Essay on Greasy Lake, a Critical Review
In the short story Greasy Lake, Boyle told of the changing of boys to men in one night. When it was cool to be bad. Senior year in high school, 19
years old and stupid. Not having any real clue as to the real world works, Driving mom's cars using dad's money. In Greasy Lake, T.C. Boyle used the
theme of being bad by using the different characters to symbolize someone always trying to be more than they really are.
The biggest problem with being "bad" is the person on top always has someone wanting to knock him/her off his or her thrown. T.C. Boyle painted
the picture nicely, "able to manage a ford with lousy shocks over a rutted and gutted blacktop road at 85 while rolling a joint." This clearly paints a

This may have been fun and games if it had been a friend that thought the people were as bad as there reputation. They expected to "slap backs with a
red–faced Tony, roughhouse a little" roughhousing to show how bad they are. After realizing the mistaken identity of the 57 Chevy was not a friend
"There was no reasoning with this bad greasy character –clearly he was a man of action." This shows that although the author doesn't put it in print,
they may have in fact tried to reason with another character they now consider "bad." When the new tougher "greasy character" kicked him with his
Steele toed boot and chipped his "favorite tooth", like a Heavyweight boxer nearing the end of his career. He thought to himself "I was in a whole lot
of trouble." This clearly showed that someone else was in charge.
In order to regain some self respect, like rabid dogs, the wannabe's nipping at the heals of a giant; would do almost anything. The main character
grabbed a tire iron from under his front seat of his car, "Bad characters always kept tire irons" "for such an occasion." The main character admits he
hasn't been in a fight since the sixth grade yet feels the need to prove his testosterone true and grab the tire iron and hit the greasy character in the head.
When the Greasy characters girlfriend jumped out of the car screaming "animals" this

How Does Masculinity Affect Women
We often see women affected by social norms and negatively represented but it's always good to look at the other side of the spectrum. Masculinity
can deeply affect and cause issues in boys and young men. These issues are mainly emotional damages and the definition of what being a man is. On
of the ways to fix this would be to better represent masculinity and widen the spectrum of what a man really is. First of all, the definition of what being
a man is a central issue for young males. Paul Theroux talks about always liking being a man in his essay, "Being a Man." He points out that, "Fiction
Вwriting is equated with a kind of dispirited failure and is only manly when it produces wealth – money is masculinity. So is drinking." This shows ...

In Rebecca Walkers' "Putting Down the Gun," she states that, "When I asked him about making friends based on common interest rather than
superficial categories, he got flustered. "You don't understand," he said huffily. "Boys talk about sports, like their matches and who scored what and
stuff or they talk about new version... Tears welled up in her eyes. "I don't have anything to talk about." In this quote we can see the emotional
damages of expectations in Walkers' eleven–year–old son. He has to pretend to be someone he is not in order to make a conversation with someone.
This shows the pressures of masculinity on young males. The constraints of conversations has brought an eleven–year–old into tears about not fitting
in. This shows a small spectrum of the psychological issues and damages on males. Paul Theroux also goes on to speak about the causes of the
psychological problems males face in "Being a Man," he claims that, "how can one think about men without considering the terrible ambition of
manliness?... It is a hideous and crippling lie, it not only insists on difference and connvies out superiority, it is also by its nature
destructiveв”Ѓemotionally damaging and socially harmful." Theroux is trying to say that masculinity allows superiority and difference between men
and women which causes damage between both gender and socially harm them. The act of making men and women seperate has caused a

Masculinity In Malboro Man
Just like women are pressured by the need to act feminine, men are pressured by the need to act masculine. They have to prove themselves superior,
independent, and physically powerful else they aren't seen as a proper man. Nearly every male is judged by this standard which constantly pressures
them into roles they may not want to fulfill. Young boys and men within society constantly face the problem of having to meet the standards of the ideal
man by having to prove their masculinity which limits the actions that they can perform and conceals their true personality. To begin with, men within
society have to prove that their masculinity. This is seen within Leonard McCombe's picture, "Marlboro Man", which portrays a tough and rugged ...

Within Theroux's same essay, he writes about how men who pursue creative arts, which are "obnoxious to the manly ideal", are negatively judged
since there is "something wrong" with those who seek "uncompetitive and solitary" professions. Certain fields are seen as going against the male
culture that has been established due to its implications of solitude and casual work that goes against the tough and competitive male. He further
writes about how men are urged away from these unnatural behaviors by being placed in "sports, the Boy Scouts, or a boy's camp" (Theroux). Not
only are some actions viewed negatively, but the pressure to do certain actions that promote masculinity exists as well. Rebecca Walker's essay,
"Putting Down the Gun", describes her anecdotal observations of how her son feels the need to "enter sports or play violent games" in order to "fit in
and draw attention" when he was otherwise ignored despite his other interest. The need to conform to the general stereotypes of a male, sports and
violence, is promoted in Walker's situation since the interests of her son wasn't good enough. The limitations placed on men to promote their
masculinity inhibits them showing who they really

Six Single Mother Myths Busted by Online Dating Essay
6 Single Mother Myths Busted by Online Dating
Dating as a single mother is fraught with lots of potential hazard and stigma. Before online dating has become a craze, single moms who are hoping to
find another chance at "happy ever after" usually do not get too much luck.
The stigma that comes along with being a single mother drives real men away and makes it ultra impossible for single moms to get another shot at
happiness. Only until the dawn of online dating did these single moms stumble upon real and ever–lasting love.
Online dating has not only become a fad. It has become a tool for real men to get to know their dates without having to go through all the trouble, yet
guaranteeing that they would soon sit at the dinner table with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is worth knowing that real men consider online dating because they, too, are longing for someone to genuinely care for them.
Being a single mother gives off the idea that men just will never be in the top of their priorities, especially when there are children always groping for
their mother's attention, not to mention the job, the kitchen sink, the stopped up toilet, etc.
There are way too many rivals to compete against and discerning men would not go for any woman who can only promise her second–best attention
and affection.
3. Single mothers are just never available.
A single mother's schedule is never open. They are the kind to cancel dates at the last minute. How can you have a relationship with someone who
cannot even be there? In order to make sure you of that rare shot to be loved again, single women need to invest time and effort.
Most men are put off by the lack of time being returned to them by single mothers and this becomes bomb–ticker. With the advent of online dating,
single mothers are able to commit their time to a man they really think finally deserves them. Single mothers have never been more available.
4. Single mothers are emotionally unavailable.
Single mothers usually have their primary focus on her children. This is a negative thing for men who are unable to see beyond the naked eye. While
some men are turned off by the single mom's unconditional attention to her children, real men see this as a plus, a positive character instead of a

Advertising During The Cold War
During the era after World War 2 ended and before the Cold War began, advertising started to become increasingly popular. Companies would use ads
to persuade the consumer into buying various goods or services that were being advertised. These propaganda agencies used a "you should buy it to
fix your problem" mentality. The ads in today's society target certain age groups with a variety of aspects that might interest them into buying a product
because they, the consumer, want to fit in and be a part of something.
Before Marlboro Man, there was Marlboro Woman that was used to target only the female audience. This ad, however, was not targeted towards men
because the cigarettes were considered feminine at the time. In 1957 Marlboro created

Like many child, the boy just sit with his father and listen to them without thinking. As the story point out, "The boy enjoyed the talk and sometimes
felt he was allowed to hear all the secrets of the world, and was only mildly frustrated by the mysteries he could not understand. (p.218)" That means,
the boy feel he is an adult when he sit with his father and listen to their conversation about women and some adult jokes. As it mentions, he can't
understand everything they talked because he doesn't interested on the topics that they talk.so he is still immaturity at that time because he doesn't
interest on that and has no idea about the meaning of the conversation. But he can understand the conversation like that is only for adult.
Let's move on to the incident of the story, the boy was very childish after the incident happened and his act and thought was really a kid. As the story
says, "He felt the shadow and weight of his father behind him, placid and unashamed. Oh how he hated him and his smug, foreign stupidity! Why did
he have to be his father (p.220)?" We can know the boy was really childish after the incident happened. Although his father's behavior was rude or not
good, he is so emotional and doesn't give his father respect. His father grab the orange form a young man who seemed wants to give help. The boy
couldn't judge his father like that way because he doesn't know these oranges are for their family and

