The Pale Blue Dot, By Joel Achenbach
People often think about how vast, or how important the Earth is, it is the domain of the human race.
Where they strive to be the best, compete against others, world powers against another. But, in the
vast reality of the cosmos, the Earth, is nothing more than a tiny little "pale blue dot." Described
none other than Carl Sagan, "The Pale Blue Dot," reveals the scary reality about the placement of
the human race in the "enveloping cosmic dark." In his quote, Sagan uses pathos and logos about
this reality, opening a deeper understanding that beyond the planet Earth, humans are nothing more
than insignificant. He has revolutionized the way that people view our home, and the cosmos around
it. Joel Achenbach starts his Smithsonian article ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also took advantage of the gravitational pull of these reducing the time and fuel to travel
through the solar system, it was like a sling–shot effect. The Voyager satellites were launched in
1977, Voyager I mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn, and Voyager II, Uranus and Neptune. The
mission brought back stunning evidence that the people behind the mission didn't anticipate for. Io,
for example, was the discovered to have massive geological activity (the only other orbiting object
besides Earth). The Voyager's recorded nine eruptions during their brief orbit (NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, News and Archives). In Carl Sagan's show, Cosmos, he mentions that Voyager captured
lightning on the dark side of Jupiter (Sagan Ep. 1). This is just one example of many scientific break
throughs that the Voyagers have documented. Even up to 2012, mission control is still receiving
signals from the Voyager satellites, as of August 25th, 2012, Voyager I surpassed the heliopause of
the solar system (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, News and Archives). Once the Voyagers
completed their primary mission of encountering the outer gas giants, "as Voyager I was heading
toward the outer reaches of the solar system, Sagan was among those who persuaded NASA to aim
the spacecraft's camera back toward Earth, by then billions of miles away."

Dot's Donut Shop: A Short Story
Despite it's location, Dot's Donut Shop was about to get famous. All because of a fifteen year old
girl named Larissa Summer. Now don't get me wrong. Larissa was about the same as any average
teenage girl. She loved to text her best friend about the cute boy in their Biology class, wear
makeup, fix her hair and dress in the latest fashion. But one of the things Larissa did displeased her
friends. Larissa liked to help Mr. and Mrs. Dot run their donut shop every morning before school.
Larissa's friends didn't think it was cool to help old people run a diminishing donut shop. Dot's
Donut shop was in the run down part of town. Forgotten and forsaken by most of the people that
lived there. Larissa wished that she could help the Dots get more ... Show more content on

"You might be overthinking this just a bit. How long have you been working on this donut now? A
month?" Larissa nodded her head slowly. Mr. Dot continued,"And have you been making it how you
think you would like it, or how the world would like it?" Larissa stood there deep in thought. What
had she been doing? Hadn't she been making a donut that people would like, or had she been
focusing too much on herself and how perfect the donut should be to her? Larissa glanced at the
Dots. "I guess I was thinking too much about myself and not much about everyone else," admitted
Larissa. "I'm going to go and try again!" "Atta girl Larissa!" exclaimed Mr. Dot. "You can do it!"
Larissa marched back into the shop's kitchen and went back to work. This time, she focused on
making a donut that others would enjoy, not just herself. Larissa mixed up a chocolate cake batter
donut, and filled it with a fluffy, white, sweet filling. Then Larissa whipped up a heavy chocolate
glaze to cover the delicious donut in. The glaze bubbled and simmered on the stove until it was nice
and gooey. Larissa dipped the donut into the glaze then set it aside to let it harden. After the glaze
had hardened, Larissa covered the top of the donut in a white frosting. For the finishing touch,
Larissa shaved some milk chocolate and some white chocolate off of big blocks. Then she sprinkled
the shavings over the delicacy of a donut. Now it was finished. Larissa excitedly scurried out of the
kitchen to show the Dot's her

Analysis Of The Movie ' Hoot '
Introduction
The movie Hoot was created in 2006 based off the book that was originally written four years prior.
The main conflict of the movie was a disagreement between business expansion and environmental
protection. The story is set in the small town of Coconut Cove, Florida, where almost the entire
town is excited for a new pancake house named Mother Paula's. But what the public does not know
is that there is an endangered species of owls living in burrows right where the pancake house is
meant to be built. Three kids learn about the owls and make it their responsibility to make sure that
the pancake house is never built and the owls be protected. The company feels as though they have
the right to build on the property because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The areas that are being considered are home to enough oil to last the country for 200 years, coal for
250 years, and natural gas for 120 years (McClatchy). If utilized, these natural resources would help
to boost the economy, and reduce domestic prices of oil and petroleum based commodities including
but not limited to; ink, nylon rope, dyes, crayons, deodorant, trash bags, shoes, and petrol. Not only
would the price of physical goods decrease, but also the price of energy, as most of it is created by
burning fossil fuels. Along with having a large effect on the economy, the expansion of the oil
industry would create an opportunity for employment for many citizens. According to a study
conducted by Wood Mackenzie, opening these lands to drilling both onshore and offshore, would
create approximately half of a million jobs (McClatchy). The new workers would receive a large
salary and this in turn would boost the economy. In 2011, the average salary for rig workers and
other industry personnel was $99,175 (Hargreaves). If half of a million employees earned the
average wage, it would put $49,587,500,000 into the hands of the consumers on an annual basis. To
achieve this vision, the government would need to lift its current restrictions on oil drilling in Arctic
Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, the Florida Gulf Coast, and almost all

Voyager 1 Space Probe
On July 14, 1990, the Voyager 1 space probe took a picture from 6 billion kilometers away of, which
at first appeared to be, uninteresting bands of assorted colored lights. But, when you squinted at the
bands you found an easily missed pale dot, less than a pixel small. That tiny little speck was planet
Earth. Carl Sagan, the legendary astronomer, had, in fact, requested for a picture of Earth from
Voyager 1. He captioned it Pale Blue Dot and authored a book of the same name. In it, he wrote:

The Color Blue Essay
and green. Blue as discussed earlier was represented as the color of the God and other religious
concepts, so the major incorporation of the color blue in the reliquary chasse indicated the spiritual
significance it carried. Envisioning blue on the chasse unified people to Jesus Christ. Many of the
reliquary chasse of the 12th century narrated a story; this individual one narrates the crucifixion of
Christ. There are several key figures engraved throughout the exterior of the chasse, however since
the crucial scene of the execution are shown on the front face of the chasse, that indicates that this
chasse was primarily to be seen from the front rather than the sides. If viewed from the front, the top
has three figures designed on it. In the center is the God the Father and on his either sides are two
unknown saints. All three figures are represented in mandorlas however in different colors. The God
of Father is displayed in the blue mandorla while the saints are shown in green mandorla. Here we
can interpret a sense of hierarchy because the God of Father is shown in blue, which represents a
divine color, however the saints are represented in green that is a mix of blue and yellow. So, blue
still exists and represents divinity, yet the mixture of blue and yellow to produce a different shade of
blue signifies that the God of Father is above and more important than the saints. The background is
enameled with a deeper shade of blue, probably indicating the larger divinity of

Yayoi Kusama's Rtistic Identity
I first became attracted to Yayoi Kusama's work when I came upon a 1966 photograph of Kusama
modeling on her own installation with painted dots covering her body. The photograph
communicated what seemed to be a special message that fascinated me; I was curious about what
symbolism the polka dots express and what connotations Kusama was intending to reveal by
painting repetitive tessellations. I was instantly drawn to the manner in which Kusama dresses in the
fashion of her own endless imagination; it seemed that Kusama's body and art have merged into one
creative entity, softening the variance between the artist and the art piece. In short, the photograph
inspired me in discovering Kusuma's history, analyzing her art pieces, and contemplating my ...

