Presented By: Buddy Kuhn, Fire Chief
Item # 10
City Council Meeting
December 11, 2017
Purchase a replacement of the
firefighting SCBA Air Compressor
2. Summary
• Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
compressor jointly purchased by tri-cities in
1996
• Used to re-fill compressed air into firefighting
SCBA bottles
• Current unit is broken and not cost effective
to repair
3. Background
• Current and new system require quarterly air
sampling and other maintenance
• All maintenance costs over the years have been
split equally among the tri-cities
• Each community has the need to re-fill bottles but
not cost effective for each community to maintain
their own systems
• Olmos Park (OP) and Terrell Hills (TH) have
continued interest in maintaining a shared system
4. Fiscal Impact
• Total cost through Municipal Emergency Services
(MES) is $21,889.01
• Additional fee of $3,260.00 required for electrical
and ventilation upgrades to fire station compressor
room - done outside of MES contract
• New compressor is larger and generates more heat
5. Fiscal Impact
• AH would pay $3,260 fee for building upgrades at
100%
• Alamo Heights’ total Cost is $10,556.33 from Capital
Replacement Fund
• TH and OP have committed to a 1/3 cost share or
$7,296.33
• Would require a budget amendment – funds from un-
reserved contingency fund – was not budgeted for
• Approx. 60 to 75 day delivery time
