Statistics and Decision-Making in Hrm
STATISTICS AND DECISION–MAKING IN HRM
(word count 1155)
The word statistics has a Latin origin where the word status means state. Statistics is defined as the
science that helps us understand how to collect, organize and interpret numbers or other information
(data) about some topic (Bennett, et al., 2003). It is a discipline of data collection and summarizing
to aid understanding and decision–making. It is also concerned with evaluation of the present status
and predicting the future (Stockberger, 1996). Statistics studies the nature of a relationship between
two or more variables of interest by using the numerical statistical data. Moreover only statistics
makes it possible to analyze these relationships (Kachigan, 1986).

From the company management perspective statistics help managers to convert data into
information which enables to accept informed decisions (Levin and Rubin, 1997). Thus statistics
helps to manage the organizational functions in a company. Such management science procedures as
project evaluation and review techniques and critical path method help to control and plan not only
company projects and initiatives but take adequate people related decisions belonging to the
functional area of Human Resource Management. HRM function involves activities such as
recruitment, training, performance assessment, reward and motivation. Productivity of these
activities to a great extent is predetermined by the wide use of statistical tools. By using statistics,
HR forecasts the needs in terms of required number of employees and their level of qualification.
For the recruitment of new staff the tests are conducted to assess the candidates on merit basis.
Validity of various HR tests can be assessed by means of statistical tools. Statistical analysis of test
results helps to reveal deficiencies in employee training programs and to assess the compensation
program to determine whether they are reliable and support the organisation's performance
objectives. Regular employee performance appraisals based on statistical methods are important for
making HR decisions regarding compensation and promotion.

Teaching Reading Comprehension
Introduction
What is reading? Reading is about understanding written texts. It is a complex activity that involves
both perception and thought. Reading consists of two related processes: word recognition and
comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how written symbols
correspond to one's spoken language. Comprehension is the process of making sense of words,
sentences and connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary,
grammatical knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written
text.
Researchs and classroom practices support the use of a balanced approach in teaching reading
comprehension. Because reading comprehension depends on efficient ... Show more content on

A person may also read for enjoyment, or to enhance knowledge of the language being read. The
purpose(s) for reading guide the reader 's selection of texts.
The purpose for reading also determines the appropriate approach to reading comprehension. A
person who needs to know whether she can afford to eat at a particular restaurant needs to
comprehend the pricing information provided on the menu, but does not need to recognize the name
of every appetizer listed. A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the words the
poet uses and the ways they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and supporting
details. However, a person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know the
vocabulary that is used, understand the facts and cause–effect sequences that are presented, and
recognize ideas that are presented as hypotheses and givens.
Reading research shows that good readers
· Read extensively
· Integrate information in the text with existing knowledge
· Have a flexible reading style, depending on what they are reading
· Are motivated
· Rely on different skills interacting: perceptual processing, phonemic processing, recall
· Read for a purpose; reading serves a function
Reading as a Process
Historically, listening and reading skills have received less attention in language teaching than have

Design and Culture
Design and Culture Abstract: Uses "Design" in a different way; but one must add that a universal
language is being constructed daily. design is understood here as a phenomenon which affects
everybody. design is characterized by a dual alliance with both mass production and mass
consumption and that these two phenomena have determined nearly all its manifestations .Industry
unconsciously evolved its own aesthetic, and this aesthetic was from the beginning one which
intelligent designers, whatever their background, tried to obey .
Key Words:
Culture,aesthetic,imperfect,confidence
Now that "Design" is understood from Tokyo to Moscow, from Buenos Aires to
Montreal, it is obvious that each country according ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Janus, design looks in tow directions at the same time: as a silent quality of all mass–produced
goods it plays a generally unacknowledged but vital role in all our lives; as a named concept within
the mass media, it is, however, much more visible and generally recognized. In this latter guise
design becomes an extension of marketing and advertising. The "designer–jeans" phenomenon,
which persuades us to buy a product because it has been designed, is, culturally speaking, totally
distinct from the activity of the anonymous designers within industry who resolve the problems of
cost, appearance and use in consumer products. The way in which design as an adjunct of marketing
has grown out of design as an aspect of mass production is a major theme within the story of modem
design and the focus of this book. It is a change which directly mirrors the way in which the model
of mass–production industry, as presented by Henry Ford, which dominated American ideas about
industrial organization in the early twentieth century, has been challenged by an alternative model
which stresses batch production, a smaller scale of operations (or set of operations), and, at times, a
fair amount of

Symbolic Interaction Perspective On Deviance As Applied In...
This paper compares and contrasts three different analyses on deviance as applied in social science.
It begins by defining what deviance means in respect to societal norms, then goes ahead to expound
on symbolic interaction, social conflict, and finally the functional, perspectives on deviance. The
paper then zeroes in on the social conflict perspective and its influence in dispute resolution in
societal disagreements. In analyzing the social conflict theory, the position held by the paper
contradicts this school of thought by arguing for a capitalist approach to work that rewards hard
work individually, and concludes by advancing the course of dialogue as a remedy to disputes
between societal citizens.
Deviance
Social science describes deviance as an act or trait that runs contrary to acceptable norms in a
society, whether in formal or informal settings. Deviance may be clustered as any acts or violations
that run parallel with values and rules of an established social system. The unacceptable trait could
well be beyond agreeable limits set by society. Rubington and Weinberg
(2015), explain that deviance is relative and subject to place and time since a deviance in one setting
cannot be categorized as such in a different perspective. In sociology, deviant actions will differ
from place to place depending on the societal norms attributable to each community.
Symbolic Interaction Perspective on Deviance

ETHICAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS 2 Company Q is a small local grocery store chain that has a poor
attitude toward social responsibility. After reviewing the given, I feel the chain is more committed to
profit than social responsibility. Most companies are in a business to make a profit, however, the
difference in what is considered reasonable and what is considered ridiculous comes into play. Most
people start companies because it something they are interested in and to make a living. In today's

If I were a company I would never want to advertise that those are the types of employees I have, it
would be a management issue and not a community problem. Company Q missed a few
opportunities to improve their attitude toward social responsibility. The first is closing the stores.
The areas where the stores closed were in high–crime–rate areas, before
ETHICAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS 3 closing the stores they could have done community outreach
or service projects to help lower the rate of crime. They could have led the establishment of a
neighborhood crime watch. They could have set up a mentorship program for teens at risk. There are
a multitude of programs they could have implemented, some could probably have been used as a tax
write off. If all of these efforts failed then I understand closing the stores. If they had to close the
stores they should have made every effort to be sure that the displaced employees were able to find a
job in another store or assisted them in being placed in another job. They also need to make every
attempt to keep the building they were using occupied or cleaned up until it is occupied. How do
these actions contribute to being socially responsible? It shows they care about their community,
that even though they may have to shut down a store, they still

Imagine being a rabbit; a vertebrate and warm blooded species. Hopping around an open field and

contrary, it does not support all animal rights; the law ought to emphasis those out in business too.
Beyond that, in 1976 adjustments were made in the amendment. In fact, this time it includes more
steps to those companies in the animal testing business (Donna 16). Each corporation is required to
register and keep records of the species. Again it had affected those who are employed in auctions,
operators, dealers, and exhibitors to be certified. Thus certified employees must submit an annual
report to congress. The reports helped the Congressmen keep track of the species; so living things
would not be mistreated. Moreover the act expanded dogs' safety. Hounds were only acceptable for
breeders, security, hunting, and as house hold pets. But there is a catch to it; dog owners must
provide treatments (Donna 8). Signifying hounds would receive yearly check up on their satiability
of well nutrients. However the act was expanding, it excluded most of the rights towards animals. In
addition to the amendment, in 1985 it was re–modified again. It incorporated the labs and the
environment of the organisms. "The act demanded laboratories to provide exercise and a physical
environment, to balance the pain and stress for the species, and minimize the use of drugs" (Donna

Data Issues
Data issues are the most common problem in analytics. In this case, there are many sources of data,
which inconsistency data is one of the possible issues. There are also other problem might occur for
this situation, such as duplication records, missing data, unstandardized data, misspelled or multiple
spelling in the data.
Furthermore, there are several variables or student information that will take some time to analyse
which are, Information on why they want to study overseas and Other data points related to their
attitude to international education. It is because; the response of the student for this information can
be very subjective and quite troublesome to quantify or to group it.
Segmentation or Model Issues
The student segmentation and the classification model can be outdated over time. The behaviour of
the students or prospective students change or maybe the job markets have shifted will make the
models outdated. To avoid segmentation or model become obsolete, the data and the algorithm must
be updated over time.
We might have created segments that are not meaningfully different from each other. The
segmentation should produce segments that are similar characteristics within the group and different
characteristics across groups.

Government, Regulation & Business Ethics
Government, Regulation & Business Ethics
The issue of business relations with government has increasingly become a key issue of business
ethics. Some of the many questions raised are * Is it acceptable for corporations to use their
considerable power tp shape government policy? * Is the government jeopardizing its role in
protecting the public interest when politicians sit on the board of corporations?
The government has a crucial role to play in establishing the 'rules of the game' by which we judge
business ethics.
When we talk about the government, we know that the government is involved in issuing laws
related to business practices. Business ethics tend to begin where the law ends. This means that the

of occupying a dual role in business & ethics is somewhat questionable. On one hand, one
could argue that it has certain advantagesif politicians have had the experience of the business world
and vice versa. On the other hand, there are also quite significant ethical problems linked to the
close amalgamation of business and politics. Eg. German ex–chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was
criticized for taking up an appointment as Chair of the Germa–Russian company, in charge of the
new gas pipeling through the Baltic Sea. This deal was negotiated in th final months of his term in
office. It makes obvious the problems that can arise when we have politcians who are entitled to set
the rules of the economic game also acting as players in the game.

Overview
The mind – body connection can be seen as a point of balance between one's mind and their body; it
is the point at which the mind and the body are at equilibrium. "There should be a comprehensive
approach for both mind and body. This reciprocal relationship maximizes health benefits, and has

The Philosophical Perspective The mind–body connection alludes to the affinity between the mind
and body, specifically in matters of health and well–being. It is founded on the notion that an
individual 's thoughts and emotions affect the body, as do social and behavioral factors. "A strong
and healthy body is believed to have a positive effect on the mind, and a positive mind
correspondingly allows for a healthy strong body" (Clarke, 2001). A philosophical perspective of the
mind and body affiliation provides added insight into the various schools of thought regarding the
ways in which our minds and our bodies interact. While some 'dualist '–based philosophies suggest
that the mind is an entity completely independent of the body and vice versa, 'monoist ' viewpoints
propose that the mind and the body are a part of a single being and thus function as one unit
accomplishing different objectives. One such stance is the philosophical theory of behaviorism,
which holds that "being in a mental state is the same as being in a physical state. In other words,
since all that we can know about another person 's state of mind is through their behavior, there is
nothing else" (Gatis, 2003). Thus the way one thinks has a direct impact on the way the body
functions. For example, if an individual were to say, "I am