By analyzing the history of Kusama, a fundamental explanation or motive for the themes of
Kusama's art can be gleaned. Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan during a
tumultuous time of economic crises. The Japanese population was extremely oppressed by the
Japanese military as the Great Depression reached Japan. Kusama began to express enthusiasm in
making art as she began exhibiting her work in her teens; however, her family was not supportive of
her interest and tried to influence her towards a conventional path of becoming a traditional
Japanese housewife. Kusama's relationship with her family, and especially the relationship with her
mother, was a contributing factor to her anger against any kind of political and social oppression.
Kusama's mother was a disciplinarian figure in the family and tried to force her daughter to follow
traditional gender roles, which disregarded Kusama's aspiration of professionally pursuing art.
However, Kusama's creative ambitions were not curtailed by her family's conflicting interests or the
demanding work called upon her following the outbreak of World War Two.

A Day with Eutopia
"Can you imagine, loving a man so greatly, so completely, that you would surrender everything you
have just to be near him, just to have him near you" (Crawford, A Woman 's Face). I know what it 's
like to love someone this much, but in my case, it was not a romantic type of love. My two older
sisters Madeline and Paige were adopted out into a Mormon family when Madeline was three years
old, and Paige was eight months old. At the age of twelve, I discovered Paige while stalking her
adoptive sister Haley on YouTube. I didn 't know Paige and because of this, I found myself
imagining what she was like, and trying to imitate that. In most situations, I asked myself, what
would Paige do, because even though Paige was a total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I met the Taylors outside in their car, and Paige was every bit as gorgeous as I thought she would be.
Her chocolate brown curly hair was pinned back with a white bow; she wore a plain gray T–shirt
and light blue jeans. She had pale freckled skin and rosy cheeks. Paige accentuated her sparkling
blue eyes with thick black mascara that evenly coated her eyelashes. Although Paige and I shared
eye color, her eyes were smaller and placed much closer together than mine. She had a large nose,
and thin glossed over lips. Her Mother, Karen Taylor, who was sitting in the passenger seat had a
clean, makeup–free face, and stick straight dirty blonde hair. Karen had relatively pale skin that was
surprisingly wrinkle–free, she had no blemishes or freckles on her face, her eyes were small, wide–
set, and blue, her nose, like Paige, was large; She had thin lips and straight pearly white teeth. She
was wearing a blue T–shirt and Jeans. Bob Taylor 's skin compared to Karen 's was quite a bit tanner
but just as clear and wrinkle–free, his lips were also thin, and his teeth were also straight, he had salt
and pepper hair, bushy black

Similarities Between The Inner And Outer Planets
"Our solar system consists of one star and some debris," said Carl Sagan. There are many
differences and similarities between the Inner and Outer planets. Our solar system is comprised of
the Sun being in the middle, then followed by planets rotating it. The planets which orbit the Sun are
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The Inner planets are very
different from Outer planets and the Outer planets are completely different from Inner planets, but
both are very similar in many ways. Our planets in the solar system have many similarities and
differences.
First of all, Inner planets are different from Outer planets in many ways. The surface of Inner planets
compared to Outer planets are rocky, Inner planets are denser, all the Inner planets are in the asteroid
belt. "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos
stir us –– there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory,
of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries."–Carl Sagan. There
is nothing more than what there is. The surface of the Inner planets is very different from those of
the Outer planets because, Earth compared to Uranus is completely different due to Uranus being
mostly made out of gas. The Inner planets are also much denser than Outer planets. For example,
Venus ' average density is 5.24g/cm3 as opposed to Neptune which is 1.33g/cm3. Lastly,

Notre Dame Mission Statement
When searching for the perfect high school, I was especially drawn to Notre Dame, captivated by its

how tiny Earth is, but how meaningful our life is. He proceeded to read a quote by Carl Sagan from

Carol Sagan Legacy
The extent of Carol Sagan's legacy and contribution to the exploration of the cosmos is almost
incomprehensible. His public broadcasts of "Cosmos", his zest and crucial impact in the lives of
others, his NASA career and explorations; his message on Phoenix, and his perpetual career as a
professor all leave his existence on this pale blue dot with the potential to butterfly–effect our entire
human race. It is a paramount legacy, if only relatively. NASA confirms, "Carl Sagan played a
leading role in the American space program from its very beginning. He was a consultant and
adviser to NASA beginning in the 1950s" (http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/people/profile.cfm?
Code=SaganC) . As a professional scientist with a doctorate in astrology Sagan was appropriately
fascinated with outer space. Taking every opportunity to venture into the unknown, enthusiastic
Sagan helped design and manage several space missions. On a mission to Venus Sagan helped
NASA create the Mariner 2. To visit Mars, Sagan gave attention to the Marine9 and Viking 1 and

She grasped my hand to release my mind from the trance. I stroked my fingertips over the wrinkles

therapist had prised into the glass fishbowl that balances on my shoulders. They hope to understand.
So do I. A garish yellow glow spat from the overhead lamp, letting shadows dance in the darkened

I began to panic, as more and more of the black dots climbed into me, wriggling up my arms like

needles, pricking harder and harder each time, the uttermost betrayal from my only friends, the only
ones who ever knew me. The fishbowl began to crack, like icy roads in the Monday morning rush. I
grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer and began to scoop out the bugs, slowly at first, but then as
more began to form, I picked up the pace. Every time I managed to flick one body to the tiled floor,
another would begin to crawl up from my toes, coating me in a layer of darkness. My body was
numb as lines of ruby appeared on my arms, but my heart raced uncontrollably. Trickles of water

of relief did not last long– a dark shadow formed in the doorway, blocking all light entering the
room. It looked like a shadow; as dark as hell, it spoke words of sin and hate, with a voice low
enough to shatter glass. I staggered backwards, and held myself up using the counter behind me. It

Pale Blue Dot
Carl Sagan extravagantly uses syntax, diction, and rhetorical devices in his essay "Pale Blue Dot" to
describe how planet earth is just one small speck in the vast unknown area of outer space, and how
we as people could be classified as insignificant to the rest of the solar system.
Within the story, Sagan used astonishing examples of syntax to get the reader thinking, not only
about the essay itself, but about the bigger picture. Near the end of the essay Sagan described how
we have explored the wide array of planets in space, but have not settled on any by saying, ¨
Visit, yes. Settle, no ¨(Sagan 4 of 5). This use of short sentences impacts the reader and really catches
their attention. Instead of drawing out a long explanation, he used these short sentences to quickly
convey the importance of how unknown that outer space really is and how we are are only one small

denotation is very similar in the sense that it says the word to be an idiosyncratic belief or
impression that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as
reality or rational argument. If the author had chosen to use a different word in place of delusion, it
would not have taken the reader into another dimension or imaginary world , which this word did
very well. It created a sense of unknown when read by the reader, highlighting the key idea that the

The Demon Haunted World And Silent Spring
In the books The Demon–Haunted World and Silent Spring, the authors write about large issues
facing the public in the time period. Rachel Carson faces the issue of pest control in the middle of
the twentieth century. Insecticides are used in excess, permeate the environment, and it is commonly
accepted that they have no ill consequences. Carson compiled the research of many scientists and
showed, despite fierce opposition, that insecticides pose a high risk of destroying the environment
and are harmful to humans. Carl Sagan writes about his concerns about the path society is taking
away from scientific thinking into superstition and pseudoscience. He debunks popular thoughts
about UFO's, hallucinations, dogmatic con–men, and anti–science ... Show more content on

