4. Hairstyles and Clothing
Hairstyles of each of the band members or artists is
quite messy/long. Some are medium length yet it varies
throughout but mainly the members have messy,
natural hair.
The clothing each person wears is pretty similar, going
from polo shirts, typical casual clothing like
jeans(skinny usually), jumpers, and leather or
harrington jacket. It’s different from other genres as
band members of indie groups usually wear the same
kind of clothing.
5. Posing/Camera Position
Hands in the pockets
Usually looking away from the camera, or if in a group
only one/two are looking towards the camera.
Stance is very slouched/natural, probably made to look
specifically in that way.
6. Lighting/Background
Light focuses mainly on the artists rather than the
background/surroundings
Lighter around the face, meaning above them or in
front of them.
Typically plain background, outside in specific areas
like towns, the places look quite blank with areas of
graffiti.
Each picture background is similar to each other in
some way, coloured but blank or dull with a street view.
7. Facial Expressions
Very dull, no stand out facial expressions, it’s plain and
simple.
Faces look un-interested and more natural, like they
aren’t posing for a picture.

9. Magazine Font/Pictures
In ‘indie’ magazine they tend to use the main
headline as the band/artist name for example
AMY
They usually use quotes from other bands
down the side inside of generic side
headlines, this could be a good technique as
readers will have to buy the magazine to
understand the context of the quote.
They colour co-ordinated the magazine
name with the headlines around the page,
therefore making it more eye-catching and
bold.
10. My magazine
For my magazine, I will need to have a suitable background that fits with
my genre, something plain with some shadow, or in a certain area like a
park/old housing estate as that seems to be the topic that all the artists of
this genre use.
The clothing of my model will need to fit with the bands, therefore with
typical ‘indie’ clothes and hairstyle I will have to fit someone that fits the
genre type instead of just getting someone to dress up as they may not
look correct. NME and Q both use face-up shots, or medium close ups
with dark clothing, the facial expressions are very serious, and the head
placement is at a certain angle, on the covers however the people tend to
be looking towards the camera, which may help in catching people’s
attention.
For contents pages, there is usually an action shot of a band playing in an
arena, this could be possible for me to make as I would just need to take a
picture of someone playing a guitar etc. However I’d have to make sure
they had one before organising this. Another way of setting out the
contents page could be to just take pictures of other people more like the
first lot of pictures where they were in a way posing, in front of a random
background (graffiti, houses).
