2. What is Genre?
• A genre is a particular category or style of
music, art or literature.
• Different genres have different conventions
that identify a song for example as part of that
genre. These can be found across the genre,
however there can be some overlap of
convention across genres.
• The word genre comes from French and
literally means “Kind”.
3. My Chosen Genre is:
Rock
• The image is usually a medium close up with
direct address and a serious expression. The
image can either overlap or be underneath the
Mast Head and the background is often dark.
• The title is often simple, sort and catchy in a bold
font usually black, red or white in colour.
• The sell lines are usually bold and vary in size and
placement. They are often white in colour and
may overlap the image but not the face, leaving
little to no white space
4. Text one: Kerrang!
Skyline advertises
what can be
found in the
magazine.
Masthead is bold
and overlapped
by the image.
Main image
uses direct
address and
serious
expressions.
Wear mainly
black.
Main sell
line, is bold
and in a
contrasting
colour to
the image.
More, smaller images create
intrigue for what is in the
magazine.
5. Text two: Rolling Stone
Mast head is
either behind
or in front of
the image
and is in
bright red.
Main image is
a medium
close up with
direct
address. The
model wears
dark colours
and heavy
make-up.
Sky line advertises what is in that issue of the magazine.
The sell lines
are all
equally
spaced away
from the
edge of the
page in
varying
sizes.
Main sell line is larger and more noticeable than the others.
6. Text three
Mast head is
clear and
large using a
read and
white colour
scheme.
Main sell line is
lager and bolder
than the rest to
drew in a
potential readers
attention.
The main image fills the whole front cover with the masthead and sell lines over lapping
the image but not the face. There is direct address and a close up.
7. Representation
• Woman can often be represented in a very sexual way,
with heavy make-up and a pouty facial expression.
• Men are presented as very serious, using direct address
and stoic expressions.
• Rock bands are presented as being a lot more serious
and thoughtful compared to Pop artistes for example.
• The archetype for a male Rock musician/bands is very
serious facial expression, with longer hair and a beard.
• The archetype for woman is a smoldering, seductive
expression with heavy make-up and often black or
leather clothing.
8. Summery
To fit into the genre of rock my magazine must
include:
• A colour scheme that consists mainly of black,
red and white.
• A simple, catchy title in a bold font.
• A main image with direct address.
• Plenty of sell lines to fill the white space,
usually using a white font.
