scenarios from a website, this has brought me to my answer on why I agree that it does. Let me share a story from the reading: "In 1981 in Scottsdale, Arizona, Steven Steinberg murdered his wife in the middle of the night, driving a kitchen knife into her body 26 times. In court, Steinberg admitted to killing his wife, but pled not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Steinberg claimed that he was sleeping at the time of the murder, and did not remember committing the atrocity. The defense argued that the act of murder was a dissociative reaction, meaning that it was produced by alterations in consciousness that were beyond Steinberg's control. The jury agreed, and Steinberg walked away a free man. Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is a phenomenon in which the body is awake and active but the mind remains asleep. The eyes are open and postural muscles are aroused, but conscious awareness is still suspended. It occurs during a portion of sleep called non–REM sleep, in which the muscles are not in the same near–paralysis state as seen during REM sleep. Telephone interview Gary is a CEO and leading expert in sleep disorders. 1) Are there any new technologies that can prevent or treat sleepwalking? I am not aware of any new technologies that are available to prevent or treat sleepwalking. There are some different forms of sleepwalking. Sleepwalking occurs in very deep sleep early in the night, and some of it is disorganized. There are other forms of sleepwalking that are more organized and have a purpose. For example, sleep eating is a disorder when people get out of bed and consume food during their sleep. But for all of those various forms of sleepwalking, we do not have any new or novel technologies that prevent or treat sleepwalking? 2) Is there a treatment for this disorder? Well sleepwalking is more common in kids and as children age and get into their teen years and adulthood, it is more common that sleepwalking goes away by itself. So it's kind of self–limiting for most people but not everyone. For kids and adults who sleepwalk the best thing to do is to gently guide the sleepwalker back into bed and that is what takes care of it. Firstly, blood is used as a symbol of guilt throughout the play. In 5.1, the amplification of Lady Macbeth's guilt is exemplified through the hallucinations of blood on her hands. This is evident when the gentlewoman describes Lady Macbeth's delirious actions to the doctor and states that, "it is an accustomed action with her, to seem thus washing her/hands" (5.1, pg. 70). The permanence of guilt is further highlighted when, in reference to the blood on her hands, Lady Macbeth states, "out, damned spot! out, I say" (5.1, 70). This showcases the great turmoil that she is suffering from the guilt of her sins. In addition, Lady Macbeth describes the scent of blood lingering on her hands: "here's the smell of blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia/ will not sweeten this little hand" (5.1, 70). Also, this highlights her descension into madness as her overburdening feeling of guilt has consumed her so tremendously, that she is hallucinating about the scent of blood. Furthermore, her eventual guilt, as indicated in the sleepwalking scene, contrasts heavily with her cold and heartless demeanor while assisting her husband in concealing King Duncan's murder earlier in the play. Even though they are not awake, sleepwalkers still have a certain path they need to follow to meet their goal. This describes the combination of uncertainty and courage in sleepwalking. Hirsch also states that "our hearts are thick black fists/flying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Somnambulism And What Is Transpiring In The Brain Somnambulism or sleepwalking is a major reason many people wake up with unexplainable bruises or are wearing an outfit they don't remember putting on. Sleepwalking falls under the wide umbrella of sleep disorders called parasomnias, or anything that can go amiss during sleep. Although the category is similar, somnambulism differs from night terrors. Sufferers are not in fact acting out their dreams but simply moving due to confusion in the central nervous system (Guilleminault, 2006). Many facets go into explaining what sleepwalking actually is and what is transpiring in the brain. General knowledge about somnambulism is important due to the reality that so many Americans are affected. Knowledge of this topic should begin with the causes of this sleep disorder, where and when it occurs, what happens during an episode, the many things that can go wrong, and what to look for to see if you or someone you know could suffer from sleepwalking. Causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most parasomnias are genetic and can affect people of all ages, though children are more prone to it. For infants to children up to the age of twelve causes could be anything from sleep loss, fever, or anxiety. Some adults who develop somnambulism later on in life credit their sleepwalking to a mental disorder, drugs, alcohol, and even prescription medication. • 69. Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking Essay Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene from Act V, Scene I was interpreted very well from both Artus Scheiner's painting and Michael Lynch's stage adaptation. Lynch's stage adaptation of the play provides a great sense of connection with Lady Macbeth. The dimmed lights and the darkened stage gave the scene such an intense and eerie feeling. Scheiner's painting presents Lady Macbeth as scary with her long black hair that covers most of her face and her mouth wide open. Her being dressed in white and holding a lit candlestick, brings a bit light to such a dark painting. Although Scheiner's painting is very detailed with the darkness of her hair, her white nightgown, and the dark colors of the background, Lynch's play adaptation gives a better understanding and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lynch's stage interpretation of Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene in Macbeth's