to your dog secretly under the dining room table? Atoms and molecules make up our life. To start off, atoms refers to
the smallest part of an element that is still an element. Nextly, molecules refers to two or more atoms joined together
acting as a unit. In total, there are four major atoms and four major molecules when dealing with the atoms and
molecules of life. Wondering what the 4 major atoms are? They are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen
(CHON) that each major molecule has, but in different variations. The first major molecule is Carbohydrates. This
molecule contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Also, Carbohydrates splits into three sections called
manhachrid, disaccharide, and polysaccharide. These three sections have groupings of different building blocks. The
main building blocks for Carbohydrates is sugar. That being said, carbohydrates is a very fast energy source. Some
examples of Carbohydrates would be lactose, glucose, and maltose. A science experiment to test if Carbohydrates

I would not change the hours I pleasantly spend with my fellow UIL teammates for any materialistic object, no matter

I think that one thing that attracted me to biochemistry was how essential it is to the growth and prosperity of human
life. I chose to go into the field of biochemistry to further my education regarding medicine. Pharmacy is something
that I have been interested in since I was a little girl, I knew that whatever career path I went into I wanted to help
people. My dad encouraged me to attend a camp during the summer where I met with engineers, pharmacists and other
doctors; and ever since then pharmacy has stuck with me. When I was about 10 my grandfather was diagnosed with
lung cancer. At the time, he was diagnosed, he had stage 4 lung cancer leaving him with no other options other than
radiation and medicines to try and slow the spread of the cancer and limit the pain he had been experiencing. I was
with him a majority of the time he was sick and saw the way different types of medicines affected him. I knew that
there had to be some way that this awful disease could be stopped and the suffering it brings to the patients and their
families can be ended, that someone will discover a cure to treat and prevent this deadly disease that also happens to
be the leading cause of death among the cancer groups. I decided from then on that I wanted to do something to make
a difference in people's lives and try to prevent people from experiencing what my grandfather had to endure.

Macromolecules make up the structures of cells; therefore they are known to be in all forms of life. Macromolecules
are made up of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. These macromolecules are also monomers and when
linked together they form polymers. The different reagents are used to find the presence of the macromolecules.
Carbohydrates are molecules which are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Carbohydrates are broken

One example that teeters between good and bad is the role of biochemistry in the internal combustible engine. The
combustible engine takes liquid gasoline and converts it to gas which is burned and converted into mechanical energy
that powers the car. Growing up in Los Angeles, CA there are people and cars everywhere. However, with so many
cars using gasoline there are two critical downfalls. The first comes from the accumulation of smog, pollutants that
interact with the atmosphere. When the gas is burned, the waste is filtered through the catalytic converter but smog is
still emitted. Too much smog inhalation can lead to birth defects and even cancer. The other downfall, which is just as
important, is global warming. When smog levels are high enough those harmful gases emitted by engines get trapped
and are unable to leave the atmosphere. This attracts more sunlight and in turn leads to added melting of the ice caps.
Yet, the hope for Earth is not lost. There are measures being taken looking into alternative sources, other than gasoline,
that we can use to power cars. Some have looked into using ethanol from corn and cellulose as a substitute, while

The purpose of this lab is to understand how non–living systems can make it easier for chemical reactions to occur. In
this lab, raw wheat germ acid phosphate was used to detach it from other chemicals. Raw wheat germ is an example of
an enzyme which is defined as, "a biological catalyst, all catalysts work by speeding up the rate at which a chemical
reaction occurs." (Krane, 2018). Enzymes are made up of proteins that can be isolated in two different ways, assay and
precipitation. Assay is defined as, "generally readily available for most enzymes and depend on the ability to detect a
change (often in color) as substrates are converted to products as the reaction occurs." (Krane, 2018). Precipitation can
be described as, "procedures often begin with a series of trial and error experiments. There is no standard protein
isolation technique that can be applied to all proteins and some large classes of proteins, like membrane–bound
proteins." (Krane, 2018). This lab was performed in three different sections, the first one being wheat germ
suspension, where heat was used to purify and isolate the wheat germ. In the second portion of the lab, examiners
found the concentration of the wheat germ protein. In the final step of the experiment examiners found the amount of
acid phosphatase in each of the tested microtubes.

Every cell membrane incorporates a fluid mosaic model. The "mosaic" of protein molecules embedded in a lipid
bilayer. It's fluid as most proteins and lipid molecules drift through it. The membrane consists of a phospholipid
bilayer embedded with various proteins. The proteins help to get polar/hydrophilic molecules through the plasma
membrane. Polar molecules have difficulty passing thru the hydrophilic membrane. Nonpolar molecules however,
easily pass thru. The proteins can be integral proteins, meaning they go all the way through the lipid bilayer or
peripheral proteins that sit on the hydrophilic outer layer and wait for something to happen. The layers are somewhat
fluid, allowing the proteins to move across them. See diagram below.
No fat diets can actually do more harm than good. The body needs moderation of all energy producing macronutrients;
fats, carbohydrates and proteins. By not eating any fat, the body starts to utilize the fats stored in the body, thus
depleting the stores and people lose weight. However, once those stores are gone, the good fats or HDL's, are no
longer able to filter out the bad cholesterol. This can lead to increased cholesterol levels in the blood and heart disease.
A no fat diet also causes poor vitamin absorption of the necessary fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats transport
those vitamins from the liver to various parts of the body.

Biological macromolecules are the large molecules necessary for life. There are four different types of
macromolecules which include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Each macromolecule has a specific
function like providing energy or simply insulation. Macromolecules are made from monomers which come together
through dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis to create the polymer or macromolecule.
Carbohydrates are made from monosaccharides which are shaped like hexagons and come together to make
polysaccharides which provide quick energy, structural support for plants (cellulose in cell walls) and are also found as
chitin in the exoskeletons of arthropods. Lipids are made from glycerol and three fatty acids and are found in two
different forms–unsaturated and saturated. Lipids provide long term energy storage, insulate and cushion, and prevent
water loss. Proteins are made from amino acids which come together forming a protein with peptide bonds. Proteins
serve as hormones, muscle, parts of the immune system, and enzymes but if they are the wrong shape, they can 't do
their job. Nucleic acids are made from nucleotides and serve as DNA and RNA which store genetic info and transfer
info to make new cells.

There are four major classes of macromolecules. They are lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids. There are
many similarities between these macromolecules, and they all play a very important role in biology. However, there
are also many differences, especially between lipids and the other three groups.