Carl Sagan's book The Demon–Haunted World covers why people think the way they do about
paranormal claims, UFO's, and pseudoscience. Sagan demonstrates that the pattern of thinking
uncritically is not limited to fringe claims, but is practiced throughout society to its detriment. Carl
Sagan argues that it is critical that people change their habits "But if we don 't practice these tough
habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us – and we risk
becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along" (Sagan 38).
Peter Barton Hutt and Gregory Frantz argue that corporations have abused the critical faculties of
Americans to promote a lifestyle of consumption and conformity to social spending: "In other
words, the same human propensity for uncritical thought and conformity that has historically been
exploited by religions and governments is today being capitalized upon by corporations to promote
consumerism" (Hutt 83). Their position is reinforced by Sagan writing, throughout the book, that it
is often profitable to those who provide the beliefs for others and it is in their best interests to
discourage individual thoughts. Silent Spring is a detailed analysis of the damages caused by
pesticides to the environment. Rachel Carson explains that through the blind, unquestioning
consumer culture, companies have sold deadly poisons with unapparent warning as a catch–all cure

Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
O'Connor is an excellent author to study. She was a devout Christian, and often incorporates an
opportunity for redemption for her characters towards the end of her stories. Additionally, all of her
stories are well–written and use several literary devices, such as foreshadowing and irony. Through
the use of foreshadowing and irony, the reader has desire to continue reading her stories and has
anticipation for the ending. Moreover, although she doesn't always include her beliefs in her stories,
O'Connor still creates diverse, unique characters and themes. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," I
connected with the grandmother. However, I did not connect with her throughout the story, only

Moreover, I connected with her trying to persuade The Misfit to find Jesus. "If you would pray,

spread Jesus to those who do not want to listen. "Pray, pray, pray, pray" (O'Connor 110).
Additionally, I thought it was powerful how she kept trying to shed light and hope for The Misfit
through Christ. By creating dynamic and diverse characters, I found several of O'Connor's creations
to be engaging and interesting. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," I found the grandmother to be
extremely engaging in how dramatically she changed from the beginning of the story to the end. In
the beginning, the grandmother was shallow, vain, and self–absorbed. "The grandmother had on a
navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a
small white dot in the brint. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her
neckline shad pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident,
anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady" (O'Connor 13).

New Zealand Flatworms Play a Huge Role in Agriculture
The New Zealand Flatworm (Arthurdendus Triangulates) is an Invasive Species here in Ireland. It
originates from New Zealand as the name implies and has spread extensively throughout Europe. It
was first recorded in Northern Ireland in 1963. In 1963 it was looked upon as a novelty in gardens
around belfast and was not seen as a pest that could in the future potentially do detrimental damage
to agricultural land. In 1983 scientists discovered that these flatworms were preying on our native
types of earthworms, and drastic falls in their numbers were seen in areas where the NewZealand
Flatworms were abundant. Earth Worms play a huge beneficial role in Irish Agriculture land and
gardens by improving drainage, aerating soil, mixing the soil structure and decomposing material,
when they are preyed apon by the New Zealand Flatworm they can completely disappear in severe
cases and in those areas the land can become water logged and as a result growth of plants suffer

mainly in the North of the Country but sightings have also been recorded in the West in County
Mayo and County Sligo. The worm does not thrive in soil temperatures above 23 degrees which is
why they are usually found in the North of which ever country they inhabit as soil temperatures are

Yoongi Alternate Ending
Everybody knew that eventually there would be an end. It was no surprise. As the years
accumulated, the signs became more clear. Yoongi was also always reminded due to the bright pink
neon billboards on what seemed like every road, the letters flashing the amount of days left until the
end. He grew up passing these billboards every day and watching the number grow smaller and
smaller. He had never lived a single day without knowing that one day the world would just come to
a halt and everything would stop. Everybody would die and there wasn't a single thing that could be
done. Everything would just be over. It scared him, of course. He would wake up with that deep
sense of dread in his gut every morning and go to sleep with it every night. ... Show more content on

By the time he graduated from middle school, he had learned to finally accept it. He would let the
world take him. Yoongi laughed as he leaned back recklessly, his body barely still on the ledge of
the roof. His friend, Jimin, laughed along with him before reaching out to grab ahold of his tie and
yanking him forward. Yoongi was sent hurling off the ledge and back towards the ground of the
school roof and with a couple of new scratches. "There's only one hundred days until the world
ends, Yoongi. Leaving now would be a waste." Jimin scolded playfully and Yoongi just rolled his
eyes. However, the words left a churning feeling in his gut and his palms sweaty. Yoongi looked up
at the sky with the red and orange streaks shooting across the pale blue with the occasional dots of
white and he smiled bitterly. There were only one hundred days left of this world. This world with
it's sunsets, cities, and life. "Do you think you'll miss it?" Yoongi croaked out before shifting his
gaze back to Jimin, his smile softening. Jimin smiled once before he spoke. "Of course i will. I'll

Nymph Callisto Analysis
This visual description is of the oil painting by Frenchman François Boucher Jupiter in Guise of
Diana and the Nymph Callisto dated 1759 is an oil painting 57.79 × 69.85 cm (22.8 × 27.5 in) on
canvas, which hangs in the Nelson–Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. The focal point
of this work is the two voluptuous female figures in the center of the bottom half of the canvas. The
women appear to be gentle lovers, gazing each into the others eyes; their expressions are soft and
loving, and their bodies relaxed. Their lightly toned skin colored with a subtle pink flush along with
their curvy bodies make the figures look and feel soft, beckons the viewer to reach out to touch
them. Their sensual appearance enhanced by the pale pink and ivory palette used to render their
forms, so gently blended the change in tone throughout the images no brushstrokes are visible.
Callisto, a beautiful fully nude young blond nymph reclines, across the lap of Jupiter, in the guise of
Diana, her right arm extended lazily across Diana's right forearm, her hand, holding an arrow, gently
touches an angelic putti. Tucked between their bodies is a satiny ivory–white gown, atop a velvety
smoky blue dress and leopard skins. The detail of the pelt is so expertly rendered an observer wants
to stroke it, fine brushwork defines the fur, dark umber spots on golden ground.
Callisto's face gently tilts back over her right shoulder, her long blond, curly tresses pulled back and

Negative Effects Of Color Blindness
Throughout World War II, it was found that analysis reports of aerial photographs were more
accurate when at least one member of the group of analyzers was colorblind. Color blindness is a
vision deficiency disorder, in which the eye becomes more or less sensitive to color. This is the
result of the malfunctioning, or lack, of special cone cells in the eye. Although color blindness may
seem beneficial in a situation similar to war, most people with color blindness find it to be a
disruption to everyday activities, and sometimes even a danger to themselves or people around
them. There are many significantly differentiating types of color blindness that can be characterized
with varying symptoms; however, many people do not even realize they have a vision deficiency
disorder, which is why color blindness is difficult to diagnose. Overall, many humans carry a
disorder that affects their vision of the world, but few have been diagnosed, and even fewer choose
to accept help despite the diagnosis of their disorder (Colour Blind Awareness, Color Blindness).
Color blindness can be inherited in a variety of ways. This disorder can be genetically inherited
through sex–linked genes, or autosomal recessive genes, from two parent cells to a zygote. In these
cases, the infant would be born with color blindness, although the severity of the disorder could
possibly change with age. Color blindness may also be acquired, so a person may not become color
blind until later in life. In