Shakespeare provides a clear understanding of the scene with detailed colors, tones, figures, and landscapes. Characterization: Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking/talking. The Doctor has seen this before but has no idea what to do. Theme: Darkness is dangerous. Use of Language: "Yet here's a spot." Shakespeare is telling us that Lady Macbeth still sees blood on her hands from her involvement in the murder. Shakespeare wants the audience to see that Lady Macbeth's actions led her to guilty sleepwalking and rubbing her hands to wash the "bloody" spots away. In this scene, Shakespeare's decision to make Lady Macbeth sleepwalk makes her look like she subconsciously regrets her part in Duncan's murder. Lady Macbeth's downfall leads to the theme, "Darkness is Dangerous." Artus Scheiner illustrates Lady Macbeth as somewhat scary by giving her black long hair that covers most of her face and her mouth wide open. Lady Macbeth is dressed in white and carrying a candlestick, which gives the darkened painting some light to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Research Paper On Sleepwalking January 21st – Put on Interim Suspension and open charges of A&B and B&E at night pending investigation for behavioral misconduct. In the early morning (4:15 AM~) of Saturday, January 21st, I allegedly walked into a female's room (who I did not know prior to this other than passing conversation, having moved into this dorm two weeks prior) that was two doors down from mine and pulled her hair, and she apparently scratched me. I have absolutely no recollection of these events, and believe I was sleepwalking at the time of this incident due to a variety of circumstances: I was currently suffering from mononucleosis, I had some alcohol in my system at the time (stopped drinking 4 hours prior and was below the legal limit), this occurred two and a half hours after I went to sleep (1:30 AM~), my family has a history of sleep issues such as sleep apnea and sleep talking, and I have slept walk in the past through multiple doors and into family members bedrooms. ... • 73. Criminal Defense: The Sleepwalking Defense The "Sleepwalking Defense" has been used, though not frequently, as a criminal defense in court. In the US News article assigned, they touched on seven murders that used the "Sleepwalking Defense" in court to fight the charges against the person that was proved to have committed the crime. It was argued that the murders/crimes were committed when the defendant was asleep and totally unaware of their actions. Some of the sleepwalking actions committed during the murders led to the defendant being physically injured. Actions were also carried out in what seemed like clear awake and conscience thought, like hiding/disposing of evidence or actually telling the family dog to lie down during the murders. I did notice that most of these cases ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Research Paper On Sleepwalking Sleepwalking Sleepwalking has always attracted a sense of mystery and suspense. Has anyone here ever watched someone who was sleepwalking? I have. I was 13 years old and it was in camp when I watched my friend get out of bed and walk to the front door of our bunkhouse. I had no idea that she was sleepwalking. I tried whispering her name but when she didn't turn around, I just figured she hadn't heard me. I called out to her louder but still she didn't respond. That's when I noticed the faraway look on her face. Her eyes were glazed over and her face had a blank stare. She didn't turn back; she just kept walking straight towards the door. It was a very eerie thing to watch. I remember not being able to do anything but stare at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (This includes moving objects such as electrical cords or furniture to reduce the chances of tripping and falling. You may also need to block off stairways with a gate.) Avoiding sleep deprivation and going to sleep the same time on a regular basis are also recommended. Some people mistakenly believe that a sleepwalker should not be woken up. It is not dangerous to awaken a sleepwalker. If you do so, the sleepwalker will only be a little confused and disoriented. Experts suggest to gently guide the sleepwalker back to bed without waking them. What can you hope for a sleepwalker? Sleepwalking usually decreases as children get older. It usually does not indicate a serious disorder, although it can be a symptom of other disorders. How can you prevent it? * Avoid the use of alcohol or sedatives if you sleepwalk. ... • 77. Somnambulism In Macbeth If the tragedy was to be read in the light of modern psychopathology the interpretation will be found that Lady Macbeth is an accurate example of portraying the disease hysteria. It has been demonstrated that there is a rigid determinism in the mental world and that psychophysical processes are the result of a certain chain of causation of either conscious or unconscious. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that the resistance offered by the memory of emotional experience may sometimes be so great that it produces a dissociation or splitting of consciousness. Somnambulism is one of the most marked forms of splitting of consciousness that is most liable to occur in the disease hysteria, which is a form of mental dissociation. Characteristics of somnambulism are that images are clearly represented and the subject seems to see and hear everything. In each somnambulistic state the subject repeats the same words and makes the same gestures as in the original experience which was responsible for the cause of the somnambulistic state (Pierre). Somnambulism may assume various types of sleep–walking or it may develop to such a high degree that the subjects may wander in strange places for hours or days, and lose memory of their real personality. It can also create hallucinations of the various senses, and the subject speaks to imaginary persons or hears imaginary voices (Pierre). Hallucinations also occur in the sense of smell as in Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
