The student analyzed Avril Lavigne's music video for "Girlfriend" in which a happy couple runs into a girl dressed all in black who tries to sabotage their relationship by flirting with the boy and getting between them at various points. The locations and costumes highlight the differences between the geeky girl and the girl in black. By the end, the girl in black succeeds in getting the boy, leaving the geeky girl alone, possibly representing overcoming her alter ego and sticking with who she feels comfortable with.

Amy Grace Hewitt<br />Video Choice - Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend<br />Video Analysis<br />During this project I will start analyzing a variety of different music video to help me and my partner get an idea on what our music video can involve. I will begin researching a music video by Avril Lavigne. <br />From watching the start of the music video you can see that a couple (guys dressed slightly punky and a girl who is dressed as a geek) who seem pretty happy in each other’s company who then run into a girl who is dressed in all black (who you immediately know is the same person who is playing the other girl in the video) who comes across as nasty and selfish, Who is aiming to ruin the relationship. She goes out of her way in many different circumstances to get between the boy and the girl ranging from a photo booth to a game of crazy golf. The girl dressed all in black comes across as flirtatious and very confident with the way she looks and dresses. The girl in the black tries her hardest to get the guy. In the end the girl gets the guy and the geeky girl is left on her own. <br />The main location that caught my eye is when Avril and her band are playing. There is a backdrop which shows skull and crossbones in a heart which is all coloured bright pink, white and black. The costumes for both of the main characters are very different for example one of the characters is all black and quite gothic whereas the other girl is wearing quite old fashioned clothing with a tartan skirt, blouse and cardigan. On the other hand the love interest, the boy, is wearing all black which shows a definite link with him and the female character who also is wearing all black. Just from watching the music video you get the idea of the girl who is dressed in black could possibly be the girl’s alter ego. At the end of the music video you see the geeky girl left on her own upset. This could represent the end of her alter ego and that she has left the past behind her and stuck to the one person and that is the person she feels comfortable with. <br />