Sustainability in Hawaii
In 1990, NASA launched the Voyager I. As it left the solar system and traveled on for another six
billion kilometers away from Earth, it took the famous photograph, 'Pale Blue Dot.' In this iconic
photography, Earth is portrayed as an insignificant, fragile speck in the vast and endless expanse of
the cosmos. Nevertheless, on that tiny pixel lay all of the wonders we humans have ever known –
wonders that are now threatened by human development. As pollution, global warming, climate
change, habitat destruction and exploitation of resources threaten the "pale blue dot," the demand for
sustainable development that meets our present needs without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs grows every greater. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is because of the forethought of others that I am able to experience Hawaii's natural magnificence.
I want my children – and their children, for generations to come – to be able to say the same. It is for
this reason that I believe we must utilize a twofold sustainable ideal in which we protect the
environment while also growing economic prosperity. We must strike a balance between revering
nature and supporting human quality of life.
In Hawaii, economic and environmental choices often go hand–in–hand. Our state's location in the
middle of the Pacific Ocean has created a natural paradise which draws people from all over the
world who, in turn, bring economic prosperity to the state through our tourism industry. However, it
is also undeniable that sustainability and clean energy are essential to Hawaii due to our bearings in
the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Tourism and development demand tremendous amounts of energy,
land, and resources. Some argue that we must continue to exploit our land and resources for tourism
and development, which supports us financially. Not only does Hawaii's economy depend on others,
but Hawaii as a whole is pathetically dependent on others in every aspect. The dependence on
imports that we are currently imprisoned to threatens our resources and our way of life. Currently,
95% of Hawaii's energy comes at great cost from imported fossil fuels. Every year, 47.2 million
barrels of oil, or roughly 34 barrels per person in Hawaii, are

Woman With Peacocks Distinctively Visual
Woman with Peacocks, is a commercial lithographic print. While the sheet is 16 inches by 12 and
1/16th inches, the image itself is 13 3/8 inches by 8 7/8 inches. The print is a part of the Elisha
Whittlesey Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York City. The print,
Woman with Peacocks, was created in 1897 by an English born American artist named, Louis John
Rhead. There is no type of text in the print, so I have an assumption that it was not used in any time
of advertisement but was instead, created for the pleasure of viewing.
This lithographic print depicts a woman in period clothing and adorned hair in an outdoor setting
with trees and leaves, and what appears to be a two sections of grass or ground divided by a set ...

The dress that the woman is wearing, is a maroon color which is also used in the some of the
feathers on the peacocks. A poppy–red color in between the curved lines, creates a band of bright
color that divides a cobalt blue ground on the left and somewhat muted teal grass on the right. This
bright, intense poppy–red color is also used in the top part of the sky. The sky may be a two–toned
poppy–red on the top and the bottom half is a paler poppy–red color. The bottom paler poopy–red
could also be a wall surrounding the landscape. The peacocks' faces, some feathers, and portions of
the symbolic peacock tail feathers are a poppy–red color. The sleeves, waist band, and neckline of
the woman's dress are also the poppy–red color as well as the dress pattern that mimics the shape of
the peacock tail feathers. The warm color of the sky could be an unrealistic representation or an
intense sunset or sunrise. The calm vivid blue and less bright teal of the trees, leaves, and landscape
are in contrast with the energy of the poppy–red color. These complementary colors created a
balance in the print. The teal grass is located in the center with teal tree trucks on the right and the
same teal is used in the leaves in the left top corner. This color is also the body color of the peacock
on the woman's left side as well as in the feathers of both peacocks. The cobalt blue is used in the
landscape layered on top and below the teal grass that is divided by the poppy–red curved band. The
leaves in the trees are the cobalt blue color as well as the body of the peacock on the woman's right
side and details in the feathers on both. The color brown is only used in the woman's hair which is
adorned with a poppy–red flower and cobalt blue crown of leaves. Her skin is very light and an
almost white color. This very pale flesh tone can be seen in the detail of the teal leaves in the top left

Oxygen Essay
Oxygen
Oxygen, symbol O, colorless, odorless, tasteless, slightly magnetic gaseous element. On earth,
oxygen is more abundant than any other element.
Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by the British chemist Joseph Priestley and, independently, by the
Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele; it was shown to be an elemental gas by the French chemist
Antoine Laurent Lavoisier in his classic experiments on combustion.
Large amounts of oxygen are used in high–temperature welding torches, in which a mixture of
oxygen and another gas produces a flame of much higher temperature than is obtained by burning
gases in air. Oxygen is administered to patients whose breathing is impaired and also to ... Show

Gaseous oxygen can be condensed to a pale blue liquid that is strongly magnetic. Pale blue solid
oxygen is produced by compressing the liquid. The atomic weight of oxygen is 15.9994.Oxygen
composes 21 percent by volume or 23.15 percent by weight of the atmosphere; 85.8 percent by
weight of the oceans and, as a constituent of most rocks and minerals,
46.7 percent by weight of the solid crust of the earth. Oxygen comprises 60 percent of the human
body. It is a constituent of all living tissues; almost all plants and animals, including all humans,
require oxygen, in the free or combined state, to maintain life.3
Three structural forms of oxygen are known: ordinary oxygen, containing two atoms per molecule,
formula O2; ozone, containing three atoms per molecule, formula O3; and a pale blue, nonmagnetic
form, O4, containing four atoms per molecule, which readily breaks down into ordinary oxygen.
Three stable isotopes of oxygen are known; oxygen–16 (atomic mass 16) is the most abundant. It
comprises 99.76 percent of ordinary oxygen and was used in determination of atomic weights until
the 1960s.
Oxygen is prepared in the laboratory from salts such as potassium chlorate, barium peroxide, and
sodium peroxide. The most important industrial methods for the preparation of oxygen are the
electrolysis of water and the

Comparing The Red Room by H.G. Wells and The Darkness Out There by Penelope Lively
The "Red Room" was the earlier of the two stories written in 1896 by H.G. Wells and "The
Darkness Out There", written by Penelope Lively was published in1984.
The titles of both stories suggest that fear or horror will play a part. "The Darkness Out There"
generates an eerie feeling by not defining a specific threat but leaving it open to the imagination.
"The Red Room" is not as scary but the use of red often shows danger or fear and this is why it has
been used here.

Rutter ("She's a dear old thing") and Pat who, although she is not described as very nice looking,
runs a "Good neighbours' club" for children. As the story opens Sandra is on her way to help Mrs

where a German plane had come down during the war and it was said that people still heard the
pilots talking. "You didn't go by yourself through Packers End if you could help it, not after teatime,
anyway." Packers End is described as a "rank place, all whippy saplings and brambles and a gully
with a dumped mattress and a bedstead and an old fridge. And somewhere, presumably, the
crumbling rusty scraps of metal and cloth and … bones?"
"The Red Room" however begins in an old dark castle and you are immediately plunged into the
story with descriptions and introductions happening along the way.

Saved : How Literacy Changed My Life Essay
Saved: How Literacy Changed My Life An astronomer killed my religion. More accurately, reading
an astronomer's carefully chosen and thoughtful words changed my life forever. I was raised in a
strict religious home in my early childhood. Both my parents were Jehovah's Witnesses, and being
the good Witnesses that they were, they often chose to shelter their children from the worldly
influences surrounding them. There were many things in life forbidden to me, many truths locked
away. Unfortunately for my parents, I've always been curious about the world and literacy was my
key. It wasn't until I was 13 years old when I first discovered Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot: A Vision
of the Human Future in Space. Reading Sagan's reflections on the world and humanity ignited
something in me that had been smoldering for a long time; the idea that I did not need religion to
find purpose and meaning in life, rather I must only look within myself. There was no shortage of
reading material in my house, albeit rather limited subject matter. I can remember the leather smell
of books in the hallway, stacked neatly in place on a daunting bookshelf that seemed to stretch
upwards forever from a young child's perspective. On that shelf were titles such as The Greatest
Man Who Ever Lived, You Can Be God's Friend, and A Peaceful New World. There was also the
Bible, of course, and piles of The Watchtower magazines. Most of these books I enjoyed as a child,
each filled with nice pictures of multiracial

By the late eighteenth century, the New World, which was still remote, had formed its own
complicated individual and national identities. Moreover, the disparate communities within Latin
America had established a unique culture characterized by its hybridity. A close reading of Ignacio
de Castro's From Spaniard and Indian, a Mestizo is born and Agostino Brunias's Planter and His
Wife with a Servant reveals the racial hierarchy that formed amid Latin America's hybridity.
Additionally, both objects specifically express Latin American hybridity for a white, European class,
likely as a means to demystify and boost the standing of the New World. Deceivingly similar in