The Male And Female Gender Through Life Experiences
Matthew Drozd
How Do We Know What Gender We Are? Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando, and Thomas Page McBee's memoir, Man Alive, aim to define the male and
female gender through life experiences. Virginia Woolf uses the eponymous protagonist, Orlando, to define the freedom that men have within society
while women face many societal restrictions. Within Man Alive, Thomas, a transgendered man, experiences similar freedoms and restrictions that
Orlando experiences through his experiences within society. Man Alive is the journey of Thomas Page McBee's transition fromwoman to man; it
focuses not on his physical change but on his mental change. Orlando was placed in a predicament that allowed him to experience life both as man
and woman. The first thirty years of Orlando's life was spent as a man then he was permanently transformed into a woman. Almost parallel to
Orlando's transition experience, Thomas was also in a predicament that allowed him to experience life as a man and woman. Thomas, born Page,
goes through a transition to become male. Orlando and Thomas both aimed at trying to figure out who they were in society; Thomas was trying to
find what kind of man he wanted to become and Orlando was trying to find what kind of woman she was becoming. For example, if female Orlando
was promiscuous, she would be heavily criticized by her community while male Orlando received no censure. Man Alive focused, not on the criticism
that Thomas received but, on the characteristics of men via

Coming of Age in The Man Who was Almost a Man by Richard...
The Man Who Was Almost a Man
What does it mean for someone to become a man? How does one get the key or password to becoming a man? Some believe that becoming a man is
just referring to a coming of age, and it somewhat is, however there is more. In the short story "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" by Richard white,
Dave, the main character is a young boy trying to become a man and is searching for the key. However, there are certain ways to do things in society,
and there are ways to not, and both of these ways have their benefits and consequences. In this short story Dave sees the gun as a symbol of manhood,
and it will set him free of his childhood.
Throughout the short story the reader can tell that Dave is eager to leave his childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dave still shows thoughts pertaining to the attainable manliness of having a gun by thoughts of shooting at Mr. Hawkins's house. It seems as if
Dave's thoughts are blurred and all he sees is the key to becoming a man is having a gun and using it so he is doing this as much as he can along
with his crave for power, even though it is just causing others to have even less respect for a reckless irresponsible child with a gun. However, Dave's
wishes were still granted when he is forced to start maturing into being a man more rapidly than others and having to take responsibility for his actions.
Every choice has its benefits and its consequences, unluckily, with Dave's choices the consequences greatly outweighed the benefits that were being
received. Dave had the wrong idea and believed that a gun could symbolize becoming a man whenever all it actually did is rush him into something
that he is not ready for, and cause him to do wrong in the eyes of his family and the society. Back to the question, "What does it mean for someone to
become a man?" One could say that Dave eventually learned his lesson by the end of the short story that you cannot push respect upon yourself by
others with force. Becoming a man is by definition when "a person with the qualities often associated with males such as bravery, spirit, or toughness"
grows out of their childhood and matures into adulthood. When

Gender Stereotypes in Othello Essay
Stereotypes are commonly held generalized beliefs that most or all individuals sharing a given trait also should or do share other attributes assumed
to be associated with aspects such as race, religion, and physical attribute. While stereotypes can erroneously shape people's views of others, they can
also influence the stereotyped individuals' behavior as people often attempt to conform to these flawed images, especially in regards to gender
stereotypes. Shakespeare's great play Othello uses its main characters to embody the characteristics of the stereotypical females and males according to
society's liking. The stereotypical woman is loyal and faithful to her husband, while the male stereotype possesses strength, control, and dominance. ...

Shakespeare mocks society's extreme measures by suggesting death as the sole option for Othello when he fails to understand that Desdemona may not
fit female stereotypes. Without the ability to label her, Othello fails to "assert Desdemona's chastity and corruptibility simultaneously" and "murders
Desdemona to redeem her from degradation" (Neely). The characters, like many people, struggle to alter views that have been so firmly pressed into
their minds. In this way, Shakespeare negatively comments on humans' inabilities to see beyond what society tells them and to comprehend truths
unique to a specific person rather than his gender roles. Shakespeare uses the characters Desdemona and Othello to display how people become
accustomed to the gender identities that society defines for them. Therefore, both characters, as depicted by their deaths, fail to understand each other
personally as individuals instead of as the stereotypical man or woman that is being presented.
Although misperceptions about the other gender are dangerous causes of downfall, flawed views among one's own gender are also great contributors to
destruction. Othello and Desdemona best exemplify this notion. Desdemona presents herself as pure, compassionate, and understanding towards
everyone, especially Othello. Shakespeare theorizes on how some women believe the stereotype about females is valid and must be followed, and men
can exhibit the same

Archetypes In A Marlboro Man
As explained by Piotr Wrzosinski in his article "A Marlboro Man Story" for k–message, the Marlboro man campaign uses three powerful psychological
methods. The first being the, "the use of archetypes". According to Carl Gustav Jung, "we all universally share some embedded events, figures and
motifs that are easily understood by anyone and that trigger unconscious reaction, similar to most if not all the people".(Gustav–Jung, 1981, p.111)
These universal patterns are called "archetypes". These archetypes are extremely useful in marketing, "whether they are embedded in the human nature
or learned through socialisation process, the effect is the same".(Gustav–Jung, 1981, p.112) Archetypes allow us to build strong appealing and
memorable stories.

Synthesis Essay On Sports And Young Men
Boys and young men are often being urged to be manly. Advertisement always makes men look strong and handsome, as opposed to lanky and
unattractive. Our society affects men in a way that women wouldn't understand. Women think that men have it easy all the time but do they really?
They face issues just like women do. A central issue facing boys and young men is that they are forced into being sporty, dull–witted, and physically
appealing.
Every boy and young man is asked if they ever played sports and most say yes but when they are forced into being in a sport, it is difficult to want
to say yes since they forced into it. You would think that sports would teach men to be respectful but as said in Source 2, "Everyone is aware of how
few in number are the athletes who behave like gentlemen. Just as high school basketball teaches you how to be a poor loser, the manly attitude
towards sports seems to be little more than a recipe for creating bad marriages, social misfits, moral degenerВates, sadists, latent rapists and just plain
louts." This shows that men who are forced into sports aren't really that great of a person. It doesn't teach them anything good and only makes them
learn how to make themselves a lesser kind of human being. Men are also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women are said to prefer men who are sporty and what man that is sporty isn't physically appealing? "In a nutshell, the girls liked the jocks the best
and sometimes designed to give the time of day to the other team, the computer nerds," (Source 4). This just shows that girls prefer jocks over
computer nerds. Source 1 tells us that Marlboro cigarettes were transformed "from the feminine appeal of being "mild as may" to a more rugged
image that appealed to men." This proves that Marlboro cigarettes were once used to appeal to women and of course, an attractive male was used in the
cover but now they made it slightly more manly so that it can attract men

The Philip Morris Tobacco Company Essay
Phillip Morris
Phillip Morris
The Philip Morris tobacco company started in 1847 on a small street in London (Sanders, Wisse, & Van, 2015). One of the primary goals is to be a
socially creditworthy company, at both local and global level. Consequently this is the reason Philip Morris had passion for social performance. They
began as a very small family business specializing in hand rolled cigarettes. In 1902, the company moved to New York City and merged. Even though
the company stayed small by 1960 it was the sixth largest company in the United States. The company acquired popularity using their Marlboro Man
advertising campaign. The Marlboro Man brought Phillip Morris to the top of the industry. Marlboro used the image of a rugged cowboy enjoying a
cigarette on horseback quickly adapt men into enjoying their brand. The success of the advertisement was incredible. In 1954 Marlboro sales
accounted for $154 million in cigarette sold (Stevenson, & Proctor, 2008). Phillip Morris growth was rapid in the United States in 1983. Manufacturers
could not understand how ammonia improved the taste of tobacco. The tobacco company discovered that ammonia would also increase the tobacco
volume in cigarettes. From there, the company began to grow into other businesses expanding on its outside market. Philip Morris accepted Miller
Brewing Company, General Foods, Kraft and the merger between South African Breweries with Miller Brewing. In 2003 Philip Morris Companies

Essay on What Makes a Good Soldier?
What is a soldier? What makes a good soldier? Merriam–Webster's online dictionary defines a soldier as one who "engages in military service", a
"skilled warrior", and a "militant leader or follower". The characteristics of a soldier vary in the different military branches but ultimately a soldier is
loyal to his or her country, willing to fight and die. In an article by B.R. Burg, the author states "The complete officer must be the complete man, they
believed, and to measure up each had to possess an amalgam of qualities that included patriotism, courage, honor, loyalty, absolute honesty, and

with the outside world is very important to each of the characters. Hearing about their hometowns often gives the men a feeling that there is something
worth fighting for. An example of this type of correspondence comes from Corporal Michael Alan McAninch:
From the word we got last night we should be going back to Hill 10 in about a week. Sure will be good, but we know that whatever they say we're

1.How would you describe Marlboro 's competitive position in early 1993?
Marlboro, the leading cigarette brand for Philip Morris, was the dominant player in the premium priced market. While RJR was the second largest
player in the market, RJR's cigarette brands were fragmented. At the end of 1992, Marlboro had 24.4% unit market share, while each of the RJR brand
cigarettes had less than 7% market share. Philip Morris, at 53% operating contribution margin, was significantly more profitable than RJR, at 34%
operating contribution margin.