Psychology : A Profession And A Science
Psychology is both a profession and a science. As a profession, it is concerned with foreseeing how
individuals will act, helping individuals to modify their behaviour and helping associations, groups
and societies change. Then again as a science psychology is the investigation of how individuals see
(Super & Super, 2009). A percentage of the psychological professions include clinical psychology,
counseling psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, social psychology etc. (Keether &

I have decided to pursue with MSc. forensic psychology after my undergraduate degree. Forensic
psychology is that piece of psychiatry, which manages patients and issues at the interface of the
legitimate and psychiatric frameworks (Towl, Farrington, Crighton & Hughes, 2008). The vast
majority of the psychology professions fall into the chartered areas. Chartered refers to an
evaluation of membership of the British psychological society (BPS). The general public is
approved to give that title by its royal charter. It is conceded to psychologists who have attained and
maintained proficient capabilities and experience, which have been reviewed by the general public.

Abstract
This paper explores related research in aspects of language acquisition, specifically, reading
instruction and its effect on students who live in low socioeconomic environments. We will review
the methods of explicit phonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more
advantageous method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this
literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading instruction on the literacy
development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed
was collected from peer review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers
Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from EBSCOhost Education
Research Complete and JSTOR: Journal Storage. Given the findings of this literature review,
research suggests that explicit phonics instruction, when embedded in a whole language classroom,
promotes growth in literacy skills among young children. Research suggests that multisensory
phonics, based on Orton–Gillingham Approach, promotes literacy growth for students who are at–
risk, however, its impact within a whole language classroom are undetermined. This literature
review suggests that multisensory phonics should be utilized in a whole language classroom to
determine if its use promotes growth in

Forensic Psychology And The Human Mind And Its Functions
Psychology and law at first glance are not two terms that seem to correspond with each other. One
might even question why they would be mentioned in the same context. Crime has become a major
issue within today's society. It seems as though the only way to prevent most of them is to enforce
the repercussions of the act and punish those that partake in it. Criminals often have motives or
attributes that lead them into a life of crime. Forensic psychology is the cynosure that brings the
association between psychology and law into perspective.
The term forensic is defined by The Oxford English Dictionary as, "Relating to or denoting the
application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of crime." Psychology is
defined as, "The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting
behaviour in a given context and the mental characteristics or attitude of a person or group (OED)."
These terms combined form one of the newest subfields of psychology. The main objective of
forensic psychology is to aid in the punishment and prevention process of criminal and civil
investigations.
As the field continues to expand, a plethora of careers and opportunities have and are becoming
available. Of course, with anything new and/or unfamiliar, there is question of credibility and moral.
Since law is a major component involved in this subfield of psychology; the ethics involved in the
practice must also be considered. In order to fully understand

Exploring Psychology Careers Everyone who decides to enroll in college must, at some point, think
about what area they want to major in. There are many things that students consider when choosing
a major. Some make their decision based on what they think can make them the most money once
they begin their lives in the work force. However, many students believe that if you choose a major
that interests you and challenges you then you can use those skills that can help you in any career.
(R. Landrum & S. Davis, 2014) Let's face it. Employers know that when they hire someone straight
out of college they are not immediately going to know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the American Psychological Association (APA) website "Psychologists who provide
clinical or counseling services assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They

simplest terms, "the study of individuals, by observation or experimentation, with the intention of
promoting change." (Compas, Bruce, & Gotlib, 2002) Clinical psychologist careers vary in
industries such as research, integrated health care, teaching, public policy and professional practice.
Some clinical psychologists work exclusively on specific mental, emotional, and behavioral issues.
Relationship conflict and conditions such as post–traumatic stress disorder and addiction are a few
examples of areas of specialization for a clinical psychologist. According to the APA website (2014),
in order to become a clinical psychologist the journey begins with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Next the student must obtain a graduate degree. Each graduate program determines its own entrance
requirements. Some doctoral programs require their applicants to have a master's degree in
psychology. Other people enter doctoral programs with only a bachelor's degree. Most doctoral
degrees take five to seven years to complete. You must also

Discursive Practices and Gendered Reflections of Its Use
Introduction
The following theoretical framework is divided in five sections. The first one deals with the
background to the study where a classification of research studies is done in terms of the way that
language and discourse have been researched. The second part reflects the issue of gender in applied
linguistics. The third tackles some key conceptualizations of literacy in terms of the research study.
The fourth aims to explain how writing is undertaken to fulfill a brief description of the basis that
underlies the study. Within it, it is explained the write–to–learn perspective that is the scope of the
investigation.
Background to the study
Bucholtz (2003) asserts that discourse is language in context. Discourse enables establishing the
existing relationship between language and gender within a given context. Then, discourse becomes
the materialization of such a relationship. That is why discourse analysis has become one of the
most outstanding methodologies to unravel gender issues within the EFL classroom.
The foci of these studies have been the way the discursive practices are used and what gendered
reflections this use shows. Some of these studies stress discourse as an anthropological tradition
(Bucholtz, 2003). This point of view highlights how language is used in the cultural practices of the
human beings. It also cares for the existing differences between men and women; but most
importantly the closed relationship between culture and language use Explain

The Future Major And Potential Minors
In the past three weeks, I interviewed three full–time faculty members across three different
disciplines. The primary goals of this assignment were to explore a variety of disciplines in order to
better understand your future major and potential minors and to introduce yourself to professors
from those fields.
Dr. Carenen, a history professor, originally intended to be a lawyer, but fell in love with history as
soon as she started taking upper history level classes. She went on to earn her PhD in European
History and then worked in the publishing industry before getting her PhD in American History. She
then decided to become a professor because she missed academia and loved to teach. As a professor