A Good Man By Flannery O ' Connor
Picture this: three children, two parents, a grandmother, and a cat walk into a barbecue joint. This
sounds like the beginning of a hilarious joke; however, it is the start of a devastating family
vacation. Written by Flannery O 'Connor in 1953, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" portrays wrongful
humor and violence through the use of symbolism and imagery. Looking closely at the story one can
see the grandmother's dress, the six gravestones, and the woods, just to name a few, all symbolize
and foreshadow the families inevitable end. In the very beginning of the story, the family is getting
ready for vacation when the grandmother reads a newspaper article about an escaped convict headed
towards the same destination as them, Florida. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her underlying southern manners play a huge roll when the family stops for barbecue and when they
run into The Misfit. Red Sam and The Misfit are alike in many ways. They both put on a front,
trying to show they are proper southern gentlemen. However, neither one came from a proper
wealthy family. Based off of the grandmother's beliefs, they would not be true gentlemen. While
talking to Red Sammy, owner of Red Sammy's Famous Barbecue, the grandmother tells him, he is a
good man and that he should not trust anyone coming in his restaurant and casually brings up The
Misfit once again. This is when Sammy says, "A Good Man is Hard to Find." The grandmother
brings up an interesting story about an old house with a secret panel. This excites the children and
they beg to go see it. Bailey, the father, turns the car around to go in search of it. While on their way
down the gravel road to see the house with the secret panel, the family passes six gravestones. Each
gravestone is marked for one of the six members riding in the vehicle, overall this represents the
family is close to their untimely death. Some people could even argue that the house with the secret
panel represents The Misfit himself. He stops when the family wrecks the car and acts like a
southern gentleman on the exterior, but on the inside he is a ruthless killer. In other words,
underneath his "secret panel" or Southern generosity lies a vicious monster. As they wind and twist

The Photograph, Unknown # 153 By Cindy Sherman Essay
The photograph "Unknown #153" was taken by Cindy Sherman in 1954. The picture is of a
Caucasian woman lying in the grass. She is not completely in the picture, because the parts of her
body visible to the viewer is the area above the collarbone and her right shoulder. Her face, neck and
clothes have handfuls of dirt on them. Her body is flat; she is faced up and her arms are down by her
side. Her face is the center point of the photo yet; she is diagonally in the frame with her body
placed in the bottom right corner of the picture. Her chest is diagonally shown not showing signs of
her breast at all. The bare skin of her chest is barely visible because of how the woman is placed in
the frame. Her hair is an odd silver color and looks sort of like a wig up close. Her hair also makes
her look older but, the lack of wrinkle lines and softer features suggest she is a bit on the younger
side. Her hair is short and stops at the bottom of her ears. The viewer can see half of her right ear
but, the photo does not expose the opening. While on the other hand her left ear is completely
covered by her hair. Her eyebrows are full and appear to have hints of the silver. Her eyes look dark
from afar but up close, they appear to be blue. In her pupils a dot of sun in each eye is noticeable.
She has a round shaped face and the stale expression makes her look as if she could be dead. She is
looking towards the left of the frame. Her head is slightly tilted to the viewer's left although her

Who Is Georges Seurat's A Sunday On La Grande Jatte?
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte
While visiting the Art Institute of Chicago I viewed "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" by Georges
Seurat. "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" is Georges Seurat's best–known and largest painting.
Georges Seurat depicted people relaxing in a suburban park on an island in the Seine River called La
Grande Jatte. It took Seurat almost two years to paint. He began in 1884 with a layer of small
horizontal brushstrokes of complementary colors. He later added small dots, also in complementary
colors, that appear as solid and luminous forms when seen from a distance. This technique is known
as "Pointillism." The painting was painted between 1884 and 1886. The subject of the painting is an

Hopper once said, "unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city." This piece
depicts Hopper as an artist of loneliness shown by the contrast between the dark colors of the night
and the harsh fluorescents lights of the diner. Hopper creates a sense of "Film Noir" with point of
view of the painting and the distance from the viewer to the diner.
Soon after Edward Hopper married his wife Josephine(Jo) in 1924, Hopper and his wife kept a
journal. Edward would sketch his drawling in it with precise details. Jo would then add additional
information. A review of the page on which "Nighthawks" is entered shows (in Edward Hopper's
handwriting) that the intended name of the work was actually "Night Hawks", and that the painting
was completed on January 21, 1942.
Jo's handwritten notes about the painting give considerably more detail, including the interesting
possibility that the painting's evocative title may have had its origins as a reference to the beak–

Tongue Diagnosis : Traditional Chinese Medicine
Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine History Tongue Diagnosis is one of the most
brilliant components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and first appeared in several important
medical texts during the Warring States Period (403 BC –221 BC) including the Yellow Emperor's
Inner Classic, The Classic of Difficulties and The Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia
Medica. (Maciocia,1995). However, the first surviving Chinese medical text to deal exclusively with
tongue examination dates from 1341 during the Yuan or Mongol dynasty. This book was written by
Du Qing–bi and contains 36 color illustrations of the tongue and its fur corresponding to various
patterns of disharmony. (Flaws, 2004) Today, tongue diagnosis is taught in every TCM program
because of its accuracy as a diagnostic tool and the fact that as it is the only muscle in the body not
covered in skin. Therefore, it provides visible clues to the patient's pattern of disease. Due to the
relationship between the tongue and the body, TCM practitioners can get valuable information about
changes in the body and internal organs by observing the tongue. (Maciocia,1995) Physiology of the

Aesthetic Sentiment and Judgement According to David Hume, a great philosopher in 18th century,
"Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them." As a result, "good art" is the
judgement of individual base on their positive sentiment toward an artwork, and that is called the
taste of art. Besides, David Hume also believes there is something will make an artwork better than
others. To experience that belief, after falling in love with two artworks–"A Bull Fight" and "The

art to state that "A Bull Fight" is better artwork than "The Bonaventure Pine" even though both are
beautiful.
The first interesting artwork is "A Bull Fight" by Jacquez Raymond Brascassat (1804–1867), who is
a French artist. "A Bull Fight" is a European art, painted with oil on canvas medium, and published
in 1855. Its dimensions are about 57x75 inches, which show a close ratio to the real objects. This is

rejected by the church on multiple occasions and many people believe that the darkened building
represents his distaste for religion and those who rejected him. It represents his distaste because all
of the other buildings in the village are illuminated, and only this specific and highly regarded
building is left dark. The dead tree on the left hand side of the painting has often been referred to as
the many mental problems that Van Gogh faced throughout his life. The sky and vibrant yellow stars
have also been seen as a symbol for Van Gogh's soul and the vulnerability that he feels towards the
world. When one realises the symbolism in certain paintings and images, like the darkened church,
it can change their feelings related to and from what they was

Personal Narrative: Crystal Water
Who is she? That girl with the long carrot orange hair standing by the brilliant ocean. She seems
loud and confident like the leader of a lion's pack, yet gentle in her words like the angel who visits
you when you need her. She made everyone surrounding me, lying on this rich sand, seem like they
did not exist anymore. She is tall like a king who sits on his golden throne that sparkles like a small
meaningful sun no matter if it is day or night. Like most people, she had two feet, but one was
somehow longer than the other. She had big blue story telling eyes. I felt like I knew her the moment
I saw those dramatic eyes. Her bathing suit was dark green with one big white dot. She stands there
by the water debating if she should gracefully dive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I waited for her to come back up as I expected, but she didn't. I kept waiting and waiting, and I
started to worry. I stood up to get a better view of the crystal water. The bright glare of the sun was
getting in the way of my view. A few moments later she came back up. Even though I could not see
very well I knew she came back up because of her reflection on the clear water of the pale white
skin and the beaming orange hair.
How could I be the only one noticing this mysterious girl? She slowly stepped out of the water
pointing each of her feet with every move. She walked like a princess making an entrance through a
gorgeous grand marble staircase as if she were the most important young lady in the world. Once
she was out of the water, she started to roll around in the itchy sand. How peculiar. She went to a
nice sunny spot on the beach and sat down on the scalding sand like a robot. She gathered piles and
piles of sand and made a magnificent and monumental castle fit for a king. She stood up to look at
this towering creation and nodded her head. She took two small steps closer to her castle and
jumped on it. There were somber piles of sand

