Advanced Education for Boatswain's Mates
There is currently no advanced education or degree completion opportunity available specifically to
Coast Guard Boatswain's Mates. The Coast Guard should implement a two–year Bachelor's Degree
completion program in Maritime Studies. By the time a Boatswain's Mate reaches the Pay Grade of
E5, they have potentially earned over forty–four credits of lower level courses which because of the
maritime–specific nature of the earned credits can only be used as "electives" at most institutions.
There are six state sponsored maritime academies in the United States (Massachusetts, Maine, Great
Lakes, Texas A&M and California and New York) which offer Maritime and Transportation degrees
as well as opportunity for US Coast Guard Deck Licenses. Allowing selected Boatswain's Mates to
attend one of the six maritime academies full time after completing a total of at least sixty credit

5. The Completion Of My Degree Program At Northeastern State...
At the completion of my degree program at Northeastern State University, commencement exercises
were rapidly approaching. As most of my classmates and friends were filled with excitement, I was
experiencing mixed emotions, most of all fear of the unknown as to where I would end up.
To be completely honest, I was fearful of leaving Tahlequah and Northeastern State simply due to so
many unknown variables as to what steps I would take next in my life. I dreaded the fact that I was
leaving Tahlequah, as it was a place that helped me to grown intellectually, emotionally, and
physically.
The influence of Dr. Kent Lashley had motivated me to become more scholarly and instilled a desire
of life–long learning. Emotionally, I was forced to grow, mature, and problem solve without having
my parents there to coach me, and as a result of that, I gained confidence and independence in my
ability to make it as a young adult. Physically, I grew and learned the importance of proper nutrition,
became an avid runner, and earned my 3rd degree black belt before graduating from college.
The fear within me was simply not knowing where I would end up teaching with my first job. I had
not applied too many places in Oklahoma before my graduation date as I had placed all of my eggs
in one basket. I had relied on a young lady that I thought would spend the rest of my life with and
was headed to Florida to fulfill a lifelong goal. Little did I know that the relationship would
completely dissolve

7. Community College Argumentative Essay
Many people dream of going to a well–known Public Four–Year College when they think about
their future. But, for some, Community College is the only option. " The Benefits Access for
College Completion (BACC) initiative was a multi–year initiative designed to provide community
college students with access to a full range of public benefits in order to reduce financial barriers to
college completion." (Duke–Benfield) This initiative took effect for people who attend college and
have families to attend to at home. Completing college is not such an easy task when trying to
provide for yourself and a family. "For students who are supporting families, the cost is even higher
as housing, food, and child care costs add to the total." (Duke–Benfield) The BACC provides people

This initiative is in place to prevent these individuals from dropping a class or dropping out of
college to work more hours and provide more for their children. More Community Colleges should
provide this option to students in order to increase completion rates.
The Community College has been a uniquely American institution for more than 100 years. The first
Community College was Jolliet Junior College, founded in 1901. Initially focused on liberal arts,
they expanded in the 1930s to include teaching technical skills and trades in response to the great
depression. Then after WWII, in response to the GI bill, there was an even greater need for
educational institutions to serve their local needs. In, " National Profile of Community Colleges;
Trends and Statistics." it is noted that the Truman Commission, in 1948, suggested a national
network of community colleges. By 1960, that network became a reality and today community
colleges educate more than half of the nation's undergraduates. So why do we need to improve the
community college graduation rates? Going to a community college allows a person

9. The ASAP Program
Recommendations: CUNY–wide expansion of ASAP
The ASAP program should be expanded CUNY–wide because of its cost–effectiveness and
tremendous success in raising graduation rates, while addressing some of the root causes of low
degree completion.
What is ASAP?
ASAP is an extensive support program for low–income CUNY community college students to
complete their associate's degree. The program was initiated in 2007 when the NYC Mayor's Center
for Economic Opportunity provided funds to CUNY to develop a program to increase graduation
rates. The program is by charitable contributions and especially NYC and NYS funding. In the fall
of 2014, the program served 4, 238 students (Inside ASAP, 2014). The program especially focused

In a cost–benefit study by the Center for Benefit–Cost Studies in Education, Teachers College,
Columbia University, Levin and Garcia (2013) found that ASAP cost CUNY an additional $ 3,900
per student, per year, but they concluded that the program is a cost–effective investment in
community college completion efforts. ASAP's success in graduating students means it actually
"spends $ 6,500 less per three–year graduate than for typical community college students" (Pierce,
2016). Additionally, Levin and Garcia also found that an investment in ASAP has large financial
returns for the taxpayer and the student, based on increased earnings and tax revenues, and on
reduced costs of public health, criminal justice, and public assistance spending. Levin estimates that
an individual who completes their AA would contribute an estimated $165,000 in taxes over their
lifetime, and save NYC and NYS over $ 40 million in expenditures for medical assistance, criminal
justice, and public assistance (Davidson, 2015). Levin and Garcia note, "Not only is ASAP less
costly per additional graduate and twice as effective in the production of associate degrees, but from
the perspective of both taxpayer and student, the benefits generated by ASAP represent a very
productive public investment with a high monetary return" (Levin and Garcia, 2013, p.