Dr. Carenen, as a professor, has taken up her own academic research about Jewish fundraising
during the First World War, and additionally wrote two books– one about Israel called Fervent
Embrace, and another about terrorism. As far as creative activities go, students with history majors
participate in activities such as the History Club, which is planning a trip to Washington DC at this
time, and many of them also compete on the bowling team. Not to mention that global studies field
courses are offered, such as the trip to Israel, Jordan, and Palestine that will be taken this upcoming
spring. Finally, after graduation, students often attain careers as diplomats, lawyers, professors,
business analysts, etc. Graduate school is advised in most circumstances before heading off to work.
There, strong language and research skills and good relationships with professors are all looked at.
Another faculty member, Dr. Brown of the economics department, also received the same interview
questions. She was initially a business administration major in college, but since she enjoyed math
as well, she was told to consider economics where the two fields would be more–or–less combined.
She thought that economics was interesting and the problems were challenging, and graduated as an
economics major before pursuing her PhD to become an economics professor. In this department,

Is Nanotechnology A Field Of Applied Science?
Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Background
Nanotechnology is a field of applied science, focused on the design, synthesis, characterization and
application of materials and devices at the nanoscale. This is an emerging field which plays a major
role in the development of innovative methods to produce new products. Because of its greater role
in enhancing the performance of several existing technologies, it is gaining high attention.
Properties of materials often change dramatically when size reduces to nanoscale as compared to
that of bulk. Material made from nano–size particles that are smaller than 100 nanometers can
suddenly become much stronger than those predicted by existing materials–science models. There
are two main reasons for which materials property differ at the nanoscale. First, nanomaterials have
a relatively larger surface area when compared to their bulk material. Because of this, nanomaterials
are chemically more reactive and this will affect their strength or electrical properties. Second, at
nano scale quantum effects can begin to dominate which again affects the optical, electrical and
magnetic behaviour of materials[1,2,3].
Nanotechnology has offered solution for many problems associated with vast range of applications
in different field, such as in medicine, electronics, energy applications, industrial applications,
environmental science and many others. In medicine, nanomaterials are used for targeted drug
delivery, imaging and sensing applications. It is

A Role of Ethics and Social Responsibilities in Management.
Ethics can be defined as a process of evaluating actions according to moral principal of
values(A.Alhemoud). Throughout the centuries people were trying to choose between profit and
moral. Perhaps, some of them obtain both, but every time it could have roused ethical issues. Those
issues concern fairness, justice, rightness or wrongness; as a result it can only be resolved according
to ethical standards. Setting the ethical standards for the way of doing business in corporation is

Investigatory Design A systematic search of the database PsycINFO was conducted, as this research
repository is considered the leading scholarly file of research in the social and behavioral sciences
worldwide. Table 1 presents the volume of reference citations regarding drawing tests indexed in
PsycINFO. This output illustrates that 73% of all references have appeared since 1989 (614 of 840
citations) based on Total output; for journal references (69%), for books (88%), for dissertations
(89%). Based on this analysis there has been no decline on the volume of research on drawing
techniques evident in journal publications or books over the past decade. Table 2 summarizes survey
findings of both academic and applied settings on training emphasis andusage of drawing techniques
since 1989. This analysis includes the 60 published studies that were identified in journal
publications, based on clinician/practitioner and academic/trainingsamples, although the vast
majority of the data–pool is based on research conducted in the USA. Findings Of note, 2 caveats
are in order: First, survey results are almost always based only on those respondents who use tests or
based on official clinical records;hence, many studies report data on less than 50% of sample

In correlation, a recent business decision my employer made was to host, and honor, an Annual
Partners in Business Ethics Conference for a second year to integrate corporate social responsibility
into the university (UT – McCombs School of Business, 2017). This decision implies that there is a
concern that being socially responsible is important to their organization and the individuals it
serves – employees, patients, students or other abiding citizens. Furthermore, other businesses have
become aware of unethical behavior of their employees. Research reveals a majority of managers
have no tactic nor did they know about CSR or that it maintains a good reputation for the company

ethical business decisions – companies need to contribute CSR objectives by integrating the strategy

decision–making process that may have a huge impact on local consumers, communities, and even

English Language Personal Statement
Look at the world around you! What can you see? What attracts your attention? I will tell you.

communication. A language! An international language that everybody understands. Let's say
English. If you look around once more, you can see to what extent this language has dominated our
life. We use it to communicate, to transfer our thoughts, to understand what is going on around us,
and to learn. My interest in English and teaching started when I was at the high school where I used
to help my colleagues with any problems related to English language. For this, I decided to study

Introduction
Background of the study
Blogging has emerged as one of the most popular forms of online discourse. The ease and lack of
expense in setting blogs has raised intriguing possibilities for language learning in social media. The
unique nature of its architecture and its low cost have not only affected how different bloggers can
publish and distribute their work to a wider audience but also how they see themselves as writers.
According to Blood (2002), blogs have been used in various ways: as online journals, a means of
designing hypertexts, and more radically, to create what calls the first native form of discourse on
the internet. She argues that blogging best reflects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The focus of this study is on the discourse organization of Asian fashion blogs. Considering their
writing style, comparing the blogs of these particular Asian countries that are categorized into two
groups will be done throughout the study.