Descriptive Essay
I sat in the ivory colored sand by the beach. I felt my toes sink and wiggle in the wet sand. The
crystal blue water washed over my toes. It was a beautiful sunny day with a gentle breeze. Waves
were crashing on the rocks, and the sun made the ocean glitter as if someone poured a bucket of
sparkles into the water. You could hear the distant calls of seagulls every now and then. Obsidian
colored cliffs were so high that they looked as if they were going to touch the pale blue sky. I felt
something brush up against my ankles as a small tide came in. I looked down to see what the ocean
brought to me. It was a green glass bottle and inside was some paper rolled up neatly. "I wonder
what it could be," I wondered. I was hesitant to look inside, but my curiosity got the better of me
and before I knew it my fingers were reaching into the tiny opening of the bottle. I slowly pulled out
the slightly wet cream colored paper. I was careful not to rip it. I unraveled it and let it rest in my
lap. The ink was blue, but the water had stained it in places. Splotches of ink were here and there. I
looked closer at the words. "I wish I knew what this said," I thought, slightly perplexed as to what
this cryptic language that had floated on the shore was. I put it in my picnic basket, packed up my
other belongings, and headed back to my home by the edge of one of the cliffs. It overlooked the
ocean, and the ocean was all I knew. I walked up to the doorstep and was greeted by the robot who

The Pale Blue Dot
As we often disregard or remain ignorant to our inadvertent or purposeful killing of our planet, Carl
Sagan gives us a lesson in humility and a reminder of our folly and obscurity as humans. The "Pale
Blue Dot" is where our species has lived forever, where we fritter our time away on things that in
retrospect were quite inane or detrimental, but made perfect sense at the time. War and overheating
of our planet––we do a lot of unscrupulous things it seems, although in the end, in the grand scheme
of the universe it's all pointless. To those on Earth everything happening on our planet is relative.
We are conceited, thinking we are at the center of the universe, as if everything revolves around us,
lured into a false sense of security that we are special and help ... Show more content on

Images of the way we embellished our planet with innovation, love and courage were juxtaposed
with images of the blood, scars, and destruction we also paint our planet with. This video made me
wonder how humans will proceed in the future with the issue of climate change. Will we come to
our senses and mitigate the damage caused by our wrongdoings to our only home? Or will we
continue to display the human race as a contradictory race, one that is conceited and yet will be its
own downfall? I believe Sagan made this video to encourage us to look at all the things humans
have done in the past and remind us that we may be the generation that continues or exterminates
our existence and renders all efforts and history void. He probably wanted to remind us of our small,
unimportant world and how it's our duty to protect and sustain life on it since it is the only life we
know. We are encouraged to humble ourselves because we are not the center of the universe, and
there's no one out there to pity or remember the parasitic human race. At the moment our future
seems