10. Doctoral Student Success Essay
Doctoral students strive to reach excellence through academia, research, dedication and willpower
yet, only 50% of doctoral students actually finish their respective program(s). What defines the
success of a doctoral student? Several factors are assumed to have great influence to how successful
a doctoral student is. Influential relationships, faculty advising and characteristic traits are just a few
(Gardner, 2009). Forming a doctoral identity is only part of the process. Constructive student
advisor relationships have positive correlations with student proactivity (Smith & Hatmaker, 2015).
Despite the overall goal of achieving a doctoral degree, various levels of the educational journey
influence the student's success in different ways. Stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three aspects of student relationships are important: 1) support and advice, 2) identity development
via training, and 3) identity development as a scholar (Baker & Pifer, 2011). Students that lacked
adequate support (family, friends and faculty) often felt depressed and struggled to move forward in
their academics. Completion rates of doctoral programs differentiate depending on the students
discipline however, one common factor is the level of the student's engagement in positive
relationships. Low completion rates are directly linked to disengaged students. Professional
socialization is an important aspect of positive student/faculty relationships. Adapting to the values,
norms, and culture of the chosen discipline will build skills, behaviors and organizational skills for
success. Building relationships with experienced members will further build emotional support to
meet the high demands and expectations of the doctoral scholar (Smith & Hatmaker, 2015).
Learning to work independent / self–directed Due to the drastic difference in classroom interaction,
the doctoral student often feels overwhelmed and isolated when they reach the 2nd stage of their
program (Baker & Pifer, 2011). Learning to work outside of the classroom is a common difficulty in

11. Factors Affecting Student Success
Factors Affecting Student Success in Associate–Degree Nursing Programs Introduction to the
Problem The rate of academic attrition is an overwhelming concern that many associate degree
nursing programs are facing. Undergraduate nursing program attrition rates continue to increase,
despite the high demand for student placement in these programs. High attrition rates in nursing
students of as much as 50% have been reported by some schools in certain states (Benn & Pacquiao,
2010). Additionally, as much as one–fourth of nursing students across the country are lost through
attrition at some point in their program (Seago, 2012). The problem addressed in this Scholarly

Just like any college student, not all nursing students are well primed to shift to such a difficult
pathway. Much research has been done which has focused on causes of attrition in ADN programs.
Much of this research has studied the predictability of the relationship between multiple academic
and non–academic factors attributable to academic success as an ADN student, as measured by
grades and attrition. With a specific focus on reviewing the prerequisite sciences, the literature
search revealed a fissure in knowledge as it relates to ascertaining prerequisite biological science
courses as being statistically predictive indicators of ADN students' academic success (Griffiths,
Bevil, O'Connor, & Wieland, 1995; Jordan & Reid, 1997; Potolsky, Cohen, & Saylor, 2003; Seago,
Keane, Chen, Spetz, & Grumbach, 2012; Wong & Wong, 1999). Pathophysiology and
pharmacology are both required courses within an associate degree nursing program. Due to the
highly difficult science–intensive and quantity–intensive nature of these courses, it is often placed
somewhere in the middle of the 2–year program in order to ease students into the nursing
curriculum at the beginning of the program yet with the purpose of this to develop a student's
competency of pathophysiology and pharmacology early enough in the program to apply directly to
safe patient care during scheduled clinical experiences. Due to the difficulty and intensity of these

While there are many problems college students' face while attempting to obtain a degree, the
largest hindrance from completion is that of financial ability. One of the largest contributors to
college dropout rates is the lack of financial support. Many college students must work either full or

The program is to still be funded by the US Federal Government, but to increase the funding for this
I propose a one percent federal tax increase on all major corporations and businesses with an annual
income of $250,000 or greater. This will likely incur great opposition initially as to why the increase
in tax rate is on that of large businesses. In response to this, the effort of this new program will be to
eliminate additional costly training by employers to undereducated employees. By having college
students who are actually obtaining their college degrees working for these large companies, the
need for additional training will decline. Thus, saving funds in order to finance the one percent

The proposed program will set to be launched during the upcoming years' financial aid process and
coincide with the initial financial aid applications. A new committee of current financial aid staff

Introduction
It is of certain that across Europe young people are calculating between joining degree courses and
other activities. In the European region, attainment of university degrees does not mean direct
employment for graduates. Graduates in the European region may consider paying over 9000
pounds. With unemployment levels across Europe on a dramatic decrease over the last decades
means that the entry level for graduate has been on a decrease (Reay, David & Ball, 2005). Across
the region, many students will be way up their studies before they realize that their degrees will not
give them a comparative advantage.
Moreover, investing in degrees in some countries is a risky investment. In countries such as Italy
and France, degree certificates are often tarnished. With such eventualities, students in such
countries would rather not invest in education. In France, the entry level for students in first year
degree programs is 48%. Of this number, 38% proceed to complete the programs (Arias Ortiz &
Dehon, 2013). Therefore, in order for students to remain relevant in the European and the global
market various strategies are employed. Students improve the strength of their degree credential by
joining masters as well as postgraduate programs.