Investigation Into Real Life Incidents
Up until 1968, the idiom, 'Forensic Linguistics,' had not been used, and it is only since then that law
enforcement agencies have recognised the importance that is has upon the 'analysis of statements'
and of 'courtroom interaction' (Ollson, J. (2008, pg. 3–4.) In the past, the application of linguistics to
language, crime and law, involved the enforcement of 'Judges' Rules' within the legal system, in
which suspects had to 'dictate their narrative to police officers,' then the officer would type it out in
their own words, which would often result in invalid statements (Ollson, J, 2008, pg. 3.) However,
with forensic linguistics having only recently 'matured' as a method of analysis, it is now customary
for investigators to consider these various possible areas within their research, such as authorship
comparison and the concept of plagiarism within texts.
Therefore, in a world where Forensic Linguistics is used as a form of investigation into real–life
incidents, it is of upmost importance to underpin its validity. The inclusion of real–world case study
examples will assist in the overall outcome of the conclusion of this assignment as to whether
Forensic Linguistics can be interpreted as a valid form of investigation and if it's expertise is reliable
for the judge and jury (Solan, L. & Tiersma, P. M, 2002, pg. 221.) Subsequently, this essay will
explore the relevant notions of authorship attribution and the use of plagiarism within documents,

Performance Appraisal : Performance Evaluation
Performance Appraisal An effective method of performance evaluation is the 360–degree
performance appraisal. This method utilizes supervisor(s), subordinates, peers, and occasionally
customer feedback to provide the employee a clear picture how their actions affect others in the
workplace (Dalton, 1996). Areas on a performance evaluation that utilize the 360–degree
performance appraisal elements are; cooperation and teamwork, initiative and judgment,
dependability, and customer service. These elements of the evaluation work together and meet the
goal of a performance appraisal to motivate and improve the skills of the employee. Reliability and
Validity Critical elements of any performance appraisal are its reliability, validity, and objectivity.
Reliability is the consistency with which something is measured; validity is the extent to which an
instrument measures whatever it is intended to measure (Saal & Knight, 1995). In terms of
performance appraisal, questions addressed are if the appraisal is consistent across employees and
those doing the appraising, as well as ensuring the appraisal is actually measuring employee
performance and not an outlying characteristic. It is in this area that the 360–degree appraisal is
effective. Several authors have agreed that one observer does not effectively provide a thorough
performance assessment (Rothstein, 1990). Employees possess valid information and insight
regarding performance, and are useful because they have an

In this unit the role of the industrial psychologist will be discussed in relation to forensic
psychology. The HPCSA does not currently have a separate registration category for "Forensic

How can forensic psychology be defined? It is psychology as a specialist field of knowledge applied
to the legal field. It is applied in order to inform legal specialists and the legal courts to make
informed decision about matters of human behaviour. The psychologist as a specialist and expert is
sometimes at odds with the exact nature and specific legalistic procedures of the courts as human

The author, Thomas S Critchfield (2011) believes that scientists and practioners should be held

professions, science and practice, with different concerns and therefore should be kept separate in
order for each to succeed in their own way. It is to my knowledge that both must coexist to better
understand the issues that ABS typically faces.
According to Bales (2012) Chritchfield's ideas deem to be a misguided idea. Bales stated that while
the two professions may be different it is important to remember that there are individuals who
engage in both science and practice. It is impossible to say that these two parts are so separate from
each other that they need to flourish in different environments. This could cause translational
research to become nonexistent and lead use back to simple basic research and research that is for

The Discipline Of Applied Sciences
The discipline of applied sciences has been around for many thousands of years. Over time, the
writings in the discipline have evolved along with the progressive discoveries and advancements.
From this, a well–refined template to structure writings off of has been developed. Subsections of
this discipline have been able to take this template and run with it, modifying it to fit the specific
needs and values of their individual discourse communities. Kinesiology, as one of these subsections
in it's infant stages being only 50 some years old is still progressing in it's writings. Video games
have been around since the early 1970's, starting with the arcade classic Pong. Early incarnations of
video games had low quality graphics, and generally little effect aside from the enjoyment or
frustration from playing the game. As time and technology have progressed so have the effects that
video games have on their players. People have attributed lifestyles, addictions, and even violent
acts to things they have seen or experienced while playing video games. Authors Christopher
Ferguson and Brad Millington have both looked into some of these effects that video games have
produced. As an associate professor of psychology at Texas A&M University and holding a Ph.D. in