The Pale Blue Dot, By Joel Achenbach

  • 1. The Pale Blue Dot, By Joel Achenbach People often think about how vast, or how important the Earth is, it is the domain of the human race. Where they strive to be the best, compete against others, world powers against another. But, in the vast reality of the cosmos, the Earth, is nothing more than a tiny little "pale blue dot." Described none other than Carl Sagan, "The Pale Blue Dot," reveals the scary reality about the placement of the human race in the "enveloping cosmic dark." In his quote, Sagan uses pathos and logos about this reality, opening a deeper understanding that beyond the planet Earth, humans are nothing more than insignificant. He has revolutionized the way that people view our home, and the cosmos around it. Joel Achenbach starts his Smithsonian article ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also took advantage of the gravitational pull of these reducing the time and fuel to travel through the solar system, it was like a sling–shot effect. The Voyager satellites were launched in 1977, Voyager I mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn, and Voyager II, Uranus and Neptune. The mission brought back stunning evidence that the people behind the mission didn't anticipate for. Io, for example, was the discovered to have massive geological activity (the only other orbiting object besides Earth). The Voyager's recorded nine eruptions during their brief orbit (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, News and Archives). In Carl Sagan's show, Cosmos, he mentions that Voyager captured lightning on the dark side of Jupiter (Sagan Ep. 1). This is just one example of many scientific break throughs that the Voyagers have documented. Even up to 2012, mission control is still receiving signals from the Voyager satellites, as of August 25th, 2012, Voyager I surpassed the heliopause of the solar system (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, News and Archives). Once the Voyagers completed their primary mission of encountering the outer gas giants, "as Voyager I was heading toward the outer reaches of the solar system, Sagan was among those who persuaded NASA to aim the spacecraft's camera back toward Earth, by then billions of miles away." ... • 3. Dot's Donut Shop: A Short Story Despite it's location, Dot's Donut Shop was about to get famous. All because of a fifteen year old girl named Larissa Summer. Now don't get me wrong. Larissa was about the same as any average teenage girl. She loved to text her best friend about the cute boy in their Biology class, wear makeup, fix her hair and dress in the latest fashion. But one of the things Larissa did displeased her friends. Larissa liked to help Mr. and Mrs. Dot run their donut shop every morning before school. Larissa's friends didn't think it was cool to help old people run a diminishing donut shop. Dot's Donut shop was in the run down part of town. "You might be overthinking this just a bit. How long have you been working on this donut now? A month?" Larissa nodded her head slowly. Mr. Dot continued,"And have you been making it how you think you would like it, or how the world would like it?" Larissa stood there deep in thought. What had she been doing? Hadn't she been making a donut that people would like, or had she been focusing too much on herself and how perfect the donut should be to her? Larissa glanced at the Dots. "I guess I was thinking too much about myself and not much about everyone else," admitted Larissa. "I'm going to go and try again!" "Atta girl Larissa!" exclaimed Mr. Dot. "You can do it!" Larissa marched back into the shop's kitchen and went back to work. This time, she focused on making a donut that others would enjoy, not just herself. Larissa mixed up a chocolate cake batter donut, and filled it with a fluffy, white, sweet filling. Then Larissa whipped up a heavy chocolate glaze to cover the delicious donut in. The glaze bubbled and simmered on the stove until it was nice and gooey. Larissa dipped the donut into the glaze then set it aside to let it harden. After the glaze had hardened, Larissa covered the top of the donut in a white frosting. For the finishing touch, Larissa shaved some milk chocolate and some white chocolate off of big blocks. Then she sprinkled the shavings over the delicacy of a donut. Now it was finished. Larissa excitedly scurried out of the kitchen to show the Dot's her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main conflict of the movie was a disagreement between business expansion and environmental protection. The story is set in the small town of Coconut Cove, Florida, where almost the entire town is excited for a new pancake house named Mother Paula's. But what the public does not know is that there is an endangered species of owls living in burrows right where the pancake house is meant to be built. The areas that are being considered are home to enough oil to last the country for 200 years, coal for 250 years, and natural gas for 120 years (McClatchy). If utilized, these natural resources would help to boost the economy, and reduce domestic prices of oil and petroleum based commodities including but not limited to; ink, nylon rope, dyes, crayons, deodorant, trash bags, shoes, and petrol. Not only would the price of physical goods decrease, but also the price of energy, as most of it is created by burning fossil fuels. Along with having a large effect on the economy, the expansion of the oil industry would create an opportunity for employment for many citizens. According to a study conducted by Wood Mackenzie, opening these lands to drilling both onshore and offshore, would create approximately half of a million jobs (McClatchy). The new workers would receive a large salary and this in turn would boost the economy. In 2011, the average salary for rig workers and other industry personnel was $99,175 (Hargreaves). If half of a million employees earned the average wage, it would put $49,587,500,000 into the hands of the consumers on an annual basis. To achieve this vision, the government would need to lift its current restrictions on oil drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, the Florida Gulf Coast, and almost all ... • 11. The Color Blue Essay and green. Blue as discussed earlier was represented as the color of the God and other religious concepts, so the major incorporation of the color blue in the reliquary chasse indicated the spiritual significance it carried. Envisioning blue on the chasse unified people to Jesus Christ. Many of the reliquary chasse of the 12th century narrated a story; this individual one narrates the crucifixion of Christ. There are several key figures engraved throughout the exterior of the chasse, however since the crucial scene of the execution are shown on the front face of the chasse, that indicates that this chasse was primarily to be seen from the front rather than the sides. If viewed from the front, the top has three figures designed on it. In the center is the God the Father and on his either sides are two unknown saints. All three figures are represented in mandorlas however in different colors. The God of Father is displayed in the blue mandorla while the saints are shown in green mandorla. Here we can interpret a sense of hierarchy because the God of Father is shown in blue, which represents a divine color, however the saints are represented in green that is a mix of blue and yellow. So, blue still exists and represents divinity, yet the mixture of blue and yellow to produce a different shade of blue signifies that the God of Father is above and more important than the saints. Yayoi Kusama's Rtistic Identity I first became attracted to Yayoi Kusama's work when I came upon a 1966 photograph of Kusama modeling on her own installation with painted dots covering her body. The photograph communicated what seemed to be a special message that fascinated me; I was curious about what symbolism the polka dots express and what connotations Kusama was intending to reveal by painting repetitive tessellations. I was instantly drawn to the manner in which Kusama dresses in the fashion of her own endless imagination; it seemed that Kusama's body and art have merged into one creative entity, softening the variance between the artist and the art piece. In short, the photograph inspired me in discovering Kusuma's history, analyzing her art pieces, and contemplating my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By analyzing the history of Kusama, a fundamental explanation or motive for the themes of Kusama's art can be gleaned. Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan during a tumultuous time of economic crises. The Japanese population was extremely oppressed by the Japanese military as the Great Depression reached Japan. Kusama began to express enthusiasm in making art as she began exhibiting her work in her teens; however, her family was not supportive of her interest and tried to influence her towards a conventional path of becoming a traditional Japanese housewife. Kusama's relationship with her family, and especially the relationship with her mother, was a contributing factor to her anger against any kind of political and social oppression. Kusama's mother was a disciplinarian figure in the family and tried to force her daughter to follow traditional gender roles, which disregarded Kusama's aspiration of professionally pursuing art. However, Kusama's creative ambitions were not curtailed by her family's conflicting interests or the demanding work called upon her following the outbreak of World War Two. ... A Day with Eutopia "Can you imagine, loving a man so greatly, so completely, that you would surrender everything you have just to be near him, just to have him near you" (Crawford, A Woman 's Face). I know what it 's like to love someone this much, but in my case, it was not a romantic type of love. My two older sisters Madeline and Paige were adopted out into a Mormon family when Madeline was three years old, and Paige was eight months old. At the age of twelve, I discovered Paige while stalking her adoptive sister Haley on YouTube. Her chocolate brown curly hair was pinned back with a white bow; she wore a plain gray T–shirt and light blue jeans. She had pale freckled skin and rosy cheeks. There are many differences and similarities between the Inner and Outer planets. Our solar system is comprised of the Sun being in the middle, then followed by planets rotating it. The planets which orbit the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The Inner planets are very different from Outer planets and the Outer planets are completely different from Inner planets, but both are very similar in many ways. Our planets in the solar system have many similarities and differences. First of all, Inner planets are different from Outer planets in many ways. The surface of Inner planets compared to Outer planets are rocky, Inner planets are denser, all the Inner planets are in the asteroid belt. "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us –– there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries."–Carl Sagan. There is nothing more than what there is. The surface of the Inner planets is very different from those of the Outer planets because, Earth compared to Uranus is completely different due to Uranus being mostly made out of gas. The Inner planets are also much denser than Outer planets. For example, Venus ' average density is 5.24g/cm3 as opposed to Neptune which is 1.33g/cm3. Lastly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pale Blue Dot Carl Sagan extravagantly uses syntax, diction, and rhetorical devices in his essay "Pale Blue Dot" to describe how planet earth is just one small speck in the vast unknown area of outer space, and how we as people could be classified as insignificant to the rest of the solar system. Within the story, Sagan used astonishing examples of syntax to get the reader thinking, not only about the essay itself, but about the bigger picture. Near the end of the essay Sagan described how we have explored the wide array of planets in space, but have not settled on any by saying, ¨ Visit, yes. Settle, no ¨(Sagan 4 of 5). This use of short sentences impacts the reader and really catches their attention. Carl Sagan's book The Demon–Haunted World covers why people think the way they do about paranormal claims, UFO's, and pseudoscience. Sagan demonstrates that the pattern of thinking uncritically is not limited to fringe claims, but is practiced throughout society to its detriment. Carl Sagan argues that it is critical that people change their habits "But if we don 't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us – and we risk becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along" (Sagan 38). Peter Barton Hutt and Gregory Frantz argue that corporations have abused the critical faculties of Americans to promote a lifestyle of consumption and conformity to social spending: "In other words, the same human propensity for uncritical thought and conformity that has historically been exploited by religions and governments is today being capitalized upon by corporations to promote consumerism" (Hutt 83). Their