2. Ownership
Ownership refers to how a business is owned. There are several ways in which
a business can be owned, these methods are, it could be a sole trader, a public
limited company, a private limited company, or a government run enterprise,
partnerships. These different forms of ownership have different attributes
some of which over lap for example both private limited and public limited
companies are owned by individuals however there are still differences with
the shares of public owned business open to the public while private limited
companies shares are offered out to individuals not the public.
3. Owning Disney
Walt Disney was born on 5th December 1901. In 1919, he began his career
using his gift of art to create cartoons. He first started an animation company
called Laugh-O-Grams. After it went bankrupt, with the money he made, Walt
Disney moved to California to create a new company which was originally
called the Disney Brothers Studio and is now known as The Walt Disney
Company, or Disney . Walt Disney died on the 15th December 1966. Disney is a
public limited company which is currently owned by shareholders. The current
CEO and Chairman of the company is Robert A. Iger
4. Who owns the BBC
The BBC is a company that was set up by the government back in the 1920s as
the government believed that having a service for the public would be
beneficial and it was made that everyone who has a tv/ machine that is capable
of tuning in live would be required to pay for a tv licence to pay for it, this
means that the BBC is owned by the british public, who pay for this licence.

In the past the BBC was looked over by an independent organisation called the BBC trust which had
the sole purpose of ensuring that BBC made content which does three things, inform (BBC news) to
entertain (doctor who) and to educate (frozen planet). However in april 2017 this organisation was
scraped and now the BBC is directly managed by ofcom which manages channels all across the
country.
The current head of the BBC is sir david clementi who acts as the chairman of the BBC, and ensures
that the BBC continues to provide content with following the requirements and manages the top of
what the BBC does.

The BBC obtains funding through many different ways, the first and largest
source of income for the bcc is though the money they get for tv licences which
in 2013/2014 accounted for 72.1 percent of company revenue.
The next highest form of revenue for the BBC is its commercial wing which
creates programing abroad such as BBC news which people can pay to watch.
Another form of revenue for the BBC is selling formats to other countries/
companies which could be done either as a one off payment or instead as a
percentage of profits.

Merchandising makes up another part of their revenue which includes childrens
toys posters ect. 27% of merchanting profit comes from BBCs mega shows, doctor
who, top gear, strictly come dancing, BBC earth and lonely planet.
A relatively new form of income of the BBC is the use of product placement which is
a ban upon them that has recently been lifted meaning we can expect it to become
more important to them as they make more money.
Finally the BBC earn money from a variety of other forms of media that are generally
associated with their shows such as their collection of doctor who mini books and
video games they may chose to release.
8. Funding
Its current net worth is over $92b (£72.3b) . Disney earns money from a variety of things.
Firstly, Disney is owned by shareholders who invest money into the company.
The company earns roughly $1.3b+ a year through their interactive resources such as
entertainment and online games.
$4b+ is earned from customer services/ merchandise such as lunchboxes, water bottles
and toys. Over $8b is earnt from subsidiaries when owned smaller companies such as
Pixar, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Animation. Also, $15b+ is earned from parks and
resorts such as Disneyland and Walt Disney World. And over $21b is made from media

Subsidiaries are companies which are owned by other companies, which are
referred to as a parent company. These companies became subsidiaries as
long as the the parent company owns over 50% of its total shares as this gives
them the right to do what they want with it. Without having to consult the other
shareholders in the company an example where a company does not own all
the shares of company but owns enough to do what they want with it is

10. BBC subsidiaries
The BBC has 100% ownership of BBC worldwide which was formerly called
BBC enterprise which is its commercial wing dealing with selling programs and
running them abroad which gives them far more profitability.
The in the 70s the BBC began a process in which the decentralised their
organisation and broke many parts of it into subsidiaries which the BBC
maintain 100% ownership of which in effect gives them full power over any
final decision that they make.

The BBC also owns a number of other subsidiaries such as BBC news which is
as the name suggests is responsible for bringing news to the public on BBC
one and world wide.
The BBC also has subsidiaries which are not based around creating a profit but
instead doing things for public interest such as keeping records of all noteable
programing they make such as the first and last episode of a series and the
entirety of important shows such as doctor who which it is also tasked with
tracking down lost episodes of.

13. Synergy
Synergy is the release of a brand across different media platforms. Media
institutions use synergistic techniques in order to increase the image of a
brand and to expand their target audience.
Companies that use synergy gain a lot of money as the company would be
willing a lot of money to use the other companies product in order to help boost
theirs.
14. Examples of synergy in the BBC
The BBC uses synergy on its larger shows an example of this is how each year
there would be a reasue of a top gear book which would be targeted towards
younger children to help get them into the series.
Another large series that the BBC uses synergy with is doctor who which while
using books like top gear also released a movie and a mini cartoon series for
young children, a large number of video games.
15. Synergy in the BBC 2
The reason that the BBC uses synergy is to help expand the influences of its
brand recognition, as well as to expand the target audience of a program as
this means it will attract more people. The reason a company wants to increase
these things is it will allow for them to earn more money as more people will
buy their products, I personally was introduced to doctor who form one it's
small books which brought me into the entire series.
16. Disney and synergy
In the 1930’s. Disney were the first company to use synergy with Mickey
Mouse. After episodes such as Steamboat Willie, companies would pay Disney
a lot of money to have Mickey Mouse on their products in order to help boost
their organisation.
17. What is the difference between products
and services in media
The difference between services and media down to whether or not a person can consume them or
not.
For example it is not possible to consume steam making it a service valve supplies while you can
consume the games that are sold through it such as half life which act as products.
It is rare for a company to make you pay for both the product and the service, how ever normally you
are made to pay for one or the other and it is not free to use for example spotify charges you to use
the service however the music is free while the earlier example valve offers steam for free but charges
for games
18. Examples of services of the BBC.
The BBC provides a variety of different of different services, the most well
know of these are the large number of channels that it runs on the tv BBC 1/9, it
offers a variety of radio channels for people to listen into, the BBC also more
recently opened up a website that people can visit which is ranked in the top
100 most visited websites in the world. It does not just provide entertainment
but now also keeps collections of their previous release for future generations
to see.
19. Examples of products of the BBC
The BBC provides a variety of different products which fit the three values it is
supposed to support previously mentions. Some of their products are aimed at
extremely popular and are enjoyed around the globe while others are enjoyed to
much smaller degrees. It offers products for tv such as sherlock, different radio
programs such as today, audio books, and dvd boxsets all of which are enjoyed
by a variety of people.