Statistics And Decision-Making In Hrm

  • 1. Statistics and Decision-Making in Hrm STATISTICS AND DECISION–MAKING IN HRM (word count 1155) The word statistics has a Latin origin where the word status means state. Statistics is defined as the science that helps us understand how to collect, organize and interpret numbers or other information (data) about some topic (Bennett, et al., 2003). It is a discipline of data collection and summarizing to aid understanding and decision–making. It is also concerned with evaluation of the present status and predicting the future (Stockberger, 1996). Statistics studies the nature of a relationship between two or more variables of interest by using the numerical statistical data. Moreover only statistics makes it possible to analyze these relationships (Kachigan, 1986). These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the company management perspective statistics help managers to convert data into information which enables to accept informed decisions (Levin and Rubin, 1997). Such management science procedures as project evaluation and review techniques and critical path method help to control and plan not only company projects and initiatives but take adequate people related decisions belonging to the functional area of Human Resource Management. HRM function involves activities such as recruitment, training, performance assessment, reward and motivation. Productivity of these activities to a great extent is predetermined by the wide use of statistical tools. By using statistics, HR forecasts the needs in terms of required number of employees and their level of qualification. For the recruitment of new staff the tests are conducted to assess the candidates on merit basis. Validity of various HR tests can be assessed by means of statistical tools. Statistical analysis of test results helps to reveal deficiencies in employee training programs and to assess the compensation program to determine whether they are reliable and support the organisation's performance objectives. Regular employee performance appraisals based on statistical methods are important for making HR decisions regarding compensation and promotion. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reading consists of two related processes: word recognition and comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how written symbols correspond to one's spoken language. Comprehension is the process of making sense of words, sentences and connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written text. Researchs and classroom practices support the use of a balanced approach in teaching reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension depends on efficient ... A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the words the poet uses and the ways they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and supporting details. However, a person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know the vocabulary that is used, understand the facts and cause–effect sequences that are presented, and recognize ideas that are presented as hypotheses and givens. Design and Culture Design and Culture Abstract: Uses "Design" in a different way; but one must add that a universal language is being constructed daily. design is understood here as a phenomenon which affects everybody. design is characterized by a dual alliance with both mass production and mass consumption and that these two phenomena have determined nearly all its manifestations .Industry unconsciously evolved its own aesthetic, and this aesthetic was from the beginning one which intelligent designers, whatever their background, tried to obey . Key Words: Culture, aesthetic, imperfect, confidence Now that "Design" is understood from Tokyo to Moscow, from Buenos Aires to Montreal, it is obvious that each country according ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Janus, design looks in tow directions at the same time: as a silent quality of all mass–produced goods it plays a generally unacknowledged but vital role in all our lives; as a named concept within the mass media, it is, however, much more visible and generally recognized. In this latter guise design becomes an extension of marketing and advertising. The "designer–jeans" phenomenon, which persuades us to buy a product because it has been designed, is, culturally speaking, totally distinct from the activity of the anonymous designers within industry who resolve the problems of cost, appearance and use in consumer products. The way in which design as an adjunct of marketing has grown out of design as an aspect of mass production is a major theme within the story of modem design and the focus of this book. It is a change which directly mirrors the way in which the model of mass–production industry, as presented by Henry Ford, which dominated American ideas about industrial organization in the early twentieth century, has been challenged by an alternative model which stresses batch production, a smaller scale of operations (or set of operations), and, at times, a fair amount of ... • 12. Symbolic Interaction Perspective On Deviance As Applied In... This paper compares and contrasts three different analyses on deviance as applied in social science. It begins by defining what deviance means in respect to societal norms, then goes ahead to expound on symbolic interaction, social conflict, and finally the functional, perspectives on deviance. The paper then zeroes in on the social conflict perspective and its influence in dispute resolution in societal disagreements. In analyzing the social conflict theory, the position held by the paper contradicts this school of thought by arguing for a capitalist approach to work that rewards hard work individually, and concludes by advancing the course of dialogue as a remedy to disputes between societal citizens. Deviance Social science describes deviance as an act or trait that runs contrary to acceptable norms in a society, whether in formal or informal settings. Deviance may be clustered as any acts or violations that run parallel with values and rules of an established social system. The unacceptable trait could well be beyond agreeable limits set by society. Rubington and Weinberg (2015), explain that deviance is relative and subject to place and time since a deviance in one setting cannot be categorized as such in a different perspective. In sociology, deviant actions will differ from place to place depending on the societal norms attributable to each community. From 387 B.C Plato?s Academy of Athens, where his metaphysics, epistemology, and social philosophy found expression and came to pervade Western thought. Plato was a dualist, separating the physical world from the world of true form. His assertion that reality is known through reason was not challenged until the rise of empiricism, to the Supreme Courts ruling on April 30, 1979. In Addinton v. Munsterberg came to direct Williams James?s laboratories at Harvard University. Luckenbach Western Governors University ETHICAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS 2 Company Q is a small local grocery store chain that has a poor attitude toward social responsibility. After reviewing the given, I feel the chain is more committed to profit than social responsibility. Most companies are in a business to make a profit, however, the difference in what is considered reasonable and what is considered ridiculous comes into play. The areas where the stores closed were in high–crime–rate areas, before ETHICAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS 3 closing the stores they could have done community outreach or service projects to help lower the rate of crime. They could have led the establishment of a neighborhood crime watch. They could have set up a mentorship program for teens at risk. There are a multitude of programs they could have implemented, some could probably have been used as a tax write off. If all of these efforts failed then I understand closing the stores. If they had to close the stores they should have made every effort to be sure that the displaced employees were able to find a job in another store or assisted them in being placed in another job. They also need to make every attempt to keep the building they were using occupied or cleaned up until it is occupied. How do these actions contribute to being socially responsible? In fact, this time it includes more steps to those companies in the animal testing business (Donna 16). Each corporation is required to register and keep records of the species. Again it had affected those who are employed in auctions, operators, dealers, and exhibitors to be certified. Thus certified employees must submit an annual