position is reinforced by Sagan writing, throughout the book, that it is often profitable to those who provide the beliefs for others and it is in their best interests to discourage individual thoughts. It originates from New Zealand as the name implies and has spread extensively throughout Europe. It was first recorded in Northern Ireland in 1963. In 1963 it was looked upon as a novelty in gardens around belfast and was not seen as a pest that could in the future potentially do detrimental damage to agricultural land. In 1983 scientists discovered that these flatworms were preying on our native types of earthworms, and drastic falls in their numbers were seen in areas where the NewZealand Flatworms were abundant. Earth Worms play a huge beneficial role in Irish Agriculture land and gardens by improving drainage, aerating soil, mixing the soil structure and decomposing material, when they are preyed apon by the New Zealand Flatworm they can completely disappear in severe cases and in those areas the land can become water logged and as a result growth of plants suffer and the whole ecosystem is effected . • 42. Negative Effects Of Color Blindness Throughout World War II, it was found that analysis reports of aerial photographs were more accurate when at least one member of the group of analyzers was colorblind. Color blindness is a vision deficiency disorder, in which the eye becomes more or less sensitive to color. This is the result of the malfunctioning, or lack, of special cone cells in the eye. Although color blindness may seem beneficial in a situation similar to war, most people with color blindness find it to be a disruption to everyday activities, and sometimes even a danger to themselves or people around them. There are many significantly differentiating types of color blindness that can be characterized with varying symptoms; however, many people do not even realize they have a vision deficiency disorder, which is why color blindness is difficult to diagnose. Overall, many humans carry a disorder that affects their vision of the world, but few have been diagnosed, and even fewer choose to accept help despite the diagnosis of their disorder (Colour Blind Awareness, Color Blindness). Color blindness can be inherited in a variety of ways. This disorder can be genetically inherited through sex–linked genes, or autosomal recessive genes, from two parent cells to a zygote. In these cases, the infant would be born with color blindness, although the severity of the disorder could possibly change with age. Color blindness may also be acquired, so a person may not become color blind until later in life. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a constituent of all living tissues; almost all plants and animals, including all humans, require oxygen, in the free or combined state, to maintain life.3 Three structural forms of oxygen are known: ordinary oxygen, containing two atoms per molecule, formula O2; ozone, containing three atoms per molecule, formula O3; and a pale blue, nonmagnetic form, O4, containing four atoms per molecule, which readily breaks down into ordinary oxygen. Three stable isotopes of oxygen are known; oxygen–16 (atomic mass 16) is the most abundant. It comprises 99.76 percent of ordinary oxygen and was used in determination of atomic weights until the 1960s. Oxygen is prepared in the laboratory from salts such as potassium chlorate, barium peroxide, and sodium peroxide. The most important industrial methods for the preparation of oxygen are the electrolysis of water and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wells and The Darkness Out There by Penelope Lively The "Red Room" was the earlier of the two stories written in 1896 by H.G. Wells and "The Darkness Out There", written by Penelope Lively was published in1984. The titles of both stories suggest that fear or horror will play a part. "The Darkness Out There" generates an eerie feeling by not defining a specific threat but leaving it open to the imagination. "The Red Room" is not as scary but the use of red often shows danger or fear and this is why it has been used here. H.G. • 52. Saved : How Literacy Changed My Life Essay Saved: How Literacy Changed My Life An astronomer killed my religion. More accurately, reading an astronomer's carefully chosen and thoughtful words changed my life forever. I was raised in a strict religious home in my early childhood. Both my parents were Jehovah's Witnesses, and being the good Witnesses that they were, they often chose to shelter their children from the worldly influences surrounding them. There were many things in life forbidden to me, many truths locked away. Unfortunately for my parents, I've always been curious about the world and literacy was my key. It wasn't until I was 13 years old when I first discovered Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space. Reading Sagan's reflections on the world and humanity ignited something in me that had been smoldering for a long time; the idea that I did not need religion to find purpose and meaning in life, rather I must only look within myself. There was no shortage of reading material in my house, albeit rather limited subject matter. I can remember the leather smell of books in the hallway, stacked neatly in place on a daunting bookshelf that seemed to stretch upwards forever from a young child's perspective. On that shelf were titles such as The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived, You Can Be God's Friend, and A Peaceful New World. There was also the Bible, of course, and piles of The Watchtower magazines. Most of these books I enjoyed as a child, each filled with nice pictures of multiracial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Moreover, the disparate communities within Latin America had established a unique culture characterized by its hybridity. A close reading of Ignacio de Castro's From Spaniard and Indian, a Mestizo is born and Agostino Brunias's Planter and His Wife with a Servant reveals the racial hierarchy that formed amid Latin America's hybridity. Additionally, both objects specifically express Latin American hybridity for a white, European class, likely as a means to demystify and boost the standing of the New World. • 56. A Good Man By Flannery O ' Connor Picture this: three children, two parents, a grandmother, and a cat walk into a barbecue joint. This sounds like the beginning of a hilarious joke; however, it is the start of a devastating family vacation. Written by Flannery O 'Connor in 1953, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" portrays wrongful humor and violence through the use of symbolism and imagery. Looking closely at the story one can see the grandmother's dress, the six gravestones, and the woods, just to name a few, all symbolize and foreshadow the families inevitable end. In the very beginning of the story, the family is getting ready for vacation when the grandmother reads a newspaper article about an escaped convict headed towards the same destination as them, Florida. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her underlying southern manners play a huge roll when the family stops for barbecue and when they run into The Misfit. Red Sam and The Misfit are alike in many ways. They both put on a front, trying to show they are proper southern gentlemen. However, neither one came from a proper wealthy family. Based off of the grandmother's beliefs, they would not be true gentlemen. While talking to Red Sammy, owner of Red Sammy's Famous Barbecue, the grandmother tells him, he is a good man and that he should not trust anyone coming in his restaurant and casually brings up The Misfit once again. This is when Sammy says, "A Good Man is Hard to Find." The grandmother brings up an interesting story about an old house with a secret panel. This excites the children and they beg to go see it. Bailey, the father, turns the car around to go in search of it. While on their way down the gravel road to see the house with the secret panel, the family passes six gravestones. Each gravestone is marked for one of the six members riding in the vehicle, overall this represents the family is close to their untimely death. Some people could even argue that the house with the secret panel represents The Misfit himself. He stops when the family wrecks the car and acts like a southern gentleman on the exterior, but on the inside he is a ruthless killer. In other words, underneath his "secret panel" or Southern generosity lies a vicious monster. As they wind and twist down the road ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She is not completely in the picture, because the parts of her body visible to the viewer is the area above the collarbone and her right shoulder. Her face, neck and clothes have handfuls of dirt on them. Her body is flat; she is faced up and her arms are down by her side. Her face is the center point of the photo yet; she is diagonally in the frame with her body placed in the bottom right corner of the picture. Her chest is diagonally shown not showing signs of her breast at all. The bare skin of her chest is barely visible because of how the woman is placed in the frame. Her hair is an odd silver color and looks sort of like a wig up close. Her hair also makes her look older but, the lack of wrinkle lines and softer features suggest she is a bit on the younger side. Her hair is short and stops at the bottom of her ears. The viewer can see half of her right ear but, the photo does not expose the opening. While on the other hand her left ear is completely covered by her hair. Her eyebrows are full and appear to have hints of the silver. Her eyes look dark from afar but up close, they appear to be blue. In her pupils a dot of sun in each eye is noticeable. This is a passage from his book, Pale Blue Dot. It was inspired by a series of photographs he had requested NASA take using the Voyager 1 spacecraft. It was the first ever portrait of our solar system capturing Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Venus and Earth. The images were the last photos take by Voyager. "Look again at that dot. That 's here. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte While visiting the Art Institute of Chicago I viewed "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat. "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" is Georges Seurat's best–known and largest painting. Georges Seurat depicted people relaxing in a suburban park on an island in the Seine River called La Grande Jatte. It took Seurat almost two years to paint. He began in 1884 with a layer of small horizontal brushstrokes of complementary colors. He later added small dots, also in complementary colors, that appear as solid and luminous forms when seen from a distance. This technique is known as "Pointillism." The painting was painted between 1884 and 1886. The subject of the painting is an island newly adopted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon after Edward Hopper married his wife Josephine(Jo) in 1924, Hopper and his wife kept a journal. Edward would sketch his drawling in it with precise details. Jo would then add additional information. A review of the page on which "Nighthawks" is entered shows (in Edward Hopper's handwriting) that the intended name of the work was actually "Night Hawks", and that the painting was completed on January 21, 1942. Tongue Diagnosis : Traditional Chinese Medicine Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine History Tongue Diagnosis is one of the most brilliant components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and first appeared in several important medical texts during the Warring States Period (403 BC –221 BC) including the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic, The Classic of Difficulties and The Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica. Therefore, it provides visible clues to the patient's pattern of disease. Due to the relationship between the tongue and the body, TCM practitioners can get valuable information about changes in the body and internal organs by observing the tongue. Van Gogh was rejected by the church on multiple occasions and many people believe that the darkened building represents his distaste for religion and those who rejected him. It represents his distaste because all of the other buildings in the village are illuminated, and only this specific and highly regarded building is left dark. It was a beautiful sunny day with a gentle breeze. Waves were crashing on the rocks, and the sun made the ocean glitter as if someone poured a bucket of sparkles into the water. You could hear the distant calls of seagulls every now and then. Obsidian colored cliffs were so high that they looked as if they were going to touch the pale blue sky. I felt something brush up against my ankles as a small tide came in. I looked down to see what the ocean brought to me. It was a green glass bottle and inside was some paper rolled up neatly. I believe Sagan made this video to encourage us to look at all the things humans have done in the past and remind us that we may be the generation that continues or exterminates our existence and renders all efforts and history void.
