Effect of Vine Harvesting on Root and Vine Yield of
Different Sweetpotato Varieties in Uganda
Elizabeth Akiror (UMU)
Gerald Kyalo (CIP)
Presentation outline
 Introduction
 Objectives
 Materials and Methods
 Results
 Conclusions
Introduction
 Sweetpotato is an important food crop in Uganda (Bagamba and
Ilukor, 2016)
 About 44% of smallholder farmers grow sweetpotato (Peters,
2008)
 Sweetpotato is a food security crop especially in areas with long
dry seasons
 SP vines and non marketable roots are commonly fed to
livestock and can be also used to make silage to feed livestock
(particularly the growing pig population) at times of feed scarcity
Introduction Contd….
 Dual-purpose SP varieties
maximize the production of vines
while maintaining good
productivity of roots.
 There is need to identify the best
dual-purpose SP varieties
(released/landraces) in Uganda
to respond to the growing
demand for feed without
compromising food availability
 Timing of vine harvesting is
critical to achieve optimum root
and fodder yield (Niyireba et al.,
2013, Abdissa et al., 2012).
Objectives
 Identify suitable dual-purpose sweetpotato varieties in
Uganda
 Assess the effects of vine harvesting on the root yield
of the four selected varieties
 Determine appropriate vine cutting regimes
Materials and Methods
 Study site: Uganda Martyrs
University (UMU) farm,
Masaka (central Uganda) and
Kamuli (eastern Uganda).
 Experimental design: Split plot
design with varieties as main
plots and cutting regimes as
sub plots
 Sweetpotato varieties:
NASPOT 11, 12 O, 13 O and
local variety
Materials and Methods
 Plot sizes: 10m x 10m, Net plot sizes for detopping/ no
detopping were 4mX5m (20m2)
 Data collection: on fresh weigh of vines at 85 and 150 days
after planting, fresh root weight at 150 DAP, SPVD and
Alternaria blight and weevil infestation (scale of 1-9, 1- no
infection/infestation, 9-severe)
 Root/vine ratio was computed using root and vine dry matter
 Data analysis: using Genstat 12th edition

Results
 Generally SP varieties yielded better in 2016A than 2015B
in Nkozi
 NASPOT 12 O yielded better than the other varieties in
2016A while the local variety performed better in 2015B in
Nkozi
 NASPOT 11 that was detopped performed better than the
non detopped in Nkozi by 11.5% in 2015A
 The highest root/vine ration was recorded in NASPOT 11,
followed by local variety (but only when not detopped)
 NASPOT 11 also showed the highest root yield in Masaka
and Kamuli and recorded the highest root/vine ratio (2.9)
Varieties can be categorized as:
Variety Average R/Vine
Ratio
Comment
Local 0.8 Forage
NASPOT 11 1.7 High dual purpose
NASPOT 12 1.2 Low dual purpose
NASPOT 13 1.1 Low dual purpose
Results
R/V= 0 - 1 = forage, 1-1.5 = low dual purpose, 1.5 - 2.0 = high
dual purpose, 2-3 =low root production, > 3 = high root
production (Nguyen and Leon Velarde, 2009)
Conclusion
 NASPOT 11 performed best in terms of root yield in all
locations
 NASPOT 11 is a suitable dual purpose sweet potato variety
 Harvesting vines from the local variety reduced yield by over
60%
 Farmers intending to harvest vines for silage should be
recommended to plant NASPOT 11, or NASPOT 12 and 13

Materials and Methods  Plot sizes: 10m x 10m, Net plot sizes for detopping/ no detopping were 4mX5m (20m2)  Data collection: on fresh weigh of vines at 85 and 150 days after planting, fresh root weight at 150 DAP, SPVD and Alternaria blight and weevil infestation (scale of 1-9, 1- no infection/infestation, 9-severe)  Root/vine ratio was computed using root and vine dry matter  Data analysis: using Genstat 12th edition

  • 10. Results  Generally SP varieties yielded better in 2016A than 2015B in Nkozi  NASPOT 12 O yielded better than the other varieties in 2016A while the local variety performed better in 2015B in Nkozi  NASPOT 11 that was detopped performed better than the non detopped in Nkozi by 11.5% in 2015A  The highest root/vine ration was recorded in NASPOT 11, followed by local variety (but only when not detopped)  NASPOT 11 also showed the highest root yield in Masaka and Kamuli and recorded the highest root/vine ratio (2.9)
  • 11. Varieties can be categorized as: Variety Average R/Vine Ratio Comment Local 0.8 Forage NASPOT 11 1.7 High dual purpose NASPOT 12 1.2 Low dual purpose NASPOT 13 1.1 Low dual purpose Results R/V= 0 - 1 = forage, 1-1.5 = low dual purpose, 1.5 - 2.0 = high dual purpose, 2-3 =low root production, > 3 = high root production (Nguyen and Leon Velarde, 2009)
  • 12. Conclusion  NASPOT 11 performed best in terms of root yield in all locations  NASPOT 11 is a suitable dual purpose sweet potato variety  Harvesting vines from the local variety reduced yield by over 60%  Farmers intending to harvest vines for silage should be recommended to plant NASPOT 11, or NASPOT 12 and 13