report to congress. The reports helped the Congressmen keep track of the species; so living things would not be mistreated. Moreover the act expanded dogs' safety. Hounds were only acceptable for breeders, security, hunting, and as house hold pets. But there is a catch to it; dog owners must provide treatments (Donna 8). Signifying hounds would receive yearly check up on their satiability of well nutrients. However the act was expanding, it excluded most of the rights towards animals. In addition to the amendment, in 1985 it was re–modified again. It incorporated the labs and the environment of the organisms. There are also other problem might occur for this situation, such as duplication records, missing data, unstandardized data, misspelled or multiple spelling in the data. Furthermore, there are several variables or student information that will take some time to analyse which are, Information on why they want to study overseas and Other data points related to their attitude to international education. It is because; the response of the student for this information can be very subjective and quite troublesome to quantify or to group it. Segmentation or Model Issues The student segmentation and the classification model can be outdated over time. The behaviour of the students or prospective students change or maybe the job markets have shifted will make the models outdated. To avoid segmentation or model become obsolete, the data and the algorithm must be updated over time. We might have created segments that are not meaningfully different from each other. Some of the many questions raised are * Is it acceptable for corporations to use their considerable power tp shape government policy? * Is the government jeopardizing its role in protecting the public interest when politicians sit on the board of corporations? The government has a crucial role to play in establishing the 'rules of the game' by which we judge business ethics. When we talk about the government, we know that the government is involved in issuing laws related to business practices. Business ethics tend to begin where the law ends. On one hand, one could argue that it has certain advantagesif politicians have had the experience of the business world and vice versa. On the other hand, there are also quite significant ethical problems linked to the close amalgamation of business and politics. Eg. German ex–chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was criticized for taking up an appointment as Chair of the Germa–Russian company, in charge of the new gas pipeling through the Baltic Sea. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Philosophical Perspective The mind–body connection alludes to the affinity between the mind and body, specifically in matters of health and well–being. It is founded on the notion that an individual 's thoughts and emotions affect the body, as do social and behavioral factors. "A strong and healthy body is believed to have a positive effect on the mind, and a positive mind correspondingly allows for a healthy strong body" (Clarke, 2001). A philosophical perspective of the mind and body affiliation provides added insight into the various schools of thought regarding the ways in which our minds and our bodies interact. While some 'dualist '–based philosophies suggest that the mind is an entity completely independent of the body and vice versa, 'monoist ' viewpoints propose that the mind and the body are a part of a single being and thus function as one unit accomplishing different objectives. One such stance is the philosophical theory of behaviorism, which holds that "being in a mental state is the same as being in a physical state. In other words, since all that we can know about another person 's state of mind is through their behavior, there is nothing else" (Gatis, 2003). Thus the way one thinks has a direct impact on the way the body functions. For example, if an individual were to say, "I am ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reynolds Edmond, Oklahoma Abstract This paper explores related research in aspects of language acquisition, specifically, reading instruction and its effect on students who live in low socioeconomic environments. We will review the methods of explicit phonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more advantageous method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading instruction on the literacy development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed was collected from peer review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from EBSCOhost Education Research Complete and JSTOR: Journal Storage. Given the findings of this literature review, research suggests that explicit phonics instruction, when embedded in a whole language classroom, promotes growth in literacy skills among young children. Research suggests that multisensory phonics, based on Orton–Gillingham Approach, promotes literacy growth for students who are at– risk, however, its impact within a whole language classroom are undetermined. One might even question why they would be mentioned in the same context. Crime has become a major issue within today's society. It seems as though the only way to prevent most of them is to enforce the repercussions of the act and punish those that partake in it. Criminals often have motives or attributes that lead them into a life of crime. Forensic psychology is the cynosure that brings the association between psychology and law into perspective. The term forensic is defined by The Oxford English Dictionary as, "Relating to or denoting the application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of crime." Psychology is defined as, "The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given context and the mental characteristics or attitude of a person or group (OED)." These terms combined form one of the newest subfields of psychology. The main objective of forensic psychology is to aid in the punishment and prevention process of criminal and civil investigations. As the field continues to expand, a plethora of careers and opportunities have and are becoming available. Of course, with anything new and/or unfamiliar, there is question of credibility and moral. • 44. Discursive Practices and Gendered Reflections of Its Use Introduction The following theoretical framework is divided in five sections. The first one deals with the background to the study where a classification of research studies is done in terms of the way that language and discourse have been researched. The second part reflects the issue of gender in applied linguistics. The third tackles some key conceptualizations of literacy in terms of the research study. The fourth aims to explain how writing is undertaken to fulfill a brief description of the basis that underlies the study. Within it, it is explained the write–to–learn perspective that is the scope of the investigation. Background to the study Bucholtz (2003) asserts that discourse is language in context. Discourse enables establishing the existing relationship between language and gender within a given context. Then, discourse becomes the materialization of such a relationship. That is why discourse analysis has become one of the most outstanding methodologies to unravel gender issues within the EFL classroom. The foci of these studies have been the way the discursive practices are used and what gendered reflections this use shows. Some of these studies stress discourse as an anthropological tradition (Bucholtz, 2003). This point of view highlights how language is used in the cultural practices of the human beings. • 48. Is Nanotechnology A Field Of Applied Science? Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Background Nanotechnology is a field of applied science, focused on the design, synthesis, characterization and application of materials and devices at the nanoscale. This is an emerging field which plays a major role in the development of innovative methods to produce new products. Because of its greater role in enhancing the performance of several existing technologies, it is gaining high attention. Properties of materials often change dramatically when size reduces to nanoscale as compared to that of bulk. Material made from nano–size particles that are smaller than 100 nanometers can suddenly become much stronger than those predicted by existing materials–science models. There are two main reasons for which materials property differ at the nanoscale. First, nanomaterials have a relatively larger surface area when compared to their bulk material. Because of this, nanomaterials are chemically more reactive and this will affect their strength or electrical properties. Second, at nano scale quantum effects can begin to dominate which again affects the optical, electrical and magnetic behaviour of materials[1,2,3]. Investigation Into Real Life Incidents Up until 1968, the idiom, 'Forensic Linguistics,' had not been used, and it is only since then that law enforcement agencies have recognised the importance that is has upon the 'analysis of statements' and of 'courtroom interaction' (Ollson, J. (2008, pg. 3–4.) In the past, the application of linguistics to language, crime and law, involved the enforcement of 'Judges' Rules' within the legal system, in which suspects had to 'dictate their narrative to police officers,' then the officer would type it out in their own words, which would often result in invalid statements (Ollson, J, 2008, pg. 3.) However, with forensic linguistics having only recently 'matured' as a method of analysis, it is now customary for investigators to consider these various possible areas within their research, such as authorship comparison and the concept of plagiarism within texts. Therefore, in a world where Forensic Linguistics is used as a form of investigation into real–life incidents, it is of upmost importance to underpin its validity. The inclusion of real–world case study examples will assist in the overall outcome of the conclusion of this assignment as to whether Forensic Linguistics can be interpreted as a valid form of investigation and if it's expertise is reliable for the judge and jury (Solan, L. & Tiersma, P. M, 2002, pg. 221.) Subsequently, this essay will explore the relevant notions of authorship attribution and the use of plagiarism within documents, through the examination of ... • 66. Performance Appraisal : Performance Evaluation Performance Appraisal An effective method of performance evaluation is the 360–degree performance appraisal. This method utilizes supervisor(s), subordinates, peers, and occasionally customer feedback to provide the employee a clear picture how their actions affect others in the workplace (Dalton, 1996). Areas on a performance evaluation that utilize the 360–degree performance appraisal elements are; cooperation and teamwork, initiative and judgment, dependability, and customer service. These elements of the evaluation work together and meet the goal of a performance appraisal to motivate and improve the skills of the employee. Reliability and Validity Critical elements of any performance appraisal are its reliability, validity, and objectivity. Reliability is the consistency with which something is measured; validity is the extent to which an instrument measures whatever it is intended to measure (Saal & Knight, 1995). In terms of performance appraisal, questions addressed are if the appraisal is consistent across employees and those doing the appraising, as well as ensuring the appraisal is actually measuring employee performance and not an outlying characteristic. It is in this area that the 360–degree appraisal is effective. Several authors have agreed that one observer does not effectively provide a thorough performance assessment (Rothstein, 1990). Employees possess valid information and insight regarding performance, and are useful because they have an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Forensic Psychologist Essay In this unit the role of the industrial psychologist will be discussed in relation to forensic psychology. The HPCSA does not currently have a separate registration category for "Forensic Psychologist" as such and most forensic work is done by clinical and industrial psychologists that specialised with a postgraduate thesis or with additional training in forensic psychology. The registration categories in psychology, which are recognised by the Professional Board of Psychology (HPCSA), are research psychology, industrial psychology, educational psychology and counselling and clinical psychology (Unisa, 2012). How can forensic psychology be defined? It is psychology as a specialist field of knowledge applied to the legal field. It is applied in order to inform legal specialists and the legal courts to make informed decision about matters of human behaviour. The psychologist as a specialist and expert is sometimes at odds with the exact nature and specific legalistic procedures of the courts as human behaviour is hardly an exact science and often requires the specialist skills of observation and assessment and interpretation of a human sciences specialist. In the ordinary context most psychologist acts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 70. The Field Of Applied Behavioral Science The field of Applied Behavioral Science's future will be greatly affected by contemporary issues that involve the creation of the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA), board certification limitations, and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). First it is important to examine the effects that the APBA will have on ABS' future. The creation of the APBA will have many negative affects on the field of behavioral analysis as a whole. Many behavior analysts believe that the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), which is comprised mainly of individuals whom have a primarily scholarly interest, is not as supportive of behavior analysts who participate dominantly in practice. This idea that the ABAI ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author, Thomas S Critchfield (2011) believes that scientists and practioners should be held separate, however I believe that this will further damage our unity under the same field, Applied Behavior Analysis. Critchfields basis for this is that both are both professions, but are different professions, science and practice, with different concerns and therefore should be kept separate in order for each to succeed in their own way. It is to my knowledge that both must coexist to better understand the issues that ABS typically faces. According to Bales (2012) Chritchfield's ideas deem to be a misguided idea. Bales stated that while the two professions may be different it is important to remember that there are individuals who engage in both science and practice. It is impossible to say that these two parts are so separate from each other that they need to flourish in different environments. This could cause translational research to become nonexistent and lead use back to simple basic research and research that is for the sole purpose of helping the people with no care taken to flourish the field. This would lead to a field that may make discoveries but that may not be able to translate those ideas to benefit the lives of the people. If this deems to be the case, then why call our science "Applied" at all? Next, the licensure of ABS must be addressed. ABS is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Career Research Essay "I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile" (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. Psychology "Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology" (Sternburg 3). There are a wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations, be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. There are two specialities that I am interested in however, over the years, these specialties have become very similar. Clinical and counseling psychology have evolved to become one in the same. • 74. The Discipline Of Applied Sciences The discipline of applied sciences has been around for many thousands of years. Over time, the writings in the discipline have evolved along with the progressive discoveries and advancements. From this, a well–refined template to structure writings off of has been developed. Subsections of this discipline have been able to take this template and run with it, modifying it to fit the specific needs and values of their individual discourse communities. Kinesiology, as one of these subsections in it's infant stages being only 50 some years old is still progressing in it's writings. Video games have been around since the early 1970's, starting with the arcade classic Pong. Early incarnations of video games had low quality graphics, and generally little effect aside from the enjoyment or frustration from playing the game. As time and technology have progressed so have the effects that video games have on their players. People have attributed lifestyles, addictions, and even violent acts to things they have seen or experienced while playing video games. Authors Christopher Ferguson and Brad Millington have both looked into some of these effects that video games have produced. As an associate professor of psychology at Texas A&M University and holding a Ph.D. in criminal psychology, Christopher Ferguson looks at the effects that video games have on the mind in his works.