Phillp Morris was also presumably worried about the aggressive price cuts and promotions by RJR to increase its market share.
Goals of Philip Morris Strategy
Philip Morris needed a aggressive competitive response to tacklethe threats of: declining market share, increasing share of discount brands, regulation,
and RJR's promotions and price cuts. They decided to aggressively attack the existing discount brands and make the Philip Morris brand significantly
more price competitive.
Philip Morris effectively cut price by 20%, creating 2 tiers of cigarette pricing (from 3 tiers before). Their premium products were now significantly
more competitive, compared with the discount brands due to their reduced price and existing strong brand image. Philip Morris were betting that a
large portion of consumers would compare their premium product as price competitive with the discount brands, and would chose Marlboro due to
its superior brand image and comparable prices. They essentially wanted to win the pricing game and lead with their brand. Surprisingly, they slightly
increased the price of their discount brand by a mere 6 cents. This was probably to restrict the range in which the pricing war could be played by other
players.
Industry Outlook for Philip Morris
Surely with the consumer behavior shift and the increasingly hostile regulatory climate described above, Philip Morris views the industry margins
becoming thinner and realizes

Essay about James Joyce's Araby
Araby
Even under the best of circumstances the transition from childhood into adulthood is a long and dreary journey that all young men must encounter in
life. A road that involves many hardships and sacrifices along the way; and when that road is a lonely one, with only oneself to rely upon, thehardship
intensifies to become destructive to those involved. This is particularly true in the story "Araby," where James Joyce portrays the trials and tribulations
of a young boy's initiation into adulthood. Many of the boy's problems lie in not being able to come to grips with the harsh reality that no matter how

Throughout the story, Joyce portrays many symbols to show the boys transition into becoming an adult. Joyce says, "I sat staring at the clock for some
time and, when its ticking began to irritate me, I left the room." The ticking of the clock symbolized the long and frustrating journey into adulthood;
and we see from the fact that it irritated him, shows his desire to become an adult already. Later in the story, Joyce portrays an instance where the
boy desires to be a man even though he is not; "From the front window I saw my companions playing below in the street." It is as if he is an adult,
towering over his friends, looking down upon them when in reality they are the same age as he is.
After receiving money and permission from his uncle to go to the bazaar, we see another symbol used to show his lonely road into maturity. Joyce
says, "I took my seat in a third class carriage of a deserted train. After an intolerable delay the train moved out of the station slowly." The train is the
symbol used here to show the long journey that is taking place in his life. The fact that it was deserted and that the train moved slowly shows that the
transition into adulthood is a very slow moving time in a boy's life, which can be very lonely at times; "I remained alone in the bare carriage."
Joyce is not portraying how adolescents can act

The World War II Era
It is striking how much our world has changed in the last 75 years; our technology as well as our knowledge has advanced by leaps and bounds. The
World War II era was a time of rampant progression for America on many levels. Women entered the workforce out of necessity, and as a result
women became a driving force in the economy: they made money, and they spent it. Marketing agencies understood this and they began tailoring their
advertisements toward women. When war broke out and we began shipping our men off to battle, marketing agencies used the American people's
sympathies toward our soldiers to sell more products. With the limited knowledge about the products they were selling, advertisements from this era
focused more on how the item made them "cool", how it was "good for you", and how it was the better than the rest – all without truly understanding
the product, or the long – term effects it might create. Modern advertising has changed dramatically, with the advancement of so many fields; we have
more information about the products that are being sold, and there are many more regulations about truth in advertising. It's a completely different
playing field for marketing firms today, they have to employ far more creativity to hook an audience and get their message across than our
counterparts in the WWII era. Advertising has a powerful role in shaping the culture of a nation, and has the power to change self–perception. Cigarette
advertisements are one of the best

already encoded in their DNA. However, with the 43 girls, the effect of testosterone was nil on the behavior of the girls. They therefore did not act like

Essay about Don't Touch My Mama
"Don't touch my Doritos." For the 2010 Super Bowl, Doritos put out a commercial that was titled "House Rules". In this commercial a young man
comes to take a beautiful young, single mother out for their first date. While the mother is out of the room putting up the flowers the man brought, the
man sits down to socialize with the son. As the man sits down he picks up one of the son's Doritos, and just as he is about to put the chip in his mouth
the son slaps him. After slapping the man the son says, "Don't touch my mama, and don't touch my Doritos." This 2010 Super Bowl Doritos

Another technique this commercial uses is what the camera focuses on. When the camera is focused on the mother's back side from the mans' point of
view the creators are telling the audience what is really on the man's mind, and why the son says don't touch my mama. The creators do the same thing
with the bowl of Doritos. The camera also zooms in on the game controller in the boy's hand. Through putting the focus on the boy dropping the
game controller, the creators lets the audience know that things have just gotten serious and that something is about to happen. Aside from the
different types of appeals, pathos and ethos, and camera focus; the creators are sending a couple of messages with the son's actions. The first
message is to get your own Doritos and not take someone else's. This message comes across when the boy slaps the man and tells him to put his
Dorito chip back in the bowl. By the son not being willing to share even one of his Doritos, the creators are telling the viewers not to share their
Doritos with any one. The second message is that Doritos are just as important as mothers. The viewers can see this as the boy not only tells the man
not to touch his mother but also to keep his hands off the boys Doritos. By doing this the boy in a way puts the Doritos on the same level of is mother
making the chips just as import as the woman who gave birth to him. These techniques and hidden messages of the commercial make the commercial

Hegemonic Masculinity : Characters And Plot Of The Popular...
The characters and plot of the popular sitcom Two and a half men are an excellent representation of how the production of hegemonic masculinity and
subordinate masculinity in the show reinforce the idea of hegemonic masculinity as the only real form of manliness accepted by society's standards of
an "ideal man." Effeminate masculinity, a subordinate form of masculinity, is not represented in the show in a positive light rather, it is mocked. The
characters that play these roles are Charlie, who plays the hyper masculine role, and Alan, who plays the effeminate masculinity role. Alan's role is

"In accounts grounded in sex–role theory, such as that by Harris, "masculinity" identifies cultural "norms" and "scripts" which set standards for and
thus influence men's behaviour." (Flood 205) It is through the process of socialization and interaction that we learn what attitudes, behaviours, norms
and scripts make a man 'manly' enough to be respected in society. Not every society and time period has the same standards on what it means to be
masculine and what traits a man must possess in order to be 'culturally honoured' or be considered the 'ideal' man by society; therefore, "masculinity is
historically contingent on so many factors." (Spring) In the West, for example, an 'ideal' man in society must be able to supress his emotions, be
financially/socially stable, be successful, and Caucasian. South Asian countries have other standards set by society of what it means to be masculine.
Throughout the show, although latent, Alan attempts to be more like his brother by acting in hyper masculine ways. According to sociologist Erving
Goffman, the definition of hegemonic masculinity is the following: "a young, married, white, urban, northern, heterosexual, Protestant, father, of
college education, fully employed, [...] Any male who fails to qualify in any one of these ways is likely to view himself–during moments at least–as
unworthy, incomplete, and inferior." (Kimmel and Holler, 9). Charlie is an example of a man who fits the

Demand For A Product Or Service Essay
Demand for a product or service can be defined as the amount of a particular economic good or service that a consumer or group of consumers will
want to purchase at a given price over a specific period of time. The demand is usually downward sloping, since consumers will want to buy more as
the price decreases. Demand for a good or service is determined by different factors other than price, such as the price of substitute goods and
complementary goods. In extreme cases, demand may be completely unrelated to price, or nearly infinite at a given price (in the case of the tobacco
industry) (Beardshaw, 1991).
According to Philp, Dan and Galt (2009) it could be deduced that demand relative to the tobacco industry is caused by a number of aspects in which
the key driver is the price of the cigarettes. Newport menthol 100s average price for a pack is $4.70 and a carton cost around $42.00. This price is
relative to it's competitor Marlboro menthol red cigarettes, which is the number one cigarette of all time. Marlboro menthol red average price for a pack
is $4.91 and a carton cost around $44.00. The price of Newports is set because it's a brand loyalty product. For example, in the clothes market,
individuals would think of what Calvin Klein's would cost. If Parada sell 30% cheaper, then they would consider paying a much lower price.
Cigarette valuing has long been a champion amongst the most fundamental advancing frameworks utilized by the tobacco relationship as a part of the