21. Grant Reform Speech Analysis
This formal address relates to the new Rogerian argument being drafted to further the discussion of
Grant Reform in Indiana to enable equality of funding and increased completion rates within the
parameters of proposing new legislation and CHE.
Teresa Lubbers, the Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education, called out during the second
annual State of Higher Education address to increase college completion rates. According to Teresa
Lubbers, Indiana ranks 40th in education attainment and 39th in personal per capita income. These
low numbers represent real citizens of Indiana who want to achieve a better life for themselves and
their families through higher education (Indiana Commission for Higher Education). Lubbers
approach in education is clear and concise. From Lubbers point of view, by streamlining college

Although this address is somewhat dated, the information given shows the grassroots of increasing
completion rates and exemplifies Indiana government in motion to enhance economics for Hoosier
families. For the record, this address covers substantiated evidence for overall improvement for the
majority of college students in Indiana's public postsecondary institutions on a sensational level to
arouse members of Indiana General Assembly and CHE to continue to graduate more Hoosiers with
quality degrees on time and at the lowest possible cost.
The intended audience could easily read this valid and well–designed address. The address is
organized in a logical format and the reviews remain positive. Lubbers' arguments are in line with
the Indiana Department of Education, Governor Mike Pence, and the Indiana General Assembly.
For the Rogerian argument, I plan on using the commissioner's address to support the win–win
proposal for the Debate for Grant Reform in Indiana through channeling Lubbers' arguments in
relation to graduating more Hoosiers to enhance economics and meet the needs of employers by

1. For some students attending college, high school grades may be an issue for admittance into some
four year institutions. a. Many accredited four year institutions require a certain standard in which
their prospective students must meet. For some, these standards include a particular GPA, or Grade
Point Average, in which they may not comply with by the end of their high school career. The
guarantee transfer program gives the prospective student the ability to enter a program they may
have been previously ineligible for, assuming they meet all criteria for that program. b. By
establishing criteria for admittance into these programs, a student is able to clearly establish their
baseline and thus set themselves up for success early on. 2. Not only does the program give the
student the opportunity to enter programs they may have been previously ineligible for, it gives
them the same opportunity to graduate with in the same time frame of a student who attended all
four years at the same institution, but for a fraction of the cost. a. As stated earlier, tuition rates
amongst community colleges and four year colleges are substantially

26. Dual Credit Enrollment Is Increasing Rapidly Every Year
Across the United States, Dual credit enrollment is increasing rapidly every year. Almost every high
school offers a dual credit course of some sort. In the essay Dual Credit in the Community College
by Dr. David Lydic. A problem Dr. Lydic has with dual credit classes is whether the students, which
are getting the credit for high school and the college hours, are meeting the college level content and
getting the education that they need for their degree. With this, there is the problem in regards to
whether if the instructors or teachers that are teaching the class, are teaching the write material and
giving the right assignments that are needed in order to learn. Even in spite of the fact that these
problems seems valid and can be questioned by many people. Dual credit is a great way to get a
head start in your college career and also gives you a better chance in being successful in your
degree because it helps you acquire more college hours, and receive your degree earlier.
In Lydic's essay he states that he is not a big fan of the dual credit program and that he is in the
minority that does not agree with dual credit. In spite of the fact that he does not like and does not
agree with the dual credit program, throughout the whole essay, Lydic's research basically only
shows positivity and how dual credit benefits students. He states that when students have taken dual
credit that their "college completion rate was greater with a sixty six percent rate versus the fifty

One issue I see with all forms of the analysis is that the student was able to "elect to participate"
(Cho et al., 2012, p.1). According to U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences,
National Center for Education Evaluation, Regional Assistance [U.S. DOE], (2003), "The
comparison group should not be comprised of individuals who had the option to participate in the
intervention but declined" (p. 12). It seems that when studies are not randomized it decreases the
effectiveness of the study. As stated by the U.S. DOE, (2003), "Randomized controlled trials are a
critical factor in establishing "strong" evidence of an intervention's effectiveness" (p.5).

way of determining the effectiveness of a program. As stated by Cho et al., (2012), "Across all 10

Candidate School is ten weeks long and The Basic School is six months long (Marine Corps

As a new intelligence officer, I will be required to receive formal education through various

Upon completion of the my bachelor's degree, acceptance through the ECP, Officer Candidate
