is a personal meaning for the listener. Selecting five songs to represent my life was a difficult choice

century. The drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York, provides us an account of
the anarchy that occurred; following the life of a man named Amsterdam, the son of a popular Irish–
American leader, Priest Valon. Supported by the extraordinary acting performances by Daniel Day–
Lewis (aka Bill the Butcher) and Leonardo DiCaprio (as Amsterdam) the film is a massive
achievement. Scorsese creates a visualization of American's primitive past, where violence and
unrest was frequent in New York at the beginning of the Civil War. This is due to the editing and
packaging of the story is filled with the same no–nonsense attitude that is shared with the characters
themselves. Fueled by the hostility between the different social–groups who inhabit the Five Points.
Every character lives on knives edge the whole film, as the groups live amongst each other in the
crowded burrows. Scorsese uses this attitude to elegantly transition between the multiple plot lines

Growing up in run–down neighborhood can have various effects on an individual. Getting involved
in illegal activities, albeit easy and rewarding at the time, can lead an individual to a jeopardizing
ongoing cycle. Illustrated in both Slick Rick and Black Stars "Children's Story," a young man has
been led down a wrong path, where each of their lives were dominated by illegal acts. This was
consuming to the individuals, and ultimately lead to tragic outcomes. Black Stars rendition of
"Children's Story" was an extension of Slick Rick's original composition. Black Star expanded the
track to incorporate the embezzlement often found within the music industry. Slick Rick and Black
Star emphasize the fatal aftermath that often supersedes the preoccupied performance of thieving. In
1989, Slick Rick released a single that had an undeniable truth about growing up with inferior

Our group chose the man known by many in the hip–hop world as Mos Def. He is known for being
a superb lyricist, poet, and actor. We are doing two of his works named "Hip–Hop" from off his
album Black on Both Sides and a poem he wrote regards to the Barclays Center named "On
center.stadium.status". Before I talk about these two works of art, let me give a brief background on
Mos Def.

like any of his albums. Mr. West is constantly fighting to be a good husband, father, and music

"Good ass Intro" is an up–beat testament to Chance changing both as an artist and as a person. The
four minutes that follow work by on skittering rhymes and slippery wordplay, "ending with a line
proclaiming this to already be your favorite album." He speaks on his life since the release of "10
Day" and vows to be "better than the last time." The track really sets the tone for what is to come.
The most lyrically rich track comes next as a two part analysis of the cities violence. After a few

known for selling out in just minutes, making it into high–end fashion shows such as New York and
Paris fashion week. If you don't know him from his music or fashion career, then you most likely
know him from his bold, spontaneous moments where he speaks his mind in the national spotlight,

Intro
Yeezus is probably best summed up by the first sound you hear after turning it on. A deafening
distorted synth assaults your ears while Kanye reminds us that he's number one. This overwhelming
introduction was specifically chosen by Kanye for the purpose of conveying the themes of anger
and frustration that will appear throughout the album. It's marked by songs where Kanye declares
himself a God and moments of the most extreme egoism in modern music.
Ye is...shockingly different. It begins with a quiet passage of what I think is manipulated vocals
creating a simple, relaxed melody. Kanye starts rapping about something we've never really heard
him discuss before: his internal monologue. It sounds calm, like a warm summer morning. Kanye
isn't yelling, he's not telling us how much of a legend he is. Instead he's painting a picture of his
struggle with mental illness. So how the hell are these two albums related? Despite the massive
chasm between them in production, lyricism and presentation...I see them as two sides of the same