Crying Is The Companion Of The Spirit And The Cure Of Soul
Crying is the companion of the spirit and the cure of the soul . In life's ups and down , tears are the closest and most loyal to the heart . When one
is melancholic , s/he cries , and when one is jovial , s/he cries too . However , some people consider shedding tears is exclusive for women , who are
modest , compassionate , sensitive , soft , nurturing , intuitive , sentimental , docile , inconclusive and emotional but prohibited on men who are
supposed to be aggressive , sturdy , rational , emotionally detached , power–loving and focused on potential and authority . On the contrary , an
opposing party interferes , protesting and defending man's natural right to express his feelings . Throughout history , men's crying has always been a
controversy , but quite the majority of people – males , females , specialists and religious people – acknowledge shedding tears as the most natural phase
of man's face expressions that reveal strength , sentiment , love and respect .
The ability to accept men's crying has varied between different periods in history . To begin , the Bible is full of weeping . For example , Joseph burst
into tears several times , in which his tears were tears of rage , tears of pain and tears of sensitivity , " .. his sobs were so loud that the Egyptians could
hear. Moreover , among Greek Heroes , tears were lavish, such as Achilles in The Illiad . In medieval Europe , the elite would conceal their emotions
because they felt forced to do so , but this

The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher 's ' Bewitched '...
Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright's
Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the "man who
invented the sitcom," having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher's finest
works include "Bewitched" and "I Love Lucy", classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time, even
with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began
from William Asher's time.
Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient
housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting,
patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their children and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although
television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I argue that the representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Using both sitcoms
from the 1950's and today I plan to prove that an emphasis on masculinity and male dominance have remained a common underlying theme since

Comparing Sexuality in Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage...
Sexuality of the Frontierswoman in Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage and Doctorow's Welcome to Hard Times
The presentation of femininity in Doctorow's Welcome to Hard Times is a strong departure from the heroine of Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage.
Through the metaphor of the gun as the embodiment of masculinity, both authors closely examine the complexities of the sexualized relationship of a
frontierswoman to the men of her society. Doctorow mirrors the tensions present in Grey's novel though Molly acts as an extraordinarily different vision
of what the West required of a woman than Jane Withersteen. Both novels reach a sexual climax as the heroine engages the men of her society in a
violent action of blood and birth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book opens with the failure of Blue's manhood. He, bearing the title of 'Mayor,' failed to have both the courage and the skill to protect the town,
especially the women, from the Bad Man. Molly mocks his failure even as she watches Blue "fill the cylinders of [his] gun": "Christ that Bad Man's
the only man in town!...I can't believe it...using a lady, for Godsake, marching brave behind a lady's skirts" (Doctorow 16). This moment, with Blue
symbolically taking up his manhood and with Molly simultaneously deriding his status as a man, encompasses much of the tension between the failed
masculinity of the citizens of Hard Times and their feminine counterparts. Ultimately, Blue's gun fails him and he is saved from the Bad Man's
superior skill and ruthlessness only by Molly's "struggling and pulling" (19).
Doctorow's portrayal of failed masculinity as the founding sin of Hard Times contrasts strongly with the more traditional Western. Zane Grey'sRiders of
the Purple Sage is a close parallel in many ways to the opening of Welcome to Hard Times. The scene opens with the Bad Man of the piece, Tull,
preparing to whip Venters. Venters' failure to defend himself comes as a result of surrendering his guns to Jane's safekeeping. This symbolic castration
leaves him at the mercy of the other men, and leaving him "behind a lady's skirts" (Doctorow 16). Jane risks herself and places herself in the enmity of
the community by defending

Essay on How Do Gender Roles Get Portrayed in Disney Films?
Introduction
A.Definition of Gender Roles
A gender role consists of characteristics that refer to a set of social and behavioral norms that are widely considered appropriate for either males or
females. Gender roles are different throughout society and cultures. One gains gender roles unconsciously, consciously, or genetically due to cultural
rules (Princeton).
B.How film characters are seen by the audience
Many people view women as weak in hopeless and males as strong and heroic in films. Male characters are seen to be more physical, functional,
sexual, smart, and independent. Female characters are seen as dependent, weak, quiet, graceful, and innocent (Planned Parenthood). For example, in the

B. "Gender Roll Portrayal and the Disney Princesses" By Dawn England, Lara Descartes, Melissa Collier–Meek This article talks about a study done
on all Disney movies and the coding of the male and feminine characteristics of Princesses and Princes. To name a few for male characteristics they

characteristics they looked for; submissiveness, whether the woman was ashamed, was a victim, and asks for help or advice. The researchers ended up

middle movies (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Mulan), and the most current (The Princess and the Frog).

Gran Torino Essay

'Gran Torino' is a film full of symbols of hope and redemption. Discuss.
In his film 'Gran Torino', Clint Eastwood tells the story of an unlikely relationship between Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski and his Hmong
neighbours Thao and Sue. The film explores the possibility of redemption, "second chances", and the hope that comes from having a positive future.
Both Walt and Thao experience redemption in the film. Walt is saved from the guilt of murder and broken relationships. Ultimately, Walt finds "peace"
with himself, with others and with God. Walt's young neighbour Thao is rescued from a future of crime and violence, and the shame of attempted theft.

For example, Kennedy the construction supervisor asks Walt when he can have "the keys" to his Gran Torino, and looks down on Thao for getting a
lift. Without a car, Thao is dependent and still a boy. When Walt lends him the Gran Torino to take Youa on a date, he is giving Thao independence and
the possibility of a girlfriend. Furthermore, the Gran Torino represents being a genuine Americanman. Walt built the car when he worked for Ford, and
despises the "Jap–burners" that his son Mitch drives around in and sells. Likewise, Spider (an 'anti–citizen') drives a white Honda in every scene he
appears in, except the last one. When Walt leaves the Gran Torino to Thao in his will, he is giving him more than a car. He is giving him a reward
for work, a source of prestige, independence, and an American identity. The closing scene of the film shows Thao driving the car down an esplanade, a
young man with a future, and hope.
To Walt, the reason he got his medal of valour wasn't for a good reason. It was because he shot a Korean. After the war, Walts was left broken and
scarred and especially after Dorothys death, Walt had many issues he needed to solve. Fr suggested he should do a confession and that it would help
to heal him. You never really hear about the medal much but at the end of the film when Walt does a confession, even though it wasn't the confession
Fr was expecting, Walt has been healed. He sees what he has to do to serve and

Summary : ' The Prairie ' Cowboys '

24 September 2015 Pave the Prairie: Cowboys in Manhattan As we charge headlong into the twenty–first century, things have changed. Sweatshops are
illegal, cars are a near necessity, and more women now graduate college than men. The post–industrial era economy is flourishing in the United States,
but not everyone is flourishing in it. All across America coalmines are empty, railroad spikes and sledgehammers are rusting, and straw cowboy hats

These rules foster a certain type of man. One who takes charge and leads, one whose primary concern is, "Being a Man Among Men," (Kimmel 464).
However, it also creates a person who suppresses his feelings in fear of being labeled as effeminate. The stigma dictates that attributes typically
associated with women are unmasculine, so as boys turn to men, "Along the way they suppress all the feelings they associate with the
maternal––compassion, nurturance, vulnerability, dependency," (Kimmel 469). This pattern of suppression has not changed much in recent years.
Society still enforces the idea that men should be strong and stoic, when these traits are no longer what are needed to be successful in the workforce.
Men are failing in school. While it may not be all men, as time progresses it has become apparent that women dominate our school system when
given equal opportunities to participate. Men are not performing worse in school now compared to forty years ago, the problem is that they are not
performing better. If men found themselves with, "'their eyes glazed over,'" (Rosin 473) they once could drop out, choose not to pursue a higher
education, and enter the workforce through unionized labor jobs that suited them much better. Today, these jobs are disintegrating, while, "Of the 15
job categories projected to grow the most in the next decade in the U.S., all but two are occupied primarily by women," (Rosin 475). Many men have

particular, those associated with the representation of the cowboy––and questions the burden of gender roles that are imposed upon men. In an effort to

