This presentation discusses the six main nutrients needed for human and plant growth: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water. It provides details on the composition, function, and sources of each nutrient. Carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids provide energy and are used for growth and repair of cells and tissues. Vitamins and minerals control life processes and are obtained through foods. Water is essential and makes up 70% of the human body. An adequate intake of all six nutrients from foods is needed for smooth functioning of life activities.

4. “Element or compound essential for animal and
plant growth” .We consider food as a substances
that contain nutrients that are essential for
smooth functioning of life activities. Mainly 6
components should be .Presente in our diet.
Carbohydrate
Protein
Lipid
Vitamines
Minerals
Water
NUTRIENTS
5. CARBOHYDRATE
Carbohydrates are made up of carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen combined in a certain ratio .
Carbohydrate provide energy for life activities.
Carbohydrate can be classified in to monosaccharides,
disaccharides and polysaccharides
• Monosaccharides are the simple unit formed from
polysaccharides
Eg ;glucose,fructose,galactose
• Two monosaccharides combines to form a Disaccharides.
Eg;Lactose in milk, sucroce in sugar cane.
• Polysaccharides are substance that contain more than 10
glucose molecules.
Eg; starch,cellulose and glycogen
7. PROTEINS
They are formed of simpler molecules called
amino acid.
They consist of the elements carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen and nitrogen
Function: construction of new cell and tissues

8. They are made up of fatty acid and glycerol.
They consist of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Function: Supply of energy. Fats contain double the
amount of energy contain in carbohydrates.
Excess fat is stored under the skin and around the
internal organ . So it can be considered as stored
food.
The fat under the skin acts as an insulator preventing
the escape of heat from the body.

9. Vitamins are organic substance.
Plant can produce most of the vitamins.
The human body can produce only a few vitamins. The other
have to be obtained from food.
Function :They are not supplier of energy .They control life
activities.
They are classified intoWater-soluble and Fat-soluble.
Vitamins A,D,E and K are fat soluble .
Vitamins B-complex and C are water-soluble.
Excessiveness of vitamins is not good.
VITAMINS
11. Minerals control and co-ordinate life activities.
Calcium , Phosphorus, Sodium and Potassium are needed in
comparatively large amounts.
Copper, Zinc , Iron , Magnesium etc are needed
comparatively small amounts.
Deficiency or excessiveness of minerals in food is harmful.

12. It is an inorganic substance.
About 70% of the body is water.
Life is not possible with out water.
It is not broken down into simpler substance in the body.
The body gets water from foods ,drinks ,and from metabolic
activities.
The body loses water in the form of urines ,sweat and faeces.
