Distribution of Media
Ross Perretta-Task 3 Evaluation
What type of media institution might distribute you
Media Product and why?
• When answering this question there are many institutional decisions that
need to be considered. Analyzing why Shifty was chosen by Metrodome.
• Metrodome have prided them selves in investing in lower budget 'indie
films' and have been successfully in many smaller productions. They were
looking for low budget British films and liked the scipt and how it
interpreted London 'streets',
• A production company's job is to handle scripting, casting, budgeting and
scheduling. They essentially take care of the technical side of production
and allow film directors enough time and resources to create the picture.
What does a production company do?
Why have you created your ident logo they way
you have?
• We chose the indent we did because it represents film by having an old
fashioned film tape wheel and it sounds a large book as the ident fades to a
bright screen. this gives it a very cinematic blockbuster feel but still remains
basic (not many 3d detailed visuals) so people will identify it as a smaller
production company .
• The distributor will decide where and when the film will be shown and also
deals with advertisement and film promotion.
• There are many steps in film distribution. Firstly they have to decide how
many copies of the film need to be made. The film is then shown to
potential buyers(stores) and cinemas to decide whether they want to stock
or screen the film. The film is then sent to cinema and after around a month
of screening the cinema will give the distributer an agreed amount of
money. The distributed then gets paid for stock of the film.
What does a distributer do?
What distributor have I chosen for
Somnum?
I would choose Metrodome as my distributer. They were responsible for the
distribution of Shifty which had a very good response for a low budget British
production. They have worked with many low budget films and are good at
getting critic screenings which help the promotion of the film. Shifty made
over £244,000 in the box office which is well over the costs of the production.
Our film would likely be funded by Metrodome as they a interested in low
budget films and there is little risk as not a lot of money is involved and they
would be in charge of distribution.