By establishing the depiction of cowboys within the advertisements, she puts the audience on the same page as she and prepares them for the rest of
her argument. Her essay is not only about cowboys, it is, quite literally, about men. Indeed, throughout the essay, Ehrlich uses cowboys to represent all
men. The advertisements responsible for the misconceptions of the cowboy are developed in New York City, where her article was published, and
Ehrlich uses this fact to juxtapose the metropolitan origins of these campaigns with the day–to–day realities of the cowboy and the genuine hardships
they encounter. Ehrlich reveals many of the less romantic and appealing details about the job: miniscule pay, extremely challenging labor, burdensome
emotional torment, and constant care for dangerous animals. Ehrlich starts by stating, "When I'm in New York but feeling lonely for Wyoming...[I'm
given a] reminder of the ranchers and cowboys I've ridden with for the last eight years" and shows her audience this topic is personal to her (198).
She immediately establishes credibility: she lives in New York but grew up in Wyoming––around actual cowboys. She says this with the intent to show
she not only knows of the "traditional cowboy" that is depicted in subway ads all around New York, but also is very familiar with the real cowboys of
Wyoming. By establishing this credibility, her audience can immediately trust her argument due to her

Analysis Of Viola Hastings 's ' She 's The Man '
a)First Topic
Viola Hastings, is the protagonist in the film She's The Man. She is a female soccer player at Cornwall University, until the school cuts her soccer
team off from the after school extracurricular activities program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she
impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest her capability is if she is unable to join the male
soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola's character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she's an athletic woman who
remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile, delicate and helpless woman rather than
goal–oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain attractive to the male audience and characters in the film.
Viola's devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other adult females in the debutante society. She lacks
several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin's back and later removes
popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. There is a later scene in the film when the debutantes are
having dinner, Viola is chewing the chicken with her mouth open and Cheryl, the debutante coach, reminds her of her manners by saying "Viola,

Both of these articles are accurate examples as to a potential reason of females having specific college majors. Social norms may have an impact on
college major choice for women as well. Women tend to be less motivated by the promise of monetary success and more by their passions. Our survey
results supported this social norm because the vast majority of females said that they chose their major because they enjoy that field of study, whereas
the vast majority of males said they chose their major to obtain a high salary.
Males:
Through thorough research and survey analysis we were able to conclude that there tends to be a higher population of male students pursuing
Engineering and Business majors compared to all other college majors. Not only is this true at North Carolina State University, but we also found
this true for other universities in the US as well. Out of 51 males who completed our survey, roughly 22 percent informed us they were enrolled in

The Gendered Struggle: Comparing and Contrasting between...
The comparisons between Medea and Hamlet are numerous. Both are stories about revenge that end in the controversial main character sacrificing
everything in order to preserve one of the most important markers of identity of their time: honor. Medea was a controversial character in ancient
times not only because of her filicide, but because she asserted that women have honor, an idea that was not the norm in Greece. In sharp contrast to
her is Hamlet, the tragic hero that was honor–bound by his society to avenge his father's death, yet only does so at the expense of his entire kingdom.
The difference in how society treats Hamlet and Medea in their quests to preserve their honor result in tragedy for both characters, as Hamlet lets the ...

A new dimension is added when one considers Hamlet's status as a prince and Claudius' status as king. Hamlet is caught in a moral dilemma:
society demands vengeance for his father, yet to do so also constitutes as treason. But princes are also expected to be the paragons of manliness,
meaning that Hamlet is held to an even higher standard than typical of the age. He is expected to be the ideal of manhood and this translates to his
honor as well. If Hamlet's father was murdered, he must avenge him not only as a duty to his father, but also as a duty to his country. These
complications with his revenge leave Hamlet conflicted to the point of insanity, either genuine or feigned. A sharp contrast to Hamlet's turmoil, Medea
defies traditional feminine values of her time to instead regain her honor, a concept that sharply contrasted with the Grecian belief that a woman, let
alone a barbarian woman, does not possess honor. This sense of honor is most strongly represented by Medea in her pronouncement from line 214 to
line 250 (Euripides). In this monologue, Medea describes a women's role in society as more difficult than that of a man's. As Grecian society gave man
authority over the woman using a man's more difficult roles in society as justification, this establishes woman on equal grounds as a man. This equality
also includes the inherit quality all male citizens

Male Gender Roles And Women
In society today, boys and girls are taught by those around them that there are but two ways only to live a life– the manly way and the feminine way–
and that to stray from one's designated role in the world is unacceptable. Men in particular suffer from the confinement of gender roles and are
exposed pitilessly to society's punishing repercussions if one chooses to defy his preordained position. I myself have felt the pungent sting of the male
gender role in my own life, having grown up alongside a twin brother who was about as "manly" as a boy can be. I can recall one day only a few years

precedent of aggression, barbarity, and dominance for men to follow to be perceived as "normal", effecting youth negatively and damaging one's
self–image. Men are influenced strongly everyday by the world around them to put aside traditionally feminine tendencies and behave like a man–
beginning, first and foremost, in the home. The household serves as a boy's initial introduction to the exclusive sector that is manhood. It is there
that they are brought up and reared to be the strapping, virile man they are destined to become. It is rare to find a boy who is not at least familiar

That men and women are on different wavelengths when it comes to communicating is probably not news to you. However, "Can We Talk?" the
cover story of the December issue of New Age Journal, provides some excellent new perspectives on this age–old problem. The author, Peggy Taylor,
interviewed sociolinguist Deborah Tannen, who has written a book called You Just Don 't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation. Tannen 's
research shows that the differences between the communication styles of men and women go far beyond mere socialization, and appear to be inherent
in the basic make up of each sex.
Tannen first noticed these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The woman begins to feel that her man doesn 't care about her because he won 't talk to her in a way that feels intimate.
It is important for women to understand that men 's communicating is all about status. Think about all those nature shows you 've ever seen on
PBS. The prime goal of male beasties is to be able to mate; to do this they must be powerful enough to challenge the lead males in the herd. As they
grow up, they bide their time by establishing a pecking order. When a beastie is big and strong enough to have most of the other males "under" him,
he is ready to take on the "old man." If he wins the fight, he gets to mate with the females of his choice (and they will mate only with him).
Tannen has found that human males behave in exactly the same way. She discussed the research of Marjorie Goodwin, who studied boys in
Philadelphia for a year and a half. "She found that boys give orders as a way of gaining social status. The high–status boys gave orders just to maintain
their dominance, not because they particularly needed the thing done. And the boys who were being told what to do were low status, by virtue of
doing what they were told."
This dynamic is important to remember when looking at another major area of miscommunication between men and women. Women cannot
understand the resistance men seem to have when asked for assistance or consideration of some kind or another. Women must remember the above
scenario and understand that, for men, doing what they

Rhetorical Analysis Paper: BudLight Advertisement
Budweiser is one of the best–known brands of beer in America. Their ads and commercials have always been known for being humorous and
entertaining. Millions of people look forward to seeing the Super Bowl half–time commercials mostly because of Budweiser's notorious commercials.
Budweiser takes advantage of its reputation and makes commercials that are witty and fun for people to watch. They incorporate humor and a certain
kind of sex appeal into their ads to sell their beer to men and send the message that there is nothing more pleasing in life than drinking Budweiser.
The rhetorical appeals are included in the BudLight ad to persuade the audience to drink BudLight. This BudLight ... Show more content on

The BudLight bottles are in the front, center of the ad to make sure that the audience can see the brand clearly so that they can remember the logo.
Behind the beer bottles, there is a young man enjoying his time on a beautiful island with two attractive women and of course, BudLight. This ad
makes the audience believe that this lavish lifestyle is possible as long as they have a BudLight with them. This picture gets imprinted into people's
minds and they are reminded of this ad every time they see a bottle of BudLight.
The advertisement's name is Port Paradise III. This title shows that this is just one of many places where one can go and enjoy a BudLight in the
company of beautiful women. If this is Port Paradise Three, then this means that there has to be a One and Two as well. With this title, the audience
realizes that the fun never ends as long as they drink BudLight.
It is incredible how advertisements can lure an audience into trying out their products. Certain advertisements and commercials may seem simple, but at
the same time, those are the ones that people remember and talk about. When people think about beer advertisements, they usually remember the ones
like this one because it demonstrates things that people want. This advertisement shows how BudLight is interconnected with Paradise and makes
people remember the picture. The luxurious aspect of this ad and the

Antigone Essay Throughout history, cultures from around the world has set hat standards for women to abide to. Up until the twentieth century,
women were viewed as second class citizens by society and had less freedom and rights than their male counterparts as compare today in the modern
world where women can be more involve in society. Although women still face discrimination such as the glass ceiling in the business corporate

Creon would never in a million suspected Antigone to have broken his law because Creon views women as being submissive to men and not brave
enough to do such as a bold act. Once the Guard capture Antigone caught in the act of trying to finish the burial of Polynieces, Creon is in disbelief
because the perpetrator of the 'crime' is not a man but a girl. When Creon asks Antigone if she bury her brother, she answers "I admit I did it. I won't
deny that." (Sophocles 500). She does not hesitate when she tell Creon that she bury actually she proudly admits what she did and justify her act
because it is the will of the gods which upset Creon even more " Here she again displays her proud contempt– having done the act, she boast of it"
(Sophocles 546–547). Creon does not even talk directly to Antigone at first but face the Chorus Leader because is still in shock a girl would be brave
enough to break the law and disobey him. Later Creon and Antigone began to argue whether or not it is right or wrong for Polyneices not to be bury.

