2. What the first shot suggests to the
audience through the micro elements…
The music video begins with a close up of
the first female character, dressed slightly
old fashioned, for example wears flowery
jewellery, a silvery dress and red lipstick.
The high key lighting within the shot
suggests to the audience that the song is
positive and ‘fun’ which appeals to the
audience more.
Also, we can tell from the first shot that the
setting is a prom-like setting and the first
female character is in a photo booth.
Therefore, the party scene is mainly
symbolised through mise en scene in the
video ‘classic’. So, the lyrics match the title
of the song due to the lack of modernised
clothing.
3. Cinematography
After the first close up of the female
character, the two main singers are
introduced to the audience and
demonstrated as the main focus due
to their on screen time.
The introduction of these two
characters start with a close up of
their hand shake, switching to a mid
shot of them together and back to a
close up of the hand shake again.
This shows their friendship within the
video, and the audience can
empathise with due to being a big
part in their own lives. This also
further encourages the ‘fun’ element
to the part scene.
4. Mise en scene
The ‘fun’ party scene is
continuous through mise en
scene, for example the
positioning of the characters are
intimate, conversational and
collective.
Also, members of the prom-like
event continue to play cards
around a table, drink cocktails
and socialise.
The costume of the characters
vary throughout, certain clothes
focusing on different eras or
years, for example a female
character focus’ on the ‘hippie’
style with daisy chains and
flowers. This matches the lyrics
and title ‘classic’.
5. Editing
Throughout the music video the takes are short and
snappy, emphasising the fast, perhaps chaotic,
atmosphere of the night. This allows the audience to
be engaged within the scenes which are involved.
Some shots were edited in slow motion to slow the
scene down slightly in order for the audience to take
it all in. for example, when the cards are distributed
between members at the table, taking a drink and
when the female characters moves away from the
others.
The pace of the cuts are quicker to highlight the
speed of the dancing and also the busy element of
the prom-like setting.
There is continuous cross cutting throughout the
music video between the duet singers, the prom-like
room, and the photo booth.