Essay On Greasy Lake, A Critical Review

  • 1. Essay on Greasy Lake, a Critical Review In the short story Greasy Lake, Boyle told of the changing of boys to men in one night. When it was cool to be bad. Senior year in high school, 19 years old and stupid. Not having any real clue as to the real world works, Driving mom's cars using dad's money. In Greasy Lake, T.C. Boyle used the theme of being bad by using the different characters to symbolize someone always trying to be more than they really are. The biggest problem with being "bad" is the person on top always has someone wanting to knock him/her off his or her thrown. T.C. Boyle painted the picture nicely, "able to manage a ford with lousy shocks over a rutted and gutted blacktop road at 85 while rolling a joint." This clearly paints a picture of the ... They expected to "slap backs with a red–faced Tony, roughhouse a little" roughhousing to show how bad they are. After realizing the mistaken identity of the 57 Chevy was not a friend "There was no reasoning with this bad greasy character –clearly he was a man of action." This shows that although the author doesn't put it in print, they may have in fact tried to reason with another character they now consider "bad." When the new tougher "greasy character" kicked him with his Steele toed boot and chipped his "favorite tooth", like a Heavyweight boxer nearing the end of his career. He thought to himself "I was in a whole lot of trouble." This clearly showed that someone else was in charge. In order to regain some self respect, like rabid dogs, the wannabe's nipping at the heals of a giant; would do almost anything. The main character grabbed a tire iron from under his front seat of his car, "Bad characters always kept tire irons" "for such an occasion." The main character admits he hasn't been in a fight since the sixth grade yet feels the need to prove his testosterone true and grab the tire iron and hit the greasy character in the head. • 2. How Does Masculinity Affect Women We often see women affected by social norms and negatively represented but it's always good to look at the other side of the spectrum. Masculinity can deeply affect and cause issues in boys and young men. These issues are mainly emotional damages and the definition of what being a man is. On of the ways to fix this would be to better represent masculinity and widen the spectrum of what a man really is. First of all, the definition of what being a man is a central issue for young males. Paul Theroux talks about always liking being a man in his essay, "Being a Man." He points out that, "Fiction Вwriting is equated with a kind of dispirited failure and is only manly when it produces wealth – money is masculinity. So is drinking." This shows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Rebecca Walkers' "Putting Down the Gun," she states that, "When I asked him about making friends based on common interest rather than superficial categories, he got flustered. "You don't understand," he said huffily. "Boys talk about sports, like their matches and who scored what and stuff or they talk about new version... Tears welled up in her eyes. "I don't have anything to talk about." In this quote we can see the emotional damages of expectations in Walkers' eleven–year–old son. He has to pretend to be someone he is not in order to make a conversation with someone. This shows the pressures of masculinity on young males. The constraints of conversations has brought an eleven–year–old into tears about not fitting in. This shows a small spectrum of the psychological issues and damages on males. Paul Theroux also goes on to speak about the causes of the psychological problems males face in "Being a Man," he claims that, "how can one think about men without considering the terrible ambition of manliness?... It is a hideous and crippling lie, it not only insists on difference and connvies out superiority, it is also by its nature destructiveв”Ѓemotionally damaging and socially harmful." Theroux is trying to say that masculinity allows superiority and difference between men and women which causes damage between both gender and socially harm them. The act of making men and women seperate has caused a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Masculinity In Malboro Man Just like women are pressured by the need to act feminine, men are pressured by the need to act masculine. They have to prove themselves superior, independent, and physically powerful else they aren't seen as a proper man. Nearly every male is judged by this standard which constantly pressures them into roles they may not want to fulfill. Young boys and men within society constantly face the problem of having to meet the standards of the ideal man by having to prove their masculinity which limits the actions that they can perform and conceals their true personality. To begin with, men within society have to prove that their masculinity. This is seen within Leonard McCombe's picture, "Marlboro Man", which portrays a tough and rugged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within Theroux's same essay, he writes about how men who pursue creative arts, which are "obnoxious to the manly ideal", are negatively judged since there is "something wrong" with those who seek "uncompetitive and solitary" professions. Certain fields are seen as going against the male culture that has been established due to its implications of solitude and casual work that goes against the tough and competitive male. He further writes about how men are urged away from these unnatural behaviors by being placed in "sports, the Boy Scouts, or a boy's camp" (Theroux). Not only are some actions viewed negatively, but the pressure to do certain actions that promote masculinity exists as well. Rebecca Walker's essay, "Putting Down the Gun", describes her anecdotal observations of how her son feels the need to "enter sports or play violent games" in order to "fit in and draw attention" when he was otherwise ignored despite his other interest. The need to conform to the general stereotypes of a male, sports and violence, is promoted in Walker's situation since the interests of her son wasn't good enough. The limitations placed on men to promote their masculinity inhibits them showing who they really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Six Single Mother Myths Busted by Online Dating Essay 6 Single Mother Myths Busted by Online Dating Dating as a single mother is fraught with lots of potential hazard and stigma. Before online dating has become a craze, single moms who are hoping to find another chance at "happy ever after" usually do not get too much luck. The stigma that comes along with being a single mother drives real men away and makes it ultra impossible for single moms to get another shot at happiness. Only until the dawn of online dating did these single moms stumble upon real and ever–lasting love. Online dating has not only become a fad. It has become a tool for real men to get to know their dates without having to go through all the trouble, yet guaranteeing that they would soon sit at the dinner table with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is worth knowing that real men consider online dating because they, too, are longing for someone to genuinely care for them. Being a single mother gives off the idea that men just will never be in the top of their priorities, especially when there are children always groping for their mother's attention, not to mention the job, the kitchen sink, the stopped up toilet, etc. There are way too many rivals to compete against and discerning men would not go for any woman who can only promise her second–best attention and affection. 3. Single mothers are just never available. A single mother's schedule is never open. They are the kind to cancel dates at the last minute. How can you have a relationship with someone who cannot even be there? In order to make sure you of that rare shot to be loved again, single women need to invest time and effort. Most men are put off by the lack of time being returned to them by single mothers and this becomes bomb–ticker. With the advent of online dating, single mothers are able to commit their time to a man they really think finally deserves them. Single mothers have never been more available. 4. Single mothers are emotionally unavailable. Single mothers usually have their primary focus on her children. This is a negative thing for men who are unable to see beyond the naked eye. While some men are turned off by the single mom's unconditional attention to her children, real men see this as a plus, a positive character instead of a negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Companies would use ads to persuade the consumer into buying various goods or services that were being advertised. These propaganda agencies used a "you should buy it to fix your problem" mentality. The ads in today's society target certain age groups with a variety of aspects that might interest them into buying a product because they, the consumer, want to fit in and be a part of something. As the story point out, "The boy enjoyed the talk and sometimes felt he was allowed to hear all the secrets of the world, and was only mildly frustrated by the mysteries he could not understand. (p.218)" That means, the boy feel he is an adult when he sit with his father and listen to their conversation about women and some adult jokes. As it mentions, he can't understand everything they talked because he doesn't interested on the topics that they talk.so he is still immaturity at that time because he doesn't interest on that and has no idea about the meaning of the conversation. But he can understand the conversation like that is only for adult. Let's move on to the incident of the story, the boy was very childish after the incident happened and his act and thought was really a kid. • 7. The Male And Female Gender Through Life Experiences Matthew Drozd How Do We Know What Gender We Are? Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando, and Thomas Page McBee's memoir, Man Alive, aim to define the male and female gender through life experiences. Virginia Woolf uses the eponymous protagonist, Orlando, to define the freedom that men have within society while women face many societal restrictions. Within Man Alive, Thomas, a transgendered man, experiences similar freedoms and restrictions that Orlando experiences through his experiences within society. Man Alive is the journey of Thomas Page McBee's transition fromwoman to man; it focuses not on his physical change but on his mental change. Orlando was placed in a predicament that allowed him to experience life both as man and woman. The first thirty years of Orlando's life was spent as a man then he was permanently transformed into a woman. Almost parallel to Orlando's transition experience, Thomas was also in a predicament that allowed him to experience life as a man and woman. Thomas, born Page, goes through a transition to become male. Orlando and Thomas both aimed at trying to figure out who they were in society; Thomas was trying to find what kind of man he wanted to become and Orlando was trying to find what kind of woman she was becoming. For example, if female Orlando was promiscuous, she would be heavily criticized by her community while male Orlando received no censure. Some believe that becoming a man is just referring to a coming of age, and it somewhat is, however there is more. In the short story "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" by Richard white, Dave, the main character is a young boy trying to become a man and is searching for the key. However, there are certain ways to do things in society, and there are ways to not, and both of these ways have their benefits and consequences. In this short story Dave sees the gun as a symbol of manhood, and it will set him free of his childhood. Throughout the short story the reader can tell that Dave is eager to leave his childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dave still shows thoughts pertaining to the attainable manliness of having a gun by thoughts of shooting at Mr. Hawkins's house. It seems as if Dave's thoughts are blurred and all he sees is the key to becoming a man is having a gun and using it so he is doing this as much as he can along with his crave for power, even though it is just causing others to have even less respect for a reckless irresponsible child with a gun. However, Dave's wishes were still granted when he is forced to start maturing into being a man more rapidly than others and having to take responsibility for his actions. Every choice has its benefits and its consequences, unluckily, with Dave's choices the consequences greatly outweighed the benefits that were being received. Dave had the wrong idea and believed that a gun could symbolize becoming a man whenever all it actually did is rush him into something that he is not ready for, and cause him to do wrong in the eyes of his family and the society. Back to the question, "What does it mean for someone to become a man?" One could say that Dave eventually learned his lesson by the end of the short story that you cannot push respect upon yourself by others with force. Becoming a man is by definition when "a person with the qualities often associated with males such as bravery, spirit, or toughness" grows out of their childhood and matures into adulthood. When ... Gender Stereotypes in Othello Essay Stereotypes are commonly held generalized beliefs that most or all individuals sharing a given trait also should or do share other attributes assumed to be associated with aspects such as race, religion, and physical attribute. While stereotypes can erroneously shape people's views of others, they can also influence the stereotyped individuals' behavior as people often attempt to conform to these flawed images, especially in regards to gender stereotypes. Shakespeare's great play Othello uses its main characters to embody the characteristics of the stereotypical females and males according to society's liking. The stereotypical woman is loyal and faithful to her husband, while the male stereotype possesses strength, control, and dominance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare mocks society's extreme measures by suggesting death as the sole option for Othello when he fails to understand that Desdemona may not fit female stereotypes. Without the ability to label her, Othello fails to "assert Desdemona's chastity and corruptibility simultaneously" and "murders Desdemona to redeem her from degradation" (Neely). The characters, like many people, struggle to alter views that have been so firmly pressed into their minds. In this way, Shakespeare negatively comments on humans' inabilities to see beyond what society tells them and to comprehend truths unique to a specific person rather than his gender roles. Shakespeare uses the characters Desdemona and Othello to display how people become accustomed to the gender identities that society defines for them. Therefore, both characters, as depicted by their deaths, fail to understand each other personally as individuals instead of as the stereotypical man or woman that is being presented. Although misperceptions about the other gender are dangerous causes of downfall, flawed views among one's own gender are also great contributors to destruction. Othello and Desdemona best exemplify this notion. Desdemona presents herself as pure, compassionate, and understanding towards everyone, especially Othello. Our society affects men in a way that women wouldn't understand. Women think that men have it easy all the time but do they really? They face issues just like women do. A central issue facing boys and young men is that they are forced into being sporty, dull–witted, and physically appealing. Every boy and young man is asked if they ever played sports and most say yes but when they are forced into being in a sport, it is difficult to want to say yes since they forced into it. You would think that sports would teach men to be respectful but as said in Source 2, "Everyone is aware of how few in number are the athletes who behave like gentlemen. Just as high school basketball teaches you how to be a poor loser, the manly attitude towards sports seems to be little more than a recipe for creating bad marriages, social misfits, moral degenerВates, sadists, latent rapists and just plain louts." • 12. The Philip Morris Tobacco Company Essay Phillip Morris Phillip Morris The Philip Morris tobacco company started in 1847 on a small street in London (Sanders, Wisse, & Van, 2015). One of the primary goals is to be a socially creditworthy company, at both local and global level. Consequently this is the reason Philip Morris had passion for social performance. They began as a very small family business specializing in hand rolled cigarettes. In 1902, the company moved to New York City and merged. Even though the company stayed small by 1960 it was the sixth largest company in the United States. The company acquired popularity using their Marlboro Man advertising campaign. The Marlboro Man brought Phillip Morris to the top of the industry. Marlboro used the image of a rugged cowboy enjoying a cigarette on horseback quickly adapt men into enjoying their brand. The success of the advertisement was incredible. In 1954 Marlboro sales accounted for $154 million in cigarette sold (Stevenson, & Proctor, 2008). Phillip Morris growth was rapid in the United States in 1983. Manufacturers could not understand how ammonia improved the taste of tobacco. The tobacco company discovered that ammonia would also increase the tobacco volume in cigarettes. From there, the company began to grow into other businesses expanding on its outside market. Goals of Philip Morris Strategy Philip Morris needed a aggressive competitive response to tacklethe threats of: declining market share, increasing share of discount brands, regulation, and RJR's promotions and price cuts. They decided to aggressively attack the existing discount brands and make the Philip Morris brand significantly more price competitive. Philip Morris effectively cut price by 20%, creating 2 tiers of cigarette pricing (from 3 tiers before). Their premium products were now significantly more competitive, compared with the discount brands due to their reduced price and existing strong brand image. Philip Morris were betting that a large portion of consumers would compare their premium product as price competitive with the discount brands, and would chose Marlboro due to its superior brand image and comparable prices. They essentially wanted to win the pricing game and lead with their brand. Surprisingly, they slightly increased the price of their discount brand by a mere 6 cents. Throughout the story, Joyce portrays many symbols to show the boys transition into becoming an adult. Joyce says, "I sat staring at the clock for some time and, when its ticking began to irritate me, I left the room." The ticking of the clock symbolized the long and frustrating journey into adulthood; and we see from the fact that it irritated him, shows his desire to become an adult already. Later in the story, Joyce portrays an instance where the boy desires to be a man even though he is not; "From the front window I saw my companions playing below in the street." It is as if he is an adult, towering over his friends, looking down upon them when in reality they are the same age as he is. After receiving money and permission from his uncle to go to the bazaar, we see another symbol used to show his lonely road into maturity. Joyce says, "I took my seat in a third class carriage of a deserted train. After an intolerable delay the train moved out of the station slowly." The train is the symbol used here to show the long journey that is taking place in his life. The fact that it was deserted and that the train moved slowly shows that the transition into adulthood is a very slow moving time in a boy's life, which can be very lonely at times; "I remained alone in the bare carriage." • 17. The World War II Era It is striking how much our world has changed in the last 75 years; our technology as well as our knowledge has advanced by leaps and bounds. The World War II era was a time of rampant progression for America on many levels. Women entered the workforce out of necessity, and as a result women became a driving force in the economy: they made money, and they spent it. Marketing agencies understood this and they began tailoring their advertisements toward women. When war broke out and we began shipping our men off to battle, marketing agencies used the American people's sympathies toward our soldiers to sell more products. With the limited knowledge about the products they were selling, advertisements from this era focused more on how the item made them "cool", how it was "good for you", and how it was the better than the rest – all without truly understanding the product, or the long – term effects it might create. Modern advertising has changed dramatically, with the advancement of so many fields; we have more information about the products that are being sold, and there are many more regulations about truth in advertising. It's a completely different playing field for marketing firms today, they have to employ far more creativity to hook an audience and get their message across than our counterparts in the WWII era. (Flood 205) It is through the process of socialization and interaction that we learn what attitudes, behaviours, norms and scripts make a man 'manly' enough to be respected in society. Not every society and time period has the same standards on what it means to be masculine and what traits a man must possess in order to be 'culturally honoured' or be considered the 'ideal' man by society; therefore, "masculinity is historically contingent on so many factors." • 22. Demand For A Product Or Service Essay Demand for a product or service can be defined as the amount of a particular economic good or service that a consumer or group of consumers will want to purchase at a given price over a specific period of time. The demand is usually downward sloping, since consumers will want to buy more as the price decreases. Demand for a good or service is determined by different factors other than price, such as the price of substitute goods and complementary goods. In extreme cases, demand may be completely unrelated to price, or nearly infinite at a given price (in the case of the tobacco industry) (Beardshaw, 1991). According to Philp, Dan and Galt (2009) it could be deduced that demand relative to the tobacco industry is caused by a number of aspects in which the key driver is the price of the cigarettes. Newport menthol 100s average price for a pack is $4.70 and a carton cost around $42.00. This price is relative to it's competitor Marlboro menthol red cigarettes, which is the number one cigarette of all time. Marlboro menthol red average price for a pack is $4.91 and a carton cost around $44.00. The price of Newports is set because it's a brand loyalty product. • 24. The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher 's ' Bewitched '... Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright's Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the "man who invented the sitcom," having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher's finest works include "Bewitched" and "I Love Lucy", classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time, even with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher's time. Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting, patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their children and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I argue that the representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Sexuality of the Frontierswoman in Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage and Doctorow's Welcome to Hard Times The presentation of femininity in Doctorow's Welcome to Hard Times is a strong departure from the heroine of Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage. Through the metaphor of the gun as the embodiment of masculinity, both authors closely examine the complexities of the sexualized relationship of a frontierswoman to the men of her society. Doctorow mirrors the tensions present in Grey's novel though Molly acts as an extraordinarily different vision of what the West required of a woman than Jane Withersteen. Both novels reach a sexual climax as the heroine engages the men of her society in a violent action of blood and birth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book opens with the failure of Blue's manhood. He, bearing the title of 'Mayor,' failed to have both the courage and the skill to protect the town, especially the women, from the Bad Man. Molly mocks his failure even as she watches Blue "fill the cylinders of [his] gun": "Christ that Bad Man's the only man in town!...I can't believe it...using a lady, for Godsake, marching brave behind a lady's skirts" (Doctorow 16). This moment, with Blue symbolically taking up his manhood and with Molly simultaneously deriding his status as a man, encompasses much of the tension between the failed masculinity of the citizens of Hard Times and their feminine counterparts. Ultimately, Blue's gun fails him and he is saved from the Bad Man's superior skill and ruthlessness only by Molly's "struggling and pulling" (19). Doctorow's portrayal of failed masculinity as the founding sin of Hard Times contrasts strongly with the more traditional Western. Zane Grey'sRiders of the Purple Sage is a close parallel in many ways to the opening of Welcome to Hard Times. The scene opens with the Bad Man of the piece, Tull, preparing to whip Venters. Venters' failure to defend himself comes as a result of surrendering his guns to Jane's safekeeping. Sweatshops are illegal, cars are a near necessity, and more women now graduate college than men. The post–industrial era economy is flourishing in the United States, but not everyone is flourishing in it. All across America coalmines are empty, railroad spikes and sledgehammers are rusting, and straw cowboy hats slowly rot. One who takes charge and leads, one whose primary concern is, "Being a Man Among Men," (Kimmel 464). However, it also creates a person who suppresses his feelings in fear of being labeled as effeminate. The stigma dictates that attributes typically associated with women are unmasculine, so as boys turn to men, "Along the way they suppress all the feelings they associate with the maternal––compassion, nurturance, vulnerability, dependency," (Kimmel 469). This pattern of suppression has not changed much in recent years. Society still enforces the idea that men should be strong and stoic, when these traits are no longer what are needed to be successful in the workforce. Men are failing in school. While it may not be all men, as time progresses it has become apparent that women dominate our school system when given equal opportunities to participate. Men are not performing worse in school now compared to forty years ago, the problem is that they are not performing better. If men found themselves with, "'their eyes glazed over,'" (Rosin 473) they once could drop out, choose not to pursue a higher education, and enter the workforce through unionized labor jobs that suited them much better. Today, these jobs are disintegrating, while, "Of the 15 job categories projected to grow the most in the next decade in the U.S., all but two are occupied primarily by women," (Rosin 475). Many of these stereotypes are propagated by the prejudice and false assumptions prevalent in the American advertising industry. In her article About Men, Gretel Ehrlich exposes a variety of these fallacies––in particular, those associated with the representation of the cowboy––and questions the burden of gender roles that are imposed upon men. By establishing the depiction of cowboys within the advertisements, she puts the audience on the same page as she and prepares them for the rest of her argument. Her essay is not only about cowboys, it is, quite literally, about men. Indeed, throughout the essay, Ehrlich uses cowboys to represent all men. The advertisements responsible for the misconceptions of the cowboy are developed in New York City, where her article was published, and Ehrlich uses this fact to juxtapose the metropolitan origins of these campaigns with the day–to–day realities of the cowboy and the genuine hardships they encounter. Ehrlich reveals many of the less romantic and appealing details about the job: miniscule pay, extremely challenging labor, burdensome emotional torment, and constant care for dangerous animals. Ehrlich starts by stating, "When I'm in New York but feeling lonely for Wyoming...[I'm given a] reminder of the ranchers and cowboys I've ridden with for the last eight years" and shows her audience this topic is personal to her (198). She immediately establishes credibility: she lives in New York but grew up in Wyoming––around actual cowboys. She is a female soccer player at Cornwall University, until the school cuts her soccer team off from the after school extracurricular activities program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest her capability is if she is unable to join the male soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola's character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she's an athletic woman who remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile, delicate and helpless woman rather than goal–oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain attractive to the male audience and characters in the film. Viola's devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other adult females in the debutante society. She lacks several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin's back and later removes popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. There is a later scene in the film when the debutantes are having dinner, Viola is chewing the chicken with her mouth open and Cheryl, the debutante coach, reminds her of her manners by saying "Viola, darling. Both are stories about revenge that end in the controversial main character sacrificing everything in order to preserve one of the most important markers of identity of their time: honor. Medea was a controversial character in ancient times not only because of her filicide, but because she asserted that women have honor, an idea that was not the norm in Greece. In sharp contrast to her is Hamlet, the tragic hero that was honor–bound by his society to avenge his father's death, yet only does so at the expense of his entire kingdom. The difference in how society treats Hamlet and Medea in their quests to preserve their honor result in tragedy for both characters, as Hamlet lets the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A new dimension is added when one considers Hamlet's status as a prince and Claudius' status as king. Hamlet is caught in a moral dilemma: society demands vengeance for his father, yet to do so also constitutes as treason. But princes are also expected to be the paragons of manliness, meaning that Hamlet is held to an even higher standard than typical of the age. He is expected to be the ideal of manhood and this translates to his honor as well. If Hamlet's father was murdered, he must avenge him not only as a duty to his father, but also as a duty to his country. These complications with his revenge leave Hamlet conflicted to the point of insanity, either genuine or feigned. A sharp contrast to Hamlet's turmoil, Medea defies traditional feminine values of her time to instead regain her honor, a concept that sharply contrasted with the Grecian belief that a woman, let alone a barbarian woman, does not possess honor. This sense of honor is most strongly represented by Medea in her pronouncement from line 214 to line 250 (Euripides). In this monologue, Medea describes a women's role in society as more difficult than that of a man's. As Grecian society gave man authority over the woman using a man's more difficult roles in society as justification, this establishes woman on equal grounds as a man. Men are influenced strongly everyday by the world around them to put aside traditionally feminine tendencies and behave like a man– beginning, first and foremost, in the home. The household serves as a boy's initial introduction to the exclusive sector that is manhood. The prime goal of male beasties is to be able to mate; to do this they must be powerful enough to challenge the lead males in the herd. As they grow up, they bide their time by establishing a pecking order. When a beastie is big and strong enough to have most of the other males "under" him, he is ready to take on the "old man." If he wins the fight, he gets to mate with the females of his choice (and they will mate only with him). Tannen has found that human males behave in exactly the same way. She discussed the research of Marjorie Goodwin, who studied boys in Philadelphia for a year and a half. "She found that boys give orders as a way of gaining social status. The high–status boys gave orders just to maintain their dominance, not because they particularly needed the thing done. And the boys who were being told what to do were low status, by virtue of doing what they were told."
